Default HoM: Lesson One

As you enter the History of Magic classroom you notice that shockingly nothing has been moved around or changed. Each desk has been left in exactly the same state it had been in the year before. However, a piece of parchment is left on each of the desks.

Up at the front of the classroom Professor Scabior leans on the front of his desk, and is lazily pointing to a large note, that is neatly written on the board behind him.

Quote:
Please write your name, year and house on the parchment. Each parchment is charmed to turn into a name plate so once you are finished lay it back on the desk.

Ohh, ...great. Way to ignore me, Scabior. With an unamused expression on her face, Sierra raised her hand to answer the next question. "He killed over all thanks to Dargon Pox," she said. "He died before they could even make a cure for it." She lowered her hand then added, "The disease causes a green tint on your skin, and since he was the first person to die from it, maybe he was also one of the first to have it. So maybe he was known as the only green person alive, as well..." Hmm. Made sense to her.

And no, by that i do not mean that eating apples will keep you from being sick. I mean that apples will keep Healers away." And there was a BIG difference between the two.

He looked around."That idea that the expression was 19th century is completely wrong. In the 19th century was when Muggles heard the expression and coined it as their own, because as we all know, muggles steal a bunch of wizarding ideas.. This expression actually dates back to way before that to the 14th century. Muggles took it in the sense that apples had properties which would help them from getting sick. The expression was actually what let Muggles to continue research on apples." But the whole Muggle idea wasn't the point here. "In the 14th century. This expression was created by a wizard who rarely gets credited for it named Chauncey Oldridge." Poor old Chauncey. "He is actually famous for something else which ties into the creation of the expression." He nodded his head. " Who knows what that is?"
Not me... Kynthia thought. She had no idea who that Chesney guy was. She had never even heard his name before Professor Scabior said it just now. He must have liked apples though...

Penny didn't know much about Chauncey Oldridge, but what she did know had already been said..

Putting her hand in the air, she said, "Professor, I know he was the first person to die from Dragon Pox in 1379 aged 47.... He is also on Chocolate Frog cards", then Penny drew blank..lowering her hand again..

What? What did the first man to die of Dragon Pox have anything to do with apples? And why would he want to keep the healer away? Presley stared pretty blankly. Finally she raised her hand. "Did he farm apples, sir?" He might have. In fact, hadn't Presley heard that somewhere before? "He was the first known case of death by Dragon Pox, sir."

But that seemed to be a talk for another day and another time. The class had moved onto ... apples?

Blinking Charner sort of stared at the Professor. Well this was all extremely fascinating. From what she gathered Healers didn't like apples. Maybe it was some sort of weird allergy or something. Raising her hand, she stretched her fingers way up. "Was he an apple orchid farmer?" He would have to be around apples to have coined the expression.
Professor Scabior chuckled"No, no he wasn't but that's a good guess."

Oh wait! She had heard of him before. But when? "Didn't he get some sort of disease and die?" But what disease was it!? "Chicken pox?... NO WAIT. Dragon pox?" The only reason she remembered that was that it was such a funny sounding disease. Dragon pox. Silly wizards.
"Dragon Pox. Yes. Far more deadly than the Muggle disease Chicken Pox." Although, neither were quite deadly in this day and age.

Well, wait he did something else tied to apples? "Professor was Oldridge an apple farmer?" the Gryffindor asked innocently. That was the only other thing he could think of that had to do with apples; well except the invention of apple pie, and if a wizard had done that, he wouldn't know what to do.
The Professor didn't even try to hide his smirk."No, no, no. But wonderful guess all the same, since we are still on the topic of the apple expession."

If he was he might have to ask his aunt more about him if she knew as a healer of Mungo's.
Oh! A new guess! "No he wasn't! But nice guess." Everett guess that Mr. Gert was trying to think why someone would create the expression. Made perfect sense!

"Um," she raised her hand, "Chauncey was the first victim to die of dragon pox in 1379, like waaaaay before the cure had been invented."

But how did this relate to apples? "Perhaps Chauncey caught dragon pox from eating a bad apple?"
"That he was! Good job in knowing the exact date as well." That couldn't have been in the book he had given her. Perhaps she had studied other texts as well? "Nice guess but not quite."

She thought about the professor's question for a minute. She thought he was the one with dragon pox. She raised her hand. "I think he had Dragon Pox, professor." Then she thought some more. The difference between keeping healthy and keeping Healer's away… "Did he throw apples at the Healers trying to help him?"
Everett's mouth literally dropped. He had never expected anyone to actually KNOW the story behind it. Especially a first year! Or maybe had she guessed? Either way. "Excellent job Miss Carter-Hope. Excellent." Seriously. Excellent!!

But she had heard of this Chauncey dude. He just wasn't all high and mighty on the importance list in her opinion. He got sick, and died. So did a million other people.

"He was the first person to become sick with what we all know as dragon pox." she said after raising her hand and after she heard Kim's answer. Huh, that would make sense, but it didn't make sense to her that it'd fit the fact that apparently...apples literally kept the healers away. Now, she couldn't remember a single fact about apples that was blurted out a few minutes before, but she did have her own guess. "Maybe this Chauncey guy liked to eat apples and apparently this sickness absorbs into them."

THAT made sense to her.
"Yes, he was! And..." Everett blinked. He quite liked apples...that would be alarming if the sickness absorbed into the apple....because then he would be eating the apple...and catching the sickness again...what? "No...not quite...not at all actually..nice guess though." He blinked again.

Kurumi blushed a bit and bowed her head at his comment before waiting to hear just who had coined the expression.

So, the expression WAS literally about apples. Interesting. While Kurumi had just rattled off fact after fact about apples, she still hadn't been entirely sure that the expression was going to be so literal.

Chauncey Oldridge? Kurumi thought she had heard that name before. Hadn't she seem him on a chocolate frog card? She remembered a wizarding with horrible green skin and pumps all over his body at least. The image of THAT on a chocolate frog card had been enough to make her lose her appetite, but she hadn't really read the description of he wizard on the back of the card for fear of losing her lunch. Still, Kurumi wanted to contribute something, so she slowly raised her hand. "He died of an illness that turned his skin a greenish purple tinge with bumps all over his body. The illness also caused him to shoot sparks out of his nose...but I am afraid the name escapes me at the moment."
Oh! She knew the symptoms of Dragon Pox too? For some reason Scabior wasn't surprised. He just nodded his head along as she spoke. "Good job. See that is useful information." But he wouldn't push it. "The illness was called Dragon Pox. Quite common for young wizard children."

This Slytherin didn't look amused. Everett raised a brow before she started to talk. "Correct. And he might have been the only green person alive but you never know..there is transfiguration for that." And that was not his subject.

---------

Time to move on! "So, just like a lot of you stated. Chauncey Oldridge was the first person to get the disease know as Dragon Pox. Dragon Pox of course is a semi-common Wizarding illness, sort of like chicken pox in the Muggle world, but instead your skin turns green and you get bumps all over you and you tend to sneeze out sparks." Just a little tibet for those who had no clue what Dragon Pox was.

"Now Miss Carter-Hope seems to have heard of the truth behind Mr. Chauncey Oldridge."

He paused. Yes, yes, it was story time. "Chauncey Oldridge had been working in Wales when he caught a cold. A nasty flu really. He stayed in bed rested for a day or two and went back out to work before the flu was cured. What happened next is a mystery even to me. But after that Chauncey began to feel sick. Horrible. Terrible. People started to make remarks that he was looking green, and he should see a Healer. But Chauncey turned everyone down. Stating that he did not need a Healer at all. As the days went by he started to get worse. Ugly giant bumps and lime green skin. Eventally, the people in his town were scared that the sickness could spread to them so they forced a Healer to go and diagnose him. So the Healer went and was making his way to Chauncey's house. Chauncey went down stairs to the front of his house, where conveniently a giant apple tree was planted. He picked up the biggest apple that had fallen from the tree and threw it right at his head. It hit the Healer pretty hard and he ran away. tThe Healer was annoyed. Didn't want to go back, but the people pressed him to try again the next day, so he did. This happened for two more days. And it could have very well happened for a third, if Chauncey hadn't died the morning of the third day."

Now he needed water. Scabior took a deep breath and tried to reorientate himself. "After he died a journal was discover. And Old Chauncey's last words were an apple a day, keeps the healer away." Everett grinned. No one had expected that-except the one first year- now had they?

Now he wanted to do a little recap. "So, as you can see. Expressions- even this one about the apples. May seem really...small and not really important to wizard history. But they actually do relate back to bigger moments in history, like the discovery of small pox or things like that. Even little moments in history are important." He looked down at his wrist. Still time! "Now I want everyone to STAND UP. Gryffindor's go to the back of the room, the corner to my left. Ravenclaw's, back of the room, corner to my right. Slytherin's up at the front, my left corner. And Hufflepuff the last corner up here, to my right." Gogogogo. NOW.

Amethyst blushed deeply, seeing that her answer was right. She got up and rushed to the front of the class to Mr. Scabior's right. She smiled confidently for the first time in a while.

She had been RIGHT! Sort of. He had an apple tree! She'd guessed apple farmer, but one tree was good enough for Chauncey. Presley stood, a little confused, and made her way to the back right corner where the Ravenclaws had been directed to gather.

Brooklyn stared at the professor as he spoke about Chauncey Oldridge and hos this guy was the first one to have Dragon Pox and all that. Sadly enough, she really didn't like History of Magic, having almost failed it during her homeschooling. Merlin, hopefully this guy could keep her awake and learning more than her mother and Waverly had.

EEEEEEEEEEP. What was this? The professor was separating them all into corners? She didn't like this. Little Brookie started at the professor, perplexed, before standing and heading toward the back left corner of the room. Now, what was he going to do to them all? GASP.

Nika raised an eyebrow out of shock. Heh. Well that's a good way to get rid of someone you don't like. Throwing apples at them. Why hadn't she thought of that earlier. Maybe Nika can try that on Lafay. But it would have to wait until Gryffindor's winning with house points. It's too risky right now.

Stand up? Nika jumped out of her seat and listened to the little instructions that were given. Oh so Gryffindors have to go to the back? Does Professor Scabior have something against the best house? Either way Nika skipped towards the back left corner and smiled as she waited for the rest of her lions to get up as well.

Nikolas took notes of the class as fast as he could because many answers were given and he couldn't remember them all. If someone read his notes they wouldn't understand because it was a complete mess that he would try to figure out later.

Scabior has ordered each house to separate in different directions. Nikolas put his quill between his note book and stood up and went to the front where the Slytherins were asked to gather.

Vashti had heard of Chauncey Oldridge and the whole dragon pox thing, of course. But she hadn't heard of the entire story, so she listened with rapt attention, the thought to try jotting it down in her notes not even registering in her mind. This was fascinating, this was! How in Merlin's name had she not heard of this before? And why had the meaning changed from something so specific and literal to more vague and general?

Just as the story ended and the thought that maybe she should record all this in her notes occurred to her, the professor was asking them to stand up and divide into their houses in various corners of the room. An activity? Fun!

So Vashti stood and moved toward the corner of the room that the Ravenclaws were supposed to gather in.

That had got to be the weirdest excuse to create an expression she had ever heard. She quite liked her own version of the story on how the apple would absorb the sickness somehow and possibly rain terror on whatever village Chauncey lived in. That was much more interesting.

Nevertheless, she wrote the story down in bullet notes in her notebook.

Now what they were doing next had the Slytherin looking up and around at everyone as the Professor gave orders to move. Why were they moving? Deciding to not question it, verbally or mentally, she sighed quietly instead, closed her notebook and stood up before moving to the front of the room to the left corner. Well, the Professor's left corner. That one there. The one with all the green and awesome people.

Whyyyy were they doing this?

Kurumi wrinkled her nose slightly. She didn't think that THAT information was more useful than what she had explained about house elves - especially given the current situation at Hogwarts. Still, Kurumi bowed her head and returned to her notes as he continued to speak.

The back of the room? Why did Kurumi feel like he wanted Gryffindors to be a far away from him as possible? Shrugging her shoulders, Kurumi grabbed a few pieces of parchment and her quill before heading to the back where she found a few of her housemates were already waiting. "Brooklyn, Ira, Nika," she said with a smile and a nod to each of them. Hopefully, they were not going to role play the discovery of Dragon Pox or anything like that. Coming up with their own stories about where expressions came from might be fun though. "I'm all ready to be the scribe if the situation calls for it." She twirled her quill in her hands.

two sides of the same coin

So he kept the healer away with an apple, literally. Desiree laughed inwardly a bit, it was pretty funny, but not very smart.. Seeing as he obviously needed a healer. She was about to start writing this all down when suddenly he told them to all get up.

What was going on..? Something fun hopefully. She obediently got out of her chair and joined the Slytherins in the front left corner, giving everyone already over the a quick smile.

...and exactly why were the Slytherins stuck up front with the Hufflepuffs?! Scabior could have stuck the Puffers in the back of the room with the Gryffindors, and then the Slytherins could have been up front with the Ravenclaws. ...but, nooooo. They just had to be stuck standing near the Puffers for who knew how long.

Sierra rose from her desk and made her way up to the front of the room. Once she got there, she sort of hung out toward the back while she waited for whatever was about to happen.

Professor Scabior's interesting story about Chauncey Oldridge found its way into Aiden's journal. She literally writes the whole story as Scabior told. That was tiring, writing as fast as the professor speaks... Not to mention that the story was quite long!

The Slytherins are moved to the front? With the Puffs? Seriously? Letting a heavy sigh, Aiden moves towards the end corner at the front of the class where she sees Head Girl Evelyn and Sierra are already there.

NOW.
Tori had gotten a 'good job' from the professor. A GOOD JOB. She was glowing at the praise. Psssh just look at her, the BEST STUDENT of history EVER in the HISTORY of HOGWARTS.

Ahem. Smirking with pride, Tori stood up from her desk and skipped --- literally, skipped --- to the front of the room. She stood real close to the professor (heehee) and waited for further instructions.

Wow. August was embarrased now. He should have kept the apple comment to himself and just waited because he was no where close. He made the notation 'Not an Apple farmer' in his notes before looking up to hear the right answer; in the form of a story.

o___O

"That's horrible." He said to himself, he had expected a better ending like the guy lived or something not that he dropped dead after assulting a healer over and over. Wizarding history seemed as if it may be a bit strange; fun to learn about just the same though.

Ok so now they were seperating, and as he was a Gryffindor, the third year stood up and scurried over to the back left corner.

Sky walked over to the Slytherin corner, still in shock that her wild guess had been absolutely correct. She had just expected Professor Scabior to chuckle and tell her she was close or be taken aback again. Wow.

Eino was writing down his notes at the speed of light, when the Professor told them to move around. He had to write them faster, which only made them look ugly and messy, but he could still read them. After that, he got up from his seat and quickly moved to where the Professor had assigned Ravenclaws to go, back of the room, right corner. He did so and encountered there a fairly large group of Ravenclaws, stiff and look startled. He could see that they would much rather be sitting on a chair and absorbing all the information, as opposed to stand up and do something that required movement. But learning was learning, and they looked eager to find out what they would be learning, nonetheless. Eino nodded as he approached them then waited to hear what the Professor had prepared for them.
