| | | Potions Laboratory The Potions Laboratory is a place of shadows and simmering light, its stone walls lined with shelves of jars containing dried herbs, curious powders, and various pickled things that float in viscous solutions. The air is thick with a mingling of scents from acrid smoke to sweet herbs to the faint metallic tang of scorched copper. A long central worktable bears the marks of years of brewing, scarred with stains that refuse to vanish despite repeated Scouring Charms ― let's just say it gives the table character.
Tucked into the back corner is a perpetually damp nook outfitted with enchanted scrub brushes and self-heating basins. The brushes here at the Cauldron Wash Station scrub and clatter of their own accord, sometimes overzealously... sometimes sluggishly, leaving most students reluctant to linger here but always satisfied with the cleanliness of their cauldrons. A glass fronted case gleams along the side wall, filled with rows of neatly labeled vials containing potions in every imaginable shade and viscosity. A few are used for study while others are locked with a complex rune seal and marked strictly for observation only. At the back of the room, a stone archway opens to a narrow annex enchanted to draw out smoke and noxious fumes. Though designed for safety, it has also become a favored escape for students needing fresh air — or the equivalent of it as found in the dungeons. Near the Ventilation Annex sits a long battered table where failed concoctions are emptied into neutralization cauldrons ― Professor Cox does not approve of Vanishing Spells. The mixtures inside bubbles ceaselessly and give off unpleasant ever-changing stenches that seems to cling to anyone who loiters around any of the cauldrons for too long. Ever wondered what the antithesis of Amortentia may smell like? You've likely found it here.
Professor Cox holds his Potions office hours here when classes are not in session. Students may approach him here for consultation on coursework, brewing difficulties, or research proposals. Please be mindful not to interrupt if he is overseeing an experiment already in progress ― he will acknowledge you when it is safe to do so. If he is not present, do not wander the dungeons in search of him. Instead, trace the Lagaz run upon the enchanted rune plate affixed to the wall near the Cauldron Wash Station with the tip of your wand and he will be alerted to your presence. If urgency warrants, the professor will return through his private passageway... though otherwise expect a reply delivered in writing at a later time.
Professor Cox is also not responsible for the fate of any lost pet that may or may not be harvested for ingredients, so do ensure that yours does not just-so-happen to get lost in here.

Collin O'Shea Owl Post | Ariannnnnnnnaaaaaaa Sardines ♥ // Nomsy, yo ❄ rolling in the ink ❄ It should be a surprise to exactly no one that knew her that Cat found herself in the potions laboratory during her free time shortly after the term started. There were several reasons for it (not least of which was the fact that she had missed it, okay?). The reason she was giving herself was quite simple: she had used the last of her Craterotomy Potion store over the summer and she was not looking forward to acne returning.
So, here she was with her potions kit and textbook, prepared to spend the next few quiet hours here. Alone. Brewing potions. Just as she preferred.
She took her time setting up her space, making sure everything was clean and in order before starting to gather the needed ingredients. She fell into a rhythm easily, going about her movements through the laboratory like it was her second home. And, really, that's what it felt like. This place and the library felt as comfortable to her as the Ravenclaw common room did, and she probably spent more time in the first two than in the latter over the past three years. Why should she start off this term any different?

This place and the library felt as comfortable to her as the Ravenclaw common room did, and she probably spent more time in the first two than in the latter over the past three years. Why should she start off this term any different? This castle is an impossible maze. Poorly designed. Architecturally absurd. Dark, dingy, and DAMP.
It was this last thing that bothered Asena the most. The castle's humidity was already doing a number on her hair and it would only be a matter of time before it affected her skin too - something that she took immense pride in. Hell would freeze over before Asena Kaplan let Scotland ruin her skin. As such, she planned on taking matters into her own hands. Her Kaplan Co. serum, while truly a miracle product, wasn't a preventative solution. Not yet, anyway. With some tinkering in the potions lab, surely she could find a way to enhance its--
Oh.
She wasn't alone.
Asena wore a look of surprise as the door closed behind her. Bit loud, they should fix that. "Hello." She didn't recognize the girl from "the Feast" (misleading, disgusting food) which meant she was not a first year, transfer student, or Hufflepuff. "Mind if I join you?" She was asking to be polite, but did not plan to turn around no matter the answer, fyi. This was dire.

Collin O'Shea Owl Post | Sardines ♥ // Nomsy, yo ❄ rolling in the ink ❄ Her space was set. Her ingredients and other necessary items were spaced in the correct order; the sequence she’d need to use them throughout the potion brewing process. The fire was lit, and the water was heating.
Nothing made Cat feel so in her element as this. Studying made her lose time, sure, but more in a “get sucked in without a life vest” sort of situation. It was in potion-making only that she felt she was floating rather than treading water and hoping for the best outcome.
She liked to float.
The loud click of the door was enough to get her attention, though. Cat jumped slightly at the sound, turning immediately to see who - or what, even - had joined her in the room. It was… just a girl.
Cat eyed her for a moment, trying to determine if she knew her. She quickly decided that she did not.
She gave a half-shrug with one shoulder. “It’s open to any student, so, it wouldn’t really matter if I did,” her tone was good-natured, friendly even. “But thanks for asking.” And, because she couldn’t help herself, she continued, “What are you working on?”

| doesn't proofread tweets | #wrongaboutcereal | #siriusly? | emo to the extremo Asena offered a polite smile, not overly exuberant, but friendly enough to suffice as well mannered. "I am altering something for my skin," she admitted as she set her things down. She hadn't planned to be forthcoming, but the question hit a nerve and triggered a shift in her features that let way into some of her building frustrations with this place. "The humidity is unbelievable." It was humid in Istanbul too, but this was somehow different - it seeped through the castle walls and her hair was suffering the biggest hit. This was something she would have to deal with later. "Terrible for the skin." Her expertise, so. She would know.
Enough about her, "What are you brewing?" She surveyed the neat array of ingredients, already forming a guess, but choosing to ask anyway as she set out her own cauldron. Asena was impressed, tbh. From her initial assessment of the student body, she noticed a certain lack of ... let's call it, haste. Hogwarts struck her as a place of very little rigor, so it was refreshing to see someone else taking matters into their own hands. Why wait for a potions lesson to get started for the term? "I'm Asena, by the way." Vital info.

Collin O'Shea Owl Post | Sardines ♥ // Nomsy, yo ❄ rolling in the ink ❄ Something for her skin. Altering. Cat was immediately intrigued. She’d recently started considering options for changing or altering potions herself; which ingredients would change which properties, or even how she may create potions that didn’t exist.
She hadn’t tried anything yet. She wasn’t quite brave enough. “The humidity is terrible,” she agreed easily. “You’ll probably get used to it. I’m guessing you’re new here?”
She paused to check on her water temperature and fire before answering the girl’s question. “A craterotomy potion. For- um- acne. Ya know.” She wasn’t sure if that was the same sort of thing the other girl was working on, or if they had different skin focuses, but there was a slight uncomfortable hitch of embarrassment in her stomach with the admission. Even though, like, all teenagers had acne. The potion was so Cat didn’t have to deal with it. That was the whole point. “Asena,” she repeated with a nod, committing her name and face to memory. “I’m Cat. Fourth year Ravenclaw.”

| doesn't proofread tweets | #wrongaboutcereal | #siriusly? | emo to the extremo Used to it? This was not what Asena wanted to hear. The girl could have said anything else and Asena would have accepted it. 'It's only like this the first half of the school year,' fine, what's four months anyway? 'They're making adjustments to the insulation,' okay, she could put up with a temporary inconvenience if it led to a long-term solution. 'If you submit a formal complaint, the caretaker will work on it,' not an immediate fix, but she could rally others to stuff the box for urgency's sake. But 'you'll probably get used to it,' what was she meant to do with that????? "Yes, I am," she answered, ultimately accepting the defeat with a renewed determination to create something of her own. "Does it always rain so much?" It was a miracle this entire country wasn't severely Vitamin D deficient. Or depressed.
But what the girl said next gave Asena complete pause. Everything else up until this point was suddenly irrelevant. "You cannot do that to your skin!"
She shook her head. Theatrically. With. Vigor.
This time, Asena spoke far more expressively, her hands coming alive in a dramatic, horrified gesture as her Turkish accent sharpened with absolute urgency. Hello??? She knew what she was talking about! "Craterotomy potions are terrible for you." Not immediately, of course. They certainly accomplished what they were designed to do on the surface, but— "They're harsh. They strip the moisture barrier completely and you will pay for it tenfold over time." You would have to start supplementing with a zillion other products just to undo the damage, and half of those would likely cause adverse flare-ups anyway. No, no, no. This was a tragedy in the making, and Asena Kaplan simply could not stand by and let a fellow teenager destroy her skin in the name of a quick fix and desperation.
Without missing a beat, Asena reached into the pocket of her bag and pulled out a small, exquisite glass bottle with a heavy gold cap - stamped with the unmistakable, elegant crest of Kaplan Co. "Put the cauldron away." She set the bottle down on the table between them with the absolute authority of a lead dermatology healer. "You are going to use this instead. It is a pure hydration serum - it's formulated to balance oil production without stripping your skin's natural barrier. Neutralize blemishes overnight without drying your skin. Two drops, morning and night." She'd feel the difference immediately. Potions stung. The serum felt like cold spring water. It was her holy grail.
She gave a decisive nod, crossing her arms over her chest as she finally processed the girl's introduction. "It's a pleasure." Cat, Asena thought, slightly bewildered. Do they name people after animals here?

| *whistles* astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf There was, unfortunately, a limit to how long Professor Cox could pretend not to be listening when his own subject was being discussed within earshot. It was just unfortunate that his sudden appearance from the Ventilation Annex would count as a jumpscare.
"I am not certain what you were expecting from a country where the local atmosphere regards petrichor as a permanent decorative feature," he noted dryly as he came into view. "If you were hoping for a tropical luau, Miss Kaplan, I fear Hogwarts will continue to disappoint you."
He approached the pair with his usual measured stride, midnight blue robes falling neatly around him, expression settling into something between resignation and mild academic interest. Cox gaze shifted toward the small bottle of serum now occupying the space between them and regarded it for a moment before his hazel-green eyes shifted to the Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff.
"Craterotomy potion," he repeated dryly, gaze glancing back and forth between the girls... lingering on Miss Webb for a fraction longer. "How reassuring. I had been concerned that the afternoon might pass without anyone attempting to chemically dissolve their own epidermis."
Miss Webb had been a complicated student. She had, however, possessed a remarkable talent for finding herself adjacent to situations that required considerably more of a guiding hand. His niece and nephew had mentioned her often enough over the years that Cox had, on occasion, found himself tucking aside any muttered admonishments about ink for good.
Still, she was a Ravenclaw. And, more importantly, she was one of his Ravenclaws.
His gaze returned to the serum. For all his academic pursuits and interests in potions, skincare had never featured particularly high on Cox's list of personal necessities. Sunscreen had been about the extent of his routine, and even that was more a matter of practical preservation than vanity. The result was apparent enough in his hands and features: coarse skin, weathered lines, and the faint, uneven texture of someone who had spent rather too much time being battered by sandstorms.
The bottle tea rose lotion he had received once upon a time had reminded sealed, now nothing more than a ghost that haunted the shelves in his office.
"Whether you use the potion or not, Miss Webb, I would prefer you finishing your brewing process rather than waste ingredients. Unless you wish to transform that into something else now that Miss Kaplan has, allegedly, provided you with a superior alternative."

Collin O'Shea Owl Post | Sardines ♥ // Nomsy, yo ❄ rolling in the ink ❄ “It does,” Cat answered simply, starting to move toward her potions ingredients in preparation for the next step of the potion.[b] “Where are you-”[b] but she couldn’t finish her sentence, because Asena had apparently been suprised by Cat’s intended potion.
…suprised, or personally offended.
Cat turned to the other girl with wide-eyes, too startled by the admonishment to respond appropriately. She was just along for the ride at this point, the analytical part of her brain taking in all the information while the other part simply looked.
Moisture barrier. Hydration serum. Balance oil production. Neutralize blemishes.
Cat could only nod and pick up the small bottle, noticing the unique stamp, before they were joined by another figure.
She really should expect it in his own laboratory. But something about her favorite professor and Head of House walking into the room while she was being lectured about skincare made Cat feel like she wanted to jump into the cauldron currently simmering next to her rather than put it away.
She rubbed her forehead, wondering briefly how she continued to end up in situations like this.
And before she became aware enough to stop, she heard herself muttering, “Nothing in the textbook mentioned anything about dissolving epidermises.” Epidermi? Epidermes? Anyway. She glanced at the cauldron again, then at the array of ingredients neatly arranged next to it. Her brain whirled through the process she’d managed thus far, then began making its way through her memory of other brews that she could possibly pivot to without too much hassle and/or disaster.
Luckily, she wasn't that far along. Asena's distraction had kept her from adding in any ingredients at all. She could put everything back. Start over. Sure, why not. “I suppose I’ll transform it to something more useful,” she decided with the barest of a look toward Professor Cox to catch any nonverbal reaction to her decision.

| apologies for her stage left exit doesn't proofread tweets | #wrongaboutcereal | #siriusly? | emo to the extremo A grumpy Potions professor eavesdropping on teenage girls from an annex? Please. Frankly, a tired trope. Did Professor Cox have nothing better to do with his afternoon than slink around the laboratory and belittle students for caring about something beyond his own ‘subject matter expertise’? It was sad. And his weird response to her private conversation:? Tropical luau? He was clearly trying to make her feel stupid and it was uncalled for.
Pick on someone your own age, creep.
But ever well mannered, Asena tilted her head as she took in his weathered features, coarse hands, a clear lack of SPF discipline. A man who has never touched a bottle of hyaluronic acid in his life. It’s such a shame when the male ego gets in the way of taking care of oneself. Hm. “Tropical, no,” she shook her head, brows knitted together in confusion. “I guess I just expected different architectural standards, though the rustic vibe is charming.” She kept her features schooled - gentle and polite, though her thoughts were scathing.
And while Asena wasn’t one to back down from a verbal sparing match, she knew when to pick her battles and she was entirely unwilling to find herself facing any sort of disciplinary action within her first month here. Though she did notice Cat’s own shift. Sensing some embarrassment, she turned to her almost apologetically. “You're welcome,” she said softly before nodding towards the bottle sitting between them. “Two drops. Morning and night.”
But knowing herself, and knowing that if she stayed in this place for another sixty seconds, her tongue would likely betray her sense of self control, Asena began packing away her unused cauldron. “If you will excuse me, Professor,” she looked at him for a moment, feature still soft, and back to Cat before making her exit toward the door. “I have a damp castle to conquer. Good luck with your potion, Cat. I’ll find you later to see how it went.”
Without waiting for a reply, she turned on her heels and stepped out into the corridor.
Merlin. What an absolute nightmare of a man. The suddenness of his appearance. Looming overhead. It had sent a familiar, unwelcome prickle of tension down her spine. Boys, men, they were all the same. They wanted control of the narrative. And she'd spent the last year learning the hard way what happened when you let them.
