Default DADA Lesson One

Defense Against the Dark Arts Lesson One

Upon entering the arena, it may have been a familiar sight for those who attended the first defense against the dark arts lesson last term, though slight changes were taken. The arena was exceedingly dark, windows having been closed off with dark burgundy, almost black looking, drapes that hung from ceiling to floor. Deep purple colored mats were lined perfectly from one another in the middle of floor in rows of eight while a deep red mat sat in the front of them all where Professor Medea currently was lazily sitting upon. However, one could still find their way around the room, for scattered around the edges of the arena, far away from where they all would be sitting, were a great deal of candles, both lighting portions of the walls, floors, and ceiling itself in a rather ghostly glow fashion. Candles that floated in water surrounded with the stationary ones to light up the particularly extra shiny floor were flickering, while the ceiling was lit with an orange glow from the hovering candles, most commonly seen in the Great Hall. Don't worry though. No candle wax will be dripping to the floor.

In front of each mat is a parchment already shaped into a long triangle to be easily placed in front of you to read, exactly as how they were last term. What they are for, returning students may know, but for those who don't, fret not. The Professor will say what to do eventually. So please come in and become comfortable on one of the mats. Class will be starting shortly!

OOC: Class has officially begun! Please, don't post your character arriving late, or beware the consequences.
______Just jump in with the lesson as if they've been here the whole time.

Silvia was still trying to hold the boat position, though she had to rest every few moments before continuing it. She tried to ignore the uncomfortable feeling and concentrate on what the professor was saying.

She raised her hand. "Jinxes, Hexes, and Curses are different levels of dark magic. Jinxes are the least harmful and sometimes just cause discomfort. Hexes are the middle level and cause more harm than jinxes, and Curses are the most dangerous of all three as they can sometimes be deadly."

"Professor," Sarah said from her pose in the boat position. "A jinx is the least severe, and it can be used as a prank. A hex harms more than a jinx, yet less then a curse. A curse is the most severe form of a dark arts spell. Sometimes a cause can be fatal"

They were supposed to STAY in that position? Lewis was starting to have problems breathing and his abdominal muscles were shaking already. Maybe he should have worked out more over the summer after all. Or you know, worked out at all. Up until last year he had never thought about doing that though, not on purpose anyway. But now with Quidditch last year and all these Yoga classes he regretted not having done so sooner.

Hopefully he would be able to get out of bed tomorrow morning.

His eyes went to the ceiling for a moment as he wobbled a little, trying to get into a more comfortable position somehow. Without success though. At least Sierra would be too busy to look at him or do anything too. At the professor's next question, Lewis very slowly raised his hand, biting his lower lip to keep himself from falling over. "Well, professor, a Jinx is the least...dangerous of the three-" Breeeathe! "-it's mainly used for p-pranks and things like that." Breeathe! "Hexes are a little more...effective...darker." He closed his eyes momentarily, taking another couple of deep breaths. "And curses are...just bad. Whoever casts a curse wants to harm somebody...kill even." And now could they please change positions?! Pleeease?

Sorry? Had the Professor actually decided to start the lesson? Eliza was tired of all this 'relax your mind' nonsense. "Jinxes are okay, hexes not so good, but curses are pretty bad." There.

"Actually, I encourage people to think differently. However..." she held up her hand to stop anything from being said further from the boy. No green light for that yet. "I also do encourage people to have open minds, and to actually try to see the importance of things as vell as other people's thoughts."

Hmmkay?

Alright, she had to hold in the chuckle from hearing that question. She knew most the kids here were having the same thoughts. "No, you don't." she said simply. Hear that? Hold up. "If you'd like to jog in place or do some jumping jackets instead, go right ahead."

In other words...you gotta be moving somehow.

Okay. "Most of you remembered." she smiled. Most. Some of them though...well, they all could use a refresher. "The reason I have you do yoga, for the most part, is for your mind and concentration. Plus the strengthening of your body couldn't hurt, now can it?"

Don't answer that. She knew it was hurting, but that was not what she meant.

"Why, you may ask again? Yoga is supposed to help calm the mind, right? Ve can all do that in a regular classroom." She looked around at the students. "Yet obviously you all are far from calm at the moment and having difficulty thinking or moving." Or even breathing properly. Especially with the boat position. "Vith the heightened senses from the darkened room and flowing mind, and your lack of practice vith the movement, you all are doing yoga to counter your train of thoughts. To challenge you, if you vill. Ve are merely going over review at the moment, while easy in a standard classroom, the added stationary poses makes it difficult. Our senses play a key roll in it as vell as further topics of dueling and spells, but that discussion is for another day. If you have questions about why ve are doing yoga, you can ask after the lesson."

"Vot I vould like for you to think about though, are the three categories of spells labeled Jinxes, Hexes, and Curses. Can anyone tell me the difference between these three and why they are considered dark?"

Alyssa quickly jotted down notes in her journal before putting down her quill and listening to her fellow classmates give their answers. She basically had the same understanding as most of them but still raised her hand to answer just to let the Professor know that she knew the answer too.

"Professor, the difference between the three categories of spells is that jinxes are more like playful pranks cast on a person and it only causes minor discomfort for example the Antler jinx."

"An hex is stronger than a jinx but a hex causes moderate pain and discomfort like the Densaugeo hex."

"A curse is the worst of all three categories. It is the strongest and they are mostly used in duels and battles. Anyone who casts a curse has the intention to hurt, control, cause terror or kill someone. An example besides the Unforgivable Curses, is the Sectumsempra curse. "

Belle remembered what she learned last year. She had to dig deep into her thoughts and then she remembered. "Professor isn't a jinx meant to cause discomfort and used for amusement? A curse is the most powerful of them all and is meant to inflict pain and injury on someone. A Hex is mildly stronger than a jinx and it is meant to cause pain and discomfort." She wrote that in her notes last year. She didn't know if she wanted some jinx, hex or curse examples so she let them out.

MEH.

Stupid boat position. It kept making Blue roll backwards and bang her head on the floor. Which really hurt. After untangling herself, and rubbing the back of her head, Blue scrambled back onto her mat, trying desperately to pay attention - which was seriously hard considering she was focusing on the yoga position.

Relax her mind. Okay...kinda strange.

She just wanted to to wave her wand and be able to up to Dark Arts thing-y-ma-bobs and be like 'mwhaha, in yo' face, I have a spell that will BEAT YA AND YOU WILL LOSE!!!' not now different yoga poses but if ze teacher said so then...

Blue raised her hand and fell backwards, hitting her head again. "OWWW." Pouty face. "Well, I wouldn't think a jinx is really really dark, is it? Because it's just a way of causing someone discomfort for being mean - and just away for someone to laugh at another persons discomfort...I suppose it is kinda dark then..." Blue trailed off thoughtfully. Hmmmm. "But a hex would be more darker and dangerous - a hex is where the person intends to cause another person pain but not severe or fatal pain."

A curse...what was a curse again?

"Uhm...Is a curse a mean threat to say to someone? ...'Cause I can't remember."

Maybe it was all the falling on her head.

Speaking of which, she just hit the floor...again.

OWOWOWOW.

Alex raised his hand. "Well, they're all meant to cause harm to the person the spell is being cast upon," he explained. "Which is what makes them dark. Hexes and jinxes are much less harmful than curses, although they still cause some degree of discomfort to the victim, and jinxes are often used in a joking sort of way," he added. Like the Jelly-Legs Jinx. That was more of a prank than something you'd use to cause horrible suffering.

Zhenya had a think about that question for a while. What she THOUGHT was that curses were the worst ones, like the killing curse and everything, then hexes were the second to worst ones because they were smaller than curses but they were used to cause some kind of harm, and then jinxes were trick ones but could still be used to hurt people. Was that right? She didn't know.

She tried to put her hand up and felt herself losing balance, and said "Professor is the differences the severities of them? I know curses could be the most harmful ones, followed by hexes which... are harmful but not AS harmful as curses, which can have permanent affects, and then jinxes are still harmful, but not used as seriously as hexes and curses?"

Sierra didn't necessary glare at the professor, but she did think about glaring at her. That had to amount for somewhat of the same thing, right? "Well, I know," she said, raising her hand, "but I was wondering for my own personal reasons. Would it be beneficial to me as a Quidditch player." She didn't care about others. She just wanted to know if it'd help her.

...and now they were moving on to something else--a review of hexes, jinxes, and curses.

She'd already raised her hand a second ago, so no need to do that again. "A jinx is cast for amusement others but the discomfort of the victim. The Jelly-Legs Jinx, for example. A hex is a little stronger than a jinx and still causes minor pain and discomfort. A curse, though, now that's the strong stuff. Curses are used with the intention of severely harming someone, like the Cruciatus Curse," she explained.

Violet's legs and arms collapsed from exhaustion from the boat position. Her stomach was throbbing with pain as she weakly raised up her hand. "Well, professor, all of these spells are considered dark because they cn cause harm to a person if used incorrectly and the curses are the most dangerous. There are 3 unforgivable ones which are Avada Kedavra, Crucio and the Imperius curse."

Oichi chucked as the professor said that she could jog in place, do jumping jacks. Roeally? Oichi did a light jog in place and chuckled a bit the whole time. When she heard another qestion asked she dived down and grabbed her book and fipped through the pages as she jogged and eventually found an answer, "A jinx is a spell that is meant to cause some discomfort but it can easilly be reversed. A hex causes worse discomfort and the victim has to wait for the affects to wear off, and a curse causes permanant harm to victim that cannot be reversed that is in most cases absolutely heinous", Oichi answered and getting all that out while jogging made her lose her breath a bit and Oichi slowed down to a walk as she caught her breath.

Tay raised her hand, "Professor, a jinx causes slight discomfort and the smallest of the three, a hex is the middle of the horrid order where it is also for discomfort and a curse is the the worst, where it can permantly damage or in some cases even cause... death." Taylor sighed. "They are considered dark because they have the intent on harming or killing someone."

She nodded as each of the students started giving their own words on the differences between the three categories of spells. Most of them were quite similiar to one another, but Medea expected that.

But some of them...

He put one hand down and kept jumping, leaving one up to serve as his hand for answering.

"Professor," Jumpjumpjumpjumpjump, "I don't think Jinxes and Hexes are dark, even if the intent is to do harm because otherwise," Jumpjumpjumpjump, "Couldn't you in theory say that Charms could be used darkly too? Like," Jumpjumpjumpjumpjump, "If you used a charm to hurt someone, like err... summoning a book so that it smacks someone in the face while it zooms to your hand, or that slippy one so that someone falls over and cracks their head on the ground," Jumpjumpjumpjumpjump, "Or!" He sounded almost inspired now, "A super strong sticking charm on like, a runaway bicycle thats about to go over a cliff so that they can't let go."

Jumpjumpjumpjump, "That's just what I think anyway. Corruptia Vlakh, author of Into The Dark: A practical approach to understanding and defending against dark arts and common magical attacks, says hexes are bad but not overly dangerous and have negative but short-lived effects," Jumpjumpjumpjumpjump, "And that Jinxes are worse than hexes because they tend to have more," Jumpjumpjump, "Long-lasting effects than hexes and more of them need a," Jump, "Counterjinx to make them stop." Jumpjumpjump, "And Curses are the ones that are DARK. They're the ones with BAD INTENT and Corruptia Vlakh says that the more damage and harm they do, the more negative intent is needed to," JUMP, "Cast them."

And that was what West knew about that.

JUMPJUMPJUMPJUMP.

Medea was taken aback for a moment as the young Slytherin got up and started doing jumping jackets. Quite frankly, she hadn't expected anyone to do such a thing.

Good for him!

Too much energy this one had. Though his answer was no doubt one that Medea was looking for. An in-depth look at things, outside of the box. She nodded. "There is no doubt any spell can be used for harm, Mister Odessa. Though the reasons that make a spell dark, and not the vitch or vizard, is it's general focus on harming. While almost every spell can be used for such uses, the category of spells placed in the dark arts are undeniably harmful vith their intentions. If you take a look at that summoning charm you mentioned versus say, the trip jinx, you vould more than likely pin point just which of those goes into vot category."

His enthusiam made her smile. "Corruptia Vlakh," she repeated, pausing momentarily. "Has some very good points indeed. His reversal on the opinions of jinxes and hexes are ones to not disreguard, and one that I tend to agree vith more." She was just going by the curriculum given to her though. "Perhaps ve'll take a day later on and look over his writings. Thank you for bringing that up."

"You're close, Miss Gracae." she nodded encouragingly. "A curse isn't exactly a mean threat, as in verbally I assume is vot you're talking about, but it is a great threat to those who are the victims of these spells."

"Generally, yes, I believe quidditch does help vith such things." At least, that's what she'd seen from the games she'd attended last term. "In different vays though. Yoga is more about developing the calmness of the mind, and focusing on that while also strengthening the core of the body." Which in turn, helps one sit through those long meditating sessions.

And from what she's seen, quidditch was anything but calm. "Though, I assume you're asking whether or not you have to continue vith these poses?"

----------------------

"Alright, so most of you agree the pyramid of harm..." Hehe. "Goes as follows, from jinxes, to hexes, to curses." At least that's what their book stated wasn't it? She'll just skip the examples of these spells. It seemed they all understood it anyhow.

Letting her legs drop to the floor, Medea stood up and gestured for the rest of the class to do so. "If you aren't standing yet, up up. Let's go." She waited for them all to do so. "Ve're going to be doing a pose called The Triangle. Position your feet shoulder length apart and hold out your arms in a 't' shape." She demonstrated and waited for the class to follow along. "And then reach down to your left foot with your left hand while reaching to the cieling with your right. Anyone who's jogging or doing jumping jacks, continue if you so vish to."

Pause.

"Some of your spoke of intent of spells." she said, letting her legs drop to the floor. Alright, really, enough of that pose. "So, speaking of intent, vot makes someone a dark vitch or vizard? Is it just the intent they use while casting spells? Or are there other actions at play here?"

Taylor swiftly and gracefully went into the triangle position. She was happy that she always did yoga in the morning and actually enjoy it or she probably would of been hurting badly like some of her classmates seems to be... Taylor raised her hand, "Professor, it isnt only intent but maybe power and greed in some cases... or any one who uses the dark magic...." Tay bit her lip, looking at the professor.

The Triangle
She changed poses,"It's how they use the spells on others, such as the unforgiveables, that harm others like no tomarrow." Why do we do yoga, it's SOOOO boring.

Nigel had enough of the yoga poses and now decided to do what West was doing and do jumping jacks. He now was of the idea that he hated yoga because it was so uncomfortable and still did not see the purpose of it.

He started to do the jumping jacks and answered the professors question " Um I think that when a vizard no a wizard or witch use magic with the sole purpose of causing harm and death then that would make them dark Professor".

Oh goody they were gonna move positions.

Gideon followed the professor's movements, his legs back down to the floor before he moved to stand up. Maybe things might get a little more easier since he was better at balancing on feet then on butt. Shifting to stand with his feet far enough apart, the sixth year followed the instructions and moved as the professor did. All the while listening for the next question to be raised for the lesson.

And there it was.

"The witch or wizard's desire to cause harm, danger or even death to another with no reason other then they want to do so makes them dark," he answered, supplying his opinion. It certainly was what made Grant dark.

Pushing herself up off the ground now, Kurumi attempted to get into the triangle position, stretching her legs out wide and reaching up high with her one arm. Did this already count as them raising their hands? It was sort of hard to tell, wasn't it? From Professor Romanos' position it probably looked like everyone was raising their hands, which wasn't a bad thing. She could really call on anyone she liked to answer her question.

Very tricky, professor.

"Well, professor, every action has an intention behind it...doesn't it? Unless you are under the the Imperius Curse and therefore cannot control your actions I suppose. So, I think that what makes a Dark Witch or Wizard dark is true intention of the caster. One has to want to harm others or tamper with the free will of another person." She paused for a moment to straighten her body out seeing as her back had cracked just a little after getting into this position. "If intent wasn't the defining aspect and simply performing the spell or doing bad things made you a dark wizard, then wouldn't all of Durmstrang be considered dark wizards?"

Minerva quickly stood up and put her legs shoulder width apart. She extended her arms and dropped one towards her foot while putting the other one up in the air. "Professor, I think it is based on whom the wizard is. Did this wizard do a spell because they were being threatened, using self defense.. Then no I would not call them a dark wizard, but if this wizard used these spells just to harm and just to kill then yes I would call this wizard dark." She hoped what she was saying made sense, because didn't really know how to word it the way she wanted to.

And he was somehow right, well the concentration in the mind so far. He was caught in between either the blood circulation which was explained by his mother AND the concentration of both the mind and soul. He didn't really need to further think about it though since Professor Romanos once again explained why they're doing some yoga positions during her lectures. Jonathan did smile a bit when she noticed that some of them were having difficulties in doing yoga positions.

Then she raised questions about jinxes, hexes and curses which was also part of last terms lecture. De Ja Vu for him. Jonathan has been gone half the term so going back with this is like he was under some hallucination, a repeat from lesson 1 all over again.

Raising his hand to answer the professor Jonathan managed to once again balanced himself "The three of which you just mentioned are all considered as dark magic however, it depends upon the person using it whether he/she uses it to hurt someone." well all of the spells and magic really does depend to whether how people use them, right? "A jinx is used merely for amusement. It may cause pain and possibly irritation but all in all the effects are not as complicated as hexes and as deadly as a curse" he said with a nod. "A hex is more threatening than a jinx because the effects are double. The suffering is harsher than a jinx" he added. And lastly, "Curses are the deadliest among the three. Well, for one, the effects can cause death other than the severe pain." Opening his mouth once more to answer one last thing "Which is why we learn these things in this subject. We learn how to defend ourselves with it by a counter spell"

The Triangle
Moving on.

The professor stood up and positioned herself with another yoga position. Doing the same, Jonathan dropped his hand and stood up. Stretching his arms for awhile and feet. He followed the professor's instructions with the yoga position. This one is a bit easier, it's called the triangle position. Like so, he positioned himself and formed a 't' shape like the professor did. Then he reached down enough to his left foot with his left hand and then with his free hand raised up. Does it look the same?

He doesn't really know. But he did follow the instructions clearly.

vot makes someone a dark vitch or vizard?

Jonathan wiggled his hands that was already raised and answered "One makes a dark witch or wizard when one learns about the dark arts and use them against someone, whether or not for his/her own benefits." he blinked. "There are so many reasons behind why one uses dark magic." the question is, could one really blame them for doing so? "... it may be of revenge, work, alliance, or simply for pleasure and maybe for defending of oneself" he added.

Jory watched as the Professor change position and then he imitated her. He inwardly thanked his Dad for all those training every morning since he was having no trouble with these positions.

He raised his hand. "Professor, it's how a witch or wizard uses them. It involves choice, mostly but except obviously in the case of the Imperius Curse. In both instances though, they would harm others.''

The Triangle
Narumi changed into the triangle, having some trouble with it, suprisingly enough... She answered the Professor's question I think that if they want to use magic for there own personal gain like to get rich or kill an enemy or bewitch a lover or just commit like a crime that would make someone a dark witch or wizard. But there actions could also play a roll to, because you could still do those things but have a little more tact and maybe not be considered a dark witch or wizard...

Harvey thought the question that the professor had asked them.. and when he thought that he an answer he put up his hand "Professor.. it could be intent to creat harm while casting a spell but I would have to say that its the pleasure, joy or happiness that a witch or wizard would feel upon actually greviously harming a fellow living being that could make them dark" he answered... well thats what he thought anyways.. cause no good witch or wizard would find pleasure in actually harming another living breathing being.. but there were some out there that did like the idea of casting a grevious harming spell to others.. those would maybe classed as dark witches or wizard he thought as he did the position that the professor was doing.. it was a reasonably easy one that he had done at his muggle school.. but it did feel a little strange doing it here.. but he didnt mind it at all.

Silvia let go of her legs, glad to finally be done with that yoga position. She stood up and got herself into the triangle position. Much easier than the last one. Since her hand was already in the air, she waved it a bit to signal or intent to speak. "It's not just the intent that makes someone a dark witch or wizard. Almost everyone uses a jinx or hex at some point. Sometimes they're used in dueling practice or to defend oneself, or to stop another wizard from causing harm. And sometimes students might use a jinx to prank their friends. But that doesn't mean any of them are dark witches or wizards. I think that to be considered a dark wizard you not only have to have the intent needed to cast the spell, but you also need to have a desire to cause pain, either for enjoyment or to achieve something, like money or power."
Silvia took a deep breath. It wasn't often that the quiet Ravenclaw gave such long answers.
