“So why exactly are we all here on a perfectly good Saturday, awake before dawn?” yawned George Weasley to an overly-chipper Oliver Wood.
“Like I told you yesterday,” answered Oliver, “this is my last year to win the Quidditch cup and we need to practice as much as possible to ensure our win!”
“I was thinking of something a little different for today’s practice,” he continued to the rest of the team. “When the dementors attacked Harry during our last game, I decided to take some defensive action. Harry tells me that Professor Lupin has taught him the Patronus charm to ward off dementors and he has agreed to pass his knowledge on to us. Harry?”
“Right,” responded Harry Potter, now standing. “To perform the Patronus charm, think of your happiest memory, point your wand, and shout Expecto Patronum.” Harry demonstrated the silvery stag emerging from his wand as he shouted the incantation.
The next twenty minutes found the team frustrated, only producing silvery wisps from their wands.
Finally, Oliver exclaimed, “I did it!”
“What is it?” asked Angelina, squinting at the tiny silvery creature fluttering around the room.
Fred rolled his eyes. “Figures,” he muttered. “It’s a Golden Snidget.” | |

Return to Hogwarts - 2. Avada Kedavra
Oliver’s heart was racing as he read the parchment delivered by the tawny owl. It was time. Grabbing his wand and turning on the spot, he Apparated into a dark and dusty room.
“Another one?”
Oliver turned his head at the sound of the gruff voice and recognized its owner as the grumpy-looking barman of the Hog’s Head Inn.
“Alright then. In through here,” the barman growled, gesturing toward a large painting of a young girl.
Oliver nodded as the portrait swung forward, and climbed into the tunnel revealed behind it. Making his way through the twists and turns of the dark, narrow corridor, Oliver came to a door opening to uncover an unfamiliar room decorated in the different house colors and banners of Hogwarts – three of them anyway - and filled with dozens of people. Looking around the crowded space, his eyes rested on a few familiar faces – his former Quidditch teammates.
Smiling apprehensively at each other, they quickly made their way over to the room’s exit. Already he could hear a commotion – sounds of the battle recently started, among shouts of Avada Kedavra from what must surely be Death Eaters.
Oliver took a deep breath, then stepped out of the Room of Requirement. It was now or never. |

It wasn't his fault. Really, it wasn't. That Slytherin Quidditch Captain, Marcus Flint, really should be the one to blame . . .
Tension had been mounting the last few weeks before the Gryffindor-Slytherin match, now that Gryffindor was favored to win the Quidditch Cup, and the Slytherins were taking out their frustrations by trying to hex the Gryffindor team every chance they could get. Every other day someone would show up in the hospital wing with flowers blooming out of his ears or a nose that wouldn't stop growing.
So when Flint cornered Oliver on his way to Transfiguration, of course his first reaction would be to defend himself. Was it his fault that he had just been studying Stupefy in Defense Against the Dark Arts and that was the first spell that came to mind? Oliver didn't think so, but Professor McGonagall apparently didn't see it his way as she stepped over Flint's unconscious body.
So here he was in detention instead of practicing Quidditch with the rest of his team, but it really wasn't his fault.

“Fred – George – pay attention!” Oliver scowled at the Weasley twins during another of his long-winded, early morning, pre-match speeches.
Apparently the Weasleys were bored with Oliver’s oration because they had been busy entertaining themselves by taking turns at pointing their wands at Harry and whispering Wingardium Leviosa, levitating his glasses off his face. At Oliver’s insistence, and much to Harry’s relief, the twins put their wands away and turned their attention back to Oliver as he continued.
After another twenty minutes of reviewing their strategy for the match, Oliver led his team onto the pitch. As they mounted their brooms, Oliver thought to himself, Not bad, I only had to call for attention once this time. | |

Class Ponderings - 6. Crucio
Sixth year.
The year they were supposed to be learning about the Unforgivable Curses in Defense Against the Dark Arts.
Instead, Oliver was sitting in class, stuck listening to Professor Lockhart drone on about his adventure with the Bandon Banshee, shamelessly inserting such trivial facts as his favorite color and favorite brand of hair potion into his lecture. Sure the guy was good-looking and charming, garnering him plenty of fangirls. And I can certainly appreciate that, he thought, smiling, as he recalled his own fangirls scrambling to get an autograph of the Hogwarts Quidditch god after Gryffindor’s last big win. But still, Oliver was learning nothing here.
Ah, well, I guess I’ll have to learn about Crucio on my own time, he thought, making a mental note to head over to the library after class, as long as it doesn’t interfere with Quidditch practice.

An Observation - 39. Sectumsempra
Dedicated to Sarah for helping me to stop procrastinate...
"Sectum-what?" Oliver, a bit bewildered, looked back and forth between the nearly-identical redheads during a conversation the three were having over a drink at the Leaky Cauldron.
"Sectumsempra," answered Fred brightly as his grinning brother nodded cheerfully.
Oliver smiled weakly as he took a sip of his butterbeer. It's something of a morbid way to tell them apart, he thought to himself somberly, glancing up furtively at the empty space on the side of George's head.
Unfortunately it probably won't be the last, or worst, injury to befall someone during the war. Oliver sighed, then quickly changed the subject.
