| | | Beginner/Remedial Arithmancy Review You enter the Arithmancy classroom to see neat and exactly-positioned rows of wooden desks and chairs, the latter of which have cushions in a myriad of colors and textures to match your comfort and liking. The walls are filled with thick wooden shelves, on which rest a seemingly endless number of Arithmancy texts and the occasional Ancient Runes and Divination reference. For those students who studied Arithmancy last year, the room looks very much the same, as does the woman awaiting your arrival.
When you look to the front of the room, you see a tall, blonde-haired woman sitting behind a desk made of dark angelique wood in an excessively large and comfortable-looking chair. On the desk is a small placard reading "Professor Macadrian A. Shackleton - Arithmancy," as well as a large stack of thin, bound booklets, an assortment of papers and quills, and several copies of the class textbook. She smiles at you as you enter the classroom and gestures for you to take a seat. As you glance up to the boards behind and to the sides of Professor Shackleton, you see a list of Arithmancy terms to be covered in today's review session: Quote: 1. Origins of Arithmancy
2. Pythagorean Number System
3a. The Core: The Life Path Number
3b. The Core: The Expression/Destiny Number
3c. The Core: The Heart's Desire/Soul Urge Number
3d. The Core: The Personality Number Have you done the reading yet? If not, you may want to glance over the appropriate chapters while you're waiting for Professor Shackleton to begin the review. |

She asked quietly, "Do you not have a birth certificate with a date on it? That is usually the number we use. If not, you can use the date you celebrate as your birthday. It may not indicate what the universe had destined for you from birth, but it will show what you yourself have brought to your own life by choosing such a date. 9+19+2055 = 2083.
2+0+8+3 = 13.
1+3 = 4. Professor Shackleton made her way passed another student's desk when she spotted a commonly made error. "Ah, you have fallen into a very common trap. As I explained, you need to reduce each number first, then add across, not add across first and then reduce. Your number should be calculated this way." Macadrian began making corrections on the student's paper so that it read: Quote:
09/19/2055
(0+9) + (1+9) + (2+0+5+5)
9 + 10 + 12
9 + (1+0) + (1+2)
9 + 1 + 3 = 13

Once he had finished, he looked over it thoughtfully before looking up the definition in the book. He read over it carefully, and was pretty confident in what it said, because it really did seem to describe his aim's in life in a generic way. The last two lines really caught Curt's eye, and the possible meanings really inspired him, You're destined for inspired leadership. Live up to the demands of devotional living and you shall be the leader your were born to be. Curt raised his hand, "I'm done over here Professor, is there anything you can tell me about it that the book can't?" He said, extremely interested. Professor Shackleton made her way over to Curt's desk, glanced over his work, and asked in response, "Well, did you have something specific in mind? The textbook has a rather complete explanation for the level that I would like you to know, although if you would like still more information, why don't you stop by my office and we can discuss it then, yes? I have plenty of references that can elaborate to even greater extents than our text. Plus, I have hot cocoa and cookies." Macadrian laughed as she headed back up to the front of the class.
She glanced at her watch and realized she needed to pick up the pace, "OK, I am going to give you some notes on the board for the remaining three Core numbers, and I would like you to copy them in your journals. Also, be sure to calculate each of these numbers for yourself and find the textbook translation. Please just give me one moment to jot it all down."

11 + 9 + 2047 =
2 + 9 + 13 (4)=
11 + 4 = 15
1 + 5 = 6

Hogwarts RPG Name: Rickey Hampton Fifth Year | Curt smiled as Professor Macandrian walked up and told him to stop by later for a further analysis of his Life Path number, cookies too? It sounded like a good time to him. "Sound's good Professor." Curt said with an enthusiastic nod of the head. He was most definately looking forward to that time.
Waiting for the Professor to jot down the rest of the notes, Curt couldn't help but read about some of the other life Path numbers...he had never really gone into much detail about this subject, and it was obviously more fascinating than he knew.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Sloane W. Fordyce First Year | Cheesy Mac With her wand moving so rapidly it was nearly a blur, Macadrian wrote the notes on the boards around the room. When she was finished with the second Core number, it read: Quote: Destiny Number
Reveals our purpose and what we must live up to by telling us the best direction and major accomplishment, thereby pointing the way to living a fulfilled life. Both opportunities and inner resources will come from this Core Number, which describes the area of your life that must be explored, developed, and embraced for your soul to grow to its full potential in this lifetime, and for you to be whole. Finding Your Expression/Destiny Number: Using the full name listed on your birth certificate, lay out your name and assign the appropriate number to each letter using the chart given in Chapter Two of the text. Figure each name separately, then add the reduced total of each name - first, middle(s), and last, then reduce that number to its single digit root number. Example (NOTE: Vowels recorded above and consonants below the name):
-1--1--91--1---9------1----5-6
MACADRIAN ASHLING SHACKLETON
4--3-49--5--1-83-57-18-323-2--5
(4+1+3+1+4+9+9+1+5) + (1+1+8+3+9+5+7) + (1+8+1+3+2+3+5+2+6+5)
37 + 34 + 36
(3+7) + (3+4) + (3+6)
10 + 7 + 9
(1+0) + 7 + 9
1 + 7 + 9 = 17
1 + 7 = 8
Destiny Number = 8 Once that was up on the board, Macadrian was abled to answer some of the other students questions and correct their work. Quote:

1+3=4 Macadrian spotted a mistake and pointed out, "You need to reduce each number first, then add across, not add across first and then reduce. Your number should be calculated this way: 9 + (1+0) + (2+0+5+5) = 9 + 1 + 12 = 9 + 1 + (1+2) = 9 + 1 + 3 = 13 = 4. As I explained to your classmate, the number may be the same here, but there are a variety of other calculations that do not work out so luckily. Be sure to learn the concept first before moving on to the rest." Quote:

It was discovered long ago that numbers which possessed a double of a single digit number were more powerful and held separate qualities than just the single digit alone. Technically, 44, 55, 66, 77, and so on are all Master Numbers. They just happen so infrequently that no one really understands what their true meanings are. Does that answer your question?"

Zoraida thought it was interesting there were numbers that occurred so rarely that no one knew what they were. When she had kids she was going to give them a shorter name. Zora wrote down her name then did the math. It was a bad sign when her first name was the shortest part at seven letters.
Once calculating her answers she started looking up the information in her book. Which unlike last year she actually bought so she would have one. Considering it came down to simple math and reading not wand waving she did enjoy this class.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Sloane W. Fordyce First Year | Cheesy Mac Professor Shackleton returned to writing notes on the board with her wand, this time for the Soul Urge Number. When she was done, the board read: Quote: Soul Urge Number
Reveals what you long for and what your soul wants to express in this lifetime. There are times when the Soul Number will dominate your energy, subordinating all other traits and characteristics, even those of the Life Path and Destiny Numbers. When this happens, your Soul Number will call you to people and places that resonate with your own energy. These times are asking you to hear the song of the soul, and are times to nurture and feed the very core of your being. Finding Your Heart's Desire/Soul Urge Number: Using the full name listed on your birth certificate, lay out your name and assign the appropriate number to each vowel using the chart given in Chapter Two of the text. Figure each name separately, then add the reduced total of each name - first, middle(s), and last, then reduce that number to its single digit root number. Example:
-1--1--91--1---9------1----5-6
MACADRIAN ASHLING SHACKLETON
(1+1+9+1) + (1+9) + (1+5+6)
12 + 10 + 12
(1+2) + (1+0) + (1+2)
3 + 1 + 3 = 7
Heart's Desire = 7 When that element of the Core was complete, Macadrian turned to another board and began jotting down the notes from the last element of the Core - the Personality Number. They read: Quote: Personality Number
Describes what others remember about you after a first encounter, helping you to make the best possible impression and inviting you to see yourself as others see you. Of course, what others see may not really be a true reflection of who you are, of your inner self, which is why we leave that to the Soul Number. Finding Your Personality Number: Using the full name listed on your birth certificate, lay out your name and assign the appropriate number to each consonant using the chart given in Chapter Two of the text. Figure each name separately, then add the reduced total of each name - first, middle(s), and last, then reduce that number to its single digit root number. Example:
MACADRIAN ASHLING SHACKLETON
4--3-49--5--1-83-57-18-323-2--5
(4+3+4+9+5) + (1+8+3+5+7) + (1+8+3+2+3+2+5)
25 + 24 + 24
(2+5) + (2+4) + (2+4)
7 + 6 + 6 = 19
1+9 = 10
1+0 = 1
Personality Number = 1 She turned to the class and requested, "Please copy down these notes and then do the calculations for yourselves. You will need this information in the later lessons I am teaching this term, so be sure to calculate it now or else you'll have to waste precious time doing it then. I will circulate around the room to check your work."

| Shoe!Girl │ Rebel Ravie │ Confundus Queen │ RP Addict Rhiannon rapidly tries to write down the notes on the destiny number, as well as the other core elements. She hopes that at least some of it is in the textbook, if she forgets anything. She adds what the professor says about Master numbers to her notes as well, figuring that it would be useful at some point.
She glances at Amelia as she thinks that maybe the subject of Arithmancy won't be as bad as she thought. It's math, but so much more that is interesting, she thinks. Then she sets to work calculating the next numbers. Rapidly writing down her name, she starts assigning numbers to the letters: Quote:
Rhiannon Elizabeth Todd
(9+8+9+1+5+5+6+5) + (5+3+9+8+1+2+5+2+8) + (2+6+4+4)
(4+8) + (4+3) + (1+6)
(1+2) + 7 + 7
3+7+7
1+7
Destiny number = 8
She then looks up the meaning for her calculation. Quote:
Your mission in life is to acquire command of self. Your purpose is to accomplish and flourish, using your skill at business and organization. Learning to embody your authentic nature and discover your own power and being visionary will move you toward your destiny. You're destined for material success. Get out there and be the masterful leader you were born to be.

| SS Senile Senior Qaz worked out her numbers and their meanings, as follows: Life Number
01/01/2051
(1) + (1) + (2+0+5+1)
1 + 1 + 8 = 10 = 1
According to the textbook: ONE (1): Your path will take you down the road to independence, and you'll learn its benefits standing on your own two feet and becoming a strong individual. Once you've honed these traits, you move to the next level - leadership. You're a born leader and your path in life will present you with many opportunities to demonstrate your ability. Your strong pioneering spirit, courage, and determination will serve you well along this road. Career/vocation options include fields where you can use your quick mental agility, such as business, health, government, or even a bookstore.
(c-1-c) + (1+c+c+ 9+6) + (c+9+c+c+c+6+c+c)
Qaz Artio Windsong
(8+v+8) + (v+9+2+v+v) + (5+v+5+4+1+v+5+7) Destiny Number
(8+1+8) + (1+9+2+9+6) + (5+9+5+4+1+6+5+7)
(17) + (27) + (42)
8 + 9 + 6 = 23 = 5
According to the textbook: FIVE (5): Your mission in life is to adjust, evolve, and advance. Your purpose is to embrace opportunity and autonomy and to follow your curiosity whever it leads you, all while using your resources and charm to keep you moving. Learning to express your ingenuity and being a free spirit will assist your movement toward your destiny. You're destined for liberation and freedom. Move forward and embrace change. Heart/Soul Number
Vowels:
1+ (1+9+6) + (9+6)
1 + (16) + (15)
1+7+6=14=5
According to the textbook: FIVE (5): Your primary desire is to be entirely unrestricted, followed closely by a passion for travel and change. You can't stand to feel confined or lulled by routine. You love to experience variety and the stimulation life can offer. In matters of the heart and friendship, you are exquisite and extraordinary, adventurous and ready to risk. But most of all, you crave variety. Personality Number
Consonants:
(8+8) + (9+2) + (5+5+4+1+5+7)
(16) + (11) + (27)
7 + 2 + 9 = 18 = 9
According to the textbook: NINE (9): Generous; gullible; excusing and kind-hearted; philosophical; warm and caring; idealistic and romantic; emotional and intuitive; fortunate; vibrant; accomplished; unable to make quick decisions; vulnerable; doesn't judge others on material accomplishments; sympathetic; greatly respected by others; clothes are striking with a flair for the dramatic; no tolerance for injustice; looks young for a long time. You may find yourself too involved in other people's problems and can become unbalanced by the emotional strain.
It sure was a lot of writing. Her hand was getting quite tired. |

| The REAL Sorting Hat: "Ravenclaw!" This monkey is bananas. Ariana set to work. Knowing she'd need extra parchment to correct her mistakes and just to have something to scribble on she bent down to retrieve four extra sheets and bent upwards again looking at the boards before her. Starting with the Destiny Number she wrote down her full name and began to work. Quote:
Vowels:-----------------1--9-1----1-------9----- 9-5-1-------1-----9 6
Full name:--------------A-r-i-a--n--a---- S-i-b-l-i-e-a-n---- C-a-s-t-i-o-r
Consanants:--------------9-----5--------1---5-3------5 -----3---1-2---9
Finishing the first part, she went on to calculate her Destiny Number. Quote:
(1+9+9+1+5+1) + (1+9+5+3+9+5+1+5) + (3+1+1+2+9+6+9)
26 + 38 + 31
(2+6) + (3+8) + (3+1)
8 + 11 + 4
First Name = 8
Middle Name = 11 (Master Number)
Last Name = 4
8 + (1+1) + 4
8+2+4
14 = 1+4
5
Ariana stopped writing and frowned. Raising her hand she looked up sheepsihly and asked, "Um Professor? I think I did this wrong. My middle name comes up as a master number so I'm not sure if I did the calculation correctly or no." She said looking sheepish.

Professor Shackleton had been wandering about the room, waiting for students to finish their work. The first two students to complete their work would receive house points for demonstrating a sufficient knowledge of the material. She told each of them, "You've done excellent work and were one of the first two students to finish! For that, I am awarding you each 3 points! Nice work! Quote:

Finishing the first part, she went on to calculate her Destiny Number.
Quote:

First Name = 8
Middle Name = 11 (Master Number)
Last Name = 4
8 + (1+1) + 4
8+2+4
14 = 1+4
5
Ariana stopped writing and frowned. Raising her hand she looked up sheepsihly and asked, "Um Professor? I think I did this wrong. My middle name comes up as a master number so I'm not sure if I did the calculation correctly or no." She said looking sheepish. Professor Shackleton leaned over Ariana's shoulder, checking her work. She then replied, "No, you've done it correctly. It is certainly a Master number for your middle name. Last term we spent more time going over the meaning for each part of the name, but for the purposes of this term, you do not need to refer to the textbook to see what it says about your middle name. Nice work!" Macadrian smiled as she stood up and began recirculating around the room.

| Shoe!Girl │ Rebel Ravie │ Confundus Queen │ RP Addict Rhiannon quickly did the calculations for the last two core numbers: Quote:
(9+1+6) + (5+9+1+5) + 6
(1+6) + (2+0) + 6
7+2+6
1+5
Soul Urge number = 6
Looking up the answer in the text, she reads: Quote:
Three things most important to you are beauty, harmony, and home. Understanding, loyalty, devotion, affection and commitment are top priorities. You want to protect, nurture, and love your family and home. In matters of the heart and friendship, you are the idealistic romantic and friend. In love, you want to be committed and love deeply. In friendship, you want lifelong companionship and confidences.
She does the calculations quickly for the last number, and then looks up it's meaning. Quote:

Often viewed as interfering in family matters and possessing idealized notions of romance and marriage, making it challenging to find a "perfect" mate.

Saylie grinned, "Alright, Ravenclaw!" she whispered. "Thanks Professor." She said outloud, still smiling.

| The REAL Sorting Hat: "Ravenclaw!" This monkey is bananas. "Thank you professor." She replied, smiling a bit and watching as she left to go help the other students. Knowing she was on the right track she set off to finish the other core numbers, even though she had already finished them before. Quote: Soul Number:
Vowels:-----------------1--9-1----1------9----- 9-5-1---------1-----9 6
Full name:--------------A-r-i-a-n-a---- S-i-b-l-i-e-a-n---- C-a-s-t-i-o-r
Consanants:--------------9----5---1---5-3------5 3---1-2---9
(1+9+1+1) + (9+9+5+1) + (1+9+6)
12) + (24) + (16)
(1+2) + (2+4) + (1+6)
3+6+7 = 16
1+6 = 7
Looking up the number in her textbook she wrote: SEVEN (7): You are an emotional hermit and rarely show your feelings. You may even prefer your own thoughts to the company of another. You prefer solitude, the lure of silence, and peace. In matters of the heart and friendship, your thoughts will probably be kept secret, as will your beliefs and eccentric lifestyle. You pair best with another 7 soul - another sensitive person, often in possession of highly developed skills of perception. Quote:
Vowels:-----------------1--9-1----1------9----- 9-5-1---------1-----9 6
Full name:--------------A-r-i-a-n-a---- S-i-b-l-i-e-a-n---- C-a-s-t-i-o-r
Consanants:--------------9----5--- 1---5-3------5 3---1-2---9
(9+5) + (1+5+3+5) (3+1+2+9)
(14) + (14) + (15)
(1+4) + (1+4)+(1+5)
5+5+6 = 16
1+6=7
Upon getting the same answer as the previous terms she was satisfied and wrote the meaning: SEVEN (7): Mysterious with an air of secrecy; seems absorbed in thought; astute and discerning; intelligent; dignified and reserved; aloof; dresses with refined taste; well-dressed and well-groomed; loves antiques; introspective; eccentric tastes; difficult to get close to at first; metaphysical and philosophical; very private. You can appear to others as negative, skeptical, and cynical - and so some might believe you are hard to live with. You withdraw easily and can be understood as emotional unavailability. People will mistake your withdrawal for lack of interest.
With this part of the lesson finished, she wrote down her answers in her journal again noting thaat in 4 years of taking this course she still had the same numbers and waitted for the lesson to end. She felt she had finally begun to understand the complexity of Arthimancy and was looking forward to the lext lesson.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Sloane W. Fordyce First Year | Cheesy Mac Professor Shackleton made her way to the front of the classroom, where she turned to face her students and explained, "Alrightie folks, we've covered everything we needed to cover for today. Congratulations to all those who earned points for their houses. There will be plenty more opportunities to earn points in my class if you come prepared for the lesson and prepared to work.
"Now, I'm not assigning any homework for this session because it was just a review, but I urge you very very strongly to be VERY familiar with all the areas we touched upon today. You will struggle to understand any of the later concepts if you do not understand these because all the rest build off this foundation. That is, after all, why they are called the Core! So, good luck! Have fun! And I will hopefully see you all at the next Arithmancy session."

Hogwarts RPG Name: Brianna Lynn Bunch First Year | Saylie gathered up her belongings and put them in her bag. After tucking her quill in a side pocket she stood up, hooking the bag on her shoulder. As she was standing, she remembered that she had a question. Making her way to the front of the class, she walked over to where Professor Shackleton was standing. She waited patiently, not wanting to interrupt the professor as the class was leaving.

She assumed it was going to have to do with the scene earlier in her office and she hoped she'd actually be able to answer her questions.

Apedemak huridly scrawled the last of his calculations, still not certain if was pleased with the results. Quote:

-7-4-4-2
Life Number: 1
(3) + (2) + (2 + 0 + 4 + 8)
3 + 2 + (14)

Your strong pioneering spirit, courage, and determination will serve you well along this road.
-Destiny: 11/2
1 + 7 + 5 + 4 + 5 + 4 + 1 + 2 = 29
2 + 9 = 11
1 + 1 = 2
ELEVEN (11/2): Your special mission in life is to inspire and elevate. Your purpose, as an old soul, is to live up to and accept your destiny, and to recognize that your originality and discerning skills are to be used for the good of humanity. Your job is to rehabilitate, augment, and transform others' lives. Learning to express your teaching ability, rising to the challenge, and stepping into the spotlight will provide opportunity to embrace your destiny. You're destined for inspired leadership. Live up to the demands of devotional living and you shall be the leader your were born to be.
-Heart’s Desire/Soul Urge Number: 3
1 + 5 + 5 + 1 = 12
1 + 2 = 3
THREE (3): Your deepest desire is to make people happy, to create enthusiasm, to laugh, and to encourage all to strive to be their best. You love life and enjoy using your creative talents. In matters of the heart and friendship, you may change your mind often because you just want to have fun! You often trip over your own enthusiasm, being overtly flirtatious or friendly.
-Personality: 8
7 + 4 + 4 + 2 = 17
1+7 = 8
EIGHT (8): Dresses for success; appears influential and powerful; driven; emanates strength; appears larger than life; appears authoritative; wears expensive clothing and accessories; can be controlling; business-minded; organized; visionary; knows how to delegate; intelligent; competent; assertive; natural maturity; well-balanced; traditional; good judge of character. With you air of authority, you may come across as cold, formal, tactless, and authoritarian - as someone who wants to control others. A last thought entered his mind as he went over his calculations one last time, and he jotted it down quickly before backing up. Quote: Note: Arithamancy strikes me as a form of divination that pretends to be an exact science through the use of letters and numbers in an objective fashion to divine subjective results.
Question: If Arithamancy is confused about itself, why should we pay any attention? |
