Welcome to Diagon Alley! Please read through this boring yet necessary FAQ before you RP in this forum.

What's the point?
Diagon Alley has been set up for three major reasons. First, we wanted to give students a place to spend their time between terms. We know you get bored waiting for us, so this is an alternative. Second, we hope that new students will fine-tune their RP skills and start to develop their characters in this forum by RPing with advanced players. This forum is a taste of the school RP. Third, we wanted to give the Ministry RPers a place outside of the Ministry walls to spend some time interacting with each other in a non-work environment.

Wait! Ministry RPers are here too?
This is our most recent change to Diagon Alley. Diagon Alley will be open to student characters much the same way it has been in the past - in between terms ONLY, while Ministry employees will be allowed to post their Ministry characters here year-round. All members will be allowed to post both their student and Ministry characters during the appropriate times (breaks between terms).

How will I know when I'm not allowed to post my student character anymore?
As soon as the Hogwarts Express threads are posted in the School RPG forum, posting your student characters in Diagon Alley should cease; however, you will still be allowed to post your Ministry character in Diagon Alley after this point and your student character in the School RPG forum. Likewise, when the Hogwarts Express threads close at the end of term, feel free to begin posting your student characters once more in Diagon Alley!

What do I do here?
Chat with your friends, buy your school supplies for your student characters, purchase household goods for your Ministry character, RP to your heart's content. As always, SS forum rules apply. Don't spam, swear, post inappropriate content, or harass your peers. You CAN be banned from this forum.

Some member is telling me what to do! Should I bother listening?
All the school staff are spending their time getting the school ready and Ministry Department Heads are engulfed in overseeing their departments, so we picked our shopkeepers from those who are most experienced in the school and Ministry RP and have proven themselves reliable. These people are equivalent to Ministry Department and Division heads and their word is law, so follow their directions and advice or face lemondrop13's and my adminny wrath. If in doubt, all keepers have their title below their name.

In addition, you may want to listen to other members simply because they're knowledgable and often are just trying to make your RP experience more enjoyable and realistic.

I want to be a shopkeeper! Can I make up my own position?
While we appreciate your enthusiasm, we have all the staff and shops we need at this time. Your suggestions are always welcome, however, and you can PM lemondrop13 and/or me directly with them.

Can I RP as someone other than my school character?
You are free to RP as anyone you want (other than a shopkeeper). We recommend you RP your school character and/or your Ministry character simply for the sake of clarity and continuity. Please note: you may ONLY RP as your own character(s). Don't RP as yourself and then someone else's character. It isn't proper RP protocol and is considered very rude.

Why exactly aren't we RPing our student characters in the school right now?
The school closes between terms to get ready for the next term. Soon enough, the Diagon Alley will close to student characters and you'll be headed off on the Hogwarts Express.

Is there a list of supplies I need to get for the School RPG? What if I don't get everything?
At this time, there IS a supply list in the thread just below this one. Your staff has listed all the books and supplies you will need. Never fear... even if you are playing a first year, you may buy supplies for any class. You don't have to 'purchase' anything to attend the school. Just play it like you have the supplies you need.

There is also a lot of information about the School RP, in general, in the Hogwarts School FAQ that you might want to take a look at.

If you have any other questions, please ask. Of course, if you ask when the sorting starts/ends, when the Express starts, when the term starts, or anything I just answered above, I'm free to thwip you. All important dates are posted on the front page of the site.

I've never done RP before so I'm kind of clueless. So when you post your RP in a thread I'm assuming it has to go in order with the last post posted? So what if two or more people respond to the last RP at the same time, unknowingly, won't things get mixed up and confusing? I'm not sure I explained that well, I hope it makes sense.

Say someone writes..

"Johnny trips over a stone and he loses his school books about as he fell to ground."

So the next person writes ..

"Sue saw that Johnny had lost his books and had gone over to help him pick them up."

I know lame, lol, but just a quick example. So what if not only Sue helps him pick them up but 10 other characters do as well because they do not realize other characters are responding. Won't things get all jumbled and confusing if that happens?

Also 2nd question, when you make your character is there a forum or some place where you post your character so people know who your character is or how does that work?

Lastly, 3rd question. When you RP do you stay in one thread or do you change threads as your "scene" changes? Like when I get my wand I RP in Ollivander's then when I leave there and get an Owl then I continue the RP in Eeylops Owl Emporium?

Right lets break this down:

1) Your first question was quite an interesting one. When you RP you don't actually have to respond to anything that happened before you. Or you could. If you get into a conversation with someone, you do have to respond to what they are saying and doing obviously. But if Sue didn't want to help Johnny, she doens't have to. And if she does and 10 people before her also do, then you can always edit, so that Sue just asked how Johnny was. Hopefully Johnny might want to talk to Sue.

2) There is a place for this. But unfortunately it is in The Hogwarts Haven. Which is a fan club you have to join. But there you can post your character, like everyone else does.

3) You continue onto other places as your character does. So if you are going to get an owl, you go to Eyelops. If you want an ice cream you go to Floreans.

so you don't actually have money and don't actually get school supplies or anything?? you just pretend you do?? like when you'd play house when you were little?? and do you have to talk in third person?? like "she walked gracefully through the door" or whatever?? and are classes at a certain time when school starts?? or can you just go whenever?? and what about quidditch tryouts?? how would you even play quidditch??

You pretend you do. Like playing house, yes. We don't actually give you money or anything. So you can be as rich or as poor as you wish. You just go and withdraw money from Gringotts.

You don't have to talk in third person, but it sometimes makes things easier for those you are RPing with.

Classes will be announced in your Common Room when you start school. It is up to the teacher when they do them.

To find out how to play quidditch you should read through some of the games in the archives. They are most informative.

Yes, of course you can post your Ministry charrie there. Feel free to post them all around Diagon Alley. At all times. It's only for your school charrie that there are restrictions for when you're allowed to post.

I'm new to snitch seeker and have only just been sorted, I've got everything I need apart from the potions ingridenints kit, the telescope and the phials, where am I suposed to get one??

Hey there!

You don't HAVE to get anything from the supply list, it's just for fun really to give you somekind of guideline of where and what to RP. I'm not sure which shop would sell that but that's alright, you can just RP your character asking in one of the shops, e.g. Slug & Jiggers Apothecary for the potions.
I doubt there really is a shop which sells telescopes for example so you can just assume your character having bought those if you want to.

Yes you can. If you for some reason cannot RP from the beginning of the term, you can ofcourse act as if you character has been attending school since the term started.

They absolutely can!

As long as it's during the role-play summer (inbetween school terms) and student characters are free to wander, everyone is free to role-play with whomever they want, IC and OOC.
