Default Divination Lesson One

Divination Lesson One

The trapdoor is open and once you climb up from the corridor below, you see that Professor Elwood is sitting at her desk ready to start the lesson. The classroom is much more normal looking than it was the last time you would have been in it and the windows were open to allow for the still somewhat comfortable breeze to fill the room.

Upon reading the board you will see that it tells you a few short instructions:
Quote:
1.) Please remember to have brought a book either at random or one of your favorites.
2.) Please be seated and wait for class to begin.
OOC: Be sure to read the class rules before posting here and keep chatter to a minimum. Thank you!

"Hi Professor," the Gryffindor greeted and slipped into his seat, digging out The Hungry Caterpillar from the depths of his bag. Was this embarrassing? Yeah. Uh. Definitely, yeah.
Seeing Lucas take a seat in front of her, Lux leaned forward and tapped him on the shoulder. "Hey, Lucas! What book you got there?" She tried to get a good look at it because she was curious. Of course she had The Hobbit out, since that was the natural reading material of her choice.

When he was asked last term to pick classes for his third year, he had no idea what classes he had wanted to do and had just picked at random. If he had of known that he was going to have to walk up so many stairs to get to the Divination classroom, he probably wouldn't have picked this particular class.

Of course those thoughts flew from his head the moment he walked into the classroom and saw the Professor. Okay, so maybe this wouldn't be such a bad class after all.

"Good day Professor." He said cheerfully as he walked by her and found himself a seat and sat down. Pulling out the book he had brought, Michael placed it on the desk in front of him and waited.

Didn't mean she couldn't bother her favorite puffers while she waited for him, though. The seventh year industriously attempted to get their attention with little scraps of parchment balled up and thrown at their heads, probably to no avail. It served as better entertainment than reading the Muggle novel she'd brought along with her anyway. Alice had gone through that thing far too many times.
Hold up.

Had she ACTUALLY saved HIM a seat? Him and not Mo? Him the boyfriend and not Mo the ex boyfriend? Truth was, West was only still taking divination for two reasons, one because Alice wanted him to, and two because it was funny and he had to carry on the family tradition and all that.

.... but really, she had saved the seat for him right? Well he was taking it no matter what. He slid into the seat next to her... honestly half waiting for her to tell him to move for Mo or something it honestly wouldn't have surprised him one little bit at this point.

And he didn't pay even a slight scrap of attention to anything else in the room. Was Elwood even here? Who cared. West didn't even look. Eyes on the girlfriend instead.

Yeahhh, Mr White! Yeah science!

Divination was an odd one. Amber quite liked it and she had this urge to believe. Magic was possible afterall, so why was Divination so implausible to so many? It was just that living in Devon, within the 'arty' community, you got so many muggle travellers visiting the area with their tarot cards and crystals and scary starey eyes and ..Amber believed those people to be nothing more than loons and frauds.

Still, she liked to keep an open mind.

Entering the classroom through a trapdoor was pretty exciting though. She was beaming as her head appeared on the other side. Up she went the rest of the way to be greeted by a fresh, cool breeze. Unexpected up here, but very welcome. "Hello, Professor." She greeted and, clutching her book, took a seat, offering a smile to the people around her.

Lucas felt a tap on his shoulder and shuffled round in his seat to be greeted by none other than the calmer-down and Squid advocate, Lux. "Heeeey!" And she'd picked the seat behind him. That was.. cutecool! Really cool. He managed to avoid going red before he slid the book over in front of her. "Don't," he warned, quietly, "make fun, before you read it. It's for kids obviously, but it was my favourite." The operative word being 'was'. It wasn't like he read this nightly or anything, but he definitely held a torch for this well-loved copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. He grinned and pointed to the cover, "There is an excellent moral to this story." And anyway, before she judged, what had she brought? His eyes fell on the thick copy of Tolkien before her and he laughed. "Okay, now I feel like a real baby," but anyway, "what do you think we're going to do with these?"

Smiling widely at him, Lux turned her attention to the book he was showing her. A children's book no less.

Why. Was. He. So. Adorable.

"I find that really sweet and endearing, bringing a book that has a special meaning to you." Curiously, she started flipping through it, looking at all the pictures as she had never read it before. "What's the moral of the story?" Seemed to be just a story about a hungry caterpillar to her, but maybe there was a deeper meaning to it that she was not getting. "You aren't a baby... And I wonder that myself. I know she had the members of the fanclub write about their favourite book though. I did mine on The Hobbit." She was really into that book at the moment.

Lucas was going to continue defending himself when he abruptly shut his mouth as she dismissed his sentiment. "Oh, thanks. Um. Thanks." Huh. That was.. nice. "It's really old," he muttered, gesturing to the curled edges and.. were those bite marks? Probably from James. He watched her, flipping through, smiling quietly to himself as he read it inwardly off by heart. "It's uh," he started, caught off guard by the question. Um. "Well he's on a path." The 2nd year realised that this was going to sound really weird but he had hyperventilated in front of this girl so she figured it wasn't going to be as weird. "To be a butterfly. And even though he doesn't know the future or whatever, he still ends up doing the right thing." And of course Lucas often worried that he was going to disappoint people but that comment he wisely kept to himself.

He desperately tried to disguise how chuffed he was that she said he wasn't a overgrown toddler for liking the book. "Have you read the rest?" Lucas knew very little about Lord of the Rings except that there was a lot of them and Orlando Bloom was an elf? "Uh, maybe they're supposed to be symbolic of our souls or something." Because that would be pretty funny. Silly. But funny.

Lux smiled as she listened to him speak. It was so cute how he got awkward and embarrassed over little things like this. He was so adorable. "Oh, so...it's like he followed his destiny without even realizing it?" Rather an interesting concept, she figured as she flipped through the remaining pages. At least this book had received a lot of love, because she could even see some bite marks on it.

She shook her head at his question. "Nope, not yet. But Ana said I could borrow her books and read them." Just like how Addi had lent her old copy of The Hobbit to her, which was the very same copy she had on her right now. "I wonder what this would say about my soul," she thought aloud curiously.

...well that was a much more apt way of putting it yeah. Lucas smiled shyly at her and nodded. "Yeah. That's.. yup." So it was COOL. The Very Hungry Caterpillar was cool and inspirational and so what if he read if EVERY Christmas morning?

Was she like really smart or something? The Gryffindor's eyes widened with a little bit of awe and little bit of envy. He just found it really hard to concentrate for that long. And the adventure was long. Some of the words, too, just didn't make any sense. "That you're adventurous," Lucas blurted out. "Maybe that you will do a lot of stuff for a shiny gold circle?" Hah. And that was where his knowledge of the Hobbit leaked up. "If you do ever start calling any of your jewellery 'precious', I'll um, I'll make sure to tell you."

The Idea Man Kori-Kins

Laura walked into the classroom with her book in hand. She was about to say good day but it wasn't. "I would say good day Professor but well it's not, you see I've found TWO grey hairs." Laura rolled her eyes, surely it wasn't possible for her to be going grey she was way too young right. "Anyway I'll go and sit down and wait for the lesson to start." Laura really wasn't looking forwards to this lesson it was going to be boring she could tell.

Terry still wasn't sure of exactly what he made of Divination. Some of it seemed a little out there and strange. But it could be seriously fun nevertheless and he always made sure to attend the lessons, even if it was for a bit of a laugh.

Entering through the trapdoor, the Slytherin was glad to see that the room was actually looking fairly normal and there was a noticeable breeze drifting through from the windows. "Hello, Professor" he greeted with a smile before heading over to his group of his friends, noticeably Alec and West, choosing to sit in the seat in front of Alec and his friend. In his backpack was a random book he had pulled out from the Library literally minutes before he had to leave for the lesson. He had been getting a little disorganised recently, something that he probably should sort out fairly quickly. There was a still a pile of textbooks under his bed which he had just left. The boy hadn't even looked at the title of the text yet, maybe it would be a pleasant surprise?

Doubt it.

"Oh, well... that is a nice moral!" It was rather interesting, even though Lux was not really.... one to like thinking people had to live in order to fulfil their destiny. She preferred to think that she was in control of hers. But that was okay, she she supposed Divination was rather interesting!

Lux started to laugh as he tried to come up with what the book said about her. "Oooh, I like to think I am adventurous, but I sure hope I don't get lured in by any pretty jewellery." She was not one to really wear it, so that much was good at least.

She wasn't late. Nope. What made you think so? Is it because the blond was pounding the floor as she headed to the classroom. Well, maybe she was a tad late. Arriving by the door, she poked in her head and let out a sigh of relief as she saw that she was NOT late. Phew. Wouldn't have been cool.

Stepping in, Cassia composed herself and regained her breath. "Good day, Professor," She greeted the woman with a smile then turned on her heels to settle in a seat.

Plopping down, the sixth year retrieved her notebook and quill and set them at the ready. Ready to begin. In case anyone was waiting for her.

"What book did you bring?"

"Quidditch through the ages." West answered, placing it on the table as he sat down. Paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaause. "Its okay if I sit here, right?" Because it wasn't like she NORMALLY sat with him or let him sit with her. So.

SUMMER FOREVER

Divination.

It wasn't that Delilah didn't like this subject but it certainly was strange and different. Maybe a little funny too.. but here she was.

"Hello, professor." Delilah gave her a small smile before heading towards one of the empty seats right in the front of the classroom. She sat down, placed her bag on the the desk and waited for class to begin.

Lucas shrugged. It meant a lot to him. His sincerity twisted into glee at her reply. Could he picture her in Indiana Jones-like get up? "Sounds awesome. A squid expedition should be first, though." DUH. Squidhugs were priority #1.

The Gryffindor's attention shifted to the older boy coming into the classroom. Ah. So this was Bay. Lucas frowned. His stomach was flipping with the feeling a little bit like a second rate toy for some weird reason. It was polite to say hello. And.. stuff. "Hullo." Hmm.

Lux started to laugh as he tried to come up with what the book said about her. "Oooh, I like to think I am adventurous, but I sure hope I don't get lured in by any pretty jewellery." She was not one to really wear it, so that much was good at least.

Noticing Bay come into the room looking for a seat, she waved in his direction. "Bay!" She wanted him to come and sit with her.

Bay heard his name being called, he looked around and spotted Cucumber. "Cucumber" he said while making his way over to her. He knew that she wanted him to sit beside or near her because thats what he preferred.

The Hobbit, read the spine of the book Adrienne was carrying, emblazoned across the black cloth binding in gold. It was hardback, and clearly both old and well-used, judging by the discolouration and the tears in the paper. It wasn't her favourite book, per se, but it was definitely one she'd enjoyed, and more importantly, one she'd brought with her to Hogwarts, since all of the ones that were scattered across her bedroom floor back home had been immediately ruled out. She took a seat near a few second years and drumming her fingers quietly on the desk. She was in a fairly good mood, actually, even though she usually wasn't ecstatic for Divination.

"Hi Professor," the Gryffindor greeted and slipped into his seat, digging out The Hungry Caterpillar from the depths of his bag. Was this embarrassing? Yeah. Uh. Definitely, yeah.
However, she couldn't help but lean forward when she saw what one of the boys in front of her had with him. "Isn't that a muggle children's book?" she said condescendingly, her tone making it clear that she thought nothing of sentiment and in fact, found the whole idea laughably ridiculous. Why would a twelve-year-old bring a book that she read once when she was maybe two? Merlin. Was this new batch of second years really that stupid?

Robin entered the classroom and instantly knew it would be one of her favourites. Any class that you had to enter through a trap door had to be a favourite, it was just a unspoken rule. She quickly relaxed in the space, it smelled like a mixture of tea leaves and the greenery from outside, the two things that reminded her of summers spent working in her grandmother's shop. Those were her favorite times. She saw a couple people she knew, but they were talking to unfamiliar faces and she was too shy to join in. Passing the professor she grinned and bowed a bit, always respectful.
"Hello professor!"
She sat at a table and rummaged in her bad, bringing out the two books she had chosen as her 'favorites' She was so bad at picking favourites, she always changed her mind or couldn't decide, like today. She decided that if the professor made her choose one, she'd pick at random. One was the book her grandmother gave her the first year she came to help out at her shop- a book about different tea leaves and medicinal herbs, and the other a book of short stories and legends from all over the world. Each were worn and dog-eared, and to pass the time until class started she decided to re-read all the marked pages in the books, she never got tired of reading them.

Lux was happy when Bay joined her. Getting up from her seat for a moment, she gave him a big brother hug. "Hello!" He knew that she liked it when he sat by her.

Returning back to her seat, her attention focused back on Lucas. "Oh, yes! Squid hugs are VERY important." She was very glad he understood that. Laughing, she heard a girl she did not know make a comment towards his choice of book. "So what if it is a children's book? It's a very nice book, and he can bring it if he wants to." She was not being mean to this girl, but she was still not happy at how she was looking at Lucas like he was a weirdo. Nor had she liked her tone of voice.

Adrienne couldn't help but look a bit smug- not only was someone being defensive, it wasn't even the guy whose reading tastes she'd insulted; it was the other second year beside him. A girl fighting a guy's battles? She could practically smell a relationship in the making. "Well sure he can bring it," she said with a slight laugh, "But don't you think it's a bit silly? Childish, perhaps?" she offered. "Immature?" She supposed that was enough synonyms, though she could easily have gone on if she'd liked.

"I mean, you don't think it's at all odd that someone old enough to be here would bring The Very Hungry Caterpillar as a favourite book?" Adrienne's voice was filled with scorn as she said the name of the picture book, which if she remembered correctly was even dumb enough to have little holes to see the food through.

Uh. They were hugging? Who was this Bay kid to her? Were they dating? Lucas didn't really know what that meant but he had heard there was lots of kissing involved. He didn't know how he felt about kissing yet but he did wonder if it felt nice.

However, Lux's attention turned back to him after greeting Bay and he grinned at her in agreement. Squid hugs WERE very important.

SPOILER!!: The Book Debate

Before he could reply though, he heard someone behind him remark about the book he'd brought. Lucas just blinked at her. Huh? While the question she'd posed was innocent, the tone she used was belittling at best.

The Gryffindor blinked.

Why was she being rude?

It was probably just as well that Lux said something because Lucas, awful with confrontations, wouldn't have said anything in reply and probably just mumbled something about it being his favourite and turned so red he overheated. He gave her a small smile. Captain Lux to the rescue.

Nonetheless, he wasn't a mute and he had feelings. "The instructions were to bring a book that meant something to you," he muttered. Lucas had never raised his voice in his life preferring to simmer behind logical reasoning and he wasn't about to start now. "But don't you think you're old enough to mind your own business?" the Lion asked her, quietly.

After all, SHE had barged into THEIR conversation. Then he crossed his arms and eyed her. Take that, Meanie.

Oh would you look at this place. Looks like a full house.

Huxley picked her way through the hodge podge that was the Divination classroom, passing her Head of House and gave her a little sickly-sweet wiggle of her fingers. And a smile of course. Sickly-sweet yes.

That all evaporated the minute her back was turned and went to look for a seat. She found one and plopped down onto it. Which alas proved a little too soft, and a bit too low. Hmm, she isnt that tall to begin with already, should she find somewhere where she can see and be seen better?

Nahhhh.

And yes she had a book. Not sure if it meant any great deal to her but it provided for fascinating reading nonetheless. And yes there she goes, picking open the page where she left off.
