Post J.K. Rowling supports Labour in opinion piece for The Times

J.K. Rowling has written an opinion piece for The Times in support of Labour (the current government) for the upcoming UK general election, which takes place on May 6th. The editorial focuses on her experience as a single mother and how she benefited from Labour welfare initiatives, while also tackling how unwed mothers are demonised by society and are often misrepresented in the media. Finally, she looks at the Conservative manifesto, casting a critical eye over the pledges to reward those who are married.

Women like me (for it is a curious fact that lone male parents are generally portrayed as heroes, whereas women left holding the baby are vilified) were, according to popular myth, a prime cause of social breakdown, and in it for all we could get: free money, state-funded accommodation, an easy life.

An easy life. Between 1993 and 1997 I did the job of two parents, qualified and then worked as a secondary school teacher, wrote one and a half novels and did the planning for a further five. For a while, I was clinically depressed. To be told, over and over again, that I was feckless, lazy — even immoral — did not help.

Here are just a few of the facts that sometimes get lost on the way to an easy story, or a glib stump speech: only 13 per cent of single parents are under 25 years old, the average age being 36. Fifty-two per cent live below the breadline and 26 per cent in “non-decent” housing. Single-parent families are more likely than couple families to have a member with a disability, which gives some idea of the strains that cause family break up. In spite of all the obstacles, 56.3 per cent of lone parents are in paid employment.

I took care not to quote anything that was strongly political.

I think what's really at the heart of this is that they (cast and crew) all seem to come from the same point of view.

We're not advocating, we're just reporting.
I still say no political opinions of any kind, no matter where they come from, should be posted on this website. And I've said it twice already, stop posting them, and then you wouldn't feel the need to warn readers about getting into political debates.

Then you mention they all seem to come from the same point of view, which makes those of us who don't feel just a tad ostracized, and makes the makeup of the Potterverse seem very homogenized. If a cast or crew member were to come out and say they were a Thatcherite, or a supporter of Sinn Fein or the UK Independence Party, Plaid Cymru or the British National Party, would they be accorded the same opportunity to have their views posted on this website?

^ The answer to your question is yes. The fact that they haven't and don't, isn't our fault.

I'm not faulting anyone, and how could you know some of them don't hold views diametrically opposed to what appears to be the "norm" for the main cast and other Potter family members? Maybe they don't feel it's their place to speak them. Maybe they feel that their views are theirs alone, and not for general consumption. Gary Oldman is a Conservative, but he doesn't crow his political beliefs at every shot.

On another note....I said I'd give Matt Smith at least two episodes, but I couldn't make it through the first half hour...he's horrid! And Amy Pond looks like she was brought over from Torchwood to spice things up! :gollum2:
