Upon entering the arena, it may have been a familiar sight for those who attended the first defense against the dark arts lesson last term, though slight changes were taken. The arena was exceedingly dark, windows having been closed off with dark burgundy, almost black looking, drapes that hung from ceiling to floor. Deep purple colored mats were lined perfectly from one another in the middle of floor in rows of eight while a deep red mat sat in the front of them all where Professor Medea currently was lazily sitting upon. However, one could still find their way around the room, for scattered around the edges of the arena, far away from where they all would be sitting, were a great deal of candles, both lighting portions of the walls, floors, and ceiling itself in a rather ghostly glow fashion. Candles that floated in water surrounded with the stationary ones to light up the particularly extra shiny floor were flickering, while the ceiling was lit with an orange glow from the hovering candles, most commonly seen in the Great Hall. Don't worry though. No candle wax will be dripping to the floor.
In front of each mat is a parchment already shaped into a long triangle to be easily placed in front of you to read, exactly as how they were last term. What they are for, returning students may know, but for those who don't, fret not. The Professor will say what to do eventually. So please come in and become comfortable on one of the mats. Class will be starting shortly!
OOC: Class has officially begun! Please, don't post your character arriving late, or beware the consequences. ______Just jump in with the lesson as if they've been here the whole time.

A discussion for another day though.
Stretching out her legs in front of her, Medea grinned. "Alright, if you all can move into the boat position now." She turned to the side so they could have a proper view on what to do. Probably one of the hardest for most to do. "Before we move on vith the topic of spells, Miss James had asked why ve are doing yoga. Do any of you returning students remember vot I said last term?"[/color]
The Boat
The Boat position? Pfft. One of the yoga stunts that she hated the most. Her hips gets all sore from doing it and having a sore back especially during Quidditch practices just wasn't a good thing. Albeit she sort of detested it, she can still say that it really did improve her body's flexibility plus they were in Professor Romano's class which meant they needed to do what she tells them because she was the boss that time.
Before doing the boat position, she relaxed her shoulders first, raised her hand and answered the question. "Professor, I believe you said last term that yoga not only enhances our body's complaisance and elasticity, but it also makes us wary and active while you shot questions at us when we're doing this complicated stunts..err, sort of complicated." Then, off to the boat position.....raised her legs, straightening it while her back hip started screaming in pain.
Medea nodded. "Yes, Miss Oedegaard. There is a great line between which creatures are considered dark and which are not. Ve'll cover this again in just a moment." So most of the students could remember. Crucial to remember!
She couldn't help but smile at the acromantula answers. They would no doubt have been brought up during this time. "Not quite." she said, shaking her head slightly. "Acromantulas are indeed big, and much like any other spider they are poisonous, however...the reason they are not considered dark, I vill discuss in just a moment."
Medea paused momentarily before replying. "Keep that thought in mind, Miss Potter. I discuss why a graphorn is not considered a dark creature in just a moment."
The what now?
She had to take a moment to remember just what Kaiden was talking about. "The States creature." she said, as if trying to confirm her thoughts. The Legend of the Chupacabra. "Actually, I'm not even sure if the creature has been confirmed, though if vot is said is true..."
She paused for a moment before nodding. "Yes, I suppose."
Oh? She'd been wondering when that question would come up.
"The reason, Miss James, that I am having you do yoga ties in vith why I have the room dark." Mostly dark at least. The candle light wasn't much, but it was still light. "And something I'd hope to discuss later in the lesson, however, I vill suggest one thing. Think about your senses."
Yup, just think about it. Medea would answer in full later on.

Zhenya moved into the boat position and felt her stomach muscles twitch with annoyance. Well, they would get over it. She liked yoga in this lesson, but couldn't for the life of her remember WHY they did yoga, but took a guess anyway.
"Professor, yoga helps clear the mind so that we can focus," she said, not entirely confident that was why they did yoga.

Right. They were doing yoga again this term. Setting her instant copying quill thing that her brother got her onto her paper, she attempted to get into the position.
Ooooh. Why they had to do this. "To heighten our awareness," she grinned before she wobbled badly. Putting her hand down to steady herself, she tried to focus.
Oichi's question had finally been adressed. But when she saw the yoga get more intense and look rediculous no amount reasons why was gonna make her wanna do it. "Professor do we really have to do the yoga cause I don't really like putting my body in strange positions for any reason.".

Lotus Position
Nerida went into the lotus position easily due to her mums fascination with yoga and said Is an example of a dark creature is a demeter? If so is it because it can kill someone and it takes all the good away??

Nerida moved into the boat position easily and thought for a moment and said To clear our mind so it can easily focus on the spell we are casting... She believed that was it and if it wasnt at least it was an educated guess...

B-but... noooo! It was exactly the position Nora didn't like!
Sigh.
Trying to copy professor Romanos' position, the girl raised her hand before torturing herself into the boat thingy. "It is supposed to help us focus." Supposed to, yes. It only made Nora focus on not getting too tangled in... erm... her own arms and legs. But she wasn't going to say THAT out loud, of course.

The Boat
Jonathan nodded as Professor Romanos tried explaining more about dark creatures. Quite frankly, Jonathan has quite a lengthy fascination for dark creatures. NOT that he is fan of them, it's just that when he starts reading about them, he just couldn't stop. Through how these creatures are it makes him even more curious and wants to learn more about them. Maybe she should ask more about this to Professor Romanos when class is done, yes? He would really love to learn more about this.
Moving on to the next position, Jonathan's haw dropped when he saw the professor explained it and showed it in front of them. They have done the boat position before right? This is rather hard when answering, thinking and then balancing all at the same time. Jonathan did the boat position while trying to think about what the professor had said to them last term, why they were doing yoga.
Trying to balance himself with one hand, he waved his left hand to answer. "I think it's about blood circulation in the body?" ehhh, wrong answer? Jonathan couldn't really remember to what it was. Think... think more. Well, that was one of the reason why people do yoga right? It's all because of blood circulation. HOWEVER... it could also be "uhmmm... focus and balance." he added while he quickly put back his arm back into position.
Kennedy had a weird sensation of...something. He could feel the hairs on the back of his neck standing. With a slight frown he glanced around the room. Was the roof caving in and his instincts were telling him to run? Was his hair on fire? Was something from the shadows staring at him?
His eyes wandered, but found nothing, BUT they did briefly stop on a certain Ravenclaw girl as she answered the question and he sent her a grin.

The Prefect returned his attention back to Professor Romanos, still a bit wary, and did as they were told. The boat. How he hated that position. It made his stomach muscles work overtime. He managed to lift his hand half way and said, "To have and maintain a clear mind..." He did not have a clear mind AND he preferred the lotus position.
He turned his head to Sierra when he heard something that he would very much prefer as an alternative to this. Quidditch practice. Could they do that instead?
Not that Aspen was ...
Well. No. She was totally keeping tabs on the Slytherin. This Prefect always smiled when he noticed her watching him. It was a good sign. They could work together. She gave him another little mental tally and tried to go back to paying attention. It was just so DARK and the mats and the yoga...

No. Fail.
He toppled over sideways. But his hand was still up! Or... out! Success!
"And not get in trouble I mean, for thinking something different?"
It WAS related. Because West Odessa thought this Yoga thing was DUMB. He wanted to learn how to use his wand!

Aspen cringed. Those were the kind of questions she OFTEN had. Aspen was thinking she disagreed with yoga and Dark Arts right this moment, too, and she KNEW that was where West was going. The difference was - Aspen would just think it internally.
West wanted to make it known. If she could have stopped him, she would have, but... West would be West.
Aspen was going with the theory that if she didn't move, the Professor wouldn't see her. It's not that she wasn't following directions, she just didn't like feeling vulnerable and having her legs IN THE AIR and her HANDS occupied - that was vulnerable.
And distracting.
So... quiet mouse, still mouse, FREEZE. *invisible*

Medea nodded. "For the most part, they are used for evil purposes however..." she looked out across the class. "They can be used to protect oneself. There are of course, limits on vot you're going for, but if the need arises, most people do use them for defense."
She couldn't help but smile. "Not quite, Miss Gracae." she said. "Though you may have a point there ven it comes to art." Certainly made sense to Medea.
"Not all the time, Mister Messer." she said, looking over to the Hufflepuff boy. "In most cases, a sentence to Azkaban vould be the right take of action, however, there are borderlines in which one has to take note of. Ve'll discuss that in a moment."
Glaring girl spoke?
"You no doubt have a good point, Miss Carter." she nodded slowly, thinking it over. "However, it is quite, difficult, to destroy magic, especially kinds that almost every vitch or vizard is able to create. Magic isn't an object you can throw into the fire. The objects and creatures created from the dark arts though, you can, but to completely rid the vorld of this kind of magic, one vould, ultimately, have to rid the world of the vitches and vizards themselves."
"Though, you can suppress it. Perhaps you can look into the career of the aurors if you're interested." They dealt with those things on a daily basis.
"You are right, for those who mentioned that the dark arts is mostly used to cause harm to someone in some vay, whether it be through spells, potions, creatures, or even simple objects that have been bewitched to cause fatal results to it's victims." she nodded towards the young Slytherin boy. "Though these curses can also be placed on places, in which often trained professionals are called in to break them."
"However..." she paused momentarily. "There is a fine line between someone who is considered dark and someone who is not. A few of you were kind enough to state that intent is a large factor in deciding between vot is dark and vot is not. It is crucial to see the difference between someone who is using a curse to protect his family and someone who uses a curse just to cause suffering. It is one of those topics that is difficult to label since there are so many shades of grey, but most often then none, a use of common sense can distinguish the two."
"Now," she moved around so she was sitting a little differently. "If you all can sit up straight in the lotus position, look at how I'm sitting if you don't know vot that is, and tell me an example of a dark creature you know. Also, why are they considered dark?"

All this Yoga stuff...Dylan was a little familiar with. His cousin, Jeanette, had been doing the odd positions and clarity thing for years. He'd always been a little curious about why she was so interested in something so...boring?...and had looked it up online one rainy night when there had been absolutely nothing else to do.
Yes, that was his excuse.
Laying on his stomach, he attempted to reach back and grab his ankles. After a few tries, he seemed to warm up to the awkwardness of the positioning and grasped them, pulling them up, as well as his upper body. When he felt he'd succeeded (as he couldn't very well see what he was doing or know if it was right), he answered the pretty Professor's question. "...I didn't attend last term...but I know that doing Yoga helps commit things to memory. Perhaps you practice to be able to focus on committing many spells to memory...?"

Ok the lotus position was fine with this Ravenclaw, because it was simple and he does that all the time right?
But this... boat position? Vickers' lips creased annoyingly into his cheek. Plus that question, which of course was a serving lesson to him last term, when he was all annoyed and losing balance. Has he appreciated all these calisthenics since then? No.
But has it improved his skills in DADA? Perhaps, but it still didnt take away the fact that he was incredibly, INCREDIBLY annoyed with it.
He sat on his behind with his gangly legs stretched out ahead of him, then tried to raise them together--
*PLOP* went his legs.
He huffed silently. He can do this, just focus!
Breathed in deep, raaaaaisssse those legs.
It went up inch by excruciating inch... oh yes there was that question that needed answering...
"To be able to think on our feet with clarity and still have the agility to dodge spells if necessary." at least thats what he understood from it last term.
*PLOP* goes his legs back on the floor.
Obviously he still has a loooong way to be able to do any of what he just said.

Johnathan raised a brow, Okay, that looks difficult? he thought to himself. As he quickly got into formation, forming the yoga position
"People do Yoga, in order to maintain good health." John answered, as he was actually considering using Yoga in his daily exercising routine.
Yup he was feeling the burn, sure he weight trained but he's never done yoga before. As he was in the boat position, he could feel his abs tightening and starting to burn.

Didn't people get out of the common room every once in a blue moon?!
"Professor?" she said, raising her hand. "You told us that the yoga positions help us stay focus and improves our flexibility. Wouldn't just going to Quidditch practice accomplish the same thing?" Just asking. If so, she should good and focused by now. Romanos would see that and give her a break with yoga positions, right?
"Not everyone here plays quidditch though, Miss Greingoth." she said, juuuuuuust pointing out that little fact. Not to mention Medea herself was still trying to be comfortable with ten feet off the ground.

Alright, she had to hold in the chuckle from hearing that question. She knew most the kids here were having the same thoughts. "No, you don't." she said simply. Hear that? Hold up. "If you'd like to jog in place or do some jumping jackets instead, go right ahead."
In other words...you gotta be moving somehow.
Okay. "Most of you remembered." she smiled. Most. Some of them though...well, they all could use a refresher. "The reason I have you do yoga, for the most part, is for your mind and concentration. Plus the strengthening of your body couldn't hurt, now can it?"
Don't answer that. She knew it was hurting, but that was not what she meant.
"Why, you may ask again? Yoga is supposed to help calm the mind, right? Ve can all do that in a regular classroom." She looked around at the students. "Yet obviously you all are far from calm at the moment and having difficulty thinking or moving." Or even breathing properly. Especially with the boat position. "Vith the heightened senses from the darkened room and flowing mind, and your lack of practice vith the movement, you all are doing yoga to counter your train of thoughts. To challenge you, if you vill. Ve are merely going over review at the moment, while easy in a standard classroom, the added stationary poses makes it difficult. Our senses play a key roll in it as vell as further topics of dueling and spells, but that discussion is for another day. If you have questions about why ve are doing yoga, you can ask after the lesson."
"Vot I vould like for you to think about though, are the three categories of spells labeled Jinxes, Hexes, and Curses. Can anyone tell me the difference between these three and why they are considered dark?"

Oooooh. She knew this. Indy beamed, putting her hand into the air, waving it around a little. Oh umm. She supposed that she looked a little nerdy and crazy, so as she spoke she kept her arm still. "A jinx is a spell that will cause minor discomfort for the victim, a hex is darker than a jinx as it generall causes moderate suffering for the victim, and a curse is the most bad one, as it can even cause death which is not very nice." And now she just needed to figure out why they were connected to dark magic. oooh. "And I'd say they are connected to dark magic because when a wizard uses them they obviously want to cause some harm or discomfort to the person they are using the spell on..."

Kurumi was beginning to wobble a little in this position and decided that it was time to lower her legs and instead stretched downwards towards her ankles to get into a deep stretch. Better than wobbling and falling over probably onto Daichi which would have been rather awkward. Once she was in a more balanced position, Kurumi thought over the next question and debated whether or not to offer up an answer since this was a review lesson for the most part. Still, before she could put up her filtering system, Kurumi's hand was in the air ready to answer.
"All of three types of those spells can be dark, if the caster's intent is appropriate, because they cause some sort of negative effect or harm to the target," Kurumi explained. "A jinx can be the most 'playful' of these spells, with a hex being a little more severe in consequences, a a curse being the worst." After all, casting a Bat Boogie Hex on someone as a practical joke could hardly be considered Dark Magic even if it was a hex. It was all about intent, right?

Since he was new in Hogwarts, Gary didn't know exactly why they did yoga at the classroom. Well, nevermind. It was quiet fun too learning something in different way. Besides that, from the people answers at the classroom he could conclude that Yoga could make him focusing on his mind.
The blonde guy tried to do the boat position. But the problem is.. He was too tall and had long legs that made him failed to do the position. After he had tried in many times, finally he could stay in those position. Sometimes being too tall was not comfortable for himself
Okay. Back to the lesson. Ah, another question. Gary remembered about the difference. He had learned it when he was in Salem.
"Professor." said him after he raised his hand. " A jinx is a spell that mostly used for the amusement. While curse is the worst kind of dark magic because it caused harm or even death." Right? "And Hex is darker than jinx, but not as dark as curse."
*Thud*
Okay, he only could stay at the boat position just for few minutes. Heck.

"Vot I vould like for you to think about though, are the three categories of spells labeled Jinxes, Hexes, and Curses. Can anyone tell me the difference between these three and why they are considered dark?"

Dylan was about to raise his hand...when a girl who looked...Asian? started speaking. He'd seen her in his classes...right? Her voice sounded familiar...Yea, she ALWAYS answered all the questions and generally knew everything. He remembered her...Well, and the fact that she was extremely pretty...That was sticking out in his mind.
Glancing at her robes, the Gryffindor Prefect badge glittered proudly from her chest...The Slytherin blinked. Stared at the badge some more...and then blinked again.
Was SHE the famous COOKIE GIRL he'd been hearing about around school?
Trying to get himself back on track and cursing her for breaking his focus, he made a mental note about catching up with her after class.
*is raising his hand* "I've always assumed that this area of magic was judged by their effects. A jinx would be a nuisance type spell that doesn't do any real harm. A hex would be a step up from that and could do real damage to a person if the intention to do so was there, like she said *points to Gryffie Prefect*. Then a curse would obviously be the one that causes the max amount of pain/damage...and would generally be irreversible." Rubbing the back of his neck, Dylan shrugged. "I suppose they're considered dark because they cause harm...Even though with the jinx/hex spells, that seems to be a gray area."

Hmmkay?
Hmmmmwhat?
West frowned slightly from his sideways-toppled-over position and risked a look over at Aspen. He could FEEEL his sister watching him. He could.
Did that mean the professor was open minded to his thoughts?
He opened his mouth. Closed it again. Opened it. Then squinted at the professor and closed his mouth again with an audible snap.
Still sideways.

In other words...you gotta be moving somehow.
OH HO REALLY? West IMMEDIATELY got up. Immediately. He could do those things. Those things were GOOD things.
Jumping jacks yeahhhhh! Perfect outlet for his boundless energy, really.

Wait.
Vot? What?
West blinked again, stiiiill doing jumping jacks, and tried to process what the professor meant. HE HAD LOTS OF QUESTIONS. She would so see him after the lesson. With a list. Numbered.
He put one hand down and kept jumping, leaving one up to serve as his hand for answering.
"Professor," Jumpjumpjumpjumpjump, "I don't think Jinxes and Hexes are dark, even if the intent is to do harm because otherwise," Jumpjumpjumpjump, "Couldn't you in theory say that Charms could be used darkly too? Like," Jumpjumpjumpjumpjump, "If you used a charm to hurt someone, like err... summoning a book so that it smacks someone in the face while it zooms to your hand, or that slippy one so that someone falls over and cracks their head on the ground," Jumpjumpjumpjumpjump, "Or!" He sounded almost inspired now, "A super strong sticking charm on like, a runaway bicycle thats about to go over a cliff so that they can't let go."
Jumpjumpjumpjump, "That's just what I think anyway. Corruptia Vlakh, author of Into The Dark: A practical approach to understanding and defending against dark arts and common magical attacks, says hexes are bad but not overly dangerous and have negative but short-lived effects," Jumpjumpjumpjumpjump, "And that Jinxes are worse than hexes because they tend to have more," Jumpjumpjump, "Long-lasting effects than hexes and more of them need a," Jump, "Counterjinx to make them stop." Jumpjumpjump, "And Curses are the ones that are DARK. They're the ones with BAD INTENT and Corruptia Vlakh says that the more damage and harm they do, the more negative intent is needed to," JUMP, "Cast them."
And that was what West knew about that.
JUMPJUMPJUMPJUMP.

Jinxes, Hexes, and Curses. Why did Nora have the feeling that they've discussed this... some time? "Jinxes don't cause much harm," she said with a hand in the air, "and curses are the worst, especially the three unforgivable ones." Didn't she miss anything? "The hexes, on the other hand... are somewhere in between jinxes and curses." Great explaining. She was awesome like that.

Wait? So they were still doing the boat...O_o Ella tried her best to stay in that position but it was quite difficult. She was tempted to jog in place but decided she wanted to master yoga, even if it did make her feel like a weird pretzel. As for the question, Ella raised her hand. "Professor, jinxes are considered the-erm-lightest? I mean they don't cause as much damage as hexes, which come next. Curses are the worst though and can cause some serious damage. I guess they would be considered dark because someone who seeks to harm used them."

Yup, just think about it. Medea would answer in full later on.
-----------------------
"Most of you have a good understanding of why certain creatures are considered dark." she said, looking out across the class quite pleased. "Though as a recap, a dark creature is magical in nature, and they actively seek to harm because they can. Not for reasons to sustain their own life or any other purpose such as breeding, which is why acromantulas and graphorns are not labeled as such." She looked to the few who mentioned them.
"Dark creatures, as they say, exist as extensions of evil intentions, often making them not have complete life cycles as a typical animal vould have. Your suggestions of grindylows and kappas are great examples. On the other hand, there are suggestions that are placed in the shades of grey of this topic. There have been some debate for a long time on a few topics, such as vampires and verevolves. Vampires feed to sustain their own lives and verevolves are only dangerous ven the full moon is out, but nowadays, they have a potion to keep their level head ven transformed. The debates, they become...complicated."
Do any of you returning students remember vot I said last term?"
The Boat
She nodded to the professor's answer. Think about my senses? Yeah, they are great. They were in DADA class and doing yoga. Did someone just change the subject definition?
Sarah blushed to bright pink when the professor mentioned her name while addressing the class. You look dumb right now. The professor had mentioned about the yoga's in earlier classes? That meant she hadn't been paying attention to the classroom. Sarah watched some people answer. So they did. She quietly went on with the new position, the boat position.

They are what? "It's like degrees of comparison" she said. Does the professor know muggle grammar? "The jinxes are smaller ones causing very minimum harm, let's say they are for fun; the hexes are more than just fun, they could cause pain" she said, "And the curses, they are the masters, they are used even for killing and generally are illegal" she said. "But all the three are negative though" You always compare even objects. She was feeling a bit repulsive today.

Minerva remembered this from last term she put her hand up quickly and almost fell over from her boat position. She rebalanced herself and put her hand up a little more careful. " Professor a Jinx is a spell that will put a small discomfort and is used for fun and tricks, a hex is stronger and cause pain and discomfort and is used in battles and duals. The curse can cause serious injury or death and should not be used unless it is absolutely necessary and is considered dark magic."
Were they supposed to stay in that boat position?? Gahh, Sophie could barely breath properly!
She tried to keep her balance while raising her hand beut failed and fell backwards. She decided to answer in a... normal position. She would go back to the boat thing later. "Professor, curses are worse than hexes, that are worse than jinxes." Sophie said lowering her hand and getting ready for the breathtaking position. "Like, jinxes can be used just for playing around." If one was a prankster, that is. Sophie couldn't see why someone nice would tie the other person's tongue into a knot. Hmph.
"Vot I vould like for you to think about though, are the three categories of spells labeled Jinxes, Hexes, and Curses. Can anyone tell me the difference between these three and why they are considered dark?"
Nigel had to think about this but could not find a better answer than the another first year West had said. Well he would give it a shot. He remeber a book he read on the subject, what was it, Oh it was The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection by Quentin Trimble. Now he remember what a jinx, a curse, and a hex are.
"Professor, Professor, Jinxes are used mostly for the amusement of people and the minor discomfort of the victim. A Hex on the other had is darker than a jinx and causes more suffering than a jinx to the victim. But a Curse is the worst kind of Dark Magic their is. They are used with the intention of causing harm, control, or even death to the victim." that was at least what nigel thought they were.
