Nia slowly raised her hand. She was still unsure of the whole 'seeing into the future' thing, but she was happy in scientifics. So that was where she based this answer. Logic and reason. Using her current knowledge, and applying it to the question posed.

"Glass, or similarly transparent material, is used - which I'm guessing is something to do with it being like a lens for focusing light. The spherical shape then, of a crystal ball, focuses the light and mind into the centre of the ball. This focus and intent helps with scrying, with the light bit aiding in the formation of shapes to interpret." She paused. "And I'm thinking any size would work, but the bigger the ball, the more light is can let through and the easier it is to use for visualisation of images?" She chuckled before adding a tad more. "And most people use a stand. To stop the crystal ball rolling away and possibly breaking, and because it is smaller and thus blocks less light than holding the ball in your hand. Less fingerprints to clean too."

Can anyone describe to me what that might look like? What are some of the standards we use for crystal balls that are used in readings?"
Oh, but that was all technical. "They're not actually perfectly round, are they, sir?" Gold asked. "Spherical?"

Or was it the other way round? Gold!fail.

There was other stuff she had come across, too. "I've read that people who design crystal balls pay special attention to the quality and physical properties of the kind of glass, or reflective surface, they use," Gold offered. She wasn't a Seer, alright. Don't expect awesome answers. Divination is something you either get, or don't. Gold knew the theory pretty well, could even get results, but she knew she wasn't going to start predicting the next day's weather, anytime soon. She simply had no interest in that.

"One would want a crystall ball that has a well-defined refractive index, so that the image one gets is brighter. Standard glass is 1.5ish, I think, and that works well, though sapphire, bromine and pure flint glass actually make for much better crystal balls, and starlite citrine ones are highly, highly prized. Of course, those are more expensive, and they can actually start fires if they're brought in contact with light that's too bright, or really inflammable matter. That's one of the reasons why Seers or Diviners work don't work in open lights, and stay away from really sunny spots."

Concentration would be another, of course. Maybe a more important one, in fact, because there were charms to take care of the other stuff. Gold could list a dozen more as well but, for now, she was just glad that the classroom she was in was comfortable and peaceful-ish.

She liked being able to work in harmony.

"Oh, and there are stands and charms, sir. The former to make sure the crystal ball doesn't just roll away at random; and the latter to ensure its safety. Crystal balls can be pretty costly or precious -" Not just money-wise, either. Precious, to the owner -- "- and I've always felt like they grow on one, adapt to a person." That was what she felt, and it didn't have to apply to anyone else. But Gold offered the information out loud anyway, because it was on her mind.

AND she had rambled.

But it felt alright.

Dianna raised her hand very slowly.
"Well crystallomancy is divination by a crystal ball. Eh, I guess you'll want a clean crystal ball so that you'll have a better time looking in the future.." that was all Dianna could say. Nothing more and nothing less. Well she tried her best.

Patroclus ventured an answer,
" A crystal ball would be roughly the size of a Bludger, and i would have to say would hurt just as much, but luckily they don't move on their own accord. They can appear clear, or some translucent, others look as if they contain a wisp of cloud with their glass or crystal bounds. Some come with stands, that involve a ring and legs to lift them off the table or ground, where as others just sit on comfy pillows!"
The way Patroclus was talking about the crystal balls some could have thought he was talking of a pet, but to some people they were just as special.

Crystal balls. Well.

"They're made of crystal," Abby said, hand raised. "Usually, at least. Like quartz or something. They can be made of glass." Just so long as it was clear. Very clear. That was important for the focus of the scryer.

"The ball can't have any air bubbles trapped inside it," she said. That too would affect the scrying. It could throw off the reading. Cause misinterpreted signs. The such.

"If I'm not mistaken, they've got to be perfectly round too. I mean, no flat bottom to keep it from rolling. The ball should have a stand for that," she added. "And I think there are a few rules about the stand too." Hmm, something like how the ball was supposed to sit on the stand. Abby couldn't really recall.

"As for the size, isn't usually up to the scryer, Professor?" she asked. It was more of a preference thing, as far as she had read.

Celandine looked around, listening to the given answers, offering the tiiiiniest shake of her head. Her hand went up. "Mine is obsidian, professor." Which was definitely not any form of transparent or translucent. "I suppose it works similarly to the black mirror technique I mentioned before, and actually some famous Seers used an obsidian speculum for their scrying. Like Nostradamus and John Dee." Cela's fingertips went to the obsidian pendant she wore around her neck and she fell silent, thoughtful.

"It really depends on the person scrying," Nolan explained. "For example, the crystal ball I have on display on my desk is about the size of a grapefruit, but it's more personal preference. You can use ones small enough to fit in your hands, or ones that are even bigger than mine," he told them.

Meep. Just as her suspicions were correct too. They were going to be staring into a crystal ball. Yea, that wasn't going to happen. Mostly because her eyes won't be open for much longer.
"If there are any spells on the crystal balls, they're usually for protections sake," Nolan said with a smile, tapping the crystal ball on his desk that had a faint white glow around it. "People who are fanatical about preventing damage to their crystal balls," Like himself, "Usually put some sort of Inpentrable charm of some sort around it. Sometimes spells are used to enhance the foggy effect many people think they see on the inside, but crystal balls are generally not hollow--the foggy stuff on the inside that many people think they're seeing is usually just the light reacting to the surface of the ball and making it APPEAR as if things are moving inside. That's why they're so handy when it comes to scrying, because everyone sees something different, just like with the tea leaves," he explained.

Nolan chuckled a bit at the boy's description of crystal balls. "You can use pillows if you want, but it's a bit difficult to keep it from rolling around at times, plus the pillow can reflect off the surface of the orb and give you weird readings, so you have to be careful!"

"Yes they can, but for the sake of todays lesson, we'll be using crystal orbs," he explained to the Ravenclaw. "And yes, very good! There can't be any air bubbles for that precise reason--it could greatly throw off your reading, not to mention its a complete pain to try and look around the bubbles," he added with a tiny chuckle. "And the ball DOES need to be completely round, and while a stand is not necessary, like in the case of the crystals that are small enough to fit in your hand, a wooden or metal stand will do just fine."

"They did indeed," Nolan said with a grin to the Head Girl. "Obsidian is a fairly common material found in crystal orbs--amethyst, quartz, beryl, and calcite are all fairly common as well. Very good answers to everyone!" he added, nodding at the students who had answered but he had not gotten a chance to address personally.

Alright, enough talking, time for practical stuff! "Now, some of you may find crystal gazing to be much simplier than the tea leaves. Just like with those readings, you can either focus on one specific question or topic as you are meditating and conducting your reading, or you may do a general reading to get some new information about the past, present, future--you never know what you may see! Now, come on up here and grab a crystal ball and stand and head back to your desks...PLEASE be very careful, I've taken many precautions to prevent them from breaking if they are dropped, but you can't ever be too safe!" he said.

He walked back around his desk, moved his example orb out of the way, and waved his wand, levitating a tray of crystal balls in various sizes and materials onto the desk.

"When you get back to your desk, take a note on the size of the orb you chose, and the type of crystal its made out of, such as quartz or calcite. Then wait for further instructions," he told them before motioning for them to come up and take an orb.

OOC: Feel free to choose which type of crystal and size your charrie gets. There's no set number of quartz orbs, or calcite, or whatever, so its up to you!

Alex sighed going up and collecting a crystal ball, she didn't care so she just chose a medium size and went back to her seat carefully. Setting it down she sat writting down the size and studying it for a few moments to see what type it was, she realised it was made of Quartz also writting it down in her notes. She then put her quill down awaiting the Professor to begin telling them what to do.

Selena walked over to the tray of crystal balls. She picked up a medium sized quartz orb and set down on the table. It was a bit smaller than the size of a baby's head, but she was pretty sure this thing was heavier than a child's head. She set it down on her table and looked at it. Pretty. Selena took note of the way it looked, a rough estimate of the size, 7 inches around? Then described it. After all, she was going to have to wait, might as well make her notes better.

Nia headed to the front and selected her crystal blue. Since she'd now learnt that it didn't need to be transparent, she opted for a softly blue tinted calcite option. Was the colour choice predictable? Probably. But heh, this was divination afterall.

She took it in both hands, careful to not put too many fingerprints over the ball (yes, Nia was particular about fingerprints on things, particularly glossy photos) and returned to her desk. Once there, she cleared some space and placed it on a stand with rather ornate legs. Now, to judge the size. It was, well, about the size of a bludger. She noted this down, incase it meant something interesting when she was interpreting stuff later.

Mwaha!

Keeping her black eyes downcast, the Slytherin maneuvered her way up to the front, making sure not to touch anyone and taking off her sweater at the same time. Reaching the front, Evelyn looked at all the orb things before choosing one that had a more golden tone to it. Hehe. It was the prettiest after all. Wrapping her sweater around it, she carefully carried it back up to her table and set it gently down before picking up her notebook and quill.

So, what size was it? How were they supposed to tell? Frowning, she stared at it for a moment before bringing her left hand up and making it into a fist. Hmm....'bout a fist and a half. For sure. Writing it down in her notebook, afterward she set the two on the table towards the side before sitting patiently and glancing around. The Gryffindor boy did not go unnoticed by her after a few minutes of the start of the lesson, however, she didn't really want him to see her. And it was part of the reason she was mostly staring at the table instead of looking around...which is what she should've been doing now.

Gah! "Make sure I don't fall asleep." she muttered to Rae before rubbing her still stinging eyes and going back to staring at the crystal ball.

Patroclus left his seat and moved towards the front of the class. Starring at all the crystal balls, Patroclus' indecisive trait reared its head as he struggled to select his ball.
Do I want the Emerald one, or Quartz? Patroclus mused to himself.
However his choice was made easy when his eyes fell on a dark volcanic glass ball. He was drawn too it as through its core, a crimson fleck could be seen, like a secret heart within the Orb.
Picking it up gently Patroclus carried it in the crook of his arm, it resting on the folds of his robe. At his table he placed it on the desk, wrapping his scarf at its base so it did not roll.

SPOILER!!: Patroclus' Parchment

Crystal Ball.

Size: 15 cm across its widest part.
Crystal: Obsidian, Black, with a red fault in centre from top to bottom.

She went back to her seat and looked at it. Hmm... Alright. Apparently they were supposed to be able to see things in them later. CHyea right. She took notes on her ball.

curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

Nolan watched as each student selected their crystal ball...some of them were choosing orbs that he had not expected them to pick. Ah well, to each his own!

"Scrying, as I said previous, may seem fairly easy to some of you. In just a moment, I'm going to dim the lights--no falling asleep!" he added, glancing at Evelyn who looked ready to pass out, "And we'll get started. I'll pass out some candles around once I do that, and you must place these lit candles BEHIND your crystal orb. This will be the only light in the room. Then you simply take a few breaths and relax, and focus on your crystal ball. Clear your mind if you're doing a general reading, or focus on one question or thought as you're looking. Don't be discouraged if you don't see something at first, it takes practice! Watch the time too--once you've been focusing for 20 minutes, STOP and take notes on what you saw and what you think it might be," he said.

After that, he waved his wand and the blinds closed in the room, and he began handing out the candles, placing them on the desks of each student. "If you don't have your list of symbols from last lesson, I have more copies on my desk. If you have any questions, please ask!" he added.

And with that, they were off!

Selena set the candle behind the crystal orb and thought of a question. Ah, perfect. Selena lit up the candle and cleared her mind. Taking a deep breath she felt a sense of inner calm. She focused on the question in mind. What was she going to be like by the time she graduated? She focused on in. That strange feeling still with her. She felt so calm... She looked into the quartz. A tree... no... there was more than one... family unity... She continued to look into it, as it told her the future. A leaf as well... it meant change over time... she focused on the question. She wanted answers.

Cringing when the Professor made the room even more darker, Evelyn sat up straight and looked around, hoping to find something that would catch her attention and amuse her keep her awake.

Finding nothing at first, Evelyn felt as if she were doomed for this class. There was no way she was going to be able to stay awake now. Looking down at the golden orb in the dimly lit room, it almost looked as if it were slightly glowing, what with it's goldenish color to it, but one quick rub of her eyes, and it was gone. Mostly because now the whole room was blurry.

Blinking, the Slytherin shut them for a moment before opening them once more to a more clear room and noticing, that they weren't stinging anymore. Perhaps the dark of the room helped? Seemed like it. Smiling sleepily at the professor as he placed a few candles on their table, Evelyn scooted hers behind her crystal orb ball and made sure her sweater was well out of the way first so it wouldn't catch fire. Yush. Fire. FIRE! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Smiling, girl leaned forward and placed her elbows on the table before holding her head up on her palms before looking at the fire from the candle behind the crystal ball. The fire...was so pretty in the dark! Could she stare at THAT instead of the globe-y thing? Hmm? HMM?! Yes?

Alex sighed placing the candle behind the crystal ball; She then thought of a question firmly repeating, 'what does the future hold for me and Zane Hayes' before lighting it. She stared into her crystal ball focusing on the question she saw blurry symbols..after three minutes she stopped and wrote two of the symbols down.

Quote:
Alexandrie Malfoy-Lupin's Crystallomancy Reading
Symbol 1: Flower
Symbol 2: Ivy.
Alex sighed focusing back onto the ball and the question. She saw another symbol she realised, it looked like a heart? Let's not tell Selena about this one she decided

Quote:
Alexandrie Malfoy-Lupin's Crystallomancy Reading
Symbol 1: Flower
Symbol 2: Ivy.
Symbol 3: Heart.
Alex sighed having a wild urge to bang her head on the desk, unknowingly letting her note on her reading wide open so if Zane wanted he could easily sneak a peek at it. She focused back onto the ball staring into it feeling werid.

Cela decided to pretend to be doing this. That was the safe bet. That way she wouldn't accidently go crazy. She selected a quartz ball, which was actually the least appealing one for her, and settled to pretend to be doing stuff.

Standing up at the desk, Destiny placed her hands on her hip and tapped her foot impatiently. Aren't crystal balls supposed to pick the person, sorta like a wand? She waited for what seemed like HOURS, watching each ball carefully for any type of movement.

Well, once again, crystallmancy was BORING.

Turning her head slightly, she seen the other people just picking up a ball. Oh, well that was FUN..not. Taking her hands off her hips, she reached out, and grabbing the BIGGEST and CLEAREST ball and stand she could find, walked back to her desk.

SPOILER!!: Destiny's parchment

My crystal ball is HUGE and CLEAR!

Listening to the Professor speak, she couldn't help but smirk towards Evelyn. Dark and candles, yeah, the girl was going to fall asleep. She wanted to think of things to do while her friend was asleep, but she couldn't. She needed to 'clear her mind'. Pfft, that was easy.

Closing her eyes, Destiny took a few breaths before reopening them. Raising an eyebrow, she staaaaaared into the crystal ball, just waiting for something to show.

Gah, she needed to blink soon!

As the room darkened Patroclus lit his candle and placed it behind his Orb, which before his eyes seemed to light up.
The red streak that ran through the obsidian caught the candle light and gave the orb the feeling as through it's heart was beating with the flickering light.
"Ohhh spooky" Patroclus mumbled.

He ran his hands through his hair, then folded them on the table in front of him and starred mindlessly into the orb. It was hard to empty his head, it was full of thoughts, that would not go away.
He breathe and tried to focus
