Default Herbology Lesson 1

Nine o'clock in the morning the door to the fourth greenhouse is wide open. You enter to find that most of the plants are rearranged to make room for the newly placed medium-sized tables. On the tables you will find empty pots and name tags. There is room for up to four people to stand behind each table, all the tables face bigger table; the Professor's, where he's currently standing next to it with his arms crossed over his chest.

All you have to do is choose a table, stand behind it and you will find a small sign telling you to write your name on one of the name tags and stick it on your robes.

Oh Andrew, what a marvelous question. Ruby smiled at the professor and put her hand up.

"Plants can be very romantic, either just as gifts, like flowers that hold certain meanings, or as ingredients in love potions." That's right. Romantic plants.

Well what? It was a thing she knew.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Did he....he did. "I will NOT have the likes of you silencing me. My orders do not come from the master of shrubs." The nerve of some people. Did he think she had any obligations to listen to him? No, she dared say she most certainly did NOT. Her arms folded indignantly. He'd actually tried to silence her! She didn't think she'd be able to get over it.

And here again they had the ritual of asking a million questions. She'd grown bored of these party games. The people are this era were not descended from entertainers, this was evident.

"Plants die easily. You just have to set them on fire." That was what she knew about plants, and what she knew about people as well.

Then there was that question, it was a bit of a stupid question wasn't it? He wasn't sure why he disliked it so much, maybe because it seemed condescending, maybe because the Professor already seemed to dislike him so why not return the feeling? Or maybe it was just the fact that he had already been on edge a lot lately. But this question rubbed him the wrong way. And he was about to do something dumb as usual. "Professor, this question seems a bit silly, doesn't it? It's far too open ended and there's not really a way to answer it without feeling stupid, unless that's your goal. It's like asking people to tell you anything they know about water." He raised an eyebrow and then as an afterthought he wondered where that came from? Like what? Why was he just openly RUDE to a PROFESSOR!? He was sure this particular professor wouldn't overlook it.

NO ONE HURT ARCHIE.

Nope.

Eden had her EYES on all the meanies--Ahem, Alexa.

OY. Connor was here WHOOH. She smiled and was so happy to have friends in this class! She nudged him playfully and just...looked between the two. "Okay..Connor, this is Archie--he's in my house. He's cool." she said, you know, because Connor and Eden were TOTALLY the coolest older kids ever. She also turned to Layla, too, and eyed the blonde. "This is Archie, Layla." And Archie heard the girl's name, right? RIGHT.

Okay. Done with intro's. Was Professor Walton looking her way? Should she hide? HEr cheeks were still flushed--

CONNOR. She growled in his direction and kicked him under the table--SHOVE IT, GRYFFINDOR.

So he was talking back--THIS WAS GOOD AH. Eden just smiled lazily and rested her chin on her hand and stared....a bit before answering..."Well I'm sure it will be a good day, professor--" Yeah. She blinked a lot before realizing she had been in a TRANCE.

Nooooo Eden couldn't afford another crush--but this class. OH she would trying SO hard in this class. What did she know about plants? WELL she raised her hand quickly, still blushing like mad, and tried her best to answer in a SMART way.

"Plants are mostly green--they use the sun--you know, as food--do that photosynthesis thing--and they help make oxygen." RIght? Eden's plant knowledge was limited, Also, she wasn't even sure if ALL plants were like this. Were magical plants like this? "And flowers are pretty." That surely counted, right? "And smell nice." Why was she still talking?

Layla’s attention was drawn to the pair that had joined her, Eden and Connor. She was about to make a comment about them always being together in lessons but she was distracted by the blushy look that Eden had on her cheeks. “How do you know she’s not blushing for you?” she whispered to Connor just before the hot Professor had started the lesson. Then Eden decided to introduce her to some kid and the Blonde offered him a half-hearted smile in return for the introduction. At least she made an effort but she had stopped talking, not wanting to interrupt. It wasn’t that she cared much about the plants, she was far more interested in that face of his.

Not that anyone would know considering the straight faced ‘I’m not interested in this lesson’ look she was currently sporting. The usual look in lessons. She was at school, there were no requirements to look like you were having fun and the fifteen-year-old wouldn’t look like she was even if she was asked.

As for the question it was far too generalised to offer a specific answer and Layla wracked her brains for something that wasn’t as dull as some people were sprouting out. Something that would actually impress perhaps? Something that wasn’t as dreadful as Eden’s little monologue about how plants were green..

She raised her hand. “Humans and certain species of plant share 50% of their DNA. Which basically means we are practically related to a banana.” And some of these students certainly proved that fact to be correct. How was THAT for interesting hmm? She was glad that biology had led to something at this school because everything else she knew was just flying out the window.

And in relation to Connor’s answer? Jealous, much?

Marigold continued taking notes and was SUPER PROUD not to snort!giggle at Ruby's response. Plants were romantic, though not so much flowers as cacti. Those we romantic. And bonsai too, hey-o. She knew her plants and shrubs and bushes.

She did end up snorting at Z's answer though. Snooooooort!giggle. She didn't remember meeting any particular plant lovers in Zahra's family but maybe that was just a family secret? Y'never know.

She looked down to take more notes and found her nose directly in Z's glove. She inhaled in surprise and immediately started coughing - P.U. She leaned back away from the stinky and wrinkled her nose at the glove. She then raised an eyebrow at Zahra. Was that smell on purpose, or...?

Master of shrubs! She liked that, actually, and it earned Lex a little look of approval. And then Mr. Plants!pants got a look of approval too, because he was the Shrubbery Man. Master of all Shrubs. It sounded important.

KING OF TREES.

Dot wiggled her fingers at the man when she raised her hand. "We use all the parts of plants. Like the roots and the stems and the leafy bits and the seeds and the flowers." Not all the parts of the same plant, but still impressive.

What did Caleb know about plants? Pssh. Caleb didn't CARE, that was the problem. But he had to shout out something and make it seem like he DID want to be here, so he smiled and raised his hand.

"Plants can be used in potions and even used to aid in some spells," he explained. Actually, he might have made that bit about the spells up. He wasn't sure.

As soon as his name was on his robe, Ethan shot Josie another look and smile. Well, isn’t it wonderful? Working with your crush and such? Shortly, they were joined by Sophie. “Hey Sophs.” Ethan gave her a salute. He however wondered why she’s not with Tobias. Weird, but maybe she wanted to make more friends? Or you know…hang out with other students besides Tempus? Yeah, maybe that’s her reason.

It didn’t take long when the professor walked over back to his spot and introduced himself. Ethan nodded when he explained that he’s the new professor. He knew about Bentley leaving. He visited her in her office to thank the Herbologist for giving him an accolade, and saw that most of her things were packed. Merlin, just when he’s starting to enjoy Herbology…

...

But moving on.

Yes. What are plants, basically? Hand up. “Plants can help alleviate stress on people. It’s like…a therapy of some sort.” He then suddenly thought of Mr. Millard and his love for plants.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Samantha thought for a moment and then raised her hand.

"There is a plant called the Aloe Vera plant that is used for medicinal purposes. It assist with the relief of such ailments as sunburn. One breaks the leaf of the plant in half and rubs the "gel" onto the sunburnt skin. It cools the skin down."

She had caught sight of Ethan the moment he entered the classroom, way before he had even taken notice of her. Josie could feel her heart beat quickening as she watched him & felt like she could almost collapse the moment his eyes met hers as he made his way over towards. A small smile was seen almost immediately on her face as he stood beside her & greeted her. "H-Hi.." Her smile grew a little more before looking back towards the Professor, but then her attention was brought to a familiar face from her house & former teammate! Sophie Brown!

Josie really admired the fourth year Eagle, did she know? She only wished she could be as cool as Sophie Brown some day. Not to mention confident, Merlin was she ever confident...and proud to be herself! Her eyes widened a little bit as Sophie was making her way towards...Josie? She couldn't help but feel really shocked when Sophie had chosen to stand on the other side of the third year. As Josie was waving back to Sophie, she couldn't help but notice how they hadn't gotten the chance to ever really speak to one another outside of Quidditch practice. Hmm, perhaps that might change?

Soph smiled a big ol' grin at Josie, but she did notice a little... what was it, apprehension on the younger girl's part? She almost seemed skeptical of Sophie's presence, but the fourth year was mostly unfazed, figuring Ravenclaw's resident shy sweetheart was just being her usual shy self. She didn't need to be that way around Sophie, though, didn't she know? Once people were teammates in Quidditch, they would always be family.

As class started - don't think she didn't realize you'd ignored her, Walton - Soph flipped open her notebook and got her stuff ready to learn, and... she almost sighed a little at his question. Not because it was a silly one or anything - but because it was SO open and SO vague and there were SO MANY THINGS she wanted to say that... she didn't even know what to say at all.

She mustered up a little something, though, and raised a hand to offer up her part, "Plants are super underrated. We pass them every day, hardly giving them a second thought except outside of class, maybe, but we couldn't live without 'em, and they're a huge part in our everyday life. Medicines, food, clothing, building materials... uh, oxygen... paper... the fuel in the Muggle world... wands, o' course... like, everything in the whole world somehow comes back to plants, pretty much. We owe 'em everything, so the least we can do is learn about 'em and care for 'em to pay 'em back for all they've done for us." An inspirational answer, she knew it was.

That was close to the exact conversation her herbologist mother had with Sophie to spark her interest in plants when she was a child. Thanks, mum.

Yay, not a shiny happy people type of professor! Made it so much easier to concentrate when she wasn't being forced to be fake. Why weren't there more professors like this at Hogwarts?

Anyway, something that she knew about plants, any plant. "According to various old wives tales, if you cut a persimmon fruit in half and it has a spoon shape inside it means that it's going to snow a lot the upcoming winter." But she didn't really buy that. What if that particular fruit was just weird? An oddball, if you will. And Heather just thought of something else that wasn't disputable. "Also, the wood is used to make billiard cues and drumsticks, which is why they are so easily broken, because persimmon wood is so brittle." Yep, she may not be great with magical plants, but regular ones........

Nothing yet, well that was boring. Beverly wiggled her nose at Ruby and was about to rummage through her bag for a snack when Cutty Mordaunt came into the picture. Sorry, Rubs, her favorite Slytherin was here.

Switching her attention, Beverly flicked him a tiny piece of parchment and shot him something between a grin and a smirk. "Mordaunt." Hi.

....

And the lesson began. Well, dragon dung. She still had a thing to give to Cutty. Later.

Eyes on Professor Wally Walton. Hey, she liked that name. It was going to take some time to not expect to see the gentle, plant-lover blonde professor. What was this? Did--nooo! But yes. Beverly MISSED Bentley. Well. This was not planned.

Tell him anything about Herbology? Beverly raised her hand. "Flesh-eating plant diet's vary from meats to insects. Some may look look like they can eat an entire hippogriff when in reality they eat fairies or bugs. There are tiny plants that seem harmless but can tear off a limb." Interesting, wasn't it?

Wiggling a bit in his seat beside Alexa, Dima prepared for note taking by setting an inkwell and a sheet of parchment in front of himself. He didn't say anything to her,for he wasn't sure whatever 'Maleficent' was (disease that made people act NASTILY, maybe?) had worn off her. And if not, he did NOT want to be on the wrong side of her.

"Plants are like pants except without the L. And dirtier. Unless you don't wash," he stated matter-of-factly.

Nailed it.

Cutty was watching Sophie creep closer to Ethan. The thought of it made his blood boil as he had quite swallowed his own manufactured reality that Ethan was in fact his cousin. A strange sort of feeling of possession over the newest Mordaunt to came to the school took hold and he imagined Sophie trying to seduce him as well.

That's off limits. Parasite!

Slytherin elitism at it's finest.

The tiny speck of parchment came flying at him and he casted at it to cease it's motion before plucking it out of the midair suspension. "Wayne." He greeted back with a light smile. He was enjoying his position as Al-vizier for the female prefect of Slytherin house. Though, he'd still have to rescue the male one. He shot one more glance toward Succubus Brown & his cousin.

And Kettleburn joined them as well.

He couldn't wait for her to open her mouth and say something. Anything. Poetry!!!!!!!!!111!!!!

The litluns were in rare form this day.

Raising his own hand, Cutty contributed to the class. "One should be careful trading them on the market. Soom are more legal than others." Not dangerous, no. Legal.

GRAYSON!-- except, no 'cheer up' wasn't exactly the right word. More like 'gave hope'. Yeah. Hope. He had some of that now. Because at least he wouldn't have to go through this- horrible lesson with this horrible man and horribly kicked Beautiful Bentley out of her job- alone. BUT the worst part was that he couldn't even USE his time with Grayson to pick up tips. See, this term was supposed to be the one where Grayson was dubbed as rolemodel and taught him how to be smooth with the ladies. Ladies as in the Herbology Angel. But alas... Walton.

So instead of really replying to Grayson like he normally would've, the fourth year gave him a small nod and an even smaller, "Hi." He was just trying to pass through this lesson without disgracing Gryffindor House. And without getting yelled at. And without being told that he was doing the love thing wrong, WHICH HE WASN'T.

"For those who don't know, I'm Professor Andrew Walton, your new Herbology Professor," Was anyone going to start crying because Bentley left? eyes on you mister Zander Adair. His eyes scanned the faces and he wondered if he had to say more. Eh, probably not.

"Like you all know, in Herbology we will be studying plants. All sort of plants; both magical and mundane," If anyone didn't know that, then that was a huge probelm. "But before I begin with the plant we're going to work on for today. I'd like to ask a few questions, just to pave the way ahead." And see what's he dealing with. How basic did he have to go for some of them. "I want each one of you to tell me anything they know about plants. Anything at all. Whether it's a fact, a characteristic, a color, a shape, a myth, a SHORT story, anything you know." Did they hear the word SHORT? He didn't have all day.

And at last, the dreaded time had come. New Herbology Professor? .... Didn't he mean the Temporary Herbology Professor? 'Cause that's what he was. Temporary. Or well, at least in Zander's eyes. But still the Gryffindor listened to Walton as he spoke, still angered about their last encounter. Or upset. Wasn't sure which one yet, but it was most definitely one of the two.

Nope. He was not going to answer this question. Or any question. He just wasn't going to answer. All he needed to do was make it to the end of the class. Make Beautiful Bentley proud, wherever she was. But then, all of that changed when he heard that Slytherin girl's (Ruby's) answer. Plants can be very romantic, he nodded at that because IT WAS TRUE. He felt it. In his HEART. As gifts, like flowers that hold certain meaning- He used to give Beautiful Bentley flowers. He even had some for HER the first day back in her office. Her office that HE just took from her. Eyes at Walton.

Ah Merlin, he couldn't resist. Raising his hand into the air with a slightly annoying air of persistence around him, "When you give someone roses it's because you love them." That's what he meant when he gave them to her. "And when they accept, it's because they love you." That's what she meant, when she accepted them. "Flowers can sometimes say what the heart can't." It was true. His flowers did a lot of talking at the end of the term feast, not like anyone could actually hear it given the noise. But still. They did a lot of talking. He also crossed his arms. Because he was in love and he knew it.

Josie hadn't realized it but had watched Ethan scribble down his name on his name tag & continued to watch him place it on his robes. She was a bit startled when he looked at her to flash her a smile, almost seeming as if he were seeking approval of his name tag. Taking a moment to eye his name tag & check to see he'd spelled his name properly, her eyes met his before returning that same smile which was then followed by a nod of approval.

Once turning her attention away from Ethan & back towards the Professor, she still couldn't help but give a side glance every now & then to Sophie who was still shockingly beside her. This was really unexpected honestly, she hadn't anticipated this at all, NOT THAT SHE WAS THINKING IT WAS A BAD THING! IT WAS THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE!!! But aside from that, it was actually really comforting that she was beside her, because it made the third year think back to her first term when she & Miss Brown had played together on the BEST team ever! Merlin, she really missed it.

But hush now, the lesson had begun..

And the first question was anything that they wanted to share about plants. Josie's brain picked at an interesting myth she'd read about when she was once catching up on some ways to care for her little garden back home. Her hand soon raised waiting to be picked on & she would only speak just as she'd been chosen. "I-I'd read once about the Holly p-plant..That n-not only was i-it used by the Romans & i-is a very n-nice decoration for the holidays..B-But I h-heard that t-the Holly plant is believed to house fairies and elves who come indoors to enjoy the holiday with witches & w-wizards...O-Oh, I also heard that i-in certain areas it's used t-to repel evil.."

..Was that too much talking?

Alright, at least the war starter had a name now. "Noooo. That's Cairo." The second year responded as if it were OBVIOUS. Though the pronunciation EXACTLY the same as the name that had left the other boy's mouth earlier. "It's a different spelling." So yeah, his name wasn't a capital or anything. It was cooler, right?

But they couldn't discuss it more, because CLASS had started. What did he know about plants? The Ravenclaw raised his hand, but then another boy started calling the professor's question silly???

"I know about plants AND water!!" Kyroh said loudly hand still raised. "If you're dying in the desert and come across a cactus it can give you water and help you not die as fast." You'd still die maybe. Just not as fast. BAM. Two things he knew about.

Pausing for a moment, he watched the kids, took a breath then he cleared his throat rather loudly. Quiet down, people. "Good day, everyone" Or was it going to be one?

He didn't have all day.

ooc: This lesson has officially started! =) Do not post your charrie arriving late just pretend you've been here all along. And as for the question, it's very general, there isn't one correct answer. All you need is be creative. Next post will be in like 20-ish hours.

... Kyroh, yeah, that's what he'd said. Duuuuuuhhhh. Zeke stared blankly, wondering if the boy had hit his head during the Astronomy task, but the helmets had been pretty darn good, so slim chance of that. But perhaps he'd hit his head SINCE then? ... Or... that... the spelling things. "Ahhhh..." he sounded, nodding his understanding. Right. NOT like Egypt then.

But since the lesson was underway, he too turned to face the Professor and listened.

Professor Walton seemed okay, like, he still wasn't sure what to make of the class but the dude didn't seem like the potting daisies kinda guy. So, kudos to him.

Along with his peers, Zeke too raised his hand to share some information. "Plants form carbohydrates through photosynthesis which is where WE get our carbohydrates from, y'know, plant based foods..." yeah. YEAH! Seeeeeee. He knew things. Don't ask him HOW plants did it, all he knew was the sun was involved, the rest may as well have been magic.

Stuck inside with Sirius | *Splish-Splash* | bamBAM | ☁ Spooktacular ☁

Archie beamed up at Eden with excited eyes at her hug. She was becoming a bit of an older sister to him, and he liked that. A sort of replacement at school for his cousins at home. "Hello!" he waved to her friends as she introduced them. How cool was that, having so many older people around to help him? If Herbology was anything like potions, he'd need them too. Hopefully they wouldn't mind.

The first question was open-ended though, and not to get left out, Archie raised his hand. He was a Ravenclaw - giving an answer was expected of him, was it not? "The number of spirals in the seeds of a sunflower head is a Fibonacci number, and the spacing of leaves in most plants are related to the Fibonacci numbers too." So what? He'd been reading a cool Arithmancy book last night, and the pictures looked cool.

"Good point," He nodded at the Ravenclaw. "It is indeed very important to be cautious all the time," He'd have to repeat this to make sure no one did something stupid. He glanced at her nametag. "Thanks for bringing it up, Miss Cooper," Hopefully everyone heard that!

And full of knowledge and reference to Herbology. He would like her answer, right? RIGHT? It was brilliant. She was brilliant. The professor seemed brilliant as well. At least he looked brilliant.
"True, there's always a way to deal with each plant regardless of its dangerous or weird traits." The Slytherin was optimistic in a way. Believing that any plant could be dealt with no matter what. "Good perspective, Miss Hapgood," he said.

Professor Bentley and herself had agreed that when she had left school they would go exploring together. either since she could walk that is something Angel had wanted to do.

"It's something I want to do when I'm older. in fact Professor...." Angel stopped to wiped the tears away. "I mean the last professor said that she would help me." Angel really missed Professor Bentley. "I've always loved plants and it's something I've always wanted to do." Angel said truthfully. "I'd love to see what sort of plants were high in a mountain and what sort of plants were in the Amazon rainforest." Angel has only just learned about magical plants and well she wanted to study them more as well but she'd love to go on an exploration to study the different behaviours of the plants. "Basically what I'm saying is all plants are different and to better understand them you need to study them more." Angel wondered if she had lost the Professor with her answer so she decided to give him just a short version. She had no idea if he was like Professor Bentley or not so she would have to be careful in how she phrased her answers until she knew.
Yeah, when he said a short story, he meant one of a plant or a tree or even fungi. Definitely not the girl's dreams and hopes for the future. Eh. He fought the urge to yawn and just nodded at her deciding not to interrupt. And was she …. Crying? Gryffindors were the weirdest. He was going to ignore that part. "Okay. " Oh, but the last sentence she said was good. He was glad he didn't interrupt. "Very good point," He said.

Hmm.. was the girl, okay? Was there something on his face? He was going to assume not. "You brought up correct and essential facts," He told the Ravenclaw.

Bending down slightly she pulled out some parchment and a quill from the bag at her feet and began to jot down a few notes about plants while she waited for the Professor to continue on with the lesson.

Enthusiastic, that one was. Andrew wasn't startled by the loudness but he was surprised the question generated such excitement. But it was a good thing, yeah? Unless the boy was automatically excited like that all the time. "Yes, a cactus plant can store water in its stems," he nodded at the boy who seemed to have forgotten to mention his last name on the nametag. How hard was that. "Good answer, Kyroh" felt weird. Calling students with their firstnames but he probably will get used to it.

Others that weren’t green but weren’t dead either.

"Good point. Green is indeed a common color among plants, still it doesn't mean all of them are green. There are plants of all kind of colors," He nodded.

Oookay. A weird fact that he never thought to think of. Did anyone else wonder about this? "Uh-huh. Good to know," He hoped it was interesting to someone.

"Professor, this question seems a bit silly, doesn't it? It's far too open ended and there's not really a way to answer it without feeling stupid, unless that's your goal. Why was he just openly RUDE to a PROFESSOR!? He was sure this particular professor wouldn't overlook it.
He though everything was going on all so smoothly to a place full of Gryffindors. Andrew stared at the boy. He considered his words very carefully. "None of your classmates sounded stupid so far," he said giving him a significant look, except you he wanted to add but did not. "Feel free to remain quiet if you don't have anything useful to contribute." He shrugged. MOVING ON.

It took a moment for Andrew to locate the next speaker although the boy did raise his hands. Tiny person, this one was. But interesting words he spoke. Or, well, his mother's apparently. He missed the intellectual answers. Phew. It's been like a minute or two. This Ravenclaw was thinking outside the box. Andrew approved of that. As a Herbologist and a passionate person towards the plant, Andrew liked this answer. It was also different from other answers, this wasn't picked from a book. "Thank you for sharing this with us, Miss Brown," he said to the Ravenclaw. "Very good," The facts she mentioned were correct as well.

"The process in which the plant converts the sunlight energy into chemical energy that is stored in the form of carbohydrate molecules and other chemical compounds is called photosynthesis," He paused giving it time to sink in. "This process requires carbon dioxide and water, which is why we say that a plant needs those two things to survive." Well, most plants, anyway. "It is also how a plant releases Oxygen after a series of chemical reactions," Which wasn't their topic for the day so he was going to assume that that was enough.

He'd been reading a cool Arithmancy book last night, and the pictures looked cool.
He was about to move on but one last Ravenclaw had something to say. An interesting something, too. "Very good, Mister Ogden. That is an interesting fact," he nodded at the kid.

When it seemed that no one else had anything to add, Andrew walked back to his table and leaned against its edge facing the students. "The reason behind the general question that I asked is for all of you to see how vast the studying of plants can be. There are indeed a few traits that go for many plants that we know and are actually very common, for example the color green, like Miss Mcgee mentioned." he paused before continuing. "Yet, not all plants share this particular trait, like Miss Andrews said. There are always bizarre examples. That's why we find that plants are categorized in many different ways; by colour, origin, effects, shape, size, life span , habitat, heat tolerance, abundance and so many other." Another pause to let it all sink in.

"Again, the goal behind all this is to make sure, like some of you pointed out, that when you are dealing with plants, you must keep an open mind to whatever uncommon traits you might encounter." Did they realize how important this was? He'd be able to tell soon. " If it has legs or doesn't need sunlight or if it make sounds or eats people, it doesn't mean it's not a plant. There are all sorts of plants out there." He hoped that his point was made.

Pushing himself off the table, Andrew started walking in the space between tables, "Now to support all this talk, can anyone give an example of any plant with an uncommon kind of trait? A magical or mundane plant." Was this hard? "You can use your textbook," They can't complain, now, right?!

OOC: Please give only one example about ANY kind of plant that your charrie thinks has an uncommon trait. Whether it is color, behavior, shape, smell, use, NAME…etc. You only have to mention the plant's name and the trait. Class will continue in 12/16-ish hours. c:

Ian was pleased the professor also considered his information interesting. There were lots of great (and not so great) responses given by his classmates. As he lived near the sea, most of what he knew of plants came from that type of plant. He was particularly interested in phytoplankton. He raised his hand and offered this tidbit. Phytoplankton, when they bloom in large numbers can produce some of extremely toxic substances. He wondered if that would be something useful in potions. He began to get a little lost in that thought. He should ask Professor Culloden sometime. He bet sea hags knew how to do it.

Eerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....

Way to make him feel dumb, Professsooorrrr! Zeke stared, eyes widening as the Professor dude elaborated on his what-he-thought-was-already-smart-answer. Apparently it wasn't. Booooo. He'd have taken notes, but there was just toooooo much for him to keep up with, so, he'd just stand here feeling silly. Yep.

The first year Gryffindor pulled his textbook out of his bag at his feet, and flipped it to a random page. He didn't know much of anything about plants, at all... so this was his best chance.

....

It took him a moment or two of FLIPPPPIIINNGGGG to find SOMETHING worth mentioning. Because frankly, HE was not going to be the one to point out that HONKING daffodils were weird.

Hand raised, Zeke responded. "Devils Snare, Professor." Dude asked for an example, didn't say a reason why.

Yup. Leave it to AJ to let everybody know what not to feed your plant. She was super helpful in that way. Now for the next question, AJ had a real answer for it. Her hand shot into the air. "There's the Amorphophallus titanum plant." Did she say that name right? Close enough to where the professor who dealt with plants would be able to figure it out. "Anyways it makes a really stinky flower. I mean like super stinky. It smells like death and rotting fish. It makes you throw up in your mouth a little."

The only reason that AJ knew about this particular plant was because she went to this museum type place with her family once. (Angel was a plant freak) They had this plant on display, and it was so cool. Stinky flowers. Heh.

Josie listened & scribbled down some notes on her parchment as the Professor proceeded on with the lesson & was now asking his next question. Give an example of any plant with an uncommon kind of trait? Hm...the Ravenclaw paused as her brain went through the multiple pieces of information she'd stored up there as she tried to think of a certain odd plant she'd discovered among her readings.

And it had actually worked, because there was an odd plant she had read about, but she couldn't remember the name. Taking a moment to go back into her textbook, she quickly turned page after page, until she would eventually find what she was looking for & there was the name. She soon raised her hand again, "P-Professor, there's the Mimbulus mimbletonia..A p-plant that resembles a c-cactus...but i-instead of pointy spines..i-it has b-boils on it..that a-apparently spews a Stinksap as a d-defensive m-mechanism..D-Does this count as o-odd?" It probably didn't seem odd to most of the students & Professors here, but to her she'd never experienced or seen a plant as odd as this, so it was very odd to her.

Eden glared at Connor's very sarcastic answer. Since when was Connor even mean? Connor was like...so nice. SHe KICKED him under the table and growled lowly..."Pssst--be nice--" she whispered, quickly, before turning to hear the rest of the answers.

Connor. UGH. Being mean. UUUGH.

She heard Archie's cute little answer and gave him a high-five because he was just brilliant, wasn't he? Hehe. That actually WAS an interesting fact, yeah? He was just too cute. Eden didn't think she would ever stop thinking that, either. GOSH.

Eden BEAMED. Correct AND Essential?!!?! HEAR THAT CONNOR? SHe eyed him all smugly and shifted positions in her seat so she could better see the hot professor.

AND he said her name. Her surname, SURE, but that--oh, her cheeks were burning and she rested her chin in her hands just to make sure no one would really notice--ESPECIALLY not Layla. NOOO. Nope nope. She knew she was in for like...a WEEK of tormenting from Layla, now.

Now for the weird plants. All plants were weird in their own way. But it didn't mean she didn't have to think about it. Ummm. "That one that can SNAP on people--Ummm--Venus Fly Trap!" she cried, excitedly. She smiled and thought this was a VERY good answer. "It almost looks like a big mouth and teeth--" But it wasn't teeth. Eden knew that much. Wow, plants seemed so interesting. And she had thought they were boring. Before. HMPH.

With her quill in hand Hady jotted down a few notes. When it came time for the next question Hady thought about it. She knew the names of some common plants and flowers but not many all that interesting. There was a really pretty flower she liked but it didn't actually do anything.

Chewing on her lower lip in thought she lightly tapped her quill on her knee. There was one from a book she'd looked at with her mother some time ago. What was its name again...

Tap...tap...tap...

Sundew! That's what it was called! The tapping of the quill stopped as her hand shot up into the air. "There's one called Sundew. It has a liquid on it that follows insects into thinking it's nectar and they get stuck to the plant. There's tendrils or something on the plant that close up on the insect and sting it so they can eat it." Lowering her hand to her lap she then listened to what everyone else had said.
