History of Magic Lesson One - Wizarding Inventions

The chilly December air had taken to entering the castle, making the rooms rather drafty. Professor Newton didn't mind the cold so much but didn't want her students to feel uncomfortable, so she cast heating charms. Hopefully no one would doze off during the lesson because she always hates docking points.

The seating arrangement is as usual: groups of desks scattered around the room, all in groups of four. Students are welcome to sit wherever they want to though Professor Newton is free to move students around if they are disrupting the lesson and not getting any work done.

A bowl of Chocolate Frogs sits on her desk and anyone is welcome to take one or several. The Professor herself is standing by the blackboard up front and waiting for people to start arriving.

Lesson Progression:
State one fact about any of these historical figures
What kinds of things should a person consider while inventing something?
Class Activity

OOC: Welcome to the first History of Magic lesson! While this is the first class that we are RPing, keep in mind that this is NOT the first lesson of term. I hope you all have read the class rules. Next post will be in approximately 24 hours. Some talking is okay, but PLEASE keep socializing to a minimum. CLASS HAS OFFICIALLY STARTED.

Merlin he wasn't up for History of Magic today. Between Herbology and Arithmancy earlier, he didn't think he had much concentration left in him to go over history texts. Could they learn about goblins and treaties later in the week? When he didn't have two such draining subjects right before? That'd be great.

Blaise trudged into the classroom, alongside his cousin. If you asked him, they should have just been given an early lunch and call it a day.

"Hello Professor." Came his greeting as he plopped into one of the seats at their usual desk. The quill and notepad that floated just above his shoulder recorded her stance but there was currently very little in the way of stimulus to occupy it. Eventually the lesson would begin and that would change, it just needed some patience.

Also, it was warm in here. That was a welcomed change from the chilly corridors they had to walk through.

Azura walked into the History of Magic room and was instantly grateful for the heat in the room. It felt like a warm blanket had been wrapped around her and she let go of the cloak that she had wrapped tightly around her.

"Hello Professor Newton, how are you?" " She asked as she waved and then headed to her usual seat. They didn't have assigned seating like they did with Professor Finch, but she had claimed a seat on the left as her own..

History of Magic had always been one of those subjects that were touch-and-go when it came to Brooklyn’s opinion. She had liked it when she was younger, but then as the professors had changed her interest had waned a little. In fact, it had more devolved simply into her intent to make certain that all professors respected her, but nothing more than that. She had often found herself thinking about histories other than her own, other than the Wizarding world during lessons, and yet she was still content in her belief that the professors didn’t know. Her grades hadn’t revealed any of that, anyhow, and she wasn’t planning on that changing.

The warmth in the classroom was pleasant, anyhow, after the normal drafts that went through the corridors during winter. She had even been able to drop her usual charms she cast on herself, her sweater seeming to be enough given the environment in the room. “Good day Professor Newton,” she said, inclining her head toward the younger Newton slightly and accompanying it with a polite smile as she headed for a seat. Respect went both ways, after all, and besides, so far she hadn’t had any reason to wonder if the woman was going to keep her position. There hadn’t been any accidental poisonings after all.

With two pullovers underneath his robe, and half of his face wrapped in his school scarf, Jace quietly pushed the door of the History Classroom, and went to offer the professor a bow in greeting. "G-good day, Professor." he said in a muffled tone and immediately took a seat beside Azura. "It's so cold outside. And...hi."

Even if there were warming charms in place, Jace still felt uncomfortable. "This is the reason why I don't like visiting Hokkaidō...This weather is just too much." he said as he unwrapped his face and folded his scarf neatly, tucking it away in his bag. In exchange, he got his book and writing implements out and waited for the rest to arrive.

The Australian was cold.

Why was he in England again? Could he please go home to where it never got this cold? He suddenly remembered why he didn't like England, hugging himself to stay warm. He didn't own clothes suitable to the weather yet. He really needed to work on that.

Jasper's teeth were chattering as he walked into the room, and even feeling the temperature shift his teeth kept chattering. "G-g-g-'day Pr-professor," Jasper managed to stutter out before sitting himself down next to Jace.

With a small wave to both Azura and Jace, he dropped his head down on the table, hugging himself and waiting for his teeth to STOP chattering and for some kind of feeling to return to his fingers.

Genny enjoyed a little bit of history. She did not particularly liked the theoretical part of it, but she loved the stories a lot. Her mom knew how to make them exciting and interesting. Hopefully today's class was fun, too.

Naturally, Genny greeted the professor with a wide smile, "Hi professor!" And assumed the seat closest to Brooklyn. "Hi." Because they were totally friends by now. Genny stalked the heck out of her all year.

The cold weather didn't go well with Owen. It made him a bit moody. So instead of his usual wide grin, the badger could only be seen wearing what looked like a forced smile as he sauntered inside the History of Magic classroom. Still, he gave the lady Professor a bow, "Morning, Professor."

It was warmer inside. Owen supposed he was thankful for that but it didn't do much to alleviate his sucky mood, nor did the chocolate frogs. He picked one, bit into it, chewed and swallowed. Until it was gone.

Ehhhh.

He also chose to sit on a vacant desk faaaaaaaaaaaaarthest.

Moody Owen was moody.

Harron Peasley 10-04-2016 12:19 PM

Oh, Chocolate Frogs! Dalton may have eyed them suspiciously before slipping one into his pocket and looking up at the Professor gratefully. "Thanks," he managed, before weaving through the desks and slipping into a seat near the back of the room. Gosh, he always hated being one of the first to arrive.

The heating charms were appreciated, though, and the sixth year pulled his beanie off and stuffed it in his bag. Hat hair galore.

Steelsheen 10-04-2016 01:38 PM

Blaiseh xD

He has got to sort out his Newtons….

Stuffing his class schedule back into his robes, the leonine lad breezed in through the right classroom "Hiya Professor Newton!" the leonine lad greeted her cheerfully as he always did, quickly plucking some chocolate frogs on his way to his desk. He had lost count how many times he took the wrong notes and books to the wrong class, so much so that he is considering bringing both notes and textbooks on any day that his schedule says Newton.

Haste makes waste eh? Fo'sho #GryffindorOccupationalHazzard

He plunked himself on Blaise' table, across from the boy because he knew Bentley would be joining them shortly, and he usually took the seat next to his cousin. "Hey yo Blaise question-- that self-taking notes quill you got there-- where'd you buy that?" Clearly the Curly Top was interested in adding this to his arsenal of self-doing things.

sweetpinkpixie 10-04-2016 02:29 PM

Blaise, Tenacius, and Bentley (??) mentions ish

Entering the classroom, Paige opted to bypass any chocolate frog consumption and instead focused on greeting Professor Newton with her usual Hufflepuff smile - although a tiny bit forced as the draft had caused a bit of an unpleasant shiver to torture her spin at just the right moment. Teeth chattering a bit, just until the heating charms took effect anyway, Paige made her way over towards a vacant grouping of desks and slid into her seat. While setting her owl shaped backpack on her chair, she couldn't help overhearing what Tenacius was asking Blaise, the latter of whom's chair just to happened to be back to back with hers.

"You can purchase Quick Quotes Quills at Scrivenshaft's Quill Shop in Hogsmeade," she offered the third year. Although she was well aware that Blaise's particular quill was a bit selective and, well, unique with its interpretation of things. She had edited enough of his work to know.

Hi Dalton

History of Magic wasn't a bad subject and it wasn't a wand subject so Natalia was actually pretty good in it. Though she did find it hard to stay focused depending on what they were learning about. The winter had fully come in and all Nat could think of was hot tea or coco. Couldn't they have class in the kitchen near the fireplace with plenty of hot drinks?

Walking into the room she gave the Professor a small smile, "Hello Professor" before turning and looking at the desks. She didn't mind if she sat in the front or back in this class so when she noticed and empty spot by Dalton she headed over. "Mind if I sit by you today?" She hoped he didn't because she was already pulling her stuff out and sitting down in the seat by him.

Owen

Even if it was rather chilly this December day, Henry wasn't too bothered with the cold. He had already gotten his morning run in which always warmed him up. It was, of course, more difficult to get up on the colder days, but he managed to push himself to do it. And it did help him feel more awake when he went to class.

Stepping into the History of Magic classroom, he first spotted the professor and gave her a smile before reaching for a chocolate frog from her desk. "Hi, Professor Newton. Thanks for the sweets." Even if History of Magic wasn't his favorite subject, a class with snacks was almost always welcome.

As he turned to look for a seat, Henry spotted several of his friends already seated and he gave a few grins and nods as he walked through the room. Dropping his things onto the table furthest from everything, he took a seat with Owen at his table. "Hey!" he gave his friend one of his usual cheerful grin. "Why so far away?" Not that he was complaining, just curious. A seat further away might be less noticeable if he got distracted from taking notes, which was likely in a class like this anyway. "Maybe we should get one of those Quick Quotes Quills to take notes in here," he mentioned to Owen as he heard some talk about them.

Pulling at the packaging of his candy, he waited for class to begin. Was it him or did Owen look sorta grouchy?

Blaise watched the others take chocolate frogs, but he wasn't so inclined. Food was the easiest thing to successfully mess with when you wanted the student population doing things--a fact that had been proven time and time again. The Gryffindor had been very serious when he said he wouldn't trust the food offered to him by Professors anymore so while some took a few, he knew he and his cousin were safe. Bentley didn't like sweets.

Brown eyes fell to his housemate as he took the seat across from him. Self-taking notes quill? A curious glance was spared toward the quill floating above his shoulder.

He was about to reply when Paige beat him to it. The boy COULD get it from that shop at Hogsmeade, last he checked. Also, hi Paige. They were practically sharing tables....just...facing two different directions. Hi.

"She's right, but they're not specifically note taking quills. As in, taking notes with one isn't the best idea because it embellishes everything. You'll only end up with distorted notes you'll have to spend time figuring out and reconstructing later." Which, personally, he didn't mind. It helped him learn when he had to go over it like that. "Mine's special though. You'll have to have someone tweak yours to get it like this one in particular."

The others in his collection were regular quick quotes quills but this one was............questionably and deceptively sentient for something that actually wasn't at all. Just a trick of a charm really. He knew his quill wasn't REALLY sentient, but it had a habit of acting that way. The boy was very convinced his quill was deliberate in what it did despite the lack of evidence. Best gift his dad could ever give him.

"Good morning Professor Newton," Kitty greeted her cheerfully as she stepped into the (thankfully) heated classroom. She took off her robe hood as soon and approached the front desk where the chocolate frogs were. "Thank you," she said quietly as she took one of the chocolate frogs. It wasn't every professor who offered chocolate to students before a lesson began.

She then went to sit down next to Jace and Azura, waving to Jasper as she passed him. "Hey guys," she whispered as she sat down.

littledhampir 10-04-2016 04:48 PM

Owen and Henry?

Thank Merlin for heating charms. Olly was glad the classroom was not quite as cold as the temperature outside. He did not want to spend the whole lesson freezing and shivering. But he was pleased to find the temperature of the room a lot more pleasant than he had been expecting. Olly was smiling as he greeted the professor. "Hello professor." And of course he immediately took a chocolate frog.

Olly glanced around for just a second before making his way toward the back of the room to a cluster where he recognized the two boys. "Hey," he greeted Owen and Henry. "Mind if I join you?" He was already setting his bag down and sitting in one of the two remaining desks so he hoped it was fine. But why wouldn't it be?

Sonea 10-04-2016 04:56 PM

Puffing because she was cold the first year walked toward the history of magic classroom and pushed her hands deeper inside her pockets, she hated the cold! The castle was made of stone so of course everything was cold around her, the cold seemed to come from the stones themselves! Shivering she hoped that the classroom would be warmer.

Entering the classroom she first noticed that the professor had warmed the classroom, what was a good thing because now she at last could be a little more comfortable. "Hello professor" greeted Leesha while looking hungrily at the candy on the professor's desk. Looking around her she saw that some other students were eating it so she quickly grabbed one for herself. "Thank you professor" she said grateful, if you could make her happy with one thing, than you definitely should bring her candy, she LOOOOVED candy!

Walking over to a random seat she sat down and opened her back to grab her textbook and other necessities.

Davvy_Wavvy 10-04-2016 05:23 PM

Blaise, Ace and Paige

"Hullo Professor."

Bentley took his usual seat at the table, next to his cousin. He gave Tenacious a nod when the younger boy joined them at the table. He was about to throw his hand over Blaise's mouth before he could answer when the older girl ruined it for them anyways.

"Thanks a lot Paige."

He shook his head at Ace. "Don't listen to her. We get them from a special dealer. If you want we can hook you up with one...of course it will be for a price. Nothing is free after all. He offered the boy a sincere looking grin.

"Well?"

Charlotte skipped into class in a good mood. Her birthday was SO SOON. She was ALMOST fifteen. Even potential boredom in History of Magic couldn't beat that down! She spotted a group of her friends and made a beeline for them.

"Hi boys!" She sat down without thinking to ask. She was obviously welcome to be their fourth, right?

"Oooooh, where'd you get the chocolate frogs?" She hadn't noticed. Nope.

Erindipity 10-04-2016 06:13 PM

Anyone?

Getting moving on cold days was a TASK. All the Gryffindor wanted to do was stay in her warm common room and curl up on the sofa. Ugh. Grumbling to herself she stepped into the classroom and SIGHED. A sigh of relief. Warmth! Chyeah!

Eyeing the bowl of chocolate frogs she crink led her nose before smiling at the Professor. "Lo, Professor. " That was as good as it got for the moment. Yep.

Without paying real attention to where she was sat, Dora ambled over and plopped down at a desk and starred to arrange her things.

Looking up when she was done unpacking her things she saw that a girl had taken the seat next hers and she didn't knew who it was. Well, the girl was a Gryffindor that much was clear but she didn't knew the girl herself. Well, there was only one way to find that out right? "Hey, I'm Leesha" she greeted the other girl friendly while eating her candy.

Chloe was exhausted. It was cold, she was frustrated with runes (an outside of class project she was working on with Bastien) and she was dreading the holidays. It did not make for a pleasant attitude coming off the fourteen year old.

She didn't acknowledge the professor, take a frog or sit at a table with people she knew. Instead, the Ravenclaw made her way to a seat and plopped down silently.

2111jen 10-04-2016 06:34 PM

Whoa. A classrooom that is actually warm. And this is one of Jonas' favorite subjects. What would they be learning about? Oh, hopefully it would be about the second wizard war. That was always great to learn about. Though it seemed to him that even though it's been....how many years? At least forty he thinks since the defeat of Voldemort. Yeah he wasn't afraid to say his name but it seemed like everyone else was. Oh well, he guessed it couldn't be helped. He muttered a "Hey professor," before settling into his seat.

MunchyBubbles 10-04-2016 08:08 PM

Jace and Jasper

Oh there they were.. her two other halves had arrived and they looked.. extremely cold.. Azura blinked a bit realizing that neither one of them were from here and they weren't used to the cold..

Cold just made her feel incredibly lonely.. but she was used to her.. They were both shivering..

"Hey you two.." She whispered softly as she took off her cloak and put it over the boys laps (handy cause they were sitting next to each other).. hoping the extra heat would help.. seeing as it had a warming charm on it..

"Yeah it is cold.. I don't like it.. " She said softy.. just because it made her sad..

She managed a smile at Kitty
though as she walked past them. [/color]

Henry hadn't been at his seat long when he heard another of his friends greeting him and Owen, and he looked up from picking at the packaging of his chocolate frog. "Oh, hey, Olly!" he grinned at the Slytherin as he gestured at the empty chairs at their table. "Sure, have a seat." Nope, he wouldn't mind at all.

Pretty much all hope for him paying much attention in a class that already had so little of it was quickly going out the window now, and Henry gave Char a wide smile as she joined them next. Maybe he really should give some serious thought about a Quick Quotes Quill taking notes for him.

"Hi, Char!" He glanced down at his chocolate frog that he hadn't quite completely opened yet and slid it over to her. "There's some up on Professor Newton's desk, but you can have mine if you want." He could go get some more to share with the whole table.
