History of Magic Lesson One - Near the Forbidden Forest
At a clearing near the edge of the Forbidden Forest there are three rather large campfires spread out circularly in a moderately wide berth. Once you join the rest of your class, you will find Professor McCormack waiting for you in the center along with several large boxes on the ground next to him. There is not enough room for everyone to join him in the center of the circle so he will prompt you to stand outside the fires and wait for the rest of the class to assemble before he resumes. He does expect you to be careful while you wait and there are magical enchantments placed around the fires to ensure that. For now.

Okay so twice he didn't get it to work.. He had to do it this time right? He looked around and saw the others already starting on their s'mores. If they could do it so could he. He wasn't going to fail in front of any of them. Nope there was no way he would fail. Stalking over he picked up another doll and made his way back to the fire. As he walked to the fire he smelled the hotdogs and his focus went hunger and how he really wanted food. This needed to hurry up so he could have something to eat.
What if he never got this spell to work. He'd never get the s'mores it was time to do this. Putting his wand up, circle motion, flick of the wrist "GlaIncendia" He looked at the fire again and hesitated before putting the doll into the flames. It sat there for a moment just enough to give the lion hope before green flames and burning started. "Really" He kicked towards the fire. "Stupid spell" he muttered.
Turning he looked for the professor, "What if it never works?" He wanted s'mores and hotdogs and was sick of this spell anyway.
By the fifth time she repeated the wand movement, Beverly felt a lot more confident. The incantation, she had that down as long as her voice didn't tremble. Other than that, she was ready to attempt the Fire-Freezing charm once more.
With the effigy doll in her left hand and her wand in her right, Beverly said, "GlaIncendia!" followed by the wand movement. Her voice didn't break and her hand didn't shake. This was all a good sign. Also, she managed to concentrate better on the results she wanted.
Nothing changed in the wave of flames. Beverly glanced down at the effigy doll. Better it than her, so in it goes. Dangling the doll by its arm above the fire, the third year released, dropping it in.
A slow, sneaky grin stretched her lips. The doll remained the same color, which meant it wasn't burning, which MEANT she'd succeeded. SWEET. Daring to touch the flames, Beverly reached for the doll, unscathed, only feeling a ticklish sensation as the flames lapped her arm. SUCCESS.
INNER BEAM.
Turning on her heels, she deposited the effigy doll back in its box and headed toward the food. She earned S'mores for hard and successful work. :3

Having completed the spell and feeling reasonably confident, the Slytherin watched the doll intently, waiting to see whether it would change colour and start burning away. But as he squinted through the flames, Terry was ecstatic to see that it had retained that white colour. So it had worked, just as he had expected. Well that went extremely well.
He took a deep breath and cautiously reached into the flames, only feeling a very light warm prickle against his skin as he did so. He took hold of the doll and pulled it out, inspecting it for any damage. Nope. None at all. Well he was glad to think he would survive if anything like the witch hunts happen ever again.
"Finite Incantatem" he pointed towards the fire in order to remove the spell he had put on it, using the full incantation like he would do frequently. Wouldn't be fair if he let others take the credit for his work now, would it?
So what was it they could do now? Hotdogs! Yes. That sounded like a brilliant plan. The sixteen year old was hungry, like he usually was and any lesson that involved food automatically made a much better one. He headed back to the box, placing the doll back where he found it and then picking up a hot dog or two and a metal prong to roast it over the fire.

Pleased, Caterina retrieved her doll again, enjoying the tickle of the flames which was basically the same as the way the fire-breathing potion had felt. After she got her doll and played in the fire with her fingers for probably a minute too long, Cat cast at the fire again, putting the spell out. Now she was definitely NOT putting her fingers back in there.
She returned to stand near Mo and tilted her head at his doll. "Want to make me a s'more?" Priorities.

Even though Caleb was pretty sure he had this spell down pat after a few successful tries, practice made perfect, right? Might as well do it a few more times, just to be on the safe side.
"GlaIncendia!" he exclaimed, pointing at the fire after he did the circular motion. Without a single thought he tossed the doll in the fire again and BAM! No flames! He reached in without even flinching and took the doll from the flames, grinning when he felt just a slight tickle on his hand.

Toby... Toby left the effigy alone. In the flames. Obviously the spell hadn't worked, so Toby wasn't going after it. Nope. Not reaching his hand into a burning flame while there was still a massive pile of weird creepy dolls to be thrown into the fires.
After grabbing another effigy thing, Tobias waited until he saw an opening at one of the three fires and darted over to it while there was still a space. Well... 'dart' may be a strong word. He sort of............. meandered. Slow bones, y'know. It was the effect of the cold, that was all.
Now standing in front of the fire, Tobias caught sight of the FOOD that the finished students were eating. He didn't eat hot dogs but S'MORES? He could at LEAST had some of those. Yeeeeah. If that wasn't an incentive, Toby didn't know what was. He stared hungrily over for just a moment more, before turning to face the fire.
In the zone.
C'mon.
C'MON.
Wand pointed upwards again, Tobias moved it in a tight circle and gave a FLICK towards the flame again. "GlaIncendia!" he said enthusiastically, imagining the flames to feel like they were warm and kinda tickly. Which wasn't hard, because he just had to remember potions. Ah yes, an easy reference.
Again, no difference, which was to be expected, but this time Toby didn't even wait before throwing the effigy onto the fire, half expecting it to change colour.
................. was it going to change colour?
The doll was still white, but Toby kept watching it, not quite willing to stick his hand in and retrieve it unless the spell somehow broke or something while his hand was in the flames. So he waited. And squinted. And waited.

Yeah. Flame freezing stuffs. Marigold grinned as she took a doll thing, though they were creeeeeepy. Ew ew ew creepy doll things. She decided she would practice the incantation first, before throwing the doll in the fire and hoping for the best, yeah?
"Galci - no, glacius - that's not right!" Marigold breathed slowly before trying again. "GlaIncendia!" Theeeere you go. She muttered the incantation a few more times before moving to the wand movement.
She held her wand upwards before rotating her wrist. It cracked a couple times, which was strange, but she then flicked the wand.

She eyed her brother and Adi not too far away then strolled a little closer. "Hey, boys," she said. She accidentally brushed her shoulder against Adi as she stepped up to them, but she didn't notice. She then went about practicing the spell. Not with the doll, of course. "GlaIncendia," she said, getting a feel for the incantation. "GlaIncendia."
Well, the wording wasn't too hard at least. "GlaIncendia," she said again. She eyed the fire and the ingredients for making s'mores. Now she was just hungry. Maybe if she hurried, she'd get through in time to eat some.
Adi turned at the sound of Sophie's voice and as he gently hit her shoulder. "Opps. Sorry,'' he said. "What's up, Sophie?'' He watched her as she practiced her incantation. She really was pretty, brilliant, pretty, nice, pretty...
Adi shook his head suddenly, coming out of his reverie. He really needed to stop going cuckoo whenever the Slytherin girl came around. ''You're saying it right.'' He gave her an awkward grin and a thumbs up, hoping she hadn't caught him staring. "Great. She must think I'm stupid,'' the second year thought dully.

Marigold now prepared to try and actually do the Flame Freezing part. Twisting her wrist once more - crack - she flicked her wand.
"GlaIncendia," she said, crossing her non-holding-wand-hand's fingers. After a moment, she picked up the doll - still creepy - and threw it into the fire.
...
Whoops. She blinked at the burning doll, then turned to get another one. Whooooops.
After Kace practiced the spell and wand movement he knew it was time to put it to the test. He went over to the professor to get a doll. Once he obtained it, he went back to the fire pit and was ready. He hoped the spell worked. If not it wasn't the end of the world. He knew he needed to be careful because one first year got burned.
He did the wand movement of a circular motion and then a flick of his wrist and said.."GlaIncendia!" and then he tossed the doll into the fire. Then he saw the doll burn right before his eyes. Wooopssiesss.....he smirked and shrugged. He had to try it again.
Okay........ it had been at least 20 seconds of staring into the fire and still nothing had happened to the doll. It was still the same as it was OUT of the fire. So Toby took this as a sign that the spell had, most probably, worked.
Still, it didn't feel natural to just PLUNGE his hand into any sort of flame, so Toby found himself wincing in anticipation of some sort of burn as he reached in and grabbed the doll.
It had definitely worked. No burns, no pain. Just a warm, tickling feeling. Tobias grinned, but didn't leave his arm in for very long for reasons. The Hufflepuff brought the doll out from the flames and stepped away so someone else could have a go, but not before casting a "Finite," on the flames, and undoing his spellwork.
After dumping the doll back with the others, Toby went to where the s'mores were. Ahhhh yis, food.
Lucas went over to the crate box to fetch another poor dolly to melt away in the fire. He felt a little sad, too, the dolls weren't particularly attractive but then, they were preparing for the fire..
He pointed his wand at the fire once again and tried to remember what Professor McCormack had said. EASY SPELL. Huh. Well it didn't seem like it was working a PINCH. Did it!?
He frowned and straightened his back, eyeing the fire with intensity. Gotta get his head in the game. "GlaIncendia!" Lucas said. The fire did not change but it wasn't actually supposed to visually. He pet the doll on the head, just once, and then dropped it in.
Did it work?

This time, the doll didn't crisp up, and Mo did a small victory dance. Maybe so small that no one would have noticed except for West and Cat, who were close by and knew him well enough to recognize victory when they saw it. In a bout of extreme and undeserved confidence, Mo cast the spell on his hand, once again drawing the circle and flicking toward the fire.
"GlaIncendia." Still no REAL change obvious, but Mo plunged his hand into the fire to retrieve his doll. Oh, hmm... that definitely tickled. Why were the professors all so bent on making him believe that being on fire was a pleasant experience?
"You get the marshmallows, and I'll get the chocolate and biscuits?" Mo turned to West, holding out his doll as proof.

Alright time to try the spell again. He was determined to make the spell work. He got the spell right...he just needed to more more confident with his wand movements. He practiced the wand movement and did the circular motion with his wrist and then a flick upward. He got it down after a few times. "GlaIncendia.....GlaIncendia....GlaIncendia.."he repeated in his head.
Now to go retrieve his doll again. He got another one and hoped he wouldn't burn it this time. He did the wand movement with a circular motion and a flick upward and then concentrated and said, "GlaIncendia!" and then he flick it into the fire and it...WORKED!
Kace did a little victory dance. He smiled and was proud of himself. Now onto retrieving his doll from the fire.
.... And she frowned when heard a little girl nearby say that she wanted ice. Was she okay? Did she injure herself? Delilah walked over to Braith and the little girl, the frown deepening on her face. "Uh professor, is she okay?" She asked, watching him dab some paste on her palm.

That was nice of the girl to be concerned. Gwen held up her pasty hand. "I'm much better. Thanks." Back to the "try again" part. Gwen retrieved a new doll, this one was so charred she wouldn't be able to tell if the spell was working at all.
"GlaIncendia," she tried again. She had learned that half of magic was intent, so this time she really poured her intention to make the flames not burn into the words. Because after that burn, she really didn't want the flames to be hot anymore. Circular motion and flick. "Your turn," she muttered to the doll-thing tossing it into the flames.
Once the burn paste was applied to Miss Jensen's hand, Braith was more than confident that she could try again with the pain quickly drawn away. Sometimes students had to learn a more difficult way, but the spell wasn't too hard and now that she was aware of what could happen, the girl could regain her focus. He only hoped that her own confidence wasn't shaken. "Not a problem," he grinned at the girl, then glanced over at Miss Starr as she showed her concern. "Oh, she'll be fine," he nodded at her then at Miss Jensen as she affirmed his statement. "Burn paste works wonders." Healed already, yeah?
He stood close by, waiting for her to acquire a new doll to attempt the spell again, and watching to make sure she didn't need any more assistance. Ah, yes, her spell was successful, he noticed as her doll stayed white. "Nice work, Miss Jensen," he smiled approvingly at her. But she didn't want to touch the flames to see? He supposed he could understand the once bitten, twice shy way of thinking.

"Professor? Dose this spell have to be used on just fire? Or could we use it on other things? I ask because I thought that the witches who burned put the charm over themselves before being taken to the fire?"
His hot dog was sufficiently cooked and it looked like students were progressing nicely, so Braith turned his attention away just for a moment to look to see if he remembered to bring the buns and condiments. Oh yes, there they were at the bottom of one of the boxes. He pulled out a bun to house his hot dog and topped it off with a line of mustard, then became aware of young Mr. Tillstorm at his side as he picked up an effigy doll for practice.
Hm. Good question. He was actually surprised that no one else had brought that up earlier. "This particular charm is only to be used on fire, yes," he nodded thoughtfully at the boy. "There is a variation on the spell that encompasses one's body but I'm not going to teach that one today. This spell is much easier tested with the effigy dolls to make sure it was cast properly before immersing any body parts." He was nervous enough about making sure there were no injuries in class due to the young age of some of the students. Braith thought that was the best option having mixed ages to instruct and would have considered it for some of the older ones. But he could just see someone walking into the fire thinking their body was protected if it was improperly cast.

At least that's what the Professor's doll had looked like after he had demonstrated for the class.
Satisfied with his work, Tag left the doll there. Was he supposed to leave it in there? Well, the world will never know. Hopefully Professor hadn't seen him. Actually, to Tag, this class hadn't been boring, at all. Go figure.
Anyway, he went over to the boxes near McCormack, grabbed some crackers, chocolate and marshmallows. Grabbing one of the metal sticks Tag started to poke it into the marshmallow and slowly roasted it to a crisp color, then stacked the chocolate and other graham cracker on top of it, then began to enjoy his treat. Could they have more then one? "Excellent lesson, Professor." Tag said to McCormack, facing him after he had finished his bite.
After correcting the pronunciation of the incantation for Mr. Kildare, Braith took a moment to watch just to make sure he had the words down and could properly cast it. Good, good.. he spoke the words correctly and the Professor watched, chomping on his hot dog, as the boy cast the spell and tossed the doll in. M'hmm and the doll stayed white. Braith gave an approving smirk and a thumbs up to the boy as he his mouth was too full to really say much. Taking the last bite of his hot dog, he glanced over at the boy again as he worked on a s'more and heard his words. "Glad you enjoyed it, Mr. Kildare," he grinned at him. "Nice work in class today." Insightful answers and decent spellwork.

A sing-along? Braith shrugged. "Sure, if you want, once everyone is finished. Though I will be ending class soon." He didn't care much either way if that's what students wanted to do, though it wasn't exactly conducive to casting spells so it would have to wait until everyone had sufficiently practiced. And once class was ended he did intend on extinguishing fires, so small window there...

Still keeping a watchful eye on the class, Braith was noting how well most of them were doing with the spell. And no further injuries to speak of so far either. Was Mr. Maroon having a bit of trouble though? He looked over at the boy as his effigy doll burned and thought over the question. really, this wasn't a difficult spell and figured the boy should get it after a few tries at least. Though the frustration in his voice told him that he did make several attempts. From what he had witnessed the boy had the wand motion and incantation down, it was probably more of a concentration issue, which was always made difficult by frustration.
"Certainly not the end of the world if it just doesn't happen," he said, trying for an encouraging smile. "Tell you what.. why don't you go make yourself a snack then give it another try," he said, gesturing to the campfire snacks. "Then I'll help you out if you need it." Maybe a few minutes to relax would help the kid to refocus.

He was looking at the fire and really thinking about using his hand even if the dolls kept burning so he wouldn't feel stupid getting another doll. Smelling the food he was starting to just say screw it and go get something when he heard someone speak. Not thinking anyone was really talking to him he kept moving through different thoughts in his head until he realized it really was someone talking to him. He glanced up to see the professor standing near him. Not the end of the world. He was Bart this shouldn't be so hard. "It will happen, you don't think I can do it can you." Big surprise someone thought he would just screw up. He grumbled was going to get another doll to show him when the man kept talking.
He looked over towards the food and was torn. He wanted to prove he could do the spell, but he wanted food too. "I'm not giving up, because I can do this I'm just.. ahh liking to see the dolls burn." Yep that was his excuse why he wasn't getting the spell, but why he really wasn't getting it Bart wasn't sure. He sighed a bit and went to the box with food and grabbed a hotdog and stuff to make S'mores.
Making them he sat there sulking and annoyed eating. He would get this and show that he could. People weren't going to think he failed. No way Bart did not fail.
*Once he had gotten the spell and wand movements right he pointed his wand to the fire and said.*
"GlaIncendia!"
*The fire still looked like... Well it still looked like fire. Looking down at the little white doll Romulus chucked him into the fire.*
"Good luck Roger."
*Walking over to the fire he looked in and saw that Roger was still there. No green burning or anything. With a quick move he stuck his hand in the fire and pulled the white doll out.*
"Cool."
Now it was onto getting the doll from the fire. He hoped he wouldn't burn his hand. He breathed in and out and then reached into to get the doll. He didn't feel anything...i guess the spell was working? He succeeded! He smiled and then had the doll. He smiled and wondered if he could do it again.
As he got his hand and arm out, he realized his elbow from his robes got caught. His eyes widened and then he panicked. He frantically went to get his wand and then said the first spell that came to mind..."AQUAMENTI!!" and then it got out. He breathed a sigh of relief. But then his elbow was stinging really bad.
"Ermmm professor can i use some of the burn cream? My elbow got caught in the flames when i retrieved the doll..." he said holding it up while wincing.

S'mores s'mores s'mores. Mo dropped the doll into the grass at his feet and headed off to retrieve the food as instructed. Enough for Mo and West, plus some for Cat as a reward when she finished.
"Considering I burned the first one..." Mo offered helpfully, just in case West didn't get why he was excited. Total and absolute failure the first time around. It was worth noting, at least to him.
Dropping to a crouch beside the fire, Mo jabbed a marshmallow onto a skewer and held it out over the flame. "If you hold something that catches on fire, like this marshmallow, do you think heat transfer would burn you, or would the spell still protect you?"
Cutty quickly plucked out another effigy doll from the stock pile and carried it back to the fire. He stepped closer and then closer again until he was at a distance from which he could feel the warmth. He wanted someway of observing his success or failure with the charm this time.
"GlaIncendia!" Cutty spoke the incantation and the wee circles and flick accompanied. He held his palms out testing the temperature of the flame. He took another step closer and then another. It didn't feel nearly as hot as before but the final test was the effigy dolly, which Cutty flung into the fire as carelessly as before. He watched as it sat there seeming to relax as if it too felt the tingly sensation present when one reached his or her hand into the flames. The boy then left the doll to go partake in the s'mores.

Braith chuckled a bit at the boy's words. Stubborn kid, maybe, but that would be helpful in learning the spell to be persistent and insistent on getting it done correctly. "I have every confidence that you can master this spell, Mr. Maroon," he answered with a knowing smirk. Liked to see the dolls burn? That was fairly amusing, though he nodded in the boy's direction, approving of his choice to get some food first. "Let me know when you're done with your snack. I look forward to seeing what you can do." But for now, he turned his attention back to the last of the few finishing up, making sure everything was going well.

Or not.
Braith turned his head in the direction of the shouted spell. Another burn victim. "Quick thinking, Mr. Lecium," he told the boy for his water spell as he quickly went over and pulled out the burn paste. But.. how did that happen when he correctly performed the spell? "The fire shouldn't have been hot if you stuck your hand in it," he said, rather confused as to how he had gotten burned but he lifted the boy's arm anyhow and pulled back the sleeve of his robe. Scooping out a generous amount, Braith lathered on some of the burn paste onto the boy's elbow. "Good as new."
He looked around at the class. Good, nearly all of them were done so they could enjoy their snacks. Almost time to end class.

Sophie looked around and noticed that more and more of her classmates were finishing up. UGH. She really needed to get a move on. She looked toward her doll, still sitting next to her, and decided to do a few more rounds of practicing before attempting to toss the doll into the fire.
"GlaIncendia," she said again, getting an even better feel for the incantation. "GlaIncendia." Okay, well...she pretty much had the incantation down now. Time to practice the wand movement a little, and then she could hopefully move on. She really wanted a s'more.
Without saying the incantation, she raised her wand, turned it in a circle, and then flicked it. Right. That was easy as pie and a movement she'd done for lots of different spells. She had that down pat now, too, right? Yuppp.

Bart made his s'mores and flopped in the grass eating them. He sat watching everyone wondering where Brynny was. He huffed a bit still put off with not getting the spell. He wasn't a loser and he wasn't going to fail. He watched everyone else socialize and then turned his attention to the fire. The fire was so cool, it was great and he wished they could just stay out here and play with them. It was more fun than boring book stuff. Biting into his s'more he burned his tongue, but wasn't going to say anything. Nope he wouldn't whine about it.
Finishing his S'more he got up and wiped the melted marshmallow on his robes. Now back to this doll burning business. He would do this. Pulling out another doll he glanced to where the professor was, not feeling like walking clear over to where he was standing Bart just nodded, "Hey Professor History Man" He couldn't remember his name, but that would work wouldn't it? He walked closer to the fire and stuck his hand closer feeling the warmth of it.
He wanted to stick his hand in there so bad, so what if it burned a bit. That would be fine. Did he really have to use to the doll first? Watching the flames he thought over the words, GlaIncendia. As he was thinking about them he noticed that girl form the shope over the summer the one that threw jump ropes at him did the spell. This annoyed him, if she could do it that well he should be able to. He lifted his wand, did the circular motion, flicked it towards the fire, "GlaIncendia"
Now did it work. He put the doll in and watched as it stayed a doll. His eyes widened did he do it. Well of course he did. Bart got spells. Now it was time.. it was time to put his hand in. He reached in without fear of being burned. If it burned it wouldn't be that big of a deal, but it didn't. It was cool and tickled like the potion. Pulling out the doll he turned to see if Professor History man had been watching!

GlaIncedia
That was the flame freezing spell. Ben looked over his notes to see what he could have possibly done wrong and it didn't take long to finally spot it. He had left out the n in the second word which was inceNdia not incedia. Making the incantation gla-ci-al-is in-cen-di-a. The second year practiced the wording over and over again quietly before feeling ready to try it all again on the fire. This time he really wanted to get it right.
"GlaIncendia!" he cast as he made the tight twist and flick of his wrist to match up the corresponding wand movement to the spell. again there was no real change in the fire's appearance but it felt somewhat different as he tentatively moved closer. Taking a chance, Ben tossed his effigy into the flames awaiting the reaction that would come and when the doll remained white and safe he knew he had succeeded. "Yes!" The second year reaching to pull it out, pausing to let his limb feel the fire that was warm and soothing but not harmful. When he was ready, he finished pulling arm and doll out and stepped back again before casting the spell to cancel the flame freezing.
