Default Hall of Prophecy

The Hall of Prophecy consists of a pearly white antechamber and a vast and dark long room bearing a resemblance to a large warehouse or perhaps a hangar for storing a muggle aircraft. The staggeringly high shelves of the Hall of Prophecy proper form row after dimly lit row of crystal clear and somewhat bright orbs of varying sized. These small glimmering vessels hold valuable prophecies within them only attainable by the person of whom they speak. Due to it's size and the sheer volume of prophecies recorded and stored within the hall, it is not uncommon for Unspeakables stationed in this room to go for long periods through the day without seeing one another.

The antechamber is quite the opposite. Small, bright and circular, the antechamber seems to only have one door - the one which the rotating room showed you when you spoke the name of this Hall. To find the door into the Hall of Prophecy one must know where to look. Lining the walls are egg shaped pods used by those tasked with evaluating and counseling potential and established Seers.

Along with the Time Chamber and Space, this Hall forms the Unspeakable Triangle of Knowledge.

RATTLE RATTLE RATTLE RATTLE.

Orbs filled with precious prophecies began shaking on their shelves, gently trying to break free from their confinements as something begins pulling them towards the Southern most wall of the Hall. In fact, the whole shelves seem to slowly creek their way across the room which causes a few of the orbs to fall to the ground and shatter; their prophecies poofing into nothingness in poofs of white and blue wispy smoke.

Laurel sat at her desk in her own egg shaped pod in the hall of prophecy, furrowing her brows at a collection of new prophecies that she needed to examine and evaluate before she stored them in their orbs and placed them on shelves. It was delicate and time consuming work. In 10 minutes or so the blond seer and prophecy maven had an appointment to meet a potential seer who needed counseling or even was there for their trial. The receptionist had been a bit fuzzy on that fact as well as on the man's name, had it been Lucian or Luther or Luke even? Hopefully Laurel was going to meet someone that was a true seer believer in learning like herself and not a fake.

Luther was still in his first month in the ministry. It was just as exciting and vibrant as he thought it would be, if not more. His department was full of magic and wonder. He failed to compare it to any muggle jobs out there, and heavens know he tried a couple before applying here. The only downside to getting a great job in a great place is having your distant cousin be with you in the same body--no, the same bloody department. He literally could see him every day if this rotation room wasn't so well, uhh, crafted to scatter everyone in their own bubble of mystery.

He didn't really have any pressing issues at work yet during those first few weeks, so he took to venturing around and exploring other rooms. The ones he knew of and assumed he wouldn't be sacked off the bat if he entered. This made the Hall of Prophecy the first destination of today's venturing. Luther stepped into the door to what could be described as the inner space of a dragon egg. He aimlessly walked in the chamber with the egg offices, laying eyes on a lady behind her desk. "Hello, good morning, I'm sorry is this the Hall of Prophecy?" It definitely didn't look like one yet.

Who wasted time on predicting how many grindylows they’d fish out of a particular lake in a month? Laurel shook her head in disgust, discarding the prophecy in the silly pile and leaned back in her chair to relax her eyes for a moment or two. It helped against the dizzyspells she got now and then with her current blessed condition. She was tempted to take a little nap and not tell Airey about it, when she was disturbed by the voice of a man. Oh right, her 9 o’clock appointment by the name of Luke something was here bright and early just as predicted.

Opening her sea blue eyes to look up at him with a professional smile pursing her lips, she clasped her hands together with excitement forgetting that she was a little dizzy and in need desperate need of her one cup of coffee. "A very good morning to you too, are you well versed in interpreting the truth your Inner Eye shares with you?" Laurel wondered. "Or do you still find it a bit scary and embarrassing to believe in what your Eye shows you will happen?" It was asked with curiosity as much as a test of the man's abilities. Laurel had met too many hoaxes that just with dumb luck managed to predict things without really having an inner eye.

Life was good.

It had been a very long time since Adam could say that. His eyesight still sucked, but his hair was its natural black. Both eyebrows were intact, and he wasn’t sporting an odd smell because he hadn’t had a potion explode on him in a while. He’d also made it in and out of the food court without having a panic attack, something he hadn’t been able to do in years.

With nothing pressing to do in the Love Chamber, Adam thought he’d bring Laurel a cup of coffee and catch up with her. He hadn’t gotten the chance to talk to her much at orientation, what with the Fanged Germanium chomping on his backside. He was curious about how her holidays had gone. Friends chatted about things like that right? If nothing else, the coffee should provide a small shield (or distraction) from her sharp tongue.

The coffee in his had was giving off a strong smell to his sensitive nose and he was eager to pass it off to her. He didn’t touch the stuff anymore, not after the incident with Reil. Nope, he had a cup of hot chocolate for himself that he was eager to dig into. ”Laurel?” Adam called out as he entered the room, unaware she had company. Bad eyes remember? He couldn’t see that far away. ”I brought kaffee!“

UHM.

Luther stood there with a dumbfounded look on his heavily bearded face. What? "Uh," his inner eye was telling him he was in the wrong place to be honest but he wasn't going to say that. "I'm not really sure... I listen to my inner eye yet," he chuckled nervously and approached the desk closer now that the woman was talking to him. He didn't want to attract the attention of the other 'eggs' when he was saying all dumb things. "I believe I don't have an inner eye which is why I'm not stationed here." It was better for the wizarding world if he didn't, "I'm, uh, I work somewhere else. Oh sorry, I'm Luth--" He was about to introduce himself when someone else called out.

It was a man that he had seen around before. They hadn't officially met before, but Luther fixed the back of the man's head with a stern look. It was incredibly rude to walk in and talk to the woman Luther was talking to without saying hi or apologizing. And for what? A cup of coffee? Yeah, no.

The bewildered look on the man's face albeit masked by his heavily bearded face was a clue. Another clue that put a pin in the coffin so to speak was when he nervously admitted that he wasn't in touch with his inner eye. A pity Laurel thought to herself. This man was not here for his 9'o clock seer appointment. No matter though. He could be interesting to converse with anyway and predict the future for if he allowed her that courtesy. Maybe she should bring out her cards? Smiling brightly she said with a reassuring hand gesture. "Relax, most people don't ever get in close touch with their Inner Eyes. I apologize if I scared you I just mistook you for my next seer counselling appointment." It couldn't hurt to smooth over any possible bumps in the road.

"I take it you never took divination studies in school?" And the sad fact was that too many lacked the gift. Raising a curious brow at him Laurel asked "Where are you stationed in Mysteries if not in this hall? I'm Lau-" She was about to introduce herself when all of a sudden Adam walked in with a cup of coffee, past the other guy without seeing him there as per his usual. A look over at the other man told Laurel that he wasn't liking the rudeness. Looking over at Adam she smiled warmly "Hi Adam, Is that coffee I'm smelling? You're a lifesaver. I can only drink one cup a day now." Gesturing to the guy standing there too she asked "Adam, have you met?" Realizing she hadn't catched his name she turned to him and asked "Sorry, what is your name?"

Adam heard another voice just after he had announced to Laurel that he had brought her the magic potions that made Laurel tolerable less snarky, aka coffee. He walked up, taking careful steps in case someone had changed the layout of the room from the last time he had been here. ”Sorry I did not know you had company.” Adam looked widely to the left of where Laurel had gestured. The light was different closer to where Laurel was sitting and his eyes didn’t adjust quickly (and sometimes not at all). ”Guten morgen,“. He glanced down at the cup of hot chocolate in his hand. He guessed it was rude not to offer it to the man. “Hot Khocolate?” He held out the cup in offering, although it was no-where near where the man was standing.

Only one cup of coffee? How was he – err Laurel going to survive with only one cup of coffee? He made a mental note to keep away prepare himself for another blow up like they had had in the entry chamber last year. ”Vy is zat?” he asked putting the coffee cup down on her desk.

A seer counselling session? Luther wouldn't mind having a consultation with the woman if she was going to be nice and polite all the way through. Heh heh. Usually, an honest conversation needed someone rude and practical like his cousin so it would be interesting hearing about his third eye from her. Although that wasn't an option anymore with the, uhm, extra man over here.

His accent was thick. "Luther." He assisted Laurel in introducing himself. Also, the man was clearly... half blind? Luther felt bad immediately after he made that assumption. Look at how the man, Adam, was offering the hot cup to the wall. "It's okay, thanks. I've had my morning coffee before I came here." Luther offered a small smile, though he doubted Adam would see??? Why was he not seeing, btw? How rude exactly was it to ask? 6 out of 10 or 10000 out of 10? Where was his brother when he needed a moral consultation...

Divination in school, though? "And no, I didn't. Not really my cup of tea." Which was funny? Because they were having a coffee conversation in parallel? Haha? He was funny? "I'm at the, uhhh," Was he allowed to say where he worked to his colleagues??? He supposed so since they were in the same department. "Love chamber." AHEM. There. Was he going to get fired for saying it out loud?

"It’s fine Adam," Laurel reassured. "I have a 9 o'clock and thought it was Luther here but I was clearly mistaken." Adam didn’t come to visit it her domain in Mysteries that often so he couldn’t know when she might have company. In another time and mood though she probably would be as Adam would put it snarky with him for interrupting, but not this morning. As soon as the coffee cup was set down on her desk she lifted it up to soak in the smell and take a long delicious sip. "Thanks for thinking of me." Over the rim of the coffee mug Laurel raised her eyes to look up at Adam in thoughtful but happy answer. "It’s because of my blessed condition that I can only have one cup of coffee a day." And she wasn’t talking about her seer gifts if you catched her drift?

Turning to the man at Adam’s side that now was declining the coffee. Hadn’t he tried to flirt with her earlier? She was a married woman but she could be flattered that other men thought of her as pretty too. Smiling warmly she said "It’s a pleasure to meet you Luther. I take it that you’ve just started in Mysteries?" He must have started after the break as many other did. "You’re an unspeakable in the Love Chamber. I guess you’re an expert on emotions then? And don't worry Airey won't fire you. He will only do that if you tell someone that doesn't work in Mysteries where you work." Luther had confirmed that he had not taken Divination in school which to her was a big miss for him which she informed him. "You’ve missed out. Divination is a wonderful subject. It leaves you very at peace." unless you got bad omens.

The Department of Mysteries was actually even quieter than David had imagined, and he hardly saw his former Astronomy professor, er, Department Head. But he did enjoy the luxury of working at his own pace and with the very few people who worked in his actual chamber. So far, that was.

None of this explains why he was following Luther Holt into the Hall of Prophecy, however. He was curious about what his so-called cousin was up to when he knew full well that the other man was not a Seer. Did he have a prophecy to deliver? Was he acting on personal business on Ministry time? Didn't Luther work in the...

Ah, yes, he overheard him say Love Chamber to the... pregnant? lady? and smirked to himself. Davie was just curious enough to be lingering, or rather, lurking down a row of orbs near the worker pods. Close enough to overhear their conversation, but not so close as to be heard. Or seen. Probably. He was getting a small tickle in his throat, though, that was irritating the heck out of him. He knew if he coughed it out he'd be just fine. But if he coughed, then he'd give away his hiding spot! What to do!

He coughed lightly into his hand. There. All was fine, he could continue to linger here and eavesdrop until he got bored enough to go back to the Death Chamber.

Blessed condition? Was this some seer’s thing he didn’t understand? Adam was grateful that the man, Luther was it? Didn’t want his hot chocolate because he was busy sipping it now as he tried to figure out exactly what Laurel had meant.

He gave up on deciphering her meaning (he’d just ask Zita about it later) when the other man said something about tea and the Love Chamber. ”Ve do not keep teak in ze Lofe Chamber. Zere vas once a problem vhere it vas mistaken fur a potion – Oh…” He trailed off, realizing the man hadn’t been asking about tea in the room. It seemed that he was merely announcing where he was working. Funny, he didn’t remember Airey saying there were any new potioneers joining the team this year. Then again, Airey had taken to be anti-social a little lately.

Laurel was busy trying to sell Luther on the wonders of divination and Adam might have zoned out a little. Only he had the feeling they suddenly weren’t alone. Funny thing about loosing your eyesight. Both your hearing and sense of smell increased to compensate. He sometimes felt like his ‘inner eye’ as Laurel called it had increased a bit too, but it was more probable that he smelt or heard something that made him aware of…what? He wasn’t sure. So he just kept sipping his hot chocolate while the other two chatted.

Tea? What? Oh, the man was an adorable non-native speaker. Luther waited patiently until the man finished explaining why the tea was now banned in the love chamber. Except he didn't actually finish explaining. "Why? What happened?" This sounded like a really funny story - or really tragic, in any case, it sounded like something extreme.

"Yeah. Just starting this week." He confirmed with a single nod. "I wouldn't call myself an expert--" the slight rise in his chest and smug smile said otherwise. "--but I will be working with the correlation between emotions and magic. Love specifically, which is one multilayered emotion. This is what interested me in the job. Love is so complicated, and it changed the course of history on more than one occasion when it seeped through to one's magical skills. Working and researching something like this is going to be challenging and exciting." What more would a former Gryffindor want from a job, to be honest?

Now Laurel was a fun lady and all but... divination? Luther smiled politely and listened to her explain why this was a glorious art. Science? Nah, it was definitely a sort of art to him. "Right. Maybe. I haven't experienced the peace it brings so maybe that's why I don't comprehend its value properly." Pause. "Is that what you do in this room, then? Do you try to coax the inner eye out of those who consult you?" He gave her a lopsided smile.

Unlike Adam, Luther didn't notice his so-called cousin follow him over here nor was he aware of him eavesdropping yet. He thought he heard something but assumed it was Adam sipping on his hot coffee next to them.

Swedishfish Girl! Madame Librarian! Jess's Soul Sister! Sweetest Swede!

Poor Adam, she could just see how the wheels in his head turned as he tried to decipher what she had meant by 'blessed condition'. She supposed she should tell him to end the mystery but, Laurel didn’t want the entire department to know that she was pregnant. She hadn't shared that information with Airey yet and until she did, she wanted it to be kept a secret. Blinking she raised a curious brow at Adam as he began sharing what could possibly be an interesting anecdote, but then he stopped himself short. Curious Laurel beckoned "Tell us more Adam, what happened with the tea that was mistaken for a potion? Did it cause a messy accident or a headache for Airey?" She could sense that it had the makings of a good story and Luther did too.

Looking over at Luther she noted the smug smile and attempt at modesty that failed miserably in her eyes. Laurel did though zone out just a little when he got going in telling her what made him excited about working with the loveeeeeee emotion. Shaking her head she said kindly "Well it sounds like you will have your love cut out for you Luther. It seems like each of us work with what we are good at and enjoy."

Leaning back in her chair Laurel took a few more sips of coffee heaven as she let her eyes glance around her pod office before they landed again on Luther. "Yes is the short answer. I do my best to coax forth people’s Inner Eyes, but some sadly are lost causes or just not worth my time and energy, and I tell them that." It probably sounded harsh but seering wasn’t for every witch or wizard. It was then that her Inner Eye gave her a tingling sense of being watched, and was that a faint cough?

David's ears were still twitching as he tried to eavesdrop on his relative and the other two employees. Wait, what? Why had the one guy trailed off? Had he been discovered?! He shoved his hands in his pockets, fretting about whether he should go introduce himself to the group or if he should just walk off now.

But the talk, particularly from his cousin, who was rambling on and on about love and emotion and their connections to history or whatever, honestly made Davie let out a snort. An audible chortle-snort of disagreement. He didn't disagree with Laura, or whatever her name was, the pregnant Seer lady. Some people just didn't possess any prowess whatsoever for Divination. He, of course, had excelled in that subject, as in all of his subjects. So. It must suck to be average like everyone else, but especially average and emotional like Luther. It sucked to be him the most, Davie decided, idly pulling his hand out of his pocket and reaching out toward one of the prophecies in front of him.

.........no! He caught himself just in time before his fingers brushed against it, remembering in a hurry what happened to anyone who touched a prophecy that wasn't about them. He shoved his hand back in his pocket again, turning and rapidly walking a few paces away from that orb in particular and instead toward the end of the aisle, leaning out a little and glancing down in the direction of the group near him.

He'd just... wait for them to move along or turn their backs to him, or something, and then he'd escape this room.

”Vell,” he said slowly trying to decide if the two really wanted to hear the reason tea was no longer allowed in the Love Chamber, of if they were just being polite. He had of course, brought up the subject only because he had misunderstood the conversation. ”Someone took a Hiccupping Solution fur tea undt it vas a veek before ve knew vhat vas causing ze man’s hiccups.” He’d gotten really good at the counter-charm for hiccups as a result. Sure, the story could have been funnier, but Adam was not a good story-teller. Sorry guys!

His new chamber-mate seemed very excited about love. Adam wasn’t really sure if that was a good thing. It could lead to problems with the Amortentia potion. Love could be rather addicting, or so he’d found with his own research (even if he only recently had come to personally understand said research). ”Be careful around ze fountain,” he cautioned swirling his cup of hot chocolate which was starting to cool off. He would need to finish it soon or rewarm it with a charm, but then it never really seemed to taste the same when he did that.

There was the noise again; this time it sounded an awful lot like a snort. He tiled his head to the side as the Luther and Laurel continued to chat about Divination and inner eyes and other stuff. ”Laurel,” he said interrupting them. ”Zey fixed ze mail ja?” Maybe the memos were running amuck again. It couldn’t have been owls, because he hadn’t smelt them or almost killed himself by tripping over one on the stairs. Then there was something that sounded a lot like footsteps. Either they had guests or the chamber had mice. ”I zink, ve haf guest.” Adam said, tilting his head so his ear was in the direction the sound had come from.

Catherina walked into the Hall of Prophecy expecting the usual mixture of pseudo-silence, and the same odd clinking noise that the orbs usually made. It was her first day back and she was looking forward to a little normalcy. But so far, she had almost been run over by a speeding owl on the way down to level 9, almost knocked over by the same speeding owl, heading away from level 9, and had almost slipped on a bunch of pellets and features that the owl had left behind in its wake at the revolving entry chamber.

It was shaping up to be a truly odd day.

And clearly, it was going to be even weirder. Walking into the chamber, her eyes absolutely nothing.

No one, no other unspeakables walking around, no owls delivering messages.
Nothing.

She then turned and walked out of the room. Where could everyone had gone?

Ah, but the Unspeakable would have been mistaken in thinking she was entirely alone in the Hall of Prophecy.

Heavy steps echoed throughout not five minutes after the woman had left, though it would be a grave error to assume there was any Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum-ing going on around here. Or was it?

A mass in the dark, a dull thud to a shelf, the ping of orbs striking the ground and rolling along it, the crunch of those same orbs shattering as it was crushed beneath those same heavy feet...

"Forgot my purse!" Catherina announced to no one in particular as she half-ran, half-walked back into the antechamber to grab the purse that she had forgotten on the ground in her attempt to rid herself of any owl feathers that may have attached to her head at her collision with the owl earlier.

She crouched down to grab her bag, then straightened up to look around the antechamber, just to make sure that she hadn't missed anything, when the sight that greeted her made her blood run cold.

Broken glass were strewn around the chamber, with more being located around the entrance to the chamber itself, wispy white smoke - prophecies - lingered around their respective orbs, slowly disappearing into the air at the absence of their containers. Some orbs looked like they survived the fall, but they too looked worse for wear.

Did a shelf collapse or something?

Removing her wand from its holster and holding it protectively in front of her, Catherina slowly walked towards the main entrance of the Hall of Prophecy, her heels clicking loudly, echoing around the cavernous hall.

"Intruders are not allowed in the Department of Mysteries" She announced loudly, her voice carrying across the hall. She then waved her wand at the open expanse of the hall and said "Homenum revelio"

Jane was still shaking off the dizziness of the spinning walls of the Entry Chamber when she groped for the handle of the door in front of her and stepped through it. As her vision settled, she looked around, puzzled--surely this small, white, circular room was not Mr. Flamsteed's office? She stepped slowly into the room and felt something crunch under her boot. Glass? What was going on here?

She looked up at the room again and saw a small blonde witch looking scared out of her mind, holding her wand in a slightly shaking hand. Jane immediately pulled out her own wand and stepped a little closer. "Do you need help?" she murmured in a low voice, trying not to startle her any further.

Catherina turned at the sound of someone approaching, followed by a murmur behind her. Keeping her focus on the empty hall entrance, she whispered back "Help would be nice. Something is inside the chamber, destroying prophecy orbs and its not human." She would know, she had cast hominem revelio earlier and she was horrified to find that the hall was empty of humans.

But there was something definitely in there.

"I'm Catherina by the way" She said, half glancing at the woman. If they were going to risk their lives together, they might as well be on a first name basis, right?

"Jane Howard, Death Chamber alchemist, first day on the job, haven't even reported in yet," Jane answered, still in the same low voice so as not to alert whatever was in the Hall of Prophecy. "The Entry Hall dropped me off her instead of Flamsteed's office, so I guess it thought you could use the help, too." She moved closer behind Catherina and kept her wand ready.

Yes, Homenum Revelio was a wise first move. The bread and butter to an Unspeakable when it came to security on Level 9. One pitfall of the spell was that it was only efficient on other human presences.

There was nothing to be discovered without venturing further inside. In fact, the heavy footsteps seemed to be moving further and further away...deeper inside...

"It thought right." She replied. Just as she was about to say something else, heavy footsteps thudded from inside the Hall, growing distant with each step. No time for chitchat. Something was wrecking her prophecy orbs. "Let's go!" She called out to Jane as she sprinted into the Hall of Prophecy. Why did she think it was a good idea to wear heels today?

Catherina followed the sound, turning right and left, and going straight, depending on where the sound echoed most from. She occasionally shot non-verbal jinxes into blind turns before turning. It seemed like it had moved to the back of the chamber, but she couldn't be sure.

Where was this thing leading her? And what was waiting for her at the end of this chase?
