Post J.K. Rowling supports Labour in opinion piece for The Times

J.K. Rowling has written an opinion piece for The Times in support of Labour (the current government) for the upcoming UK general election, which takes place on May 6th. The editorial focuses on her experience as a single mother and how she benefited from Labour welfare initiatives, while also tackling how unwed mothers are demonised by society and are often misrepresented in the media. Finally, she looks at the Conservative manifesto, casting a critical eye over the pledges to reward those who are married.

Quote:
Women like me (for it is a curious fact that lone male parents are generally portrayed as heroes, whereas women left holding the baby are vilified) were, according to popular myth, a prime cause of social breakdown, and in it for all we could get: free money, state-funded accommodation, an easy life.

An easy life. Between 1993 and 1997 I did the job of two parents, qualified and then worked as a secondary school teacher, wrote one and a half novels and did the planning for a further five. For a while, I was clinically depressed. To be told, over and over again, that I was feckless, lazy — even immoral — did not help.
Quote:
Here are just a few of the facts that sometimes get lost on the way to an easy story, or a glib stump speech: only 13 per cent of single parents are under 25 years old, the average age being 36. Fifty-two per cent live below the breadline and 26 per cent in “non-decent” housing. Single-parent families are more likely than couple families to have a member with a disability, which gives some idea of the strains that cause family break up. In spite of all the obstacles, 56.3 per cent of lone parents are in paid employment.

This I think touches all points and it is great that JK is using her own experiences to give some justice to the women who have to sacrifice so much to protect their young. Personally, I've been through that but I'm not getting into details, thankfully my situation got the way it got for the better and my father is a great person. Many families however get out of one problem to get into another. It indeed does have an everlasting effect and you can see that in JK's writing. I'm so glad she's touched upon this, many just don't care.

This article was brilliantly written. I'm not British, so I'm not up to date on UK politics, but I agree with JKR. No child should have to live in poverty. It makes no sense for a single mother to only be able to get a tax break if she's married. That needs to be changed ASAP. I grew up in a single parent home and it is not fun. No mother should have to struggle to feed her child.

I really think that SS should stop reporting anything to do with political opinions. It's rather bothersome.

I'm still baffled as to why you restrict us ordinary folks who post on this website from talking about or debating politics yet have no problem whatsoever posting the opinions of the, shall I say, Potter Elite? If you don't want us to talk politics, stop posting quotations from those involved with the Potter-verse. It makes zero sense whatsoever. Refrain from posting the actors and writers' political op-eds and you have no need to warn us to stay away from the subject. It's almost as if you're saying they're better than us, ergo they can say what they want.

This definitely touches on a lot of real issues in society right now. I don't know much about UK politics but single mothers are definitely not given the credit they deserve for all the sacrifices they make every day worldwide. I'm glad J.K. Rowling made a point of that through her experiences. Raising a family and holding a career with a good source of income even when there are two parents is hard enough so imagine the difficulties for a single mother. Poverty should not be inflicted upon a child if it can be helped just because the other half of the family is missing.

I totally agree with wat was said above about not being allowed to give political opinions yet the admin will allow for political statements to be posted. As much as I admire Jo Rowling I don't think anyones political views should be shared so publically as I'm no doubt sure that there will be several people out there who will base their vote largely on what Rowling says. So it would be sensible for SS to refrain from posting anything with a link to politics which cud have an influence

I'm a bit baffled as well about the politics popping up on the site, but I do agree with what she's saying. Women as single mothers are often vilified, and the implication that being a single mother is wrong demeans not only women but also the idea of a family.

You don't have to read it.

I took care not to quote anything that was strongly political.

I think what's really at the heart of this is that they (cast and crew) all seem to come from the same point of view.

We're not advocating, we're just reporting.
