To one side of the common room, woven seagrass matting leads to a scene of luscious green. In the time since the mist took hold, the green-thumbed members of Hufflepuff worked hard weeding and re-planting, and the garden has regained its former glory. This is the Hufflepuff Dorm's Secret Garden. Enter for a space away from the craziness of Hogwarts.
As you enter, you’ll brush past a planter of chiming bluebells and lavender, the gentle sound and light scent emitted setting a relaxing vibe to the space. There are a couple of work benches and a brewing area nearby, for those who want to do some planting of their own, or put the fresh supply of ingredients to good use. A book of suggested potions recipes by year group hangs on the wall, with blank pages for students to add their own. Whether to plant, brew or simply relax, this space offers a change of pace from the common room, and it’s left to the Hufflepuffs to maintain and curate as they wish.
In the corner, you'll find a stack of Professor Holden's books leftover from his last visit. In the stack are a variety of genres but mostly mysteries lay inside.

Jude had always loved this part of the Common Room. It had been very beneficial and relaxing for him during his fifth year when he spent many a night studying. And many a night nursing his broken heart. Today, he was doing neither. It was early Saturday morning after the first week of classes and out of habit, he woke up early rather than using the day to sleep in for a bit. He figured he’d use the time to write a reply to Davet before heading down to breakfast.
The sixth year inhaled the wonderful scents of the flowers and greenery. Truly, the Hufflepuffs were fortunate to be so talented with flora. Jude sat at one of the work benches, resting his book of writing paper on his lap, absently pressing the top of his pen so that the point appeared then disappeared. He was reveling in the peacefulness of the early morning. It further motivated him to get started on his reply, which he did a few minutes later.

He had conversed with his wife about the events at the Start of Term feast. His wife (a former Gryffindor) has teased him a little but also sympathized with him too. At least, he had scared Peeves off, yes? But then again, Simon couldn’t help but think of Maria’s eyes when she looked so terrified. It reminded him of his eldest son’s first nightmare that had happened over this past summer. The eldest Holden (Arthur) had slipped into their room and shaken Simon awake. Groggily, Simon has to calm his son down before letting him slip underneath the covers with him. The monster under the bed was a very scary thing. Both kids eyes had glistened with tears threatening to spill over. He hated seeing people so upset so he decided to pay his Hufflepuffs a visit.
With newspaper underneath his right arm and mug of tea in the other, he made his way into the Garden. This was one of the wonders of the Hufflepuff Common Room that he would have envied as a Slytherin student. It was the perfect place to study and just… think.
Speaking of students and studying, he did spy Mr Anders already working on something. “Barely a week into the term and you’re already working on homework on a beautiful Saturday morning? Anders you’re a much more committed student than I was at your age. When I was in sixth year, all I wanted to do was solve mysteries and avoid tests,” chuckled Simon.
“Is this seat taken?” he asked motioning to a seat near Jude’s.

Jude knew a bit about Holden’s siblings and wouldn’t mind getting to know about his wife and kids. Holden had an interesting life and it was the family oriented nature that made him the perfect Head of House for Hufflepuff. Jude honestly could not have been happier with the choice.

A letter to a significant other? That was VERY important. Simon made a mental note to send a letter to his wife. He was decent at calling and mirroring her but a note maybe paired with some roses would be a nice surprise. Yes, he'd do that. “Thats a good idea. Is he a wizard too?” he asked. Simon assumed not but was trying his best not to assume.
A wide smile crossed Simon’s lips and he nodded. “We are. I’m his child’s godfather. Actually two of his kid’s godfathers and he’s the Godfather of my eldest, Arthur. Not to brag but he also named one of his kid’s after me….” He smiled cheekily at Jude about that last statement. Gosh… He and Ethan had been lifelong friends. The ultimate bromance. Simon was close with other friends too but there was just something incredibly unique with his friendship with Ethan. “Its as if we’re soulmates in a platonic manner.” He paused, replaying Jude’s question in his mind and then a thought came to mind. “Are you worried about a particular Ravenclaw friend of yours graduating this year?” With the older students, Simon was more familiar with who was friendly with whom.
“Yeah, never a dull moment.” He chuckled. “Well I still have my old case file in the office so stop by and I can show you some of the sketches and notes. Off the top of my head, I remember we had a research group meeting and then we looked at Runes. Professor Botros and Flamsteed helped that meeting.”
Simon was happy to hear that Jude thought spending time down here was a good thing. “Brilliant. Not that I wouldn’t want to crap your style or vice versa,” he joked with a shrug of his shoulders before chuckling and shaking his head. The next question brought a wider smile to his lips. He was touched that Jude had inquired about the family. “Family is good yeah. Bianca, my wife, is a Healer and she’s back to work after the last child. Our eldest is six already. I can’t believe it. John is fine and Moriarty is full of energy,” nodded Simon. The Holden household was a busy household indeed but his kids were all very well behaved on the most part even Moriarty!

Clearly Simon Holden was a romantic at heart! Yes, sending gifts of appreciation to one’s partner was one of the nicest things to do. Sometimes wished that he could simply owl nice things to Davet but at the moment, that was a big no-no. “He’s a Muggle. The Hufflepuff was completely digging this relationship that Holden and his bestie shared! It was neat; heartwarming. He laughed at the cheeky smile, but still very much liking this talk about the various relationships. “I love that! It’s really great when we can find a friend we can connect with on that sort of level.” Holden was the type that determined that sort of friendship. Jude did a double take at the question. Had he made things that obvious? Still, he didn’t mind because it was Holden. “Yes.” He looked down at his letter, frowning slightlys. “He’s going off on his own adventures as he figures his life out and I have this fear that he’ll find someone else to bond with and maybe he’ll like that person better.’’ Looking up at Holden again, he smiled wryly. “I don’t think I can stand losing him as a best friend either.” A few seconds later, he realised how confusing that statement sounded. A young Simon would have never considered himself to be a romantic but age and friends would change a child from a realist to someone who embraced their emotions. Hogwarts had truly shaped him into who he was today. That, and being an older brother helped. “Ah.. I see. Rather difficult to hide it all at times to those you love in the Muggle world. Might make you feel guilty but you may not be alone in that feeling. Sometimes it may make you feel reassured that you’re not alone in a weird way..” He felt like he had to explain this one more. “My eldest brother was a Muggle. He and I never saw eye to eye. The whole being different thing made it worse for a few years… but eventually he came around.” Marcus’ wife had been a huge help in remedying the siblings. Even Vi had finally gotten all of them to sit down one Christmas and just hash it out. Fortunately, Ace had made some killer desserts which helped sweeten the agreement.
It was great when one could connect on that level with another human being platonically. They were soulmates. As Holden listened to Jude, he found himself becoming silent as a realization hit him. Jude had feelings that were more than simply platonic for his good friend… That’s why… the fear of losing him was so strong. “Friends come and go in life but the ones that matter… We make an effort to keep up with. And sometimes people will make different, stronger connections but those shouldn’t change your individual friendship with your best friend. That being said, avoiding jealousy is nearly impossible at times.” It was a very human condition.
“Though I understand where you’re coming from.” He paused and realized how that could be interpreted. GAH! Not that he had feelings for Ethan like that despite what a few female students had asked him back in the day. “That comment was in relation to losing a best friend not the I have more than platonic feelings for Ethan.”
“I’ll ready the kettle for a fresh pot of tea,” he mentioned with a warm smile. And maybe he could ask the house elves to bake a few treats so that he could keep his office stocked up for those who stopped by. Simon smirked. “I’ll share as much as I can without breaking any confidentially agreements or charms.” There were some things that were still under wraps.
“Yes, I have photos of them in my office but I do have a family photo in my wallet… ” he began before remembering he had his pocket watch on him. “Actually… I have two photos on me.” He pulled out his pocket watch from the bottom of his robes’ pocket and opened it to show Jude the photo of his wife on one side and then a small photo of him and a blonde boy on the other. “Wife on one side. Holmes on the other.” He chuckled at Jude’s question. Ah the Holmes question came up. “Moriarty is… You see… My friends and I may all have a love for all things Sherlock Holmes. Ethan was Holmes, I was Watson, Bianca was Irene… I can’t remember who Josie was.. I think Zander we dubbed Lestrade or something like that. Merlin. It’s been years.”

Someone embracing their emotions was something Jude always got behind. He just didn’t see the need to keep it all bottled up and not express them. About Holden’s brother… the Hufflepuff had heard of him in passing from Holden last term but the fact that he was a Muggle did show that Holden understood where Jude was coming from. “It does indeed.Were you two at loggerheads because of your magical abilities?” But it was nice that they had worked things out eventually. He thought of Davet again; Dav definitely wasn’t the type to hold a grudge because Jude and Reagan had kept something this important. If anything, the other boy would find the magic cool. And that’s exactly why there was guilt in Jude’s heart.
Evan had reassured him more than once about their friendship after Jude had expressed how he felt. He appreciated that but there were those times when one’s own negative thoughts got in the way. Jude may be the happy-go-lucky type and usually positive, but even he fought insecurities at times. At his Head of House’s words, the sixth year nodded. “I try to remind myself of that - and that Evan’s too decent to do that sort of thing to me.” Breaking his heart didn’t count since Evan didn’t have control of his lack of feelings for him. But friendship was an entirely different thing. “I really don’t get jealous but I might if my fear comes through.” He was only human, after all. Holden’s other comment had him staring for a moment but then it was cleared up. “You lost a best friend?” Could anything be more heartbreaking?!
“That’ll be great! We just need to set a day and time and I’ll be there!’’ This guy was one hundred percent ready to hear about all of those adventures! Well, as much as Holden could tell him, that is; he completely got that some aspects were classified.
Jude… hadn’t visited Holden’s office in like… ever. Actually, he hadn’t visited a bit of the professors’ in their offices at all. He had always managed to catch them around the Castle. Looking at the pictures, he couldn’t help but smile. “Your wife is extremely beautiful, professor! Also, it’s difficult to believe you were once that young. Just kidding!” It was his little joke. It was nice, keeping pictures of your bestie after all these years. Jude nodded. “It makes sense, you and your friends having assigned nicknames like that. I think it made some bit of the SHerlock Holmes world real.” He thought it was PRETTY neat!

"At loggerheads!" chuckled Simon with a smile filled with mirth. "I haven't heard that phrase in ages.... But yes, we were at loggerheads.. We were at odds with each other about it. He was into sports and all of that. I was the stereotypical quiet younger brother who preferred to read. I'm sure you can imagine the dynamic." It had been a source of quarrel for years. It only got worse when Olivia - err, Vi now- also got to attend Hogwarts. But it became better as they grew. Everyone had their own gifts and they didn't have to be magical to be wonderful. "It's tough to share things about your life when you have to keep the world we live in a secret. It's as if we're straddling two worlds. It can feel quite isolating."
Simon remained quiet, listening to Jude as he spoke about his friendship with Mr. Nam. His eyebrows raised when the boy turned around to look at him with a face of horror and sadness. Huh? What? He replayed the words in his hand and then realised how his words could have been interpreted. "Uh.. not like that! Sorry, meant to say that both of us have someone more important in our life... We're still best friends to a degree but.. we both got married to our best friends... our wives." He paused. "What I mean to say is that you don't lose your best friend.. your relationship changes..."
He appreciated Jude's enthusiasm and nodded. "Sounds like a plan. Thursdays tend to be a bit freer from a schedule standpoint. Less classes that day." And hopefully they had seen the most of Peeves and his antics this year.
Simon let out a hearty laugh. "Yeah, that's just a stock image I found on the web. All Professors are vampires.. We are just born a certain age and never age from there," he joked. Heh. He had heard all the stories about Professors in the past. He had been just a Slytherin student before. "It did. Y'know... Simon Holden... Sherlock Holmes. Just sayin'"
He closed his pocket watch after noting the time and then stood up. Slipping the pocket watch back into his pocket, he then extended a hand out to Jude to shake his hand. A form of saying "See you". "Well I ought to let you get back to your letter, Mr. Anders. Offer still stands to come visit in my office."

Jude laughed. “My dad still uses that term on occasions. He’s not ancient but I have no idea where he picked it up from.” Hey! At least the Hufflepuff had amused his professor! He nodded, understanding the relationship the two brothers shared back then. “It must have been difficult on you both at some point. The stress of a rift…? I guess it can be telling after some time.” There was a shrug from him, knowing that if he and any of his siblings fought, it would weigh on his mind all the time until they made up. The Anders’ siblings though - especially him, Keighley and Reagan - were very close and didn’t fight. Small misunderstandings, yes, but not huge fights. “It’s exactly like that. I wish things could have been different, truthfully.” But he also understood why their world had to be kept a secret.
The Hufflepuff tried to process Holden’s next words. Yes, everyone’s lives changed and everyone’s priorities shifted. THere was a nod from him. “I think that’s something I’ll have to keep in mind.” Even more when those insecure thoughts get loud. He’d do his best. Okay, Thursdays would be great for him! He’d just have to ensure he completed most of his homework first!
Jude snorted with laughter. “That explains a lot, particularly in your case.” He may have an innocent expression on his face but he was still in his humorous mood. Yes, he recognised the ‘S.H’ initials with the two names. The sixth year took Holden’s extended hand and gave it a hearty shake. “Thanks for taking the time to chat, professor! I appreciate it! And you can be sure I’ll stop by this Thursday!’’
