Post Czech lawmaker criticises Rowling's comments

A Czech lawmaker has criticised J.K.Rowling for her comments in regards to the childrens' and psychiatric institutions in Eastern Europe which she accused of being inhumane.

Quote:
"Since you opened your mouth, the work of our employees has been the subject of unjustified criticism," said Miloslav Macela in a letter sent to the Harry Potter author.
Jo condemned the use of caged beds as 'barbaric' in 2004 in The Sunday Times. Beds with cages and nets were subsequently banned in Czech from the start of 2007. However there have been allegations that some institutions are still using them. Others have defended the barriers, saying they 'prevent patients falling out and hurting themselves'.

She said that in 2004? Oh come on! That should be water under the Charles Bridge by now. (I hope someone gets the reference, I'm feeling extra innuendo-y today...)

And I completely agree. Obviously the situation was bad enough for the Czech government to change the laws. For many people in these institutions their lives are bad enough already without these humiliating caged beds.

It's an issue which is still being worked upon by the Children's High Level Group, of which Jo is a part. She recently went to Downing Street for a meeting about it.

Shut up Miloslav... you know she is right... if she wasn't, why the ban on cages and nets all of a sudden?

To stop them falling and hurting themselfs??? How high can the beds be???

Go J.K!!!

This is interesting...while I agree with Jo, why is a fiction author's opinion bothering this lady?

Oh my goodness, this is so crazy, I guess that I've been somewhat dumb to this whole subject, because I've never even heard of these institutions using those types of beds...but yes, she's right, it is absolutely barberic!!!

Clearly these people have nothing better to do with their lives. That was four years ago! They should have moved on, shouldn't they? *sigh*

it bothers her bc Jo is an influential person in today's society and bc she is well known people listen when she talks!! She is right though, cages are babaric and the "falling" thing is an excuse that didn't work, HELLO it is the 21st Century, if we can't come up with something more sensible and humane, we need to send the drs back to school!

...why are they bringing this up now? Also, a Czech lawmaker? Are you taking this seriously? I'm not too impressed.

i'm pretty sure that everything written about those institutions in Eastern Europe are not entirely accurate, so the lawmaker may have a point.

however, i'm even more sure that JKR pointed out a rather horrifyingly true state of how that country/s treat their disadvantaged. the truth hurts. maybe instead of lashing out at what was said 4 years ago this lawmaker better implement some laws to make the lives of those in institutions much better eh? do something positive on this instead of dwelling on the negatives.

Because Jo is very powerful - she uses her influence for charitable purposes - part of the reason this law came into affect was because of her. The law came into affect last year, so it's relevant now - yes she made the comments in 2004 but that doesn't mean they're not about what's going on at the moment.
