Celandine attempted a smile for the Professor and waited patiently. Yup. She knew that look. That was the Imma-talk-to-you-in-a-minute look.

"I enjoyed the lesson." he said before turning to leave. It seemed once again Transfiguration would be his favorite lesson.

Preston accepted the books before resting them on the desk, before picking up Princess again. He'd learned, the hard way, that he could not leave his new kitten anywhere near his old books.

"I'm glad," he said, with a nod. "Have a good day."

Looking about, it seemed the room had mostly cleared, and so he was able to finally turn to Miss Toussaint.

"I suppose I have an idea where you were, but why don't you tell me." His voice was even, betraying no sense of his opinion on the situation.

Preston paused, considering whether he should be on the lookout for such items. It seemed whenever he mentioned something potentially illicit, it turned up.

"Regarding spells that are not typically on items you eat, such as a transfiguration spell, what happens to it doesn't necessarily effect the duration. They are not specifically designed for consumption, but the act of consuming doesn't alter it the spell any."

Joke candy?

Oh, she almost forgot about those. Blame her parents!! Never letting her eat any of them...

But he was right. There WERE spells designed to be eaten. Would her color spell be in the same category? Even though the effects were disastrous to the consumer of course and would not be considered for any candy. But still.

"So the spell...will wear off...eventually?" she asked, not really sure where he was getting at. A simple yes or no would have been good enough for her. Transfiguration...definitely not her best subject.

Perhaps she'd just ask Destiny later on. She seemed pretty decent on the subject.

Celandine was about to blurt out and explain how horrible Lafay was and that she'd had to go WASH because the stink from the dungeons had felt like they had clung to her skin even though it was mostly in her head and she had needed to calm down and all in a bubble bath...

... instead she opnened and closed her mouth a few times and straightened up. "It doesn't matter why I wasn't here sir, its no excuse to miss class."

And that stuff was over for now right?

Preston frowned a bit. "Transfiguration spells vary as to their duration. Some of it is dependent on the intention of the caster. Some on the skill. But a truly permanent, for all time, transfiguration requires a strength that is likely to only be achieved through dark means." He leveled a steady gaze. "Spells fade. When they fade varies."

He paused, and considered her another moment. "These seem like questions that would interest some of your classmates, as well. Why don't you come to the Transfiguration Club? We may get a discussion going, if there's interest."

Achieved through dark means? How would...

No, no more questions. She was getting a headache. Glancing at Celandine for a moment, she looked back to the Professor suddenly when he suggested her come to the Transfiguration club. She thought about it, and even considered it....

But seriously? She already was joining two other clubs. Although, Transfiguration club...the possible help she'd need to get through the class. Meh! "I might...pop in to one of them...or something." she mumbled, picking some invisible lint or something off of her sweater.

"Well, alright then." Professor Kingsley took note of the mumbling but made no comment. "Check the noticeboards if you're interested."

Preston looked back down at the watch she had transfigured, before grabbing it and pocketing it. Best not to change it back before he could decide if it were... creepy or not. "Good work today. Enjoy your day."

Pfft. She'd probably end up going anyways knowing her and her undecided mind. "Alright." she nodded, looking back up and making a small effort to put a little smile on her face.

That is, until she saw the pocket watch again. Now that she thought about it, the thing was pretty creepy. Even for her. "Thanks. You have a nice day as well." she said, still unsure whether she should just burn the pocket watch even though it was in pocket or walk away.

Walking away sounded safer. For both of them. Plus there were enough people in the school that were already burned. "Bye, Professor."

Preston stroked his chin thoughtfully at her simple answers.

"I was informed by a student as to what transpired that resulted in your detention, Miss Toussaint. But from your response to me, I cannot tell if you are exhibiting good judgment and restraint in your answers, or if you would like me to blame you for your absence."

Crossing his arms against his chest, he tilted his head at the young woman, pressing his lips into a straight line, thoughtfully. "In either event, why come at the end?"

But why had she come?

"Because I don't want to miss anything sir."

"No. I suppose you don't," he said simply, before going to return Princess to her box. "And, so you know, I don't assign any." Returning to where she stood, he said no more on the subject. What he thought about what had transpired was irrelevant for the conversation and inappropriate to express to a student.

" I admire that, Miss Toussaint. Have a seat," he gestured to a desk in the front and waited for her to sit.

A lot of people were in front of her and most of them were taller than she was so Dianna had to stand up on her toes.
"Do we get advanced lessons when we join the club professor?" Dianna asked.

He took another bite, before setting the cupcake down on the desk. Princess, in her curiosity, walked up to it and sniffed, getting frosting in her whiskers.

Swallowing, he brushed the crumbs from his hands. "Moist. Nice balance between the chocolate and the cream cheese." He nodded thoughtfully, resting his hand on the desk.

A hand that Princess nudged with her frosting-covered nose. Sighing, Preston extracted a hanky from his pocket, cleaning them both. "An excellent job. I think Princess approves, as well."

Wait for it... wait for it... man, Professor Kingsley sure knew how to make a guy sweat when taste-testing his cupcakes....

"Well thank you, sir," Fletcher beamed and polished off his own cupcake. "I'm considering a career in the culinary arts, y'see." He had certainly had fun at the table at the career fair...

Despite having thought that most of the students had cleared out, Preston spied a small Slytherin.

"Ah, Miss Malfoy. Advanced?" Preston considered for a moment. "I would say additional instruction, rather than advanced. But it will certainly help prepare you for advanced study once you're older."

He smiled at her kindly before turning back to the other students.

"Well, I think that is a well-placed interest. You certainly demonstrate competency at this stage. Thank you for sharing your dessert." Who knew whether that competency would flourish but for the time being, the cupcakes were excellent.

"If that's all, Mister Fletcher, I need to tidy the room and see to Miss Toussaint's questions."

Celandine sat down quietly and waited, her expression thoughtful. While she was waiting she drew her wand and summoned parchment and a quill. She was planning to take notes of course.

AmbiguouslyMe 05-27-2010 04:15 AM

Preston walked about the room, straightening desks, picking up stray pieces of parchment and collecting his locks and items. Something about cleaning a room by hand after a lesson was relaxing for him.

As he did so, he spoke to the Head Girl. "We began the lesson with a bit of discussion on the theory behind transfiguration: theory that I know you are already well versed in based on your explanations to Mister Upstead in my office. While I would have valued your voice in the discussion, I don't believe you missed much, there."

He returned to the front of the room, he stacked boxes, leaving a lock and a stuffed monkey toy out on the desk. "We also briefly discussed the Principal Exceptions to Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration. You are familiar with those, correct?"

He didn't anticipate any reason she wouldn't be, though better to ask than assume. He turned to face her, leaning against the desk.

"And thank you for your kind words and sampling." He smiled and waved a few fingers at Cela on his way out. Successful and fun lesson indeed!

Celandine smiled briefly at Fletcher and waggled her fingers at him. It would have been coquettish if her expression wasn't so thoughtful and clearly focused on the professor's words.

"Of course sir. Food, Money, Love, Magic and Magical Items and True Life." Celandine nodded. Theory. She liked discussing theory. It came naturally after absorbing so many text books.

AmbiguouslyMe 05-27-2010 04:45 AM

"Excellent. I don't feel the need to rehash the theory with you, Miss Toussaint, though if you would like to discuss it later, you'll be happy to know your fellow students expressed significant interest in these sorts of questions during the lesson. I imagine such discussions will make their way to Club meetings as well."

Tapping his hand against the desk, he thought how best to proceed. "You recall reverto from last term, yes?"

"Yes professor. For untransfiguration, or switching things back to how they were. Kind of like the Reversion shield we learned in defense recently." She quickly transfigured her quill into an arrow and then reverted it, her wrist flicking neatly as she cast it non-verbally. She put her wand down next to the quill-that-was-now-a-quill-again. "You can use it to change a thing back to an old form, like a chicken to an egg, or a butterfly to a cocoon too."

Ah. Well then. Preston supposed he shouldn't have been surprised. She was a Ravenclaw 7th year. And Head Girl.

"Well, it seems the first part of the lesson would have also been review. Let me just get you up to speed on how we did. I explained that the spell as learned last year could also be used for untransfiguration and not simply reverting to a previous form. I highlighted the difference in pronunciation, re-ver-TOE, instead of re-VER-toe, and students were asked to take note of the item's properties before a transfiguration and use those to aid their concentration when attempting the spell."

Preston paused, eyes drifting to her quill-turned-arrow-turned-quill. "I transfigured the objects, partially because the number of spells known throughout the class varies, but also as a bit of a challenge since they would have to reverse a spell not cast by them, and stronger than they would have been able to manage. Older students were asked to attempt it non-verbally, as well."

"You've demonstrated you're capable, unless you'd like to try something I've transfigured?"

"Oh I'd like to do that sir, I haven't had much practice on things I haven't conjured myself." Cela scribbled a few notes down. "I find it an easier spell to do non-verbally, maybe because that way its more about the intent than about the difference in the incantation stresses." Musemusemuse.

"There are other untransfiguration spells and reversion spells too though aren't there? Above like, OWL and NEWT level?"

"To answer the questions about when signups will be, I was asking initially to see if there was interest." Looking at the group assembled, he smiled. "I'd say there is. It will be an informal gathering, so no need to sign up."

He paused, stroking his chin a moment. "However, if there is something you would like to do in particular, please owl me your suggestion. Other questions?"

All questions had been answered. So, why was Treyen still here? Good question!

He nodded, but since there was no other inquiry on his part, quickly left the classroom with a grin on his face. Transfiguration, albeit very difficult at times, was awesome!
