Syd Wordsmith's Office - Department Head Department Head ~ Syd Wordsmith The walls are high with bookshelves filled with books on both Magical and Muggle law. There's a plant on one of the shelves, a few pictures of Syd and a few big wig clients, and plenty of awards for excellence in prosecuting. The big desk stands at the back of the room, surrounded by shelves and there is a faint scent of honey in the air. |
A succession of quick raps on the door to the office reverberates around the room and the door knob turns almost ominously. "Hello, Syd," Nicoli Vanhatck's young, brunette mop of hair emerges from behind the door. His azure eyes glittered as he stepped into the room and closed the door behind him. "You wanted to see me?" Midnight blue robes swished around him as he stood to the center of the room, somewhat unwilling to be so bold as to take a seat. Nicoli was excited. It had been overwhelming to hear that his application had been excepted and now he stood in the ministry itself, a division head. Could have used a larger desk, the oddly timed thought leaped into his head, making his eyes gleam ever so slightly. |
Forrester knocked on the door and turned the knob. "Hello Sid, you needed me?" Forrester asked as he steped inside the office. "Oh hey Nicoli... How have you been?" he asked as he approched his collegue. |
Syd looked up, ready to stand up and open the door, but it appeared that two employees had already found their way into his office. He stood up anyway and nodded to both men. "Vanhatck and Hufflepuff. Nice to see you both," he said in his smooth, Southern drawl. His dark blond hair shimmered in the light of the room, his red, silk shirt following suit. It was no wonder this guy had been a Gryffindor. "I've got your case files," he said, reaching into a drawer of his desk to pull out a couple of folders. "Let's see here." He flipped through them a second before holding one in each hand out to the men. The manila folders each had their names on them and contained a few sheets of paper. "Na' I trust you both can take these tasks on with these new employees," he said, eyebrows raised and casting an intense gaze to both men. |
Erin O'Connor knocked on Syd's door softly then, upon hearing Ray and Nicoli's voices, smoothed her beige Chanel suit and entered the well-appointed room. "Good Morning Gentlemen." She smiled softly. "You wished to see me Syd?" She asked. |
Syd looked over the two men's shoulders at Erin who had just come in. She was rather smartly dressed. It was the first day after all and he had to admit that, as the only female member of their managerial team, she probably wanted to promote such. Though what did he know? "Ms. O'Connor," he said, the "or" almost an "ar" sound. "I was just handing Hufflepuff and Vanhatck their assignments. I'll get yours in a sec'nd." |
"Very good I will start my assignements right away..." Forrester replied as he turned around ready to leave. His new golden and black wizard robes were a bit more easy to walk in then the previous ones. "Oh! Syd do you need a full report on the end of every mission?" he asked before exiting the department head office. |
Before Nicoli had a chance to reply to Forrester he noticed Syd rise and shot him a sincere smile instead. Vanhatck? In a formal mood today was he? "Like wise," he replied simply his eyes glittering as he profiled the man. Proud, efficient. Nicoli stepped forwards to take the folder out of Syd's hands, and scanning the few pages he replied confidently, "Of course, sir," Nicoli smiled. Sir. His formalities only went so far. At that he followed his superior's gaze towards the door and took in Erin O'Conner. Professional, somewhat...nervous? Or just soft spoken. He approved of the suit, though of course slightly too muggle for his taste. He smiled at her as well, his eyes still glimmering, and turned back to Syd after hearing Forrester's question. He'd like to know the answer to that one himself. |
Erin Smiled. "Actually it's Miss." She told her boss. She took in her colleagues. Both were dark headed, and wore Robes, one of Midnight blue, the other of black and yellow, she responded to the smile of the wizard in blue with a smile of her own. "Yes sir." She responded to Syd, taking a seat and crossing her legs demurely, to patiently wait. |
Syd turned his gaze from Erin to the two men. He smiled a bit and slipped his hands into his dark brown pants pockets. "Uh, yes. Yes, a report would be immensely helpful, thank you," he said, nodding to each of them before moving around behind his desk. The bottom drawer of his desk was still open so he reached in a pulled out a few files. Each of them had Erin's name on it and each one was designated for each of the "desk" job divisions. He handed them to the seated woman and smiled. "Alright, Miss O'Connor," his drawl once again somewhat emphasizing her last two letters. |
Not having found anyone in the main office Trism Braun, sporting his newest set of trademark teal robes and peddling a tray of freshly baked cupcakes bobbed through the door to the Department Head's office. "Cupppppppppp cakkkkessss! Get Yer Cupcakes! Oh - sorry, didn't realize you were in the middle of a meeting." He grinned - a bit sheepishly, well, sheepishly for Trism. |
Syd looked up from Erin this time. It seemed like everyone was going to end up in his office at some point and quite possibly all at the same time. The man seemed be peddling cupcakes though. Maybe he was from the cafeteria? His robes, though, weren't those of a chef's though. "Well, uh, come on in," he said to the man. "I wasn't expecting any kin' of baked goods, but... Say, do I know you from somewhere?" |
He pointed to the ID badge dangling from his breast pocket. "Probably seen me around. I spent a lot of time in the oblivator lunch room." He smiled and slipped the tray of teal frosted cupcakes in front of the man's nose. "Enjoy a cupcake. And you to, of course!" he said motioning to the girl standing nearby |
It appeared his name was Trism. Interesting name. Syd liked it though. And his last name... Braun? He recalled reading an article about a Braun crup farm winning another award for breeding. Perhaps this young man was one of those Brauns. Syd picked up a cupcake and took a bite. It... wasn't exactly... moist. Heck, it may not have even been cake. "Leapin' lizards, man! What the heck is in these things?" he said, wiping his tongue with a napkin. Hopefully Erin's was better. |
"Oh the usual you know," He set the plate down and started counting off ingredients on his well manicured fingers. "Flour, sugar, salt, vanilla, brown sugar..." He trailed off not remembering any of the other ingredients. "I made the frosting myself too." At that comment he rocked backwards on his feet clasping his hands behind him grinning broadly. |
"Right, well, I'd check my measurements if I were you. These things are drier than the desert and about as flavorful as an old tube sock... eh... no offense," he said, turning the cupcake around in his hand. He set it down on his desk and looked to Trism. If he ever pulled the man's name in a Christmas lottery, he'd be sure to get the man a cookbook. The man had obviously used the right ingredients, but the proportions were a little off. |
"Dry? Tasteless?" Trism's smile evaporated from his face as he snatched one up and promptly bit into it. "Mmm....I bet I needed that 3rd egg." He ran a finger through the frosting and then popped it into his mouth. "Mmmm...well, the frosting came out! And it's teal! Isn't that fabulous?" |
"Yes, the frosting... did..." he said as the man mentioned the color and it being fabulous. Syd's eyebrows furrowed as he re-read the man's badge. Department of Mysteries. He had heard the Unspeakables were quirky. Though fabulous frosting? "Right, well. Next time I've got something that needs icing, I'll call ya, Braun. Say, you related to the Braun's who run that crup farm? They're pretty famous aren't they?" |
"That would be my family yes. Although mum and Da' do all the cruppy raising. And my little brother's helping. Why do you ask? I don't expect there's another batch until spring so I can't hook you up with a deal. Sorry." He continued to eat the frosting off the cupcake with his finger. |
"Oh, no, no, I don't need a crup. I was just wondering what with your name bein' Braun and all," he said, motioning to the badge. Syd clapped his hands together and smiled. A famous acquaintance. Well, a family member of the famous anyway. Sadly he wouldn't be spilling any secrets since he was an Unspeakable. Syd despised not being able to know everything that was going on, but he'd have to deal somehow. |
"Yep, we Braun's stick together." It was perhaps a bit ironic that a Braun like Trism didn't own a crup himself. He thought about it for a moment then shrugged it off like he always did. Too busy, which was his usual response. He finished of the frosting on the cupcake. "Well, I guess I should head back to work." He chuckled a bit. Making references to the Brain Room where he worked was always a fun past time of his. |
"Work, yes," he nodded to the man. Off to the mysterious level 9 where Syd couldn't go. The courthouses were right next door and he was often in those every day of the week, hoping one day he could go into the department not too fall off. Of course it wasn't possible. "I suppose I've got some stuff to attend to myself," he said to Trism. "Nice meetin' you though." |
"You too mate!" He grabbed Syd's hand (which probably wasn't in the air for a handshake) and shook it. "Have a great day." He smiled and then picked back up his tray of cupcakes. As he walked out the door he wondered. What lunchroom would have the most people in it? I wanna hand out cupcakes... And with a loud bellowing "CUPPPPPP CAAAKKKESSSSS!" Trism walked out of Syd's office. |
Nicoli tried hard to stifle a chuckle, his eyes shinning out of his face like a light beam. "Strange man," he said to no one in particular. This Trism was...an over enthusiastic type, a little bit...what is the word? Bold, maybe? "I'll just be getting these to the others," he said smiling, holding up the folders and he slipped quietly out of the door. A swish of his robes and quiet snap of the door and he was gone, chuckling slightly. |
Erin had been just about to speak when the young man came in hollering about cupcakes. To be nice, she took one but she took one look at it and Just held it till she could throw it away. "Thank you Sir." She said to Syd, I will get my employees on these right away." she smiled then exited the office. |
Syd ran a hand through his mane of hair, nodding to his coworkers. It was an odd occurrence with an odd man, but not unpleasant... save the cupcakes. "Yes... rig..." he started, but they were already gone. |
A scroll zoomed into the office and landed on the department heads desk. Quote:
|
Erin knocked on Syd's door. She really needed to discuss some things with him. |
Syd unfolded the airplane that landed on his desk. Yet another case. And so soon too. The new people sure had their hands full. "Lovely..." he said to himself as Erin walked in. "Yes, Miss O'Connor? You need me for something." |
Just a quic question Syd. "You know that assignment I'm working on concerning the students at Hogwarts and their made-up charms and spells? Well I just got word that the Committee on Experimental Charms is on the same mission, and was wondering how you wanted me to approach them. Also I felt bound to tell you that my Misuse of Muggle artifiacts employees never bothered to show up today nor did Miss Watson." Erin said, after sitting down. |
"Ah, yes the list. Well I say if Experimental Charms is workin' on it too, get together with their head and start workin' together. More heads on the case, the better," he said, getting up from his desk. "As for Miss... Watson, was it? I'd say give her another day before sending an owl. She might be on holiday or somewhere without a good means to communicate," he said with a clasping of his hands. "Now if you'll excuse me, I've got an appointment of level six." He gave Erin a small pat on the back and helped her out of the room before heading down the hall to the lifts. Hopefully they'd at least get someone to go after this Floor fellow... Hufflepuff seemed to be taking everyone out on the warehouse mission... |
Alison walked to the Department Head's office. She felt that if he was the Department Head, she needed to introduce herself before the actual work began. She knocked three times and asked, "Hello? Mr. Wordsmith?" She said, peeking her head in. OOC: I'll be back on as soon as I can. |
Syd noticed someone heading toward his office and turned around to let her in. She didn't look familiar, but she had business with him it seemed. "Uh, yes, right this way," he said, opening the door for her and letting her enter first. |
"Hello, Mr. Wordsmith. I'm the new Liason to this department." Alison explained herself before coming inside the office. It seemed comfortable and she knew she was going to be in here several times. "I just felt that I had to familiar myself with you." She kept the tone light, surveying the office. There was a lot of paperwork. |
Syd walked around his desk and sat down behind it. He sat back in his chair, crossed his legs, and folded his hands in his lap. Liason huh? Well he supposed the Ministry needed this kind of stuff, though he usually handled everything on his own... "Ah, yes. I figured I'd need to be working with... someone," he said, nodding. "Glad you could make it here so early." |
"Thank you. And my name is Alison Raine-LaRousse. I already know your name though, Mr. Wordsmith." She replied curtly. She felt... Well, there was no other word for it other than puny. She was barely 5 feet and the man must have been much more than that. She was also very miniscule in weight too, having suffered a weight condition before. He also seemed slightly intense, ready to attack if a problem came up. Alison was a bit intimidated by people like this. |
"Right, yes. Miss LaRousse. Well, I'll try to make things relatively painless," he smiled. "Though, I think Minister Cooper should probably know I'll be in court a lot. I don't plan on stopping with my prosecution duties." He pulled his quill and red ink back out and smiled to the small woman. He was obviously scaring her, but he wasn't sure how to stop that. She'd probably get used to it and just might toughen up after working with him. |
"Hello Syd" Forrester said after he knocked on the door and entered. "I'm glad to inform you that I'm done with the training for the warehouse mission... I think I will head to the warehouse with my team... Oh and I have borrowed a Hit Wizard and a Magical Law Enforcement guy for more backup... Here is a list of the employees on the mission... Quote:
Forrester handed the piece of paper to his Department head. "The other thing I wanted to talk about is the new mission with the department of transportation... I was just wondering have you decided on a the day the conference will take place?" Forrester asked. |
Alison listened carefully. Court? Prosecution? She was a bit confused. Maybe she'd ask the senior undersecretary about what he was talking about. But then another man entered and started talking about a mission or something. She remembered the assignment. "Mr. Wordsmith, you might know that the minister's wedding is soon. He wished to have the tightest security possible at the wedding and that the best Hit Wizards and Aurors be protecting him and his wife at all times. He doesn't wish to have criminals lurking in the crowds, as there will be many people invited to the wedding." She relayed to him, as this was a very important task. |
Syd looked up from Miss LaRousse at Forrester. So many people and yet so little time. One thing had to be done at a time. "Yes, thank you Forrester. I'm handling Level 6 and I don't think we'll need our Aurors on that one. I'm going to go meet with the Floo Network people," he said, taking the list of people from him. "Na', Miss LaRousse... Minister Cooper wants us to be security at his wedding you say?" He folded his hands on his desk and pursed his lips together. Apparently Minister Cooper felt that he needed top police for his little party when the teams were still too small to handle it. Though, it would be good training he supposed. Aurors though? For a wedding? "I'm willing to supply Hit Wizards and Law Enforcement Squad Officers, but I'm not so sure about Aurors." |
"Yes, sir." Alison said, watching her tone. She didn't want to sound like a military person. She watched his face carefully and stayed calm when he said he wasn't so sure about Aurors. "Well, that was what was required in the assignment note. He said he wanted the best Hit Wizards and Aurors." She said again, carefully choosing each word. "I'll speak to the minister and see what I can do." She said, getting up. "I will see you soon, Mr. Wordsmith." She said, with a straight face. |
Syd smiled to the woman and got up to see her out. He led her to the door and opened it for her politely. "See you soon, Miss LaRousse. I hope Minister Cooper understands," he said smiling. He returned to his desk and jotted some notes down in a planner. Sure Minister Cooper was important. The most important in fact. But the Hit Wizards were perfectly capable of handling the situation and Syd knew that if the Aurors were stuck at the wedding, they wouldn't be on call for... something big. Though Cooper was, no doubt, going to force him to send Aurors. |
Angus lightly knocked on the Department Head's door and entered. "Sir, I'm so sorry I've been away so long. I had to go to my home town for my great aunt's funeral." He explained as he neared Syd's desk. He sat, "Honestly," He lowered his voice as if she could hear him, "I didn't really want to go, and I never cared for that ol' battle-axe. She was a vile woman. But my mother loved her dearly for some reason and was a nervous wreck, not to mention a basket case. She needed me." Angus looked down at his lap and up at Syd again, "So what have I missed?" |
Alison stopped to catch a breath and regained posture. She had walk-jogged all the way here and she really needed to talk to Mr. Wordsmith about this wedding of a nightmare it was causing her. She had to arrange who was going to be there to guard the minister and the guests and whatnot. Also, she needed to discuss the Auror matter. She knocked on the door and hoped he would be there. |
Syd turned and looked to the man that had entered his office. It was his missing judge. Normally, he'd show some displeasure at the lack of waiting, but Syd liked judges. He was a lawyer after all. "Quite alright, McNeerly," Syd said, sitting back in his chair. "We all get trapped in things we don't want to do. I understand completely. Besides, we haven't apprehended anyone yet so we haven't gone to court yet." He looked up as a familiar light knocking was heard on the door. "One moment," he told Angus. "Come in!" |
Alison straightened up. She walked in, her heels making a familiar kind of click, click. "Hi, Mr. Wordsmith. Is this a bad time?" She asked, noting the other male in the room. Her face told another story, though. This was really urgent, as the meeting is in a couple days, and her assignment was due soon, and ecetera, ecetera, ecetera. There were also several details she needed to take care of. |
"No, no, Miss LaRousse," Syd said, motioning for her to sit down. "I take it this is about the wedding?" He reached into his desk and pulled out a folder as he waited for Alison to sit down. Giving in wasn't something he did often, but he was going to have to this time. "Miss LaRousse, this is Judge McNeerly," he smiled. |
"Thank you." Alison said, carefully placing herself apon the chair. "Yes, it is. We need to discuss the security matters - also, about the aurors..." She said, carefully weaving the web. Alison listened to the introduction and smiled politely. "Pleasure, Judge." She smiled a delicate smile, not wanting to be rude. |
"Yes the... Aurors are not as busy as I thought they would be," he said, opening the folder with the Auror profiles. "So I suppose I can let them go." He pulled out a planner and smiled to Alison. The last time she was in the office, she was pretty scared of him... well at least he thought so. This time he tried to be as polite as possible. |
Alison smiled, while screaming excitement inside. "Thank you, Mr. Wordsmith." She said. "Now, the minister needs to know which aurors and hit wizards are going to be there, so..." She said. So I can finish this assignment, Alison thought. "I'd appreciate it if you could supply a list of the people who are going to act as security there, at the wedding." She added, smiling. |
"Well, we're still a bit understaffed, so I'll send all of 'em," he said, his drawl tapering out as he flipped through the folder on his desk. He pulled out his thick, dark wood wand and tapped a sheet of parchment. The wand was almost gavel-like... He pushed the new list toward Alison and sat back. Quote:
|
Alison smiled politely, and she was screaming and hopping in joy inside. "Thank you very much, Mr. Wordsmith. This will help me out a lot." She said. She reached forwards and took the list, studying the list carefully. She noted that there were only seven people and resisted the temptation of raising an eyebrow. She instead said, "Well, I'd best be off to make the report. Again, thank you." She said, getting up. She smiled, and left the office, her heels again making the clicking noises, as she exited. |
Syd sat back and shook his head as she left. The Minister probably wasn't going to be too happy with 7 people, but it's all he had. If the Minister had a problem with it- he'd have to find Syd more Aurors and Hit Wizards. |
Quote:
When it did he said, "Thank you for understanding, Sir." With that, he stood straight as an arrow, "Well, that's really all I needed for now. Hope everything gets worked out properly." Angus gave him a respectful nod and headed out the door, headed for his office. |
Erin knocked on Syd's door after a long day, she needed to fill him on on some things and ask him a quick question that was all |
Syd nodded to Angus as he exited the room. Yet another good judge. He had sure lucked out... Lucked out indeed. Syd was then about to put a file back into his desk when he heard another knock. "Come in," he said, getting comfortable. |
Erin entered the room. "Hey boss, I wanted to ask you do you know where I can find an obliviator for the Cardiff Sting? And also I needed to tell you I reviewed all my employees and Miss Todd has accepted the position as my assistant." |
"Obliviators are on Level 3. Ask for Ivan Callistus, he'll help you out," Syd said, folding his hands. The position of assistant had been filled pretty quickly too. That was good at least. Erin was the one person around the office who really needed one. "Just make sure Miss Todd knows what she's getting into," Syd chuckled. |
"Thanks Boss!" Erin happily closed the Dorr and went to Level 3 |
Edward gets off the lift and walks down the hall. He needs to find the Office of the head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. Edward needs to check in. The color of the walls and the carpet are the same as they were 13 years ago. "Some things never change." At the end of the hall is an enpressive door with large gold lettering on it. Syd Wordsmith's Office, Department of Magical Law Enforcement "This must be the place." Edward knocks on the door. |
A small owl flew through the door without warning and dropped a note on the desk, and flew back out the door. The note said the following. Quote:
|
"Come in," Syd said as whoever it was outside knocked on the door. His office was rather busy. The door was going to get warn through with all the knocking that was going on. Maybe he could just leave it open... no, no that would be bad. He picked up the note on his desk and read it with a sigh. Now he had to pick Aurors and MLEs. His job was never done. |
Edward takes a seat and waits until Mr. Wordsmith had finished with the memo. "Hello, I'm Edward Lestrange. I asume you know I've been reassigned from the training camp to Auror Headquarters." Edward puts his file on the desk. He can't help put stare at Woodsmith. He looks way to young to be head of the department. It was going to take a little getting used to have superiors so much younger than him. |
Erin got off the lift and walked straight to syd's office. She hated to have to approach him again twice in one day, but she felt that she needed to report this. She probably looked like she hadn't slept for days but that was simply out of worry for her niece and nephew. |
Syd smiled to Edward and picked up the file. Yes, the Auror Training Camp fellow. He'd be of good use these days. The file closed as Erin came into view through the partially opened door. "Yes, Lestrange, I'm quite excited to have you here," he said, drawl growing a little stronger as he was now a tad bit tireder than he was earlier. "Come on in Miss O'Connor," he said before she even got a chance to knock. |
Edward turns around to see a woman standing at the door. He gets up and opens it for her. |
Erin smiled at the young man and extended her hand to shake his. "Hello I'm Erin O'Connor." She smiled then turned to Syd. "Syd I've got a bit of a problem. Earlier today a young man from Level 7 brought me up a biting teapot. Then he told me his boss had a letter that accompanied it. So I went to 7 to get the letter for forensic testing and was able to recover it, but the gentleman a Mr. Theo, would not allow me to get the fingerprints of himself nor the other known employee to have touched the letter without a note from you. |
Siobhan knocked on the door harshly and in rapid succession. She really hoped he was there. It didn't matter if he was busy, at least not to her. She was not one to be kept waiting. Besides, she was eager to get out on the field already and she couldn't do that until she got the list. She stood there, arms crossed and scowl on her face, and waited. |
"Nice to me you, Miss O'Connor. You really don't need permission from the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement to ask Ministry employees to subject to finger printing. According to the Magical Law Code Section 5, subsection 37, Magical Law Enforcement personal may ask witches or wizards to submit to finger printing without requiring prior authorization from the head of their department. Section 3, Subsection 6 does state that any witch or wizard has the right to refuse to search of himself and/or his property, interrogation, finger printing, or any other forensic technique that would be in violation of their human rights. The Law Enforcement Officer can request the head of their department issue a warrent requiring said witch or wizard to undergo said forensic testing providing there is proof that carrying out said test will aid in that Magical Officers investigation. My advise would be to inform the individuals of their rights, and also inform them that the Head of Magical Law Enforcement can request the Head of their Department to suspend the employees without pay until such time as they comply with said warrent. I would also tell them it can take several weeks to get said warrent processed. I think that will help them decide to cooperate with you. After all it's only a a biting tea pot. Hardly worth all the paper work involved in getting a warrent." OOC: Edward Lestrange is 47 years old. |
"Yes, what Lestrange here said," Syd said, folding his hands on his desk. "I see no reason as to why we can't collect prints, but if this person really does not want to do so, we can find a way in which to connect the person to what's going on and get the prints. The refusal is only going to backfire in this case." He looked behind Erin and saw someone else back there at the door. Now who was it that needed him? Yes, the office was big, but it wasn't meant for so many people. He still needed to come up with the list for the Minister... "Miss O'Connor, would you be so kind as to ask the woman behind you what is that she needs?" |
"I agree. It seems strange this Mr. Theo doesn't want to cooperate in the investigation. If someone had sent me a biting tea pot, I certainly would want to know who sent it and why. It might be a good idea to look a little more closely at Mr. Theo's background. He may be hiding something." Edward looks at the door and sees another woman waiting to come in. He gets up and moves over to a corner to allow the women enough chairs to sit in. |
Siobhan decided she did not feel like waiting anymore and so she just walked in, ignored everyone in the room and walked right up to Syd. "Me and a teammate are doing an investigation on the missing gold and we think it may be someone who is experienced in ministry tactics. We need a list of all former ministry employees that either have a grudge against it or were dishonorably discharged", she said quickly and firmly, her thick, Russian accent hanging in the air. "Preferably today", she added for good measure. |
Syd stood up, hands place flat on his desk. He leaned in to look at Siobahn, rather displeased. His eyebrows furrowed and his voice got low. "First off, Miss Smirnov," he said, tone shifting from tired to mildly angry. "You are allowed to enter, but you have to wait your turn. Secondly, I don't have that kind of list. In fact, I don't have that information. We can set up a petition to get something from the Minister, which I'm sure would be a far easier." He stood back up from leaning on his desk and shook his head. "Or since you seem to be good at barging in, why don't you go snoop around the Ministry. Ah, better yet, get someone else to do it," he said, nodding to her. "Is that clear?" |
Erin glanced up at Siobahn unbelieving. This young woman sure had it coming to her if she refused to be respectful. But rather than stick around for the fireworks, erin Backed out of the room. "Thank you gentlemen for the help." |
Edward can't get over the gaul of this new woman. Insupordination of the first order. This Miss Smirov can't be an auror. With that kind of attitude, she would have been thrown off the island after the first week. "If I may intervene, you should check with the employment office, Miss Smirov. I believe they keep records on all ministry employees. They should be able to give you a list of employees who have quit or been fired. As far as disgruntled employees, you should chat with members of the individual departments. They would know more about their fellow employees than Mr. Wordsmith." Edward knew he should have stayed on the island. How is he ever going to fit in with this lot? He's probably already alienated the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, and he hasn't officially started work yet. |
Siobhan listened to Syd with only mild distaste. She smirked at him then, and turned around, ready to leave. No point in wasting her breath talking to this man if he wasn't going to be helpful. She suddenly heard another voice and turned over to look at the man whom it belonged to. She gave him a small nod as she spoke. "Thank you. At least someone in this office has been helpful." With that, she turned and walked out pretty much as quickly as she'd walked in. She had work to do, after all. |
Edward takes a seat in front of Mr. Wordsmith's desk. "Is it always like this?" |
"At least today it is," he said to Edward before sitting back down. "I'm going to have to talk with Vanhattck about that one. I take it punishment would be administered at the camp you worked at, Lestrange?" He leaned back in his seat, trying to think of who to send to the wedding and how to deal with that rude woman. He was also going to have to deal with the Flooing case in court pretty soon. |
Yes, if one of the trainees had talked to me like that, they would have been restricted to their room when not training for about a week. Aurors have to be able to obey orders if they're going to survive. I don't remember how things work at the Ministry. I didn't spend much time in the office when I worked here." |
"Well," Syd said, pulling out a sleek quill and some parchment. "We're still currently a tad understaffed so I can't confine anyone just yet." He scribbled down a few names and tapped the quill on the desk in thought. Had he known that that woman was so... intense... he would have been prepared. Thankfully Lestrange was around. "But she appeared to listen to you, Lestrange," he said, still looking at his list. His eyes glanced up at the man, casting that odd aura Syd had upon the room. "You're a good man, Lestrange," was all he said before looking back down. |
"Thank you, sir. I'm just doing my job." |
"True," he said, signing the sheet of parchment he was writing on. "Doesn't change my opinion either way." He set the parchment aside to dry and cleaned off his quill. Setting it inside his desk, he rolled his neck a bit and rested in his plush chair. "Hopefully the day I'm in court, no one will need me," he said sarcastically. |
"I doubt you'll be disturbed when you're in court. I've been in the Wizengamot. No one in there right mind would go down there unless they had to. It's a scary place to be especially if you're the one on trial. |
"Oh I know, I know. But," he said, jerking his thumb toward the prosecutor awards behind him, "I've got things covered." He smiled a bit and sat back in his chair. Court was far less tiring than running the department. It was just going to take some time to get used to it like the courtroom did. |
"Oh you're a prosecutor with the Wizengamot. I thought you were an auror too." Edward just assumed the head of the department would be an auror too. |
"Oh no, no," Syd said, getting up to adjust a plaque. "I don't book 'em, I argue in court and get 'em locked up." He chuckled a bit before turning back to Edward. Leaning on his chair a bit, he squinted his eyes with a little smirk. "No one ever said the head always had to be an auror," he chuckled. |
Edward can't take his eyes off the award Mr. Wordsmith seems so proud of. The last time he sat this near a prosecutor; he was trying to put him away in Azkaban for life. It was only by the grace of God and a good barrister that he's sitting here today. "No, there isn't. The Head of the Department when I joined the aurors was an auror too. I guess I thought they all had been. Like I said I haven't had much contact with the Ministry in a long time." |
Syd drummed his hands on his chair and nodded. It was understandable the way Edward thought. He was sure he was going to get turned down for the job to an Auror who had proved him or herself, but apparently a lawyer was better suited. "Say, Lestrange, you ever work with lawyers?" |
Edward smiles remembering the lawyers on the island. They were nice enough, but most of them were stuff shirts. "I worked with a few, respected most of them, and even liked some. The Island generally has at least one attorney on staff. He generally teaches Magical Law. Never had a chance to get to know any of them too well. Once they discover the Island isn't a five star hotel with spa, they generally bide their time until their rotation. The Ministry generally rotates the lawyers about every two years." |
Syd nodded and walked around his desk to a small table-cabinet like that in the break room. He picked up the half empty pitcher of lemonade that was resting on the top and poured some into a glass. "Yeah, they tend to do that," he said, setting the pitcher down. "Lemonade?" He took a sip as he waited for the response and took a look in the glass,"They go to law school and figure their salary is going to go up so they can afford some pricey loft in London." |
"Thank you, that would be nice. Most of them are straight out of law school. They're generally ambitious and think working at the Auror Training Center will look good on their resume. They also thing the island is inhabited with scantly clad native girls. One look at Tucker in his bathing suit usually has them running for the hills. Don't get me wrong. There are female aurors on the camp, but it's not fun trying to seduce someone who can do a body binding curse on you before you can get your wand out." Edward smiles when he thinks of the one who tried to seduce Matil. It took both Tucker and him to get the guy out of the palm tree when she got finished with him. |
"Of course," Syd chuckled. "They think that by passing the bar exam that they automatically become the hottest thing on the planet." He took another sip of lemonade and shook his head. Rookies. Sure he was one once, but he had also been knocked down a few pegs on one of his first times in court. "But no more of that for you," he said, motioning to the door with his glass. "Now we have Hit Wizards who barge in without notice, demanding lists." |
"I've been wondering about that. I know lawyers love paper work and all, but I've always wondered why any one in their right mind would want this job." |
"Why? Well I love this department and even though it's stressful as heck, I find it to be incredibly... exhilarating," he said, downing the last of the lemonade. "Besides, someone has to do it, right?" He walked back around his desk and sat down. This Lestrange was curious, but he liked the man. He had a good head on his shoulders. |
"That makes sense. I've always been more of a hands on kind of a guy. I don't think I could stand being couped up in an office all day. I've always been happiest out in the field." Edward drinks some lemonade. He's amazed how at ease he is in Wordsmith's presense. "HIT wizards have always been unpredictable. I had to work with them on one particular case. I think it involved the disappearence of the Professor Durkshurk. I was just out of auror training and a little wet behind the ears too. The wizards were eager to work, but I had to watch them constantly. That Ms. Smirnov is something else. I've never met a HIT Wizard quite like her. |
"Yeah, I was never much of the 'go out there and book 'em' type. Our hit wizards aren't half bad really. So far the only one I've had ta' talk to like that," Syd chuckled. "Now the Minister..." He shook his head with a smile and then picked up his list. This wedding was going to be... something. Even if there was no attack, it'd still be far too much to handle. "He asks for all of my Aurors and then tells me ta' choose some. Can you believe that?" |
Vivienne stood outside her supervisor's office with her detailed report and the talisman. She raised her fist and rapped her knuckles on the door three times. |
"Now that's a first, I've never had a dark wizard send me an invitation to capture him. Has Brennan decided to take over the Ministry and declare Marshall Law?" Edward would enjoy arresting him. Edward takes another sip of lemonade and then there is another knock at the door. "Instead of joining your staff as an auror, I should become your door man." Edward gets up and answers the door. Great another irate woman. Must be a full moon or something. |
"That would be the perfect job for you," Syd chuckled. "Who is it this time?" He sat up as Edward opened the door and saw who it was. Maybe an assignment was done. If it was, he'd be incredibly happy. He could finally file something away. |
Vivienne stood there in the doorway not knowing what to do. "Meester Wordzmythe, eet iz done," she said and held up the report. "Ze talizman." She hurried inside the office and sat the report on his desk before rushing back to her spot outside the door. "I will go have ze coffee now." She smiled and walked off. |
