SS: Seventh Year Symphonies

Joseph and Fynley, two seventh year Slytherins have had a ‘thing’ since the end of their fifth year after attending a music festival together. To the outsider they might not look like your typical couple but their connection and trust runs deeply, which was why as they attempted to breeze their way through their final year in education Joseph needs to open up to Fynley over the reasons behind his troubles.

This is a closed RP exploring the seventh year of Hogwarts students:

Fynley hadn’t explicitly told anyone where he would be but it wouldn’t take a genius to figure out, certainly not one who knew him as well as Joseph did. In fact it was actually Joseph who had shown him the way up in the first place and it had become sort of their spot for whenever Hogwarts was becoming just that bit overwhelming. Usually Fynn would be able to shake it all off, put on a brave face and show that nothing was fazing him but seventh year hadn’t been as easy breezy as he had hoped. The pressure WAS getting to him.

Still nothing that a breath of fresh air and the incredible view from the roof couldn’t fix. He had climbed his way up no trouble, the footholds and loose stones implanted in his brain to the point it became second nature to make the quick trek. The Slytherin was perched far away enough from the edge so that a simple mistake wouldn’t prove fatal but close enough that he felt just that tiny element of danger, enough to feel alive.

For the time being, whilst he listened to music on his EarPods and closed his eyes to concentrate on the constant rhythms drumming through the songs, he forgot all about the thoughts running through his head.

Despite looking as though he were the sort to grace the cover of Witch Weekly, Joseph walked the corridors feeling anything but easy and breezy. While the majority of his peers were moaning and groaning about NEWTs or what to do in their post Hogwarts world, the Slytherin continued to struggle sorting out what he would do from one day to the next. Or, at least, one appointment to the next. His grades remained solid for the subjects he cared about whereas the others feel by the wayside while he prioritized his time for the sake of his sanity. Literally.

Exhausted by his family and with another session with the Department of Mysteries on the horizon, the lanky blond was on the verge of complete mental depletion and siphoning on his emotional reserves to get by. It was time. I had been time for a while now but always some hurdle inserted itself disrespectfully in his path.

Not tonight... not tonight.

Acoustic guitar strapped to his back, far too many supplies required for his electric guitar and not enough space to set up on their ledge, Joseph relied on what little muscle mass he had and climbed his way to Songbird Perch.

"Hey," he grunted as he pulled himself up over the last stone and settled himself down beside his boyfriend, removing both his magically enhanced earpods while doing so. "What are you listening to?"

Although...if you have him a minute or two to catch his breath and he wouldn't need to ask that question.

“Dang, you found me” the Slytherin teased as the tall blonde appeared over the ledge to join him. His hand reached out to assist if it was needed, Joseph having made the climb more difficult by bringing his guitar with him but his long limbs seemed to be working well for himself. As his boyfriend came into full view settling beside him, the seventh year's eyes sort of lit up in the way that a Crup would if presented with a steak or a Kneazle with a ball of wool. A clear indication that his previous statement was entirely in jest and that Joseph’s company is and would always be appreciated.

He had switched off his music the minute he had spotted his locks but he quickly put it back on to offer the other EarPod over. “Something with a decent beat” Some Wizrock band whose name had completely escaped him but whose drum solos served as an inspiration for creating those of his own. Or at least they would have had Fynley actually graced the music room in the last month or so, his distractions coming from elsewhere this term and less focused on creating music. He figured that he’d have plenty of time for that over the summer anyway, he was relying on his job at Atticus’s to tide himself over whilst he figured out the adulting stuff.

“Are you planning on serenading me tonight?” The corner of his lips twitched up into a smirk as he looked at the more unusual choice of a guitar as far Joseph was concerned. “And people think I’m the sappy one?”

Fynley might’ve been a little less playful had he known the potential seriousness of the conversation but alas their relationship was built on this banter and he wasn’t about to stop now.

He nearly allowed what was purely playful banter turn snarky - nearly being the key word here as residual sentiments from previous exchanges were jeering at Joseph to turn feral. Rather frustrating that the techniques to manage such defences actually worked . He would send flowers or some tacky fruit basket with mini muffins to his Mysteries mentor and Professor Feirgrund whenever his sarcasm suffered his empathy for such a gesture to actually manifest.

And speaking of said sarcasm.

"You need to up your game to get to my level, obviously," he quipped with one last grunt swung his guitar over and on to his thighs. "You're no demiguise." Joseph gave the offered earpod a brief skeptical look before accepting it and swapping it out with his own for a brief listen. "At least your musical tastes are better than your hide-and-go-seek prowess." Clearing his throat a bit as he offered the earpod back to Fynley, his lips creased together like two severely dehydrated shrivelfigs. "Don't get too excited you sorted that out and think you ought to go run off and be an investigator or anything," he managed to smile upon rehydrating his lips with his tongue.

Just, well, not exactly the romantic serenade kind of evening.

It was a good thing then that Fynley was entirely used to any sarcasm and quick wit thrown in his direction and never truly took it to heart. It was also a positive that their relationship was sort of built on this playful friendship that turned into something more. Besides, Fynley was pretty thick skinned anyway and incredibly patient, nor would he particularly appreciate one of these fruit baskets Joseph sent his elders.

“You mean you’ve intentionally been hiding from me? And here I was thinking that you were just SO busy to afford your poor boyfriend any of your time” he replied dramatically, a subtle smirk gracing the corner of his lips as he clutched at his chest in mock pain before he dodged out of the path of the swinging guitar. “Good. It’d be no fun being invisible and I wouldn’t suit being gray either.” At least he assumed the creature he was thinking of was a Demiguise, he thankfully didn’t take Creatures as a subject and for good reason.

As for his musical tastes? It was arguable that their shared appreciation of a decent musical melody was what attracted them in the first place. “As if you had any doubt about that. I’m not the one singing Disney songs with fifth years” he chuckled.

The seventh year had become accustomed to perching on this specific ledge that he was able to completely relax and lean back up on his elbows. “Haven’t got the grades for that” he remarked casually. Didn’t have the grades for most things really but he was trying not to think about that too much. “I could light a campfire though, sing our Kumbaya or whatever it’s called..” His magical skills could actually stretch to Incendio.
