It was such a nice day outside, the weather was mild, not quite warm but not cold either, and it was perfect for the first lesson of the term. Seren stood just inside the entrance to greenhouse two, waiting for the students to arrive. It was fairly dark in here, with creeping ivy curling an crawling its way up the sides of the glass panels, but there was still enough light to see clearly.
Tapping her heel excitedly and stroking the moving tendrils of a nearby ivy, Seren waited patiently for the students to arrive. "Just form a group here please," she said to them indicating to the area just in front of her. Yes that's right... just stand there, no need for sitting just yet, or at all.
OOC: The lesson has officially started, do not announce yourself arriving from this point onward, just pretend as if you've been here the whole time. If you haven't done so already then please read through the Herbology Rules and Expectations and the SS Site Rules. All SS Board Rules apply. IC rule breaking will result in IC punishment, OOC rule breaking will result in OOC punishment. Please behave appropriately and most importantly... have fun. If you have any questions don't hesitate to send me a PM.
Admiring the warm glow of the specimen before her, Seren managed to finally peel her eyes away from the light and turned to the students. Now what did they make of this fine plant?
A number of the students seemed to be lost for words, this didn't surprise her. The glowing branches and low flames were a captivating sight. "Well done to those of you who correctly identified this specimen as a Fire Seed Bush... as you can see the bush bears no leaves, rather it has the appearance of a leafless old tree.. small tree that is." Because really it only reached up to her waist, and that wasn't exactly tall. "The bush is characterised by its bright glow which comes from within the plant. The low embers at its base are also a key indicator as to its identity."
Seren paused briefly to let the students absorb this information and observe the plant a little longer. "If you look close enough you can see that the fire seeds grow along the branches." ... slightly camouflaged by the branches glow.
"Though the plant is not considered dangerous, you should exercise great caution when working with them so that you do not burn yourself."
"Can anybody hazard a guess as to what the uses are for the Fire Seeds?"
OOC: Feel free to be CREATIVE and have FUN with this. Please do NOT edit your answers, participation is participation and you don't always need to be right. The lesson will resume in approximately 18-20 hours. Thanks! XD
Oh yeah. Selena had been right, it gave her a nice feeling of accomplishment. Mmmhmmm. She had a smile on her face as she continued to listen to the professor speak. She could see the the little seeds there once Professor Bentley pointed them out. And they were kinda pretty in the fire. Right, caution, she probably shouldn't poke her face into the plant to observe more carefully then. Selena rocked back and forth in her shoes as she tried to figure out what they were used for.
"The fire seeds are used in certain potions, but they have to be thoroughly extinguished first," Selena said. It sounded right. So was it right? Eh, whatever other people could be creative with their answers. Selena just wanted to stare at the plant on fire.

Squinting in the still-quite-darkness, Lewis realized that he had bumped into no other than Kurumi. Phew! Good. Well, not GOOD but at least he didn't have to be scared somebody would be angry at him. Unless Walnut was somewhere nearby. But then again, he wouldn't be allowed in here, right? RIGHT?!
Lewis gave the Prefect a smile while trying to make out his surroundings and whether or not they included a little short-legged cat. Didn't seem like it though. Hmm. Oh, and the Professor was talking again. Oh well, he was just going to go on ASSUMING the cat wasn't here. If his shoes got wet he'd at least know why.
Oh.
Right. Had he mentioned that he wasn't all that good at Herbology? Valerie would have hit him over the head with a book for that answer, probably. OF COURSE it was a Fire Seed Bush. Cough. Scribbling that down on a piece of parchment he was holding up - writing with gloves on his hands proved to be VERY difficult - Lewis looked back up at the professor's next question. Hey, he actually KNEW that!!
"The seeds are mainly used as a potion ingredient, Professor!" Lewis replied, raising his hand high up into the air, proud to actually know the answer in this class for once.

Vlim jotted down notes and a small sketch of what a Fire Seed Bush looked like. Vlimia was very nervous, since she had a question to ask. She hoped it wouldn't be seen as rude or something. Vlim raised her had politely. "I think it's seeds are used in some potions. And, uh, I wanted to know how the Whomping Willow moves around by itself?" Well, duh. Magic. Everybody would think she was stupid now. "I mean, is it a type of rare magical plant, or is it charmed or something?" She clarified, hoping that would clear it up. Vlimia had seen the Willow and was curious about it.
Justin was upset that he had answered incorrectly. Then the teacher asked another question. Up went his hand again, " The seeds once extinguished can be used as an ingredient in potions."
Isabelle heard people saying that they could be used for potions ingredients once they were extinguished and she was pretty sure that was correct. But, she was pretty sure there were other uses. Isabelle raised her hand. "Well like others said they can be used for potions, but can't they also be used to start fires. If you combine a fire seed with wood wouldn't it burn?" she asked. Izzy wasn't sure, but she thought that it was a good guess.

Tennessee peeked from where she stood and stared at the bush. Fascinating, the burning bush, she thought. She heard Professor Bentley ask what is the use of fire seeds. This is a new one for her. She had never heard of the plant before. She heard from their answers that it is being used in potions. Hmmm! "Probably Professor, it provides light for its surrounding and also for the use of wizards in different potions. Perhpas it is also created that way for it to serve as a defense mechanism for itself against things that may harm the plant," she said.
Oh, goodie! Another wrong answer, the Ravenclaw thought while trying to pay attention to what the Professor was saying. Another question... let's see- if I don't get this one either, than I'm a troll, Gwendolyn decided. 'Well, they are used in some potions' Psh. All the plants they had been studying so far were used in potions, so why wouldn't this be as well?
'But the seeds can also be used to mantain a very high temperature', she added after a short pause. And why would someone want to mantain a high temperature? Why is it usefull? Hmm... 'Err... or it could be used by students when practicing the Glacius Charm?'FAAAAAAIL.
After having said this, Gwen thought it was true what she heard about this plant. Can it really be found in the caves in the Forbidden Forest? The Fire Seed Caves?!

Lily had to think about this question. She wanted to try and answer it because she was unable to answer the other question. some sort of fire plant, huh. Lily thought. then it came to her. Lily raised her hand and then answered "What if that was how the plant reproduced, kinda like a Phoenix, that flames and then returns from the ashes as a young Phoenix again." Lily wasn't sure if this was correct but it definitely sounded plausible. She grabbed her notebook and quill and started writing down everything furiously.
Wow! That's one lucky guess. Messer listened to Professor Bentley when she was explaining to the class more about the fire seed bush. He need to resist the urge to poke it or he might burn himself like the professor said. Then there its the next question. What they were used for.
The young badger raised his hand before answering the question "Its usually used for a potion." Most plants do or maybe for a lightning?

Fire seeds. They sounded extremely familiar. Now what were they used for? Ariella remembered her dad telling her about them. Something that had to do with...dragons maybe? She raised her hand.
"I'm pretty sure that fire seeds are used for hatching dragon eggs," she said tentatively, lowering her hand. "And of course, they're used in some potions."
His guess was correct. That was rare. He barely got anything right before. At least to some people. "Potion ingredients," responded Hades with his hand lazily put up. It was the only logical answer he can think of. Most plants they studied in Herbolog eventually will become potions ingredients anyway. There was no doubt about it. Either that or making wands.
Louisa listened intently to Bentley while her eyes focusing on the bush. It was intimidating with its lifeless appearance yet glowing nature- it was great. Louisa liked it. And it was quite weird that she hadn't read much about Fire Seed Bushes. Raising her hand modestly, since she had no smart reply to the answer, the girl spoke, "I'd say the fire seeds are used in some potions, professor." Most of herbology plants were used there anyways. Louisa then added, "Do dragons eat fire seeds?" If yes, then they're used as food to tame the dragons? Perhaps? Meh, she didn't know.

Fire Seeds?
Nora felt quite embarrased to admit to herself that she had no idea what those were used for, but she thought she'd better give it a try, so she raised her hand. "Maybe they can be used instead of Incendio? To start a fire?" Or maybe used in potions? But... nahh. What Nora had in mind was something like; potion + fire seeds = boom!
Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.
Oakey thought about this one. Yeah it would used in a potion, most everything in herbology is. There had to be something different. Could it be used in recipes, for some EXTREME spice. It is a magical plant after all.

Bouncing Blueberries.
Seren could have died of laughter, but of course she wouldn't permit herself to laugh in front of a student, not when it was at their expense. "Um no dear... interesting guess though."
"Uhh nope, I think you'll find a wiggen tree is a fair bit larger than this for starters," she mused eyeing the waist high specimen.
Uhhh muggle thing? "Aurora... I'm a herbologist, not a muggle studies specialist."
She shook her head briefly... yikes.
"Well now that certainly would be a sight to see... but no, it's not an Alder tree." Another unique thought though.
Oohh now this one was close.. on the right track at least. "Sort of... not quite," she replied.
"Interesting thought, but no it's a wee bit short to be a want tree."
And then there were answers that came out of nowhere. How did they come to that conclusion?
... "No... it's definitely not Dittany... Dittany is a a herb, and despite its reputation as the burning bush, it does not actually burn.." unless you set it on fire, which she wouldn't recommend. "It's the herbs colour and flammable vapours which earn it that title."
And finally at long last... a few students managed to identify the specimen correctly.

Alyssa was disappointed that she had misidentified the plant. So she thought carefully about the next question before she raised her hand and answered." Professor, Fire seeds are collected and used in certain potions. Sometimes people use them to keep the temperature of their fire high. I guess if they are cooled down first, they could also be stored in a rubber water bag, so that when they heat up again, the rubber water bag warms up and it keeps your feet warm during the cold winter days. Maybe they could alternatively be used to light up a room instead of using electricity or lamps...and sorry for such a long answer...but could it be used to help light the way in the dark?" Alyssa hazarded a guess.

Kacie had been quite up until now, getting use to the greenhouse and how the class was going, but she was ready now. She knew she had seen that plant before, but she couldn't remember wear, so she didn't try to guess. Once the professor told them that it was a fire seed bush, her mind suddenly went ablaze. She remembered now where she saw it, it had to be in one of her fathers books. She couldn't let this question go by without putting in her own unique answer.
"Oh oh oh oh oh oh!!!!!! I have an answer to that." she said, after her hand shot in the air. "Well we can already produce fire, with and without magic and I'm sure they can be used to make a fire, but I believe there's more to them then that," Kacie started, but she was far from finish with her answer. "Lets say you have a fire and you need it hotter then your average fire simply throw in a fire seed or two." Kacie took in a deep breath, allowing her cheeks to puff out, before a loud funny sound came out.
"FFFFOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM!!!!!! INSTANTLY HOTTER FLAMES! HOT LIKE THE SUN!" Not only did she make the noise she moved her arms to indicate something getting bigger, but in this case hotter.
Kacie giggled, as she brushed her curly hair from her face. Was it obvious she was a first year? "Well maybe not as hot as the sun, but close enough. Hot enough for humans to hatch dragon eggs themselves," She stroked her chin, before adding one last thing. "Though I'm not really sure about it actually being use as an ingredient inside a potion, but maybe to help heat the cauldron to a hotter temperature while keeping the fire at a level that its manageable. If it was thrown into a cauldron, I have this picture of the content getting way to hot and boiling over. Might make the cauldron go BOOM!!!"
The uses for fire seeds? Hmmm, well that could be a few different things. Raising his hand, he asked "Couldn't you use them for things like when your camping and can't start a fire you place it ontop of wood and it'll set it on fire within seconds?" he asked. He thought that was one of the things his dad had used when they were stranded on a few of their expeditions he'd taken Isaac on.
Taylor had no clue what the plant was until the teacher told them,.... she really needed to study up on plants. When the teacher asked what fireseeds were used for she raised her hand. She loved potion class so the first thing she thought of was of course, "Some of the use is in potions." The second part wasn't as easy for her but she ventured on a guess here since it does make since, "and if i'm not mistaken, wouldn't it keep fires at a high temperature then normal." Taylor blushed at that last part, thinking that she may be wrong.

Cardigan knew this one.Herbology was one of the subjects she was actually good at."Is it Dittany professor?"She said with a serious tone.People usually didn't take her seriously, being only 11 years of age.
Aahh, that was easy! "They can be used for potions!" Sophie actually guessed. She knew that a lot of plants and herbs and this kind of stuff were used as potions ingredients, so she couldn't think of a better answer. She could be wrong though. "Oh well." she thought, looking around to her classmates and to some pretty plants she spotted.

It was a while before Victoria got the main idea of the class. She had never been not confused in this class before. After all, when had Victoria been ever to identify a poisonous toadstool to a non-poisonous toadstool?
Going with the flow, Victoria replied to the next question. "It could be used in potion as a potion ingredient? Or perhaps to start a magical fire?" They are Fire Seeds after all.

So people in class had mentioned potions. But that was too mainstream for someone who knew plants as little as Ari did. 'If they're called fire seeds, doesn't it mean that they sort of grow into flames, and therefore could be used to create fire?' the girl replied, after having raised her hand and deciding to say the first thing that came to mind. Better that than nothing.

Tayla listened as Professor Bentley spoke and the students offered their answers. Though reading helped, Herbology wasn't her best subject. She was content to keep silent most of the time.
Finally daring to raise her hand, she answered rather unsurely, "Professor, I suppose the Fire Seeds can be used for potions," Weren't all plants used for potions after all? At least that's what Tayla thought. "And er...I guess they'd also be helpful to use as a source of light and heat? Like when camping out or traveling at night?"
LuLu stared at the plant it wasn't Dittany... Well she did say fire bush never mind didn't matter... It wasn't like her life depended on it
''Well I guess the warmth of the plant has some affect on us such as keeping us warm or, They are used in certain potions. In order to be collected, the seeds must be cooled down. The fastest way of doing this is using the Glacius Charm, I wouldn't be totally sure Proffeser although It could be like the lights affect on the ivy but using the fire this time since it wouldn't catch anything on fire easily and it never runs out I presume,''
She looked at the plant side ways still hot it looked so red and angry why couldn't magical plants be pretty and smell nice
So it was a Fire Seed bush, That was interesting. For some reason, the name of the plant seemed familiar to her. Maybe someone had mentioned it in the common room at one point, possibly even when she was a wee first year. Nudging her way up to get a better look at the plant, she studied if for a moment before hazarding a guess. "Well, I'm sure you could possibly use it for light, assuming you don't get burned in the process. If they are not poisionous, they might be used in cooking, and probably in potion making as well."
