It was rapidly approaching the end of the term as the month of April was on the brink of wrapping up. This also would explain why Professors Khanna and Paton had opted to keep their joint activity on this fine, cloudless day as they both would have held refreshers earlier in the term that would be helpful today. Hopefully the students would have taken these refreshers seriously.

Looking around you will notice a few key aspects of today’s activity which seems to consist of a mini obstacle course. Firstly, there is a shallow pond. The murky water that filled said pond was eerily still. Was there anything lurking beneath? Secondly there's an open field that consists of a short tunnel to crawl through, a teeter totter to climb over and several large tires to hop from one foot to the other across. That seems really simple though, could there be something more to it then just making it across the course? Next, there is a locked trunk which happens to rattle and shake ominously at intervals. Finally, there's what looks like the average mini Quidditch pitch. Listen closely, there's something whizzing about the pitch for sure.

Professors Khanna and Paton are both there standing a few feet away from the course, ready to greet you. So gather around! You’ll be provided with all the necessary information soon enough.

Brandon had been in a poor mood for most of the term, but he had improved with the weather: today he was bright, rested, and smiling more than usual. "Hi, Professor Khanna and Professor Paton," he said cheerfully, coming to a stop next to them. "I'm excited for this activity!"

He surveyed the area: a pond, an obstacle course, a locked trunk, and a mini quidditch pitch. It didn't SEEM hard, but the fact that this activity involved the CoMC and DADA professors put Brandon in an alert state. There would probably be creatures and some sort of self-defense...

He just wished he knew what the course entailed, though. That water looked pretty suspicious. His eyes especially lingered on the locked, shaking trunk, and he turned towards Professor Khanna with a stressed look. That isn't what I think it is, right? Please don't be a boggart. He wasn't good with those...

When she had seen the notice go up for the joint DADA and Magical Creatures activity, Nadia just knew it was going to be fun. Her aunt didn’t disappoint for one and it was outdoors in this brilliant weather. Following the dress code on the notice and having more than enough of a positive attitude, the Gryffindor made her way down to the grounds as the appointed time drew close. Her dark eyes already flittering around to take in her surroundings as soon as thinge were visible to her from her pathway towards them.

“Good afternoon Professors.” She greeted each with a polite smile as she came to rest near Brandon the first to arrive it seemed. “Hey” she greeted the boy. At least it appeared her companion was in a better mood than previous interactions with the Hufflepuff. Maybe it was all the good weather, a change from the usual Scottish winter.

Hope was glad to have another class outdoors, especially on such a fine day. And she loved her Care of Magical Creatures class. She wasn't so excited about the prospect of a combined class with Defense Against the Dark Arts, though. Hope didn't really care for the DADA class--just ordinary life seemed dangerous enough, she didn't like thinking about all the more deadly things lurking out in the world. And from the looks of her surroundings as she got to the designated area, there were probably more than a few things lurking out here.

"Hello, Professor Khanna; hello, Professor Paton. Thank-you for getting us outside today," she greeted the teachers as she came closer.

Maria had a big bright smile on her face as she headed outside for the joint DADA and CoMC activity in the nice warm weather, wearing the asked for attire. As she neared the gathering point Maria's excitement grew as she took in the mini obstacle course which seemed to require both thinking, spell casting, and physical movement if the obstacles were anything to go by. Smiling brightly she beamed in greeting as she stopped by her peers and professors "Hello Professor's Khanna and Paton! The obstacle course looks really fun!" Turning to her peers she greeted with equal brightness. "Hi Hope, Nadia and Brandon!" Now the only person's she were missing was Kion and Vera, and the activity would get even more fun

Desiree was more than a little curious about this activity. The notice hadn’t given much away, other than the instruction to dress comfortably. If there was one thing she’d learned in nearly seven terms at Hogwarts, it was that “comfortable clothes” was professor code for “wet and/or messy activity”. She came prepared in her usual messy activity outfit: pink coveralls and matching sneakers, with her hair up and stuffed into a waterproof hat.

The first thing she noticed was the nice cloudless weather for today’s activity. The second thing was the obstacle course. Her bright blue eyes scanned the course from beginning to end. Okay, tunnel, teeter totter, tires… that all looked doable. Then she noticed the rattling trunk and - was that whizzing she heard near the mini quidditch pitch? She wasn’t too fussed about either. Whatever was making those noises, she felt reasonably confident she could tame or fight it, whichever the professors’ instructions called for. Frankly, she was more concerned about that pond. Although it looked still now, she half-expected something to reach out and drag her down the moment she stepped into it, and looking like a drowned rat was not on her to-do list today!

Desiree smiled, waving to each of the professors in turn. “Hello, Professor Khanna, Professor Paton,” she greeted. Still eyeing the pond, she stood with the other students. “Hi, Brandon. Hi, Nadia. Hi, Hope. Hi, Maria,” she greeted with plenty of smiles and waves to go around.

Kion was pretty excited about the obstacle course, while he didn't say much until arriving as his hand was locked with Maria's. "Hello Professor Khanna and Professor Paton," Before greeting Brandon, Nadia, Hope, Desiree and the rest of his classmates as well with a hello and wave.

"What do you think is in that trunk?" He whispered to Maria. Maybe a boggart? Well, the mystery was adding to the excitement.

There came the first student. Dhruv surveyed Brandon’s face and quickly came to the conclusion that the young Hufflepuff was in a better frame of mind today. “Hallo, Mr. Fox. There’s nothing in this course that you wouldn’t be able to handle.” Were they always encouraging Brandon? Yes. They had done that all term and will continue to do so. “Ah, hello, Ms. Atreyu-Rehman. Good to have you here.” The Atreyu-Rehman kids were notoriously good when it came to creatures; knowing the family, he suspected Nadia and Aryan would master the course. “You’re welcome, Ms. Archard. Hello to you as well.” Yes, Dhruv knew that many students appreciated being outdoors on these glorious days; they did too. Aside from the course being suited for the grounds, it was a reason they were all grouped out here, that is. “Hi there, Ms. Dolph. Oh, it’s a fun one but it requires a lot of focus.” Dhruv gave the Hufflepuff a knowing grin. “Hello, Ms. Marchand. Great to see you here.” They would not drag up the fact that this activity was one of her last here at Hogwarts. "Hi there, Mr. Ingebretson." The Gryffindor received a smile.

“I think it’s about time we get started,’’ the DADA professor remarked softly to Hady. Since they both had already worked out which of them would offer up the introduction to the course, Dhruv cleared his throat.

“Welcome to my and Professor Paton’s joint activity! As you can see, we’ve put together a small obstacle course, small because there are only four obstacles to defeat.” Dhruv adjusted the pair of sunglasses perched on the bridge of their nose. “As you approach each new setting, the obstacle will present itself to you. You are to use your knowledge from what was taught to you during the term to make it past each. There is no allotted time in which you must complete the course, but please do keep in mind that there will be students after you who will have to have their turn. Professor Paton and I ask that you do your best today; it does not matter if you are, for some reason, unable to complete the course. Your best is enough.” Their face lit up with a warm smile. “Now, if you will form a line - no jostling. This is the order in which you will run the course. Simply give the student ahead of you five minutes before you take your turn; this will give them a head start. Not to worry though, Professor Paton and I will let you know when you can get started.” This way, the student would not have to keep track of the time and the Professors can direct the students steadily along.

“Professor Paton?” Yes, she had words of encouragement too, and probably any instruction that they may have missed.

OOC: Heya, guys! Thanks for posting! Regarding the activity, the obstacles are as follows: 1. A Kappa 2. A Moke 3. A Boggart 4. A Golden Snidget.
With the exception of the Snidget, please do NOT role play for any of the other obstacles as Ally & I will be responding to your posts accordingly. You do not have to wait for either of us yo give your characters the go ahead to get started; simply pretend that Dhruv or Hady did so!

Hope got more and more nervous as she waited her turn. When it came, she stepped very slowly up towards the shallow pool with the oh-so-murky water, took a big swallow, and waited.

Brandon always appreciated Professor Khanna's support, reassurance, and guidance. However, he wasn't the most convinced that there wasn't anything he couldn't handle. There were LOTS of things that he couldn't handle. He couldn't even fight an inanimate object, so he didn't have the most confidence in his DADA skills.

Brandon shifted from foot to foot and listened to the instructions, feeling cheerful but a little uneasy at the same time. His favorite creatures were thestrals... abraxans... kneazles... nothing dangerous, like acromantulas or kappas or dark creatures or venomous snakes. But Professor Khanna said it was a small obstacle course, and also that he could do it, and he trusted them. So... he waited patiently for his turn.

When it was time, Brandon approached the murky water carefully, drawing his wand and picking up a small rock. He tossed the rock into the water to see what creatures may be in store. Did he have to walk THROUGH the water? Perhaps he could distract whatever was in the pool so he could run through really quickly. That... or deal with the challenge head-on (he preferred the first idea, honestly).

Maria waved to Desiree with a smile as the one year older girl joined their group. "Hi Desiree!" Then she turned her head and attention to her boyfriend; Kion as she gave their interlocked hands a little warm squeeze. "I bet there is a boggart in the trunk. What else is there that likes dark and confined places?" Maria took Professor Khanna's word of advice to heart. She would need to have her head on straight if she wanted to pass all the obstacles in the mini course. She did though think that balance and speed could be important factors too. When it was time line up after the intro she took her place in the line after Kion. She gave her boyfriend the 5 minute head start, and then she was off on the signal from Professor Khanna. As she approached the murky pond Maria took out her wand from it's holster, and waited for the eerily still water to come to life. They weren't supposed to walk out into the water to get to the next obstacle right?

Only a few feet away from Professor Khanna stood, Professor Paton, her hands clasped gently behind her back and a very warm welcoming smile gracing her lips.The students had begun to arrive much more quickly than Hady had expected this afternoon. Perhaps they were all as excited about the obstacle course as Dhruv's and she were! She could only hope so anyhow, each obstacle was put together with the students in mind. To challenge them but to also allow them to learn and grow while having fun, even if they weren't able to complete the course.

Paton kept her own greetings to a soft smile, nod rof her head, a wave of her hand of quiet 'hello' as the students joined them. It had already been decided previously that Dhruv's would get them started with the introduction on what was expected of today's activity. They did a spectacular job detailing what was expected of the students without giving out too much information. This was exactly what they wanted.

"Thank you, Professor Khanna. I don't have too much to add that wasn't already said perfectly. What I will say really quickly before you all get started is just remember that you all already know this stuff, keep calm, don't be afraid to experiment if something isn't working. And it's okay if you can't figure something out, we're only practicing today. This is for fun." There was no need for anyone to panic or stress themselves out today over this.

"Alright everyone, good luck. Professor Khanna and I are right here should you find yourselves completely stuck and in need of assistance." Not that she thought any of them would need any help at all. These obstacles weren't that difficult.

Still standing beside Hady while keeping a sharp eye out for any signs out trouble, Dhruv said to their colleague, “Off to a good start so far.” They fell into silence for a moment as the observation continued. “A few of them are thinking out of the box,’’ the DADA professor noted, strong approval in his voice. This was what it was all about: to prepare the students to use their initiative with the information taught to them for real life situations.

Hope did not have to wait long. A second after she waded into the pond, the Japanese water demon sprang from the waters. It stood there, seemingly leering at Hope. It was calculating the best time to spring at her. Surely her blood was as tasty as other humans?

How will hope defeat the kappa? Whatever the plan, she needed to move quickly! This beast would not take long to spring into action!

SPOILER!!: Brandon!

That was a smart move.

The kappa slowly emerged from the water. Its head bobbed above it though the rest of its body remained hidden. But the demon wasted no time, it began gliding towards Brandon, its body still hidden. At this rate, it didn’t matter if Brandon waded through the water or not; the kappa would catch a hold of him quite easily.

It didn’t matter whether you ventured into the pool or not. Either action will result in the kappa making an appearance, which it did as it had sensed human presence lurking closer. Beady eyes stared eerily at Maria and in the blink of an eye, it began heading for the Hufflepuff at rapid speed.

When the kappa started coming out of the water to get him, Brandon froze for a moment. What if he hurt the kappa? He didn't know how to summon a cucumber!! Was it unethical to hex it? What if it killed him and drank his blood? He didn't WANT it to kill him and drink his blood, but he still didn't want to injure it.

Brandon's fear of his own blood being stolen finally snapped him out of it. Feeling way more than a little afraid, he took a few steps back and waited for the kappa to emerge a little from the water. Then he took a deep bow, hoping the kappa would do the same. Please bow and spill the water out of your head so I don't have to hex you with violence. Because his wand was in his hand, ready to cast the knockback jinx if tricking it didn't work!! That would go against my personal code and I hate doing that ok. Pretty please spill the water out of your head without me hexing you?

What if the effect was the same? What if him bowing to the kappa somehow killed it or made it really hurt? He hoped the professors wouldn't put him in that situation. He hated hurting things, even blood-drinking scary demons that were trying to get him.

"Yikes!"Maria blurted out in surprise as a kappa surfaced in the murky pond water, and started to look very eerily at her with it's black beady eyes and she quickly looked away. "Protego!" she casted quickly. A defensive shield was always a good start, right?

Maria casted with a scream when the kappa was only 3 feet away from her, and looking eerily at her with it's eyes. Could locking it's feet make the kappa bend it's head to weaken it enough to let her pass?

Desiree returned Professor Khanna’s grin with one of her own, but she didn’t say anything more because the activity was starting. She listened to the directions carefully. Four obstacles? That sounded doable, although she still didn’t like that pond… which unfortunately was the first obstacle.

When her turn came, she stepped up to the edge of the pond, peering into the murky water. No way was she setting foot in that pond without knowing how deep it was or what was waiting inside! Whatever was in there, it would have to come to her first. She stood at the edge, watching, waiting with all the patience for which Hufflepuff was known. Come out, come out, wherever - and whatever - you are!

SPOILER!!: Brandon!

If Brandon would recall, there were two efficient methods to defeat the kappa, one of which did not involve cucumbers. One should not spend time worrying about the attacking beast’s wellbeing too much when one was about to be Kappa food.

Such was the intent of the Kappa on Brandon, such was its focus of savouring his blood that it failed to understand his intention. The Kappa halted a few paces from the Hufflepuff and it tilted its head way too far to the left. Out poured the water in its head, successfully weakening it.

Hurry on! It wouldn’t take long for the beat to regain its strength!

SPOILER!!: Maria!

The magic running through Kappas made them incredibly strong; this was also aided by its head full of water. Therefore, spells would not work against it just then. The lights aimed at it simply dispersed; the spells were useless.

Think again, young Hufflepuff!

Though the spells did distract the Kappa for a moment, they weren’t enough to keep it that way for long!

SPOILER!!: Desiree!

This student was a shrewd one.

The Kappa stayed still, waiting. It expected the potential victim to come wading through the water. When this did not happen, it slowly rose. The only sound that was made was the water that flowed from its body. It surveyed Desiree. Without hesitation, it began moving towards Desiree in steady steps.

Brandon wanted to LIVE and not be eaten, so he quickly ran past the kappa as soon as it lost its water and became weak. He spared it a look over his shoulder as soon as he had reached the second obstacle, glad to see that it was regaining its strength and he hadn't killed it. "Sorry!" He did feel terrible for the demon-creature, but he still had three intimidating tasks left to complete.

He got down on his knees and started crawling through the tunnel, or at least trying to. Hopefully there wasn't a dark creature that he had to fight in here! Personally, he was hoping for a fuzzy kneazle that he had to rescue. Or, even better, nothing at all.

Desiree stood perfectly still, her bright blue eyes locked on the water. She heard the water flowing before she saw it - a kappa rising out of the water. How was she going to defeat it? Thinking quickly, she recalled feeding cucumbers to a kappa in a past DADA lesson. That could buy her some time… the problem was she didn’t have a cucumber on her!

An idea suddenly occurred to her. She didn’t have a cucumber, but the school kitchen might. Summoning a cucumber from the castle might work. It was worth a try anyway! Envisioning a big green cucumber, she aimed her wand toward the castle. “Accio cucumber!” she cast, watching, hoping to see the desired object come sailing toward her any moment. If that didn’t work, she’d have to come up with a backup plan!

The Kappa paid his escaping victim no heed; it couldn’t because it was too busy trying to sink beneath the water in order to regain its strength. It was going to be fine though. However, the Kappa was ultimately going to be disappointed and angry when it was itself again; it hated when victims escaped.

That’s right! She was a witch and had a wand at her disposal.

The plan worked all right. The cucumber whacked the Kappa on the side of the head, startling the demon, in its haste to reach Desiree. Before the Kappa knew it, the cucumber was going to be in Desiree’s hands.

Hadleigh watched each student as they took on the very first task. The swamp. To say she was surprised at how some of them handled the situation would be a lie. She wasn't. This was a smart bunch. Not only did they know how to handle the creatures they were go come up against but they also knew how to think on their feet. Today's obstacle course was proving exactly what Professor Khanna and herself had wanted. That each and everyone one of their students were capable. All they had to do was believe in themselves. And when they did, they did great.

There was no dark creature to be fought within the tunnel that Brandon had started to crawl through. Nor was there a fuzzy creature to be rescued. What there was however was a ten inch long, silver green lizard blocking the end of the tunnel. Only one moment the lizard was there and the very next, it appeared to be.. gone! It had shrunk to nearly being so small it was impossible to see! What was this lizard and what could Brandon be meant to have to do with it?

Although Desiree was confident in her summoning charm casting abilities, she was already formulating a backup plan, just in case there were no cucumbers in the kitchen or she was too far away for her spell to work properly. How could she trick the Kappa into bowing if she had to?

Fortunately, she didn't have to. At that moment, she saw a cucumber coming toward her. Yay, her spell worked! She flinched slightly as the cucumber whacked the Kappa on its way to her. Ooh, sorry, Mr. (Or Miss) Kappa!

Desiree caught the cucumber in her free hand, wasting no time in inscribing her name on it. ”Scribere,” she cast, tracing her full name in red and yellow flame-like letters on the cucumber: Desiree Yvette Marchand. She still thought the pronunciation of that spell sounded funny, however many terms it had been since she learned it! ”Look! I've got a nice cucumber for you, she said, tossing the inscribed cucumber toward the Kappa.

Hope stood poised on the very edge of the pond, watching. Suddenly she saw what looked like a large monkey covered with scales spring up before her, with an ugly expression on its face (she could swear the thing was positively leering at her!) A Kappa!! Not expecting this, Hope had not taken the precaution of bringing a cucumber with her, so she did the next best thing. Solemnly (and trying not to show the panic she felt inside), she made an old-fashioned, formal bow to the thing.

Having backup plans was always a good idea; that sort of thinking would no doubt do Desiree well in the future. Unfortunately for Mr. Kappa, he did not have one of those. Recovering from its surprise, it was successfully distracted by the lovely, green cucumber being offered to it.

It was at this moment that he forgot completely about the student and lunged for the inscribed cucumber. Yes, yes. The human was safe as the Kappa began to devour the vegetable.

It was a Kappa alright!

The Kappa was not leering, however, it was staring as it calculated shrewdly how best to attack its victim. It could see she was not yet an adult human so maybe… maybe she was not so much knowledgeable on how to deal with its kind.

And so it slowly made its way towards her, still quite observing her for any unexpected moves. Oh, it quite ignored her bow.

Brandon liked lizards- or at least his boyfriend did. Brandon didn't have much experience with lizards, but he appreciated them. This was obviously not a normal lizard, though- it could shrink!!

He racked his brains to try and remember what the lizard was and what he was supposed to do with it. It could shrink down to tiny sizes... was it a moke? And what was he supposed to do with it? Certainly not turn it into a handbag... was this a sign for him to shrink himself? He was confused, because the shrinking creature didn't FEEL like an obstacle- it was literally shrinking out of his way. He hesitated, unsure about how to proceed.

After a moment, he attempted to proceed through the tunnel anyways. Surely the "obstacle" part of this lizard section would make itself clear when he tried to pass through, and then he would know better how to deal with it.
