" Mudblood is a slang expression for muggleborns." Dun dun duunnnnn. She was serious, though, She was almost a muggleborn so no need to fuss. " It is not the nicest thing to say but it is an expression." She was up daring the professor to say otherwise.

Pixxi's threw her hand enthustiasticly in the air and was ready to answer, "Oh, I know a saying Professor! It's 'Merlin's Beard'. I guess it's from... Merlin?" What a stupid way to finish the sentence.
To make matters worse, she suddenly realized that her hand was still raised very high, so she quickly put it down and her smile faltered a bit. She felt kind of stupid. 'Merlin's Beard' isn't exactly a very creative answer so she racked her brain for other wizard expressions. She remembered something her nan used to say when she was very little and someone had done something to upset her, "There's also the saying 'in the name of Merlin' which also is about Merlin. And I believe he was the first known wizard, so I guess... I guess we use his name as he is sort of the... Beginning of it all. The person we put all our believes in. I mean... If that counts as wizard expressions?" She asked unsurely.

But that doesn't deserve to be put on the board. Instead that will result in two more points off Slytherin house." If the Slytherin's wanted to be cheeky they could be. He would just keep taking more and more points away. "And not the one that Mr. Broadmoor gave. Because Gandalf is a fictional character." He eyed the boy. Not sure if he was trying to cause trouble or not. "So, good job to everyone who answered." He looked at the board. A lot of people actually did answer. "And excellent job to Miss Stone, Miss Greenwell, Miss Wilson, Miss Odessa, Mr. Goldstein, Miss Fanster, Mr. Fitzgerald, and Miss Ashwin. I've made their answers more noticeable." He pointed to the board. If they wanted to write this down they were free too. Could probably help them. "Now you might wonder, what makes their answers different than most of these ones. Theres not that much of a difference. But I want you all to look at the board again. Notice, may of the events there are ones that most people in the wizarding world know of. Many of the people, are people who some of you have heard about since you could talk. There is Voldemort. Clearly one of the biggest dark wizards of all time. Yet so was say Herpo the Foul but I do not see his name up there. Merlin was mentioned, but not Merwyn the Malucious who is just as great.Harry Potter? That's nice. I rather see Norvel Twonk. And the great Albus Dumbledore. Fantastic headmaster. But so was Ambrose Swott. And of course everyone knows the history of the second Wizarding War. But does anyone know the history of the house elves working in the kitchens?" Everett paused. Trying to allow the students to soak everything in. Hopefully they weren't already lost. "Chances are, many of the people I have mentioned, none of you have heard of. Which is a bad thing. When learning history we need to look beyond even 70 or 80 years ago, because the events that took place 70 or 80 years ago are repeats of things that happened centuries ago. The great wizards of 70 or 80 years ago model their success from learning from the ancient wizards that were great or even the every day ones, so we need to look even further back and sometimes we even need to look at the smaller people. Everett cleared his throat. Did everyone understand? He wouldn't ask. It was common sense. "On top of that, you lot have said a lot of big events and big names. Things don't have to be big to make an impact or be important in history." "So today we will look at something pretty ordinary. But really they date back centuries ago and are important to Wizard History and Culture. And that is Wizard expressions or sayings." He looked around the class. Were people lost? "In your own words give me the definition or...point, of an expression or saying. Don't give any examples. I don't need any at the moment" EDIT: No examples please!!! should have said this before Jez raised her hand. "An expression is used to express an idea using a simile. A saying is a phrase that usually contains hidden advice or knowledge." Very well hidden, in some cases.
Jez thought about some of the expressions her parents and siblings used. And her, for that matter. Some of them were way too colourful for class, of course, but others were just plain weird ... "Merlin's most baggy Y-fronts?" she tried.
There must be better ones out there, surely.

Sky didn't really know any typical wizarding expressions, so she just made one up. "Bloody bouncing pixies!" There that worked, right? If not, then was her parents' fault for having her grow up where the wizarding world was better intergrated with the muggles.

Adam gave a little nod when the professor commented on his answer. Yes some expressions and sayings were definitely not intended for children...especially the ones people said when they were angry or frustrated. When the professor asked for some wizard expressions Adam was kind of stuck...after all he had grown up in a completely muggle home and neighborhood so wizarding expressions were not really something that he was exposed to all that frequently. "Gulping gargoyles is sometimes said when someone is shocked or surprised," Adam offered, having remembered one of his professors at one of his old schools saying it once or twice.

Honestly, she was just writing down everything she heard, a lot of things contradicted one another so when she would go back to read her notes she was sure she would have issues. Then again that was just how notes worked in general.
Then HISTORY WAS MADE! Kurumi Hollingberry had lost house points. She did not know whether to get up and applaud her best friend/ lion sister or to tape her jaw back together because it was now hanging loose from the hinges. Eventually she decided that she should at least close her mouth.
She tried to find a distraction from the history in the making and turned her attention back to her professor, "I guess a famous wizard phrase would be my Mom's favorite. Whenever we don't have enough room she goes on a rant about how there wasn't enough room to swing a kneazle."

Sierra sat straight up, eyes wide with surprise, and then turned her head sharply toward Kurumi Hollingberry. Dictionary Eater had lost points! She'd lost points--Kurumi Hollingberry! Alert the Daily Prophet--the girl was normal after all! A wide smile spread across Sierra's face. It'd only been a mere two points, but even still, Sierra's entire day had just been made. She flashed the professor a very small smile before focusing once again on the lesson.
Hmm... A wizarding expression or saying. She narrowed her eyes in thought as she listened to the responses around her. A wizarding expression or saying... A wizarding expression or saying... Puffer Children.
Heh. She wondered if she'd get a points loss for that one. The professor was a Slytherin, yes; but in her two years at Hogwarts, Sierra had learned that there were very soft-hearted, wimpy Snakes out there. Who knew what Hottie Scabior would do. ... WAIT. Hottie Scabior?! Where did THAT come from?! She blushed and sank down in her seat. She was going to have to head back to the common room and hide for a while. Days. Weeks. Months. This was terrible. She didn't want to turn into one of those girls.
Yes, Tori Bunbury, we're talking about you...
Oh, right. There had been a question asked. Err... Oh, yeah. Sayings. Expressions. "It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live," she said, her hand raised.

| Baguette | there is no D in my name | TRAITORclaw | Queenie of Narnia Vashti had to think for a few moments before she could answer the question. She hadn't heard many wizarding expressions except for the use of "Merlin's beard!" and the like; she used those herself. Plenty of Muggle expressions were coming to mind, but those weren't the sort that were needed unfortunately. Finally, though, she did remember that Marcus had mentioned something of the sort to her one time, so she raised her hand. "Would 'Wand of elder never prosper' be one?" she said.
As she lowered her hand, she suddenly heard a certain word being said, and her head whipped around to find that Louisa was the one who had said it. Of all the things she could have answered with... The girl hadn't actually been calling someone that, of course, so it wasn't that bad, but still, Vashti didn't like it. She eyed her friend for a few seconds before turning her attention back to the professor.

Jesifur giggled when she thought of the expression her mother had used once. She raised her hand and tried not to laugh.
When called upon she answered, "You can lead a man to a unicorn, but the unicorn still might not like him." She wasn't sure what it meant exactly. But thought it had to do with the nature of her family who was both wizarding and muggle.

Kimalia felt for Evelyn, it wasn't really her fault some students were out of control, so when she saw Evelyn staring at her, Kimalia merely returned with a smile that she hoped came as understanding.
Now to the next question... a Wizard expression. Hmm.. Kimalia looked up at the ceiling thoughtfully, she didn't want to use a common one, so she raised her hand after enough mental debating, "So easy a troll can do it."

Nika shrugged and smiled a bit even though she hadn't been completely correct. She never was correct though. Unless it was muggle studies. She was normally always right in that class, just because well she has a whole family of muggles! She practically was one until her acceptance letter. So normally Nika's answers were always wrong. Mostly because she guessed and didn't read. But this time it wasn't completely wrong AND Professor Scabior we like you for that. Yes. At first when you almost rolled your eyes at Nika for her generic answer we were thinking about not liking you and when you said you like to take points away we were thinking about not liking you there too. But then you took points away from slytherin so we liked you again.
And now, Professor. We like you even more--
Wait. Jaw drop. Professor that we like say wha now?
Did you just take points away from Kurumi? Hold on this can't be possible. Kurumi is like the merlin of all students. She's always right. Well there's that one time when she was wrong-- wait nope. It never happened. She's a prefect. She's in her fourth year. Don't you have to be a fifth year to be a prefect? Point proven, case closed. You can't just take points away from a Kurumi Hollingberry. It just doesn't happen. Points and Kurumi can't even go into the same sentence unless there is a gained, got, received, awarded or something of the sort in between them. There must be something in the rules about this! Taking points away from cookie girl, it just DOESNT happen!
Nika stared forward and blinked a couple times. Did that just happen? There is just no possible way. No way. This is Kurumi Hollingberry, the Kurumi Hollingberry. So Nika looked at her professor who just took points away from Kurumi, meaning he took points away from Gryffindor. But Professor they are already losing!? HMPH. We don't like you anymore. But we don't hate you. Nika is switzerland. For now she'll just stare at him with her "poker face" and then we'll see what her decision is in the end. To like professor or to not like professor.
Right now what was this question again? Nika wanted to keep her hand down in protest, but maybe she'll have a chance of being almost right again and she can't pass that opportunity up! Now to think of an expression, a wizard expression? Stupid being muggleborn. Think Nika, think about what all of your friends say all of the time. Oooh! She raised her hand and waved it around as if to say 'pick me pick me!' "The fire's lit, but the cauldron's empty!" Hehe. Wizard sayings. They are so silly yet so much like muggle sayings at the same time.

So many sayings she had learned from her father... It goes without saying that you should never have more children than you have floo powder.
History is the sum total of the things that could have been avoided.
Eris raised her hand, "An infallible method of conciliating a dragon is to allow onself to be devoured." she nodded with a grin. It was basically along the moral lines of the only completely true way to fail is to not try.

Goblin rebellions...boring? Yeah like this class.
Oh and there goes another point, thanks to whomever had the fault. Back to the class, the professor asked what a saying or expression was, Nikolas was going to give an example but he has already said NO examples and that would only cause Slytherin to lose more points, right? So no examples for now.
He raised his hand. "A saying is an expression of wisdom used as an advice" or something like that.

Justin looked around as confused as ever as he listened to the other students. He was definately going to need a tutor if he was going to past this class.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Nero Perseus Ballarat First Year | ☆ Always Potterhead ☆ SSRPG Addict ☆ Coffee Addict ☆ An expression, huh? Suddenly, the thought of her father once violently defeated a wizard haunts her. It was definitely wrong for him to do that. That poor man was only doing his job! Quickly and energetically raising her hand like Hermione Granger did in her first Potions lesson, Aiden has already prepared with her answer. "Soon we must all face the choice between what is right and what is easy." |

An example of wizarding expressions....
Rasing her hand, Elise replied. "You may lead a hippogriff to water, but you can't make it drink." |

So, you can loose points for answering questions? not good, not good at all. Something had really gotten to the adults at Hogwarts. But Em had a good expression, so she was going to say it. Raising her hand she answered, "'A well cared for wand, cares for you.' It urges us to take good care of our wands because a wand that is broken is no good at casting spells."

Alyssa wished that she had been fast enough to raise her hand and answer what the definition of a saying was, which was "a word or phrase that particular people use in particular situations" but she had run out of time.
So she quickly thought of all the wizard expressions she had heard over the years and when she came up with one, she raised her hand, stood up and answered,"What about the expression It's no good crying over spilt potion".

Because most of the students understood. "But to be brief, expressions are phrases that are used to express a thought or a feel ing that a person is having...." He waved his hand lazily as he trailed off. He wasn't about to explain any further. Students had answered the question already so clearly they understood. "Now, what are some examples of wizard expressions. The more creative your example is, the more I'll like you." Yeah. He was being serious. EDIT: After this we'll take a small break, BUT WILL CONTINUE LATER TONIGHT! Quote:
