Default Ministry Masquerade Ball

It's that time of year again when all the holiday parties have ended and family time is coming to a close, but that doesn't mean excitement isn't in the air. Your Ministry Department Heads have planned something extra special to bring you back to work and meet the new employees. This year they have sent out the invitations to request your presence at a masquerade ball held in the Atrium.

The elaborate and timeless gold, Castleton green ,and black décor practically whisks you away to a whimsical past of high society. There is a dance floor placed just near the fountain where a live band is playing nothing but the best classics from over the centuries. If dancing isn't your cup of tea then head over to the buffet area where the caterers have worked hard to make many different course items just for you. From exquisite canapés to tantalizing desserts, there is something for everyone.

With many circular tables set up around the area there is plenty of places to sit, chat with friends, and enjoy your evening.

A little something her. "Big flower fan?" She hoped he didn't mind if she went back to making a plate while she waited for his answer. On second thought, she cut him a slice of the cake too, placing it on another plate. "If I wasn't working with plants I would've loved to be a food critic."
Gabriel's half-hidden face broken into a half-smile as he chuckled at the woman's joke. That had been a joke, right? Well spotted...funny because...well, because it was a tiger lily. And they were spotted. "It's a nice touch," he said, trying to be more serious. He was laughing with her, not at her, after all.

"I would not call myself a flower fan, no," he said, eyeing her second slice of cake, on a separate plate. Was she going to eat two slices, he wondered. "More like...raised in a rainforest. Taking care of the flowers was one of my chores, similar to... how some children have to babysit, yes? We babysat the flowers." He thought briefly about her food critic comment. "Why can't you do both?" he asked curiously. Surely she still ate, even if she had to work with plants.

Lollipop? Honestly, did the woman know anything about subtlety? Clearly not. Because he was fairly certain that Sian's aim had been to look like a giant lemon sherbet with hair and she had nailed it. But if she thought for one moment that he was going to put anything that been near her head in his mouth she was gravely mistaken.

Still, he guessed he should acknowledge her since her outburst had pretty much ousted his secure position. He gave the woman a nod and a wave and then stepped out of the shadows. He looked pale and cranky, with eyes dark as if he was in need of a long nap. Might as well walk the perimeter of the room, he thought. As long as he could avoid Hollingberry, perhaps he could circle back to his corner.

He hoped Sachin didn’t hear the noise over the music. ”Or should we check out the buffet?” He certainly could use a drink.
Two people stepped in front of him, one of whom, despite the mask he recognized. Bain was not one that enjoyed socializing or talking in general, but he should probably be seen observing cultural civilities at some point. And Phora? Well, at least he wasn’t as standoffish or as…thunderous… as some of the others. He cast a look toward Sian who was now harassing a young man. Another point in Phora's favor? He appeared to be with someone. So in theory the man was not likely to linger long in conversation.

”Good evening, Phora.” He tucked a hand into his jacket pocket. ”I’m surprised you made it down in time. I thought those reports regarding shipment of confiscated Appaloosa Puffskeins and the bevy of stolen passports would have kept you longer.”

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

“It is.’’ But then Sachin was doing some more thinking. “Actually, you make that suit look good.’’ Lovesick still? Yes, he was, even after them being together for a while. He put a hand reassuringly on Conley’s arm. Something was making the other man uncomfortable and he knew it. “You look perfect.’’ Then Sachin was chuckling. “No, of course not. Why would you think that?” And as if to prove it, the Ambassador moved his hand, accepting Conley’s offered arm. “I do. But can we check out the food first?’’ he asked eagerly, already steering his husband to the buffet. “I’m sure I need to get you fed, anyway.’’ Sachin had not heard Conley’s stomach which was a good thing…

Oh? Con already was striking up a conversation with a colleague? “Namaste,’’ he greeted the woman politely. Now he was wondering how on earth he was going to find anyone he knew because of the masks. Sachin guessed he’d have to recognise them from their voices. “Um… well, anything chicken related is always good,’’ he said after a quick look over the table. “Nice to meet you, Jane. I’m Sachin Singh-Phora and this is my husband Conley.”

There {Bain’s} was a voice he did not recognise. Sachin glanced at Conley in question.

In a stark departure from his usual dark, thrifty, function-over-style choice of attire, Kaiser had been persuaded to splash out for once, on a sort of pastel ensemble. Although, in reality, there had been little to not persuasion necessary, and 'splash out' was perhaps too tame a term. Especially factoring in the shoes. How could shoes cost three times as much as the rest of the outfit put together? ... Is the question Kaiser might usually have asked if he weren't wonderfully preoccupied with other things. And anyway, they fit the whole aesthetic, and he complemented his plus one perfectly.

Entering the Atrium with his Arm Candi walking in step beside him, arms linked, Kaiser couldn't help but notice how much more vibrant and arresting the colours seemed; from the regular interior of the Ministry to the decor and the range of jewel-bright suits, gowns, masks, shoes - no, but really, these shoes, weren't they amazing? - all of it. Kaiser adjusted his own mask on his face with his free hand; no doubt at some point tonight he'd be removing it, shrinking it down, and slipping it into his pocket so his face could be free once more.

"You know, I would always have felt out of place in a party like this before," he said to Candela, alternative between looking down at her and back out at the guests already present, the decor, the masks, the band, the dance floor. Kaiser didn't really need to say any of this to Candi, she knew it about him already, but he felt the need to delve into the topic all the same. "Even just for one night, too grand, you know? And now here's a ball like this just when it all starts to feel right, amazing isn't it? Like fate. Look, there's Mr Hollingberry, and Regina is in my department, so is Alphonsine, and is that Eiji and Missa? Did I know they'd be here? I can't remember. Actually, I can't remember half of these people, that's worrying, I should meet more of them this year, or maybe they're new, or maybe it's the masks. Are you hungry? Maybe we could dance, or go talk to someone, let's do something." And breathe. Wait- "This mask..." Kaiser tugged at it again. "... è molto irritante."

Okay.

Now breathe.

Suffice it to say, Kaiser was much more animated and upbeat than he had been since long before his Ministry days, near unrecognisable with the suit and mask (and don't forget the shoes!) thrown in. The best feeling.

”Cheeky,” he retorted to Sachin’s complement about the suit, but Sachin’s reassurance had done the trick and he stopped fidgeting with his outfit. He still couldn’t help but think that all the masks in the room was a bit disconcerting to say the least and he was glad he was not the one in charge of Security for tonight’s event. ”Just thought you might want to chat up some old friends.” he’d simple replied. The image of that young lady form the trial (Eureka) came to mind and it wasn’t liked being married meant they had to be glued to each other’s sides. Still, he was glad that Sachin had no plans to abandon him to the anonymous crowd.

Enough worrying, he tried to tell himself as Sachin took his arm. ”Food, certainly.” He wasn’t about to admit to his husband that he hadn’t eaten today. If he did, Sachin was likely to pile his plate with food and honestly? Despite the stomach growl, Conley wasn’t that hungry. ”By the by,” he said leaning closer to Sachin. ”You look smashing tonight too.” As for that dance? They were definitely going to dance tonight.

”Well, it is lovely,” Conley gave the lady a big smile. ”And welcome Jane.” Always the social butterfly, Sachin beat him to the introductions. It was one of the things that made the Indian Ambassador good at his job. And since introductions were handled, he asked the next question. ”What department are you joining?” For once, he had no knew members of his own department and the only vacancy he was in dire need of filling was the Mexican Diplomat. It was a nice feeling, not to have to worry about anyone new needed to be trained.

”Yes, well, I was able to delegate the puffskeins to Ms. Roa ,” Conley replied, trying not to sound too surprised by Bain’s presence. Something about the man triggered Conley’s already fastidious nature to go on heightened alert. Perhaps it was simply the perpetual scowl on the man’s face. Anyone that frowned that much must have some sort of personal demons. As for the passport issues? If only he could find someone to fill the Immigration Investigator positions, then he wouldn’t have to deal with it himself. But there was no way Conley was going to inform Bain of his lack of staffing. The last thing he needed was for Bain to involve himself in DIMC affairs. He’d handle the passport issues tomorrow, maybe get one of the Immigration Officers to help.

Conley caught the look from his husband and misinterpreting it added, ”And it’s Singh-Phora.” He aimed for a tone that implied he was attempting to be polite with his correction. ”Bain Goldwasser,” Conley said motioning to Sachin. ”May I introduce my husband, Ambassador Sachin Singh-Phora and Ms. Jane Howard.” He motioned Sachin and then Jane. ”Sachin. Jane. This is Bain Goldwasser, the new Magical Law Enforcement Department Head.” And all around portentous old man, he thought.

Jane was suddenly in the midst of a flurry of introductions--these two obviously knew each other--ah yes, they were married. She nodded back graciously to Sachin's greeting and smiled at them both. She was just about to open her mouth to answer the question about where she worked when a third person injected himself into the conversation--someone important, or he thought he was, at any rate. Ah, Magical Law Enforcement. It was going to be difficult to sort people out later when they had their masks off, but Jane was usually pretty good at reading body language and remembering voices.

The question about what department she was in gave her pause, though--the job letter had mentioned friends and family, not colleagues, but Jane was not sure yet how much to say to whom. Better to err on the side of caution so early in her career, she decided. Especially in the presence of an official of Magical Law Enforcement...

"So nice to meet you. I'm Jane Howard, I'm just starting at the Ministry...Dept. of Research and Records."

While he had thought they were going to be late, it appeared that they might be the first ones here. ”We aren’t early? Are we?” Conley asked turning Sachin. For some reason, the idea of them being the first ones here made him feel old. On the other hand, he was just glad this year’s event wasn’t taking place in the greenhouses again.
He hadn't had time to go home and instead had changed into a satin blue suit and matching mask in his office before coming own to the atrium.

Adam hadn’t planned on buying a new suit. The green one he had worn to the last gala/ball/ministry dancing thingie had been perfectly fine. It wasn’t like he had the need to wear suits often and it had been a couple of years, but for some reason, he had found himself purchasing a new suit because he hadn’t been able to find a suitable matching facemask for his green suit. The mask felt a little pointless to him, and because he couldn’t ear his really ugly glasses, he was going to have a hard time navigating things tonight. The only reason he hadn’t pulled out his old support cane was because Zita had agreed to come with him. And for that he was very grateful, not to mention he was excited to show her off. Just because he couldn’t see her, didn’t mean others couldn’t. That being said, he wasn't sure how he was supposed to introduce her to people. "How are ve to know each ozzer?" he asked Zita, reaching for her hand.

As much as Z hated the ministry she wasn't going to pass up an evening to get all dressed up. She still enjoyed putting on a show with her looks and this was the perfect opportunity to have Adam's coworkers be really jealous that he was with her and they weren't.

She searched and searched for the perfect dress and she felt she had found it. In the dark purple long gown, heels, and mask Zita was ready for the party. Her arm was around Adam's and she thought he looked amazing this evening though she was worried that he would struggle without his glasses. As they walked in she couldn't help but think about the last time there was a more formal event in this very spot. It wasn't until Adam's question that her thoughts left and she found herself blinking at him.

What? He was joking, right? "I would think after two years you would call me your girlfriend, unless she are embarrassed to be with me in front of your coworkers."

Maybe this night wasn't going to be all she had thought it would.

SPOILER!!: Charles

He supposed it couldn't hurt, this change up, and that more formal...even regal events for the Ministry were just as good as the more wholesome and intimate settings he often leaned towards. He was dressed for the occasion as well, donning robes of warm yellow and vermillion with a crown upon his head that he felt was a bit too much even for himself. Though this too he had been assured was perfect for the occasion. Slipping his mask on before emerging from the shadows (the muggle prime minister had been in for a true treat of the eyes this evening during their monthly meeting prior to the Minister for Magic's arrival to the Atrium), Charles took a moment to steady himself and drank a bit of tonic brewed by Airey. He had been quite taken aback by the Mysteries' head's offer and skill with a cauldron, he had not know the man in such capacity, but the tonics were helping immensely with the fatigue he had been feeling as of late.

Posture straight, Charles stepped into the romantic lighting of the Atrium seeking out Victoria to greet his employees and their guests. "Good evening, Ministry," he bellowed jovially, though with a little less luster than the norm, while politely waving his hand to each in passing. He was quick to note the younger Miss, rather he assumed she was a Miss seeing as she was unaccompanied, and made his way over to her. She...may have been one of the new faces he had passed off to Bain to help conduct the background checks necessary for new employees. "AND a good evening to you," he smiled warmly at her.

She knew Charles was not a fan of the more formal orientations, but Victoria couldn't help but smile at the way the ministry looked and how handsome he was looking, though she watched him for a bit with a worried expression. She feared the stress of the job was wearing on him and he wasn't fully taking care of himself. They had been together long enough now that she felt she could read him pretty well, but she wondered if she needed to be more attentive to make sure he was sleeping and eating enough.

In her navy blue gown and matching mask she greeted all the employees as she made her way over to the minister of magic. "Well minister you really do clean up nice." Her smile grew as she thought about the holiday and how she wished they could have had just a little more time, but work was upon them, though she had worked over the break with quidditch still going.

"Have you seen Alana at all?" Her daughter wouldn't come with her of course, she said about needing to find her way on her own. So she didn't press it further and figured she'd just see her here.

Entering the ministry made Alana nervous. She had been there before, but not as an official employee. She was excited for this new adventure and the doors that she could help open if it all worked out. She knew squibs were more equal in some ways, especially with her mother working as hard as she had any chance she could get to advocate for squibs, but now that she was working at the ministry and in the ministry office she was going to fully prove they were valuable.

Checking her watch and hoping she wasn't late the blonde made her way towards the food table. Her silver mask matching her dress made it a little hard to see, but she found a plate and decided she would check out the sweets before doing anything else.

There, the party could start now. The Senior Undersecretary was here, dressed to the nines in a new tartan suit and turtleneck and chain. He even had a stupid little mask on, which he was 99% sure belonged to Dunk. But whatever, Fletcher had made it fit his face, and so here he was. Time to put a smile on and go mingle. But first... canapes, anyone? He made a beeline for that table.

David had two settings: fancy, and slightly less fancy. Tonight was an occasion for the former, though. He'd even put on a mask? Had he done this right? He shoved his hands in his trouser pockets and trailed around behind Jessica, looking rather surly and also feeling ridiculous.

Did he see anyone he knew? Just Luther, and... oh look, Jessica's boss. Conley. David did NOT want to talk to him again, so he did his best to steer his date in the opposite direction.

Had it really been another year already? Grae was in awe of how quickly her time at the Ministry had been flying by. Granted, the past few weeks had seemed to drag - the malfunctioning floos and lifts had taken its toll on the department, and the extra stress was tough to handle. But considering how fast time was flying, Grae couldn't believe it had already been four years since she started her job.

The former Gryffindor was feeling relaxed and rejuvenated after the holiday break, and she was looking forward to one last soiree before getting back to work. Dressed in a sleek gold gown and an ornamental matching mask, Grae entered the Atrium, scanning around for any familiar faces. It would be hard to spot her coworkers with all these fancy masks.

Why any employer would throw a masquerade ball as a welcome party for new employees was slightly perplexing to Jasper Cohen. Connecting names to faces would be quite the challenging task with everyone sporting face masks. Regardless, he welcomed any chance to dig through the dusty box of old theater props in the attic - and he had done just that to find a mask for this evening, which he had transfigured to resemble a creature he'd been studying a lot lately: an owl. Before Jasper had departed his position at the university, he was working on a publication about the magical affinity of different species of owls. So, needless to say, he was feeling quite sentimental toward the wise old creatures.

While he was looking forward to meeting some new coworkers, he was disappointed that Ben wasn't able to accompany him tonight. While Jasper had flown back early to start his new job, his husband was still back in the States visiting family.

Jasper had taken a quick turn around the room before noticing a nervous-looking woman by the dessert table. "Please tell me I'm not the only new hire here," he said as he approached, grabbing a cookie at the same time. He only assumed that she was new, as she wasn't chatting away or looking like she knew her way around - unlike most of the other people in the room. Perhaps the Ministry should have made them wear "I'm New!" stickers to identify each other better.

Another year, another ministry party (that did look amazing, by the way) and probably another year where he would get passed over for the Head Auror job because of some ridiculous combination of favoritism and people thinking he was too young. Hooorrrrray. Ronan was just glad that his mask hid most of his face, because it had been attracting a lot of looks recently and he just wasn't feeling it tonight. Not that one could tell by his suit. After all, even if he wasn't feeling it, he did still want to look his best.

On his way through the room, though, he did overhear something that piqued his interest and perk up his mood a bit. A new MLE department head. Interesting. Bain Goldwasser. Committing that name to memory. And hoping there was no previous knowledge of anyone in the department that would brew any sort of favoritism or resentment that would yet again get in the way of his personal career advancement.

Things were possibly looking up for the twenty-five-year-old. Finally.

I was just sitting for a moment and taking everything in as I’ve never really been to anything like this,” she explained. ”Also, I don’t really know anyone yet...”

Sure... that seemed like a completely acceptable excuse to be a party pooper wallflower.

He would be absolutely tickled to know her thoughts and, on instinct he even offered his hand in assistance to help her stand. It did seem like she was wearing quite the dress, a very lovely one, but he would be positively mortified if his suggestion were to have caused her to fall on her lovely face. "Well, now you know myself," he chuckled, his cheeks full and rosy, so let's see about making some more introductions, shall we?"

And speaking of, Victoria had found her way over to him. He would have jested about how was she able to identify him in a mask, but it was all too obvious that she could easily do so at this point. "Ah, here is a prime opportunity. This is one of my department heads," he began while gesturing to the exquisite blonde, his cheeks just a bit more rosy at the compliment. "Victoria Culloden of Magical Games and Sports. Victoria, this is...well...hmmm...come to think of it, I do not think I caught your name, my dear." He offered his girlfriend department head a cheeky little wink before shifting his attention back to the new employee.

"I cannot say that I have...though I may simply be having a difficult time spotting her among this sea of masks." Something that had had him object to this idea initially. Even though he had apparently been his own idea? Curious.

It was her mask.

He had no idea how she had talked him into this and he had spent practically the entire day reflecting back on this simple thought. He truly, truly, did not want to be here. SPOILER!!: Charles

Ilse took the Minister’s hand as she stood, grateful for the assistance, before realizing...

Holy Harry Potter! I’m touching the Minister of Magic!

Now that she was standing properly on her own two feet, what was she supposed to do? Was she supposed to let go of the offered hand or would that be rude? But it would be awkward to just keep holding his hand, right? Hand hand hand. Her hand started sweating a bit.

Thankfully at that moment, another woman appeared at the Minister’s side, and he was introducing them. Letting go of the Minister’s hand, she reached to shake the hand of the newcomer. ”Oh! Of course! Sorry... I’m Ilse, Ilse Saunders. I’m in Accidents & Catastrophes. A Spells Patent Agent,” she explained proudly. There were few things in life that Ilse was proud of or confident about, but this was one of them. Even after so many years studying, she still found spell-building to be absolutely fascinating and would totally geek out over it if anyone encouraged it.

”It’s nice to meet you, Ms. Culloden,” she said, a smile growing on her face as she caught a bit of the Minister’s wink and quickly picked up on some chemistry. As the two of them began looking for another woman, Ilse decided it might be time to gracefully excuse herself so the Minister could make the rounds. ”If you’ll both excuse me, I think I’m actually going to go get a drink,” she said with a graciousness that had somehow magically appeared when she’d put on her fancy gown.

With a final smile at the couple two of them, she carefully made her way over to the drinks.

She had noticed the hand touching and thought it was always fun to see how people reacted to handshakes the minister would give. Women especially, he was after all a magical celebrity for his position. She had the same reactions quite a few years ago. "I'm sorry I didn't mean to interrupt. You don't have to leave on my behalf." She really didn't mean to interrupt. Reaching for the woman's hand she shook it, "Very nice to meet you. I hope you are enjoying this little event so far."

Her eyes went back to Charles before searching the room again, "That could be. I know I shouldn't be mothering, but I just can't help it." Especially when it came to Alana. When Isle said about getting a drink is when she noticed, "Oh I think that is her over near the drinks and food. My daughter is a new employee as well. She will be in the minister office." Maybe the two could find things in common, she hoped Alana wouldn't have a hard time fitting in.

SPOILER!!: Jasper

Someone was coming up to talk to her. It wasn't that she was unsocial, but she was at her first really big job and these would be her coworkers and that just terrified her a bit, especially since she wasn't sure how she would be looked at once everyone knew she didn't do magic. Giving the man a smile as she turned with her plate, "No, you aren't. I'm new to all of this as well."

Not having her mother's last name helped a bit too, it meant she could just be new and not a department head's daughter. She was so afraid people would think she only got the job for that reason, though she wondered herself if the minister didn't have a hand in it a little, but Alana wanted to make this her thing so she pushed that aside.

"I'm Alana Potter. I will be working in the minister's office as the new receptionist."

Maybe this night wasn't going to be all she had thought it would.

”Vhat?” Of course he called her his girlfriend. No, he wasn’t embarrassed by her. What was she going on about? If there was one thing that Adam had learned about Zita in the past two years, it was that the woman often seemed rather suspicious. Perhaps that was his fault. He had, as she had put it, taken his time to move from friend to boyfriend. It was perhaps a good thing that Adam was more blasé about things. It kept them from some very silly arguments sometimes.

Still, he wasn’t sure what had triggered Zita this time. Was it being in the Ministry? She did really detest this place something fierce. He went over what he had said and figured something must have gotten lost in translation. Sure, Adam had gotten better with the greatly confusing language that was English, but he still sometimes didn’t get things right. ”Ze masks,” tried to clarify, perhaps sounding a bit baffled. He had meant, how would he introduce her to anyone with everyone wearing masks. The man was basically a step above blind and well, he already had problems identifying people on a good day.

And in case she had any more silly ideas that he was embarrassed by her, he slipped an arm around her waist and gave her a quick, but pointed kiss. ”You look extra beautiful tonight.” And then as if to clarify things further (and to also make a statement) he reached out in a way that looked sorta like a wave but was intended to stop the person(s) walking nearby. ” Meet mein girlfriend,” he said perhaps a bit loudly. Adam was lucky he just happened to be shouting at talking to a fellow unspeakable so he didn’t look like a total nutter.

Jane had just opened her mouth to say something when her attention was momentarily distracted by a woman in a garish yellow dress shouting across the room to the Head of Magical Law Enforcement who'd just introduced himself. Well, apparently these functions got rather wild, rather early.

She turned back to the men who'd first greeted her and the woman who'd complimented her gown. "What about you? Do you all work at the Ministry as well?"

Dalton wasn't exactly sure what had possessed him to actually go to the yearly Ministry event this time. He'd been working here for... well, he didn't count the years, so he wasn't sure, but a fair few of these events had happened and, bar the first one when he'd felt obliged to be there, he'd happily been 'busy'.

Tonight, however, the twenty-eight year old clearly had nothing better to do. Or something like that. So here he was, late and looking awkward in a suit, but glad that at least he had the uppermost part of his covered with the simplest of black masks.

Standing in the corner with a drink in hand, Dalton didn't look like he was going to be jumping into conversation any time soon.

Jessica had decided to wear all black as well, but not to match David. Oh no - she had on bright red lipstick. It looked divine on her, with her complexion and hair color. The black really made it stand out. And her mask was simple as well to ensure that all the attention was on her lips.

Maybe, just maybe, that was on purpose. And had nothing to do with her date.

You know...maybe. Ahem.

She was aware that he was behind her, and so she turned to hook arms with him. "Where are the refreshments?" she asked in false demure, but her smirk gave her away. Were any of her other colleagues/friends here? She noticed her boss right away and was about to say hello when David like JETTED past. "Whoah there...trying to get me in trouble?" she teased.

Adam - MERLIN. Of all people to stop them - ADAM. The strange bloke from David's level O_O Jessica smiled....politely.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Now that Conley had stopped fidgeting and Sachin had established why his husband had seemed anxious about him leaving, he was ready to dive into all of the fun. This was a social event, and he thrived in activities like these. Since Conley was in agreement to food, he thought their first stop was settled. Regardless if Conley was hungry, the Ambassador was going to make sure he ate heartily. But wasn’t that sweet of Con? A wide smile appeared on Sachin’s face. “All these good looks are just for you.”

There would be plenty of time to socialise later. Or so he thought for the couple bumped into someone else {Bain}. It was another stranger to him at least. Sachin wasn’t sure he liked this man very much. Had this newcomer expected Conley to spend the duration of the event stuck in his office? Ooh, he loved it when Conley used their joined surnames. “Namaste. Nice meeting you. All the best with the new job.’’ Sachin didn’t have much to say to the new DH otherwise.

Not wanting to leave Jane out, Sachin looked around at her. “Decided yet what you want to try first?’’ He himself reached for a plate and a few Tea Finger sandwiches. Conley had better buckle up and be ready to eat with him.

The first mistake she had made was bringing Ari along shopping with her when she’d made the decision to attend the latest Ministry event. Although, the birds on her dress did nearly remind her of her former Hogwarts house. Nearly. It wasn’t like they were eagles, after all. Even so, she felt awkward as she’d entered the Atrium, blue eyes hidden by her mask, and made her way over to the refreshments. If only she’d known if Arabella was attending, or even her father-in-law. Although, as she’d let herself think for a moment, she’d realized Albert would have likely been even more uncomfortable with the event than she was. Either way, she felt like she’d have felt more comfortable with either of them.

It was lovely and she'd promised her cousin she'd make the most of the evening, so that's exactly what she planned on doing.

The brunette paused just by the edge of the dance floor, swaying slightly to the music. An amused smile tugged at the corners of her lips when the minister made his entrance, a king in looks and spirits tonight, it seemed. She let her gaze linger on him for a moment more before scanning the rest of the area around her for familiar faces. Some company might be nice.
Masquerades were absolutely not Bryony’s thing. Even if she hadn’t been an Auror for years now, all the anonymity was grating on her nerves, and if she hadn’t felt a responsibility to make an appearance, the blonde would have preferred to stay home with Sophia. Except, her daughter had taken one look at the dress she had acquired, along with the somewhat coordinating mask, cooed, and there hadn’t been anything she wouldn’t do for her baby girl. So she’d made an appearance, even if she’d maneuvered her way into donning a pair of leggings underneath the skirt incase anything happened. Constant vigilance and all, not to mention she hadn’t forgotten what had occurred during the Roller trial.

At least she recognized a few faces, beyond the masks. All her training hadn’t abandoned her after all, as she slipped into a position standing next to Emilia. “Anything that seems suspicious yet?,” she murmured to the other girl, noting how the brunette was scanning the room.

David was certain no one would recognize him in this ridiculous mask, even though it did remind him of his glasses and that was somewhat comforting to his face. Refreshments, yes, they should go get--- "Trouble?" he replied to Jessica in a low mumble, hoping she hadn't seen chatty Conley. But then, suddenly, someone else was YELLING an introduction to him and he blinked a few times, stopping in his tracks and turning himself and Jessica toward the shouter.

Oh, it was... ah, what was his name.... Adam. Accented Adam, who sometimes had trouble seeing. And his... wow, this was his girlfriend? David looked between the two, amazed for a moment that Adam, the nearly-blind man, was dating someone... well, someone who looked like a model, to be honest. She was stunning. David could only stare at her, slowly offering his hand toward her for a shake.

"It's... nice to meet you.....?" Why was this a question? He shook his head and remembered his manners. "This is my... date," he choked out. "Jessica Tomás. She works in International Cooperation." The department. Yes. What did Adam's girlfriend do? Did he say his name yet? "I'm David, David Truebridge," he added to himself. "Mysteries."

These ministry parties are always such a delight to Jonathan. He loves going to them to meet new faces and splurge on some quality champagne. The man had his nice suit on. Nothing too extravagant but the fit was just right for him and since it was a masquerade party he put on his mask before entering the atrium. The simpler one of course. His daughter was home for a long break and she helped out in picking out these masks.

Jonathan spotted the table with the beverage and that made his eyes twinkle with glee. Turning his head to lean in near his daughter who is his plus one for this event "I will get some refreshments." he said softly before walking towards it.

When she came home for a vacation going to a masquerade ball where her father works was not something she pictured herself attending but he was good at guilt tripping her and now here she is. She stands right next to him and she plans to stay near him the entire night. Jillian is not good with crowds and especially in a crowd filled with old people. She smiled at the sight of the interior of the place, it is really pretty and lavish. She carefully puts on her mask- the one she picked out yesterday when they went out shopping for her outfit.

As soon as her father excused himself to get some refreshment, Jillian walked around a bit to check the place to try find a good place to sit down for the rest of the party and maybe eat some food. Yep, sounds like an awesome plan.

"Seems like it's been ages since they've worked properly. It's really difficult for those of us who are unable to apparate." Really, what was going on with the transportation department that they couldn't get it fixed? But she did wonder if anyone else was having the same issues that she was since the floos and the toilets and even the lifts weren't quite functional these days.
Sipping idly on her drink Laurel, held on to Aaron’s full glass as she waited for his arrival. What was taking so long, she wondered as she scanned the crowd for his familiar figure. "Did you have a pleasant christmas vacation Luther?" She asked as another woman just casually butted into their conversation just as Laurel had predicted that someone would do. Very pushy and forward Laurel thought before she responded back quietly with a sideways glance up and down at Alphonsine’s attire. "I wouldn’t know much about the floo system being out of order since I’ve been away on maternity leave, but if the floo system is still not working now when everyone is coming back to work, then it will definitely be problematic." Usually she used the lifts to get around and not the floo which seemed to be a very good thing.

SPOILER!!: we love awkward people - Dalton

Tonight, however, the twenty-eight year old clearly had nothing better to do. Or something like that. So here he was, late and looking awkward in a suit, but glad that at least he had the uppermost part of his covered with the simplest of black masks.

Standing in the corner with a drink in hand, Dalton didn't look like he was going to be jumping into conversation any time soon.

Yasmin took her time making her way further into the room. The elaborate gold and green decor was that of a mystical daydream and the live band was so full of exuberance and life. She found herself smiling as she walked across the room, looking up at the walls and all those who were dressed for the occasion. While Yassi usually did not like the restrictive nature of long dresses and suffocating jewelry, it was lovely seeing everyone take part in unison.

She adjusted her mask as she continued to look around. Immediately she spotted a lonely figure in a corner of the room and made her way over with little reluctance. Yassi greeted the unfamiliar man (it was difficult to recognize anybody with the masks) with a warm smile. "You must be waiting for the perfect song before you jump onto the dance floor and show off," her voice showed very little indication that she was teasing, but her eyes gave it away.

SPOILER!!: Henlo, Evelyn

Eyeing her sister's short pink hair with distaste - it would have been better if she'd paired it with a long, dark gown, but no, she'd gone for an eye catching short pink dress in the same vein, and no amount of arguing would change her sister's mind - Evelyn sighed and adjusted her mask. She was still surprised that the first British Ministry of Magic event she was attending was a lavish masquerade ball, complete with a black tie dress code and mood lighting. She could understand the need for showing off - she'd helped arranged a few events like these back home - but why the masks? Surely she wouldn't be the only new employee tonight?

Smoothing down her dress, Evelyn gently nudged her sister away from a cluster of attractively dressed men and towards the tables. She'd set her clutch down and maybe fetch them both a beverage. Hopefully the department heads would introduce themselves in some way or another, so she could in turn convey her gratitude to the Undersecretary for hiring her. Speaking of introductions, the man over there, with the crown, he looked a lot like- Yes. The Minister. A look passed between the Jung sisters, and Evelyn's lip curled in amusement. She was quickly distracted by a blur of bright yellow, and this time she didn't glance at Nari. She didn't want to burst out laughing.

Wiping her away her grin and appearing more cordial, Evelyn left her sister to mingle in peace and made her way to the buffet. This was the part she was most curious - and hopeful - about. As she browsed, the twenty one year old wondered if there was anything further planned for tonight.

Tomasz often felt lonely at such events. He did not enjoy them very much because he did not know who to bring along with him as his plus one and he was never one for noisy events with crowds to begin with. As it was, he also knew that his presence was not optional. There were always increased security needs with large events in the Ministry and due to his job, he was always requested.

He braced himself before entering, slipping his mask over his face and walked along the edges of the atrium. Tomasz bowed his head as he walked by the Minister, quickening his pace and moving to the buffet. He was not very hungry, but he could always eat. Eager to try one of the canapés, he reached to grab one before realizing he had very abruptly interrupted someone's personal space. Still he took the pastry, looking up apologetically as he moved to give her some space. "It looks very tasty," he nodded to the tray of food, hoping that this would be enough of an explanation for his eager interjection.

If only he could find a way to stay in this spot all night, but he didn’t think that was going to be a possibility. He’s chosen the spot for numerous reasons. It was dark. It was out of the way. From it, he could see most of the Atrium.

It might be a party, but he still had a job to do.

Curious.

* ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ *

It was her mask.

He had no idea how she had talked him into this and he had spent practically the entire day reflecting back on this simple thought. He truly, truly, did not want to be here. He did not fancy stepping inside the Ministry again unless it was for business purposes and he fancied even less seeing his former employer. He could barely handle Professor Nutcase before and after...everything...he was certain that his tolerance level was in the minuses.

His own mask clutched in his hand, he said he would attend but had made no promises to actually wear the masked picked out for him, Cox was internally the epitome of discomfort. Something that would perhaps show in the tightness of his shoulders. His jaw always seemed in a perpetual state of being set and clenched, so that was nothing out of the ordinary.

"Yes." An easy answer for an easy question. He was also pointedly ignoring the presence of a dance floor. "Something to drink?" Because he needed one.

Masquerades certainly weren’t high on Simon’s preferred options for starting a new year off at the Ministry of Magic. Masks made identifying people far more complicated then needed and could potentially hide more devious intentions from even the most watchful eye. Not something a security man needs while doing his job. Granted he did promise Ang that he would try and enjoy the evening, but he still felt the need to be even a little on guard as well. They didn’t need any bad surprises along the way as they returned to business as usual after the holidays.

Dressed in simply dark robes, a mask of deep burgundy upon his face that reminded him of a lion, Simon made his way into the atrium that was a far cry from its usual appearance. His gaze still twitching around the area with each step. There was the minister, ever present and always welcoming to his employees and constituents. Clearly noticeable by his behavior. And a flood of other faces that were a mix of both familiar and new. Friends and collegues, including at least one division member of his.

And then there was the man he’d come to know would be the new department head and boss. Judging by his looks Bain was likely just as uncomfortable about the mask part of the evening as he was.

"Good evening Minister....Victoria," Simon greeted as he made his way over to two of his favorite people at the Ministry.

Jane displayed her plate with a shrimp puff, a samosa, and some kind of unidentified dumpling. She was pleased that the Ministry party had included a range of national foods, for she like to try new things. "What departments did you say you worked in?" she asked again; actually she was not sure if they both worked for the Ministry or not. She hoped she was not keeping them from doing other things, out politeness to a stranger.
