It was just unfortunate that his sudden appearance from the Ventilation Annex would count as a jumpscare.
"I am not certain what you were expecting from a country where the local atmosphere regards petrichor as a permanent decorative feature," he noted dryly as he came into view. "If you were hoping for a tropical luau, Miss Kaplan, I fear Hogwarts will continue to disappoint you."
He approached the pair with his usual measured stride, midnight blue robes falling neatly around him, expression settling into something between resignation and mild academic interest. Cox gaze shifted toward the small bottle of serum now occupying the space between them and regarded it for a moment before his hazel-green eyes shifted to the Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff.
"Craterotomy potion," he repeated dryly, gaze glancing back and forth between the girls... lingering on Miss Webb for a fraction longer. "How reassuring. I had been concerned that the afternoon might pass without anyone attempting to chemically dissolve their own epidermis."
Miss Webb had been a complicated student. She had, however, possessed a remarkable talent for finding herself adjacent to situations that required considerably more of a guiding hand. His niece and nephew had mentioned her often enough over the years that Cox had, on occasion, found himself tucking aside any muttered admonishments about ink for good.
Still, she was a Ravenclaw. And, more importantly, she was one of his Ravenclaws.
His gaze returned to the serum. For all his academic pursuits and interests in potions, skincare had never featured particularly high on Cox's list of personal necessities. Sunscreen had been about the extent of his routine, and even that was more a matter of practical preservation than vanity. The result was apparent enough in his hands and features: coarse skin, weathered lines, and the faint, uneven texture of someone who had spent rather too much time being battered by sandstorms.
The bottle tea rose lotion he had received once upon a time had reminded sealed, now nothing more than a ghost that haunted the shelves in his office.
"Whether you use the potion or not, Miss Webb, I would prefer you finishing your brewing process rather than waste ingredients. Unless you wish to transform that into something else now that Miss Kaplan has, allegedly, provided you with a superior alternative."
