Shape: regular
Texture: smooth, soft
Color: pink, blue
Weight: light
Defining markings: none that I can see.

Emma smiled and focused on the mitten. "Reverto!" she said. The mitten turned the brown, black colour of her hair clip. "Reverto!" she said again, and it turned back into the hair clip. "It changed back!" she cried, she covered her mouth quickly realizing that she had spoken aloud.
She then went back to taking notes on what the professor had been saying. Emma's notes:
Horolos - transfigures an object into a time piece.
Wand movement - three tight, clock-wise circles with a flick at the end.
Concentration - picture your new item in detail; note how the lock's properties will need to change.
Emma focused on the lock before her, she imagined a silver necklace, "hor-eh-los, Horolos!" she exclaimed. And it turned on her first try. Wow! She then said "Reverto". This spell didn't work, she narrowed her eyes, increasing her concentration, and "Reverto!" she cried. It turned back into to a lock. She than began thinking of making the lock into a pair of earrings for Trixie.
"Horolos!" she cried, using the correct movements, and the locked turned into a beautiful pair of silver earrings. She liked this class.

Please put the items away, or if they are too large at the moment, at least make sure you have some room on your desk."

*ooc: We are moving on. If you would like your student to be successful, you may do so as part of your next post. However, Professor Kingsley has moved on, so don't be a distraction. :)

Professor Kingsley returned to the blackboard and wrote a single word. Horolos.

"Part of your homework will be to continue practicing untransfiguration, but since I cannot be with you at all times to transfigure your items, I will also be teaching you a transfiguration spell today."

He tapped the board with his hand. "Horolos. Any guesses as to what it might do?" He looked out over the class.

"I'll give you a hint. The incantation is similar to the name muggles give the study of this object."

Lysandra had no idea what Horolos did. She kept her hand down and let some of the older students and people who knew answer.

He scanned the room again, noticing a hand...

"No, Miss Flores, but a good guess based on the similar sounds in those words."

Ah, another hand. "Again, a good guess, but no."

Preston next turned to the boy he'd just told to sit, pleased with his answer.

"Excellent! You made the connection between the incantation and it's effects."

------

Turning to the board, he added another word. Horology.

"Now, don't be concerned if you didn't make the connection. Many muggles aren't familiar with this word, either. Horology is the study of time, and by extension, the pieces that keep time. Watches. Clocks. Sundials."

"So, yes, Horolos, will transfigure an item into a watch or clock. The shape it takes depends on what you picture it to be. Those more advanced students will be able to create more intricate pieces, though I encourage you all to start small."

Reaching behind the desk, Preston pulled up another box. Reaching in, he removed a single muggle combination lock.

"Pass these around. Everyone gets one." He handed the box to a student in the front.

"We're going to all transfigure the same object, so we can again reflect on the changing properties. Take notice of the similarities, in particular. The lock has a face, with numbers. A watch, or a clock, will have a face, with numbers. Let that help you focus."

"Remember, picture the new piece in your mind, what you want it to look like. And then," Preston unholstered his wand and rolled up his sleeve. "The wand movement is a little more complicated. Three tight clock-wise circles, with a flick at the end." He demonstrated.

"So, horolos. Pronounce it hor-eh-los, three tight circles." Preston did so, transfiguring his lock into into a stylish pocketwatch. When you have your lock, you may give it a try. Raise your hand if you have questions or need help. Remember, you might not get it right your first time."

Preston tapped the blackboard with his wand, adding the information.

Lysandra took a lock and passed it on. She listened to Professor Kingsley demontrate on what to do with the lock. Nodding her head, she placed the lock on the desk in front of her. Pointing her wand at it, she pictured a standard silver clock in her head. Turning the end in three tight clockwise circles she said horolos. The lock jiggled a little. The nob flattened and the latch at the top dissapeared, but the shape of the lock didn't change, no hands appeared and the middle was still black instead of white. What did I do wrong? She had pictured the clock and kept her concentration of the picture like she did when working with the reverto spell, as the Professor had told her. Reverto she said, pointing at the lock clock, and it slowly changed back to the lock she picked from the box.

PattyH. 05-24-2010 02:18 AM

Placing sandal under his seat, Patroclus cleared some space for the lock.

Sitting in the centre of his empty desk, the lock appeared as just that, a lock. Patrcoluc began to turn each component of the lock, into a corresponding section of a pocket watch. The dial of the lock would become the clock face, the hinge of the lock, the ring top of watch.
Closing his eyes, he pictured the desk, but in his mind Patroclus replaced the lock with the timepiece. Opening his eyes, he gave the spell a shot.
"Horolus"
The first change was small, the silver of the lock, now turned gold, after the golden pocket watch Patroclus had in his head. Unsure whether to continue as this was only a halfway point, he decided to reverse it completely, so to transfigure it all the way in one go. "Reverto"

The lock had returned, but Patroclus now had the knowledge that he could change the material with which it was made, so transfiguring a dail into a clock face would be simply. With this glowing confidence he once again pictured the lock as the pocket watch, he performed the three clockwise cirlces and as he ended with a flick, he spoke the incantation, "Horolus!"

Before his eyes the locked turned into a golden skeleton Pocket Watch.

Woah. The necklace changed into a watch.
"Reverto" and the watch became the necklace again.

Getting a lock Dianna tried the spell.
One,Two,Three and flick "Horolos!"

The lock became a teddy bear.
"Oh, so soft and cuddley..." she smiled.

Looking everywhere else around the room to give her some clue as to what she could do, she finally thought of something, putting a small smile on her face. Mwaha! Surely the he would find it funny...

Closing her eyes, trying to picture the watch in her mind, the Slytherin made the three tight circles and upwards flick while saying, "Horolos."

It wasn't the color she wanted specifically, but it was still good enough. Gold in her mind was just not as good as silver. Anyways though. She got the watch on the first try this time! HA! At least she was focusing this time too and not distracted with her snake bracelet. "Professor. Does that look familiar?" she said, holding up the watch for him to see.

It looked like him right?

Preston approached and took the watch from her hand. Looking at it and then down at her, he hid his surprise. Should he be... concerned that he had focused so intently on his features.

"Well detailed, Miss Flores," he said, finally before placing the watch on her desk.

Muaha. He managed to get his guess right. Go Jimbo. The Farley wins again. Even more proud of himself now, Jimbo lifted his quill to write down the new notes on the board.

Putting down his quill, he lifted his wand and tried the wand movement on it's own, making sure he had it right. Pointing his wand at the lock, he pictured it turning into an alarm clock. "Horolos!"

Nothing. Typical. Unsurprised, Jimbo tried again. Tight circle clockwise...one, two, three and FLICKY. "Horolos!"

The lock grew a bell. Huh. He wasn't doing so bad then. That's good. He'll have to undo it though, so he could try again. *sigh*
"Reverto!"
The bell disappeared. Trying again, Jimbo did the wand movement. "Horolos!
And TWO bells. Allllright. So, he'd have to try again.
A couple more tries later (he lost count) he had two bells, the clock hands and the teeny legs at the bottom. Good progress.
Circle, circle, circle, FLICK!
"Horolos!"

Aaaaaaandd CLOCK!

Yay!

But wait. He shouldn't get too excited. There was ALWAYS something wrong. He double and triple checked the clock but it seemed to be fine. Hmm. He turned it on and set it for 5 seconds. After those five seconds, nothing happened. URGH. That WOULD happen, wouldn't it?
So now, instead of there being a sound he can't get rid of, there's a sound he can't GET?

Someone was messing with him. This is completely ridiculous.

Growling, Jimbo turned it back to normal and tried again.
"Horolos!
Set for 5 seconds.
Wait.
Nothing.
Reverto-ness.
"Horolos!
Set for five seconds.
Wait.
Nothing.
Growl again.
"Reverto!
Set for 5 seconds.
Wait.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand nothing.

Obviously getting frustrated, Jimbo tried again. "Reverto! Horolos!
He put down his wand in an angry manner and picked up the clock to set it. He stared at it for five seconds and didn't expect anything to happen, so he wasn't prepared to silence it when it went off.

RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN NNNNNNNGGGG!

Again, it was Jimbo who was making the noise. Jimbo the Noisemaker. Thing is, he didn't even mean to. BLAH.
Grabbing his wand from his desk, he silenced the thing and kept glaring at it until he realized that he'd done it. Yay!
Suppressing the urge to get up and dance like he did last time he just sat back and grinned.

And more noise, from that side of the room. "Mister Farley! A quieter watch for your next, please! Your fellow students need to concentrate. Though, well done."

One, two, three circles. Flick. "Horolos!"

There was a bit more of a change this time - the numbers had changed again and the center part of the lock had disappeared, replaced by the two hands of a clock. They didn't move, but at least she was getting there! Still had to work on getting rid of the rest of the lock and actually making it look like a clock, though.

At least she could practice Reverto again.

With a flick of her wand, she said, "Reverto!" And...YAY! The clock-like parts had changed back into their original lock-like parts. She getting better at Reverto at least! YAY!

Or it could just be beginner's luck but she tried not to think that negatively.

Preston nodded in response to her thanks before moving on.

Twirling her wand, she concentrated on the spell before tapping the wand and saying, ""Horo-" Oh...wait. Wrong wand movement. Silly Arya.

Glancing at her notes, she looked at the wand movements and turned back to her lock. Turning her wand in three circles she repeated. "Horolos!"

The lock changed from a silver to a light goldish color. Meh, it was a start.

Preston once again checked, from a distance, on the distracted Hufflepuff. She seemed to be doing well, and so he kept his distance.

"Reverto...re-VER-toe, no...re-ver-TOE. That was it." Adelyn thought to herself, trying to remain calm. She wanted this to be easy, but she knew it wasn't going to be. She took a deep breath, as the Professor came around, transfiguring everyone's object. Adelyn barely had time to blink before her silver bangle was transformed before her eyes into a rubberband. "Oh!" She heard herself say quietly once she realized it. "It's okay, Adelyn...it's okay. Just, use the spell. You can change it back. Can't be that hard, right?" She sighed, thinking to herself.

Adelyn studied the rubberband. It was just a common, every day rubberband. What more could she say about it? She pulled out her parchment again, taking note of the new properties.

What is the item: a simple rubberband.
Size: fits around a wrist.
Shape: round?
Texture: smooth.
Color: tan.
Weight: very lightweight.
Defining markings: none that I can see.

Finally, Adelyn was ready to try the spell. She moved her wand in the motion, simply testing it out; a swish from the bottom left to the upper right. Easy enough. She closed her eyes, picturing the way the bangle should be, then opened them to see the rubberband. "I can do this." She thought to herself. Then, she swished her wand, saying: "Reverto!" Adelyn looked down at her desk. It was still a rubberband. "No big deal. You can't get everything on the first try. Just try again." She thought to herself, before swishing her wand again and saying "Reverto!" The rubberband had changed color to silver, and she could faintly make out the engraving. That was better.

Adelyn tried once more, picturing the bangle clearly in her head, not noticing the rest of the class. "Reverto!" She said, clearly and confidently. Looking down at the place where the rubberband once sat, was her bangle. Adelyn smiled to herself, and reached out to touch the smooth silver of her child bangle.

Adelyn felt herself blush a deep shade of scarlet. The class was continuing and she had just finished changing her bangle back! "Oh no...I really hope this Professor doesn't hate me..." She thought, extremely worried, and anxiously scribbled down the notes he had written on the board. "Horolos...hor-eh-los...I think I've got that much." She said to herself, then proceeded to practice the wand movement. Three tight clockwise circles, then a flick. Not so bad. Looking down at the lock, she performed the movement while saying "Horolos!" Nothing. Adelyn sighed, but not to be discouraged, tried again. "Horolos!" This time, the lock changed color; from silver to a light gold. Another try: "Horolos!" Finally, the lock changed into a simple, gold pocket watch; like the one her father had. "Yes!" Adelyn grinned at her success.

Looking down at the pocket watch, Adelyn said "Reverto!" changing it back to the lock. In her mind, she pictured a more complex clock; the one that sat on the mantle back home! It was wooden with a flower design; she could do it. She concentrated hard on what she wanted, then took a breath before saying "Horolos!" In front of her sat the clock from back home. "Awesome." Adelyn smiled, although it was probably just luck.

Preston took notice of the girl's progress before continuing.

Hmm, so since the pocket watch wasn't working, that meant Fletcher hadn't performed the spell 100% correctly. He sat it down, closed his eyes to concentrate, and then performed Re-Ver-TOE nonverbally on it so it became a master lock again.

Okay. Second try. He could do this, and he could do it without saying the spell out loud. He was good at Transfiguration for Merlin's sake!

The boy concentrated on the mental image of a real, working, ticking pocket watch like he'd almost just produced. Then he quickly moved his wand in three clockwise circles and poked at the lock with a quick jab, thinking HOROLOS to himself.

And this time.... a soft ticking sound alerted Fletcher to the fact that he'd mastered the spell. Sweeet, now he had a real gold-plated pocket watch! Awesome.

Locks into clocks. Hehe.

Gold decided this would be easier, than step one. To begin with, the professor had not asked fifth years and above to give the spell a non-verbal try. That considered, it would be simple to perform - Gold had never had any great difficulty, with verbal magic.

Especially transformational.

She acted out the wand-movement, without the incantation, to make sure she had it down correctly. One, two, exactly three clock-wise circles, polished off with a somewhat short flick. She tried it again, repeated the incantation to herself a few times, and then looked down at the combination lock, on her table. The similarities were, of course, there; but that did not mean the transfiguration would not require focus.

Pocketwatch. Pocketwatch.

"Horolos!"

The combination lock vanished, replaced by a pocketwatch. Gold beamed at it, and then raised a hand. "Can we try this spell non-verbally, sir?" She asked because, you know, some spells can not be performed non-verbally. Better ask and be a fool for a minute, than not ask and remain one forever, right? Gold believed in the principle, at any rate.

Well, most of the time.

Size: quite large
Shape: square
Texture: soft, smooth
Color: yellow, black
Weight: somehow light
Defining markings:

Sophia looked at her wand, then at the pillow. She just closed her eyes, breathed deeply, then made then made the wand movement. And said, "Reverto!." Nothing happened. She did it again, "Reverto!" When she looked at the object, it was her scarf again. She smiled. She knew she likes Transfiguration so much.

Sophia took a lock. Picturing a watch in her mind, she continued to the spell.
Clockwise circle....
Another clockwise circle...
LAST clockwise circle....
Flick
then "Horolos!"

She looked at her transfigured item. She was smiling when she saw a watch. But after a few seconds she frowned, something's missing -- it has no two hands.

She was determined to do the spell, she untransfigured it first, "Reverto!" Back to a lock.

Trying again,
clockwise circle..
another clockwise circle..
last clockwise circle
flick
"HOROLOS!"

She looked at her lock, but it was not a lock anymore, it was a pocket watch --- and she was happy - it has hands!!

Wenzlebug 05-24-2010 03:39 AM

Taking the box which was passed to him by his classmate, he merrily took a rather dull-looking, scantily-detailed lock and passed on the box. He looked at the lock, studying it with a skeptical gaze. He then cocked an ear to the professor as he spoke. Hearing that the professor was already giving instructions concerning about the lock, he listened to him fully and tried to eliminate his own preoccupations.

Subsequently--after finally knowing what they needed to do--Cedric gripped his wand firmly and was now about to try the spell recently taught by Professor Kingsley. He started picturing the lock into a new item, into an elegant intricately-detailed watch . He'd like its efficient inner parts could be perfectly seen and with its text, written in gold and italics. And he, immensely concentrating and ignoring all the noises done by the other people around, did the wand movement. Three tight, clock-wise circles and a flick at the end! Hor-eh-los! There, faster than a single blink, the lock obligingly transfigured into a pocketwatch. And he was now waiting for their professor to look at his work and find out if he did good enough or he rather need more practice.

Preston came around, looking at the watch. "Yes, well done, well done. Another?"

----

"You are all doing exceptionally well," he said raising his voice so the entire class could hear. "Fifth years and older, I encourage you to try this spell nonverbally, though it might prove more difficult, depending on the complexity of the watch you are trying to make." He continued around the desks. "Everyone else, keep at it. You should be striving for easy transfigurations that are swift and focused."

Reaching the front of the room, Preston leaned against his desk and crossed his arms over his chest, watching.

Haha. Even though the Professor was telling him off, Jimbo was still being congratulated. That means he really was doing good. Yay!

Jimbo practiced the spell a couple more times to make sure he was able to do it properly every time. He messed up a bit but for the most part, he could get it right 70-80% of the time. So, that was good. That was progress. And that was a non-fail. Which is good.

He managed to get the spell right and perfect without having to check whether the clock was working or not because once he turned the lock into the clock - (ha!) - it was already ticking and keeping time. Soooo, WIN FOR JIMBO! YAY!

Arya had....gotten distracted again. Though not by the thoughts she had pushed back, but by another student's clock. glancing over at said student she ran her fingers through her hair and turned back to her lock. It was completly gold by now, but still looked like a lock.

Twirling her wand, a random thought not relevent to the class before she was able to turn her attention to the lock. Gold pocket watch, gold.....pocket....watch....

She motioned her wand with three small circles. "Horolos!"

This time the lock's numbers changed from its numbers code to the face of the wand in her mind. Using the wand to scratch her head, she stared at the lock/watch for a moment before continuing her practicing.

Sophia felt encouraged when her professor told her to try another one. "Reverto!" and the pocket watch turned into a lock again. She pictured once more a pocket watch -- think of a different and somewhat unique --- then she thought of the clock her family has in their house -- it was an antique. She didn't know if that's considered "complex" and she wasn't sure if she can do it, but she just tried.

Three clockwise circles - Flick - "HOROLOS!"

And the place of the lock was occupied by an antique clock.

Gold nodded, politely. "Yes, sir."

NOW.

Reverto. She reverted the pocketwatch back into the combination lock, and eyed it for a bit. Non-verbals. Those were always tougher. Gold focused on the lock, though her mind was a hazy picture of a pocketwatch. Three clockwise circles, a little but firm flick -

Horolos.

Fail. Complete fail. The lock didn't even budge. Gold frowned, focused harder. She could do this. Horolos.

She was making progress.

Better.

Whoops. His bad.

Treyen corrected the minor error and wondered how come the spell had worked before. Perhaps he did pronounce it right, but wrote the pronunciation entirely wrong.

Yeah. That was it. But no time for wondering!

Time to get his lock and FIND his WAND, because he'd fallen behind somehow. And there was no time to waste. He didn't, though, within a second he already had his lock, and was still looking for his wand....wand....wand...where are youuuu?!

Er, looking nervously around, because he thought he'd lost it, Treyen found the wand underneath his bag. Apparently, the wand was trying to find its way home. Nice.

He took it, and searched through his notes. Horolus. Okay.

The little Lockhart placed the lock in the table and wand-at-hand he made three tight circles and then....FLICK! "Hor-eh-los!" he said, pointing at his lock, and imagining a watch.

There was no lock anymore, or at least not something black and silver, but something gold made its way between a couple puffs of smoke, which he thought were not meant to happen but didn't matter, because he HAD A POCKET WATCH! He was enjoying Transfiguration just because he was getting the spells right.

But, er, wait, isn't a pocket watch supposed to have numbers on it?!

Oh, that's no good. It looked pretty, but instead of numbers there were images. Images he had no idea where they've come from, since he specifically thought of numbers. That's okay. "Re-ver-TOE!" he said, flicking his wand, and the lock appeared again.

Excitement. Excitement. He was getting things done!

Oh. Three tight clockwise circles. That was his mistake. Treyen cleared his throat. And truly re-focused on the numbers, this time was a bit easier since he knew how the watch had turned out to look like. "Horolus!" he said, followed by the three tight clockwise circles and a quick flick.

The outcome.

A pocket watch. Like the one above. But with numbers. Not images. Except. There were 24 numbers, instead of the 12. Oh, no biggie. He'd manage to accomplish so much in so little time that he was perfectly happy with the result.

He'll try again, no worries.

BearyMay 05-24-2010 08:50 AM

"Oh my mistake." she said to herself.

"Reverto" she tapped.
One,Two and Three flick "Horolos!" and the lock finally turned into a pocket watch.
"Yay!" she smiled.

Maxilocks 05-24-2010 10:36 AM

Okayyy.

Combination lock, into a pocketwatch. Golden pocketwatch, one that reflected her name. AND was prettily-plated. Gold concentrated on that, on a huge dial that had fancy numbering, and tried the spell again.

Once clockwise circle. Two clockwise circles. Three. Polished off with the flick that she had now grown accustomed to.

Horolos.

Viola!

In front of her sat, no longer a combination lock, but a fat, gold-plated pocketwatch. Gold beamed at, and then petted, it. Then she reverted the object back into a lock, and gave the spell another shot. She was able to carry it out without a hitch, this time round.

Score!

Professor Kingsley continued to watch, generally pleased with the amount of success, and lack of total disaster, in his classroom.

Scanning the room with his eyes, he was on the lookout for anyone who might need help, but had not yet asked.

Leaning his hands on the desk, he spoke loudly to get everyone's attention.

"Finish up with this attempt, and then turn your watch or clock back into a lock and come forward to put it back in the box."

He looked around the room at some of the creations... and some of the students who looked as if they might want to keep things. "The spell will wear off, so even if I did let you take it, it would be a lock again, soon enough."

ooc: a little more time for folks with this and then we'll move on.

Right, right.

Reverto.

Gold placed her wand on her desk, as the gold-plated pocketwatch transformed back into the combination lock she had begun with, and then quietly rose to her feet, to do as they had been instructed.

She headed to the front of the class, where the box sat, and gently replaced the combination lock back in.

There.

leshley 05-24-2010 01:10 PM

Right! She listened to the professor's instruction. Smiling with her wand pointed to the clock, she said, "Reverto!" And there was the lock again. She then returned the lock to the box.

----

"A reminder to the class," he said, concerned that some were not following. "You are to be using horolos to transfigure your lock into a watch or a clock. Please stay on task."

He continued to patrol the classroom, on the lookout for distracted students.

Sighing, Lysandra concentrated back on the silver wall clock. Making the wand movements of three tight clockwise circles, she said Horolos. Concentrating like she never concentrated before, the lock lost its latch like the last time, the turning knob flattened out, the shape stretched out more to the size of a wall clock. The silver stayed on the exterior rim, and on the interior where the numbers layed turned a bright white. Two silver hands appeared from the middle. There, I did it she said, pleased with herself.

Adelyn looked at the wooden clock that sat in front of her on the desk. She still had enough time to try once more. "Reverto!" She said clearly, and the clock changed back to lock. Thinking, she pictured another clock in her head, and then said, "Horolos!" The lock changed into a stylish, gold and maroon Gryffindor wristwatch. Adelyn smiled, lovely. Then she heard the Professor asking them to return the locks to their original state and return them to the box. "Reverto!" She said, and watched the lock go back to normal. Adelyn stood up, walked forward and placed her lock in the box, then sat back down and awaited further instructions.

BearyMay 05-24-2010 02:20 PM

"Reverto." and the pocket watch turned back into the lock. Standing up, Dianna walked towards the box and placed it in.

PatInTheHat 05-24-2010 02:52 PM

Arya was repeatedly tapping the lock/watch with her wand, her eyes closed in atempts to hold the mental image.

Tap...tap....tap....

She spun her wand in three tight circles and said, "Horolos!"

Opening her eyes, she finally saw a completly transformed into pocket watch. Picking up the watch, she inspecting it to make sure that it was fully transformed before placing it back on the table. She had placed it back on the desk and pointed her wand at it to untransfigure it, when the watch did the job for her.

A slight frown on her face, she stared at the lock for a moment. She had thought she had concentrated enough to keep it in watch form for more than a minute or two. Sighing, she picked up the lock and placed it in the box up front, sparing the professor a small smile.

Then she sat at her desk, pulling her feet under her as she absently twirled her, glancing around the room as she waited for the next part of class.

LilFox06 05-24-2010 03:04 PM

Carter tried "Horolos" a second time. This time the lock turned into a wall clock, with hands and all. Pleased with himself he changed it back to a lock. He then did as instructed and deposited it in the box.
