Post Alexandre Desplat confirmed to compose Deathly Hallows: Part I score

Film Score Daily is reporting that French composer Alexandre Desplat, who has conducted the scores for such features as The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Golden Compass, The Queen, Julie & Julia, and The Twilight Saga: New Moon, is to create the music for the first installment of the final Harry Potter films, Deathly Hallows: Part I.

Quote:
He has become the director-of-choice for many of the world's most acclaimed directors, including Fincher, Stephen Frears, Terence Malick and Roman Polanski, and has signed for one his most challenging and highest-profile assignments yet, the penultimate entry in the Harry Potter saga.
It is unknown whether Desplat will compose music for Deathly Hallows: Part II, but we will update with further information when it is released.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be released on November 19, 2010 and July 15, 2011.

Thanks very much to whimsicalflautist for the tip!

UPDATE: Film Score Daily has let us know that they were given the information about Desplat by the composer's agents, thus confirming this. However, they have no word on the second movie.

John Williams was great, but he wasn't *that* great, in my opinion.

I'm very curious to hear Alexandre Despat's compositions for Deathly Hallows, since he has won two Oscars and composed the incredible score for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, in addition to The Queen. New Moon's score was quite atmospheric as well, including Volturi Waltz, but don't associate a man with an extensive career with only one movie, because even John Williams has been hit-and-miss sometimes.

mmmmm I don't know if this should be good or bad news; until we hear his interpretation of Harry Potter we really can't judge.

He did Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which was amazing! So I am pretty sure that it will be a very good score. They know what they are doing and they know that this score needs to be the best since it is the last film, they look for something different every film. They wouldn't have hired him if they weren't sure he would do an amazing job. I am sure he won't disappoint us.

Alexandre Desplat might did The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, New Moon, The Golden Compass and The Queen, but JOHN WILLIAMS did Harry Potter 1, 2, 3, Star Wars, Superman, Indiana Jones, Memoirs of a Geisha, Schindler's List, E.T., Jaws, Jurassic Park, Home Alone and Hook (and his underrated Catch Me If You Can)!!!

Williams better be back for Deathly Hallows: Part II

Lovely! I heard The Meadow on the New Moon soundtrack and it was composed gorgeously. I can't wait to hear what he'll do for DH Part I.

I DO NOT LIKE THIS!! Desplat is a great composer. I love what he did with the Curious Case of Benjamin Button soundtrack, BUT John Williams needs to come back or they at least need to get someone who can handle large scale films with lots of action like Hans Zimmer or Michael Gacchino! I can deal with this as long as John Williams comes back for part two!!! PLEASE COME BACK JOHN WILLIAMS!!!! PLEASE!!!

Alexandre Desplat has not won an Oscar. He was nominated twice, but he DID NOT win. John Williams has won 5 OSCARS!

I like this. I dont think John williams style would have fit with Part 1 anyone seeing as how its a dark, on the run type road film.
Desplat makes very good music and what ive heard i think hell beable to do great things for DH part 1.
People are acting like this is the film makers fault. Im thinking Williams was the one who turned them down.
Hopefully he will do Part 2 cause his style will fit alot better with the epic moments in that part.

NY Yankees Love!

First thing first, remember guys a soundtrack and score are two different things.

Sure, it would have been nice to have John Williams back. He's an amazing composer without question. But maybe John didn't want to come back. Honestly, in my opinion, when it comes to composing for film, I think it's more in the hands of the composer. So, if Williams is invited back and wants to work on the final installment, now that would be great.

Now, let's not get all bummed out, freaked out, nor take any away from Alexandre Desplat. He has done amazing work. Some of my favorites of his composing work is the score for "The Queen" and "New Moon", respectively. I look forward to what Mr. Desplat has to offer and hopefully he brings it to the table. I'm sure he will not fail us; he will be composing for a Harry Potter film. I think he or has to realize that and deliver.

Too many people are saying "New Moon sucked, therefore his score sucked and he shouldn't do DH". That is just dumb.

New Moon most certainly sucked, but his score did not, and he's a very talented composer. I expect great things from his work on DH.

This honestly meant a lot to me for John Williams to come back and finish it off. Did WB confirm it, since it says only the Film Score Daily is reporting it?

I mean I know the Curious Case of Benjamin Button was an amazing film but to hear Twilight in the mix is making me a bit anxious (honestly my heart is pounding). I know that Twilight's soundtrack was completely different from the terrible film and it stood on its own but still...why must they mix Twilight and HP together in any way...they are 2 different things and filmmaker/crew of the different films shouldn't merge for good reason!

I know I will listen to his score because it will be good but it was John Williams I wanted. I hope hope hope that John Williams comes back for Part II.
His agent confirmed it. That's good enough. As for sharing talent, tell that to RPattz and Jamie Campbell Bower.

Robert Pattinson was never big when he started HP and moved onto Twilight. I had no problem with him being Twilight's lead because he really was done with Potter since he was dead. Jamie has a small role which was once again fine...anyways, neither of them were "talented," (RPattz) especially after seeing Twilight for me to care lol...not a great loss.

The composer is a big deal to me because John Williams is a brilliant in my opinion and I don't think I can explain it but it just really feels personal when he does it...

I sound sooo crazy right how haha but there's just magic when Williams does it.
