Default The Tale of Two - Sa16+

Ch 1
“Congratulations Miss Prince,” The aged wizard spoke, extending his right hand, “You are now an employee of the Ministry of Magic.” Agyness immediately stuck out her hand to meet his and shake it, “Thank you so much, sir. I promise, I won’t let you down.”

Agyness walked out of the employment office, located in the entry level of the Ministry of Magic, dodging the other employees that were bustling about. My first job, she thought, her full lips forming a smile on her heart-shaped face. Only nineteen years old, two years out of Hogwarts, and she had finally scored her dream job. Her parents would be so proud. “Oh darling, seven years of being a Ravenclaw has suited you well,” her mother would gush as her dad would tower off to the side, smiling and nodding in approval. Her parents would finally give her some recognition, after all of those years of fawning over her famous friends that she had gone to school with.

Not noticing where she was headed, Agyness flew into a curly-haired woman, almost knocking over her stack of books. “Agyness, how did it go?!” Hermione demanded of her friend after making a quick recovery, grabbing her by the shoulders and shaking her viciously. A wide grin formed on Agyness’s face before answering, “I start on Monday.” Hermione shrieked and threw her arms around Agyness’s petite frame, embracing her. “Hermione… can’t—breathe,” Agyness squeaked. Hermione eased her hold on her, then began interrogating, “Well, what department are you in? What are your hours? You can’t keep me waiting here all day.” Hermione began tapping her foot impatiently, and Agyness began with a little laugh, “I’m in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, of course-” Hermione interrupted her and began raving, “Oh, you’ll be with Harry, Ron, and myself; lovely! You’ll fit right in, I can introduce you to-” “Hold on, Hermione,” it was Agyness’s turn to interrupt, “I’m not a full on auror… not yet, at least. The man said that all aurors are mentored for a full year before they begin…” “Well, of course! How silly of me-” Hermione began again, but Agyness silenced her enthusiasm with the raise of her hand. “They said I’ll be mentored by someone named…” Agyness began unfolding a piece of official-looking Ministry paper, “Draco Malfoy? Heard of him?”

Hemione’s jaw dropped and she almost dropped her stack of books, again. “What?!” She almost shrieked, her cheeks flaming and her nostrils flaring. Hermione then proceeded to grab Agyness by the arm and lead her to the elevators, her curly hair flying behind her in a whirlwind. “What’s wrong?” Agyness spoke, trying to keep up with her frenzied pace. “You’ll see. My office. Now.” That was all that Hermione could muster without completely losing it.

The elevator ride was silent, with Hermione silently fuming in one corner and Agyness almost cowering in the other. When they finally reached the right floor, Hermione almost forced the elevator doors open herself and once again grabbed Agyness, almost dragging her down the hallway. When they reached Hermione’s office, Agyness was flung into a red-leathered seat as Hermione began pacing around the room in a furor. Letting her cool off, Agyness decided to look upon the organized room that was Hermione’s work space, envisioning herself soon to have a similar office of her own. A bulletin board with many colorful tacks and newspaper clippings showed pictures of fugitives, some in prison (like Bellatrix Lestrange), some still at large (like Macnair), and some that had died in incarceration (Agyness could not recall their names). Hermione decided to speak, interrupting Agyness’s thoughts, “Malfoy… Malfoy… How can you not remember that little rat?” Hermione gave her a pleading look, as though trying to force her to remember their years at Hogwarts. After a minute of thinking, Agyness responded, “Hermione, I honestly do not remember a boy named Draco Malfoy. I remember some people, like Neville, Luna, Parvati, Padma-”

Now it was Hermione’s turn to raise her hand to interrupt Agyness. She took a deep breath before she spoke, “Oh, how stupid of me. Of course you don’t remember; I can’t recall you being with us when he was around. Besides, you were a year behind us and are a year younger... Draco was… well—to put it nicely, a rather rude Slytherin.” “That’s it?” Agyness replied, raising her eyebrows so high that they couldn’t be seen beneath her dark bangs. “To tell the truth, he hasn’t changed much since...” Hermione responded. It was silent for a second, and then Agyness giggled slightly. Hermione gave her a scorching look, “What’s so funny?” “Hermione,” Agyness said, trying to speak between her chortles, “do you honestly believe that a nasty little Slytherin can intimidate me? Okay, maybe not little but… twenty year old Slytherin? Why do you think I was hired as an auror in the first place?”

At that moment, there was a knock on the door. Hermione grasped the handle and turned it open. There was a black-haired man with thick glasses and another man, who was freckled and towered above his companion. “Hello,” Harry and Ron said to Hermione at once, Ron adding a peck on Hermione’s cheek to his greeting. “Hey,” Hermione responded, her cheeks now flaming from joy while opening the door to let them in and to allow them to see Agyness, “Guess who just got hired?”

“Agyness!” The men said in unison, both running over to their old friend and grasping her in a group hug. “Guys…” Agyness squeaked, her petite frame not equipped to being squeezed by two strong men at once. When they released her, Harry began, “So, who’s going to be your mentor? Hermione, right? That’s why you’re both chatting in here?” “Actually,” Hermione began, “I was just going to let you guys know…” She grasped Harry and Ron, Ron with a bemused expression on his face, by their arms and led them outside, closing the door firmly behind her. After a few minutes, the echo of two male voices shouting, “What?!” could be heard throughout the corridor. After a few minutes of audible squabbling, the trio reentered Hermione’s office, all with the same irritated expression on their faces.

“Okay, anyone care to give me a valid reason why I should be fuming like the rest of you?” Agyness said, a hint of exasperation in her voice. At that moment, a phone rang. “Granger’s office.” Hermione answered it lightning fast. After a minute of “really?” and “uh-huh.”, Hermione hung up and turned to face Harry and Ron, starting to speak in a serious tone, “We’ve got a lead on Macnair. A big lead. If we want a chance, we have to act now.” Harry and Ron shot out of the office like bullets, leaving Hermione alone with Agyness. “Care to explain before you guys save the day…yet again?” Agyness said, somewhat sarcastically. Hermione grabbed Agyness’s hands in a motherly fashion and kneeled to chair-level to be even with her. Agyness was surprised, to say the least. “Sweetheart, just be careful. He has history.” And with that, Hermione grabbed her wand from her desk and almost ran out, leaving Agyness sitting in slight awe.

After a minute, Agyness recovered herself from the day’s madness and made her way out of Hermione’s cramped office to the elevator down the long corridor. She walked, half in a daze, absorbed in her thoughts. “What’s the big deal?” Agyness thought to herself as she gazed through the pseudo-windows on the wall, “A nasty old Slytherin bully. I think I can handle it without all of the commotion that everyone’s causing…” At that moment, Agyness almost ran into an auror who was stepping out of his office, a stack of papers almost as large as he in his grip. “Not again!” Agyness spoke when she recovered herself, her mind now set on fixing her mistake. “I am sooo sorry-” She began again, frantically trying to help the man pick up his stack of papers.

“Don’t fret… here.” The man finally spoke, turning to her and placing the papers back properly into their place with just the flick of his wand. When he turned to look at her, Agyness was speechless. He had fair skin, and was almost a good foot taller than her. He had brilliant white teeth (Agyness could tell because his perfect lips were formed into a broad grin). His eyes were a deep, blue color, and his fair blond hair was set in a perfect, half-unkempt, half-styled look. Before Agyness could gather herself, the gorgeous man spoke, “You must be the new girl, Agyness, right?” She managed to splutter out, “Y-Yes… I am.” He once again spoke before she could think of something to say, “You’ll have fun here. The year of being an auror-in-training really prepares you for the real world…” He stopped and noticed the direction that she had been walking in before, “Would you care for me to escort you to the elevator?” Agyness just smiled and nodded, becoming slightly more comfortable with this handsome stranger.

As they walked, Agyness managed to speak a coherent sentence, “So, how long have you been employed here?” “Oh, about two years. I got the job almost immediately after I finished my schooling.” The walk to the elevator was short, and the gentleman pressed the button to open the elevator for her. Agyness stepped in and said, “Thank you for the lovely chat. See you around?” “Definitely,” the man responded, winking at her. The elevator doors silently closed, and he was gone. Agyness made the slow climb up to the entry level.

She arrived at her quaint flat, located in the heart of London, in the still of the night, still pondering about the mystery man she had met earlier. As she laid her head on her pillow and tucked herself into her plush, white cotton coverlet, she realized that she never did ask the man his name.

- 's thread-

Hey all!
I'm FINALLY on summer break, so expect new work coming your way very soon.
And you all gave me the best summer gift of all: my first nominations in the Golden Goblins! Really, Best Original Character and Best Mature Story? You all are too kind.
I was so surprised, considering that this thread has been neglected for far too long.
I seriously murmured, "Oh my goodness," under my breath for five minutes after I found out last night.
Once again, thank you, thank you, thank you for all of your patience and support! Even when I first started this fan-fic, I never would have expected to have such lovely readers such as yourselves.

I'm off to invite the muse over, so a new chapter or two is coming your way!

- Mel

Ch 28
Agyness fidgeted as she had done throughout the whole flight on the unfamiliar vehicle that was the airplane. She was sure of nothing except for the fact that she might be making the biggest mistake of her life. She immediately swatted the thought away: this trip, beginning at King’s Cross station, was necessary for her own mental health. However, this healing getaway had become detrimental once Agyness had begun to fall into a rut with Marcus. For his sake as well as hers, she had no choice but to leave. She knew that she had pulled somewhat of a Draco by surprising her newfound friend by disappearing, but it was better in the long run. He needn’t have become involved with a girl from another country, much less a half-blood witch.

So there she sat, her thumbs twiddling in her lap as the airplane smoothly glided onto the landing strip. Her anxiety stemmed not only from her social state of being but also from her knowledge of muggle customs and transportation. Despite being a half-blood, she had never taken a trip on an airplane, much less by herself. Regardless of having learned of the complicated, winged contraptions in Muggle Studies, her heart pounded at the thought of travelling in anything so prone to failure. She would have much preferred apparation, floo powder, or even flight by broom, but the odds were against her. If Harry, Ron, Hermione, or Draco had bothered to have checked the floo or apparation network, even the radar in the skies, Agyness would have been embarrassed beyond belief. Draco would think her much less of a simple pawn in his successful scheme than a weak little girl who ran from her troubles, and the trio would most likely think the same. Therefore, for the sake of what was left of her damaged reputation, Agyness chose to rough it like a muggle until she was well enough to return to London.

Hastily undoing her seatbelt and tossing her purse on her arm, Agyness quickly made her way off of the intimidating airplane and towards the terminal. As she walked through a pair of sliding glass doors, her heart thudded with fear of the future. She had spent most of her money on her plane ticket and was without a paddle in a sea of people. Attempting to stow away her depressed thoughts for the moment, she slowly approached the curiosity that was the carousel of luggage. Her old trunk from her Hogwarts days had been much too large to have been placed in an overhead compartment in the plane, so Agyness had been made to check her luggage and thus relinquish more of her dismal supply of money. She observed the actions of the other people by the carousel, attempting to copy them as they deftly searched for their own bags and belongings. A sense of relief flooded through her as she spotted her trunk, almost so heavy and large that it could have stopped the revolving rubber belt of luggage. As it reached her, Agyness bent over and attempted to heave it up rather quickly, which only caused her to trip backwards.

Before she knew it, a pair of hands had reached in front of Agyness to grab the falling trunk. Without the added weight, Agyness was able to save herself from an embarrassing situation and her bum from a painful bruise. A raven-haired woman who looked as if she had parted from her youth years before had been the one to lend a helping hand. “Bonjour,” The woman spoke, a soft smile on her painted lips, “Sont vous bien?” Agyness was speechless. Should she attempt to communicate, even though she had no inkling of how to speak French? Seeing her puzzled expression, the woman continued to smile and continued on. “Hello,” She began, her Parisian accent thick yet comprehendible, “Are you alright, mademoiselle?” It was Agyness’ turn to smile, this time out of relief, as she responded, “Yes. Thank you for your help.” She reached forward, grabbing the handle of her trunk as she began to lug it off. This abrupt action did not deter the French madam. “Here,” She reached out to help Agyness carry the load, “I believe I can help you outside to a taxi.” Agyness relented, nodding as she and the stranger carried her trunk through the crowded Parisian terminal.

After passing through another set of sliding glass doors, they finally reached the outside world. Both quickly set the trunk down on the asphalt and took a moment to catch their breath. “So,” the woman began breathlessly, looping a few loose strands of hair behind her ears, “What brings you to Paris? Where are you from?” “Well,” Agyness began, her elbow leaning on her propped trunk as she attempted to invent a reason, “I’m from London. I… I just graduated from school and decided to travel.” “On your own?” The woman looked surprised, her grey eyes widening as her eyebrows rose, the age lines on her forehead becoming more defined. “In a country where you don’t speak ze national language?” Agyness was surprised at the gall that the middle-aged Parisian had. She seemed to see right through Agyness’ ruse.

Sighing, Agyness grimaced and answered. “Yes, and yes. I needed to get away, for my own sake.” Her brown-eyed gaze dropped from the woman’s face to the black asphalt beneath them. It was embarrassing to tell a stranger of one’s troubles, no matter how vaguely exposed they were. Sensing her discomfort, the woman changed her tone from one of demanding inquiry to one of comfort. “I’ve been there before,” The woman sighed herself as she gazed at the passing taxis and cars that zoomed before them in the parking lot. There was a terse silence before the woman spoke again. “I’m Graciela, Gracie for short,” She smiled, her lips parting to reveal yellowed teeth as she stuck out a hand across the propped-up trunk towards Agyness. Turning, Agyness’ gloved hand met Gracie’s as she smiled in return. “Agyness,” She said shortly. “Lovely to make your acquaintance.” As fabric left skin and their hands parted, Gracie began speaking in what was now a more comfortable atmosphere between the two females.

“Where do you plan to stay during your time here?” Gracie inquired as she gazed at Agyness’ face, somewhat jealous of her lack of wrinkles. Biting her lower lip, the younger of the two began, “I’m not sure. I came here on a whim. I’m sure that I could find a hostel of some sort.” Gracie looked mortified. “Nonsense!” She cried, putting her hands on her hips in a most Mrs.Weasley-like manner and surprising Agyness with the motherliness that overtook her appearance. Gracie continued on through Agyness’ flabbergasted expression, “You’re staying with me.” Gracie’s words had a tone of finality to them, but Agyness still couldn’t comprehend the kindness of the stranger. Seeing that Agyness remained astounded, Gracie plowed on, “Don’t worry. I have an apartment in ze city. You’ll love it. Besides, isn’t this ze point of your trip? To have somewhat of an… oh, what’s ze word in English? An adventure, oui?” Agyness was saved from her stupor by Gracie’s final words. It was almost as if Gracie had taken the words straight from the horse’s mouth.

A large grin lightening her solemn features as dimples dotted her cheeks, Agyness nodded and spoke in an eager tone. “Yes… yes! I’d love to. I can’t tell you how much I-” Gracie cut her off as she wordlessly motioned for Agyness to take hold of the other end of the trunk. Having already taken the other side, Gracie promptly waved down a taxi. The lanky cabby quickly hopped out and popped open the trunk of the silver vehicle before scurrying back into the driver’s seat. As Agyness loaded her belongings into the trunk of the car, with Gracie’s assistance, and eventually slammed shut the door of the car, her mind was racing and her heart was pumping.

As Gracie gave rushed instructions in French to the driver, Agyness couldn’t help but grin at her reflection in the rearview mirror of the car. She knew that stepping into a car with a foreign stranger was mental, but hadn’t she already survived Dublin? Besides, this time was different. Agyness was with a woman, an older woman, one who seemed to want to mother her and keep her out of harm’s way. Definitely not a young, rogue Dubliner. As the taxi began to zoom away from the airport, Agyness couldn’t help but smile, her expectations high. Both women seemed to feel the petals of a new relationship begin to bloom.

Eh... I'm not saying anything. I'm having a bit of trouble figuring her out myself.

Me too! There should be another chapter (hopefully more) in the next day or two.

Sorry, sorry! I'm working on it! The reason I get these posts to everyone's liking is because of my constant picking and prodding at the details. It's about 2:15 AM for me, so I'm heading to bed and working on it more tomorrow. But I promise, before midnight tonight, you'll all have something new.

Ch 29
The taxi slowed to a halt and ended what had been a virtually silent drive. As the driver had wound throughout the streets and past some of the world’s most famous landmarks, Agyness had gazed open-mouthed at the exquisite beauty that was Paris. The architectural design was positively jaw-dropping and the young witch could not believe that simple muggles years ago had created such wonders. It took all of her might and common sense not to apparate straight from the cab and onto the top of the Eiffel Tower, in front of the Louvre, or inside of the Notre Dame. Even after Gracie had paid the driver and Agyness had made her way to the front of the apartment complex, she itched to run off into the heart of the city and explore its rich history.

Alas, such adventuring would have to wait. Agyness was plucked from her reverie as Gracie began to hurry her along towards her lodgings. Quickly grabbing the other end of the trunk, Gracie wordlessly began to rush Agyness down hallways and up staircases until they reached the top floor. Once again, both women were winded as they finished yet another hurried journey. Quickly retrieving her keys from her trouser pocket and inserting a small, silver one into the door, the lock opened with a click and Gracie turned the silver doorknob. As she quickly stepped through the threshold and lugged Agyness’ trunk over the hardwood floor, Agyness took her time to absorb in the sights, smells, and atmosphere of the Parisian flat.

From where she stood in the hallway, in seemed quite quaint. The walls were painted in a monotonous white and everything seemed quite plain until Agyness stepped into the living room. Just like everything else, it was quite small. However, the plain white walls had come to life with the addition of numerous pictures. Some were polaroids, some were film strips, some were digital prints, and others looked like clippings from magazines. Seeing her interest, Gracie smiled and joined Agyness as she stood in front of the couch. “I’m a photographer,” She spoke proudly, her arms crossed over her chest as she scanned the images on the makeshift mural. Agyness nodded, noticing a mix of photos that seemed both personal and professional. How was it that on her travels she always managed to run into artsy folk? First were Marcus, the disc jockey, and Jesabelle, the actress. Now Agyness was in the company of what seemed to be a photographic obsessor? It was a pity that none of the photos moved. Agyness knew that with a simple charm she could make the stationary people come to life, but it was prudent not to muck around.

Gesturing towards what seemed like a magazine cut-out, Agyness inquired, “Is this yours? I mean, did you shoot this?” If it was possible, Gracie’s prideful grin widened evermore to reveal all of her teeth as she nodded. “Oui. It was my first professional photo shoot that was actually published. It took me years to finally achieve such success. After years of trying, I’ve just recently sunken my teeth into ze industry.”

Agyness couldn’t keep an impressed grin away from her face. “Wow,” She spoke, Gracie still standing tall and proud. She wanted to speak up, to mention how much money Gracie must have been raking in with such a high-class job, but she stopped herself. Presuming that Agyness’s silence was the product of adoration, she began in a vain tone, smiling as she picked at her fingernails, “Some call me ze French Annie Leibovitz, or Terry Richardson.” Agyness, having no clue who the woman spoke of, simply continued to smile and nod as she kept her gloved hands politely clasped together. Gracie made to continue on with her peacocking but immediately snapped out of it, throwing her hands in the air melodramatically. “Why, I am so sorry! You must think I’m a talkative fool. Here, let me take ze trunk and show you around my humble abode.”

As Agyness offered to lend a helping hand, Gracie quickly swatted her away as she began to lug the large, leather trunk down a narrow hallway. Before following her, Agyness had to smile and shake her head as she had a short moment to herself. Why was it that she always attracted the most whimsical sorts of folk? Maybe it was her heritage, the blood that pumped through her veins and made her a magical being, which attracted these characters to such a plain girl. Quickly ending her train of thought, Agyness rushed off to meet Gracie down the hallway before her absence was noticed.
----------
"Welcome to Paris, where the local time is nine o’ clock. We will be taxiing to the gate for the next few minutes, so please remain seated with your seatbelts fastened until the captain has turned off the seatbelt sign. We will be parking at gate eleven and for those of you for whom Paris is your final destination, bags can be claimed at carousel three. On behalf of the flight crew and Irish Airlines, thank you for choosing to fly with us today and we hope to see you again on a future flight. Use of cellular telephones is now permitted. Doors to arrival, cross-check, verify straps."

As the heavily-accented voice of the pilot faded from the intercom, Draco narrowed his eyes as he stared out of the small, Plexiglas window that he was seated by. The sun was shining brightly over the streets of Paris and the Eiffel Tower loomed large in the distance. Slowly pulling down the window’s shutter and facing the seat in front of him, Draco sighed impatiently. What had possessed him to take a flight? Couldn’t he have apparated, couldn’t he have found a fireplace with floo powder handy, couldn’t he have done anything that didn’t involve being in the company of muggles? The hour-long flight had been an hour too long. It had been a rather snap decision to fly to Paris, but Draco had figured that it was for the better; he could only hope and pray that Agyness had remained at the airport for at least another hour.

As the plane came to a complete stop, Draco couldn’t help but pull the Polaroid of Agyness from the chest pocket of his coat. The smile on her face brought one to his. Seeing her face, even though it was simply composed of ink and paper, helped to boost his spirits. He was reminded of his purpose for following her on this wild goose chase. His smile was replaced by his trademark smirk as he realized that the photograph was still. He resisted the temptation to pull his wand out and charm the inhabitants of the picture to move. Quickly placing the Polaroid back in his pocket, he unbuckled his seat belt and strode away from his business class seat. No matter how desperate he was, it would have been a dismal day to have seen Draco Malfoy take a commercial flight. Striding from the terminal and eventually reaching the parking lot, his recent burst of confidence quickly deflated. Agyness was nowhere to be found, as usual. A frown appeared on his features as he began to tread away from hordes of muggles, his hands stuffed into the pockets of his black trousers. He quickly formed a mental plan.

After finding the closest, most upper-echelon hotel available, Draco would arrange to have Binka bring him his luggage in his suite. He had left his baggage far behind and it would be far easier to have his house elf take care of his belongings, as she did daily, than to place his posh, essential effects in the possession of incompetent muggles. No matter how much hardship Draco had seen during and after Voldemort’s reign, his prejudice against those with non-magical blood was deeply set in his DNA. After deciding that he would get his things together, Draco’s plan came to a standstill.

How would he go about searching for Agyness? Would he do as the ginger at the airport had done and take her Polaroid around, inquiring every person that he saw as to her whereabouts? Definitely not. It was too peasant-like, too muggle-like, and most of all, too perilous. If the nutter was still after Agyness and himself, putting oneself out in broad daylight was not the brightest idea. Draco’s mind reverted to a previous day, when Harry had given him important words of warning. Time was of the essence and fate seemed to be against him. The clock was ticking and it seemed like it wouldn’t be long before the chimes of defeat would echo in Draco’s psyche.

I won't say anything. My lips are sealed.

Draco has changed, in some ways. I couldn't go about writing a Draco who liked to skip through the flowers all day with muggles, now could I? The war might have changed him, but not that drastically.

No, no, continue! I love enthusiasm. It helps to motivate me to write some more.

Great! Love it, I love Paris! And, as the city of love, I presume you will be letting some sparks fly soon when Draco finds Agyness... right? *tries to control her impatience*

More!

Hey all! I've been quite busy again, and it's summer. But I wanted to give a huge

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU x 99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999

To all of you lovely people for helping me win Best Mature Story in the Golden Goblins. I was happy to be nominated in two categories, but to actually win one was a different thing entirely! It felt like... giddiness x infinity.

But now, onto what all of you are most interested in: a new chapter. I'm getting to it! The thing is my days have been dampened by a computer virus. Don't worry, it's gone and my computer is mostly clean, but for some reason it doesn't like to save my files and throws random ones away. I don't want to write a piece of chapter and come back to it later to see that it's been lost. I'll try to get ahold of a friend's computer soon!
