Across from the main doors stand four giant hourglasses filled with gemstones. The stones in the bottom indicate the current number of house points each house has earned so far.

Even though Nancy had sworn herself not to look at Hourglasses anymore, since it was nothing but depressing, she just couldn't keep her blue eyes from darting over to one the glasses, the one filled with emeralds. A small sigh escaped her lips as she noticed that Slytherin was still way behind the other houses which was just...depressing. Duh. That was exactly the reason she'd initially sworn herself not to look in the first place.

Slowly coming to a halt in front of the hourglasses with a frown plastered across her face Nancy only now noticed that she wasn't the only one who'd stopped to look at the house points, no, a Ravenclaw girl who looked about her age was standing right next to her. Since she'd seen the girl around during classes already and her approaching couldn't not have been noticed by Starling she thought it was probably rude not to even greet her. That was why Nancy muttered with another glance at the Slytherin hourglass, "Hi Starling." Then with a rather sour nod towards the Ravenclaw hourglass she added, "Well...looks good for Ravenclaw this year, rigth?"

With a slight jump, she turned to eye the Slytherin who had joined her by the hourglasses. Who was she? Right? She had been in one of her classes. Starling swore she knew this girl's name. What was it? Natasha? No, that wasn't it.

Nancy.

There it was. Remembering now, Starling gave her a small smile. "Hey Nancy." She said, looking at her classmate, who didn't seem to be too happy about Ravenclaw being in the lead. "Yeah, Ravenclaw is doing pretty well." She nodded in agreement, not really want to brag or anything. Some people got really touchy over house rivalries. "I'm sure Slytherin will bring it up though." She said positively.

Realizing she was still twirling her hair around her finger, she stopped and let the blonde lock fall back into his rightful place. "So how have your other classes been?" She asked, trying to think of a casual topic for conversation.

Nancy simply stared at the Slytherin hourglass like by doing that the amount of emeralds in it would miraculously double, but unfortunately her plan didn't exactly work. Not at all. Sighing she half-turned her head back to Starling who'd just addressed her with her correct name, unlike certain other people, and gave her a small smile. "Mhm...you should watch out, though, Hufflepuff's catching up." Which was just a random information which was pretty obvious and had probably already been noticed by the Ravenclaw girl as well, but whatever. Smalltalk was always talking about random obvious things. And small things apparently as well since otherwise it wouldn't have been named smalltalk. Weird, though. Why small?

Shaking her head slightly at this unanswered question inside her head Nancy smirked slightly at Starling while saying, "Oh yes, I'm sure we will." They definitely were. They were talking about Slytherins after all. Duh. The third year raised an eyebrow at the girl's next question concerning classes before replying with a shrug, "Oh, you know. The horrible classes are still as horrible as they've always been despite the new professors." Although they'd improved. A bit at least. "How about you? You behind with homework already?"

Starling nodded in answer to her question. "Yeah, I can't believe how behind I am already. It's insane how behind I am." Starling said, blue eyes worried. "What about you? Keeping up with everything?" She asked, hoping her Slytherin classmate was doing better in her studies than she was. "The professors this year aren't as bad as last year but their still pretty bad." She grimaced, thinking of what happened to Hogwarts last year. "Thank god, it's not like that anymore." She said.

Noticing the bottom of her pants had accumulated some dust, she bent down to brush it off of her. Satisfied that there wasn't anything else, she straighted up to look at Nancy.

Upon hearing what Starling was saying Nancy grinned at the girl in a sympathetic way while shaking her head slightly at the thought of the pile of homework which was still lying around in the Common Room waiting to be done. "Oh, believe me, you're not alone with that. Is it just me or do we get a lot more homework this term?" That last History of Magic homework, for instance, was like sooooo long and took so much time to do. The professors really were going crazy lately.
"Oh yeah. Remember that History of Magic professor, Professor Lainey, I mean-" She leaned in slightly before with a roll of her eyes continuing, "-that woman was just plain crazy, right? That new professor, though, well, he isn't as crazy as she was but still. Making us take off our shoes and socks during his first lesson!" Nancy gave the girl a incredulous look before her blue eyes flashed back to the hourglasses she was standing in front of and her facial expression changed into a frown once again. Slytherin couldn't be last place, it just couldn't.

"We totally got so much more homework this term!" Starling exclaimed in agreement. "What are they trying to do? Kill us?" She asked, slightly frustrated with her homework load now.

Hearing the name Lainey, she had to hold back laughter. Oh that professor. Starling had quite a hilarous time with Lainey and Izzie back in her class. Maybe it was because they made fun of everything. That was probably why it was the most enjoyable class. And they got to sit in circles on the floor and draw, which earned them points.

"Oh Lainey." Starling said, unable to hold that giggle in. "She was a pretty crazy teacher alright. Entertaining though." The blonde said laughing. "The new prof is not as crazy but almost right up there." She nodded, remembering how they all have to take off their shoes. It was so...weird. "Who does that? Asks the class to take off their shoes?" Starling laughed.

Walking slowly, Raiden drew close to the hourglasses, feeling himself in an odd mood. Something in his stomach was just refusing to settle down. He stared at the hourglasses forlornly; he'd been ill quite a bit and hadn't earned as many housepoints as he wished he could. His house was in dead last, and far behind even the third place house.

"Nicholai would have a breakdown if he saw this," he muttered softly. "I can't believe it... I need to start earning points like... right now."

He scratched the back of his head. Last term, all his points had come from homework and answering questions in class... how did you earn points other than that?

"Darn it. Darn it darn it darn it." The words ran into each other as he frowned.

Raiden started as a Hufflepuff boy suddenly appeared. More housepoints? The Greenhouses and the Groundskeeper... He'd heard that Sir Mr. Constantine was nice. Dan had talked about having his birthday party last year in the Pumpkin Patch...

"Why would you help me?" Raiden asked without thinking. "I thought that the other houses were supposed to try and keep us from earning points." Nancy frowned as her thoughts resumed to circle around the constantly increasing pile of homework before nodding enthusiastically once again at Starling's statement. "Exactly! I mean that's just impossible to manage. Well, if you have other things you want to do as well, that is. Like Quidditch, for instance." Then with a small snicker she added, "Oh, yes, that's what I suspect as well. That they're trying to kill us, I mean. But not only with the amount of homework, but, I mean, this DADA-assignment. Gee! I'm honestly surprised that nobody was seriously hurt during that." Okay, it had been fun but still, it could have ended badly as well.

At the girl's next words Nancy snorted slightly. Entertaining? Lainey? Uhm...okay. Whatever. "I guess that depends on what you consider entertaining. I think she was crazy." The third year said with a small shrug before resuming to tell Starling what she thought about their new HoM professor. "Yeah. As I said, he isn't as crazy as her. I sorta like our new Care of Magical Creatures professor, though." She added and a small smile tugged at the corner of her lips as she thought back at their last CoMC lesson.

Jack stared as Raiden started rambling "I like meeting new people aswell, I'm not sure if I like it here yet, and call me Jack, Hufflepuff is... alright" he answered the questions in one sentence, ok, this Raiden boy was actually too nice, Jack thought about something he'd seen in a comic, he wanted to try it out, Raiden seemed like hte perfect person, now, Jack just needed the right moment, he had a feeling it would be soon.

Alessia rounded the corner as the student came towards her... She had her wand out, because she was a predator and on the prowl! Slytherin with a badge at two o'clock! She quickly cast a toenail-growing hex!

Jack smiled and pulled his wand out, he made a swirling movement with his wand "Lenam" he whispered, he watched the spell hit Raiden and he slid his wand away, blinking innocently, now the boy could say nasty things, he had to.

Holy Merlin! Raiden looked up at the professor as she came around the corner and saw the wand barely in time. He pulled his own out of his sleeve and said the spell frantically. Nico had taught him last term to say his spells as if he meant them, and boy did he ever mean it when he shouted "PROTEGO" this time.

Unfortunately, that didn't help against whatever had just hit him from behind... and Raiden, looking quite surprised, stumbled forward. Had she cast something that could attack him from behind as well? He'd been waiting on guard since that class had ended, but he'd never asked if there were curses that could attack from the front and behind before.

"Merlin's pants," he said softly, staring at the professor and trying to breathe.

What was wrong with him? What exactly had she hit him with from behind?! Desperation started a slow boil in his stomach. He was saying rude things? To a professor, no less! A whimper, muffled by his hand yet still audible enough for his own ears, escaped him, and he put his wand hand on the spot where the other spell had hit him. What had it been?!

"You look like a gargoyle's backside," he blurted, and his desperation made him wobble. "nonononononono!"

He had... to...
