Default The Greenhouses: Herbology Lesson One

Herbology Lesson One

It was such a nice day outside, the weather was mild, not quite warm but not cold either, and it was perfect for the first lesson of the term. Seren stood just inside the entrance to greenhouse two, waiting for the students to arrive. It was fairly dark in here, with creeping ivy curling an crawling its way up the sides of the glass panels, but there was still enough light to see clearly.

Tapping her heel excitedly and stroking the moving tendrils of a nearby ivy, Seren waited patiently for the students to arrive.
"Just form a group here please," she said to them indicating to the area just in front of her. Yes that's right... just stand there, no need for sitting just yet, or at all.

Lesson Progression:

Why is there little light in this greenhouse?
What plant is this? (identify only)
What are fire seeds used for?
Do you have any questions?
What care requirements do we need to consider?
Practice the incantation.
Practice the wand movement.
The Activity
You may be dismissed when you have finished
OOC: The lesson has officially started, do not announce yourself arriving from this point onward, just pretend as if you've been here the whole time. If you haven't done so already then please read through the Herbology Rules and Expectations and the SS Site Rules. All SS Board Rules apply. IC rule breaking will result in IC punishment, OOC rule breaking will result in OOC punishment. Please behave appropriately and most importantly... have fun. If you have any questions don't hesitate to send me a PM.

Salima thought for a while before raising her hand to answer, 'Professor, fire seeds can be used in certian potions.'

Helga was in Herbology, one of her favourite lessons, due to the fact that the professor was Head of Gryffindor and she taught really well. Helga thought hard about the question before answering. She had read about fire seeds, and then it came to her " Professor, Fire Seeds are used in certain potions. There is 1 of these plants in the Greenhouses at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There are also 7 bushes in a cave in Hagrid's garden. There is said to be a small group of caves at the Hogwarts' Forbidden Forest Clearing known as the "Fire Seed Caves, in which exist several plants of this kind." Hopefully she was correct, the locations may have been a bit much. She shrugged and waited for Professor Bently's opinoun.

Well. Aurora was well aware that Prof. Bentley was not a muggle studies teacher, but she had no other answer... she felt kind of bad about it, she usually read - well, flicked through - her herbology book before the term started, it was one of the only subjects that could keep her attention span long enough for her to try and read about it (the others being Potions and Music) but she hadn't had time this year.

Aurora raised her hand, smiling slightly. "Professor, are they used in firewhiskey?" She knew they were used in potions but about a million people had said that already...

Scribbling down some notes, Thea then proceeded to write down other peoples answers as she basically had no other ideas.
Thea rapped her fingers on top of her Herbology text book... that she had not opened ALL summer. Thea didn't find this subject interesting, but at least she tried to aanswer the questions. The practicals were pretty.. messy so she wans't too keen on them either. not that she was bothered by getting her hands dirty! No, no! Living with brothers had made her immune to all thngs like that..

Cardigan dwelled on the question for a moment. Why hadn`t she thought to study it more? She`d just have to do so when she got beck to the common rooms.Well, they are used in potions, but what else are they used for?Maybe for heating things up,like a cold drink meant to be hot!"Professor, are they used for heating cold drinks meant to be hot?"Cardigan asked. It would be very useful to know that.Very useful indeed.

"Yep, it sure is."

But then, like, they can't get the fire hot enough because the mother dragon's fire would be waaaaay hotter. So they put fire seeds in the fire and BAM! Instantly hot enough!" She figured that the professor might think she was a bit crazy for thinking of something like that. Then again, this is Hogwarts and the magical world so you really never know.
"Yes! they certainly do increase the fires temperature."

Since she couldn't jot down what they have discussed for she left her backpack near the entrance of the greenhouse, she just tried her best to store the information inside her head.

Yes, the fire seeds were in the branches in fact. She nodded after confirming it.

Moving on, the uses. What could be the use of the Fire Seed Bush? Hmmm...After raising her hand, Beatrice answered, "Professor, I think that the Fire Seeds can be used as an ingredient in some potions." Because most plants played roles like that. "As to what potion, I don't know.." She added, followed by a shrug. It was just a guess but she hoped she'd get it right. As far as the lesson was going, she had not given a correct answer yet.
"Yes, very good."

He relaxed into his seat and folded his arms with a smug expression on his face.
... well that was unexpected. But the kid had a point.
"Yes, certainly."

"Yep, it's a very versatile seed, especially good for survival int he wilderness. As for firewhiskey you will find that traces of fire seeds are in fact present in the drink. Very minimal though... otherwise you'd probably end up with heart burn." .. or something else burning.

What she had thought was a tree...was more a bush...much shorter...which made her even more embarrassed for her guess. Well, this wasn't awkward at all...mistaking a bush for a tree...

Kurumi began to inwardly panic about her Herbology OWL, and it sort of showed on her face.

But then, Professor Bentley moved the class along and Kurumi's hand went up immediately. "Fire seeds can be used to make incubators for eggs and small creatures that need to be kept warm. Dragon eggs, for example, require very hot temperatures and fire seeds are a good way to help maintain the required heat for the egg to hatch into a healthy baby dragon."
"Yes, very good Kurumi."

Unfortunately last years studies had been slightly interrupted by having to look after Harper so now she'd have to study extra hard to find out what she needed to know.

Ohh. Now here was something she could answer correctly.

"The fireseeds are used as an ingredient in Antidotes to Uncommon Poisons. The seeds are also useful for if one needed to maintain a high temperature in a room, to say breed dragons," Amelia stated. While she may not have correctly identified the bush now that she knew what it was she did have some idea of the uses of the seeds.
"Yes, very good Amelia," she replied smiling.

But fire seeds... Well from what Bentley had already told them she could make a pretty good assumption as to what they did exactly. Her answer might not be perfect but she could guess it well enough. "Well Professor maybe you can use them to heat something up? You said they were hot, so if you use them correctly perhaps you can keep something well heated. Like perhaps wizards in ancient times would keep the fire seeds under their beds to keep it warm because they did not have heat instead of a hot water bottle that Muggles used."
"Yes, very good Selina, quite often fire seeds were in fact used to heat the whole home."

Cass then patted her pockets for any sort of spare parchment and brought out the muggle pen that Lyra had once left in her room. She still preferred good ole quills over the silly ball point pens, but she had no choice, it wasn't as if she could whip out a quill and an inkwell and write without making a mess.

She then scribbled the information down on the parchment, taking care not to press too hard and pierce a hole through it while casually glancing up at the plant every other minute or so.

"They're basically used for potion ingredients Professor." She answered, although she wasn't sure which potion needed it, she really couldn't imagine a potion that needed fire seeds. "and well, maybe they can be used for other things too, like uh..portable heat?" She guessed "Maybe you can put a few seeds inside a glass jar and you can carry it around during winter to prevent frostbite or something like that."

Then she wondered..."Professor, does a fire seed's flame ever burn out?"

"Yes very good, though you'd want to make sure the glass in reinforced otherwise it'll explode..." and that would be unfortunate.

"It most certainly does... when the plant dies, if the seeds are cooled too much or if its extinguished on purpose."

Whatever it is, Ira risked telling her own answer. She raised her hand up and answered, "Professor, as their names suggest, are they used to light a fire? Or maybe they just help to keep the temperature warm.." Because low flames could already be seen at the base of the bush. She continued, "But I do know that they are used for making some potions. I remember them being mentioned in book."

Right, caution, she probably shouldn't poke her face into the plant to observe more carefully then. Selena rocked back and forth in her shoes as she tried to figure out what they were used for.

"The fire seeds are used in certain potions, but they have to be thoroughly extinguished first," Selena said. It sounded right. So was it right? Eh, whatever other people could be creative with their answers. Selena just wanted to stare at the plant on fire.

Oh.

Right. Had he mentioned that he wasn't all that good at Herbology? Valerie would have hit him over the head with a book for that answer, probably. OF COURSE it was a Fire Seed Bush. Cough. Scribbling that down on a piece of parchment he was holding up - writing with gloves on his hands proved to be VERY difficult - Lewis looked back up at the professor's next question. Hey, he actually KNEW that!!

"The seeds are mainly used as a potion ingredient, Professor!" Lewis replied, raising his hand high up into the air, proud to actually know the answer in this class for once.
Seren smiled brightly at the enthusiastic badger.
"Yes, very good."

"FFFFOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM!!!!!! INSTANTLY HOTTER FLAMES! HOT LIKE THE SUN!" Not only did she make the noise she moved her arms to indicate something getting bigger, but in this case hotter.

Kacie giggled, as she brushed her curly hair from her face. Was it obvious she was a first year? "Well maybe not as hot as the sun, but close enough. Hot enough for humans to hatch dragon eggs themselves," She stroked her chin, before adding one last thing. "Though I'm not really sure about it actually being use as an ingredient inside a potion, but maybe to help heat the cauldron to a hotter temperature while keeping the fire at a level that its manageable. If it was thrown into a cauldron, I have this picture of the content getting way to hot and boiling over. Might make the cauldron go BOOM!!!"

Finally daring to raise her hand, she answered rather unsurely, "Professor, I suppose the Fire Seeds can be used for potions," Weren't all plants used for potions after all? At least that's what Tayla thought. "And er...I guess they'd also be helpful to use as a source of light and heat? Like when camping out or traveling at night?"
"Indeed, both very good answers."

She looked at the plant side ways still hot it looked so red and angry why couldn't magical plants be pretty and smell nice
... and yet another student to ramble. Trying to focus on the girls speech, Seren picked out something she heard, not paying attention to the glacius charm simply because it wasn't part of the question.

"Yes, they're often used in potions, not only IN the actual brew but also the fuel the fire beneath the cauldron should you need a particularly high temperature."

"Light yes, though it's not a pure light so you're better off using another method. But certainly you can use it in potions and it has been known to be used in cooking... though I wouldn't recommend it."

Well he knew about its use in potions, he might have remembered something about that either in reading for class or from his father, but there had to be other uses.

"You can use it as a light source, either stable or as a torch as you move as long as you are careful about not burning yourself," the fifth year replied offering his first idea before going further. "You can also use them to defend against Devil's Snare since that plant likes neither the light nor heat that a fireseed produces." The class had been nearly obsessed with Devil's Snare at the beginning of the lesson so why not bring it back into focus.
"Yes you most certainly could, though its not a pure light, so you're better off using something else if you can."

Seren nodded at the boys second answer.. again with the Devils Snare, it seemed rather popular today. "Indeed."

Not wanting his eyebrows to singe, he backed away.

Then it was question time again. Why can't I remember this...? he wondered. After all, he had to study this stuff for OWLs last year. Then again, he had an entire summer for it to leak out of his head, especially given that he spent the holiday cramming Quidditch into every empty reservoir of his brain. Think Keef... what would you use fire seeds for? His head was getting warm, and he felt like he was beating his brain against his skull to no avail. Man, I'm confused. Wait a minute...

He raised both hands eagerly. "Professor, could fire seeds be used in certain potions? Maybe they could be used to produce heat, like for the Pepperup Potion when steam comes out of your ears? Or perhaps in Befuddlement Draughts or similar, where the drinker can become hotheaded or reckless?" All of this was a guess, so he was fully expecting to get a solid "No" for an answer.
Seren nodded encouragingly. "Yes, very good."

Right?

They were like muggle plants, right?
Seren resisted the urge to giggle, but it was so hard, the little Lions answer was just too cute.
"Indeed, that would be one of it's primary functions," she said winking.

"Professor where do plants like this occur naturally if they are so flammable?" The Gryffindor was rather confused about this.

What were they used for? "Professor Bentley, could they be used to help raise and breed Fire-crabs. I read that they are fond of heat and flames."
"Ahh good question August, they're usually found in caves or deep in forests where there is little light and damp conditions."
Offering her Lion a smile, she then nodded at his response, "Yes they most certainly can be. Very versatile seeds they are."

But to Ellie, despite what the professor said, the plant seemed dangerous. It was on fire, for Merlin's sake. One would probably have to use the Glacius charm before trying to touch that thing. Not that Ellie would touch it.

Now it's purposes... Ellie knew she read something about fire seeds somewhere... She furrowed her brows and thought... and thought... "OH!" Ellie flailed and shot her hand up. "Professor, they're used in Dragon breeding. When Dragon babies are still in the egg, their mother's breathe fire on them to keep them hot. But when you're raising your own dragon - which would be a psychotic thing to do - you have to use these fire seeds to keep them hot enough. Just as if its mother was breathing fire on them." Aaaand a deep breath. Whew. That was exciting.

"Oh, and they're also used in some potions, but it's not very common." Yup.
Seren smiled and gave the Ravenclaw a nod. "Very good."

"Other than for planting, assuming they're hot on contact they would make great projectile weapons if aimed correctly." Just a simple throw into someone's face and bam! Seren stared at the Slytherin Quidditch Captain... a weapon. Ok, yes she had asked for unique, but this was borderline psychotic, no doubt Lafays influence. But the girl did have a point.

"I suppose you could do that... but you shouldn't." No... no encouraging bad behaviour.

Can't it also be used in some sort of potions?" But then Adam was slightly confused. Fire in a potion-well that was if what he mentioned were correct- couldn't fire in a potion be a possibly bad thought.

"Professor, if it can be used in a potion would it be used for good reasons, as remedies or would it be more likely to used as a poisonous potion? An, if it's fire, an candles are a sort of tiny floatable fire, can a fire seed be incased in a bottle an be kept lit, or does it just only work in the open air?"
Seren was rather impressed with her Prefects answer, he raised some good points. "Because of the energy emitted from the seeds they can be used in both medicinal potions and also poisonous ones.. it's more about achieving the right balance of chemistry..." but of course she wasn't a potioneer so that's as far as her knowledge went.

"You could certainly use it as a light source, though if it is bottled then yes, the flame would be extinguished eventually."

OOC: RP moving to the very back of the dark and cold greenhouse for further instructions. If your character has any questions about the Fire Seeds, NOW is the time to ask, if not then just sit tight and wait for further instructions. The lesson will resume in approximately 14 hours.

Oh yes...Kourtney remembered that fire very well. Poor Professor Bentley had been absolutely crushed when that had happened. She knew now what had happened...or she could take a very educated guess thanks to the events that happened at the end of the term. She wondered briefly how the baby elf was doing before she began to follow the professor.

Wow, it was dark in here....and a little chilly. Pulling her robes tighter around herself, she slowly walked deeper into the greenhouse. Planting fire seed plants. That would definitely be an experience, but so was every other Herbology lesson she had attended. Professor Bentley made it a blast though.

Kourt came to a stop near a row of stools and hopped onto one just as a few torches flared to life. Much better.

Hope is the only thing stronger than fear.

Whoa, lucky guess on the Fire Whiskey thing. Jezzabelle was excited thought. She was getting somewhere. Just then they moved once more and she heard that they would be planting some more Fire Seed Bushes. This made for a very good day now. Nothing is more fun then getting in the dirt and getting a little dirty. "No questions from me professor."

Fire seeds were used for dragon treatment? Well, it seemed natural. They needed a fiery diet to get back the fire breathing going. Hehe. Sounded quite predictable. AND SHE PREDICTED IT. Heh.

Anyway. Moving on.

Nodding her head dramatically at the memory of the burnt greenhouse that they were forced asked to help fix, Louisa listened intently to Bentley. ignore the rhyming But.. but... whaaaaaa? They were going to plant more fire trees? Whatever they were called. That sounded... dangerous.

Suppressing a sigh, the young girl followed everyone else deeper into the greenhouse. Darker place. Weird and moving plants around, she found herself grabbing someone's robe and quickly pulled her hand away. Ahem. She was not afraid. Yet. Now if she could just find Vashti and cuddle stick by her side.

Aww. Had he just gotten a smile from the Herbology Professor? That was new. His old Herbology professor had hated his guts. Mainly because he was just no use in this subject. Maybe there had been other reasons too but whatever. Smiling back at her, Lewis then resumed to take notes on what the other people suggested the fire seeds could be used for.

O_______________________o

There had been a FIRE in her research shed? Was that the reason the Headmaster had mentioned the no-dying rule at the Start of Term Feast?! WHATKINDOFSCHOOLWASTHIS?! Just staring at her, he watched her mouth move but didn't actually hear what she was saying. She did look a little pale as if the memory of the fire was still a little hard for her. What had happened?!

As soon as she told them to follow her, Lewis was on his feet and dashed after her, trying to catch up with her. When she stopped he was right behind her and almost tugged her by the arm in order to get her attention. He just HAD to know. Instead raising his hand, he didn't actually wait for her to call on him but instead said - in barely more than a whisper, "Did-did somebody DIE in that fire?!" Because if the answer was yes he was going to leave RIGHT NOW!

"So now that we're familiar with some of the uses of fire seeds, I want to share something with you." She braced herself... the memories from last term came back to her, what a nightmare. "Some of you will remember the fire that assaulted my research shed last term... well new information has come to light, and it was the result of fire seeds...." and a particularly snoopy baby elf.
"Now as a result of this, we only now have this one Fire Seed Bush, now I have taken the liberty of replenishing our fire seed stores, so today, you guessed it, we'll be planting fire seed plants!"

Cue excitement, yes?

"Now if you'll follow me a little further for more instructions."
Seren motioned with her arm for the students to follow her deeper still into the dark, cold greenhouse.

There certainly were some important and significant answers given by the other students. Most certainly.

Moving on, Beatrice tucked a stray strand of her hair behind her ear as she listened, she did remember the accident last term that was caused by the baby elf now under the custody of Nimma but still doesn't have a name. It's intrusion in various classes clearly brought scare and panic to the students that time. And whaat? They'll be planting Fire Seed Bushes? How awesome was that? Last term toadstools, now Fire Seed Bushes. She silently wondered if Professor Seren actually wants them to get killed. Hehe.

But really it was cool! Planting..that was something she wasn't too bad at doing and what's more, they were not just going to plant ordinary plants. They were going to plant extraordinary ones! When the Herbology Professor motioned them to follow, Beezus quickly yet carefully took steps as they went deeper into the greenhouse.

Once the torches have been lit, she saw that it was just like a classroom with a blackboard and a few stools.

"Professor, does the seeds of the Fire Seed Bush err--burn or emit out flames or something?" She asked after raising her hand. That was her question before they get started.

Oh, yay!

Nora had a feeling she will leave the class with burned hands, even though they'd be using gloves... hopefully. Great.

Trying to think of something else, she quietly followed professor Bentley even deeper into the darkness, and it was also getting cold. Grateful that she lit up a few torches, Nora took a seat on the nearest stool and wrapped her robe a bit tighter around herself.

Buuut they'll probably get warm from the seeds.

Minerva moved with the class. She shivered a bit, because the greenhouse seemed to be getting cooler the further they went in. She found a stool to sit on and took her seat pulling out her gloves so they would be easier to access once they got started. Hmmm she thought she knew the professor would never put them in danger, but the thought of touching something that burnt down the shed made her a little uneasy. Well being possibly burnt by these seeds sounded better then those pixies from first term. She followed the professor with her eyes waiting for the next instruction.

Ah so they could be used for defensive purposes! Kimalia quickly jotted that note down, she would have to owl her dad about a potential new security system for their home. Hehe. Anyways, she moved towards the very back of the dark greenhouse already ready to get started.. It was pretty chilly, but nothing she didn't experience on the Quidditch field.

Kurumi jotted down a few notes on her parchment as Professor Bentley responded to each student, flinching a bit when more points were deducted. It didn't really matter that they were not lions, although it made Kurumi feel better knowing that the new students in her house seemed to be more on top of things than last term, but there had been so many points taken already. Seemed as though everyone was making up for this being the first opening feast during her five terms where points hadn't been taken. Better late than never? Or something like that.

Baby house elf. Kurumi should have known. At least Professor Bentley's shed had been burned down herbologically if that was even a word as opposed to, well, whatever it was that had caused the fire in Professor Lafay's storeroom. Kurumi still had no idea how that had started - besides her opening the door to it and causing a small explosion.

Patting her bag to make sure that her gloves were still in there, Kurumi eyed the Fire Seed Bush and its delicate looking flames. "Professor Bentley," Kurumi said as she raised her hand. "What would happen if the flames went out? It was mentioned that you need to use a Freezing Charm on the seeds in order to be able to handle them, but say you used a the charm on the plant itself." Like...if someone misaimed...could they accidentally kill the poor plant?

... well that was unexpected. But the kid had a point.
"Yes, certainly."

"They can be... yes."

"Yep, it's a very versatile seed, especially good for survival int he wilderness. As for firewhiskey you will find that traces of fire seeds are in fact present in the drink. Very minimal though... otherwise you'd probably end up with heart burn." .. or something else burning.

"Yes, correct."

"Yes, very good Kurumi."

"Yes, very good."

"Yes, very good Amelia," she replied smiling.

"Yes, very good Selina, quite often fire seeds were in fact used to heat the whole home."

"Yes, very good."

"Yes very good, though you'd want to make sure the glass in reinforced otherwise it'll explode..." and that would be unfortunate.

"It most certainly does... when the plant dies, if the seeds are cooled too much or if its extinguished on purpose."

"Yes all very good answers."

"Absolutely correct."

Seren smiled brightly at the enthusiastic badger.
"Yes, very good."

Seren was slightly taken aback by the girls rudeness. This was HER lesson and SHE was teaching them about Fire Seed Bushes, NOT the Whomping Willow. "Five points from Ravenclaw for being rude. If you have a question not relating to the topic I suggest you see me after class, or better yet, check your textbook." ...

"Yes very good Justin."

"Yes very good, it's definitely a good fire starter." ... she knew that first hand.

"Good good, all very good."

"Yes... yes... and yes," she replied, smiling at the last answer in particular.

.... at least it was a unique response.

"Well... if you mean the seed would fall to the ground, bury itself in the soil, water itself and then grow... then yes, it's exactly like a phoenix from the ashes."

.. did she just humour the girl?

"Yes, very good."

Seren nodded, " yes, absolutely!"

... well that was blunt. "Yes, but there is so much more to them than just that."

"Indeed they are," she replied before hearing Louisa's question. "It's not naturally part of their diet, but it's sometimes used for treatment.. get the fire going again so to speak." ... she wasn't really a dragon expert though.

"Yes, very good."

"I wouldn't advise it, but it's not unheard of."

Merlin's Saggy Undergarments! ... this girl clearly didn't know how to refine her answers. "I suggest focusing on one aspect next time dear, or else you might go blue in the face." .. "But yes, you're mostly right, though I would refrain from introducing it to materials which are not reinforced." .. or else you'd end up with melted rubbery goop.
"Light... yes, but as you can see it's not the most efficient source of light." .. the orange glow wasn't prominent enough to cut through the darkness as the single light source.

"Yes, you're absolutely correct," she nodded at the young Lion, Merlin she was an enthusiastic one.

"Indeed you can, good answer."

"Yes and yes."

... where the heck has this girl been? Staring at the flames too long?
"Five points from Slytherin for not paying attention.... try to keep up."

Closing her eyes for a slit second, Seren then exhaled and turned back to the student. "We have already identified the plant as a Fire Seed Bush.. now focus please."

"Yes, very good."

"Yep, they most certainly are."

"Yes, that's correct dear."

"Indeed, both very good answers."

... and yet another student to ramble.

But certainly you can use it in potions and it has been known to be used in cooking... though I wouldn't recommend it."

... this girl had a scary streak, thank goodness she wasn't a Lion.
"Yes I don't doubt that," Seren replied in a flat tone.... memories.

"Yes, well done."

"Yes you most certainly could, though its not a pure light, so you're better off using something else if you can."

Seren nodded at the boys second answer.. again with the Devils Snare, it seemed rather popular today. "Indeed."

"Yes, very good Harvey."

Seren nodded encouragingly. "Yes, very good."

Seren resisted the urge to giggle, but it was so hard, the little Lions answer was just too cute.
"Indeed, that would be one of it's primary functions," she said winking.

"Ahh good question August, they're usually found in caves or deep in forests where there is little light and damp conditions."
Offering her Lion a smile, she then nodded at his response, "Yes they most certainly can be. Very versatile seeds they are."

"Yes very good on both counts, traces of it are certainly used in firewhickey to give it that umph factor and it's definitely a good source of heat."

Seren smiled and gave the Ravenclaw a nod. "Very good."

Again Seren found her senses being assaulted by the loud Lion girl. Merlin help her... but having said that, it wasn't all bad. An enthusiastic young mind was always appreciated, and at least this one probably wouldn't get scared off by a few flesh eating trees. Seren made a mental note to introduce the class to some shortly...

"Yes indeed, Slamanders feed on fire, and fire seeds a rich source.... in fire." Obviously...
As for having one in the dorms... um.. "No."
"I don't think that would be a very wise idea, and aside from that it wouldn't survive in those conditions... but you're always welcome to come here and look after your own." .. yes her own. Because they were going to get to that soon enough.

"Yes, very good Alex," she replied brightly.

"Very good, very good."

"Yes, absolutely."

Seren smirked a little at the mention of marshmellows. Now there was an idea woth mentioning.

And then the real answers. "Yes, that's correct."

"Very good."

... Seren eyed the snake. Was she serious?

"Uhh yes."

Seren nodded at each of the boys responses... pausing briefly at the mention of weaponry. Geez these kids likes the idea of setting things on fire.
"Yes, very good."

"Indeed, very good response Eino," she said nodding.

"Indeed very good response Sierra, its flames are not only the bi-product of their natural energy but it is also a defensive mechanism.. both for the plant and for us." All very good aspects to consider.

"Yep, definitely."

"That's a sound theory," she replied, amused.

... "Yes all very good." ... though perhaps just stick answering THE question next time. She ignored the part about cooling it down. It was more information than she had asked for.

"Yes indeed."

... Uh... were they studying History of Magic now? Seren blinked a few times, looking from the girl to the plant, then back to the girl. "Well yes of course there is a plant at Hogwarts, we're looking for it. As for your other information... I suggest you read an actual herbology book and not a history of magic one. Aside form that you did not answer the question I asked..."

How could one be so wrong?

"Yes they most certainly are, though only in small amounts."

.. no response from Thea? that was unlike her.

Ahh finally the girl got her act together and caught up. "You could do that... though you would have to be extremely cautious."

Well there were some unique answers there... even if most of it was pretty straight forward.
"Right very good everyone, I hope you were all paying attention to each others responses, there were some interesting points made there." She wasn't about to go over it all again, nope, she had a head ache, so it was time to move on.

Cue excitement, yes?

"Now if you'll follow me a little further for more instructions."
Seren motioned with her arm for the students to follow her deeper still into the dark, cold greenhouse.

Stopping at the very back in front of row of stools for the students to sit on, Seren ignited a few torches that were struck in the dirt. There, a bit more light. "Now does anyone have any questions before we get started?" she asked, moving her blackboard into view.

Vlimia went bright red. Losing points! She could never do that ever again! Vlim really did want to know about the Whomping Willow... but perhaps the question was quite off topic. When the proffesor gave the instructions, Vlim shuffled to the back of the rather ominous greenhouse, that now became quite chilly and dark. Maybe the fireseeds would help with warmth and light. Sure enough, a few torches were lit (not with fireseeds, though). She sat on one of the stools set out for students. Vlimia did have one question, but that question lost her some house points, so she kept it in.

Tsk, another 5 points were deducted from Slytherin. She eyed the silly firsty who made them lost any points. She need worked very hard to gain many points. Although she didn't like herbology, she just pretended to be a nice girl and at least. SHE PAID ATTENTION to the lesson.

Shame on YOU! she thought.

Ah, question? Suddenly she just have a question.

"Professor Bentley." she's raised her right hand gentle. "I wonder what potions that use fire seed bush as the ingredients?" she asked.

'No. No questions', Gwen said simply. Whaaat? We are going to plant those? Won't we get hurt?!, she asked herself, almost sure that she was going to set something on fire. Oooh. Whatever- it's not like I expect something good to happen in this class. Actually- I do have one question!, Gwendolyn thought, but decided not to say anything. Just because asking 'is there a chance we set something on fire?' would definitely sound stupid. There- better shut up!

Noticing that everyone was moving forward, Gwen thought this class would never end. I'm going to die of boredom, surrounded by fire seed plants.

A ship in harbor is safe — but that is not what ships are built for.

Victoria was relieved that she had gotten one questions correct. But that wasn't exactly the main thing that's swirling in her mind. What exactly is in the very dark part of the Greenhouse? Anything cool?? Where and what exactly are they going to plant the fire seeds in? Victoria followed eagerly forward with the professor, curious to find out what they're going to find or see next. This is certainy the rare time which Victoria found something in Herbology interesting. Fire seeds...

"Yes, that's correct dear."

"Indeed, both very good answers."

... and yet another student to ramble.

But certainly you can use it in potions and it has been known to be used in cooking... though I wouldn't recommend it."

... this girl had a scary streak, thank goodness she wasn't a Lion.

Stopping at the very back in front of row of stools for the students to sit on, Seren ignited a few torches that were struck in the dirt. There, a bit more light. "Now does anyone have any questions before we get started?" she asked, moving her blackboard into view.

OOC: RP moving to the very back of the dark and cold greenhouse for further instructions. If your character has any questions about the Fire Seeds, NOW is the time to ask, if not then just sit tight and wait for further instructions. The lesson will resume in approximately 14 hours.

Harvey had been smiling as he could feel that something good was going to come next it always did in Professor Bentley's Herbology class.. but at the mention of her research shed and that smile quickly disappeared.. being the Professor Bentley was his favourite professor it had hurt him to see her that way after the fire.. she didnt deserve to have all her research burnt.. and he still felt bad and sad for her .. he could see it still bothered her.. and why wouldnt it.. all her research gone!! he guessed that it was good that he didnt contact her over the summer as she needed the break from students.. but he would try to visit her this year.. but less than last year.. she would probably be busy this year.. with all that went on last year.. how could HE be EXCITED about planting something that burnt down her shed? HOW?!! but he would plant them anyway he didnt want to upset or anger the professor.. he followed the professor deeper into the shed and put on his gloves... they would be needed in handling these stupid research-burning seeds and he then waited for further instructions..

Taylor packed the quill and parchment that she was writing notes with. She was excited to be planting fireseeds. Taylor followed the professor.
