Default Muggle Studies Lesson 1: #roomgoals

The time-slot right after lunch is never an ideal time to host a lesson, but with the castle’s rooms being double-booked at all times… Well, you work with what you can get. So that’s precisely what your professor is doing: working with it. And by it, I mean his Rubik’s cube.

Anyway. ANYWAY. AnYwAy.

The classroom is very special for your first Muggle Studies lesson of the year. Yes, it is true that the desks and chairs are all in rows facing the front of the room, as expected. BUT ((and there is always a but)) they aren't just any desks and chairs. They are all sorts of whacky chairs (beanbags! stools! benches! tall chairs! small chairs! red chairs! blue chairs! cushions for chairs! buckets for chairs! so ! many !! weird !!! chairs !!!!). And all sorts of whacky desks too, actually come to think of it… Everything about the decor is whacky today… From the fuzzy rugs to the big picture frames to the funky wallpaper…

Not-so-whacky, however, is Professor Schmoe, who could be found next to his own desk (a far more traditional piece) waiting to greet you as you find a place to sit. On the chalkboard there is a written request that you create a name-tent for yourself with the piece of paper left on your desk. Finneas even made one for himself as an example. Buckle up, kiddos! Let’s LEARN stuff today!

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Fiona had to refrain from rolling her eyes. This was one odd teacher. No, make that person. At Professor Schmoe's question, Fiona raised her hand and answered. "I've heard of something called a yard sale where Muggles place their used furniture in the front of their houses and ask for a selling price. Sometimes there would be a sign saying 'Free' meaning the item is of no cost to the buyer."

So this was her life, now. The professor didn’t comment or anything, so Anna was going to stay right here on this cushion with the too-tall desk.

She did sit up a little straighter when class started, though. She could barely see over the top of the desk. It was fine. They weren’t doing any writing yet, so she didn’t really even need her desk. And her hand could be seen when she raised it. Which, she did. “Some muggles make furniture. Out of wood and tools and stuff.” Seemed like a lot of work to her, but maybe it was a pride thing. Or a boredom thing.

Cole had slipped in just a few minutes before the lesson got started. Not sure where to sit and a little stressed he had hurried over to snatch the vacant beanbag chair next to his cousins; Carys and Carsyn. Obviously he had noted the weird decor of the classroom and had waved in greeting to professor Schome because he had some manners. Cole had of course also gotten his required name tag er tent up.

And so the class started. Jillian thought it was odd that the professor didn't greet her back but she didn't think much of it. She enjoys listening to this class, there are tons of stuff to learn in the hopes that one day she gets to visit the muggle world. Seems fun with their technology and their non moving images.

To start off, the first question is about where muggles get their furniture. Jillian knows that muggles buy anything in this online thing... She's not sure what it is exactly nor what it looks like. She's not even sure how it works but she has heard of it from one of her aunt's friends. Raising her hand to answer "a..... am-... i think it's called Amazon" or something like that.

Patrick had stayed fairly quiet when he had entered the classroom, taking note that they were supposed to have their name on a piece of paper. He hated this part. It gave the new professors all a reason to call on people... by name no less. Sighing he grabbed his pen and quickly wrote out his name

Placing the name card tent facing Professor Schmoe he waited for class to begin.

Listening to what the question was.... How to get furniture in the muggle way. Well for starters they didn't get new furniture every time they moved. That was costly and he would hate to see exactly how much that cost. Then he had to hold back his laughing at some of their answers, or attempts at answers. Although he supposed if he hadn't grown up in a muggle style he would have felt the same way.

Yet, he wasn't sure how exactly he was supposed to say his answer because someone already said yard sales, some people make thiers, Ikea, Amazon.... He supposed he had one answer, "Sometimes the original purchaser will pass it on to their relatives. Like my great grandparents gave my parents a kitchen table that they had used." He supposed some people didn't like such a thing as it made it really hard to match the furniture. He jotted down some of the other answers to take note of what the others had said.

Of course Finneas had skipped his lunch (something he would regret in approximately ten minutes) in order to arrive an entire two hours early. He was... antsy in anticipation (HA) for the first lesson of the year. But he had managed to find a comfortable position leaning against his desk, his focus on the Rubik's cube in his hands when the first student arrived. "... G-good day," he echoed back, looking up briefly and giving her an incredibly awkward, over-eager... toothy sort of grin.

Leaning against his desk was no longer comfortable was anything ever comfortable when your name is Finneas Schmoe?, and so the lanky Professor decided not to lean. He was standing when Yoyo made her way inside. His thumb awkwardly fiddled with his Cube as he looked next to her. "... Yes," immediately forgetting that he did not, in fact, eat lunch today. And then immediately remembering. And then, "Expanding the palette. Heh?" He was going to shut his mouth now.

No, no more standing. He was going to sit. On his chair. Because sitting was better than standing.

Until this. This was... unexpected. And unplanned for. And Finneas' face went almost as red as it went during the Feast. UM. His eyes moved from one end of the room to another in a brief moment of panic as he quickly jumped up from his chair and uh uh uh uh was forced to think on his TOES. "You.... can..... use my chair for this lesson." YES. Excellent thinking, Schmoe! Heh heh heh. ANYWAY.

Anyway. Anyway. He grabbed his chair, clunk clunk CLUNKing it along as he quite literally dragged it out from behind his own desk and moved it to sit in front of one of the more normal desks in the middle of he room. And an uncomfortable smile to finish it off!!!!!!!! She wouldn't cry, right? Because she could have whatever she wanted!!! As long as she didn't cry. Because. Yes.

”Thank you,” his face lit up with the momentary confidence booster that ‘so cool’ gave him. Yeah. He could be cool and hip and one with the youths. It almost even made him forget this disastrous chair situation. Almost. It was hard to forget when you were standing right at the frontline, as he was.

Well… He had done his part. Dragged the chair. Now Odaline had options. His chair. Or bench with her… friend? Yes. Well. Finneas was just going to… take…. a step…. in that… direction… where…. you know…. ANYWAY.

Finneas was still addressing Odaline's chair situation when Eloise made her way into the classroom. "Oh-ho," he spun around to greet the girl with an awkward smile and a delayed response. "Fantastic, Ms....... Soul," he eyed her name tent with suspicion.

He wasn't born yesterday. He KNEW.... that her first name couldn't possibly just be the letter 'R'. That would be a ridiculous name.

Finneas was walking right back to the front of the room when young Pascal walked into the room. "Hello student!" he greeted back with just as much enthusiasm, a strange wave, and a whole lotta regret. It was.... an immediate reaction. "That's," was his smile too big? Did it look like he was thinking too hard about it? (Because he was). "Greeeaaaaaaat."

With each new student to walk in, there was a new opportunity to embarrass himself. Which meant he quite nearly dropped his Rubik's cube right as Cecelia entered. Nearly. But he caught it!!

Oh no, he did not ca-- Oh wait, spoke to soo-- OH NO he didn'-- Oh, oh, oh YES. He caught it. Barely. But at what cost? Because he was all the way bent over when Cecelia offered a greeting and had to look up at her with his back all curled. He did, however, offer her a single thumbs up in return. Cool and hip and one with the kids. That's Schmoe, alright.

He was right-side up again, if that was a concern.

And he also appreciated students that didn't make him do the whole student-professor greeting business. That was nice of her. He hated that part too. It made him antsy. Though the sour face was ... concerning. Was it the bowtie? Some people really hated bowties.

Afternoon. "Yes." It was afternoon. "Thursday." It was also Thursday and that was also a fact. He liked this game.

Anyway, AnYwAy, ANYWAY. His name tent had very tiny, tiny writing. Which. Was. Not. Ideal. Schmoe had to SQUINT. Which made him look even NERDIER than usual. Thanks, kid.

Y'know, to be fair. A classroom like this would've confused the heck out of student!Schmoe too. But it was too late for that. "Good, mmm, afternoon," he chimed back, his eyes curiously following the boy as he chose a place to sit.

Oh. That did not look comfortable. Schmoe almost wanted to point out that there were plenty of other options... But then he didn't. Because he finished his Cube.

Ha, ha, ha. Rubik's cubes, amiright? Finneas looked up from the object in his hands to briefly make eye-contact with the young girl. Beady eyes. Fleeting stares. Awkward smile. All in a days work! He continued to smile and continued to nod all the way until she found a seat. He was so good at this.

"That's a...." he paused, the mini-Schmoes in his head were running around trying to find the right words to finish the sentence. "... suggestion." He smiled far too widely. It wasn't a good suggestion because he couldn't teach if he was slinking in a beanbag chair. But he couldn't say that it was a bad suggestion because there is no such thing.

.................... As for the name yert.

It was............................. unhelpful. But he continued to smile in that weirdly uncomfortable way of his. Because. Well. Anyway.

Schmoe forgot to greet this one. He just stared back at her in an empty hallow way as she greeted him and made her way to a desk. Sometimes that happened.

Yes, this WAS in fact the classroom!!!! The Schmoe must go on, amiright?! "It is, indeed!" A good afternoon, that is. Some of them weren't so good. The time an owl pooped on his head? The most miserable afternoon.

............ Well. He supposed that was one way to do it. Though, like the name yert... It did not entirely fulfill the purpose of the name tent. But Schmoe gave the kid an uncomfortable smile anyway. Because. Well. He.... Did do what was asked?

It was so hard to please everyone. Hogwarts (?) Beaxbatons (?) Hogwarts at Beauxbatons (??) was a very difficult crowd. It's a good thing Schmoe couldn't read minds. He was fidgeting in his blissful ignorance as Anna walked in and took a seat. He was.... slightly concerned about the fact that she couldn't see above the desk, but also he'd probably never make eye contact with her anyway SO IT WAS FINE.

Another one with the weird greeting that he didn't know how to respond to. What do you say to someone who points out the time of day????? "Yeees," he nodded awkwardly. Because that's what he decided to say. Afternoon, indeed?????

The bean bag chairs were his favorite, too. He wasn't surprised to see so many gravitate towards those. "... Good day," yes it was. So far. Hopefully it'd stay that way too because being the first lesson and all...

Schmoe stared too. With profuse blinking. And no greeting in return, he forgot that part.

Finneas continued to check his watch as the flow of incoming students began to lessen. Was it time yet? He was starting to get nervous. Not that he wasn't nervous before... He was pretty much always nervous. Like one of those chihuahuas or something. Another student. Another beanbag selection. Was it time?

It was a very good thing that he knew nothing about the large shoes he had to fill. It would've made Finneas even MORE nervous than he already was. Checking his watch (yet again) he gave the girl a fleeting smile. "Hello," nametents were going to be very useful as he walked the classroom to memorize names and faces. Too bad he didn't know them yet.

Finneas leaned back on his desk, periodically checking his watch as students trickled in. And wouldya look at that?

It's.................................... SCHMOE TIME!

Ha, ha, ha. Ho, ho, ho.

One round of excessive blinking later, Finneas stood up and centered himself at the front of the room. "Welcome to... Muggle Studies," because that's where they were. Was anyone in the wrong classroom? Because now would be the time to... exit. "I'm Professor Schmoe... Unfortunately we do not have a permanent classroom this term... But if you keep an eye on the noticeboard... I will keep you updated... constantly." Yes, well, AnYwAy. He quickly walked back to his desk to set down the Rubik's cube he had been holding and again began to address the class.

"As you may be aware," or may not be aware. There were always the few. "I am new this year... As are all of you in a way. New to this castle, anyway," because they were displaced school to school. Y'know. Well. ANYWAY. "There's a lot to get used to, but especially the new decor. Some of you may like how ... different Beauxbatons looks and others of you may .... well, not." He paused again. "Maybe some of you have even took to redecorating your dormitories or adding little touches to your bed posts." The decorating was also quite evident in some of the name tents.

Not to get too anthropological, but basically... "Humans often have an implicit need for belonging. Comfort. So when moving to a new place redecoration serves a purpose to make things feel homey and like it's ours. Muggles do that too, of course." His eyes bounced around from name-tent to name-tent as he spoke, shifting frequently in his stance.

"As you can guess... wizards approach the task from a different angle..." Because it was easier to redecorate when you had.... magic wands. "Seeing as Muggles cannot exactly charm or transfigure... Where do you think they get their furniture from?" Wild guesses were encouraged. Broad and specific answers were welcome.

OOC: Lesson officially begins NOW. Please refrain from posting late arrivals unless you don't mind dealing with the IC consequences. Otherwise, just pretend like you've been here the whole time ~oooh magic~. I'll move us along in 24+ hours.

Blake finally felt like he would actually know something in a class. Seeing as he was raised with his muggle mother instead of his wizard father he new all there was to being a muggle. He had decided to take this class to get a see from a wizard prospective what muggles where like.

Raising his hand as an automatic gesture. "There are furniture stores you can go and pick out at, or you could use the internet to order them online. Did wizards use the internet???? Blake was truly fascinated now.

Default mentions of phoebe and yoyo and anna here, too! <3
elephant-astic•wanderlust•stay in the ninedaaays the original Taco Belle•look at the flowers✿

Mr. Schmoe was SILLY, did he KNOW? Like him allllmost dropping his colorful cube and then FUMBLING to try and NOT drop it was the funniest and Cecelia cupped a hand over her mouth, ALL giggles. She hoped he was this funny ALL the time.

Resting HER head on Phoebe's head that was on HER shoulder, the Gryffindor smiled, giving her friend a little side squeeze in greeting. Class was ALWAYS better with friends who smelled lovely and were happy to see you. Cece bet Yoyo's hair smelled lovely, TOO, only it was harder to sniff 'cause it was further away. What she said, though..THAT was the truth and the blonde nodded eagerly. "Bet you're right." This WOULD be the best class they'd had so far.

The more Cecelia was attending classes, the MORE Cecelia noticed just how many kids she KINDA knew. Like Anna! She KINDA knew Anna. Their parents were FRIENDS and even though they didn't see each other ALL the time, she BET it meant that her and Anna could be good friends too, probably. She just hadn't had the chance to make it official yet. STILL, she gave the girl a friendly smile because she was friendly and happy to see her, she was.

Hmm...

Muggles apparently got furniture from LOTS of places and Cecelia figured that all those places were good, but she had to think of her OWN answer to offer, too. "What about from stuff they find around the house? Like how you used a bucket for a seat! They could use things in their house that they didn't NEED and use it in a different way by using their imaginations!"

Default Mentions of Eiji too!
curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

Nettie had specifically NOT picked that desk due to the bucket seat, instead settling on a desk with a rather cushy bright blue one, and was a bit surprised that Eiji had willingly sat down there. She didn't quite notice her friend at first, though, because Schmoe looked like he was going to greet her in return...

Or, not.

The professor just...stared at her. Like he had forgotten what he was going to say. That was...interesting. And new. She'd never rendered a professor speechless before. Perhaps he didn't know how to address the prefects? Just like any other student, she would suspect, but maybe he felt...pressured? Put on the spot? Or maybe he was just...zoning out?

Also, she was quite certain this professor could NOT be any older than her oldest brother Royland. It was a weird feeling for her to wrap her head around. Royland hardly seemed mature enough to be a professor.

She smirked at Eiji, and then leaned in to whisper to him as Schmoe continued his greetings. "Honestly I'm not even sure he'd notice," she told him with a small grin. She felt a little bad for teasing the professor like that but...he was just so odd.

As he began, she focused back in on his lesson and paid attention to the introduction to the lesson. How did muggles get furniture? She almost snorted when she heard Carsyn say the store, because that had been her initial answer as well. Where else would they go?

Actually, the more she thought about it, the more she realized there were a LOT of places muggles could go to get furniture. So, she raised her hand. "I've heard something about some site where people post ads for furniture they're selling, and then you go pick it up and pay them. It's kind of shady, but a great way to get furniture if you're broke," she explained.

Honestly for someone with the last name Schmoe. She should not be judging any names what so ever that included Snozz also. Because Eloise laughed learning his name also. Anyways, Ms. Soul also worked because sounded like he said Missile which is still funny but not as funny. And does he always hold a Rubik's cube? Honestly, Drewie would get along with this guy.

Ok, some of the answers were amusing and it was 2099. furniture wasnt hard to get at all. all it took was getting on your phone and having some money.

"Furniture Fairy, Pro Schmoe. Either that or just use your phone and pay to have some guys deliver it to your place"

Wasnt that complicated.

Who Am I? Ern's 2460FUN

Home décor? Alessandro was surprised by the topic for the lesson. First Herbology, with gardening, and now this? Were they, as the Hogwarts contingency, going to be refurbishing the entirety of Beauxbatons castle? It felt a little bit like that....

So, Alessandro offered an answer that required no work on his end, just in case it was suggested he should become some kind of caretaker. "Muggles hire people to design their spaces and fill it with things." Alessandro paused. Then, clarified. "An interior designer." There were magical interior designers, too.

Bed posts, huh? Did this Schmoe guy really need to mention beds? And comfort? Kaiser was exhausted, and the temptation to curl up - not unlike a cat - on this cushion he was sat on was very real. He shifted slightly, blinked very hard for a moment (something he would probably blame on Schmoe too) and tried to focus.

Okay, um... where to get furniture? WELL. Mr. Kaiser over here had a little experience in the matter. He raised his hand halfway into the air and spoke.

"They can just take it." Steal it essentially, yes, but in this context Kaiser wouldn't have considered it to be illegal, so he avoided that term. "Sometimes people throw old furniture away that they do not want. They leave it outside, or in those... the big... uh..." The English was escaping him again. "The big metal boxes for rubbish, yes?" Yes????? Schmoe would understand, surely. "You can just take it. It is good to use and you do not have to pay for it." Honestly, you wouldn't believe the kind of perfectly good stuff you could find, just thrown away. It was perfectly possible to live without money in that sense.

Not... not that Kaiser knew.

Uh... hm. Lack of sleep really did totally do away with his filter, didn't it?

Shutting up now.

Default I love this class :D
Professor Pink | Mrs. Bruce Wayne | I'm on a Goat | Glitterpuff | Dumbledore's Defense Squad | BHB

Bernadette was still slumped at her high-top barstool, looking around at all these wizard children like they were nutters. She did snort, loudly, at the answer of Furniture Fairy. Didn't they have furniture stores? Surely not EVERYTHING here was held together by magic, right? In fact, was this barstool held together by magic? What if she were actually sitting on, like, a spiky cactus or something?!

Bernadette's bum twitched and she nearly fell off her stool imagining the sensation of a pokey cactus. She caught herself on the edge of her desk, however, and quickly balanced her stool upright.

"Dead people," was all she said, with her hand raised. On second thought, maybe she could be more specific... that was KIND OF an ominous answer... "I mean..... estate sales and auctions, y'know. That's where you get the best antiques."

Duh.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine had tried not to stare at Schmoe. His grin had thrown her off and it came off as somewhat creepy. Maybe she should stay as far away from him as possible On the other hand, it was interesting to watch him with the cube. As other students arrived, Claudine set up her instruments for the lesson. Since she had been very early to the lesson, out came her sketch pad. While at lunch, she had been working on a drawing of a strange French dish prepared for lunch. With her pencil, she added some highlights to make the drawing pop and be more eye catching.

^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^

No permanent classroom? As Claudine flipped her sketch pad close, she felt a small wave of anger flash through her. It was very tiresome, this Beauxbatons Castle. She wanted Hogwarts where the Slytherins would have an actual common room and there would be permanent classrooms. Her notebook was flipped open, the pencil poised to make notes. Then came the first question and she had to stop to think before her hand went up. “From other people," was her short reply when she was called upon.

Redecorating the dormitories? Now that was something Avalon might want to look into doing. The Ombrelune dormitories were....fine....but nothing like the ones at Hogwarts. And since she was having so much trouble sleeping lately, maybe some decorations from her room at home would help her feel more at ease. She made a mental note to talk to her fellow Claws about it later.

And it seemed they would be talking about furniture today. Seemed fitting, taking into account all the odd chairs in the room. She had heard of a few different ways that Muggles acquired furniture, one being that weird Intra-net thing. Apparently you just had to click a few buttons on this weird machine, and a few days later, a truck would show up to your house with stuff. It was quite fascinating. She raised her hand, trying to think of a unique answer. "I know there are some Muggle stores that sell one specific item, like mattresses. It's just like this giant room filled with mattresses to buy!" Very strange indeed. However, she supposed Muggles might think the same strange thoughts if they knew that Wizards went to stores that only sold magic wands.

Phoebe had to struggle to get back into her beanbag and get her cuddle back on with Cece. Roommate Cece. The chair was a little squishy for learning purposes. But she did know the answer to this question, even though she didn't personally know any Muggles up close and personal. The answer, though? Her hand shot up and Phoebe wiggled her fingers at professor.

"The attic, sir. They find furniture in their attic. It mysteriously gives birth to uncomfortable chairs and plaid sofas."

Comfort? Belonging? Homey?!

Lucas’s eyes widened the more Schmoe spoke. The man was saying that everyone felt like that, that everyone - Muggle or magical - wanted to make a space feel like it was theirs. But part of him felt like the man was talking to him directly. It was all about comfort. It was why he liked the Astronomy tower so much and why he hated this dorm sharing and this new castle.

But he couldn’t have known, right?

Right. Question.

Where do Muggles get their furniture from? A lot of people were giving a lot of good answers already, some he wouldn’t have immediately thought of. And some he would’ve never thought of. Did someone mention - what he thought was - stealing?? Lucas stared at the desk on his lap in disbelief, but it wasn’t until someone else mentioned dead people that his eyebrows shot right up.

Yeaaaaaah, he wasn’t going to add to that.

Default replying to Avalon and Phoebe
you wanna fite? | 💚 nickleback 💚 | Uh, anyway.

What a weird question, Yoyo had never even considered the possibility that Muggles did furniture differently, but it made sense- a lot of sense because almost everything Muggles and Wizards did happened differently.

Traveling.
Cooking.
Learning.
Even writing, Muggles didn't write with pens and papers, they used compooters and stuff.

Yoyo plopped back into her bean bag, getting extra cozy as she stared up at the ceiling, listening to her classmates as they all answered, one after the other. "There are stores that just sell mattresses?" She asked aloud, surprised by a Ravenclaw Second-Year's answer. "... Muggles are so funny... I wonder if people take naps there." Yoyo giggled, amusing herself as she pictured Muggle Clerks getting cozied up for a store-wide naptime.

And then Phoebe spoke and Yoyo's mind was further split right open. "But how do they make the attics spit out the furniture like that without magic? Is it Techno?" Yoyo glanced over at her friend, curious to hear the answer regardless of whether Phoebe was right or wrong.

The Hufflepuff, herself, had no reply to shout out. She was much happier listening and chiming in, thanks!

What??

Some of these answers were not sitting well with Gemma. Getting things from dead people?? That's bad energy. Why would anyone want something like that in their home? And stealing? Maybe if it was left out and no one wanted it but what?

Muggles were so fascinating. They did some weird things. This question was really making her think.

Oh!

Finally she thought of an answer and raised her hand. "Muggles have this one store that sells a bunch of furniture. But they have to put it together by hand..." She paused. "The store also sells food there. Like cooked food." Quite a weird concept for a place.

...what was that smile for? Eiji did not return the professors pained look but instead straightened his tent so that it was perfectly parallel to his parchment...and then finally had a look around and noticed that he was the only one who had actually folded a tent. Literally.

.....his was the best by default then.

Smirking just a little at Trinetta's response, he leaned over just a bit more to whisper to her since the professor seemed to be getting started. "If I get in trouble, I'm telling him you encouraged me." Just sayin.

The subject was already proving to be too touchy feely for his liking, but he knew Rebecca was likely eating all this up and eagerly so. She had been going on and on about adding personal touching to things here at Beauxbatons and sharing in creativity with with their co-residents and each other. Eiji, on the other hand, preferred to not make waves. The only thing slightly bothering him was the need for thicker curtains in the Slytherin's broom cupboard and more space between the beds in the dorms. But...nothing he couldn't endure for a year. Hopefully only a year.

His wand out, Eiji backed off his bucket a bit and remained squatted so as not to draw too much attention to his movements. There were plenty of raised hands to go around at the moment anyway and he had waited for Trinetta to say her piece before strategically beginning to take care of his bum. With Professor S'more's attention elsewhere, Eiji whispered the incantation to the Cushioning Charm and quickly pocketed his wand once the little burst of light had done its duty.

Ah, his bum felt loads better already.

Though the Slytherin had no answer he wished to give to this question. Not one that was serious at least. Offering up 'the stroke brought them' was too facetious even for the fifth year at the moment. He was more curious where the professor had bothered to do his shopping.

...or dumpster diving if what Kaiser said had any validity.

Though this all was rather unsettling to the fifth year. Was Beauxbatons using Professor S'more and them as free labor for redecorating? He knew his mum had been rumored to be part house elf during her hay day at Hogwarts...but not this fellow here. No thanks.

Though if they were going to actually do some construction, which were some things that had been mentioned by others, then he could get behind that. THAT actually sounded appealing rather then fung shui-ing Beauxbatons.

Alexandre had decided that this new guy was weird. BUT, but, that wasn't a bad thing of course. He also decided in the same instant that he quite liked him. He was fun. He just said things that were kind of silly. Maybe it was first day nerves? Alexandre didn't think professors had those. They always seemed like they knew what they were doing all of the time. But you never knew.

He thought this question was silly too. Where did muggles get furniture? He raised his hand. "You could get furniture from someone else. Like if your friend has something they don't want anymore." Muggles could get furniture that way, but wizards could get furniture that way too. He thought that a lot of the things mentioned weren't necessarily specific to muggles.

By now, Analiese was sort of getting used to the weird decor of the room. And now where did Muggles get furniture? "Some people build it on their own, sir. They use different bits and bobs that they have already. I think it's called DIY.", she answered. She then tried to make her so-called 'name tent' into an actual name tent. Right now it was just a piece of paper with her name on it. So you folded like that, then this way... Or was it the the other way? Finally she managed to make a messy name tent.

Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Tina had just finished decorating her name tent when Professor Schmoe spoke. She looked up, laying down the pencil she was using, and prepared to listen. The parts about the noticeboard and not having a permanent classroom were hardly news to her, but when he said they all were new this year, she blinked. Technically that wasn't true... she'd attended Beauxbatons for four years before she came to Hogwarts, so she knew more or less what to expect. But there was no way the professor could've known that, and Tina was too polite to point it out and embarrass him. Was it just her or did he seem a bit nervous?

She almost laughed when Schmoe mentioned the difference between decor at Hogwarts and Beauxbatons. Oh, she had definitely noticed! The decor was just one of a long list of things she disliked about Hogwarts. Depending on the area, it went to one of two extremes, either too drab or too over the top, but there was no accounting for taste. So... they were talking about redecorating and furniture. Well, that would explain the mishmash of furniture. Tina considered the question. Things like furniture stores, websites, auctions, yard sales, and inheritances came to mind, but all of those had already been said and she was not about to repeat answers.

Tina absentmindedly tugged at the sleeve of her robe as she thought. Stupid robe! The sleeves were way too short... but she supposed that's what happens when almost everything you own comes from secondhand shops. Wait... that was it! Tina's hand shot up, and she said, "Secondhand shops, sir. Some of them sell gently used furniture, and they're usually cheaper than buying new."

Abra had really been looking forward to Muggle Studies, where she didn't have to take her wand at all. Well, it was safely tucked into the very bottom of her bag. What did she care if it got broken in there? She wanted to go back home to the MUGGLE world she had left, and only needing to use her wand for the rare occasion. Alas, here she was. But in the Muggle Studies classroom with this Professor that seemed a bit fun.

Thinking about furniture, again the first year didn't really have anything to add to what other people were saying. Nevertheless she raised her hand to give something. "Y-yes, people can make furniture. Out of wood sometimes, and then they can also reupholster furniture to make it look new, out of old things."

Was Professor Schmoe about to spazz out on them? It certainly seemed like it. That was....worrisome in a professor. Another thing: had someone just mentioned dumpster diving as a good way to get new furniture? Ew, no. Just no. Dalia's mouth was agape at that suggestion. Gross. Anyway, closing her mouth and moving on.

"I thought the Amazon was a rain forest in South America....?" She was right, she was sure. Like, it was a thing that everyone knew. Or so she had thought. Of course, that didn't relate to the professor's question. Oops, oh well.

Breathe. Think about the beautiful french and spanish boys. Think about ... okay neither of her British crushes were here, but lesson. Focus. Mature. Slipping onto a beanbag chair near Carys she decided she could definitely go for that nap right about now. But first. Name tent. And no, she wasn't skilled enough to do some origami tent like Eiji, because EFFORT. And yea, no thanks.

Instead, a simple folded paper and a simple name scribble for the Gryffindor.

"C. Rose"

Or rather, crossing it out, Carsyn figured she ought to include her first name cause yea.

"Carsyn"

Where did muggles get their furniture from? "The store?" Okay, that was probably obvious.

Well................. "Yes," because........ technically, yes. Muggles did have furniture stores. Though he was hoping his students would be a little more specific than this. And so he just stared at her for a moment, blinking profusely. Before walking over to the chalkboard and grabbing a piece of chalk.

Moving on. His eyes moved to the next raised hand and then to her name tent. "Excellent!" He raised his finger in the air in exclamation, before turning to the board to write down her answer. Chalk did not make a pleasant sound. "Yard sales are an excellent place to find used peices at a discount price."

And her hand could be seen when she raised it. Which, she did. “Some muggles make furniture. Out of wood and tools and stuff.” Seemed like a lot of work to her, but maybe it was a pride thing. Or a boredom thing.

And there was another hand! Most probably belonging to a student, but with the way her desk was no one could really be too sure. "True!" Again, he turned to jot down her answer on the board. "This is far more time consuming, but it is sustainable!"

He didn't like the first class after lunch, those we're always destined to be horrible since he usually ate too much food and got sleepy in them. Hoping the topic of the lesson would keep his interest up Cole hadn't exactly betted that they'd be talking about furniture of all things. Raising his hand he supplied. "I um have heard that muggles like to buy their furniture from a big department store called IKeeeeeeeeeeeeeeA or something similiar." Oops hopefully he hadn't sounded too loud when he said that.

"IKEA!" YES, YES, YES! Excellent, excellent. "Ikea is a store specializing in selling furniture of all kinds. There are over 422 stores all over the world." Facts! "Excellent...... Cole," thank you, name tent.

"Amazon, yes," he nodded before turning to the rest of the class. "Amazon is an online market that sells many, many items. Furniture, included." Yes. Chalkboard.

He appreciated the creativity. "If you can receive items from your friends, then you are very lucky," Schmoe smiled, looking just passed the boy. Free things were always better than expensive things. Science.

Raising his hand as an automatic gesture. "There are furniture stores you can go and pick out at, or you could use the internet to order them online. Did wizards use the internet???? Blake was truly fascinated now.

Fidgeting with his sweater vest, Schmoe continued to call on raised hands. "The INTERNET!" Honestly, it was the right answer for most questions in the class. Can't ever go wrong. "Excellent, excellent!" They'd talk about this some more.

Schmoe particularly liked this answer because she used context clues, in a sense. It showed great potential. "Innovation!" He nodded, looking down at a spot right in front of Cecelia instead of at her. "The greatest discovery of mankind."

"The world-wide-web provides many useful tools!" He nodded along as she answered. "Online market places did simplify the process of selling and buying your used furniture." But yes, sometimes shady. "There are many examples of these websites: Ebay, Craigslist, a subsection of Facebook, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera!" He turned to jot something down on the blackboard. "You won't have to have their specific names memorized for the exam!" He was a fairly reasonable man, okay?

Ok, some of the answers were amusing and it was 2099. furniture wasnt hard to get at all. all it took was getting on your phone and having some money.

"Furniture Fairy, Pro Schmoe. Either that or just use your phone and pay to have some guys deliver it to your place"

Wasnt that complicated.

.................................................. . Uh.

Finneas stared blankly into the abyss for a moment. Blinking profusely and wondering where he could have possibly gone wrong. "Well..... your imagine is... vast..... But..... Furniture fairies..... I have never heard of........" He fidgeted with his sweater-vest in attempt to NOT have to look her in the eyes. "Delivery services, however, are indeed quite helpful for muggles." AnYwAy.

"Muggles hire people to design their spaces and fill it with things." Alessandro paused. Then, clarified. "An interior designer." There were magical interior designers, too.

Turning away from the chalkboard, Finneas looked for the next raised hand. "Excellent! Some muggles dedicate entire careers to refurnishing spaces. They are amongst the most qualified." It was a good thing Finneas wasn't an interior designer. Ha ha ha ha. His classroom was a real eyesore.

Okay, um... where to get furniture? WELL.

Shutting up now.

........................... Well. He wasn't wrong? Schmoe took longer than needed before responding to Kaiser, as he wasn't keen on encouraging this method.... But also......... Uh. "Yes," it was a reluctant yes. "Sometimes people leave their unwanted furniture along the street or in a large wastebin, a skip, a dumpster... Though furniture quality could diminish the longer it remains outside... So.... Discretion." Discretion. Yes.

Duh.

Was it just Schmoe or were the answers getting darker and darker?

...... "Well..." Uh. "Yes, good point." Anyway, anyway, ANYWAY. Moving forward.

Yes, well, Finneas had no idea that he was giving Claudine the creeps, so he did nothing to stop it. "............ Yes," was his short reply back. Someone else had mentioned this earlier. But... he... er.... did not want to point that out. It was their first class. Maybe she'd improve.

"Specialty stores," YES. Good. Excellent. WONDERFUL. He nodded. "If you know exactly what you want, then a specialty store is a great place to start. Especially if you need to shop for one particular piece." They had them for mattresses, lamps, ETCETERA, ETCETERA, ETCETERA!

"The attic, sir. They find furniture in their attic. It mysteriously gives birth to uncomfortable chairs and plaid sofas."

Well........ Phoebe was not wrong.

Actually, no, yeah, she was very wrong. Finneas took a moment to blink, considering all the ways he could gently let her down. Though in that time, Yoyo chimed in with a question... Which meant he had to address the issue because, well, yeah. If everyone went and told Trent that attics spat out furniture, then Finneas would be spat out of Beauxbatons.

"Well.... Uh...." He adjusted his bowtie. "Attics do not spit out furniture." He paused. "But I can see why you would think that... Sometimes muggles store unwanted or old furniture in their attics and...... yes." Yes. That would be all. This was mildly uncomfortable. ANYWAY.

Comfort? Belonging?

The way Lucas looked was ultimately the way Schmoe felt. Standing up and talking to a room full of teens and tweens was far more intimidating than it looked. He briefly paused when his eyes fell on Lucas' tent, but didn't press.

Again, Finneas shot his finger into the air. "IKEA!" Times two. "Hold on to that," her answer. Because it'd come back.

.....his was the best by default then.

Fortunately, Finneas hadn't been looking when Eiji cast his spell... But he did catch a glimpse of light from the corner of his eye. Er.... Only he didn't see where it came from exactly, so he turned to address the WHOLE class. "No magic!" Anyway, anyway, aNYWAY. He really needed a way to solidify his authority here.

Finneas was slightly flustered by the magic situation, but did continue to call upon raised hands with some mild skepticism. "An easy way to furnish without breaking the bank," he nodded for a little longer than necessary before turning to the board.

Right now it was just a piece of paper with her name on it. So you folded like that, then this way... Or was it the the other way? Finally she managed to make a messy name tent.

"DIY-- Do it yourself," he smiled. "A big trend in the muggle community," he had done some DIYs in his day. Though, they never turned out as good as the vloggers were able to produce them. Hm.

"Excellent!" he grinned. You know, this teaching thing wasn't that intimidating. "Second hand stores, consignment shops, the whole shabang! Excellent places to find gently used items at a discounted price," he nodded.

"Refurbishing old furniture is an excellent way to revamp a space without having to spend loads of money," that's what he did when he moved from flat to flat. "A bit of paint goes a long way!" Excellent, he turned to jot this remark down on the board as well.

ERrrrrrrr. He had chalk dust all over his hands.... So he was just going to.... Rub that off..... On his trousers........... Uh.......... Yes.

Right, well, the Schmoe must go on.

"Excellent, truly excellent," he was VERY pleasantly surprised not gonna lie. Aside from the one or two odd ones (furniture fairy... really??), everyone had made an effort at least. "So now that we have some basic understandings of where a muggle may go to find their furniture, I'd like us to consider some..... more practical aspects of the furniture hunt which can often be stressful and tedious." Not always. But sometimes.

"Some of you touched upon this question already, but I'd like for us all to brainstorm deeper. What is important for a muggle to take into consideration when browsing for furniture and for furnishing the space itself?" He expected the answers would very much vary dependent upon what a person may individually find important. "And in what ways can these considerations be unique to muggles?"

OOC: omg y'all make my heart SOAR, thank you for participating this is a blaaaaaast. Feel free to answer one or BOTH of the questions. I'll post to move us along to the mini-activity in about 24 hours!
