Post G.P.Taylor expelled after 'gay' HP misunderstanding

Several different news sources are reporting that while on a tour of schools author G.P.Taylor referred to Harry Potter as 'gay'. He was also accused of using inappropriate language (fart, bum, bogey and pee) and was thus removed from the hall.

Quote:
"As for Harry Potter, well, he's not the only gay in the village," the former Anglican priest told children at Penair School in Truro, referring to a catchphrase from the popular comedy TV show "Little Britain".

"All I said was that my villains are scarier than those in Harry Potter, and they are. I called Lord Voldemort Lord Vulgarwart. I said he was a bit of a wimp."

"It was a joke; a joke from 'Little Britain' that the children would know," Taylor was quoted by newspapers as saying.

"I didn't set out to offend. I'm a priest and I'm very careful about not offending people."

"It is down to a growing climate of political correctness. It is curbing freedom of speech."
Personally, I agree with G.P.Taylor, it was a joke referencing what's popular; a way of connecting with the teens who would have known what show he was referring to. I honestly don't see what all the fuss is about.

He was only quoting 'Little Britain'. It was a joke that undoubtedly the kids had heard before. Maybe it was unwise to use it in front of kids who could be mistake for thinking he was being serious, but really, I think the teachers over-reacted and brought more attention to the 'inappropriateness' by making a fuss.

You know you're famous when...

I don't get this, were the things he was saying actually something the children he was talking to would have got the reference of?

Also, I'm not sure if it was the wisest thing to put down Potter in front of a bunch of kids. What are the chances that 75% of them are actually Potter fans? I'd say there's a pretty good chance. He's lucky he just got taken out of the room.

The talk was to year 8 & 9's so the kids were between the ages of 12 and 14. And I believe 'Little Britain' (the DVD's) has a 12 certificate (correct me if I'm wrong.)

He's talked about without this Kaz. His book Shadowmancer has sold more than 250,000 copies and he reiceved a £350,000 advance for the film rights to his book. This guy doesn't need publicity; he is well known.

Maybe. I can see why it would have been unwise as the kids might've taken him seriously. But at the age of 12 - 14 I would've thought most kids would know the difference between a joke and what's real. And I can't really understand his motivation for saying it, it wasn't necessary. But all the same, it's nothing to be horrified about IMO. As he said in the full article, you hear a lot worse in the playgrounds. Kids are saying these things to themselves anyway and it's foolish to think otherwise.

I know this. but i guess it is just my student hat on! all the stuff they tell us that children shouldnt be told things by adults who care for them regardless of wether they know about them or not.. but ia gree that he didnt say much to them! it is just schools being worried by the children going him to parents and telling them what was said!

I could perhaps understand the fuss if he had been addressing 8 - 10 year olds but ... I still don't agree with the reaction.

They weren't though. They were secondary school kids between the ages of 12 - 14, above the age limit for 'Little Britain'.

'Gay' is hardly an insult. Even though 12 - 14 year olds are still children, the last thing kids like is to be patronised by being 'protected' from things.

would it be made sucha a bit deal if it were a teacher who had spoken like this? he would most likely have been suspended or worse sacked! i just think it was inapropriate for him to say these things regardless of the age of the children or the fact they they know it!

Sacked for a joke? Maybe if the staff were stiff/strict. The press are making a big deal about it because he's an author who could be seen as a rival to J.K.Rowling because he writes in the same genre.
