Default Herbology Lesson I - Grafting

As the students enter the greenhouse today, it is a warm reprieve from the cold that engulfed them outside. The sun was shining, and Paul was sitting atop a table in front of the greenhouses, his gloves next to him as he waited, calmly, for people to enter.

“Circle up, circle up, everyone!” he called out every few minutes. As the students should be well aware by now, since it was November, they meditated before starting every lesson.

Four different types of trees were huddled in the back of the greenhouse, but they were young, and most had little to no leaves budding. This was not a lesson that some would find interesting, but Paul thought it would be fun nonetheless! Granted, anything to do with plants was fun to Paul. There was also a few tools in the front on the table Paul was sitting on...just in case students couldn’t handle the magic today...however, one of the things they would be doing would REQUIRE magic so...hmm. He hoped this wouldn’t be an issue.

There was a basket of flowers on the table, too, for people to give to others, like he had done last term. And he HOPED they remembered the rule! It was such a lovely one, after all.

“Start clearing your mind noooooooow!” he smiled giddily and waved his wand in a leisurely way, making bubbles come out of the end of it...right into the faces of the students as they walked in.

Who didn’t like bubbles?

OOC: Hi, guys, welcome to class (whooh!). Just a couple things to keep in mind. This is not the first Herbology lesson of term, all right? It’s like..late November IC right now. And yes, Paul starts all of his lessons with meditations. <3 Secondly, the flower rule is still in play. If you are not familiar with it:
*There is a basket of flowers Paul keeps in the front; feel free to have your character come up at any time to grab one, and give it to another student if someone particularly touches them emotionally or anything.
Familiarize yourself with not only our rules but also SS site rules, all of which apply.

I will not be moving on for another 18 or so hours!

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Once again, Blaise began his work the moment the Professor began his explanation. The boy found it helped with the exercise when he could follow as closely as possible in real time, just in case. It minimized errors, which worked GREAT for him considering he'd gotten a pat to the head and would hate for the Professor to suddenly regret it.

HEAD PATS DIDN'T HAPPEN OFTEN, OKAY??

The young Gryffindor took the Mahogany baby!tree into his hand, sizing it up to decide where he would make the cut. However he did it, the boy had to make sure it fit onto the other piece like a puzzle which meant....just...about....HERE!

Blaise tilted the plant ever so slightly just so he could get a better look then as best he could, he cut it at a 45 degree angle. That looked about right. To be sure, he placed it against the other baby tree he'd cut and swelled with pride at how snuggly it fit.

This was grounds for another head pat if you asked him but he wouldn't push it. Nah. Just a little praise. Nothing special except it was 'cause he never ever ever got it in his other classes outside Muggle Studies.

The flap the Professor was talking about was very familiar--had to be, he'd only made another one maybe 5 minutes ago. Just as before, he cut straight back then held it out to take an objective look at it.

This would do nicely.

With the first cut down on her second tree, Olivia knew the notch was the second move to be made. It was a repeat of the first with the minor changes explained by Professor Myers. Two trees…two cuts…eventually lined up to be one tree when they grafted it all together. So they had to fit together to make all that work. The 46 degree angles in opposite directions. And now the ‘tongue’-like little item that obviously had some purpose.

The Ravenclaw started out flipping the top of the mahogany tree that she still held so the workable surface was upwards. Then glancing back and forth a few times between the diagrams and her particular tree, she first placed her knife and then figured out the direction she was to go. With a deep breath, she made a cautious cut, thankfully matching it up well enough. It seemed perhaps she was getting the hand of this.

Probably helped she wasn’t relying on her wand and magic.

Ariadne was sill super embarrassed from asking a question which apparently should have been really, really obvious. She had decided not to ask anymore questions, but she was glad the professor had given an extra clarification this time as to which plant to use. So that meant the mahogany for Ariadne! She put the first part of her plant aside and turned toward the mahogany.

At least the process seemed to make a lot of sense, and Ariadne could SEE what they were doing and where they were going. The whole 'like a puzzle' description really put things into place for her. So basically all she needed now was a puzzle piece to put on top of the piece she had already created. The only issue she could see was HOW was she supposed to make sure she created a perfect match for the bottom half? She didn't know if she was THAT good at diffindo. But then there was the whole '45 degree angle in the opposite direction' thing, so she guessed as long as she got that part right, the pieces would fit.

Moving on!

Ariadne carefully put her wand exactly where the professor had indicated for them to. She paused for a few seconds to focus and then..."Diffindo!" she said. Whipping her wand around, she tried her best for a nice and neat and PERFECT forty-five degree angle. It LOOKED perfect...now whether or not it fit was a different story. Ariadne repeated the process she'd just did, but this time, she just made a little flap in the cut of the mahogany.

Now to tell if she'd created perfectly matching puzzle pieces or not. At least if she hadn't, the professor had said the cuts could be adjusted! That made her feel a LOT better and more at ease. Ariadne matched up the top and the bottom and eyed the results. Well, they at least LOOKED like matches, and she hadn't destroyed any small branches or buds either!

Chop chop indeed. Jaemin was carefully examining the cut part of his rootstock, but he stopped the moment the professor spoke and watched him very attentively. The pictures were good for examples, but nothing could beat actually seeing someone do it, and he toooooootally had before. All he had to do was make sure that everything was gonna line up, and his little mutant tree would be the happiest mutant tree to ever mutant.

Giving Julia an encouraging nod, the small boy picked up his grafting knife again. "I'll go first again," he said decisively, reaching for the mahogany tree and pulling it riiiight up to himself. A quick examination, and he gently poked a spot with the tip of the blade. Right there. That would be where he would cut it. Plenty of tree for his mutant, plenty of tree left over for... experimenting purposes.

The small boy stood to make sure he could get all the leverage he needed to make the clean cut, fingers of his left hand wrapping gently around the upper part to make sure it wouldn't move too much. It wasn't terribly difficult to cut it, but he did so veeeeeery carefully, pushing the knife slowly yet firmly as he tried to make sure that the angles would match up. It would be a tragedy if they didn't. A tragedy. He would have hurt a tree for absolutely no good reason if they didn't match.

"Doneee," he whispered, pulling the scion away from the now separated roots. As he had with the other, he hugged the cut away top before setting it down, pushing the root pot aside, and going about the tongue business again. It wasn't quite as easy this time, because he had to hold the treetop instead of having an anchored point like he had with the roots, but he managed it, pressing the knife into the tree just as slowly as he had cut it apart. He looked at Julia expectantly after, grinning. "Your turn!"

The professor insisted that cutting the trees didn't hurt that, that they didn't feel pain or feel any sense of loss at being cut essentially in half, and so Dot continued. It was hard to imagine having her legs cut off and different legs attached and not feeling some sense of... not quite being herself, but trees and people were a little different. She didn't have any leaves, for one.

Dot touched the roots of her scion tree, a tender sort of farewell, since they were not the part of the tree that got to live on forever. Maybe no one got to pick which part of them lived on and which got thrown on compost. Okay, ugh, she was being all drama and Ravenclaw. This was just Herbology and no reason to have a major mental break.

Using her wand, Dot sliced the her scion at the appropriate angle, lining it up with the rootstock to make sure they would slide together perfectly. It looked likely, based on her eyeballing them, but only time would tell. Again, she rejected use of her wand in cutting the tongue, since it required such fine motor skills. Dot could sew lace with her wand, but she didn't trust the life of a tree to it. Just a little... nick... and the flap was cut.

Was there some concern that the exposed hearts of these trees might dry out? Shouldn't they put them in water or something until it was time to actually do the grafting?

Now that that was done, Kaycee turned her attention to scion tree. Which, in her case, was mahogany. She carefully adjusted the tree so that she wouldn't hit any small branches.

Then, with a careful, "diffindo" she made a downward cut. Perfect. She thought she was pretty good at making puzzle trees, if anyone were to ask her.

She then made the quick tongue flap whatever cut.

Now. Could they stack it? Was it ready? She wanted to see her new mutant tree hybrid!

Ok so Professor Plantman starts demoing the next step. And yup just as Tenacius has guessed. The curly haired kid kept shifting his gaze between his plant and how the Professor was showing the cutting technique on his plant, which were pretty much identical. It don’t look so hard eh? But then again the Plantman was a superhero with plants, while he hasn’t even qualified as sidekick.

And he is totally marking his plant. Quill quill where are you?

As if on cue his quill popped up beside him and he grabbed it, making a mark using the slanted side of the rootstock. When that was done, Tenacius got his cutting tool and cut up the stem following the line that he made. Gently he set the top plant on the bottom plant….

…. It fits! Whew!

Just cut the tongue down and doneso yeah?

When that was completed, Tenacius fitted the rootstock and the scion stems together "Lets transfoooorm" he joked making sound effects as he pushed the stems and they latched into place. But when he let go of his hand, the stems wiggled. Uhoh.

"Professor?" the curly top raised his voice as he did his hand "Can we put something around these parts of the stem? Because it wiggles seeee?" He said as he gingerly tapped the stems "Aint this gonna fall with the weight?"

Davie's fit together well enough, even though the new tree leaned a bit. Heh. The leaning treesa. Did he need to tape it up now or...?

He wasn't trying to rush the professor or anything, he was just decently good at this subject. "Professor Myers, sir?" the second year raised his hand when he saw the professor had a free second. "Does this look okay? Do I need to cast a spell or anything?" He was curious if magical grafting was any different from Muggle grafting, now that he'd had a few minutes to try it out.

Paul stopped next to David and peered down at him. “Yessssss all in due time. Patience, Mr. Truebridge. I’m about to move us on to the next few steps--we are ALMOST done!”

“Yes, yes, as I juuuuuust said to David--we’re going to get to that in JUST a minute--” Such EAGER students, Merlin. DIdn’t they understand this was a process with MULTIPLE steps?

And with that, he went to the front of the room once more. They were so CLOSE to being done. Only two more steps. “We’re about to be done, my little students!” Paul smiled. “So--” he waved his wand and the bucket on his desk began to float, row by row, along the front of each row, rolls of grafting tape leaping out of the bucket and in front of each student. “As some of you noticed--the tongues should fit together--but that is NOT enough so--there is a spell we’re going to learn...and take note, in muggle grafting, we would tape together the trees...and leave them to grow on their own for a few months. With the use of magic...we can morph the trees together instantly! It’s great!” He smiled.

“So...fit your trees together if you have not done so already along the cuts and make sure the tongue fit together! After doing that, wrap around the cut part with your tape, firmly, too.” He paused to make sure everyone had followed.

“After you wrap your tree...the spell we’re going to learn today is...Jungo Arborem!” He wrote it, himself this time, across the blackboard. “Ju as in June...go….Arborem! Jungo Arborem! The wand movement is simple...just a flick of your wrist!” he smiled. It was a simple spell. “And if you successfully do the spell..you will have a grafted baby tree! Now...the particles and molecules and everything might not take correctly...and this is why we do have to continue to watch them closely as they grow. Now...let’s finish this up, everyone!” he smiled and began to wrap tape around his own tree...and was about to do the spell when...he noticed Azura..and heard her call for him.

Merlin O__O

Was there a lesson she wasn't going to get hurt in?

She sighed softly as she raised her non cut hand.. "Uhh, Professor, I cut my hand.." That was what she got for not using her wand! But she wanted to make a more precise cut for the tongue!!

Paul approached and saw the bleed and EEEEEEK he wasn’t the best at...healing stuff. “Azura! What did you do? Are you all right? How deep is it?!” he asked, taking her hand to examine it. “Did you do this with a grafting knife?”

She should be more careful! "I think I can just clear this up quickly if it's not TOO deep--" he had pulled out a handkerchief from his pocket to press it to the cut to get it to stop bleeding.

OOC: Wheeeee we're almost done! Paul is so proud! 1 post is fine for these steps! <3 I'll move on in 24 hours or so!

Rachel giggled. Professor Myers was so silly (in a good way). Not all of his students were little like Tia and Henric but she reasoned that he would always see his students as little no matter their age.

She listened to him as the bucket floated around. Yes, she had seen tape being used since her daddy liked doing things the muggle way sometimes. She smiled when the tape leapt out before her. Rachel immediately took it in her dominant hand and after ensuring that her little trees were properly lined up so that the tongues fitted, she started to wrap the tape around the joined ends to secure them.

While doing this, the Eagle had been muttering the incantation of the spell. "Jungo Arborem. Jungo Arborem. Jungo Arborem. Jungo Arborem." She set down the tape to switch it for her wand. She focused on the tree she was to be creating. "Jungo Arborem.'' Rachel flicked her wrist of the hand holding her wand and presto! One grafted tree.

This done, she was able to focus her attention on her dorm mate. "Azura?'' Rachel went over to the girl and Myers, filled with concern. Honestly, her friend was so clumsy but that wasn't her fault. She flinched at the bits of blood she was seeing on the kerchief. "Is there anything I can do to help?"

Great indeed! They’ll be seeing the result in seconds, and this made Jace excited. He’d been very careful and precise with the first four steps he did with his plants, so he was sure his tree would come out perfect. The Ravenclaw patiently waited for the floating bucket to come their way, and when it did, he beamed with awe when a roll of grafting tape landed in front of him.

Jace didn’t touch the tape for now, and instead, focused his attention to their professor up front. Jungo Arborem. Huh. Another spell to learn, eh? Not a problem at all! Jace wrote down the incantation first, its wand movement.

Jace pulled the rootstock closer to him, and picked up the mahogany tree with his other hand...and then slipped the scion into the cut he made on the rootstock. The cut wasn’t perfect perfect, but that’s exactly the use of the tape right? To make both plants stick to each other tighter. After fitting the two trees, Jace picked up his tape, and wrapped it around the joint. He pressed the wounded tape firmly to make sure that the scion won’t bend over should the plant be subjected to light winds.

After he was done wrapping his hybrid tree, he got his wand, flicked his wrist and said the incantation, “Jungo Arborem!” Blink. Erm...so did he do the spell correctly? Jace immediately raised his hand as soon as another series of questions popped inside his head. Professor Myers? What’s the use of the Jungo Arborem spell? Is it to speed up the binding process of the trees...or is it to...fuse the natural elements of the scion and rootstock?” Important question number one! “Also...” Jace’s voice faded as he watched the man approach Azura. While wondering what happened to his friend, the Ravenclaw continued with his question. “Do you have a list of rootstocks and scions that are compatible to each other? How do we know it’s compatible?” he asked looking over Azura and Professor Myers. Merlin, she did hurt herself again, didn’t she?

Carl had done gardening before, but root stocks and scions were new vocabulary terms for him. He jotted them down along with their meanings. He looked up every now and then to make sure that his trees were doing okay. And then they were beginning the actual grafting process!

He put his gloves on excitedly and listened to the instructions. Making a cut, it sounded easy enough but to him, it was already a challenge. Carl had not yet mastered the Diffindo spell and he was definitely not going to use a knife, because he was a wizard and wizards did magic. "Diffindo!" He muttered, pointing his wand at a spare piece of parchment. A clean cut was made and he grinned. He might be able to do this! Moving his honey-locust tree closer to him, he aimed at the trunk on a spot about three inches above the soil. He had considered taking out a ruler and measuring exactly the right distance, but thought against it as he was already lagging behind. He further adjusted his hold on the wand so that it was on a forty-five degree angle, more or less. "Diffindo!" He repeated, practically beaming as another cut appeared.

Carl picked up the top part of the honey-locust tree and set it on his desk. The tongue thing seemed really difficult to make ... and he did not want to screw up, so he turned to his grafting knife. Forget what he said earlier about wizards having to use magic. He cut a little flap about halfway up the cut, then checked to make sure that he had done it correctly. Yep, looked fine!

Time to move on to the scion (he was using the term already!).

Bella carefully placed the top of her Persian Silk tree to the side so she could move on to the next step for the lesson. She looked up at the picture that appeared on the board in front of the other, showing them how to make the tongue. She fixed her gloves to get a better grip on the grafting knife before she started to do the cut. She moved the knife haft way up the vertical slice she had already made and cut down to make the flap.

I got it. She thought with a smile, ready to move on to the next step.

Quietly listening to Professor Myers as he spoke Hady followed the next step of instructions. Not hard at all. Taking the top portion of her little tree she carefully fitted it to the rooted tree making sure that both of the trees fit together nicely. When they were nicely fit she checked to make sure the flaps went together as they should. With little to no trouble at all they went together like one little tree.

Grabbing the grafting tape out of the air as it floated in front of her the fifth year went about wrapping it firmly around the area where her tree met together to become one. After securing the tape in place she was very much ready to move on to the next and final step.

Jungo Arborem and a flick of her wrist hmm? That was all it would take to combine her trees and make them into one nice tree. Taking her wand into her hand she aimed it at the tree and cast firmly, "Jungo Arborem!" accompanied by a flick of her wrist in the direction of the tree. And that's all that was needed. There right in front of her on her desk was one just newly grafted baby tree that she had done herself!

Janelle jotted down the next set of steps, when Professor Myers presented them. She picked up her Mahogany tree and placed it where her rootstock had previously been. So now they had to do everything again, only the opposite of what they had done before. Like Myers said, they were making two puzzle pieces that eventually had to fit together. Janelle was probably more worried about this task than the previous one. What if the two pieces didn't fit together? Blocking that thought from her mind, she tried to get back to positive thinking.

Before she made her cut, Janelle inspected her tree. There were some baby buds trying to grow and she made sure not to cut anywhere near them. Picking up her grafting knife, Janelle tried to reverse the process in her mind. Again she used her finger to mark the spot where she would cut. Taking her requisite deep breath, Janelle carefully cut the tree's stem at a 45 degree angle. This time, the cut went the other way, as they were instructed to do. Now for the part she liked the least. Janelle used her knife to make a small flap on her mahogany stem. When she was done, she put down the knife. Turning toward her new tree's bottom half, she brought the top half over and placed it atop the other. Hopefully the match would be close enough to work.

Now how, Janelle wondered, were they going to attach the to tree pieces to each other? She imagined that there was a spell for that, but she would have to wait until the next step in the process was revealed. While she waited, Janelle wondered what they were going to do with the leftover tree pieces. She was sure that Professor Myers had a plan for them.

Finally they're almost done here.

Ava then fit the mahogany scion and the honey locust rootstock together. See? They're perfectly fit each other. It's the sign that she did the job perfectly. And then just like the man had said, the young lioness the grabbed the tape and wrapped the cut part with it firmly. She had heard some students impatiently asked the Professor what would make their grafting now was different with the muggle method and the answer was, of course, they're gonna use the magic.

Grabbing her wand, she practiced the wand movement and the incantation. This wasn't that complicated, just a flick of her wrist. Jungo Arborem. And now she cast the spell to her plant. "Jungo Arborem." She flicked her wrist and cast the spell.

And now they're done. Hooorraaay!!!

They were in the home stretch.

Listening to Professor Myers explain the next step, Esme watched as the basket made its rounds, grabbing her roll of tape when it bounced towards her.

Holding the two trees so that one piece was on top of the other, she began to caaaaaarefully tape them together. The last thing she wanted right now was to do a shoddy job and have her two trees out of place. Her brows furrowed in concentration, she wasn't even bothering to worry about the incantation for the spell he was teaching them; everything in its place and there was more than enough time for that.

Once she was satisfied with how everything looked, Esme picked up her wand so that she could practice the incantation. "Jungo Arborem... Jungo Arborem... Jungo Arborem..." A few flicks of the wrist and she was good to go.

"Jungo Arborem." With that, she had a grafted tree!

Madge had been very quiet all class, following the steps as they were instructed.

She placed the trees together as instructed but got a bit tangled in her tape. That's what you get for buying the cheapest gardening tape. it took a moment to right herself before finally tearing off an appropriate length of tape and bringing the trees together.

Now what was it the professor said the spell was? Oh, silly her, it's on the board.

"Jungo Arborem... Jungo Arborem... Jungo Arborem." She said to herself a few times before she even reached for her wand. Diction is very important, or so her grandmother told her before leaving on the train.

Madge lifted her wand tentatively, and with the instructed flick, or what she perceived to be instructed, she gave a quiet but determined "Jungo Arborem."

She wasn't quite sure if it was done right, but it SEEMED to work.

Azura bit her lip a little Professor Meyers came over to her and she looked down at her hand. "I wanted to use a grafting knife instead of a spell for cutting the tongue, so I could be more precise, and I got so excited that I did it, the knife slipped.. and cut my hand." She really needed to work on her concentration.

"I'm sorry." She said as she looked down at the handkerchief which was covering up her bloody hand and then she looked over at Rachel who had come over to see..

"I don't think it's that deep, I just haven't been able to finish cause of my hand." She asked as she looked over at Jace as he spoke to the Professor and she saw him looking over at him..

She gave him a thumbs up and turned back to Rachel and Professor Meyers..

SNOOZEFEST. That was all Scarlett could think. Plants were just so...so...ugh. She tried to be excited for Myers' sake. She really did. She liked the guy and as a Hufflepuff, she felt obligated to be enthusiastic. But they were basically sawing up little trees and it was not at all entertaining. Come on, at least throw a deadly plant into the mix or something!

Taking her knife, she gathered her materials and stood in front of her pot and sighed. Time to do this. She eyeballed the bottom of her pot and counted what she thought was about 3 inches and took the knife and slowly made her 45 degree cut. She tried to make it look EXACTLY like the diagram up on the board - and as far as she could tell, she'd done a pretty good! Now she had to make the...flap? Was that what it was called. The little hole thingy. That's what it was in her mind.

Taking the little knife again (because trying with her wand would be an EPIC disaster) she centered it in the middle of the cut and...CUT. She pulled back, and then took away the knife and inspected her work. That looked pretty...good, but then again...it just looked like cuts to her.

Alright…moving on.

Olivia’s cuts were all done and the Ravenclaw noticed Professor’s Myer’s movements back up to the front of the class. That got her attention even before he spoke to get them all onto the next page to finish their work up. And then there was the floating bucket that dropped something on each of their desks, the first year picking it up to get a better look at it while the man started to explain what they would need next.

Months…yeah thankfully magic sped it all up.

Having not already done so, Olivia lifted her mahogany top up and flipped it over so the angles cut in the respective trunks matched up. The first year gingerly shifting it around until the two secondary cuts and flaps interlocked as best they could. Then it was a juggle as she tried to grip the two trees securely together while getting a start on the roll of grafting tape so she could wrap it as directed. It took several tries but she finally got the hang of it, applying the end to the tried over the joint and gingerly yet securely wrapping it around to cover.

Now the tougher part.

She swapped the tape for her wand from her pocket and ran the spell incantation over and over in her head a few times. Jungo Arborem… Jungo Arborem … Jungo Arborem. When she felt satisfied there was only one thing left to do. “Ju-go Arborem!” she cast with all the focus and intent she could muster, her wand hand flicking at her wrist for the wand movement.

Did it work?

Moving on.

Bella moved her rootstock to the side and moved her dadap tree in front of her. She already guessed that they would be putting them together, so the next steps would be just a simple as the ones before. It was just like Professor Myers said, almost like a puzzle and she was going to make sure that it fit together perfectly. She looked over at the board to view the next picture that was showing them exactly what to do next. She paused for a moment to make sure her notes were up to date, just in case these steps were needed for a later class.

She picked up her grafting knife, having set it to the side when she wasn't using it, and carefully started to cut her dadap tree at a forty-five-degree angle. This time in the opposite way from what she did the Persian silk tree. She was a little worried that the two pieces wouldn’t fit together, but once she had finished making that cut and tested them, they fit together perfect enough.

“Awesome… it fits,” Bella muttered softly, very pleased with herself. Now all she had left to do for this part is make the tongue, which she thought was easier than making the forty-five-degree angle. Careful not to damage any buds or leaves, she measured where the tongue was on her stock tree in order to place the tongue in the right place for her scion, before making the tongue.

Did Muggles really tape the plants together and wait ages for them to stick? As Dima overlapped his tree flaps and fitted his scion to his rootstock, he couldn't help thinking the same thought that crossed his mind in Muggle Studies far too often— that was so tedious. Merlin, he was thankful for his wand.

He held the trunks in place as he struggled to break off a sufficient piece of grafting tape, quickly and surely wrapping it around the area of the cuts to hold them in place. The tongues were secure enough to keep the tree from wobbling now, especially with the added support of the firm binding he'd added, so Dmitriy figured he could get to work on the spell.

"June-go Arborem." He was fluent in an amount of other languages ample to know the latin roots of the word, finding it cool how direct the spell was. Basically amalgamating trees. That WAS what he was doing, was it not? Accurate incantation was accurate.

He knew how to flick his wrist well enough, so he went ahead and did that as he cast. "Jungo Arborem." Pause. Paaause. Were they grafted now? The adhesive strips were in the way, and he couldn't see if there was a neat joining where the slices had been made...

"Sir? How are we supposed to know if it's worked? Should I take the tape off and check, or is there another way to figure out?"

Now it was the moment of truth. Would the puzzle pieces fit? Janelle sure hoped so. Suddenly, a roll of tape was in front of her. Magic never ceased to amaze her. And Janelle had been right. There [I]was[I] a spell to make the tree pieces stick together. That was good.

First things first though. Taping before magic. Janelle took a piece of tape, tore it off and placed it on the edge of her desk. Just to be safe, she took a second piece and did the same thing. Then Janelle picked up one piece of tree and then the other. She tried to match up each edge and connected the tongues the best that she could. Holding the pieces together, Janelle looked at her new combo tree. It looked good to her. Hopefully the connection was adequate.

Janelle tore off her piece of tape and carefully wrapped it around the connected pieces. She added the second piece of tape, to make sure it would hold. The wrapping seemed sturdy enough to her this time. So now she had to perform the spell. Looking at the blackboard, Janelle copied down the incantation and wand movement. Figuring that she could handle the wand movement, she decided to practice the incantation a couple of times. "Jungo Aborem, Jungo Aborem, Jungo Aborem." Lifting her wand, Janelle gave it a flick and said, "Jungo Aborem". With the spell done, all Janelle could do was hope that it had been successul. She wanted her little tree to be healthy and grow. Only time would tell.

They should be about done now! Ariadne was surprised she'd made it this far without any major catastrophes. She'd thought Herbology would end up being as easy as getting a Potions ingredient from her mom and adding it to a brew. She never stopped to think about taking care of the actual plant. According to the professor, they only needed to perform TWO more steps, which wasn't that many at all!

She smiled in enjoyment as a roll of tape was magically distributed to her. Even though she'd grown up with magic, it still surprised her to this day. She'd already fit the two pieces of her tree together, so she took the roll of tape and began peeling away the first piece. She started the process of wrapping the tape firmly around the cut, securing it into place. When that was done, she double-checked the tape before deciding it was time to do the spell. The wand movement WAS simple, just like the professor had said. It wasn't much easier than a flick of your wrist. The only movement easier than that was a simple point.

All she really had to make sure she knew well enough was the incantation. Jungo Arborem didn't seem too hard either. She had this! Feeling pretty confident about the whole thing, Ariadne flicked her wrist toward the cut. "Jungo Arborem!" she said. She had nooooo clue if it had worked. Did she just wait it out and see if it grew or something?

Tia was busy playing catch up on notes and trying to make sure she got down everything Myers was saying in regards to grafting, including brief diagrams so when she went back later to review, her notes would actually make sense. Of course the downside was that her plant wasn't grafting itself. Which meant eventually she figured she may as well start with the grafting.

First step was to take the rootstock tree, which for herself was the honey-locust tree. Using her thumb and the distal bone of her thumb because that was about an inch, she used that to get about three inches from the soil. Now time to make the cut. It had to be precise, because of the way Myers was emphasizing it. And she couldn't make a mistake because she was a seventh year and well, it would be WASTE of a good tree if she messed up. So she had to do this carefully. Spell would definitely be easier to get it more precise, especially cause she was familiar with Diffindo. "Diffindo," she cast, gently guiding the cut to a perfect 45 degree angle. And the next cut, well she was probably better off with the grafting knife, to which she felt it in her hand for a moment before making the cut in the diagonal cut of the bottom half of the plant. She had to admit she was kind of disappointed that there was no honey seeping out of it. Why was it called a honey-locust tree anyway?

Shrugging that thought aside and making a note to do research on the etymology at a later date, Tia then picked up the mahogany plant. This was all making sense actually. Slicing it the opposite way and it would just fit perfectly like a puzzle piece. "Diffindo," she cast again, as the mahogany plant divided in two. Before making her little flap, she quickly held it up to the honey-locust plant to see how it fit before taking it away and making her straight cut into the diagonal cut.

She was making good progress! Now to just add a few more tweaks to her notes in the margins as doing the activity on the practical level, Tia realized a couple things to add to make it easier to do this on her own.
