So, I bake. It was one of the largest factors when fell off the grid with SnitchSeeker. If you follow me on Facebook or Tumblr, you'll already know this.
Buuut, seeing as though I'm coming back, I decided that I'd create a thread here, to share the Potter/Hogwarts/Wizardy cakes I have made (and will make)... Because, y'know, another space online to keep updated with my work is just what I need. It's a huge shame that I don't get to make more HP themed cakes, in all honesty.
----
Anyway. Onto the cake. The last HP themed cake I made was way back in February, and it was awesome.
My mum's neighbour literally said to me "Jess, I really want a Harry Potter themed cake for my birthday", and she gave me total creative freedom over it. This is what I came up with. My mum's neighbour absolutely adored it, and as did everyone else at the party. (Seriously, I think it's my most-photographed cake to date!)
I'd debated trying to make the mascots, too, but I don't have a delicate enough hand to be able to cut them out cleanly. Maybe practising that will be my next project.
Because I don't want this post to be too image-heavy, more photos of different angles of the cake are under the cut:
SPOILER!!: More photos!
I honestly don't remember how I came to the decision, but 'anti-gravity'/flying kind of became the theme of the scene on the cake. It worked well, though, so I'm not complaining. Originally the broom was going to be stood against the cake, but when I DID realise that the different ideas seamlessly worked together, the figure of my friend looked odd just perched on... nothing.
The inside of the cake was pretty neat, too. I didn't manage to get a photo of it, though. It was a chessboard cake, and was chocolate fudge and white chocolate in flavour. (For visual reference, though, this is what a chess/checker board cake looks like.)
I can't tell you how long this took to make from beginning to end. I don't remember. It was definitely upwards of 30 hours, though.
---
So... yes. Cake. That's a thing. I'd love to know what you guys think of this cake overall.
I only have a couple more HP themed cakes/fondant works that I've already made - which I'll share soon -, so any ideas as to what I could make in the future would be gladly noted. :3

It's been so very long since I made this thread, that I kind of forgot about it while waiting for it to be approved. Heh.
Well, I've not made anything Potter-related since May, but I dooo have this old piece to share:
I made this fondant figure for Beth (imaginarynumb3rs) last Christmas. Those of you who've RPed with Beth might recognise the girl to be Wesley Reagan. ^___^
The drawing on the left was the sketch I made while in work, and I think it looks a bit more like how I imagine Wesley than the fondant figure does.
I was terrified that she wouldn't make it in one piece if I just created her as I normally make a fondant figure, so I created her in two pieces, and attached them to a floor and a wall, which could be packaged separately and assembled by Beth when she got her.
The next time I have/want to make a fondant figure for an SSer (I do believe I owe Droo one), though, I think I'll be a bit braver and make the figure whole, and just hope for the best. Heh.
So yes. Fondant Wesley, being all festive and the like. I really liked how she came out, and I think I'm going to make some more SS character figures in September/October, when I have more free time to do so. :3
Ahhhhh, Jess, these are so beautiful!!! I love that first cake so much; every time I look at it I notice something different. Like today I saw how you had written Cleansweep on the broom handle! And the little Cornish pixie!!
And of course I love the Wesley figurine!! She's so perfect! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! And she's holding up really well; I thought that I might have to move her down to the basement during the summer because of the humidity, but the weather hasn't affected the fondant at all.
I look forward to seeing what other wonderful things you make!!! And I definitely think you should make more SS figures!!!

Beth beth beth! Thank you so much! I always grin so much when I see any comments on my cakes from you. <3
I'm glad to hear she's doing okay! I have the BatBear and Robin!Piglet I made for Ian's birthday last year still sat in my room, and they're still going strong, too. I think once they've set, the humidity isn't too big a problem - only direct water would ruin them.
Well then, that's it settled! I'm definitely going to be making a project out of SS figures!

I'll hopefully have a HP (specifically: Ravenclaw) themed cake made for the 1st September, because one of my friends wants a birthday cake. Weeee!

Okay, so my plans to make my friend a Ravenclaw themed cake didn't happen because of time/changes in plans/etc...
HOWEVER.
I've decided I REALLY want to plan and make four wedding cakes (using cake dummies): One for each of the four houses. So far, I only really have ideas for the Hufflepuff one, but I'm really excited to make this a thing!
And omg I can't WAIT to see there wedding cakes! AKSJFNAKJFNAJKSF you should totes combine the houses as if they were getting married like... you know like... I CAN'T EXPRESS IN WORDS HAHA! But you know, Slytherdor, Ravenpuff and all that. How. Cool.
But a wedding cake for each house sounds brilliant too like

Jess, I just wanted to come in here and say that I absolutely LOVE your baking, it is absolutely FANTASTIC. I wish I had even 1/4 of the talent you do!
I am really eager to see these wedding cakes, and whatever else you come up with to post here!

Hehehehe. Thank you! <333
OH. NO. NO NO NO. Don't let me think about inter-house cakes - there's like a hundred combinations! I still haven't figured what I want to do for the same-house wedding cakes, yet! (I have Hufflepuff's sorted and the ideas for Gryffindor and Slytherin's, but nothing for Ravenclaw.)
I might just sketch them all and upload them, then make them if I ever have the chance to.

Hehe, thaaaaaaaanks.
Okay so this isn't technically cake but it's a crafty thing and it's HP themed so I want to share it anyway and I've got Hogwarts Crest cookies coming up in a few weeks anyway so it's okay, right?
Hermione Granger Cosplay Papercraft (with a cameo from one Jimbo Farley)
I made papercrafts for some of my friends for Christmas, and this one was for Mel (Rawr!) who really loves Hermione. I nearly made Jimbo (her RP character; Iris' friend) instead, but decided going for a pin-up theme (across all four papercrafts) was more fun. Though now I think of it, putting Jimbo Farley in pin-up poses would be wonderful.
I'm hiding the photo under a cut because it's a pretty big file:
SPOILER!!: BEHOLD!
It was my first time ever making things out of paper like this and it was a lot of fun. :3
But yeah, cake stuff resumes in the next post, hopefully week after next.

Hi! I have a LOT of cake to share here today, so I'm going to honour the 5th anniversary of Iris' existence (!!!!) by sharing my cousin's totally awesome birthday cupcakes with you guys.
Honeydukes cupcake display
Candy Floss/Cotton Candy cupcakes: I literally bought a candy floss maker to have these, haha. I melted LOTS of candy floss in soy milk and used the candyflossy milk in place of the vanilla flavouring in the recipe, and again with the frosting. I coloured my own sugar for the sprinkles on top.
Lemon Sherbet cupcakes: Lemon cupcakes soaked with homemade lemon syrup; lemon buttercream (use the syrup to flavour the frosting! Seriously!); topped with crushed sherbet lemons from the HP Studio Tour.
Pumpkin Pasty cupcakes: I couldn't find canned pumpkin anywhere, so I had to settle for the spices you use in pumpkin-flavoured pastries instead. I'm going to find out if other squashes I have access to will give the texture these were missing.
BUTTERBEER cupcakes: Personal favourite. I made vegan caramel - which was amazing - and used that, brown sugar, cinnamon, and ginger to flavour the cake. The buttercream was extra-whipped to be lighter, and were covered in the caramel.
Chocolate Frog cupcakes: Good old chocolate cupcakes with vanilla buttercream. I made 'chocolate' frogs and cards out of fondant, and painted details on the cards with food dye.
Little birthday cake: The top cake was just a vanilla cake, but tasted amazing. I made little bunting flags in the house colours, and the candled burnt the colour of the wax. (but I didn't get a photo of that because I'd gone to Alice's before they sang Happy Birthday )
SPOILER!!: BEHOLD. CAKE.
And because they're JUST SO COOL, here are individual photos of all the chocolate frog cards. Dumbledore, personally, is my favourite one out of the bunch (in terms of how well they came out):
SPOILER!!: behold! more cake!
I have a few more photos to upload and put here, and I'll edit them in at some point.
The close ups of the mascots you can just about see in the first photo are going to be posted separately in a moment.
Yeah thats what crazy is, when its broken you say theres nothing to fix++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++And you pray that everything will be okay, while you're making all the same mistakes

These cakes are amazing Jess! Those flavours are making me drool. I love your attention to detail...and the house mascots are so incredibly cute.
As for pumpkin puree in the UK, that only place I can find it with any regularity is in larger Waitrose stores. It's only £2 or so per tin, so I always stock up when I'm nearby (I've a pumpkin pie obsessed other half!). I've also seen Tesco do it online near to Thanksgiving, and Amazon do it if you don't mind buying in bulk.

O.O
You are fabulous.

edit: i just realized it might be food coloring but what do you mix it with? water? somet other solvent? the colors look so rich
Awww, THANK YOU SO MUCH. <3
I use gel/paste food colourings, because they are super concentrated. I don't mix them with water because that's silly. If I need to paint with them, I use cheap vodka (am I allowed to mention this? Is this against the rules? D: ) to make the food paint, because it evaporates pretty quickly and doesn't make a liquidy, sugary mess of the fondant like water does.

I tried in Waitrose! The only one I had access to was out of stock when I went. I think I might go to a bigger Waitrose one day, and just stock up on the stuff so I always have some because pumpkin cupcakes are SO GOOD.

Fondant Hogwarts Mascots
I got distracted by MCBUSTED, but here are clearer photos of the promised mascots:
The badger's my favourite. I really loved how he came out. The Lion could have done with a tidier mouth/mane, but I'm just being pedantic.
I had already seen them all but THEY'RE SO GOOD I CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF THEM!
And all of them Harry Potter ones makes me want a Harry Potter themed party/meal/get together/WHATEVER REEEEALLY BAAAAAAAAAAAD!!!!!!!!!!

I simply love themed cakes and yours are one of the best that I've ever seen. My favourite is the Hogwarts house mascot cake toppers. They are different to the usual mascot design which I love. I love the raven reading the book because it really represents the house.
