MJ raised her hand. "Because, technically, everyone HAS got the ability to kill. It's just whether you choose to use it or not. It's whether you have the capacity to kill. But the ability is always there, lurking, underneath." She put her hand down and looked at the Professor. In the privacy of her mind, MJ thought: Did you want us to experiment with that?

elllla_Wtwins 10-14-2011 03:22 PM

Thea shrugged as she raised her eyebrows. Raising her hand, she sighed. 'It's freewill. We could all use it, but would we?' She smiled. 'If you would or not, could sortof do with how you've been raised, how you've been treated.' Thea quickly put down her hand. Wait. Was this the sort of answer? Oh Merlin..

laurange 10-14-2011 03:42 PM

Elise raised her hand.

"We have our emotions, which are really strong. If you're angry enough you could just lunge at a person and kill them, without pulling a wand."

Which is what Muggles do.

They weren't mind readers, so it was almost impossible for them to figure it out. "However it does have something to do with today's lesson, but it is not really about killing curses." This wasn't DADA. He didn't need to teach them all of that.

"I wrote that killing any of your classmates was not allowed not because all of you are physically able to use the killing curse." No. Because that too extreme anger...and skill. "But because all of you have the equipment too." He paused. "What do you think I mean by that" This question should be easier to answer.

EDIT: OOC: Alright guys! Taking a break. Class will continue again tomorrow at around 4pm EST. Try not to be too chatty please! Also no editing posts.

Scott picked up his wand, and then toyed with the idea it was about that. He let this slip though, and thought of something a bit more profound.
He raised his hand. "Is it because an educated murderer is more dangerous than an uneducated one?" Maybe not. "And that our emotions have more control over us than anything else"

Magical Soul 10-14-2011 06:51 PM

Louisa raised her eyebrows... and then her hand in order to answer, "It's not necessarily the killing curse that kills a person, sir. Any spell might lead to fatal injury or series of injuries that'd cause death. A wand is the only equipment I can think of."

"I meant killing as in killing. You figure out what I meant." Scabior said dryly. Really, REALLY? Did he have to explain that? He wasn't going to.

She sunk just a bit lower in her seat when people began focusing on the wand being the tool for them to be able to kill someone. She wasn't convinced that that was the case. You needed something more to be able to perform the spell. "I see everyone's point about a wand being a tool," Kurumi said softly with her hand raised in the air. "But...I think our ability to feel is perhaps a larger tool." She paused. This was going to get awkward really fast. "There is a story in Japan about groups of students our age that are taken to an island by the government and told that they now have to kill off their classmates. They were each given a bag with some sort of weapon - some had fans or frying pans - and were told they had three days to be the last remaining student. Only one was allowed to survive or else the collars they wore around their necks would explode and kill them all. They killed best friends, girlfriends, boyfriends, their own classmates...all because they feared dying themselves. You may have a wand in your hand, but unless you feel and put the emotions behind it, you won't be able to perform the spell at all..."

Merlin...was this man going to make up a Battle Royale-esque situation?

The thing about Kurumi was that...she spoke to much. Scabior resisted rolling his eyes as she went on about some story. Really, it was interesting...or..more so depressing. But he did NOT need to know all that. "Listen, Miss Hollingberry. Sometimes quality is better than quantity" And he would leave it at all.

-----------------

"Now, all of you who recognized the wand as the equipment, a pat on the back for you. And to those of you, who said something about our minds, emotions, inner workings, consciences so on and so forth, pats for you too. And for those of you who said both? Well you are geniuses in the making then aren't you?" He had only asked because he wanted to hear what everyone thought. But he wasn't going to correct them all just yet.

"As wizards-or witches, our wands and our minds are our best pieces of equipment- or weapons that we have. Today however we are going to be focusing on the wand and the making of the wand." He looked around the classroom. Still paying attention? "I don't want you lot to forget about our minds though. We will focus on that as well as other things" like the killing curse "in the next class."

"Because of your wands, you are all technically able to use the killing curse. Or any other curses or any other charms or spells. Not saying that you can produce every single spell at the moment, or that you can even issue a killing curse. But you are all technically able to." And now he was done talking about the killing curse. Really...it had just been a lead to his major point and some students looked like they were ready to make a run for it. "What do you lot know about wands?"

Aaron wasn't sure whether he was supposed to fear this teacher or think he was cool. Maybe both. But scary too. Just a little bit.
Not that he would admit it, he was too busy trying to make sense of the professors words. This was difficult. Also, why would they kill people? Having fun was too much fun!

What he knew about wands? Well, they were sticks. And were magicky.
'They choose us, we don't choose our wands, professor.' Aaron said, remembering that from when he had bought his wand.

Minerva raised her hand. "Well I know that wands are made of many different materials and that the wand picks the wizard in the same way the wizard tries to choose the wand."

Minnie had said it all, wand material and choosing of the wand. Harvey put up his hand "There are different cores in wands."

:claw:

DH Vixen 10-14-2011 09:01 PM

Mina remained quiet as she took notes. There had been answers flying around during the previous questions and there was no need to keep repeating the same answer over and over again. Jotting down small notes as each suggestion was offered, she kept her ears open for more.

Setting her quill down, she looked up and raised her hand. "Wands can reaact differently to other wizards and no wand is exactly like the another. Just as the wand chooses the wizard, it chooses how it will work for said wizard. There is an ownership over a wand and if you aren't its owner, it may never work its proper way." That sounded very wording to her, but she did hope it made sense all the same.

elllla_Wtwins 10-14-2011 09:04 PM

Wands? Hrm. 'They all have a core. Such as unicorn hair, or..' She paused, twirling a piece of hair around her finger. 'Veela hair!' She nodded. 'And sometimes, they can connect. Such as when they meet their brothers.' Everyone knew the story of Harry Potter, so hopefully the professor would understand about the connection thingy. She frowned slightly as she tried to remember the correct term for it. 'Priori Incantatem!'

lazykitty 10-14-2011 09:06 PM

So all that talk about killing and they were just going to talk about wands? Not famous wizard killers or anything like that? Okay then…

Sky raised her hand. "Some wand cores are stronger then others," she answered. She thought she remembered reading that somewhere. "It's also said that you can tell a lot about person by looking at the wood their wand is made of." Personally, Sky didn't believe it.

Deezerz 10-14-2011 09:08 PM

Kennedy raised his hand, "Wands are made out of different cores such as maticore hair, have different heights, and different woods and some are better than others in different subjects." Like some were better at Charms and others at hexes, or like his at defending. "No two wands are alike." And that was a true fact.

Roselyn 10-14-2011 09:10 PM

Technically able to...

Somehow this reminded her of that weird defense against the darks arts professor they had awhile back and teaching them about those unforgiveables. Specifically the cruciatus. Yet the big moment that was now stuck on repeat in her mind were the spiders. Soooooo many spiders in that class. Scabior was cool enough not to bring spiders into his class RIGHT!??!

As people spoke about wands, Evelyn tried to dig up some new information she could remember that hasn't been said before raising her hand. "Well just like how the wand chooses the wizard..." And all that jazz. "They can switch allegiances as well from one wizard to the other. Usually if the current owner of the wand is disarmed or killed, than it switches it allegiance to the attacker."

"What do you lot know about wands?"

The sneaking suspicion that Professor Scabior was being sarcastic with his comment to her and the others who had mentioned both aspects of how any one of them had the capability to cast the Killing curse crept into Stellas mind, but she pushed it back. As long as they got points, he coudl try to be as mean as he wanted. Positive thinking at work, again, although she had to admit she was happier not speaking about the Unforgivables. As such, she took a breath once he'd moved on to a simple discussion of wands, contemplating her answer before raising her hand again. There was no need to say anything stupid, even if her idea of stupid was obviously different than the professor's.

"The wand chooses the wizard, like others have said. Also, one can actually bend the will of a specific wand to themselves, if they overcome the original owner in battle, or by some other means. A person can't just steal a wand and expect it to work for them, because of the individual magic that wands themselves hold, their particular blend of wand woods, cores, and the charms that combine them," she finally said. Hopefully Professor Scabior wasn't going to call her an encyclopedia or something, since she was just answering the question. Plus, it wasn't like she was saying everything that existed regarding wandlore.

Granger1814 10-14-2011 09:22 PM

Kourt's eyes momentarily narrowed at the professor's response. Well jeez, he didn't have to respond in the big, scary man, mean voice. She remained quiet for a few moments, musing over what she knew about wands. Cores...yes, and that the wand chose the witch/wizard. But those had been said.

Finally, she raised her hand again. "The wand is a medium in which a witch or wizard channels their magic through."

WeasleyGirl 10-14-2011 09:35 PM

Scabior was really scary and surprisingly he hadn't taken points yet and hopefully he would keep it that way. So, they were going to talk about wands? Interesting.

What did he knew about wands? He raised his hand. "Well, wands are used to perform magic, even though you can perform magic without a wand but it's very difficult. They are made of different types of woods and cores, also the wand chooses the wizard" he nodded.

Growing up in a Pureblood household had given Keefer an edge in this department--wandlore. He raised his hand eagerly. "Professor, there's all sorts of sayings in the wizarding world about wands. Like 'wand of elder, never prosper.' I guess a disproportionate amount of Dark wizards have had wands made of elder wood? Supposedly the different wand woods say something about the personality of the owners. Is there any factual basis for that, or is it just a bunch of malarky?"

Excellent word, malarky.

Jezabel Black 10-14-2011 09:55 PM

Jez raised her hand confidently. Wands! Finally, a teacher was discussing wands! Jez loved wandlore, so anything to do with it made her happy. Maybe History of Magic wasn't going to be so bad after all. "Wands are a vital part of channeling a witch or wizard's magical powers, although it is possible to use magic without a wand. A wand needs wand wood, and it needs a core made from a magical creature - like a phoenix feather or such. But that magical creature needs to be powerful - for example, a unicorn hair would be better to use than a kneazle hair, because a unicorn is deemed more magical. The wand also choses the wizard to use it - if a wand doesn't like you, don't even bother casting the spell, it won't work very well." Jez stopped to breathe, looking expectantly at the professor.

Tori snickered softly to herself when Scabior basically called Kurumi long-winded. Well she was! Honestly, the girl did not need to recite an entire textbook chapter just for one question, especially for a common-sense question. Thank Merlin she wasn't a professor or all her classes would be filled with snoring students.

Anyway.

"There are two original wandmakers that I know of, sir. Gregorovich and Ollivander's, who has been making wands since like, 382 B.C." That was a longgggggg, longggggggggggggggggggg time. "Also, there's that famous saying about the Elder Wand: 'Wand of elder, never prosper.'" She nodded happily.

FireboltAvis88 10-14-2011 09:56 PM

Alyssa listened as the Professor replied to everyone's questions. "Something is definitely bothering him," Alyssa thought to herself. "I hope things work out for him."

But now on to the question. Alyssa thought about her answer, raised her hand and answered.

"Wands are made of wood. Wandmakers use the wood from different trees that grow in our world. Inside the core of the wand, wandmakers place elements usually belonging to magical creatures like dragon heartstrings or unicorn's blood. The combination of the wood used plus what is inside the wand can determine which kind of magic works well with it. The wand is like a living thing because it is able to recognize who is it's rightful owner. The wand works best for you only if you have it's allegiance."

GoldenSnake 10-14-2011 10:27 PM

Now, Victoria's kind of getting the hang of it. But she still doesn't get why they would kill classmates.

So now they're going to study the History of Wands? That's actually better than she expected History of Classmates and how they Killed one another. It also confused her how this is appropiate to younger students like the firsties who would probably be scared to death.

"Wands are made from branches of the trees. They each have a core inside containing a piece from a creature's. The different type of wood, length, and core effects how your spell work turns out and it works for you." answered Victoria in one big breath.

Urgh. That saying. If Scabior had a wand made out of elder he would hate that saying. Seeing as he didn't- he only disliked it because of all the assumptions it created. "Yes. Gregorovich and Ollivander both famous wand makers. In fact the Ollivander family is famous for making wands."

"Unicorn blood? Never heard of that one...personally I would use unicorn blood for something much more useful than a wand." Yeah. Did you know much much galleons unicorn blood was worth?

"So you all know something about wands. But does anyone know the name of the branch of magic that actually studies wands?" Perhaps they knew this as well. He didn't doubt it. "Or can anyone give me the name of a wand maker other than Gregorovitch and the Garrick Ollivander?"

This Aaron actually knew. That was wandlore. Right?
'Wandlore, isn't it?' For a few days after buying his wand, Aaron had been convinced that he was going to be like Ollivander.
But then he went to school and realised that was way too difficult. Still, he remembered some useful facts.

"Wouldn't that be Wandlore,Professor..." Gideon answered after raising his hand, having finished up writing his notes on what had previously been mentioned and confirmed by the professor. He thought for a moment on whether or not he knew of any other wandmakers but the only ones he could think of were the ones around when he first was chosen for his wand and he didn't know their names.

For all he knew they were Olivanders as well just not the one mentioned by the man.
