History of Magic Lesson One - Wizarding Inventions
The chilly December air had taken to entering the castle, making the rooms rather drafty. Professor Newton didn't mind the cold so much but didn't want her students to feel uncomfortable, so she cast heating charms. Hopefully no one would doze off during the lesson because she always hates docking points.
The seating arrangement is as usual: groups of desks scattered around the room, all in groups of four. Students are welcome to sit wherever they want to though Professor Newton is free to move students around if they are disrupting the lesson and not getting any work done.
A bowl of Chocolate Frogs sits on her desk and anyone is welcome to take one or several. The Professor herself is standing by the blackboard up front and waiting for people to start arriving.
OOC: Welcome to the first History of Magic lesson! While this is the first class that we are RPing, keep in mind that this is NOT the first lesson of term. I hope you all have read the class rules. Next post will be in approximately 24 hours. Some talking is okay, but PLEASE keep socializing to a minimum.CLASS HAS OFFICIALLY STARTED.
Watching the doorway, Rosalyn smiled as the first student entered the classroom. "Hello, Mr Bellaire." It was hard not to notice that the boy seemed less than enthused about being here but fortunately for him this lesson was not going to be too heavy on the content. She was going to give their brains a bit of a rest since the holidays were fast approaching. Also neat quill.
SPOILER!!: Azura :)
Aah, there was Ms Snow. Always a delightful student because she was polite and eager to learn. That was something that Rosalyn liked to see though she did not believe in playing favourites; she valued all students equally. "Hello, Ms Snow. I am doing quite well, thank you. I hope you are too." Despite how cold the castle was lately that is. At least she had remedied the problem as far as her classroom was concerned...
SPOILER!!: Brooklyn :)
The small smile was nice to see, and Rosalyn returned the gesture. "Hello, Ms Andrews." She too declined on taking any Chocolate Frogs and that was alright as they were available throughout the lesson so long as the students didn't get up to grab them while she was in the middle of talking. They would know better than that by now anyway, especially the older ones.
SPOILER!!: Jace :)
"Nice to see you, Mr Reed," Rosalyn said as she returned the bow. That was different than what she was generally used to but she liked it. She knew a little about Japanese culture and found it utterly fascinating. As he went to sit by Azura, Rosalyn turned her attention back to the door for when more students arrived.
SPOILER!!: Jasper :)
It was obvious to see that Mr Quinn was feeling the cold despite the fact that there had been heating spells put in place. "Hello," she said as she watched the boy shiver away. "Would you like me to make the class even warmer?" Some people really disliked the cold and she didn't want any of her students to be freezing.
SPOILER!!: Geneva :)
Enthusiasm! Now that was what she liked seeing from her students. Rosalyn returned the wide smile. "Hello, Ms Tate." Hopefully the enthusiasm would stay throughout the lesson and no one would fall asleep because that was something that just didn't not go over well in her classroom.
SPOILER!!: Owen :)
With an eyebrow raise, Rosalyn watched as Mr Montezor entered her classroom with none of the cheerfulness that Hufflepuff was known for. At least he managed to give her a greeting despite his mood. That was something always appreciated. "Hello, Mr Montezor, she said as she returned the bow. Should she ask what was wrong? Hopefully the Chocolate Frog would help at least a little.
SPOILER!!: Dalton :)
The next students seemed to be in a better mood which was nice to see. And he was thanking her for the Chocolate Frog, which made her smile. "Hello, Mr Fletcher. You are very welcome." Fortunately he took the beanie off of his head before she could tell him to. Even though it was rather cold around the castle, there WAS a dress code and heating charms in place.
SPOILER!!: Tenacius :)
Another cheerful student! "Hello, Mr Salander." Rosalyn said as she watched the boy take a few of the Chocolate Frogs. He was more than welcome to take as many as he wanted since she had charmed the bowl to keep refilling itself. Wasn't magic just one of the most amazing things ever? She didn't know what she would do without it.
SPOILER!!: Paige :)
The next student bypassed the Chocolate Frogs entirely but had a smile on her face though it DID seem to be a little forced. Seemed that the cold was getting to most of the students though they would be feeling much better soon enough. "Good to see you, Ms Skeeter." It was a joy to see all of her students even though some of them definitely didn't seem to share her enthusiasm for history. Oh well.
SPOILER!!: Natalia :)
Soon after another student had arrived. "Hello there, Franks-Mundie," Rosalyn said as she returned the girl's smile. She watched as it took a moment for her to find a place to sit but it didn't take too long for her to be situated by Mt Fletcher. Good since they were going to be starting soon. Almost time to close the door.
SPOILER!!: Henry :)
"Hello, Mr Whittebrook," Rosalyn said as she smiled back at the boy. He was also being polite and thanking her for the chocolate. "You are very welcome." While a lot of Professors didn't seem to like students eating in their lessons, she found that it wasn't a problem so long as they made sure not to make a mess.
SPOILER!!: Kitty :)
The first Prefect had arrived. "Good morning, Ms Valentine." Rosalyn was glad to see that she removed the hood off of her head before taking one of the Chocolate Frogs. "You are very welcome." After giving the girl a smile, she returned her attention back to the door.
SPOILER!!: Oliver :)
"Hello, Mr Thomas-Borzekowski," Rosalyn said as she watched the boy step inside the classroom. She returned the smile and was glad to see that he helped himself to one of the Chocolate Frogs before heading over to one of the desks. Honestly she was starting to feel tempted to take one for herself but sadly it would have to wait until class was over.
SPOILER!!: Leesha :)
"Hello, Ms Griffel," Rosalyn said as she watched the girl eye the bowl of Chocolate Frogs hungrily before taking one. "You are very welcome." There were a lot more where that came from, but the girl ws already heading over to one of the free desks. It was nice to see that she wasn't the only one with a soft spot for the chocolates.
SPOILER!!: Bentley :)
And there was the other Bellaire. "Good to see you, Mr Bellaire-Moore." Rosalyn watched as he took a seat beside his cousin. No surprise since they always sat together. No harm in that. She didn't believe that seating plans were necessary and liked to allow people the choice to sit wherever they wanted to. So long as they didn't talk when she was in the middle of teaching.
SPOILER!!: Charlotte
The next student to enter made a beeline towards her friends without saying hello. That was something that Rosalyn was not a huge fan of though she wasn't going to give punishments for it. Just was common courtesy. Anyway she wanted to know where the Chocolate Frogs were. "Hello, Ms Kettleburn. You can get the chocolate from the bowl on my desk."
SPOILER!!: Dora :)
Hearing that sigh almost made Rosalyn laugh. It was nice to see how much her warming spells were appreciated by the students. She thought it was incredible how even with all the magic that happened around Hogwarts the castle was always cold in the winter unless spells were used. "Hello, Ms Umbridge," she said in reply as she watched the girl find a seat.
SPOILER!!: Chloe
Here was another student who entered the classroom without so much as acknowledging her presence. Rosalyn had a bit of difficulty holding her tongue. "Hello, Ms Newman." Glancing at her watch, she saw that it was almost time to close the classroom door. Anyone to come after that would lose points.
SPOILER!!: Jonas :)
"Hello, Mr Emery," Rosalyn said as she flashed the boy a smile. He was one who seemed to rather enjoy history and hopefully he would enjoy what they would be doing for today's lesson. Laid back was rather nice and there was no way that she was going to make her students' brains hurt so close to Christmas.
SPOILER!!: Katerina :)
And there was Ms Delgado. "Hello, Ms Delgado." Rosalyn gave the girl a smile. The girl opted for two Chocolate Frogs before heading over to one of the empty groups of desks. It seemed that her classroom was filling up rather quickly and most of the tables were filled already. Good. Very good.
SPOILER!!: Olivia :)
Seeing Ms Phillips entering the room without any enthusiasm was rather strange to Rosalyn. Seemed that the girl wasn't in a good mood today. No greeting from this one. Instead she had made a beeline towards Ms Newman. "Hello, Ms Phillips." Great timing because the lesson would be starting in a few minutes after the rest of her students trickled in.
SPOILER!!: Kimi :)
"Hello, Mr Kovalainen," Rosalyn said as she watched the First Year enter the classroom and take a seat in one of the empty tables. Seemed that he wasn't feeling very hungry either as he had also opted out of taking a Chocolate Frog.
SPOILER!!: Takeru
The split lip and bruised face didn't go unnoticed and Rosalyn resisted the urge to raise her brow. Clearly there had been a fight. Not something that she condoned but it seemed that he was doing okay. If anything was seriously bad he would make a trip to the Hospital Ward to see Joy. "Hello, Mr Asakura," she said while noticing that he took a few Chocolate Frogs without giving a greeting. If this continued much longer she would be saying something.
SPOILER!!: Cassandra
And there was Ms McNally. "Good day to you too, Ms McNally," Rosalyn said with a smile. She watched as the girl looked around the classroom looking for a place to sit before heading over to join Ms Phillips and Ms Newman.
SPOILER!!: Colt :)
"Hello, Mr Winchester," Rosalyn said before laughing at what he told her about the candy selection. "I might have some of those for a future lesson," she said knowing full well that he was only teasing her. Nice to see students with a good sense of humor. She smiled as she watched him take two Chocolate Frogs before finding a seat.
SPOILER!!: Noelle :)
Another student who abstained from giving a greeting. Rosalyn had just about reached her limit as far as this was concerned. The next person to walk in without displaying courtesy would earn the class a lecture on such things and she did NOT like giving lectures. "Hello, Ms Summers," she said as the girl took a seat by Ms Delgado.
SPOILER!!: Katherine :)
"Hello, Ms Toussaint. You are very welcome." Rosalyn said in reply to the greeting as the girl took a couple Chocolate Frogs. She glanced at her watch to see what time it was. In one minute she would be starting so this was excellent timing.
SPOILER!!: Juliette :)
The next arrival seemed to be rather short of breath. Clearly she had ran all the way to the classroom. "Hello, Ms McDean," she said with a smile as she watched the girl make her way over to one of the empty seats. Only a few more spots were left to be filled by this time.
SPOILER!!: Bradson :)
Rosalyn was about to head towards the door when another student had arrived. "Excellent timing, Mr Somerhalder," she said while noticing that he had also declined from giving her a greeting, instead looking around the room. "Just sit anywhere," she told the boy. Lesson was about to start in a second.
SPOILER!!: Juno :)
"Hello, Ms Darcy," Rosalyn said as the Hufflepuff Prefect followed immediately after Mr Somerhalder. Seemed that someone really liked Chocolate Frogs. "You are very welcome," she said with a smile before heading over to the door and closing it. Anyone who arrived after this point was going to lose points.
Heading back towards the blackboard, she glanced around the room at all the students. "Before I start the lesson, I have something to say. I noticed that a few of you entered the classroom and made a beeline towards a place to sit without so much as acknowledging my presence. That is not something that I like seeing and expect not to in the future." Was that something that they all understood? All that she was asking for was some courtesy. If this happened again in the future she WOULD be a lot more severe about it.
Anyway with that addressed it was time for them to start the lesson.
"As the Christmas holidays are fast approaching I have decided that this lesson will not be too heavy historical content." They would be expected to pay attention, however, and take notes of anything that was important. Just because they were having a lighter lesson did not mean that there was going to be no work to complete. If that was the case, she might as well cancel lessons all together and there was no way that was about to happen.
Four images of enlarged Chocolate frog cards were added to the board. "Here are fourfamoushistoricalfigures. I would like to start off by having everyone list ONE fact about any of them even if it is something as small as the year that they were born in. No more than one figure per person please." It was just good to get some idea of how well they knew some of the great minds from Wizarding history. All four people had something in common and that was going to be the focus of today's lesson.
OOC: Class has officially started! Please note that anyone who posts entering the classroom after this point WILL receive IC consequences. To avoid that, it is best to pretend that you have been here all along. Lesson will continue in roughly 24 hours.
Alright. Finally getting here on time, Jonas was able to find a great seat. Let's see....something that hasn't been said before.....oh! Raising his hand and speaking....
"Ignatius was in Ravenclaw house," he pointed out.
He looked on his desk and frowned. He looked up and noticed that there was a bowl of chocolate frogs at the teacher's desk. Oh well. Jonas mentally shrugged. He would get one after class.
Puff by day, snake by night | Mj's bestie | Always UP to Something...
Nat watched as the other students started coming in. To late noticing the chocolate frogs at the front. Maybe she could slip up and get one before class, but just then someone was standing near her. "Oh sure Colt." So this section was for the Slytherin Sixth years, hmm where was Kelly? Her eyes scanned the room for her bestie.
The class was getting started and she never got up to get a chocolate frog, sad. Opening her notebook and pulling out her quill she listened as the professor talked about the Holidays and the content they would be doing. Her eyes scanning the pictures and she flipped open her book. Everyone seemed to be going for the easier ones, but she knew she had heard about the first picture or seen it during her studying last term for OWLs.
Raising her hand she waited her turn, "Professor the first one is Perpetua Fancourt. She is credited for inventing the lunascope." Yes she was reading that from her book and yes she didn't know if they were suppose to know right off hand the fact that they were to tell, but at least she gave an answer.

Blaise just sat there side eyeing his cousin for a hot minute. What did he mean they knew how to get him custom stuff? What did he mean they would? With an exaggerated roll of his eyes he turned his attention once again to Tenacious. "It's brilliantly entertaining. I try not to go anywhere without it." And he would leave it at that before turning to face the Professor.
Soon the castle would be overrun with quills. Sweet Merlin.
Shaking the thought from his head, the Fourth Year looked to the cards placed before them. One fact about any of them? He was happy enough hearing it wouldn't be a heavy class.
"Wildsmith also went to Hogwarts in her younger years where she was sorted into Ravenclaw." He remembered when he used to religiously collect and read through those cards. Trading had been a real thing too but not so much anymore.
Now he preferred jelly slugs and simply didn't have the same interest.

Pretty much all hope for him paying much attention in a class that already had so little of it was quickly going out the window now, and Henry gave Char a wide smile as she joined them next. Maybe he really should give some serious thought about a Quick Quotes Quill taking notes for him.
"Hi, Char!" He glanced down at his chocolate frog that he hadn't quite completely opened yet and slid it over to her. "There's some up on Professor Newton's desk, but you can have mine if you want." He could go get some more to share with the whole table.
"Oh, you're sweet. Thanks Henry." She laughed lightly and looked up at the professor's desk. She totally hadn't noticed, she'd just seen her friends and came over all eager to get to sit with them.

"Oh!" Charlotte blushed a little. "I'm sorry, professor. I didn't see you." Selective attention span okay? She truly hadn't meant it, and at least she hadn't taken chocolate without saying hi, right?
But now it was time to answer a question. Oh she knew BOTT because family. And Perpetua Fancourt because astronomy was a bit of a thing in her family.
She stuck her hand up. "Perpetua Fancourt created a device that you can use instead of moon charts for when you are studying lunar phases and stuff!"

Azura smiled over at Jace as he spoke and she gently placed a hand on his am and squeezed it before she turned back to the Professor with a smile on her face. She was eagerly awaiting what would happen this lesson and she titled her head as she looked at the cards..
A few people had already mentioned that Perpetua Fancourt invented the lunascope.. But they hadn't mentioned one thing.. Her hand went into the air as she stated her fact. " Perpetua Fancourt went to Hogwarts in the early 1900's and she was sorted into Ravenclaw. " She said with a smile.
Chloe did see her but she didn't appreciate the fact that she was basically chastised for not saying hello. Now the Ravenclaw was going to make a point of not giving a greeting every time she walked into class from here on out. Hmmph.
She shot Livvy a look that said they'd talk later. Like after class or something.
The blonde was actually so miffed she didn't raise her hand to answer the question. She knew quite a bit about each figure, she was a book eater, but she didn't wanna say anything. Her bad mood had doubled.
Napoleon of Crime - Gryffinclaw - ❄ Lunar Library Lurker ❄ - Owl Emissary - Pirate Auror
Well she had acknowledged the professor’s presence, the woman even returning the greeting so Cassie knew she was off the hook. But she didn’t seem to be too harsh on them, just reminding those who hadn’t to do so in the future. Really, how hard was it to be polite and greet those you come to see?
Regardless, the lesson was beginning and the Ravenclaw focused her attention on that. Thank Merlin for the blessing of things not being too heavy. Cass liked reading and learning as much as the next eagle but somethings were just two intense at times. The addition of the pictures from chocolate frog cards certainly gave it a sweet treat feel, especially the one about Bertie Bott. But he had been talked on already as had two of the others so she picked the last.
“Glover Hipworth invented the pepper-up potion…the cure for the common cold,” she offered after raising ger hand. She had certainly taken it enough times growing up to know about it.

Now he preferred jelly slugs and simply didn't have the same interest.
Jonas rolled his eyes as he heard Blaise say something about Wildsmith going to Ravenclaw.
"I just said that," he muttered.
Kitty whispered an answer to Jace's question about the Grey Lady. "She's still troubled. I don't think they've agreed among themselves what they should do. Um I can explain more later." Because the lesson was starting and it would be a poor example if a prefect was caught talking during class.
Her hand shot into the air. "Perpetua Fancourt," she added. "She's famous for many things, but I'm impressed by her style. Did you know she dyed her skin blue? Not sure why, other than she had a unique fashion style."
Running his tongue over his split lip, Tak entered the History of Magic classroom with his head held high. He wasn't embarrassed or shy, or even proud of his current appearance - split lip and slightly bruised face - he just didn't care. Eyes lingering in the Professors desk he didn't say a word before reaching into the bowl and grabbing about four of the chocolate frogs. Taking a seat at a random desk he started tossing his frogs in his bag. Everyone was doing the greeting their friends thing an that was cool. He just didn't want to.

She pulled off her cloak, she wouldnt be needing out with the charms in place. Noelle's eyes searched for a spot to sit. She had started to make her way over to Olly, Char, Henry, and Owen, but bugger.... only a four person desk. She gave them a little wave and a smile, all of them being her friends.
She changed directions and headed to sit by Kat. "Hey Kat." She said brightly and sat down beside her. "Mind if I sit with you?" She'd seen Azura here too but she was already sitting with a few others.
Kat was just sitting there nomming on her chocolate frog. She should probably be looking at her book or studying somehow. She really wasn't paying attention to anything her desk and her chocolate. Well that was until out of the corner of her eye she seen someone sit across from her. "Hey, I'm Katerina." She has seen the guy, Tak around but hadn't really spoken to him before. She was slightly curious as to why he had sit here and why his appearance look they way it did? The Hufflepuff was not the type ask such questions. It was rude.
Debating on whether or not she wanted to open that other chocolate frog or save it for later. That was her original plan, but it was like the chocoalte frog was calling to her. She looked down, when her stomach growled. EXCUSE me, you have already had a chocolate frog. Chill tummy. Kat looked up and seen Noelle. "Hey, Noelle."
The lesson was now underway and she prepared herself for the lesson. The third year couldn't help but to grin slightly. She didn't understand what was so hard to just say hello to the professor, people were so unfriendly and rude. Whatever. Anyway back to the lesson, Kat raised her hand "The one is Glover Hipworth. As Paige mentioned he invented the pepper up potions used for colds, ironically his chocolate frog card picture is of him sneezing." Maybe he needed to take some of his pepper up potion before hand.

Harvey looked at the cards, then smiled to himself. He had discussed all of them with his grandparents that summer. This was easy. And now to pick a fact most other people didn't know... he loved history!

There he went being grumpy again. Bentley didn't care though. Blaise needed to learn how to be a better business man.
He turned his attention from Ace and his cousin to focus on the professor.
"Umm Ignatia Wildsmith was born in the British Isles...fancy that." So was his paternal grandmother. She invented weird teas though...not anything as important as the floo network.

Right. He'd just said that. Of course.
For all his trying, there was nothing he could do the remove the impassive look that settled on his face. "Congratulations, mate. You expecting a trophy now? Medals and accolades?" His brow quirked upward as if he'd been waiting on a response before the boy simply turned to face the Professor again.
"I don't reckon I've got anything constructive to add to the class afterall, Professor. Terribly sorry you had to listen to the same response twice." Sorry indeed, for now the sky might be in danger of falling and they were all going to die.
Go figure.

Jonas put his hands up. "My bad," he said. Though even with his own British accent, it still sounds weird.
Colt nodded toward Natalia and relaxed in his chair. He saw the cards being shown in front of the class. He had to squint to see since his eyesight wasn't too good or else the cards were really small. He saw the lettering and recalled learning about Bertie Botts. He raised his hand and made a comment, "Bertie Bott was born in 1935." Seems like a lifetime ago. He wasn't even a thought yet.

Blaise shrugged at him. That was the extent of his initial response. It wasn't particularly a big deal to him either way, in fact it seemed more like it'd been a problem for Jonas than it could have ever been for himself. "It's whatever. I'm not fussed."
Thinking about it, his quill surely made a bigger deal about it than him too but the boy was still tired, and it took a whole lot of energy to be REALLY upset.
"You know your chocolate frog cards."Nods.

Olivia was prepared to tell Cassie that Yes, of course she could sit with them, but then she was walking off to sit with another girl, and that was totally fine. The Gryffindor waved after her, a slight frown on her face. It was an off day for her, obviously.
... but then the class was officially starting, and she was tried her to best to buckle down and really focus on whatever the discussion would be able today. The kicker was, however, that her mind was just elsewhere at the moment. All her lessons would be difficult to follow...
Huh.
Notes. She could... take notes.
So, that's just what the blonde was doing; a glitter pen clutched tightly within her grasp. But also... "Like Ace said, they were all innovative thinkers." Tak snorted. And loudly.
It was almost like a deja vu the moment Newton started talking about not saying hello.
In Japan greetings were usually accepted as well. A hello, but a simple head bow did wonders. Tak didn't do those either though because he hadn't learnt that was the standard until much later, after he had already been scolded then too, and the Professors already saw him as disrespectful so it didn't matter.
He had been taught to sit down and shut up when he entered a room, it was best just not to have yourself be noticed. And yet all these Professors seemed to take it personally. Anyways- one fact about one of the people on the cards? "The second card- that guy is sneezing." And that was a fact.

"Thank you for the apology Ms Kettleborn, that is totally understandable." Rosalyn sent the girl a smile. She really hated being THAT Professor, she just felt that they needed to treat each other with respect and courtesy. The snort from Mr Asakura did not go unnoticed but she had seen him be disrespectful in the past. Sadly.
Moving on!
SPOILER!!: Perpetua Fancourt

Her hand shot into the air. "Perpetua Fancourt," she added. "She's famous for many things, but I'm impressed by her style. Did you know she dyed her skin blue? Not sure why, other than she had a unique fashion style."
"Very good! she told the class as answers began coming in. They were off to a great start. It was good to see that her students knew about some of the famous inventors from history. Smiling, she began writing on the board. It was a good idea for them to start taking notes as this information might prove to be important in the future.
As she wrote, she spoke, emphasizing on what had already been mentioned and adding some information of her own. "Perpetua Fancourt is known for inventing the lunascope, which as Ms Kettleborn mentioned is used to show the phases of the moon. This she did in response to the difficulty in reading moon charts."
"She was born in the British Isles in the year 1900, and as Ms Snow mentioned, attended Hogwarts in the early 1900s - 1911 to be exact - and was sorted into Ravenclaw. After graduating from school, she went on to become a well known astronomer. She died in the year 1991 at the age of 91 and that was when she was placed on a Chocolate Frog card. For her achievement in inventing the lunascope. And yes, Ms Valentine is right in saying that her skin WAS dyed blue at some point." Definitely a unique decision.

Sigh.
Still, her attention went to the enlarged chocolate frog cards and knew some without needing to read the names written at the bottom. Particularly one that had come up quite often in her own healing studies, which was why her hand went up and she was able to speak with some confidence. "Glover Hipworth," she began, nodding her head towards the number 58 card of the gentleman about to sneeze. "Is the inventor of the Pepperup Potion, which we now use as a cure for the common cold."
Something that perhaps several of her classmates would seek of the Healer soon enough given how much the cold seemed to be effecting them.
Inventors though...clearly the theme of the day...which had Paige start to consider the nature of these inventions and what sort of link there may be between them all. One for transportation, one for confectionary consumption, one for health, and one for practicality...hmm...

Were they still wide awake and paying attention?
It was time for them to move on to the next figure that they were discussing. She did have to chuckle a little at Ms Delgado and Mr Asakura for mentioning that Glover Hipworth was sneezing in his picture. "Very true. Very likely that suffering from a cold himself helped in thinking of a cure for the ailment." And Thank Merlin for that because Joy certainly would be using a lot of the stuff during cold season.
"As a few of you mentioned, he invented the Pepperup Potion, which we can all thank for helping us deal with the common cold. Unlike muggles who have to plow through them, we just need to go the the Healer for some." Wasn't that lovely? She went back to writing on the board as more information came out. "He was born in the year 1742, somewhere in the British Isles. Like Mr Jarvis mentioned, he attended Hogwarts in the early 1750s. Around 1753 to be exact, under Headmistress Derwent. After Hogwarts he began working in potioneering. It was in the late 1700s or early 1800s that he developed the Pepperup Potion."

He can no longer feel the soles of his feet!
Now, onto the lesson.
Jace waited until all portraits were revealed, and realized right away that they all have something in common. This made the Ravenclaw sit up straighter, temporarily forgetting about the numbness he felt on his feet. Raising one pale hand in the cold air, Jace waited for his turn to answer. "That's Ignatia Wildsmith, professor. She invented the Floo Powder." As soon as he retracted his hand back, he already has his quill in his hand, listing down the other great minds in front of them, and jotting down what he knows about them.

And he would leave it at that before turning to face the Professor.

"Umm Ignatia Wildsmith was born in the British Isles...fancy that." So was his paternal grandmother. She invented weird teas though...not anything as important as the floo network.
Nodding at the answers as the continued coming in, Rosalyn moved on to writing down information about the third historical figure - Ignatia Wildsmith.
"Excellent. As mentioned by Mr Reed, Ignatia Wildsmith is the person who invented Floo Powder. While not everyone uses this method of transportation, it is a huge benefit to many wizarding families and something that has had great impact on the wizarding world. All you need is some Floo Powder and a fireplace on the Floo Network and you can travel anywhere else on said network!" A lot faster than broomsticks.
The comment by Mr Bellaire-Moore got a chuckle out of her. "Yes, she WAS born in the British Isles which seems to be a theme today." Imagine that. She smiled. "And yes, she was sorted in Ravenclaw," she added to the two boys who said the same thing. "It's okay if more than one person says an answer, I just want to have an idea of what you all know," she said as encouragement even though it seemed that there were no problems occurring.
Moving on. "She was born in the year 1227 and started attending Hogwarts around the year 1238." Definitely the most historical of all the people they were currently discussing. "After graduating from Hogwarts, she is thought to have studied Herbology, and from there discovered the properties of the Floo plant. It is from this plant that Floo Powder was created." Went to show how amazing plants could be! Just look at Gillyweed as another example. "She died in 1320 when she was about 93 years old."

... except for the Bott guy maybe. That was because her dad knew a few Botts. And her brother. Genny raised her arm, "Bertie Bott came up with the candy by accident. The Bott family remains wealthy and famous till this day, too." That was definitely an important fact.

She knew some facts, because she had looked at the back of her cards.
Putting her hand up, she smiled then spoke. "That one is Bertie Bott. He created the candy "Bertie Bott's beans by accident. He was actually trying to create tasty treats, but created these beans by accident. I love them, though some of the beans aren't so tasty"

He raised his hand and made a comment, "Bertie Bott was born in 1935." Seems like a lifetime ago. He wasn't even a thought yet.
On to the last figure, who was probably the most recognizable since he had invented a candy! One that she was a little scared to eat, but a great accomplishment nonetheless.
She wrote the information down on the board and students began sharing what they knew about the man. "Indeed, he DID invent the candy by accident," she said impressed that they knew that little tidbit. Chocolate Frog cards could be so informative! Also, this was something that they all should make note of because it just went to show how life could turn out sometimes; anyone could become an inventor.
"As Mr Winchester said, he was born in the year 1935. In Great Britain. Not much is known about his time at Hogwarts, but it is possible that he was a classmate of Minerva McGonagall." Another well known person from history. "It IS known, however, that Bertie dedicated his life to confectionery. Because of this, he made a mistake that would make him VERY famous. One day in the 1950s or so, he had been trying to create candy from food when a dirty sock accidentally joined the mix." Hence some of the really gross flavours which - as Ms Paton said - were not very tasty. Indeed!

Yep, every flavoured beans were significant.

But oh Blaise got a customized quill apparently. One that over-embellishes. The Gryffindor Ace had to laugh at that "I bet it’s a most entertaining quill…." oh Bentley knows how to hook him up with one? "Well, I am more partial to custom-made stuff…" he nodded smirking. So yeah game on Bentley.
Oh lesson was starting. The boy leaned back into his seat as he looked up at the collectible cards Professor Newton has on display. Oh interesting. Bertie Bott he knew very well for several reasons, but the others were more obscure. Reading his text book he noticed something "Professor, all four of them are creative thinkers, because they all invented something, some out of need, some out of accident, but it seems theyre the kind of people who thinks outside the box."

... but then the class was officially starting, and she was tried her to best to buckle down and really focus on whatever the discussion would be able today. The kicker was, however, that her mind was just elsewhere at the moment. All her lessons would be difficult to follow...
Huh.
Notes. She could... take notes.
So, that's just what the blonde was doing; a glitter pen clutched tightly within her grasp. But also... "Like Ace said, they were all innovative thinkers." Just because Liv was a loud mouth and it physically pained her at times not to speak. "I love that some of the ones you're presenting are also women."GIRL POWER!
And here were two answers that made her HAPPY! Very happy indeed. "Very good observation, Ms Phillips! Some of them ARE woman and it is very good to see that the historical playing field has many important figures from both genders." She had purposely chosen two men and two women to show that in her opinion gender didn't matter.
"Mr Salander is also correct and has touched on the heart of the lesson today! As we can see, all of these figures invented something out of need. Even candy serves a sort of need - to a sweet tooth at least." Goodness knows that Honeydukes and Sugarplums both did VERY well. "Inventions can happen on purpose or by accident, but EVERYONE is capable of inventing something if they put their mind to it. All it takes is a little bit of thinking outside of the box!" Rosalyn believed that everyone was capable of that even if it was easier for some than it was for others.
And now for the next question: "Going off of this, what sort of considerations would a person need to think about in the process of inventing something? None of these people stumbled into their inventions by accident. Well, besides Bertie Bott, but he had been trying to create another candy at the time." So really her point still stood.
OOC: Great job, everyone! I'll be moving along again in about 24 hours or so!
And now for the next question: "Going off of this, what sort of considerations would a person need to think about in the process of inventing something? None of these people stumbled into their inventions by accident. Well, besides Bertie Bott, but he had been trying to create another candy at the time." So really her point still stood.
Considerations...eeeem. Well shoot. There wasn't anything Jonas could think off the top of his head yet....but...
"Maybe the means?" he asked a bit unsure of what the question meant in the first place. "Like someone wanted a quicker way to travel so they invented floo powder."
And now for the next question: "Going off of this, what sort of considerations would a person need to think about in the process of inventing something? None of these people stumbled into their inventions by accident. Well, besides Bertie Bott, but he had been trying to create another candy at the time." So really her point still stood.

Genny looked around. Did everyone understand the question? Because she struggled a bit with. UHm. She raised her arm tentatively anyway, "I think as long as you're determined you can do anything." And create anything. So, her answer was Passion.

"They need a reason, motivation,"Harvey answered quickly, thinking about the sneezing figure. "Like, if Hipworth had a cold, or got them often, then he'd probably spend a lot of time thinking about how to cure one, and he eventually figured it out.""
It was a fun bit that he noticed among the four of them, perhaps a vibe he sensed given that he has his own bit of invention that he uses on a daily basis. And perhaps influenced his reply on her next question "Well Professor, theres an old saying 'Necessity is the mother of invention' so I guess one needs to have an awareness of his or her surroundings or circumstances that’s needs solving or improving. "

Means. Necessity. Motivation. Determination.
All good words...but when Paige thought back on the brief experimentation her and Penelope had done to try and invent ink that wrote in polka dots...none of those really came to mind. Genny's determination came the closest, however. Necessity...not so much. It was not completely necessary for her to own said ink, nor did she really have the means as an underclassman.
One word...did come to mind...at least with regards to her own situation...and that was curiosity. It was what sparked the desire for innovation and what had pushed her to try and pursue it through. Although her and Penelope never reached their goal, school and life in general getting in the way, the experience had been worth it.
But, rather than voice any of her thoughts aloud - particularly since she found this particular question a little too circumstantial? - she continued to keep up with her notes on each of the four inventors being presented today.
