Default Arithmancy One: Chien Tung

The desks were set up in an oddly ordinary fashion; straight rows, with individual tables and chairs respectively and a larger desk at the front of the room. Josephina was sitting on the larger desk, ankles crossed, as she half turned and was focused on evidently trying to pick up sticks with . . . another stick? Oh yes, the Arithmancy Professor has probably lost it.

Hardly paying attention as you entered the room, you should first notice the cursive handwriting on the chalkboard, which needless to say looked rushed:

Quote:
Please take a seat and have your parchment and quill ready. Class will begin shortly.

OOC: This lesson was meant to open already, but due to working unscheduled this morning, *headdesks*. The lesson will begin in an hour or so. Please keep the chatting to a minimum; that's what the second floor corridor is for. =)
Class has begun. Please pretend as though you were here all along, <3

Introduction/First question
What is Chien Tung?
Answer to above / Quick review of numbers 1-9
Decorating activity (General guidelines)
More on number vibrations / Spell to activate the magic within the number etched onto your sticks =)

More stuff ... & Homework!

Jaina held here green, black, and yellow stick. She poised her wand above the start of the 2 and recited "Fortunus lignum." while tracing it. Nothing happened. She concentrated some more on it and repeated tracing it again while saying "Fortunus lignum." The number began to glow over where Jaina had traced. "YES!" She brought her stick up to the professor to show her hard work---and yes, it had been hard for her! "Professor, here is my Chieng Tung stick if you'd like to review it before I leave." Jaina smiled because she was very proud of it!

Find a partner (or two or three, but you'll get the same credit regardless, it's just up to you if you say wanted to help someone out who didn't have a partner)

Using the Chieng Tung sets found in the Arithmancy classroom and lab, ask each other a question and then shake the sticks and draw one of the numbered sticks. Have your partner interpret the result based upon the meanings and vibrations associated with the number.
Make sure you do the same for your partner and give them the courtesy of a reading, as well!

Due: At the start of the second lesson, which is tentatively scheduled for the end of February. But you'll be notified at least three days before the lesson begins =)

*Don't overthink this assignment though. If you're thinking too hard, you're probably doing something wrong. You could just as easily get full marks for two RP posts versus ten novella posts. Just remember: quality over quantity.

ooc: I'll leave this thread open for another day or two for you to finish up your decorating and whatnot and maximize your class participation =)
Finished with his decorating, Simon repeated the two words over in his head a few times as he studied the stick before finally picking his wand back up. "Fortunus lignum" he said as he traced his stick from tip to tip with the end of his wand. The wood responding properly with the magic the spell gave of so he knew he had done it properly.

Deciding to keep it like many of his other classroom sovenirs, Simon pack up his belongings into his book bag resting the stick on top for safe keeping. The he got up and walked to the front, picking up a copy of the homework assignment and glancing at it briefly. "Thanks for the lesson professor," he replied before filing out of the room.

Numbers tell you about your strengths and weaknesses, what you need to work on and how to work with what you have. They can provide insight as to the lessons to be learned and your potential, even your challenges to reach that potential. It's all there in your date of birth and your birth name, or cosmic name. When your name changes, this can either enhance or detract from your ability to fulfill your mission in life, but it can never change those underlying factors that make you uniquely yourself." For some reason, Hadley couldn't help but glance toward Jake as she said that last bit. "Your birth name and present name are therefore taken into account in your readings."

"Some of you mentioned various characteristics about the numbers, but it is important to also note the significance of master numbers. Should these arise in your readings, then they shouldn't be ignored because those numbers have their own meanings and vibrations. Each number has a variety of meanings associated with it, so while the answers may vary slightly by the uniqueness of the individual, they should fall under the same genre as well. For instance, there are differing degrees of independence for the number one. Or you might be 15 and in the beginning, but also 24 and in the same stage. Does this mean you're starting all over again? No, you're just at the beginning of something new in your life, whether it be a new school year, a new job, a new relationship... something. It will change as you age, but like I said, it will always fall under that particular genre. And as you delve further into your Arithmancy studies, then it is up to you to figure out how they all connect."

As the Arithmancy Professor told them all that about the Number Vibration magic, Riley sat there staring at his stick dumbly. 'It wasn't magical? It sure looks magical, switching back and forth from green to purple, like that. Hmmm..' that seemed pretty right to him. Then what she had set clicked in his mind.

'Ohhh, different type of magic.' he thought to himself, embarassed. He touched his wand to his magical-looking stick and then traced the number 3 while saying the incantation she had explained to them. "Fortunus lignum." Now it was supposed to pich things for him...and it was Magical!!!

Stuck inside with Sirius | *Splish-Splash* | bamBAM | ☁ Spooktacular ☁

As the Professor spoke about meanings, Spike got completely and utterly lost...and instead watched the changing colour of his stick. 'Flashing' was overstating the effect somewhat, but it was going from black to green and that was an achievement. However slowly the green appeared...

He tuned back into the Professor at the word homework. He pulled a face. Didn't the teachers realise there were so many more exciting things to be doing at Hogwarts than homework? He still had hide and seek to play, and a giant squid to tickle!

Meh.

AND he apparently had to do another spell on his stick. Picking up his wand, Spike spied the end which had the number he'd drawn on it. The eight was only visible whilst the colour was green, which meant waiting a fair while for the black to disappear. Dum-de-dummmm... "Fortunus lignum," he said, tracing the curved lines, carefully.

Did it glow? Or was that just the shade of green getting lighter as the black faded away? Hmmmm...

Well, that was good news. As long as Professor Hadley was sure that nothing would explode, Kurumi felt confident enough to just perform the benign spell on her stick. Looking around, other students had begun to glow or sparkle as the spell was performed properly. What would hers do? Maybe the ribbons would spin around?

Picking up her wand once more, Kurumi pointed it at her stick and she slowly and carefully traced the number three she had etched into it. "Fortunus lignum," she said in a nervous but stead voice. Nothing out of the ordinary happened, well, her wand did begin to glow a pale pink and the silver chain she had wrapped around it began to sparkle more brightly like the milky way. Taking that as a sign that she had accomplished the task, Kurumi beamed and looking up when the Professor spoke again.

Oh! How fun! Perhaps this gave her the opportunity share some more of her Japanese heritage with others. She had always enjoyed visiting shrines and using Chieng Tung - it only cost 100 yen to do so.

Gathering up her things, Kurumi picked up a Chieng Tung set, making sure Professor Hadley saw her do so, before adding it to the contents of her bag. "Thank you for today's lesson, Professor," Kurumi said as she zipped up her bag. Now it was a matter of finding some one to do the homework with. Waving farewell, Kurumi began to make her way out the door.

Oh yey! She was deffinatly keeping hers!
She put her stuff in her bag (including her newly decorated stick) and picked up the homework on the way out.
"Thanks and Bye professor." she smiled as she left. Arithmancy didn't seem as hard as she had first though. In fact, it could even be classed as fun. They had decorated sticks!

"Miss Stone?" Hadley approached. "You seem ... perplexed. Is there something I could maybe help you understand?"

You know, because she didn't want Ellie to feel lost and all, being the kind professor she was.
"Hmm?" Ellie said looking up to see Hadley. Well. Heh. She shoulda figured it was her, you know? No one else would approach Ellie as 'Miss Stone'. Which...she didn't really like anyone doing. It was just...formal. But, in class, she'd let it slide. Out of class, though, she'd want to be 'Ellie'. For sure.

"I just don't..." Get the point. Yeah. OR get HOW a STICK was supposed to ANSWER a question. Ludicrous.

She looked up at the professor and smiled, "No, I'm good."

Fib. Not a lie. Fib. There was a difference.

Okay. Good. He understood the first part. And then...blinked. Yes, he blinked, when she started on the stages of life or whatever. Arithmancy was complicated, thankfully Arya was writing it all down, no?

Hadley was right, though, this stick looked no more than a mere stick, a stick he could poke Jake with, haha, but they needed it to be magical? Hmmm, were exactly did the numbers thing happen to appear?

He started to think that perhaps he'd made the wrong choice by deciding on Arithmancy in his fourth year, maybe it was too late, but then...ooooh, a spell? Yeah, he liked spells, he was up for that. 'Fortunus lignum'? Yes, he could do that, doesn't seem too complicated, right?

And so, he did, the boy whispered "Fortunus lignum" and traced the wand over the golden part that held the number...and blinked a bit, well, he was doing a lot of blinking in this class, he was certain that was not a good thing. He thought he saw something sparkle...but then shook his head. He was probably tired anyway.

Or...wait a minute...that was supposed to happen. Oh, well, okay.

And...now they dismissed? What ever happened to the numbers, eh, Hadley? Well, he was done with decoration, like, for the rest of the year, he was free to go. "See you around, Professor," he said, with a nod, after grabbing his bag and almost taking Arya's notes with him and taking a copy of the homework along with his decorated stick.

Mmmmhmmm. Yeah, he was out.

"78 or a 100 ... there are differing opinions on the correct number depending on the sources," Josephina clarified.

SPOILER!!: Emily_Potter & Steelsheen

"The spell sounds right, but you'll know if you did it right because the number will glow as a reflection of the colors on your stick for a brief moment before going back to looking ... ordinary." And she probably should have said that before, but she guessed if some of them got the glowing, they'd have figured it out.

"You're saying it right," Josephina nodded.

"Numbers have that curious way about them... the magical properties within the number are present and only sealed in by that Fortunus spell." It wasn't one of those things that could be explained, but just was understood.

SPOILER!!: Gryffindor boys

"Good," she said nodding at the Gryffindor boys. It seemed many of the students were wrapping things up.

Raven copied the homework written in the board, and back his wand into the holster and into the bag, together with the chien tung stick near him, he knows Professor notice everyone grabbing a set or two.
"no problem with the partners, we have common room, I'll just hang in there" Raven think it the best ways

for now time to gather all his mess, and get out quickly "Thanks for the lesson, Professor, good day again" Raven say it before he march up toward the exit

"Oh cool," Sakura said before turning back to her stick. Now to do that spell...

"Fortunus Lignum," Sakura whispered, following the Professors instructions to a tee. She didn't know if the spell had worked yet, it probably had, and if it hadn't well that was too bad. But she was going to assume that it had.

Class was over? Sadness.

Sakura hurriedly put everything back into her bag before getting up and grabbing the homework. "Great lesson professor," Sakura said as she bounced past the woman.

"Huh," Jake responded, not as a question but in a 'well whadya know about that' kind of way. He nodded and stood, packing his stuff away. Once the young man had hold of the assignment, he stopped.

And sighed.

And left.

And they get to use even more magic. Which was rather strange to Evelyn, considering she was kinda looking forward to the 'no magic but logic' subject. No matter. At least this wasn't Transfiguration, and she mostly used Charms spells. Wooot!

"Fortunus lignum." she said, tracing her wand over the number seven she had created at the top of her flashing Slytherin candy cane looking stick. Hmmm, no go? Well then...she'll just have to try it...

AGAIN!

...

Aw there we go. The glow-y looking thing the professor was talking about. Hmm yea, she should've said that before hand, but thank Merlin she did! Otherwise the Slytherin would have left it as is after the first try.

Worth 10 points [extra credit possible for outstanding efforts*].
For credit you should link me to the relevant RP posts and include your username, character name, member ID, and house. Credit will only be given to those who send me the links.

And they could leave?

Huh. It seemed like a short lesson, but then again, it was fun. So it could just SEEM short, but in reality, they could've been here for like six hours!

Perhaps not that long, but it could happen!

Packing up her notebook, and her quill and ink, she slid the stick into a safe little place in her bag before placing her wand back into her wrist holster. Mwa! Done. Standing up, she slung the bag over her should before pushing in her seat and making her way over to grab a copy of the homework assignment and...a set. Bleh. Set of sticks. Pffft.

"Goodbye, Professor Hadley." she smiled, before moving out the door and going...wherever she was going.

Smiling brightly, his Fortune Stick twinkling just as brightly, Patroclus began to pack his things into his bag, before getting up and retrieve a Chien Tung set from the Professor, "Thanks for these," he gestured to the set, "And also for a really great lesson!"

It had started off a little bumpy, but the lesson had to Patroclus been one of his favourite lesson for Arthimancy!

Returning to his desk and packing the sticks, he grabbed his bag and the Prefect headed to the door!

Emily looked down at her stick, she had noticed her number give a faint glow, but she wasn't entirely sure because of the way the light bounced off her shimmering number. Nonetheless, she had faith in her abilities and popped her stick in her bag.

The lessons over already, she thought to herself as she copied down the homework. After a moment she placed her belongings in her bag and went to collect a set of sticks from the classroom before leaving.
"Thanks for the lesson Professor", she said as she left the room.

Alright, so now it is time to add the magic touch then, Chloe thought and with a wave of her wand said, "Fortunus lignum", and with a bit of concentration she got her glowing desired result. She saw the number 9 on her stick glow like stars in the nu=ight sky and then fade back to normal. It was beautiful:

Herminny then heard the professor say class had come to an end and assigned homework. She cringed slightly hearing it was a partner assignment but let that pass. She would worry about finding someone later. She did have a whole week to do it. So Chloe just gathered her things and as she passed the professor on the way out said, "Thanks for a a great lesson", and headed out to the grounds to relax.

Salander nodded silently and stared back down on the slim rod. Did it glow? It may have, but then again he wasnt entirely sure. He repeated the spell as he flicked his wand over the number "Fortunus lignum!" This time he noticed the silvery six glowing brightly then dimmed down slightly into a more subdued hue.

As he swung his messenger bag over his shoulder, he picked up a copy of his homework and gave it a once over Hmm looks like I'm gonna have to find a partner... He nodded his head at the Professor then left the room.

Josephina was about to get back to the ickle firstie in his questions about the flashing paint charm when it seemed like he attempted it and did a good first effort at it as well. "Not bad. You'll get there," Hadley said in a hopefully encouraging manner. "But really, you've got the hang of it." Just a few more times practicing, but by next year, he could probably make anything flash colors!

"For this purpose it doesn't matter what number you've put on your stick, but just know that the vibrations associated with the number eight may be uncharacteristically strong within you." Hadley said in response to her inquiries.

SPOILER!!: Satine & Evelyn

Beaming at the older girls as they seemed to have found their mistake, Josephina nodded. "No problem. That's what I'm here for."

And then ... another question. "You can use a coloring charm to color the stick and add decorations to it, but to add the number, I recommend either carving it or painting the number on. Either one works, because it is the next spell that will add the magic to that number and give it the vibrations needed to make it as one of a set of 78 Chien Tung fortune sticks. While we won't be making a complete set, you're welcome to do so if you desire." To that last part, she addressed the whole class.

Now back to number vibrations, because this information may be important for them to properly complete the homework assignment. "Each of the numbers 1 through 9 have definitive and symbolic meanings that correspond to the evolution of a person’s life.

Numbers tell you about your strengths and weaknesses, what you need to work on and how to work with what you have. They can provide insight as to the lessons to be learned and your potential, even your challenges to reach that potential. It's all there in your date of birth and your birth name, or cosmic name. When your name changes, this can either enhance or detract from your ability to fulfill your mission in life, but it can never change those underlying factors that make you uniquely yourself."
For some reason, Hadley couldn't help but glance toward Jake as she said that last bit.

It may have seemed confusing or daunting now to some of these kids, but Josephina was sure that they'd understand once they started working more with numbers. "Back to those sticks you have all decorated. In a true set, there would be 78 fortune sticks, but as we don't have the time for that, I am just giving you the basics for how to make one. Though I do have several sets available in the lab for those interested, which you will need to borrow if you wish to complete your homework." And certainly they did, because why else would they be taking Arithmancy? Unless they were lazy when it came to assignments... "However, your sticks are missing the magical component that allows them to answer a question when delving into the art of Chieng Tung. In order to activate the magic within the number that you've etched into your sticks, you'll need to trace it with your wand and utter the words 'Fortunus lignum'."
"Fortunus Lignum."

Elle focused and traced the numbers with her wand. She hoped she was doing it the right way.
