A blank expression appeared on his face as the Head Girl talked. Was she for real? Did he have to motivate her and give her something in return so that she would obey? UMM. no? Andrew wasn't really pleased that he'd be having a conversation with her after the lesson. Not another one. His only gain was to not disturb the lesson with the arguing and foul attitude.

"Either head to the office or it's detention in the dungeons, your call," He shrugged. Giving a detention in the first lesson, heh, not the start he would have hoped for.

Chewing on her lower lip in thought she lightly tapped her quill on her knee. There was one from a book she'd looked at with her mother some time ago. What was its name again...

Tap...tap...tap...

Sundew! That's what it was called! The tapping of the quill stopped as her hand shot up into the air. "There's one called Sundew. It has a liquid on it that follows insects into thinking it's nectar and they get stuck to the plant. There's tendrils or something on the plant that close up on the insect and sting it so they can eat it." Lowering her hand to her lap she then listened to what everyone else had said.

Phytoplankton, when they bloom in large numbers can produce some of extremely toxic substances. He wondered if that would be something useful in potions. He began to get a little lost in that thought. He should ask Professor Culloden sometime. He bet sea hags knew how to do it.

He'd have taken notes, but there was just toooooo much for him to keep up with, so, he'd just stand here feeling silly. Yep.

The first year Gryffindor pulled his textbook out of his bag at his feet, and flipped it to a random page. He didn't know much of anything about plants, at all... so this was his best chance.

....

It took him a moment or two of FLIPPPPIIINNGGGG to find SOMETHING worth mentioning. Because frankly, HE was not going to be the one to point out that HONKING daffodils were weird.

Hand raised, Zeke responded. "Devils Snare, Professor." Dude asked for an example, didn't say a reason why.

"There's the Amorphophallus titanum plant." Did she say that name right? Close enough to where the professor who dealt with plants would be able to figure it out. "Anyways it makes a really stinky flower. I mean like super stinky. It smells like death and rotting fish. It makes you throw up in your mouth a little."

The only reason that AJ knew about this particular plant was because she went to this museum type place with her family once. (Angel was a plant freak) They had this plant on display, and it was so cool. Stinky flowers. Heh.

And it had actually worked, because there was an odd plant she had read about, but she couldn't remember the name. Taking a moment to go back into her textbook, she quickly turned page after page, until she would eventually find what she was looking for & there was the name. She soon raised her hand again, "P-Professor, there's the Mimbulus mimbletonia..A p-plant that resembles a c-cactus...but i-instead of pointy spines..i-it has b-boils on it..that a-apparently spews a Stinksap as a d-defensive m-mechanism..D-Does this count as o-odd?" It probably didn't seem odd to most of the students & Professors here, but to her she'd never experienced or seen a plant as odd as this, so it was very odd to her.

Connor. UGH. Being mean. UUUGH.

She heard Archie's cute little answer and gave him a high-five because he was just brilliant, wasn't he? Hehe. That actually WAS an interesting fact, yeah? He was just too cute. Eden didn't think she would ever stop thinking that, either. GOSH.

Eden BEAMED. Correct AND Essential?!!?! HEAR THAT CONNOR? SHe eyed him all smugly and shifted positions in her seat so she could better see the hot professor.

AND he said her name. Her surname, SURE, but that--oh, her cheeks were burning and she rested her chin in her hands just to make sure no one would really notice--ESPECIALLY not Layla. NOOO. Nope nope. She knew she was in for like...a WEEK of tormenting from Layla, now.

Now for the weird plants. All plants were weird in their own way. But it didn't mean she didn't have to think about it. Ummm. "That one that can SNAP on people--Ummm--Venus Fly Trap!" she cried, excitedly. She smiled and thought this was a VERY good answer. "It almost looks like a big mouth and teeth--" But it wasn't teeth. Eden knew that much. Wow, plants seemed so interesting. And she had thought they were boring. Before. HMPH.

The next question was up. This one required more thinking. So after taking some time to do just that as well as consulting his text book, the Puffer raised a hand. "The New Zealand Tree Nettle. It is very much toxic and can kill anyone who comes in contact with it.'' What a mean plant that was.

At his NEXT question, Sophie squinted - to her, most magical plants were bizarre in their own ways, and she figured most people would touch upon those, so... she tried to think about what was perhaps abnormal of the mundane plants. A curious, thoughtful expression crossed her face and Soph raised a hand, "Dodder, sir. It's a parasitic plant that looks kinda like really stringy yellow spaghetti along the ground and wound around its host plant." It was wicked cool, really.

Acting like she was a few billywig stings short of a fizzing whizzbee, she was. Maddie might have even wanted to get to the bottom of it if the Head Girl hadn't made Kyroh uncomfortable before. NOW she had no interest in helping, she'd just enjoy the show.

As far as plants with uncommon traits, Maddie's mind immediately went to those under the flesh-eating category. She liked those best, y'see. "The Chokeberry Bush is unusual in that after luring small animals in with its scent, the bush CHOKES its prey with its branches. And then they get dragged into its mouth."

Dante thought about other things to put on his name tag as Professor Walton talked about plants some more. Dante did hear the question though.

"There is the Rainbow Eucalyptus Tree in the Philippines. It has bark that is colored like an rainbow. And it is not a prank."

So Dante knew some weird things about plants It was fun and this was a pretty weird tree.

WAIT. TOBY KNEW ONE.

Has hand flew up in the air as soon as it came to mind. They HAD one of these at his grandma's house, a part of Toby's section of the garden.

"There's this plant I love called... mimosa pudica? It's not a magical plant plant, and I think it's really interesting. Sometimes it's called things like touch-me-not, or sensitive plant, because when you touch it, the little leaflets close up super quickly and open back up a little later. That's what makes it so distinctive; it's one of those plants that responds to touch with rapid movement, a little like the Venus Fly Trap-" here, Toby nodded towards the Ravenclaw girl that had mentioned this, and smiled at her "-but more as a defence mechanism than trap and kill."

Okay. Cool. He was done speaking now.

Angel looked at the Professor and raised her had. "There's the Whomping Willow... that can kill you if you let it hit you over and over again, basically if you get too close it will go on the offensive." Angel wondered where such a plant came from she had meant to ask the Professor that and then she remember something that she has meant to ask him. "Sir is the Whomping Willow a boy or girl? I was trying to figure it out a few days back." Angel hoped the Professor didn't mind the question it just was confusing.

Alright, couldn't pick Devil's Snare, couldn't pick... The Chokeberry Bush? That was a weird one. Turning his head he blinked over at Maddie. Yeah, if they weren't best friends he'd make a note not to MESS with her.

Looking through the book again he landed on one that sounded interesting and just as he raised his hand Jasmine's voice rang through the greenhouse, stating the exact plant he wanted to name. That was alright though. "Like Jasmine said Sir. Gillyweed. But not because of everything she said, but because it's slimy. Slimy plants are weird." Ew.

A weird sensation swept through the fifth year. Something he couldn't quite place but he was SURE it was something along the lines of........ concern?

Oh jeez. Oh man. If he was going SOFT.

But really. What was going on? Who was messing with his peeps? Were they asking to be hexed into another century?

Before he could do more than furrow his eyebrows at the Gryffindor, the voice of Walton had reached his ears and so, reluctantly, Whitty turned his attention towards the man. Plants with an uncommon trait? He wasn't even going to TRY to think of one off the top of his head. Not when he wanted a GOOD one. Instead, he flipped open his textbook and began searching and scanning the various pieces of text.

Didn't have to look far, it seemed. Not bothering to look further into the book, "The Alder Tree is a water loving wand tree BUT it can catch fire and burn easily too. Fire and water are opposites but they live in one tree, in a way. Unusual." The symbolism? Something that somebody had said about thinking outside the box -- probably Romanos or Culloden or someone else he listened to -- came back to him as he read that one sentence. Strength and determination to fight negative spirits?

............

Yeah, whatever. He had nothing else to add.

Weird plants, weird plants....

"I like pumpkins. They aren't really all that weird, I guess, but I like them. I think you should grow one big enough for me to have a clubhouse in, or a snog hole, things like that."

Zahra tried to switch her stink nasty gloves with Beverly's. Because hehe.

But okay. Okay. She could answer this. Her hand went up. "Gravity resistant trees can float, so that's cool." Had anyone else said that because she honestly hadn't been listening. At all.

There we go. No distractions. Hand up.

"There is Dittany, it has healing powers." It came in handy.

Andrew nodded at all the examples. Some were more interesting than others but they all were good, in a way. It helped the Herbologist know what the students considered weird. Some traits were perfectly normal to him but it didn't seem to be the same case for some. Like pumpkins? Oh, well, opinions. As long as the lesson wasn't being interrupted or disturbed he'd roll with it. And what about the allergy, was the Banner girl asking him? Didn't seem like it. She probably was genuinely wondering? Moving on.

What surprised him, though, was not hearing anyone mention a certain plant. The one that they were actually going to work on today. So Walton decided it was enough examples, if someone was going to mention it, they would have already. So, he'd ask them about it.

Clearing his throat, the man walked back to his table and stood behind it this time. "Now, it's time to move on to what we're actually going to be working on in this lesson. I felt that that introduction was necessary because the plant we'll be working on today isn't what we call a regular kind of plant with leaves, stems, roots and twigs. I'm sure many of you are familiar with its name and appearance though." Or he hoped so, since no one mentioned it which he found odd. But he probably misjudged the popularity of this plant or the level of weirdness. Maybe.

"Does anyone know anything about the Bouncing Bulbs?" He asked reaching out UNDER his table and holding up a purple-ish bulb-like plant with green leaves sticking out at the top. He obviously knocked this one out beforehand. And , yup, he had things under his table.
