Default Round One, Task Three

After having temporarily turned in your wands to one of the judges for the duration of this task, you and your partner find yourselves in a wide-open meadow with nothing over head but the dark sky. Thankfully, the night is clear, giving way to the countless stars. Unfortunately for you, the moon is new tonight, which means it is not there to illuminate your way as you slowly step further into the meadow and hear the vegetation crunch under your feet.

While stumbling around in the dark you come across a waist high boulder that has had its surface flattened to serve as a table. Upon it are a pair of muggle devices, a golden object, a single bright yellow post it with a black pen, and a red velvet bag filled with muggle coins. Be careful where you move your limbs. You wouldn't want to accidentally knock over your first clue, a number and an arrow pointing straight ahead...

follow me; everything is all right.

As you dial the last number, a deafening screech comes from the handset in your hand. Enough to cause you and your partner to become momentarily deaf. Do not worry, the effects do not last long.

Seems as though your number is missing something. Something at the beginning of your series of numbers. No, you have not missed anything with your clues. This is another test of your muggle knowledge. Just how many digits should there be for this call?

Karina watched as Mischa entered the coins into the telephone booth. He was incredibly smart for thinking of the International Telephone number, and she only hoped that he knew how to work a telephone.

She shouldn't have been concerned; Mischa knew what he was doing. They must be close to finishing now, though they really must pick up the pace; it had begun to rain and Karina was worried that there would not be enough time for them to finish. "Is it dialing?" she asked tensely glancing up at the sky.

Mischa had been expecting the phone to ring but he was definitely not expecting that deafening screech. Startled, he shoved the receiver away from his ears. "Ve're missing something with these numbers, I am sure,'' he told Karina. "Do you haff any ideas? Perhaps ve are missing the code for vhere ever ve are supposed to be calling.''

Karina searched through her memory about Muggle telephone codes... She vaguely remembered something about Country Codes from classes. "I think the 20 is a country code. If you are right about it being an international number, then it would be +20 then the following numbers," she said after a while. "Here, let me try," she gently pushed aside her partner to type in +20 00-000001 on the keypad. She raised the phone, but not quite to her ear in case the same awful screech happened again. Hopefully this would work.

Unfortunately for you, the number you are calling is not an overseas one but one in the UK, only something is missing from the beginning of your telephone number. So instead of congratulations you are met with another deafening scream.

That is a two chances gone now from your bag of coins. Figure out what digit is missing to call the area you are calling and you can dry off.

After another earsplitting screech, Misha politely took the phone back from Karina. "I haff another idea,'' he said. After inserting 40 pence into the sloth he dialed once more.

0 2000000001.

He waited impatiently, keeping the receiver away from his ears. The rain was starting to annoy him.

'Please insert the minimal fee before dialing the number to make your call.' the handset said after you dialed the correct number. Hmm, was it really 40 pence you inserted before?

But hey, at least you weren't being screeched at this time?

Minimal fee? Mischa blinked. Hadn't he inserted 60 pence? Quickly he rechecked the bag and determined he had made a mistake. Muttering at his foolishness of not checking properly, Mischa dropped another 20 pence into the sloth. Now could they get a move on with this?

An upbeat melody begins to play on the other end of the phone. A cheery tune that is lively enough to make you want to tap your feet and perhaps even sway back and forth a little. Soon there is a voice that says, "Congratulations! You have completed the task. This handset will portkey you to the grandstands in 10 .... 9 .... 8 .... 7 ...."

You and your partner best grab a hold before they count down to one or else you may find yourselves stranded in the rain.

Mischa was half expecting another loud and annoying screech but instead was pleasantly surprised at the music emitting from the receiver. They had completed the task! But what was this?

"Karina! Quickly! Hold on to the receiver. It's a portkey,'' he told his partner urgently.

Whoa, Mischa solved the rest of the task so quickly that Karina couldn't even get a chance to help. Eh, he looked capable enough anyway. She blinked out of her approving, yet watchful, gaze when he turned and yelled her name. Portkey! She glanced at the sky and made a little face; she had NO interest in getting rained on. "Coming!" she called then dashed to the receiver. Despite how close she had to get to grab it, she was most definitely not going to be left standing in the rain. She placed her hand on it and...

"...6...5...4...3...2...have a nice day! ...1"

You suddenly feel as though you are being pulled by the navel to the grandstands. Sans the entire phone booth, of course. Feel free to keep the handset as a souvenir for your efforts.
