Default History of Magic Lesson 3

Walking through the first floor corridor and up to the classroom for the final History of Magic class of the term, you are of course greeted by the sign outside the door. You are likely not surprised by this sight as it is now pretty much a fixture of this end of the first floor and as always, Professor Glendower leaves the message up to the individual to interpret.

Quote:
Make an Entrance
Respectfully
Once inside the classroom, you might notice the very faint yet upbeat tempo music playing in the background. Professor Glendower is at her podium, humming along and creating origami animals out of squares of paper. Come in and take a seat... class will begin soon!

The Idea Man Kori-Kins

Angel looked at the Professor and raised her hand. "The Maunders Map... that was created by the Maunders Gang.." She didn't have to name them right. "it was created so that the students knew where everyone was in the school and where they could go without getting caught... Do you know where it is now? I want to eh use it if it's okay Professor?"

It was hard to believe that there had been a time where flying brooms hadn't been around. Seriously. He expected that people must've taken flying carpets or something else but it was like trying to imagine a world without cars: freaking impossible. And worse was that they probably had to walk or take a carriage or whatever. Those poor ancestors, man.

Shaking his head, Grayson picked up his quill and made a few notes on what the others had said. Mainly, he had simply copied out the list on the board and added in his own notes here and there.

And her question? Placing his quill down, the fifth year thought for a moment or two before putting his hand up. "Omnioculars are a dead useful invention," he started, "I dunno who invented them but props to the person that did. See, I think they were mainly invented for Quidditch. When you're sitting up in those stands, it can be kinda hard to see what's going on on the pitch, especially when everyone's moving so quickly. People don't wanna buy freaking pricey tickets only to not be able to see what's going on. It ruins the game. So, some genius came up with this to help people, which kinda boosted sales for the places that hold these events because, once word got out that they can get these bad boys, people would have flocked to get their tickets and try them out."

Pause. "Course, you don't have to use them only for Quidditch."

Sophie was VERY relieved that Glendower seemed to appreciate her answer so much, and she couldn't wipe the stupid grin off her face even as the topic changed to someone else and others were providing their answers. Hehehehe. She LOVED that kind of approval from professors, but she was aware that she probably looked a little silly to be so happy over it, so she casually covered her mouth with her hand while she took notes on various other points people were saying that appeared on the blackboard.

But she was still pretty smug with herself.

As they moved along to the next question, Soph hummed thoughtfully to herself, only pondering briefly before raising a hand to mention one of the first inventors that came to mind. "Gaspard Shingleton invented the Self-Stirring Cauldron, professor. It wasn't necessarily something that we greatly needed in our lives in the wizarding world, but it's more of a... thing of convenience. If a cauldron is stirring itself, a potionmaker can be multi-tasking and preparing other ingredients as needed."

She would never invest in one, though, because she didn't trust a cauldron to do it correctly, with or without her guidance.

When Professor Glendower asked the class to name some Wizarding inventions and their inventors, she was ready with her answer. Ignatia Wildsmith was the person on her Chocolate Frog card in the previous class so she knew all about her. Unfortunately so did her classmates and they were quicker to respond.

Now Jasmine had to go to Plan B, only she didn't have another answer on the tip of her tongue. While she took a moment to think, it seemed as though the other students gave just about every other inventor known to man. She was stuck, but hoping that she could come up with another answer before they moved on to something else.

Zhenya had been jotting all the suggestions her classmates had said on her parchment, just in case she would need to refer to them again. She found the lesson very interesting, and was interested to learn who/why/how/when things had been invented. She knew of lots of inventions, obviously all she had to do was look around and start naming things, but she knew very few inventors. VERY few. She knew of one object, had hears about it and was rather fascinated by it, so she raised her hand waiting to be called upon.
"Professor, I don't know who invented it buuuut there's an object out there called a two-way mirror and it's pretty interesting how it lets two people communicate with each other by using a piece of mirror each." She heard that Harry Potter's father and godfather used to use them, but she didn't know whether they had invented it or not.

Zeke copied down notes as they discussed things, and as they appeared on the board. Seemed legit, and he wondered what historical movement/event/discovery they'd be studying today.

Oohhhh ooohhhh ooohhhhh!!! HE KNEW THIS ONE... or oness... but yeah, YEAH.

Hand up, and fingers wiggling about because he KNEW things, Zeke waited for his turn to contribute.

"Quills professor! Self-inking ones! And quick quotes ones! Because they make writing so much easier by doing half or all of the work for you." And even though muggle pens didn't need inking, quick quotes quills were friggin AWESOME.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Samantha carefully took down the notes from the blackboard.

SPOILER!!: Sam's Notes

Why do People Invent Things?

Inspired by dreams or by using something that could be improved
Solution to an existing problem
Current products are outdated or need improved; Keep up with the times and evolving needs of people
Make lives easier/more convenient and improved, possibly save lives; betterment of humankind
Fame or money
FUN, creativity, curiosity
To challenge oneself; pride in accomplishment or being responsible for something great

She heard a multitude of answers when Professor Glendower asked about wizarding objects. Sam was really struggling to answer and was losing confidence. She decided to stay quiet.

Cinna copied down her notes from the board. She tried her best to keep up with the others answers so she wouldnt repeat any of the answers. As she finished taking her notes. She flipped through her textbooks to see if she could find something. It seemed like that's what everyone else was doing too.

Oh hang on. She had a good one she wasn't sure if someone had mentioned it or not. She didn't think no one had so she raised her hand. "The inventor by the name of Spindle invented the candy, Spindle's Lick'O'Rish Spiders. They move just like chocolate frogs do."

Nessa nodded towards Penelope as she was the first to offer an answer. Floo powder, but yes, you are right,” she smiled at the girl. ”That is probably another invention that many of us take for granted today, but there was a time that that didn’t exist..” Floo travel was so commonplace these days.

Brown eyes fell on Aubrey next as she raised her hand. Nodding at her to call on her, she smiled as she heard her answer. ”Oh that’s a good one,” she nodded in confirmation as the girl’s facts were thus far correct. ”I do wonder what was going on in old Edgar Stroulger’s life to make him feel the need to invent that,” she added with a chuckle.

Penelope had just offered the same thing but he was still correct and she could expand on it a bit. ”Yes, she did,” she smiled, ”About 800 years or so ago, so it is a very old invention, but has made travel very convenient. But since it’s been around so long, I think many of us take that for granted.” She could hardly imagine what life would be like without the ability to floo.

She said with a nod, still flipping through her book to see if it said who invented it.
Nessa thought over Eden’s answer for a moment once she had contributed to the discussion. “The pensieve is not so much an invention but more simply a place to sort through one’s thoughts.” You could really use any sort of vessel for that, but its specific measurements seemed to be most ideal. It was one of those in-between things that might seem like an invention but wasn’t really. She did, however, give Eden a bright smile for her efforts.

"I think they were invented to make moving around a building a lot easier! That way you only really need one stair case for everything, instead of having to move around a whole lot," yup.
Hmm.. Nessa thought over Zander’s answer. Moving staircases weren’t exactly the kind of thing that was on her mind when she was thinking of inventions, but she supposed that they were just that. “Rowena Ravenclaw, one of the Hogwarts founders, was credited for coming up with that here.” And, as it was the first recorded instance, it was likely that she invented the notion as well.

Nessa nodded happily as she listened too Maddie’s answer next. ”Yes, those fall under the category of fun, I think,” she said with a big smile. ”Kids tend to use those more than adults, it seems..” Likely because of ethical issues, but it was still an invention, even if it wasn’t one used as often as others.

Nessa nodded towards Lux next as she noticed her hand in the air. ”Sure, that’s a good example of an invention as well.. I’m sure Professor Flamsteed would know more about its uses..” She wasn’t much of a stargazer, at least not a scientific one. Professor Glendower nodded happily as Tobias provided his answer next. ”That’s a good example too. A very inventive creation to be able to move and control light that way,” she said, lost in thought a bit. She held quite a bit of respect for inventors and the way their minds worked, especially their creativity. ”And yes, the Deluminator is attributed to Albus Dumbledore.” Not that there had ever been a patent or proof, but there wasn’t documentation of any before that one.

Brown eyes landed on Kace next as she noticed his hand raised in the air and Nessa nodded towards him to call on him. ”Oh those Weasley twins invented quite a few things in their time,” she said, nodding happily. ”Very creative men, though many of their products were more of the fun variety rather than necessary..” As evident by the store still standing that bore their name. That one was completed with some advanced magic, but I can’t say they were the inventors of magical maps in general..” She eyed the girl a moment before shaking her head. ”No, I don’t know where it currently is.” And she wouldn’t be so willing to hand it over to Angel if she did.

But so many inventions weren’t needed. ”But it does make it more convenient for a potioneer.” And that was what many inventions did – make things more convenient. She thought she’d use it if she was into potions, but they really weren’t her thing as it were.

Another quiet one. She did hear Professor Glendower say that the class could use the book to answer? Perhaps she was being shy though and she turned her brown eyes towards the center of the room looking for another volunteer.

Hmm... Professor Glendower wasn't quite sure what was going on with her students today as she sort of expected more answers than she had been given. Especially when she told them that they could use their books. There had been so many things invented throughout magical history! In fact, she was a little disappointed that much of the class seemed to leave their hands unraised. But that did not affect her outward cheerful demeanor! Moving on...

"So here are just a few of the many, many inventions created by magical folk in the past." She pointed up at the board after she waved her wand at it to have some of the answers displayed there. "Some of them were made for convenience, some for entertainment, some for another reason.. In a hundred years, there are likely to be other things invented that people will wonder how they ever lived without it.. new things are invented all the time. In fact, I am working on an invention myself." Professor Glendower smiled widely, then tapped her sparkly heels with her wand. All at once she began tap dancing and turning about the room, ending with a big flourishy finish at the front.

"Of course, I am an accomplished dancer, but I've been working on creating shoes that in a sense teaches the wearer basic steps that progressively get more advanced." Her beamy smile showed just how proud she was of her work. "Patent pending of course. And before we move onto our activity for the day, I am going to fill you in on what your homework is going to be.. you are going to think of your own invention, if you could create anything. What kind of need do you see that can be filled? For example, I'd like to invent a pair of earmuffs, or something along that line, that allows one to listen to a fwooper's song without it affecting the listener's mind as they say it does." A filter of sorts.. because it was a shame, really. Their music was so beautiful.

"Anyway.. the boxes at the back of the room do not have props or costumes in them this time. They are filled with things that have been invented throughout history, some are things that have been mentioned today, some are not. Spend the rest of the class trying things out and meanwhile, think about the need that the invention or inventions you choose had filled and start to think about what you want to invent for your homework." She nodded towards them in a gesture to tell them they could get started.

OOC -
SPOILER!!: things in the boxes
  • Extendable Ears
  • Self-stirring Cauldron
  • Foe Glass
  • Pair of Two Way Mirrors
  • Quick Quotes Quills
  • Sneakoscope
  • Magical Camera
  • Spellotape
  • Headless Hat
  • Omnioculars

Choose one or more things from the box to try out and interact with. There are more than one of each, so you don't have to take turns.. unless you want to. Or you can try out Prof Glendower's shoes, lol. Five posts of trying out things by 11:59pm EST 11/29 when I will close the class.

I am also assigning homework now so that you will have time to do it before my deadline for getting points in.

Her example had been a good one according to the professor and that made her smile. She too wondered what could have been going on in order for him to want to make an object like the sneakoscope. Maybe he too was up to no good. Wait... wouldn't that mean that the sneakoscope would be going off for him? Okay, AJ was thinking way to into this.

When Glendower started telling them that they would be expected to make their own inventions, the wheels in her head started turning. What would she make if she could? That was something that was going to require more thought.

For now she was anxious to get over to the boxes and see what she could get her hands on. There were so many things in the magical world that she still didn't know anything about. AJ walked over and peeked into the box. Cool... there was an actual sneakoscope. The lion swiped it and started to walk around with it in her hands. Were there any untrustworthy people around here? Where was Ian when you needed him? AJ needed to know if this thing worked or not.

Snap. Pensieve wasn't an invention. Oh well. Eden took note of that in her notes, of course, and scribbled everything else down, as well. Lotsa' inventions and what-----WHAT WERE THOSE THINGS. :O Eden NEEDED those shoes--SHE HAD TO LEARN TO DANCE. Why??? Well Eden didn't NEED reason to want to learn to DANCE okay?! She clapped VERY loudly and enthusiastically when Professor Glendower was done and giggled a bit.

SO COOL. SO. FLIPPIN' COOL.

GAH.

But anyways--they had to go try some of the inventions out! This was exciting. Eden had actually interacted with some of them--despite living in a half-magic household--and YEAH. She quiiiickly rushed over to the box eagerly and tried to decide what she wanted. Hmm. First---she would check out this Quick Quotes Quill. QQQ. Because lazy and WOW what an invention THAT was, yeah?

She picked one up and skipped back to her seat to plaaaay with it because GAH. She stroked the ends of the feather part of the quill for a second before thinking of what to say...hmm..

The Idea Man Kori-Kins

Angel listened to the Professor that wasn't fair she really wanted to use the Map... but it seemed like the Professor didn't know where it was, so maybe she was being fair it was really hard to tell anyway she listened to what the Professor said about picking an item from the box.

Angel looked in the box and saw the Quick Quotes Quills, she decided she wanted to give that a try it would be awesome to see what it did... she looked over and saw that her sister was already in the box. "Hey sis... what do you think about all these different things?"

Angel picked up the Quick Quotes Quill and went over to a piece of parchment she wanted to try and figure it out on her own... this was going to be amazing, though what was this Quill going to do... the name was a bit confusing.

At the mention of shoes that taught basic dance steps, Adi turned his head and shot a look at AJ. He had been teasing her ever since their duel way earlier in the term to teach him to teach him some of her crazy dance moves. Did Glendower plan to make those shoes in cool guy styles? Hehe.

Aw man! No dressing up. Adi had gotten used to doing that in this class but let's face it. What would they dress up as? Floo Powder? Okay, maybe not but Extendable Ears would be cool. Adi shuffled off towards the box and proceeded to go through its contents.

Oooh! Omnioculars! He would try out a pair of these.

Lots of her fellow students were coming up with amazing inventions from the Wizarding World, and Lux wondered if she would ever succeed with the spell she wanted to create with Bay. It was going to be so fun to try out and she couldn't wait for them to have an opportunity to work on it. At least she would be able to talk about it in the homework!

After writing down all the inventions mentioned on the board, Lux got up from her desk and headed over to one of the boxes at the end of the room. She wouldn't be wearing a costume today, but playing around with inventions sounded like a lot of fun too. Maybe she could figure out another invention and keep hers with Bay a secret until the time was ready to announce it to the world; she rather liked that idea actually.

Rummaging through the box, she found what she believed to be called a Quick Quotes Quill. As far as she remembered it was the type of quill Rita Skeeter used when she was a journalist. Seemed pretty cool to her, and she wondered how exactly it worked. Taking the quill back to her desk, Lux was eager to try it out.

Zhenya was pleased, yet again, at a correct answer. She had never used, or see, a two-way mirror, but had heard all about them. And Professor Glendower had one!? That was COOL! Maybe she could visit her office one day and look at it. That would be interesting.

She was snapped back to reality when Professor Glendower tapped at her shoes and started… dancing!? Zhenya watched as she went around the classroom. She was impress, and even gave Professor Glendower a little clap and a big smile. Those shoes were AWESOME! Maybe she could get a pair if they were ever sold in shops.

She took notes on her parchment regarding homework. What could she invent? She had a few small ideas, so she jotted those down too. Yes, she wanted to make sure she didn't forget any ideas. And for now they were going to be playing around with other inventions. That was pretty cool. She had a look in the box after a few crowds of people had dispersed. What was in there? She picked our a sneakoscope and looked at it before putting it back. She didn't want to take any chances with that! She picked up a pair of extendable ears, looked them over, and decided to play around with those. They looked rather funny; just like real ears. It was slightly odd. Whose conversation could she listen to?

Kace heard the professor mention she was a dancer and he thought that was pretty cool. He wasn't quite surprised since she always seemed graceful and she had the build for a dancer. Anyways he was quite excited to be testing out inventions but he heard the professor mention some inventions and he copied some down incase it came up on future tests or what not. It may even come up in his OWLS. You can never be too prepared. He heard they could test them out and he grinned. Welll don't mind if I do.

Kace got up from his seat and went over to the trunk and decided on which invention to use. He heard about Omnioculars being used during the Quiddtich World Cup and he always wanted to try it out and in fact he wished he could have seen the game but he wasn't alive yet when the game happened with the Death Eaters invading the camp ground. Once he got a hand of his invention, he went back to his seat eager to see what he can do with it.

If Toby had been zoning out at all, then the sudden random dancing quickly captured his attention again. He blinked and watched Glendower prance around the room, wondering if he'd missed some sort of important information as to what brought the dancing on. But then she stopped and explained and all was clear again. But hey, that was a super neat idea!

He quickly noted down all that about the homework, already wondering what kind of thing he might think up. It would be difficult, as Toby wasn't really all that creative. But what he lacked in creativity he made up for in working hard, so there was no doubt he'd put his full effort into it.

At the mention of the boxes at the back of the room, Toby automatically looked around at them and then back at the professor. That seemed like a pretty fun activity to him, yeah! He sat and waited until she indicated that they could start, before launching up over his seat and all but bounding back towards the boxes. If he didn't think it would be terribly impolite, he probably would have thrown himself over the other students' desks to get there, as he was still so bouncy and enthusiastic about life in general.

Toby reached one of the boxes and grabbed the first couple of things he saw: a pair of Omnioculars, and a roll of Spellotape. That seemed enough to be getting on with for now.

Getting out of the way of the boxes, Toby moved back towards his desk, resisting the urge to look through the Omnioculars to guide his way back. No, he'd get back, try the tape first, and then mess around with the Omnioculars. It was exciting, though; he'd always wanted to try about a pair of these.

Napoleon of Crime - Gryffinclaw - ❄ Lunar Library Lurker ❄ - Owl Emissary - Pirate Auror

Ben had gotten the gist of the topic of the lesson, the inventions made in the wizarding world that were made throughout history. So the subject of their impending homework wasn't too much of a surprise. It was a cool thought...trying to think of something they might want to develop on their own. Talk about a creative project. But alas, not what they would be working on that just yet. That's why it was called homework after all.

For now they would be exploring those inventions that were already in existence. His eyes trailed to the boxes in the back of the classroom as Professor Glendower mentioned them before listening and waiting until she had finished talking and some of his fellow classmates had already started to move before making his own. Coming to the boxes, Benny's gaze fell on the assortment of creations that made up the gathered collection.

Magical cameras, which they had all been shown in one class or another was the first he identified. He absently picked it up before moving on. The fourth year then picked up a quill that at first looked ordinary to him. Until he set it to motion and it started scribbling on some spare parchment he had, picking up conversation around itself. A quick quotes quill. "Cool..." he mused, the simple word copied on the paper among the rest.

So they were going to get to play with the inventions now? AWESOME!

As Zander walked up to the box, he took note of everything inside. The first things that caught his eye were definitely the two way mirrors, however, he wasn't really sure how they worked exactly... So instead grabbed the extendable ears because those looked more self explanatory. They had ears on both ends so it had to be something straight forward, right?

Grabbing the set, he made his way back to his desk. Couldn't wait to figure out how these things worked....

Uh, how exactly did they work?

Uhum. Right. He'd seen them before... Just never had to work them before exactly.

While thinking over what she wanted to say, Lux abent-mindedly played with the quill, running the feather end over her desk and then across the back of her hand. It tickled, and that made her laugh though she tried her best not to be loud about it in case she got into trouble. Professor Glendower was so nice, she doubted that would ever happen but it was still better to be careful.

It was probably not a good idea not to say anything personal around the quill because its spin on events might annoy her, so Lux figured that it would be better to talk about another person, or in this case a character. "Ariel is a beautiful mermaid Princess who falls in love with a human Prince and marries him." Curiously she watched as the Quick Quotes Quill began writing in her notebook as if an invisible person was holding it.

Ariel is a spoiled rich teenager who ran off with an older man, devastating her father and creating a scandal. "Hey, that wasn't very nice!" Grabbing the quill, Lux returned it to the box before it could write other mean things about her favourite Disney Princess.

What invention should she check out next...?

Jasmine was busy taking notes on the various inventions when Professor Glendower surprised the class with a tap dancing show. Her shoes were amazing and Jasmine was quite jealous. She imagined what she could do with those shoes.

Then the Professor announced their activity. This was going to be fun. They got to try out some of the of the Wizarding inventions and Jasmine knew exactly which ones she'd go for. She had a special one in mind to try, but she would save that one for last. Walking over to the not-prop box, she searched for her first invention.

Finding the Extendable Ears, Jasmine put the flesh colored string into her ear and walked away from the box. She left the other end of the device near the boxes as her classmates made their selections. How cool was that. She could hear everything that was being said near the inventions box......not that Jasmine would purposely eavesdrop on anyone otherwise, of course.

Toby was saving trying out those cool Omnioculars until last, yep. First, there was the Spellotape.

Now, Toby didn't actually had any real need for the tape; he'd just picked up the first thing that he'd seen. Hmmm... how should he use it? It seemed like a waste to try and tape something that didn't need it, and Tobias did not want to be wasteful.

As he looked around, looking for inspiration, Toby's gaze fell upon his notes for this class. He always wrote on sheaves of parchment, rather than those loooooong scrolls he sometimes saw people use. But... maybe he could tape up his parchments and try to turn it into a scroll, and that way when he looked back at his notes he could totally REMEMBER this activity, and then it would stick in his mind if it came up in a future exam. Good plan!

Grinning widely to himself, Toby got stuck in.

No? Anyone? Well, okay, he got started with his plan, lining up his parchments into one loooooooooong one and using the tape to stick it all together. He was pretty well-practiced in this particular art, being the kind of person who tended towards muggle-type solutions rather than magical ones. So tape? Easy.

While he worked, Toby thought about that question. About what need it was there to fill. It seemed pretty obvious to him, that it was for fixing things or sticking stuff together, though the more he thought about it the more Toby realised that most people would just resort to magic to do so. Which raised the question: was there a time when magic simply wouldn't be right and an invention like this became necessary? Or was it just a fun sort of thing? And what made it different from muggle tape? Though that last one was easy; it was probably charmed to be longer lasting or stronger or something.

Quite lost in thought, Toby went on creating his piece of megaparchment.

Jasmine decided that next she would try the Headless Hat. Oh those Weasley's......it seemed like she was trying all of their inventions today. Going back into the box, Jasmine replaced the extendable ears and pulled out one Headless hat. Before she put it on, she retrieved a mirror from her bag. This one Jasmine had to see, otherwise, what was the point?

Jasmine placed the hat on her head and paused a moment. She didn't feel any different. Then she lifted the mirror up to her face so she could take a look. It was both awesome and creepy to see oneself without a head. The inventors truly were gifted, demented, but gifted. Jasmine looked around the room to see if anyone noticed that she was now headless. Alas, everyone seemed focused on their own inventions. Jasmine resisted the urge to walk up to some unsuspecting classmate and scare them. Oh well, on to the next item.

He was THRILLED that there was no dressing up. Super thrilled, but he was still wondering what they were actually supposed to do, or learn. Was it simply just the fact that people did things and created things for various reasons which changed how things were done... and that the process wasn't going to stop, and people would continue creating and making things easier. Was that it?

He didn't need to know names or dates or impacts or anything???

That was.... kinda fine by him. Wooooot.

Slowly, he made his way to the boxes and dug a hand into the items, retrieving only one. A headless hat. Yeaaaahhh.... they were fairly cool, though it was far more fun with Ashley around, and she wasn't, so boo.

Zeke placed the had on his head, making himself appear to be headless.

Zhenya put one end of the extendable ears into her own ear and discretely left the other end near a classmate. She had a listen to everything they were saying, but feeling a bit guilty, like she was eavesdropping, she retrieved it and took it back to her desk to have a look at it. She was surprised at just how clearly she could hear them. It was as if they were sitting right next to her, having the conversation. They weren't though, they were a few rows back! She wrote down what she thought about the extendable ears. They were small enough to take with her wherever she wanted to go. They were very easy to use, and could be quite helpful. She wouldn't go eavesdropping on her parents over anything important, but say she was in the MLE and had to bust a criminal. It would be easy to bug their room or something with these and listen out for some evidence or something. If that was allowed…
