It was such a nice day outside, the weather was mild, not quite warm but not cold either, and it was perfect for the first lesson of the term. Seren stood just inside the entrance to greenhouse two, waiting for the students to arrive. It was fairly dark in here, with creeping ivy curling an crawling its way up the sides of the glass panels, but there was still enough light to see clearly.
Tapping her heel excitedly and stroking the moving tendrils of a nearby ivy, Seren waited patiently for the students to arrive. "Just form a group here please," she said to them indicating to the area just in front of her. Yes that's right... just stand there, no need for sitting just yet, or at all.
OOC: The lesson has officially started, do not announce yourself arriving from this point onward, just pretend as if you've been here the whole time. Melanie shuffled to a spot closer to the flaming bush. She got cold so easily, and the plant was radiating a very pleasant warmth. Once she had heated through, she thought back to what she had read in her herbology book and ventured a timid guess.
"Er, professor, I believe fire seeds are mainly used as a potion ingredient, but", she hesitated, hoping she had this second part right, "they can also be used to assist in hatching dragon eggs because of the extreme heat they provide."

Hmm it was a fireseed bush?!
So much for having an idea of what it might be, thought at least his knowledge of plants and potions kept it from calling it dittany. At it wasn't like fireseed bushes were a staple in his parents' garden. Okay now that it was identified, Gideon listened to what was asked next...the uses of the seed. Well he knew about its use in potions, he might have remembered something about that either in reading for class or from his father, but there had to be other uses.
"You can use it as a light source, either stable or as a torch as you move as long as you are careful about not burning yourself," the fifth year replied offering his first idea before going further. "You can also use them to defend against Devil's Snare since that plant likes neither the light nor heat that a fireseed produces." The class had been nearly obsessed with Devil's Snare at the beginning of the lesson so why not bring it back into focus.

Uhhh... ".. umm no, not quite." And it wasn't THAT dark, yet.
She for one would not want to be stuck in a greenhouse without vision... even with her fondness of flesh-eaters. Seren most certainly preferred seeing them.
"Nope, it's just ivy dear... but certainly some plants cannot tolerate sunlight."
"Nope... it's just regular wizarding creeping ivy. But certainly some plants require little to no sunlight."
... did the Ravenclaw just contradict herself? "Perhaps you need to gather your thoughts."
"Yes, very good."
"Yes very good, sunlight has the ability to make some plants rather ill."
"Yes very good," she began to say... and then the Ravenclaw blurt out a bunch of numbers which really weren't necessary.
"Interesting thought, and yes some plants are very shy which is why they're seldom seen." ... and because they hide in the dark.
Was she talking about a specific plant?... "Light does have the ability to kill plants, but for the most part it would just make them ill."
"Mmm yes, you're sort of on the right track. Some plants do thrive on sunlight and seek it out, much like this ivy, but then there are plants that do not like the sunlight." The idea was there... she just needed to organise her thoughts.
... again. She hadn't asked to identify the plant.
"Low light yes, good good."
"That might be the case with some, but not for the creeping ivy, it's rather docile whether its in sunlight or darkness."
"Mm no, but there are plants that light up, so you're on the right track."
This students answer confused her a bit. Escaping? take up much space?... "Yes the ivy is covering the window, but why might this be a good thing?" What use is a greenhouse without sunlight?
"Very good."
Another student to contradict themselves. If the ivy was light sensitive, then why would it expose itself to light by getting closer to it? "Mm not quite, think about it a little more."
Merlin this girl talked too much. Seren tried not to tune out, struggling to pay attention. "... uuhh yes, some plants are sensitive to sunlight."
Good, right, moving on.
... light house? they were in a light house? "I think you mean greenhouse dear, and yes you're right."
"
"Yes that's right, though you're wrong about the ivy, it is especially fond of light, hence why it makes itself so available to it by climbing the walls."
Ooohh, if someone knew her well enough? Well he wasn't wrong. "Yes absolutely correct."
"Yes very good." ... of course it wasn't so much that yes, the ivy was blocking the light, but why you would want a greenhouse without light.
... no it was not devils snare... didn't students pay attention. "It's creeping ivy dear, nothing more."
But at least she was sort of on the right track. "The ivy itself is definitely attracted to sunlight, but what about the other plants in here?"
"That's a possibility, good answer."
Finally something out of the box!
"Mmhhmm, good good."
"Yes, very good."
"Indeed many of them would. Most of the plants in this greenhouse are sensitive to light, and therefore too much sunlight would make them ill and yes they would certainly be burnt and dehydrated."
"Yes, very good Kennedy."

"It's creeping ivy dear... and we're not discussing the plant, we are discussing why the greenhouse is dark.. what use could we have for a greenhouse with little or no light?"
Pay... attention...
"No dear, we've established it's creeping ivy... the question was why is the greenhouse dark? what use is a dark greenhouse?"
Seren raised an eyebrow. Ma'am? again.. she didn't comment. "Yes certainly, some plants prefer the darkness."
"Yes very good."
He seemed to get the gist of it.
Eino's answer appeared to be well thought out, but he was sort of missing the point. Perhaps he has been neglecting his studies somewhat. "The ivy is certainly rather fond of sunlight, hence why it's making itself so available to it by climbing the surface of the greenhouse. But I want you to think about why we would allow it to do so. If plants thrive in sunlight, then what does it mean for the other inhabitants of this greenhouse?"
"Yes very good."
Seren eyed the enthusiastic girl and then eyes the ivy.. "That is true... but not for the ivy, though it is certainly applicable to many of the other plants in this greenhouse."
Again it seemed as though Alyssa was reading from her diary or something.... did she ever stop to breathe?
Having had difficulty keeping up with the girls speech, Seren did manage to hone in on a part of it. "Absolutely, some plants, particularly various species of flesh eating trees have the tendency to be a bit... abrasive in the sunlight, so the darkness can be utilised to manage plant behaviour."
"Mm yes certainly."
"Yes, very good."
"No dear, like I said, it's just creeping ivy, the question was why is it dark in here? so how would be benefit from a greenhouse without sunlight."
... "try to keep up."
"A couple of them might be," she said with a nod. She wouldn't say for certain... not wanting to scare anyone just yet.
Again? not the plant!

Seren couldn't help but laugh lightly. Yes, very blunt, but yes. "And how might this be a good thing?"

The ONLY... oh no no no... "I'm afraid you're wrong there, devils snare is not the ONLY vine plant that cannot handle sunlight, I suggest you do some more research before you make such assumptions."

"Yes, very good."

Taking a moment to let herself breathe... Seren wondered if she should go back to basics. Swatting away some of the creeping ivy that was attempting to entangle itself in her hair, she took a small step forward to place some distance between them.
"So I have mentioned previously, this is not a devils snare... it is merely creeping ivy.... now many of you were on the right track as to why the greenhouse has little light. Firstly, because our creeping ivy friend here is very fond of light an so it makes itself available to it by climbing the glass walls. Now the thing you should be considering is what use do we have for a greenhouse with little light. Seeing as most plants require sunlight to grow..."
Seren paused briefly to let this information sink in. Hopefully the students had their listening hats on now. "Many of you were able to tell me that some plants are sensitive to light and therefore prefer dark and often damp conditions, and this is correct. But aside from that, darkness also impacts some plants and trees by influencing their behaviour, calming them down so to speak."
"Today I want us to have a look at a couple of different plants... not the ivy." She gave them all a look. The ivy played its role in here... keeping things dark, but now it was time to check out the main attraction for the day.
"Now if you'll all follow me please, keep close, and try not to walk into each other... and don't touch anything unless I say so." It was dark after all, and they were going deeper into the greenhouse.
The darkness began to intensify as they made their way deeper, but then soon began to glow a warm redish-orange.
After walking some way down a path, with pots and flowerbeds of plants skirting the area with the occasional rustling of leaves, Seren came to a halt. The strange glow seemed to be coming from a small, old, leafless looking tree. At the base of the tree a few low flames can be seen flickering to indicate a burning.
"Can anybody identify this particular plant?" she asked. "Simply name it, I don't need to know its entire history."

Harvey followed the professor and the other students to where they were supposed to go.. being careful to follow the professor's instructions or not walking into anyone.. and he never touched any plant he didnt know.. the professor didnt need an accident on her hands.. he then saw the plant that was before him and he was amazed at it.. he had yet to see many wonders of the magical world.. and this plant was one of them. He could not identify it but at the same time he could not keep his eyes away from it. but he was still listening to the professor and the students around him..

Seren could have died of laughter, but of course she wouldn't permit herself to laugh in front of a student, not when it was at their expense. "Um no dear... interesting guess though."
"Uhh nope, I think you'll find a wiggen tree is a fair bit larger than this for starters," she mused eyeing the waist high specimen.
Uhhh muggle thing? "Aurora... I'm a herbologist, not a muggle studies specialist."
She shook her head briefly... yikes.
"Well now that certainly would be a sight to see... but no, it's not an Alder tree." Another unique thought though.
Oohh now this one was close.. on the right track at least. "Sort of... not quite," she replied.
"Interesting thought, but no it's a wee bit short to be a want tree."
And then there were answers that came out of nowhere. How did they come to that conclusion?

... "No... it's definitely not Dittany... Dittany is a a herb, and despite its reputation as the burning bush, it does not actually burn.." unless you set it on fire, which she wouldn't recommend. "It's the herbs colour and flammable vapours which earn it that title."
And finally at long last... a few students managed to identify the specimen correctly.

Seren paused briefly to let the students absorb this information and observe the plant a little longer. "If you look close enough you can see that the fire seeds grow along the branches." ... slightly camouflaged by the branches glow.
"Though the plant is not considered dangerous, you should exercise great caution when working with them so that you do not burn yourself."
"Can anybody hazard a guess as to what the uses are for the Fire Seeds?"

Harvey looked at the professor as she asked the next question.. and he looked back at the plant.. and looked it over.. the branches, the glowing the seeds... he thought about what the seeds could be used for.. he could not think of many things so he just said whatever came into his head he put up his hand "I guess it could be used for a Potion.. or medicinal uses.. somthing along those lines.. " he said as he looked over the plant again.. but no more answers came to mind so he left it at that

Keefer smacked his forehead with his palm. Of course! Fire seed... How could I have forgotten? He was turning out to be a pretty poor NEWT student. He was at the front, so he bent forward a bit and peered at the branches. Sure enough, there were the seeds. And sure enough, his face was starting to get rather warm. Not wanting his eyebrows to singe, he backed away.
Then it was question time again. Why can't I remember this...? he wondered. After all, he had to study this stuff for OWLs last year. Then again, he had an entire summer for it to leak out of his head, especially given that he spent the holiday cramming Quidditch into every empty reservoir of his brain. Think Keef... what would you use fire seeds for? His head was getting warm, and he felt like he was beating his brain against his skull to no avail. Man, I'm confused. Wait a minute...
He raised both hands eagerly. "Professor, could fire seeds be used in certain potions? Maybe they could be used to produce heat, like for the Pepperup Potion when steam comes out of your ears? Or perhaps in Befuddlement Draughts or similar, where the drinker can become hotheaded or reckless?" All of this was a guess, so he was fully expecting to get a solid "No" for an answer.

Fire seed bushes were pretty! They were all... warm... and glowy. Anya liked them. She also thought it was interesting that they were named after how they looked.
Hmm... the uses of the seeds? She thought for a moment before raising her hand. "You can use the seeds to make little fire seed bush...lings."

August had followed Professor Bentley and the rest of the students into the further part of the Greenhouse, into the dark that was now turning orange. Ooohhh.
August stared at the small dead-looking tree that was seemed to be on fire. He listened curiously as she began to explain the thing that was called a Fire-seed bush. It certainly was interesting. "Professor where do plants like this occur naturally if they are so flammable?" The Gryffindor was rather confused about this.
What were they used for? "Professor Bentley, could they be used to help raise and breed Fire-crabs. I read that they are fond of heat and flames."
Jezzabelle could have kicked herself then and there and a blush crept across her cheeks. How could she be wrong two time in a row. It was almost as if she was failing just a little. Like the school was clouding her mind. She stared at the plant. Fire Seed Bush. What could the seeds be used for.
Jezzabelle raised her hand, "Maybe the seeds could be used to make firewhiskey? Almost like making coffee. Grind them up and make a drink." What else could the be used for. Something more serious and that might actually me correct. "You could also probably use the heat to keep things warm. Anything warm actually which could range from dragon eggs, to food, to yourself." Maybe that's why some dragon's breathed fire. Osmosis.

Well as soon as Bentley said it was a Fire Seed Bush, it was pretty obvious. It was on fire. And there were seeds on it. Duh. It rang a bell in Ellie's head, too. Like she'd read about it somewhere.
But to Ellie, despite what the professor said, the plant seemed dangerous. It was on fire, for Merlin's sake. One would probably have to use the Glacius charm before trying to touch that thing. Not that Ellie would touch it.
Now it's purposes... Ellie knew she read something about fire seeds somewhere... She furrowed her brows and thought... and thought... "OH!" Ellie flailed and shot her hand up. "Professor, they're used in Dragon breeding. When Dragon babies are still in the egg, their mother's breathe fire on them to keep them hot. But when you're raising your own dragon - which would be a psychotic thing to do - you have to use these fire seeds to keep them hot enough. Just as if its mother was breathing fire on them." Aaaand a deep breath. Whew. That was exciting.
"Oh, and they're also used in some potions, but it's not very common." Yup.

So it wasn't a wand tree. Oh well, shrugging her incorrect guess off. At least she tried, but it was a fire seed bush apparently. And now what could you do with Fire seeds? Oo, a mischievous grin appeared suddenly at the thought causing Kimalia once again to raise her hand. "Other than for planting, assuming they're hot on contact they would make great projectile weapons if aimed correctly." Just a simple throw into someone's face and bam! Probably a good thing that they aren't simple to collect.

One answer was slightly obvious. He slowly raised his hand an spoke up quietly."I'm guessing it starts a fire an keeps going as one keeps it lit, right? Can't it also be used in some sort of potions?" But then Adam was slightly confused. Fire in a potion-well that was if what he mentioned were correct- couldn't fire in a potion be a possibly bad thought.
"Professor, if it can be used in a potion would it be used for good reasons, as remedies or would it be more likely to used as a poisonous potion? An, if it's fire, an candles are a sort of tiny floatable fire, can a fire seed be incased in a bottle an be kept lit, or does it just only work in the open air?"

Lea's eyes widened with admiration the moment she saw the glow of the little tree like thing. Yeah, it looked like it was a dead tree burning or something but it was ALIVE. That was SO COOL. And it had that pretty glow. The little Gryffindor was growing to be a HUGE FAN of this Fire Seed Bush.
Unable to help it, she took several steps forward to look closer, pushing people out of her way a little within the process. ''Wow!!! Woooow!!'' Who cared what it was used for? It was PRETTY!!! Still, Lea Carter would provide her own idea.
''Maybe food for Salamanders?'' Yup. She knew those fiery lizards and she wanted to keep one as a pet. As well as THIS BUSH! ''Professor...professor!!! Please!!! Can i put a little one of this on my window in the dormitory? Please, can i have a little piece to look after?''
It could glow at night too. Soooo pretty.

Alex listened to his classmates rattle off answers and after a few moments, he too raised his hand. "I heard somewhere that fire seeds are a good way to keep salamanders warm. Cause they're cold blooded and like to be around fire and all that," he explained.

So it wasn't Dittany? Darn it, looked like she needed to study more Herboloy for her NEWTs than she had thought she did.
She raised her hand now. "It's used to make fires? And as an ingredient for potions?" She was not sure what potions, but heck anything could be put into one just about. o_O
Thinking about all the plants in the herbology room, it was true that a lot of them had something that was used for potions, which is why Herbology was important for Potions. Her interest grew since she had never seen one before and she stepped forward without realizing, but then stopped her self and turned when she heard the question." Professor the seeds are used for potions. Many antidotes for uncommon poisons use fire seeds." she turned back to look at the glowing plant.

Vickers couldn't help but get lost in the glow of the fire seed bush. There was just something very comforting about it, although he knows that the warmth it gives can also burn when not dealt with properly. He glanced at his notes and looked up the Professor when she asked her next question. Raising his hand he replied " Fire seeds are used as a potion ingredient..." yup standard answer in ".... alternatively it could also be used to either start a fire or maintain the temperature around the hearth. It can also be used for weaponry. Fired from a projectile it can be launched over a distance and set something on fire." Not that he would do it. No no no, he's a good boy.

Fire seeds were small so they could be used for a wide variety of fire-related uses in the magical world. Eino raised his hand. "I heard they are used in some of Dr. Filibuster's magical fireworks, and they are also used to create fake Gubraithian Fires." He had been invited to go to one of those bizzares stores over the summer that sold things people wanted but didn't really need. He had seen the fake gubraithian fire lanterns, and they were quite neat, but not very useful.
Fire seeds. Sophie thought she remembered them having something to do with dragons. Sophie patiently waited to be called on.
"I heard fire seeds can be used for hatching dragon eggs," she paused and then remembered what else they are used for, "And they are used in some potions. Sophie said confidently.

Sierra glanced toward a few of the students who'd guessed correctly. Well pin a rose on their nose! She looked for a few seconds longer then turned back to the professor. For the most part, she already knew about Fire Seed Bushes, but she tuned in to the lesson anyway.
Hazard a guess?! What exactly did that mean? Hmm? Guessing that it meant 'make a guess', Sierra raised her hand. "Well, they're found a lot in dark caves, so the most obvious answer is that they give light. Heat, too...," she said. There had to be more than that, though. "What about protection, too? There's lots of plants and creatures that hate fire, so the little seeds would help there." There'd been that whole Devil's Snare mention at the beginning of class. That was one example of how the seeds could be used for protection. "Oh, ...you know what else? Potions. They're good ingredients."

Elise scratched her head, staring at the bush. It was preeeeeeeeeeety. Very pretty. Nodding, she raised her hand.
"They're used in Dragon Breeding," she beamed. "Well... When you don't have a dragon, you'd need something to keep the egg warm enough to hatch. That;s what you use them for."
Gwen had no idea what the uses of fire seeds were, but made a guess, based on their name and what Professor Bentley told them.
"Maybe fire seeds are highly inflammable and therefore good for making fires?"

Zack felt really irritated wearing those gloves on his hand. Why does thing have to get so off all the time. Weren't working with plants turn out to be fun anymore. He observed the plant from a distance so he couldn't have any more trouble other than his gloves. Those are some trees there. It didn't look like it had leaves. Leafless.
He had fun here looking at the tree and admiring it. At least he didn't had to sit in a class, that would have bored him to death and in few minutes e would be sleeping. As he was busy looking at the tree he notice the students giving out answers to the professor. Wait what had the professor ask?
He heard them giving some explaining on the use of fire seed. Maybe that’s what the professor might have asked them. He knew this one, his dad had once mentioned about fire seed, maybe he could say that. He raised his hand to the professor and said "Professor, Fire seed from the Fire seed plant and used to raise the temperature in a room or in some particular area in the room. It's mostly used to have a warm atmosphere. It’s used in potions as well. To collect them one can use the Glacius Charm or just wait and collect them when the temperature gets low." he said took he hand dawn.
