Caged Beds Go After Plea From JKR - Caged Beds Go After Plea From JKR

Summary:
Reacting to criticism from JK Rowling and human rights groups, the Czech government today ordered the removal of caged beds from psychiatric facilities.

Article:

"The minister ordered that all caged beds be removed immediately, and beds with nets by the end of the year,” Aneta Kupkova, a Health Ministry spokeswoman, said in Prague.

The move came a day after President Vaclav Klaus received a letter from Rowling, author of the bestselling Harry Potter series of children’s books, protesting the practice in the Czech Republic.

Critics have said the beds, fitted with cages or nets to contain difficult patients, are barbaric.

Amnesty International and the Council of Europe have protested repeatedly against their use, and Rowling’s letter was the final straw prompting Health Care Minister Josef Kubinyi to act, Kupkova said.

Of a total of 9,657 beds in Czech psychiatric facilities, about 100 have nets and only 20 have bars, she said.

Quote:
She also informs us that many in her country are upset because the article inciting Rowling's letter may have exaggerated the problem. Below is the text of a report from the Czech Assocation of Patients, as well as some pictures of the caged-versus-net beds.

TLC have also got some pictures of the beds.

Wow, I can't believe they use caged beds and nets and stuff. That really is barbaric! Go JK Rowling!

i work in a nursing home and they used to use restraints. (tie people's hands down and stuff) but thank god they stopped it was so sad to see. after they banned them, one of the nurse's aides was tired of watching this old man Joe pick his nose all the time so she taped his hands to his wheel chair. she was fired so fast! people like that don't need to be in that line of work. if i live to be 90 yrs. old and i want to pick my nose all day long, you bet i'm gonna do it! and not give a hoot whether you like it or not!

if you can't give those type of patients your attention enough that you have to put them in cages, you're in the wrong line of work.

I thought that this article was awesome! Go JKR! I love it when people like JKR, Angelina Jolie, and many others use their popularity for the better of mankind. People like Brittany, Justin, and Micheal Jackson use their popularity to make themselves look better. (in some cases I think it back-fires) Anyways, I think it is awesome that JKR has so much influence in the world. I mean she came from writing on a napkin at a caffe to living in a million dollar mansion! I think she is great!

Go JK! I think it's great that they're not going to be using them anymore. It's nice to see celebrities using their fame to help someone other than themselves.
