Default The Greenhouses: Herbology Lesson Two

Herbology Lesson Two

The second Herbology lesson of the term was taking place in the relatively warm greenhouses—enchanted to shield the collection of striking plants from the frosty winter conditions. They were going to be working in Greenhouse Three today, and Seren had quite a bit in store for them. Seren stood just inside the entrance to the greenhouse, dressed in robes of teal, she eagerly awaited her students to arrive. Hopefully they would come prepared to get down and dirty.

As you enter Greenhouse Three you find that a long Oak table occupies a length of the central corridor, with stools positioned around the sides. To the immediate left the flower bed is completely empty. At the front of the Greenhouse, is the all too familiar black board and on it, it says....

flipnsnipwitit.... flip-n-snip-wit-it, as for the wand movement all you’re required to do is swish your wand wherever you wish to trim your plant.” Seren demonstrated by swishing her wand back and forth briskly.

“So remember, first practice the incantation... then the wand movement, separately.”

“Then take one and practice trimming back the leaves.”

Nika let out a small sigh. She wasn't the biggest fan of herbology, but she did like the class. That was really only because they didn't have to use spells and they didn't have to be great at magic to do well, but that's changed. She took out her wand as she listened to her professor explain and then watched her demonstration. Nika let out another small sigh as she brought her wand forward. She almost did the spell before realizing that she'd need to practice the incantation and the movement before she did it. That always seemed to help make things easier.

She repeated the incantation a couple times out loud, "Flip-n-snip-wit-it, Flip-n-snip-wit-it, Flip-n-snip-wit-it, Flip-n-snip-wit-it!" Then when she had gotten the hang of saying that out loud she brought up her wand again and then did the swishing movement. Back, then forth, back, then forth. Now to put the two together.

Bringing her wand in front of her body she took a deep breath before muttering, "Flip-n-snip-wit-it!" She did the movement and then looked and nothing happened. Of course. This is a routine for Nika by now. It always takes seven tries at least, to get the spell right. She put the thoughts behind her and tried again, "Flip-n-snip-wit-it" Still nothing. Maybe she could ask someone around her for some help.

Isabelle looked at her plant and started to concentrate.
"Flipnsnipwitit....flip.n.snip.wit.it....flipnsnip wit it." She said quiwtly practicing the incantation. She then decided to make her plant look pretty maybe a bit of a heart shape. She practiced swishing her wand around in a heart.
"Flipnsnipwithit." Isa said trying. That was wrong. She tried again. "Flipnsnipwitsit." Wrong again. She started taliking to herself. "It is flip n snip wit it. Come on you can do it. Flipnsnipwitit." She said swishing her wand around.
IT WORKED? Not a heart but all right.

Presley sighed, and grabbed a plant. She pointed her wand at a branch that looked longer than the others. "Flipnsnipwitit," she ordered, slashing at the branch. Then she burst out laughing. It sounded like she was some form of and idiot trying to tell the plant to get on with cutting itself up. She shook her head to clear it, and tried again. "Flipnsnipwitit!" She made a motion across a branch with her wand. Still nothing. Presley knew she was hopeless at plants, but really? This was a spell! She should've done fine! "Flip-n-snip-wit-it!" Presley enunciated each syllable. Nothing. She raised her hand high in the air. "Professor? Can you come help me? I think I must be doing something wrong, because this isn't working."

Kurumi frowned a bit. Yep, she had been one of those little girls who thought she could save a plant that had been under watered by practically drowning it in water. She had even put one of her mother's potted plants in the river near her home once. That hadn't turned out very well.

Before we get started on the actual bush however I would like you each to practice the incantation and the wand movement... separately at first and then together.”

With another swish of her wand Seren produced a number of severed tree branches on the table.

“The incantation is flipnsnipwitit.... flip-n-snip-wit-it, as for the wand movement all you’re required to do is swish your wand wherever you wish to trim your plant.” Seren demonstrated by swishing her wand back and forth briskly.

“So remember, first practice the incantation... then the wand movement, separately.”

“Then take one and practice trimming back the leaves.”

Trim a Flutterby Bush?! Kurumi's eyes widened. Those bushes moved around like a child being tickled by an older sibling who simply refused to stop until the younger sibling was exhausted.

Setting her wand in its turquoise holster down on the table, Kurumi used her finger instead as she practiced the incantation. "FLIP-n-SNIP-wit it...flip-N-snip-WIT-it..." Somehow, it sounded a bit off. Professor Bentley hadn't really emphasized any particular part of the spell, had she? Kurumi played back the sound in her memory. No, she had sounded more fluid and calm when she had said it. "Flip-n-snip-wit-it," Kurumi repeated again as she enunciated each word. Repeating it five more times slowly, Kurumi then set to making it sound more fluid and less like she was gasping for air. "Flipnsnipwitit...flipnsnipwitit...flipnsnipwitit," she repeated as she waved her index finger around a bit.

Now picking up her wand, Kurumi more hummed the incantation as she copied the wand movement she had observed earlier. "Swish back...and forth..." she hummed as her wand did the same.

Her violet eyes now went to the tree branch resting on her desk and Kurumi swallowed. Alright, this branch wasn't going anywhere unless someone opened a window and allowed a really strong gust of wind in. This spell couldn't cause anyone to lose a finger, could it? It was different from a Severing Charm, yes? "P-Professor Bentley," Kurumi asked as she waved her wand around a bit more for extra practice. "Are the principles revolving around this spell similar to a Severing Charm? I guess, I am just curious as to why this spell for cutting leaves and not the other." Was this one plant friendly?

Branch now sitting right in front of her. Kurumi swished her wand back and forth. "Flipnsnipwitit," she chirped and heard a soft WOOSP noise as the spell hit a leaf, but only made a small impression it it similar to when one stabs a leaf with their fingernail. Right, focus. What was it that she was always being told? Magic is half intention half concentration?

Trying again brought her repeated results. Maybe she was afraid of hurting the tree branch? Well, that was silly considering the branch was already detached from the tree.

Nodding her head to no one in particular, Kurumi repeated the wand movement, focused her gaze on one leaf in particular, and repeated, "Flipnsnipwitit!"

This time, the spell made a clean cut and the leaf softly blew a few inches away from the branch.

Nika let out a sigh as she stared at the plant. Why must spells be so hard!? Nika brought up her wand again as she took a deep breath. After four tries she was going to get it right this time. "Flip-n-snip-wit-it" Still nothing. Magic is so complicated! Well at least for Nika it is. She eyed the plant as if to say "This time your going down." She wasn't going to let it get the best of her. Mr. Plant be prepared to be trimmed.

She smirked to herself as she brought up her wand again. Nika quickly blew a strand of hair away from her eyes as she muttered the incantation again, "Flip-n-snip-wit-it" Yes, yes... No, no... Nothing. This was probably the sixth time.

Well you know what they say, seventh times the charm...?

Right okay focus Nika, focus. This time you got it. The plant is gonna get it. "Flip-n-snip-wit-it" Annnnd TADA! Finally the spell seemed to have an effect on the plant. Thank merlin that was out of the way.

Flippy-snippy-wippy-WHAT?!

Before practicing this flippy-snippy-wippy spell, Helena wrote it down on her parchment, just to be sure that she won't mess it up or forget it or something.

Alright. She decided to start with the wand movement, since that was the simple part. The girl took her wand out of the pocket of her robes and pointed it towards her parchment, juuuust in case the spell worked. She didn't want to cut anyone's head off. Nope, she surely didn't want that.

Swish, swish, swish.

Yup, that was simple. Now the incantation.

Helena placed her wand on the desk, then began to mumble. "Flipisnipi..." No... "Flipnslipwiiiii..." No... "Flip-n-snip-wit-it." Yes! "Flipnsnipwitit." HA!

OOC: Feel free to play around with this, your charrie might not get it right the first time, or the second time, but practice makes perfect. The next portion of the lesson which is the actual practical task will be posted when I finish work, in approximately 8-9 hours. Remember that while I am not here, Professor Bentley is, so behave accordingly. No injuries please- if you do get hurt you will not be able to participate in the rest of the lesson... and that would be a shame. Otherwise... Happy RPing everyone!

SNORT.

It couldn't be helped. Ellie only did so much as cover her mouth to stifle the giggle fit that immediately followed the Professor's demonstration. That had to be the oddest spell Ellie's learned yet.

Minutes later, she'd calmed down enough to take out her wand. Right. So... "F-" Hehehehe. "Fl-" HAHA. "Flibbidy"

Okay, no. This wasn't happening. Maybe in a couple years....maybe.

"Flibbidis-" Hahahaha.

Ellie put her forehead on the table and giggled into her lap. She was officially unfocused.

Zing

"Flip-n-snip-twi... No no that's not right." Aurora repeated the incantation over and over until she managed to get all the syllables in the right order. She swished her wand as she said it until she felt the familiar zing in her wand hand that suggested a successful spell. Then she retrieved a small flutterby bush and began to try it out. "Flipnsnipwitit." she muttered as she brought her wand across one of the overgrowing branches. Nothing happened. She tried again and still nothing happened. On her fourth try she noticed a small cut in the branches. She took a deep breath. Concentrated very hard and tried again. This time the offending branch came right off. She smiled and inspected the incision; a perfect cut! No ragged edges or anything. She grinned, "Cool." she said. It was a pretty cool spell and deserved the recognition.

And so the students were getting started. Not wanting to miss out on any of the fun, Seren wandered around the table observing the students practice the charm.

Watching and scribbling on her parchment what the professor was saying, Louisa's mind was struggling to feel the joy in the lesson. In fact, Herbology wasn't her strong subject.. it was her guardian's aspiration but not Louisa's. At least the Professor was nice enough to handle the thing.

"flipnsnip--" She started but lost focus. Groaning, she cleared her throat and repeated, "flipnsnipwitit." Hmm.."That sounds ridiculous." She said quietly. She then grabbed a branch and started practicing the swishing movement near it. No incantation yet. That seemed easy enough.

"flipnsnipwitit. flipnsnipwitit. flipnsnipwitit. sn--" She giggled. She so has to play this game with her brothers one day! Saying this five times quickly! Another giggle. Fingers crossed it wasn't against the rules to giggle to oneself in the class -_-

The thirteen year old sat upright and cleared her throat. "flipnsnipwitit." She muttered swishing the wand against a branch, only to cause it roll over unaffected. She scowled at it. "Hmm. Not easy enough I see." She caught its end with her free hand and tried again, "flipnsnipwitit." The branch twitched. She threw it away, "It's broken." She said lamely and looked for another one.

There! A thinner one. "Flipnsnipwitit." She said determinedly and this time it worked. She swished and the trimming ,despite its awfulness, was a success.
"Very good, very good... you're gettign the hang of it now," smiled Seren as she made her way around the table.

"Flipntssnipwitit" Simon was not sure if it sounded right, so he said it again. "Flipnsnipwitit." That sounded better. "Professor can I try it together now?" Simon had no idea if it was a good idea or not but he'd have to do it sometime.
Seren gave Simon an apprehensive look... then a small smile.
"I suppose you should... just be careful," she reiterated. She didn't want him throwing his wand around again.

While he recorded it he realized that now he could trim his own hair, maybe even shave it and look like Shaw. He would try later. For now, he had to practice the incantation. "Snipnflipitwit, Witittoflipnslip, Flipslipwitin, Itflipnsnipwit, Flipwitsnipeniteiqe... " He repeated getting tongue tied and saying the incantation incorrectly over and over. It was one of those spells where all the syllables sounded so similar he couldn't remember their order. Finally, he consulted his notes and repeated each syllable separately, to avoid getting them mixed up. "Flip-N-Snip-Wit-It, Flip-N-Snip-Wit-It, Flip-N-Snip-Wit-It... Flipnsnipwitit." He took his time, but after several attempts he finally managed to master the incantation. That is, so long as he spoke slowly. "Flipnsnipwitit, Flipnsnipwitit, Flipnsnipwitit."

Next was the wand movement. He picked up his wand, and without saying anything he swished it around. It started to look like he had broken his wrist and his hand was flailing around. It was simple enough, though, so he wasn't too worried about getting that wrong. All he had to do was manage to keep his wand pointed at the tree and not at someone's head, or their eyebrows, or that Ravenclaw girl's mustache.
"Good, good," nodded Seren in approval. "Have a go on the branch now."

"Flipnsnipwitit!"
"Very good, have a go on the branch now," encouraged Seren with a smile.

Back to class.

The trimming charm. It seems simple, Stella took out her wand and began practicing the wand movement. After doing two swishes with her wand she stopped swishing her wand and began trying pronounce the charm. "Wlipsnipitit," she mumbled to herself, "Stupid charms, so hard to pronounce!!!" For a spell it was rather hard to pronounce, probably because the word has too many syllables. "Flipmsnipit," she mumbled to herself again, disappointed of herself because she can't pronounce the chaem, irritated she again mumbled rather loud, "Flipnsnipwitit!" She turned silent, it took her a while to notice that she got the pronunciation correct. She tied-up her hair and began pronouncing the trimming charm ,in her head, with the wand swish. It took her time to get used to pronunciation of the spell but she got used to it later.

Now to assignment. She took a pot of the Flutterby Bush and just stared at the plant for a while. It seemed rather harmless, she took her wand out and pointed her wand at a small leave, and with a swish of her wand she said the trimming charm AND... The leave moved a bit to the right. Stella smiled and mumbled to herself, "Well there goes beginners luck." Again pointing her wand at the leave, "Flipnsnipwitit," she said with a swish of the wand AND... Nothing happened. "Stupid wand... Start working," she said annoyed banging her want at the pot almost breaking it.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breathe she pointed her wand at the leave, again and said, swishing her wand, " Flipnsnipwitit," AND as usual the leave moved a bit. "You're not making this easy on me are you," she said staring at her wand wanting break it, how did this wand chose her? They don't go along at all. "Okay," she sighed annoyed, "Last time, Stella," she whispered to herself, "If someone can do it, so can you, and you're a Ravenclaw the smart ones, so give pride to your house," she thought to herself re-tying her hair. "Flip-n-snip-wit-it!!!" she said irritated giving her wand a swish AND... The leave fell of the branch. "Hallelujah!!!" she said looking up towards the ceiling raising her hands up, she was so proud of herself. "Probably I need to be angry so the that spells will work," she thought to herself feeling finally relaxed.

She pointed her wand to another leave and saying she trimming charm giving her wand a swish and it easily fell of the bush. And she did like that to some other leaves with until the professor will ask them to stop.
GAH MERLINS BEARD!!!
"NO NO NO no no no!!!" said Seren suddenly... how on earth did this child get her hands on the Flutterby Bush? she hadn't brought them out yet.
"Were you not listening to instructions?... we are only practicing on these loose branches," she said in a level voice indicating to the various loose branches in the middle of the table. "Not on the actual plant yet."

Gah!... Lucky for her she didn't harm the plant in any way... though it could have been disastrous!

"3 points... for not following instructions properly."

Alright, he was pretty sure he had that down. And the wand movement was just swishing your wand? Well, that didn't seem hard at all. He swished his wand about a few times. "Good as gold," he said.

Alright, it was time to practice on a tree branch. He took the one that had materialized in front of him and stared at it for a moment. "Alright, you're going down," he said to it. He concentrated, swished his wand toward the end of the branch, and said, "Flipnsnipwitit!" A slice appeared in the branch, but it hadn't gone all the way through. A few leaves had fallen off, though, but he wasn't sure if that was from the spell, or if it had been more from the impact of the spell hitting a different part of the branch. Huh. How'd that happen?

"Alright, Lucas, try it again." (He was beginning to discover that he had a bad habit of talking to himself in class.) He swished his wand toward a different area and repeated the incantation. This time, the slice was a bit deeper, but still not all the way through. "Darn it! One more time." He aimed for another area, swished, and incanted (if that was even a word). HA! Clean break. He'd managed to trim back some of the leaves quite nicely, if he did say so himself. Yeaahhhh!!! "Alright! Awesome." He grinned to himself.

Hmm. These little twigs seemed a bit frivolous. May as well slice those off, right? He aimed toward them, swished, and said, "Flipnsnipwitit!" Off came the twigs. This was kinda fun. Maybe he should find a plant to prune later tonight... Would this work on other things? Could he prune, say, a bedpost? Not that he was going to try that. He didn't actually want to get in trouble.
"Nice wandwork," smiled Seren, as she passed by.

Samira picked up her wand and did a few swishy movements. Easy.

She then turned to her plant. "Prepare to be trimmed Mr. Plant..." Raising her wand to the plant, she said, "Flipnsnipwitit!" A small cut appeared on one of the branches, but nothing major. Scowling, she tried again. "Flipnsnipwitit!" Another small cut, but not the desired effect. Samira was not positively glaring at the blasted plant.

The next few seconds was filled with Samira determinedly muttering, "Flipnsnipwitit! Flipinsnipwitit!!" Finally, mostly all the leaves-save for one particularly stubborn one-was trimmed back. Smiling in satisfaction, Samira once again reassured herself that she would never be bested by a plant.
"Good work."

"Flipn...." Ugh. This sounded so made up. Sierra frowned. "Flipn---arrgh!" ... "Flipnsnipwitit!" There. That was it, hmm? "Flipnsnipwitit!" The wand movement was easy enough. She swished it around a little before adding the incantation to it. "Flipnsnipwitit!"
"Nice work Miss Griengoth," smiled Seren noticing the Slytherin was getting the hang of it.

Noticing Miss Adler was having some difficulty Seren stopped behind her.
"Just take a deep breath dear and relax a little. Then with a soft easy movement," Seren demonstrated with a light flourish of her wand, " Flip-n-snip-wit-it ..."
"Give it another go."

"Nice... very good," nodded Seren glancing over the girls charm work.

"They're similar in that they can both be used, though it really comes down to efficiency. Diffindo is best for single, straight cuts, especially on thick branches and such. But Flipnsnipwitit is best for trimming because, for starters its quicker, and the cuts aren't as deep so its harder to make mistakes."

She smirked to herself as she brought up her wand again. Nika quickly blew a strand of hair away from her eyes as she muttered the incantation again, "Flip-n-snip-wit-it" Yes, yes... No, no... Nothing. This was probably the sixth time.

"Very good, now have a go at practicing dear," encouraged Seren.

Okay, no. This wasn't happening. Maybe in a couple years....maybe.

"Flibbidis-" Hahahaha.

Ellie put her forehead on the table and giggled into her lap. She was officially unfocused.
"Got the case of the giggles dear?" asked Seren as she approached the Ravenclaw Seeker. She smiled, "I remember I had the same difficulty when I first learned it. Take a deep breath and have another go."

"Very good dear," smiled Seren.

Well they appeared to have gotten the hang of it- on the most part.
"Ok everyone, now today we will be caring for a Flutterby Bush... this will include trimming it, replanting it, feeding it, and watering it." She paused to let this all sink in.

Flicking her wand, the instructions appeared on the board. She flicked her wand once more and a small cart of Flutterby Bushes wheeled itself into the greenhouse stopping in front of the long table at the front.

"Now you need to be careful ... the Flutterby Bush will move around a fair bit, so take care when trimming it." She didn't want them looking ugly after all.
"So what your going to do once you have trimmed your Flutterby Bush.. is your going to transplant it into the ground over here," she said gesturing to the empty flowerbed on the left hand side of the greenhouse. "You will need to fertilize the soil as well as the bush, so please follow the instructions carefully. Once you have planted your bush you will need to water it, this is very important and it should always be the first thing you do after planting something."

"Once you are done, take a coloured ribbon and a tag," Seren swished her wand and numerous coloured ribbons and tags appeared on the table, "... write your name and house on it and attatch it to your bush."

"All the materials you need, will be up here at the front of the greenhouse. Don't forget your dragon hide gloves... and are there any questions?"

The incantation sounds like a tongue twister. "Flippnsnipwitit... Err... Flipnsniptwitit... No, no! Flipnsnipwitit? Flip-n-snip-wit-it" Aiden mutters the incatation several times to ensure that she will not get lost with the tongue twister-like incantation. Then, she practices swishing her wand a few times. After she is convinced with both her incantation and wand movement, Aiden puts on her dragon hide gloves and gets ready to get messy.

Carefully, she observes every details of the Flutterby Bush before trimming it. She holds the plant gently to stop it from moving around too much. That should make her job easier. She swishes her wand at a dead twig.
"Flipnsnipwitit," murmured Aiden. Next, she holds a few of the Flutterby Bush leaves on the sides and swishes her wand towards them. "Flipnsnipwitit," she murmurs the incantation again. Aiden sees another dead twig and trims it by repeating the incantation and swishing her wand at the dead twig. "Flipnsnipwitit."

Alright. Helena had a lot of things to do, according to the blackboard, so she might as well start.

Once she had her Flutterby Bush, she took her wand and pointed it towarts the plant. Uhh... here we go.

"Flippidiiii... uhh..."

Deep breath.

Okay, try again. "Flipnsnipwitit." She said it slowly, but it seemed to work, as she made those swishes with her wand.

See? It already looked much better.

After she finished trimming the Flutterby Bush, Aiden draw near the flowerbed and bend her knees next to it. There, she begins digging a hole.

Sighs.

She could feel the sweat on her forehead. Aiden stops digging for a while and wipes her forehead with her sleeve. Then, she continues digging the hole. The hole is slightly larger than the pot.

Time for the second step.

Helena looked over at the blackboard, and... how was she supposed to dig? Uhh... just to be sure that she'll do it alright, she did that with her hands. And gloves, of course. She'll never risk having dirt all over her hands, or even worse, under her nails. Nope.

Once she finished digging, she took the pot and held it above, just to see if the whole was big enough. It was, but she made it just a little bit bigger, since the instructions told her to leave a bit extra room.

Now, she should loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole. Aiden does it as instructed. She stands up and stretches body before she picks up some dragon dung and a watering can.

"Ugh!" expressed Aiden disgustingly as she sprinkles the dragon dung into the hole. After that, she takes the watering can and gives a light shower to moist the soil.

"A-ACHOO!!"

The sneeze has caused the water to pour in more. Aiden feels daunted, worries if the soil would be ruined. She takes a peek into the hole. Luckily, the soil did not turn out muddy nor gooey.

Step number three.

Hmmm loosen the soil in the bottom? Alright. Helena did that. But then... DRAGON DUNG?! EWWW! Double... triple... EWWW! And she had a feeling that she couldn't just levitate the dung and drop it in the hole.

Okay, she had the gloves on, so the dung will not have the chance to touch her skin. Just as the instructions said, Helena added a sprinkle of the disgusting thing, then quickly took her gloves off, so she could touch her wand and clean them. She mumbled "Scourgify" as she pointed her wand at the gloves, then put them on again. See? Dung-job done and cleany clean gloves. Hehe.

Next... a light shower of water, and it shouldn't look like mud. Alright, Helena got that. "Aguamenti," she said, then moistened the soil juuuust a little bit. No mud.

Ok, so I need to start by trimming back the leaves and dead twigs of my Flutterby Bush using the Trimming Charm. And that is what ,exactly?, Gwendolyn thought. Looking around to see what the others where doing, the girl decided to use that spell-Flipnsnipwitit?

'Flipnpwitt?', she called out. I'd rather doubt it...
Ok, again: 'Flipnsnipwitit'.I hope that's correct, otherwise I might go mad trying to figure out what the correct form is.

Next step.

This one seemed to be a slightly easier one.

Helena grabbed the Flutterby Bush and carefuly removed it from the pot, after she loosened the soil around the edges. And now... she had to shake the soil off?

Shake, shake, shake.

"There, you can breathe now," Helena whispered to her bush. Well, they needed attention and love as well, right?

Dig a whole in the flowerbed large enough for the pot to fit into the soil-- and leave a little extra room.

Gwen started digging a whole in the flowerbed. And that needs to be how large?, the girl asked herself. Checking out the instructions, she realized she had to make it large enough for the pot to fit into the soil. Plus that extra room- so it will be kinda large...

After having this step done, Gwen looked at the instructions to see what she would have to do next.

Still holding the Flutterby Bush, Helena looked again at the blackboard, to see what she had to do for the next step. The fifth, was it?

Alright. All she had to do was place the bush into the hole. Simple.

The girl placed it there carefully, then slowly filled the hole with the soil she dug out when she made it. Now... she had to pat it? Okaaay. She was still very careful, because she didn't want her bush to suffocate. Or... its roots, or whatever. But no, hers won't suffocate.

Almost done!

Helena looked once again at the blackboard for step number six, which was... uh... she just had to water the plant? But not drown it. Of course she wasn't going to drown it. Alright.

"Aguamenti," the girl said, and watered the Flutterby Bush just a little bit. Then, she touched the soil (without her gloves on), and it was completely dry. Okay, again. Still dry.

The third time she added the small amount of water, she touched the soil again, and this time it seemed okay, AND the bush will not drown. Hehe.

Penny was still practising the charm when Professor Bentley told them they could get on with the practical....
Pointing her wand at the loose branch on the table she had another go
"flipnsnipwitit", and to her amazement... the branch cut itself or rather she made it cut..

Looking up at the board, Penny read & re-read the instructions... not wanting to get anything wrong... Penny made her way up to the long table at the front and selected a Flutterby Bush and went back to her station to begin work..

1. Start by trimming back the leaves and dead twigs of your Flutterby Bush using the Trimming Charm.

Penny cleared her throat, pointed her wand at the dead twigs on the bush and said the incantation "flipnsnipwitit", and the first dead twig fell off, she continued in this vain until all the dead twigs were on the table..

Looking at the bush, she mused that it looked better already..

Next jobs was to trim back the leaves... this was more difficult Penny thought, cos they were smaller and much easier to damage - She was very careful while doing the trimming..

"flipnsnipwitit", she said again and again, five more times she said it... then looking back at the bush, Penny was please... It truly was a lovely plant, how it swayed even though there was no breeze in the greenhouse..

Ooooooooooh, well, that certainly made sense. Kurumi felt a little relieved that her spell casting hadn't been unusually weak because of a lack of focus, but because it was related to the general nature of the spell. "I see, thank you, Professor Bentley," Kurumi chirped as she returned to her notes for a moment to add in that detail.

Kurumi decided to practice the incantation a bit more to make sure that she had the pronunciation down right and the wand movement was as fluid as it could be before getting down to the assignment.

SPOILER!!: instructions!

OOC: To achieve full participation marks for the activity you need to complete the RP in no less than 7 posts (One for each of the instructions). Please LABEL each post with the instruction you are up to, e.g. Post #1

I'm going to allow somewhere between 36-48 hours to complete this activity-- see how we go.

Also please DO NOT double post, triple post, quadruple post... etc. If you do your posts will be merged and you will not recieve full participation marks.

Happy RPing!

...which was starting right now.

Setting her now pruned twig aside, Kurumi first turned to her parchment to write down the instructions so that she didn't have to keep referring to the chalkboard each time and could just take a glance to the right before moving on.

Okay, now that she was finished writing down notes, Kurumi moved towards the cart that held all the Flutterby Bushes and grabbed one that appeared to be the calmest compared to the others. Its leaves and branches were only slightly quivering - as opposed to the one beside it that was quivering up a storm - and returned to her station.

First, she sat down, repeated the incantation a few more times, performed the wand movement while humming the spell, and then flicked her gaze towards the bush.

"YOSH," she whispered to herself as she turned it around looking for any sort of dead or wilted looking leaves and twigs. When she found a few, Kurumi swished her wand back and forth, "Flipnsnipwitit!"

The dead leaf fluttered pun intended to the table top and set the once calm plant into full quivering mode. It was almost hard to see the dead leaves due to the bush shaking so much. Clearly, this wasn't the calmest of the bunch.

SPOILER!!: check list

Care of Flutterby Bush
1. Sart by trimming back the leaves and dead twigs of your Flutterby Bush using the Trimming Charm.
2. Dig a whole in the flowerbed large enough for the pot to fit into the soil-- and leave a little extra room.
3. Loosen the soil in the bottom of your hole and a spinkle of dragon dung followed by a light shower of water-- just enough to moisten the soil, it should NOT look like mud.
4. After loosening the soil around the edges of the pot, remove the Flutterby Bush, roots and all and shake off the excess soil from the roots-- this will allow it to breathe.
5. Place the Flutterby Bush into the hole and fill it in with the soil you dug out. Pat it down gently-- not too firm otherwise you may suffocate the roots.
6. Water the plant -- but don't drown it.
7. Sprinkle a little dragon dung around its base. Tag your plant.

Penny happy with how the bush looked now, moved onto stage two..
Reaching for a small shovel, she first laid the pot over the place that she wanted the hole, traced a circle around the pot and then dug the hole....

Looking at the instructions, she read that she needed to leave a little extra room, so she took another inch of soil out of the hole... setting the pot into the hole, Penny smiled to see the pot fit comfortably with room to spare...
