| | | Divination Lesson One Divination Lesson One The trapdoor is open and once you climb up from the corridor below, you see that Professor Elwood is sitting at her desk ready to start the lesson. The classroom is much more normal looking than it was the last time you would have been in it and the windows were open to allow for the still somewhat comfortable breeze to fill the room.
Upon reading the board you will see that it tells you a few short instructions: Quote:
1.) Please remember to have brought a book either at random or one of your favorites.
2.) Please be seated and wait for class to begin.
OOC: Be sure to read the class rules before posting here and keep chatter to a minimum. Thank you! |

Le DRAMATIC sigh.
Another lesson, in the beginning lessons were fun and all because they were new but Abbi was never the kind to like work. Nope, not theory anyways and it was therefore with her hands in her robe pockets that the fairy made her way inside the Divination closer. She gave the teacher one of those 'sup'-nod greetings and made her way to a seat.
Plonking her "Abigail the Breeze Fairy" onto her desk the little red head looked about. Now who was here that she knew? Hmmm? Oh would you look at that!
Rodaaaa!
She gave him a big friendly wink and then went back to looking at the board.

Plus, it was just fun to do something different that she didn't get to do on a daily basis. She smiled at Professor Elwood as she entered the classroom, glad not to have tripped down the stairs or something.
Addi looked around the classroom and waved at Lux, who was already surrounded by a group of people. The younger red head still had her copy of The Hobbit so that made it harder for her to decide what book to bring. Obviously she just went with another Lord of the Rings book. She scanned the classroom once more and spotted Jun. She walked over and sat next to him. Might as well sit with a friend. "Hey Jun." She set her copy of The Fellowship of the Ring down on the table.

Head down on his desk, Jun twirled his quill around, hoping the class would be a walk in the park. Why didn't he take off this class? He would probably do better in Ancient Runes, if Lex was there to help him. Jun never understood what was going on there. He attended last year, and that was it. No more Botros for him. Ever.
About to open the book he brought and maybe read a bit, Jun heard his name and turned to the person. "Hey, red," he smiled to her. For some reason, the nickname stuck after they met at the book shop. Looking over to her book, he sank a little at the size. "You make a person feel bad for liking such a thin book," he joked.

| Mentions Abbi too. ^_^ slothyke Ooooh, Divination. The studying of... dreamy stuff. This would be good, hopefully. Donnacha beamed at the Professor as he entered the classroom through the trapdoor. She should totally throw people out if they were misbehaving. That'd make this class even better, yeah. 'Hiiii, P'fessor!' Maybe add a little bow, or something. He bowed before quickly hurrying over to a desk.
But.. waait. Was that Abbi, Abbicadabbi, winking at someone??? He gasped, that was probably not allowed with her strict no-cooties-laws. CRIMINAL. 'Abbiiiiii..!' He called out before realising that it would be no good to have an another argument about this stuff, so he beamed at his best friend and waves his dolphin encyclopaedia at her. 'Heeey. Fancy meetin you here!' Diplomacy and all that stuff, Elodie didn't like him being a big baby.

Divination was something that confused the Ravenclaw greatly...but being as her Head of House was the Divination professor, Vesper couldn't excuse not attending. So, yes. She was here!
Struggling with the trap door...that made no sense in even being there...she hefted herself up the ladder and then into the room. Professor Elwood was already there, of course, and awaiting them. "Hello." Her voice was low as she scanned the area.
Naturally, the first two people her eyes landed on were West and Alice...and really, it was not without difficulty that she didn't roll her eyes. Thankfully, she spotted a Marcus shortly after and genuinely smiled. She'd totally sit with her Captain today...if he didn't mind. Casually taking the seat next to him, Ves went ahead and pulled her book out. Where The Sidewalk Ends. A muggle book of children's peotry. Fitting, right? "Hey, Marcus. I hope you don't mind if I sit with you."

| Sorry for lateness. First week back at Uni. Gaga Mafia Monster : MURPHY : Kelvin's SS!BFAM : Roro's Evil Twin : Ravlyndor : Gopher As Professor Elwood waited for more students to arrive she sort of drifted off into a day dream. Maybe she shouldn't have left the windows open for this lesson after all? She did however come back to in time to return the various greetings directed at her, graciously except the tasty treat from her Captain, and to giggle lightly at the one girl's request to have class somewhere else next time. Silly girl, this was the Divination Classroom.
But not all the things that had happened as she sat at her desk had been kind and happy. As Callie busily made a point to smile and greet each student she heard a sort of ruckus going on and some raised voices. It took her a few moments to pinpoint the culprits but apparantly it was someone from her own House who seemed to be causing the trouble. "Miss Colbert, please. Have you not read the Divination Classroom rules? We are to treat each other with respect in here but also everywhere else at Hogwarts." She gave her a stern look and then looked to the other kids she had been talking to. "It is of no concern to you as to why your classmates have chosen certain books and you will definitely not be rude to them for their choices. I'm the Professor and I made the request. I will be taking five points from Ravenclaw to ensure you remember your manners." Really, one of her Eagles would act that way with her present?
Now to move class along. It had been postponed long enough. She shook her hands and cracked her neck to relieve some of the flustered-ness she was feeling and then stood to address the class. "Welcome everyone to Divination. I'm glad to see those of you who have taken my class before returning and happy to see many new face. I'm Professor Elwood and I hope you are all ready to take a trip into The Beyond but don't worry I will be your trusty guide. We are going to go ahead and get started now with a quick question." One they had all probably been wondering themselves since they had arrived or had seen the SNAC assignment if they were members.
She grinned at them quickly before continuing. "What do books or forms of literature have to do with Divination?" Anyone know? |

Toby had been watching the book debate over there with some interest and rising indignation on behalf of the Gryffindor boy. He wanted to say something, but knew better than to do so. The professor was right there, anyway, even if she was all floaty and dreamy right now.
But then she'd kind of stopped daydreaming and told off the Ravenclaw and everything, and that made Tobias feel a bit happier. Justice and all that, y'know?
When the lesson started and the first question was asked, Tobias sat and thought and absentmindedly thumbed at the corner of his book, flipping through all the pages in a few moments. He though about saying something to do with 'truth', because of the SNAC assignment, but settled on another idea, even though it wasn't actually an answer, and raised his hand. "I don't know," Toby said simply, and lowered his hand again. But that wasn't it, he wasn't done. "But I reckon that everything ever has something to do with Divination, somehow, so it doesn't surprise me that books have something to do with it. But maybe it's got something to do with how people say you can learn a lot from someone by knowing what they read." |

Now that the class had began, she shifted in her seat a little to get comfortable as she listened to what the Professor had to say. Honestly having no idea what literature had to do with Divination, she kept her mouth shut and instead pulled some paper out so that she could take notes. |

Books, though. The question was a fairly straightforward one, and her hand shot into the air. "I think there's a form of divination in which you can seek an answer to a question by letting a book fall open and touching a random bit of the text. It's meant to hold wisdom to your future or something." Was it called like... Bibolmancy? Wait. Wait, she knew this.
... nevermind. She didn't. Oh, well.

Nobody seemed to be answering. At least not very many of them to Gwen raised her hand tentatively, remembering the SNAC assignment. "Could we say that they all have things to do with Divination? Maybe things like our favorite books can tell us things about our personal future?" That made sense, like a bit of the book rang true in your soul because your heart knew you were going to need it? That was Gwen's best guess at least.

Sander looked at his book the moment the Professor began the lesson. He had read something about books used as a form of Divination. He had to reach deep inside his brain to come up with the method of divination.
Then he raised his hand and answered,"Professor like the others have said it can be used for Divination and to tell one's future. There's a method called Bibliomancy. One takes a book, places it on its spine while thinking of a matter or question and then letting it fall open. The person then randomly looks for a passage from the open book, using it as an omen or message about the matter or question."
There was also Rhapsodomancy which used books of poetry instead, where the same method of divination was used. However, since he had already given his answer, Sander decided to leave that for someone else to suggest.

"...." That would be a first then wouldn't it? He did shoot a smile at her though, tentative. He was really glad about it though, and would make the most of it in case this was a one off thing.
Oh and a question. West considered it but didn't bother answering since he'd pretty much addressed the whole thing in that assignment. So yeah. He had no particular need to repeat himself, the professor would know his answer if she'd read his assignment.

Ian listened to the other things the students had said, though he'd completely misses the ruckus the professor referred to as he had been engrossed in his book. He also was finding it more difficult to hear things today. It was odd, really. He couldn't hear very well from his left ear. And when he'd looked at his face in the mirror this morning (something he found himself doing more often) his face appeared to have some weathered overnight it seemed.
He raised his hand, and in a slightly louder than was required voice said, Professor, I think there is also some wisdom to be sought from books. Even great books of fiction share truth in them.

Lex was sitting quietly even while the rest of the class went off about the books they'd chosen as they waited for the Professor to begin. She didn't care to talk books with anyone and didn't know enough to participate in their little conversations either. Her book was simple and straightforward. It didn't HAVE special characters to hate or love and nothing about plot progression for her to worry about.
Her copy of 'A Compendium of Common Curses and Their Counter-Actions' sat wide open on her desk. Until they began she would be making use of this free time.
It was something of a shock to hear the Professor finally speaking and the girl looked up. Something about respect for book choices and classmates and threatening looks? Yeah, all she really cared about was Ravenclaw losing points. Go team! Her eyes fell to the line of the page she'd just gotten to again. Of course she knew the Professor was asking about books and Divination, she wasn't deaf....she just didn't know an answer. Legit. The Gryffindor had a hard time seeing how books could do much of anything.
On another note, this was an interesting spell. Occasionally she glanced back up, splitting her attention between the book and the Professor in case anything else was said.

Of course, it was a sort of awkward expression given that Professor Elwood was addressing the aggressively opinionated girl over him and the whole thing was a bit embarrassing. "Uh, thanks Professor," he mumbled. Did she have to do that in front of everyone!? It was so awkward.
Nonetheless, he did have a less embarrassing answer to share. "..well, maybe it's not your future it's going to reveal," Lucas said, because he thought that was a bit ridiculous. Actually, a lot ridiculous. "Maybe it just sort of is like a chapter of who you are. What you think like. Uh, yeah." Pun.. intended?

Caelen reached into her bag and just now pulled out her book, placing it on her lap. What did books have to do with Divination? Well she didn't have a clue. Foreshadowing maybe? Did that even make sense? Because in Caelen's mind, it didnt. Did it have something to do with your favorite book saying something about you?
The redhead had no idea, and she was pretty sure she had heard the second phrase before, so she sat back and listened to the lesson, trying to seat herself more comfortably as she did.

So, what was the link between the two? Ummm. He was not sure but Adi raised a hand, anyway. "They tell a person about what happens to someone in the future.'' Is that possible?

Bay kept quite.. he didn't know the answer.. His mother didn't teach him Divination while he was home schooled. He felt really behind in this class already, Bay slouched in his chair with his face starting to turn red. Looking around at his friends he noticed Lux grabbing parchment and taking notes.. "oh thats a great idea" he took out his own and started to write on the fresh blank page.

She honestly couldn't care less about Elwood's disappointment, or whether her comments were respectful and/or approved of. Her Head of House was hardly someone she looked up to or actually noticed much at all. It was only her second year and, in Adrienne's opinion, she may as well not have existed. So really, her chastising had no effect, however the lost of points was unexpected and definitely not well-received. Adrienne pursed her lips and crossed her arms and legs, leaning back in her seat. There was a retort on the tip of her tongue, but she didn't want to get herself in any more trouble, so she kept silent and looked annoyed, ignoring the professor's next question, directed at the class.

Well, if it meant earning more points then sure, she'd do it. Astrid raised her hand. " The books have a hidden truth and it's the reader's job to find out what truth the book has for you." Something like that. Well, not like she needed to say the correct answer. They were learning it for a reason, after all.

| curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog Caleb took out the copy of Gone with the Wind that he had brought and looked at it. He had NO idea how this muggle novel pertained to Divination. Not a bit. He could only guess, and he raised his hand. "Can you do divination with the letters?" he guessed. Like arithmancy sort of? HE DIDN'T KNOW.

Alec spun around sharply in his seat only to look at... Alice. Hulk. He was about to grab a piece of parchment and chuck it back at her -- parchment war, you know -- when West came. He smiled over at the boy, gave Alice a small, sticky-out tongue look before turning around again. Mature. And... at least it was only parchment, yeah?
Turning back to the front, he smiled over at the Professor. They were getting started, yeah? And talking about... divination... and books? Hard question was hard. Like... Bibliomancy? Alec had a small concern about that so... his hand went up in the air. "Professor? If it is Bibliomancy," Which sounded right to him. "Would it work with any book that... holds some truth behind its words? Or... are only sacred books used?"

Points taken from Ravenclaw already. And from the Head of House of all people. Not bad, not bad at all. This question was pretty vague. Nigel did agree with everyone's answers and could only think of the most obvious answer there is. "You have to 'read'"
Read the signs and all that good stuff for Divination and of course you have to read the words in books. So Yeah.

Giggle.
She got a grin though. DID you see that? Hmmm? Oh....uh...Donny did. Or did he?
Abbi blinked as her best friend called at her. "Donny..er.." She spoke in one of those 'well this is awkward' tones. The lesson was going to start soon, right? Because she SO didn't want to talk to Donny about cootie things now. Not like he said anything yet though, maybe he wouldn't. Wasn't like anything was happening anyways. Some people just looked good, was she like not allowed to appreciate people from a far?
OH! Thank Merlin! Class was starting, yay for no more awksies for now.
With a raise of hand, Abbi decided to actually answer. "Well Professor, books have stories, unless they're maths or coloring books but anyways, and life has stories too so...wellah they click because divination has to do with the future and future has to do with life." And #MakingNoSense....LikeABossSomehow

| Funny Beauty What a strange question, books and divination seem so different. Divination is mostly hypothetical where books can be anything because its written word. I am sure he does not want an answer like that. I'll try to answer the question the best I can. Oichi raised her hand and responded, "Different people like all sorts of different books. Thus what books you like may tell something about you which can be used in divination.".
