Default Muggle Studies Lesson 1: #roomgoals

The time-slot right after lunch is never an ideal time to host a lesson, but with the castle’s rooms being double-booked at all times… Well, you work with what you can get. So that’s precisely what your professor is doing: working with it. And by it, I mean his Rubik’s cube.

Anyway. ANYWAY. AnYwAy.

The classroom is very special for your first Muggle Studies lesson of the year. Yes, it is true that the desks and chairs are all in rows facing the front of the room, as expected. BUT ((and there is always a but)) they aren't just any desks and chairs. They are all sorts of whacky chairs (beanbags! stools! benches! tall chairs! small chairs! red chairs! blue chairs! cushions for chairs! buckets for chairs! so ! many !! weird !!! chairs !!!!). And all sorts of whacky desks too, actually come to think of it… Everything about the decor is whacky today… From the fuzzy rugs to the big picture frames to the funky wallpaper…

Not-so-whacky, however, is Professor Schmoe, who could be found next to his own desk (a far more traditional piece) waiting to greet you as you find a place to sit. On the chalkboard there is a written request that you create a name-tent for yourself with the piece of paper left on your desk. Finneas even made one for himself as an example. Buckle up, kiddos! Let’s LEARN stuff today!

OKAY so Carsyn PROBABLY should have been more specific in answering the question. But in her defense, Schmoe hadn't asked for broad or specific, so obviously she would go with broad. Half listening to her peers, her hands instinctively went to her ears at the shrieking. UMMMMM did YA HAVE TO DO THAT?!? No note taking for her and she'd have to read the chalkboard later, when her headache went away cause OW.

Brainstorm deeper?? The penetrating shriek to her eardrums wasn't deep enough? Hands still covering her ears, she glanced over Carys to see if she was as affected by the noise. Was anyone else affected? She was going to need something for the ringing. Apparently that free period after this class was going to be spent visiting the hospital wing, if Schmoe continued.

Considerations ..... they couldn't change the style of the furniture whenever they felt like it? Which was said already by someone who wasn't affected by the screeches. And Carsyn not fully concentrating couldn't think of another answer. Especially as the professor screeched the chalk AGAIN.

Design a room. The bathroom? It would be super easy to do cause how much design could into a bathroom .... maybe some wall decor about poo. Carsyn glanced around, making eye contact with her sister to see if she'd want to partner with her.

So.

Kaiser was dealing with a little bit of excess salt over here. His brain was still very much stuck on the 'it doesn't matter' track, and the fact that Schmoe was now having them do a whole thing about listing furniture for a room was just...

... irritating. It was irritating.

Being tired probably didn't help, either.

Kaiser ended up levelling Schmoe with a steady look for about half a minute before he eventually did heave himself up from his cushion and go up to collect one of the post-its. He had already decided to work alone, because he wasn't sure anyone would really agree with his line of thinking.

Returning to his cushion, Kaiser spread the post-it out on the floor, because his chair-desk wasn't quite big enough. In big letters, he wrote the name of the room he was 'furnishing', and added the list below. It didn't take him very long.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Fiona very nearly said a very rude word at the sound of the chalk on the chalkboard but knowing the rules, she merely winced and didn't utter a sound. This activity was something that she wanted to tackle on her own. Instantly she knew which room she was going to design as it was her favourite place either at home or visiting relatives.

Fiona grabbed a poster-sized post-it from Professor Schmoe's desk and made her way back to her beanbag and desk and began to think about her design. What took her some time was remembering the names of the items that Muggles used in a kitchen. After all, she was used to magic being used for cooking.

Text Cut: Kitchen Design

Room - Kitchen

Furnishings Required

  • Sink with Taps (Hot/Cold)
  • Dishwasher
  • Fridge/Freezer
  • Slide-out drawers for utensils/cutlery
  • Wooden cabinets for storage
  • Pantry for food
  • Oven/Stovetop/Rangehood
  • Microwave
  • Toaster
  • Kettle
  • Table and chairs for dining
  • Light/Electricity to make certain items work
  • Non-carpeted flooring
  • Tiles for parts of the wall

Fiona put her pencil down and stretched her arms above her head and put them back down. She really couldn't think of anything else.

Gemma could barely keep her attention on this child-like man. Sure he knew what he was talking about but Merlin that chalkboard was annoying.

Letting her mind wander to somewhere other than this class, Gemma nearly missed their next task. Design a room?? That seemed too tedious. From what she had learned Muggles and Wizards had the same spaces and equipment so what was the purpose.

At least she could work alone. That was easier. Claudine was also working alone and Gemma didn't want to bother her again and Phoebe had paired off with someone. She reluctantly got up from her cushion, grabbing a post-it from Professor Schmoe's desk. Now what room to design.

A living room?? That worked.

SPOILER!!: living room design

LIVING ROOM

- Couch(es)
- Moving picture box T.V.
- Lights??
- PILLOWS

Her list may seem small but what more could you want. You had somewhere to sit, lights to see, something to entertain yourself and squishy pillows. It seemed like the perfect room.

Had she answered any of the questions? No, but then that was mostly because any of the answers Carys had thought of were said by others rather than her not having anything to say. For one, the screech of the chalk on the chalkboard was getting rather annoying, but she wasn’t going to say anything about that either. She wasn’t going to outwardly cringe like her sister was, either, upon glancing over at Carsyn and seeing her hands over her ears. Although maybe slouching down into her fuzzy beanbag chair was working rather like earmuffs anyhow. If she juuust scrunched down a bit more anyway…

Oh. They were doing an activity, so she sat back up just the tiniest bit. Pair work was easy, duh. She had a ready-made partner, and she knew they worked well together. Plus, it probably meant there wouldn’t be any more screeching chalk for a while. “So what kind of room do you want to design?,” she asked, boosting herself up more in her seat as she waited for her twin to answer. There were plenty of options she could think of. But then most of her ideas probably revolved around artwork to go on the walls rather than anything else.

HMMMM, were Muggle rooms really that different from wizard rooms in terms of furnishings? Bernie thought not. Everything she'd seen so far in this castle was pretty much the same as what you'd find in ANY castle. She hadn't visited another castle, though, so she wasn't sure WHAT all castles contained... well anyway. Wizards weren't that different from Muggles, even with their animated portraits and enchanted carriages.

She let out a small hmmmph to herself as she climbed down from her stool and high top and made her way to the giant sticky note. She made sure to glare suspiciously at the teacher before ripping off her Post-It, and then heading back to her stool. Once Bernie was perched in place again, she started writing.

Her answer was correct? Okay, that's good. Great, even. She was just randomly rambling on the idea of how muggles are like towards picking their furniture. Anyway, she smiled back at him softly. He entertained to everyone's answer and then began writing on the board. Ugh. That sound. She grimaced at how that chalk sounds and Jillian eyed both his hands that are covered in chalk. This man loves chalk. Chalk chalk chalk chalk.

Focusing back on the board, she listens as the professor continued his lecture. AAAAAAAANNNND of course, an activity comes up where they have to play house like little kids but in list down your imagination form. Jillian knows that working alone on this would be a lot easier. It will be more cohesive when it comes to designing and pattern-wise. She stood up to get herself one of those poster-sized post-its. The faster she will do this, the earlier she will finish. On her way towards the professor's desk she was thinking of what room she will be designing for this activity. Something simple and that needed littlest to no designing needed. Was Jillian tired? Not really but it was best if she worked wisely on this one.

Taking one giant post-it, she dashed back to hear seat. She started scribbling on the paper and jotted down things she usually see in a muggle house. Granted she has only been to 3 in her lifetime.

SPOILER!!: Post-it

Dining Room

Designs:
  • long table
  • comfortable chairs (approx. 8 chairs)
  • thick curtains (if there is a window)
  • centerpiece on the table
  • plates and glasses (wine glasses)
  • utensils
  • chandelier or any light designs...?
  • a family picture

Hmmm....

Does she need more? The professor didn't really specify how many stuff they will put in on this.

looks good already.

Okay.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine went about setting the post- it neatly on her desk then sharpening her pencil. Having a sharp point on the instrument was important to her. Once that was done, she got down to the work. It didn’t take long, or so she hoped, as this was common sense. She did think that some of the equipment in a Muggle’s kitchen would be different from a witch’s or a wizard’s; and possibly there would be less in the latter’s because magic was on their side.

SPOILER!!: Claudine’s List for a Kitchen

Name: Claudien Blaze
Year: First
House: Slytherin
Room chosen: Kitchen
  1. Stove
  2. Sink
  3. Cooking utensils
  4. Eating utensils
  5. Tables for preparing ingredients
  6. Cold storage unit to keep food from going bad
  7. Cupboards

Claudine thought that was all that she would need for her kitchen. She knew that Muggles kept more equipment in their kitchens like a rectangular box that heated food quickly. Could she remember the name? No… just as she could not remember the name for the cold storage unit.

He began to recall his old room with his mom. His heart did a bit of a twinge, he never realized how much he missed her.

"You'll want a bed and dresser.... and if you are really cool you'll have a TV" He added thinking of how he begged his mom for a TV and an XBOX.

Default Catching Q2 + working alone for mini activity
Swedishfish Girl! Madame Librarian! Jess's Soul Sister! Sweetest Swede!

Cole was wriggling around in his beanbag chair trying to find a more comfortable position when Professor Schmoe moved on the lesson. He was happy to see how his answer went up on the chalkboard as important. It warmed. Maybe he could like Professor Schmoe with his weird dressing style and classroom furniture? Time would tell. Back to the lesson and the new question. Cole wasn’t sure what to answer at first because didn’t muggle and wizards consider the same things when buying furniture even though wizards had some magical advantages? Shrugging to himself he was quiet for a long while but then he raised his hand to say "If your buying a sofa for example you have to consider size, weight and how comfortable it is and how to transport it home. Muggles cars can’t be extended with magic like ours and same with how to get it inside the living room without breaking other furniture, because sofas are usually big and heavy."

Then mini activity was then introduced. They we’re going to furnish a room of their choosing either alone or in pairs and list what items they thought muggles would want in a particular room. Weird. Muggles probably wanted the same things muggles did. Getting out from his chair Cole went up front and got himself a post it note from Professor Schmoes desk. Back at his desk he stuck the sticky note thingy on his desk before he slumped down in his chair and got to work.

Professor Schmoe traveled around the room, tuning into the various conversations and making silent observations on the work that was being done. For the most part, he was quite pleased. It was a simple enough task, wizards used furniture too. Nothing like a good ol' similarities project to get the ball rolling at the start of the term. Mhm.

"Fifteen more minutes, everyone!" He called out. They all seemed to be on track. Woooooooo.

OOC: You still have AT LEAST 24 Hours for this activity!

There were so many good potential options! It was like she was a real room designer, or whatever Muggles called those people.
It looked like most had begun the activity to some extent, though there were still those looking for a partner. Finneas paused when he walked upon young Avalon. "You can also join an existing pair and make it a group of three, if you need," he said encouragingly. Or she could work alone, y'know? He could help! That was his JOB. Wooooooooooo. Anyway.

Something about those three. Was it a coincidence that they were all in the same house? No, probably not. The Slytherins were nerve wracking even in his time as a student.

Anyway, anyway, anyway.

"Errrrrrrrrr....." Finneas scratched his head, peering over Kaiser's shoulder and looking at his... "list". Yes, well, uh. "I can.... understand your reasoning," because he had shared it with the class, sort of. But. Uh. Well. Uh. "But for the sake of the next activity.... It would be helpful if you... Came up with a few items...." Because. Well. Yes.

And if not. Well. Uh. Hopefully it wouldn't come to that. Because he had schmoe more ideas at the moment.

"Hi!" Lucas was nice to her, which Cecelia liked because you couldn't ALWAYS count on older kids wanting you around. PLUS, he'd read her mind, his room suggestion making her grin. "That's what I was thinking, too! Great minds, right?" They were both REALLY on the same page here.

...Speaking of pages, Cecelia held up her finger to indicated she'd be back in ONE second, and hurried to grab one of those BIG sticky note papers so they could write down ALL their ideas.

"Ooookay, here we go." She stuck it to the wall 'cause the surface was flat and wrote a big GAME ROOM title at the top. "How about a sofa! Like, well, muggles have those game things that connect to the televisions and you don't even have to get UP to play. Bet you'd want somewhere comfy to SIT, though!" She hurried and added SOFA to the list. "Also, also, also...they'd need a television to play the game ON." It only made sense, so she added TELEVISION, too.

What kind of room was he working on? She tilted her head until she could read the label - Private Study. As opposed to a public study? Why was Eiji so decidedly and fiercely anti-social? All. The. Time.

She flopped on the end of his desk and brandished her own quill. "Can we have a soda fountain in this study? And maybe a water slide leading down into the pool out back? No thanks on all three things but he couldn't turn Phoebe down THREE times.

That grin was enough to tell him that the Game Room was a good suggestion. There was another sigh of relief from the fourth year as he offered her a wide smile in return. "Great minds!" He would've offered her a high five to go with the statement but that might be saved for after they were done with this list.

Speaking of, Cece seemed to be flying ahead. Lucas's eyebrows shot up as she raced to get a piece of paper and then started writing her ideas. Did her brain work that quickly? Or was the Game Room really her favourite room and she just happened to know exactly what it needed? He didn't know anything about her or her family, this might just be true.

Right. Game Room. Which so far had a sofa and a tv. "What about the games? I mean, it wouldn't be a game room without games, right?" Was that an obvious answer? Maybe he should smarten it up. "Video games, mostly, but board games, too." Pause. "And what about a table? For any food or drinks they bring with them to eat or drink while playing?" Why hadn't they done a science room, instead?

That list needed more excitement than just her soda fountain, and Phoebe squished up her face at him. Maybe if he cracked half a smile... they could add a fainting couch. Every good house needed one solid, long couch for dramatic fits. Didn't anyone have dramatic fits at Eiji's house?

"You need more chairs. You need chairs so you can sit in your big, fancy chair and put your hands under your chin and stare disapprovingly at the people sitting on the other side." She demonstrated with her hands under her own chin. He could provide the stare. "And I think we need two heavy doors that can open out when you want to slam through them in a huff. They need to lock, since it's private in your study. And lighting... overhead or lamps? You don't wanna rely on sunlight, candles, and young eyes."

At least she wasn't pouting and making cruppy eyes at him for not immediately including her water slide and whatever else it was she had mentioned. He had a soft spot for that look, something Rebecca was unfortunately picking up on more and more these days.

"I like that," chuckles and adds the detailing about the doors. Though did she hear herself sometimes? She sounded like someone far older than a first year when she was talking about young eyes. That was clearly Uncle Max's influence. "Overhead lighting to maximize the space." He found floor lamps ridiculous and just things that were going to get knocked over. "..how about I compromise with your surplus of chairs and we include a sofa in the design." And some more scribbling. And because he was feeling a little less uptight, he made her an offer. "You can pick three decorative items. Any."

And he passed the piece of parchment her way for her to write them down herself.

And if not. Well. Uh. Hopefully it wouldn't come to that. Because he had schmoe more ideas at the moment.
Predictably enough, it wasn't long before Schmoe passed by on his rounds. As he peered over his shoulder, Kaiser leaned back and slightly out of the way, to give him an easier view of the large post-it note. No point hiding it. Why would he have written it if he only wanted to hide it?

After Schmoe gave his response, Kaiser turned his head to look at him. Just for a moment. Then he smiled slightly, ever-so-slightly, and went back to write something else.

See? He could compromise.

curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

Considering the LAST time she'd partnered up to make a poster with someone, she'd ended the lesson in tears - Nettie decided to go solo this time. Not that she minded. It was an easy enough task - one she could probably finish in like, five minutes maybe? It was interesting - SCHMOE was interesting, and she was enjoying the lesson thus far.

She walked up to the front and grabbed her giant post-it before returning to her desk, where Eiji and one of his first year buddies had partnered up. D'awwww. How sweet of him. Refocusing her attention, she looked at her post-it and screwed up her mouth in concentration. Hmmmm. What was she going to design?

Maybe...a craft room! She'd really like that if she had her own home. A place for her paints, a place for some sewing materials if she wanted to take up sewing a place for knitting if she wanted to take up knitting. There were plenty of possibilities!

She started to get to work, scribbling down her ideas hurriedly as they came to her.

There were so many good potential options! It was like she was a real room designer, or whatever Muggles called those people.
Seeing as Siobhán VERY MUCH doubted that Oda wanted to work with her (she was gonna have to try harder to convince that girl to be her friend, hmm), she quickly looked around the room after hearing the professor say that they would have to partner up. Or should. Anyway, between working alone and having the option to partner up, Shivvy would most definitely always pick the second option.

Working on your own was incredibly boring. Also she didn't think she'd get ANYTHING done.

"ME!" Hello. The other girl looked familiar. Sort of. She'd definitely seen her around Hogwarts. Probably. "Hi. I'm Siobhán. What's your name? I think we should do a pantry. That's where the food is." Shivvy said all this loudly while walking over to the Ravenclaw, grinning all the while. Yes, good plan. "I'll get us that poster." And with that she turned right back around on her heels to head to the front of the classroom.

Hello Professor Schmoe. Hi.

Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Again, the sounds of the chalkboard went in one ear and out the other. Tina was more concerned with the words written on the board than the noises made by the actual writing process. She quickly jotted down the list in her notes, looking up from the page as Schmoe mentioned rooms. Well yes, that was an important consideration, but she wasn't surprised no one brought it up. He'd asked for something unique to non magiques, and that… wasn't.*

Tina listened to the instructions for the activity, relieved to hear they had the option to work alone. Yeah… she didn't do group work. She could do it faster on her own. She looked at the list of room choices on the board. This activity was going to be right up her alley! For a long time, she'd dreamed of having a home of her own and how she might furnish it. Now there was just the question of which room to pick. In the end she went with a room that wasn't listed on the board: the living room. It was the room for which she had the clearest idea of a design.

Having decided on a room, Tina went up to the professor's desk to get a poster sized post-it. Why did they need to be so big? If they were going to actually draw their room designs, she could understand the size, but if they were just listing, it seemed a bit much. But it wasn't worth arguing over. She took the giant post-it back to her seat, arranging it as neatly as she could over her desk, and picked up her pen. Now what would she put in her living room?

Tina's style in furniture was simple and multifunctional. She'd need a sofa for sure, something in a neutral color so it could match a wide variety of aesthetics. And for the material… probably leather because it would last a long time and be fairly easy to clean, and ooh! How about a sofa with a pull-out bed, in case she ever had guests? Yes, that would be perfect! What else? A couple of armchairs that matched the sofa for additional guest seating and footstools to go with each chair, but not just any footstools! She wanted the footstools that doubled as storage cubes. She wanted to get as much use out of her furniture as possible!

That was probably enough seating, so what else did she need? Tina thought for a minute. If there were chairs and a sofa, there should be tables too. How about a couple of end tables? One on each side of the sofa… something in a dark wood that wouldn't be too loud - and shelves! They needed to have shelves built in too. Should she also include a coffee table? Most living rooms had one, but she thought it might make the room seem too cluttered, especially given the fact that she'd probably be adding more furniture to her "room". She decided to go without the coffee table and include an extra end table between the two chairs instead.

Now that she had the basics covered, Tina could focus on adding some more personal touches to her living room. She definitely wanted a bookshelf - what else would you expect from a bookworm like her? It would be a big one in the same color wood as the end tables, and she'd have an entertainment stand that could hold a television and a stereo too. Then her thoughts turned to things she could use to decorate that weren't, strictly speaking, considered furniture, like wall art, curtains, pillows, and maybe an area rug. Oh, and lamps! She'd almost forgotten about those. Let's see… something with a metal base; that way it would be less likely to break if it got knocked over.

As she finished writing, Tina gave her list a quick look over. That was a good start! Maybe she'd think of things to add to it if she had time later.

Text Cut: Tina's List

Oh, OH, and ALSO a television stand for the television to sit on so it doesn't get all wobbly and fall over and BREAK." That would be an unbearable tragedy for the owners of this game room, obviously. "Think they'd need anything else?" She sort of just assumed their would be light available in the room that didn't involve lamps because lamps belonged in more stuffy kind of rooms as far as SHE was concerned. Other than that, she couldn't think of much else you'd NEED.

The girl's enthusiasm hadn't gone unnoticed and was something he was quite grateful for. Quite. There was the loudness that came with it as well but..... uh, he was choosing to ignore that. Yep, ignore.

"Exactly!" Both were good answers, but the shelves part got him wondering if a cupboard was also needed if they had shelves. The answer? Probably not. He had no idea about video games but he had a funny feeling that if you had a collection, you'd want to show it off. Like books. They looked nice on shelves that you can show off.

Now. What else? "What about extra armchairs? Especially very comfortable ones? For guests and friends that don't fit on the sofa?" Even if, to him, one sofa sounded like it would be enough but...... he wasn't telling Cece that. "Aaaaaaand......." Hmmm. "Some cool lighting? I don't know if you need it but if you're playing a game, especially on the TV, you'd want the lighting to match, right?"

Those lights could be cool, she guessed. "You know, I think this game room would be really fun to hang out in. Guess muggles don't have it SO bad. They have fun in their own ways, even if those ways are different. Wonder what video games are like. Have you ever played any?" She was curious. Her family had muggle ties, so she knew some things, but she'd always been more about exploring wizarding pastimes. Maybe she'd enjoy the muggle ones, too. Maybe.

Also, she was PRETTY sure they were done, so now they could just hang out until the next task. Cecelia was GOOD at hanging out.

After Schmoe gave his response, Kaiser turned his head to look at him. Just for a moment. Then he smiled slightly, ever-so-slightly, and went back to write something else.

See? He could compromise.

Finneas looked into Kaiser's eyes for all of one mili-second before nervously looking off to a point just beyond them.

Ho, ho, ho. Ahahahah. This was fine.

Anyway. "T-thank you, Kaiser," he bumbled about just before turning to check on the others. Compromise. It wasn't ideal that the boy had only picked one item, but surely he'd write some more down before the end of the activity... Right? And if not... Well.... One item was better than no item....? Yes, anyway.

This pair was an unlikely duo, though Finneas ought to be the last person to describe anything as unlikely. "Excellent work," he paused, reading over Eiji's shoulder.... The sodafountain made him smile in that Schmoe way of his.

"Very crafty of you," he grinned. Ehehehe. Geddit? He liked the creativity. He didn't stop here for too long, however, as it looked like the Prefect was making excellent progress.

The next pair were quite the dynamic duo. He smiled to himself as he made his way over to their workspace along the wall. "Extra armchairs," he noted. "Here to entertain, I see," good good. They were doing very well, yes.

SPOILER!!: Tina

Living Room

Sofa - neutral color, leather material for easy cleaning
Arm chairs (2) - same color & material as sofa
Footstools (2) - matching color to sofa & chairs, doubles as storage cube
End tables (3) - dark wood, built-in shelves
Bookshelf - matching color wood to end tables
Entertainment stand - matching color to tables & bookshelf, large size to fit television & stereo
Television
Stereo
Wall Art
Curtains
PIllows
Area rug?
Lamps (3) - table lamps, metal base for added durability

"A very comprehensive list, Tina," he noted as he walked by. With numbers and everything. They were so intelligent. Incredible students. Reminded him a little bit of himself back in the day, tbh.

Hi.

There were so many good potential options! It was like she was a real room designer, or whatever Muggles called those people.

He was quite pleased to see Siobhán reach out to Avalon. She was very helpful this lesson, it seemed. First with the Odaline case, and now here. He smiled at both of them, knowing that they were off to a great start already.

"Appreciate the depth, Cole," he smiled as he clumsily worked his way through the classroom. Good, good. DETAIL. Detail was EXCELLENT. He gave the boy an awkward TWO thumbs up. Because that's what cool kids did, yeah?

"You'll want a bed and dresser.... and if you are really cool you'll have a TV" He added thinking of how he begged his mom for a TV and an XBOX.

"I was thinking of doing a kid's room, but what do you think?" She didn't want to force the idea on him. "Oh! Do you wanna grab us the Poster?" It was kinda hard getting up from her beanbag.

He liked these two. They were very enthusiastic. He gave them an awkward smile and a thumbs up as he walked past. "Keep up the great work," and clumsily continued to weave through the room.

She did think that some of the equipment in a Muggle’s kitchen would be different from a witch’s or a wizard’s; and possibly there would be less in the latter’s because magic was on their side.

SPOILER!!: Claudine’s List for a Kitchen

Name: Claudien Blaze
Year: First
House: Slytherin
Room chosen: Kitchen
  1. Stove
  2. Sink
  3. Cooking utensils
  4. Eating utensils
  5. Tables for preparing ingredients
  6. Cold storage unit to keep food from going bad
  7. Cupboards

Claudine thought that was all that she would need for her kitchen. She knew that Muggles kept more equipment in their kitchens like a rectangular box that heated food quickly. Could she remember the name? No… just as she could not remember the name for the cold storage unit.

Schmoe continued bumbling his way through the classroom, pausing just behind Claudine to read over her list. He pointed to the sixth item on her list, "Refrigerator and freezer," he gently reminded her before bumbling away.

SPOILER!!: Jillian

Okay.

He lingered by Jillian's list for a moment, skimming down the items she had jotted down. "Family photo," he mused. "Good touch." And then he bumbled off to the next student.

Any skepticism from this one was absolutely unnoticed. Finneas did, however, give her an awkward smile in response to her suspicious glare. It was kind of intense. Did she always look at people like that? Yikes. Made him shiver a bit. But it looked like she was working 'n all sooooooo Schmoe big deal.

He was quite pleased with the work they were all producing. Though some pairs had yet to begin, he had full confidence in their ability to work! Excellent, excellent. He gave the twins an encouraging look. Also. He would never be able to tell them apart, probably.

"Lights are very important, yes," he laughed nervously as he passed by. Why were there question marks? Lights were necessary if one wanted to see??? Anyway, anyway, AnYwAy.

Fiona grabbed a poster-sized post-it from Professor Schmoe's desk and made her way back to her beanbag and desk and began to think about her design. What took her some time was remembering the names of the items that Muggles used in a kitchen. After all, she was used to magic being used for cooking.

Text Cut: Kitchen Design

Room - Kitchen

Furnishings Required

  • Sink with Taps (Hot/Cold)
  • Dishwasher
  • Fridge/Freezer
  • Slide-out drawers for utensils/cutlery
  • Wooden cabinets for storage
  • Pantry for food
  • Oven/Stovetop/Rangehood
  • Microwave
  • Toaster
  • Kettle
  • Table and chairs for dining
  • Light/Electricity to make certain items work
  • Non-carpeted flooring
  • Tiles for parts of the wall

Fiona put her pencil down and stretched her arms above her head and put them back down. She really couldn't think of anything else.

"Well done," he commented, noting Fiona's excellent work. She was quite thorough. He appreciated that.

Finneas clumsily made his way back to the front of the room (only bumping into three tables). After checking his watch, and deciding that everyone was just about at the point he wanted them to reach... He cleared his throat. Aheh. ANYWAY. "Excellent work, everyone," he twiddled his thumbs, leaning back on his desk. "Please return to your desks," for those who had moved around the classroom.

"As you can see, there are obviously many points of similarity between how a Muggle and Wizard may choose to furnish a room. There are, however, some differences." Yes? Yes. "For example, I saw some televisions, microwaves, toasters..." He trailed off. "Some items do not make their way past the magical barrier... We'll speak about those next week." SPOILERS. Magical barrier. Was that a thing? Well it was now. For all intents and purposes. ANYWAY.

"Let's think back to something Gemma and Cole had touched on at the beginning of the class.... IKEA." Did they remember that? Hopefully. If not. Well. ANYWAY. "Ikea is a muggle furniture store that designs and sells ready-to-assemble furniture. It's the LARGEST furniture retailer... And it has locations in many, many, MANY countries." EmPhAsIs on many. "Most Ikea stores will take you through a series of showrooms, where you can see the furniture in their natural habitats, much like the room examples you put together yourselves." SEEEEEEE the activities always had a purpose, ok? Don't doubt him. "Most stores also have their own foodcourts with local cuisine and cheap ice cream." Honestly, if it weren't for the fact that he did not trust 50 prepubescent children to not break the statute of secrecy, they would've taken a field trip instead of doing this in classroom stuff.

Anyway, anyway, AnYwAy.

"In a moment... I'm going to come around and hand each of you an Ikea catalogue," he blinked six times. One. Two. Three. Four FIVE SIX. He clumsily began weaving his way through the room, placing a thick muggle-catalogue on each desk as he made his way. "For the remainder of class, I would like you each to find and then circle a couple of items that you had included on your lists. When doing so, I suggest taking into consideration components the catalogues include such as material descriptions, size measurements, and prices," because that's what anyone would have to do when putting together a room, you seeeee? It was all for the illusion.

"After class, I will take a look at the items you marked down and place a few orders.... And when they come in, we will BUILD the furniture together!" How FUN. But that was also for next time. Soz. "You'll have until the end of class to do this!"

OOC: Woooo, thank you so much for making it this far with me. That was A LOT. Basically this is the activity:
Look through the IKEA Website and find two or three pieces of furniture from the list that your charrie had put together during the Mini-Activity (or pretend like they were on the list lol). Ideally, I'd love to see some LINKS in your post.

Buuuuuut, if that's too much and not a possibility. Then you can also just include like a tiny description of the items they circled (whether or not, you, as the RPer actually looked through the website.)
You'll have at least 60 Hours to do this! Let me know if you have any questions, Schmoe and I will be around.
