When you enter the History of Magic classroom, it appears to be in its usual layout. The desks are lined up in neat rows, and the room is a comfortable temperature, in contrast to the cold cloudy winter weather outside.
Once you notice Professor Amstern by her desk at the front, however, you’ll notice the one difference from the room’s typical state. There is a large, tall object, covered completely by a white cloth, standing against the front wall. The object is rounded at the top, but any other features are difficult to make out due to the cloth.
All will be revealed in due time surely. For now, the professor offers a smile, ready to greet you as you enter.

Paul wouldn't admit it, but he sure could do with Nesquik these days, their vibrant fur was extremely warm, and he had grown used to their new found affection towards him. But thankfully, the classroom was toasty enough when he walked in.
"Hello, Professor." Paul greeted, pausing a moment to look at the white cloth hiding an object. He wondered what it could be, but knew they would find out momentarily. So he took his usual seat where he and his boyfriend usually sat at.
History of Magic was not her strong suit, to say the least. Cat would like to blame it on being raised as a muggle with no knowledge of the wizarding world even a year ago (and this is what she’d say to anyone who asked). Still, she was better at it than others (transfiguration, anyone??), which was encouraging. All she had to do was study.
And study she did.
So, she felt (somewhat) prepared as she entered the classroom that morning. “Hello, Professor,” she greeted with a small, awkward wave. Then she promptly took a seat near the front and began setting up her materials for class.
Marina had absolutely sprinted up two staircases and nearly collided with a moving suit of armor on the way, but she made it. Barely. Her bag hung open on one side and a quill was poking out at a dangerously odd angle. Naturally unaware, she stepped inside the class room.
“Morning, Professor!” she chirped cheerfully, even if she was still slightly out of breath. Scanning the classroom, … her gaze nnaturally landed on the tall, something-something near the front. “Ooooh… is that a ghost in denial?” she added, ginning at the professor.
Spotting Cat already sitting near the front, Marina beamed and made her way over. “Hey!” she whispered excitedly, sliding into the seat beside her. They had to sit together, they were like best friends now, yes? “Do you think she’s hiding a mummy under there? Because honestly, I’m so ready for it”

For Thena, History of Magic was one of those lessons which she immensely enjoyed. One could be sure that they would never catch her falling asleep during them. This was why she was quite anticipating today’s and was among the first to arrive, Hermy beside her. Naturally, the object covered by the sheet captured her attention and held it for a bit. But of course the Ravenclaw knew better than to let that distract her since whatever was hidden would come to light eventually. Instead, she greeted the smiling woman. “Hello, Professor! Can’t wait to see what you have planned for us today.” She offered her a shiny smile {due to her strawberry lip gloss} before bouncing off to find a seat.
Many a wave was given to those gathered before Athena finally decided to take a seat beside Paul, the Hufflepuff who used to be a whole lot of grumpy. “Hi, Idris. Hi, Paul.” Saying no more, she settled in and busied herself with getting her books and writing apparatus ready.
JT entered the history of magic classroom with his backpack bouncing on his shoulders as the tall dark blond fifth year snake took in the room's setting. Right chatty first year girls and a few others, and something hidden under a white cloth. "Hello Professor Amstern!" JT greeted with a small smile before heading over to an empty seat, far from the chatty girls. Taking out a sketchbook, and a quill JT started to doodle on a dragon sketch on the page while he waited for the lesson to begin.

She was settling into the patterns of Hogwarts, but the one thing Aurora wasn’t exactly used to was how cold the castle could get. Especially when she was up in the owlery visiting her owl. She had decided that Olaf wasn’t allowed to fly too much lately and he was disgruntled. But that was for later. Right now, she was making her way into the History of Magic classroom, squeezing by a couple of other older students at the doorway.
“Good morning, Professor Amstern!”, she called out politely, eyes scanning the sheet covered object as she settled into the seat near the middle of the room that she had claimed. She was curious, but she wasn’t going to be impolite about it. She’d save her questions for later.

Aurora entered the History of Magic classroom and immediately felt the warmth. It was very welcome with how cold it got in the winter. She liked snow, but wasn’t a big fan of how cold things got in the winter.
The large object covered by a sheet immediately caught her attention, but she didn’t bother asking what it was because she knew that would be addressed soon enough. But her interest was definitely piqued. ”Hello, Professor!” she greeted with a smile before waving to her classmates.
Aurora headed over to her seat and got ready for the lesson to begin.

Calliope had finally gotten feeling back in her arm long ago but she never tired of reminding people that she was fit as a fiddle. Making starter again only to be forced to sit the bench the first match and watch a reserve fly in HER spot had been torture. Yes, it was brilliant being back on her broom, no more fussy owls from home, and not walking around like some one-winged harpy anymore. Not to mention no more nasty potions from the Hospital Wing’s dreadful soup - if she never had to step foot in that place again, it would be too soon. Hard enough that the Healer taught one of her favorite subjects too so she HAD to see him often.
And NO, she wasn't NOT mad at JT anymore, but she also wasn't not NOT mad at him. Don't worry, the logic made total sense to her.
History of Magic wasn’t exactly her first choice of how to spend an hour and some knuts or whatever. Unless they were talking about the history of Quidditch... which, fair, that might be worth listening to ... or maybe music, though that would just risk her dad’s name popping up and ugh, there was nothing more embarrassing than reminders of archaic popularity.
She trudged into the classroom anyway, flopping into a seat somewhere near the middle. Usual layout. Same old rows of desks. Same comfortable temperature that made it way too easy to nap through lectures. The only interesting thing in sight was the big lump under a white cloth at the front of the room. She snorted at a few whispered guesses and drumed her index fingers on the edge of her desk while she waited for things to start.

"Hello, Mr. Rocker," Vashti replied with a smile. She noticed him pause to take in the hidden object, a reaction she perfectly understood. Only natural for the students to be curious. In fact, she encouraged it!

Quite the entrance from this first year, but to the Gryffindor's credit, she had arrived with time to spare! "Good morning, Ms. García Massey." Vashti smiled, and then chuckled at her guess about the object. "Perhaps. I'm sure we'll find out shortly," she answered good-naturedly.

"Hello, Mr. Forsfelle," Vashti answered with a smile of her own. It was good to see he had quickly prepared himself for the lesson, though from her vantage point she could not see that he was doodling rather than writing. Still, even if she could, there was no harm in that before class had begun.

A quiet entrance from the Slytherin Ms. Barrington, but Vashti didn't mind. The Slytherin had found a seat and, perhaps, noted the hidden object at the front then. Vashti offered a smile if the girl happened to look her way then.
After the last student had taken their seat, Vashti closed the classroom door with a flick of her wand, the door latching with a soft click. It was time to begin class, and if anyone decided to waltz in late, they wouldn't go unnoticed.
“We’re going to start off our lesson with a question,” Vashti said, addressing the students. “It’s quite a general, broad question, but that also means there are many possible answers - especially considering this location has been around for more than 1,200 years now.” Could they guess what the place would be? No worries if they did not, since she was about to reveal it anyway. “So, what do you know about Hogsmeade? Whether it's an historical event that occurred in the village itself long ago, or something more recent, or anything else that relates to it.”

It hadn’t taken long before Athena had all her materials at the ready. Students were still trickling though so she would have to wait a tad longer to put those materials to use. Catching Aurora’s wave, she returned it with a smile. Then she lowered her gaze as she flipped open her textbook. Grabbing her quill, the seventh year began sketching the solar system on one of the pages. You know… just to past the time.
Unfortunately, she was only a quarter of the way through her masterpiece when Amstern called the class to attention. Athena abandoned it temporarily. Her interest was piqued even further with the way the woman grabbed her attention with chosen words.
Hogsmeade.
Perhaps the prettiest little village during the Christmas holidays.
There was much one could say about Hogsmeade but Athena’s next thought went to its founder. “The village was founded by Hengist of Woodcroft after he fled his home because of Muggle persecutors,’’ came her answer as she lowered her hand after being called on. It seemed appropriate, bringing up the founder first before anything else.
Cat beamed when her (yes, best) friend sat next to her. She expected nothing less at this point, to be honest, and Marina’s presence actually brought her some sense of normality, if absolute chaos could be considered normal.
Alas. “A mummy??” she repeated in a hoarse whisper. Marina had to be joking. Although, she probably wasn’t. Cat’s dad had told her that anything was possible now. Basically. “I guess that would be historical.” So, on topic, maybe?
She eyed the object under the sheet skeptically.
Luckily, Professor Amstern started class and pulled Cat from her thoughts. General questions were good, because it (usually) meant that Cat could remember reading something about the topic. Although this one… she was drawing a bit of a blank. Still, she raised her hand. “Hogsmeade is the village near Hogwarts where the Hogwarts Express comes into.” She said it with confidence, but that was quite literally all the knowledge she had on the subject. Clearly, she needed to do more studying to do.

Aurora returned Athena’s smile then got distracted as the lesson began. Oooh, Hogsmeade! She loved going to Hogsmeade. It was always a good time.
And she definitely knew quite a bit about the ancient village.
Aurora raised her hand to answer the question. ”Since the late twentieth century it’s been the only all-wizarding village in Britain. There was also a goblin rebellion in the vicinity in 1612 and Hogsmeade was used as the wizards’ headquarters at the time.”

Smiles, yes. Hello. Calliope possessed enough tact to return the gesture - after all, it wasn't Professor Amstern's fault that history was drier than an unpolished broom or whacking a good carbon fiber drum.
She was thankful she wasn't the only, mostly, clueless one in the classroom. Though she did fold her arms across her chest in quiet protest as that one Ravenclaw first year stated the obvious facts that she may have also wanted to offer up. But a thought lingered in the back of her mind, something about the name Woodcroft...
AHA!
"Founded in 914," she nodded sagely when it was her turn - the only reason she remembered that being because mamma had not stopped reminding her about it during the festivities and then for a couple weeks after. She got it, this place was older than dirt. "There was a whole thing 3 years ago in Hogsmeade Village celebrating it being so old called the Woodcroft Games. The Butterbeer Barrel Roll was pretty cool and a dessert called cra-something-chan was good from what I remember."

Marina perked up a little at the question, her quill tapping lightly against her parchment. “Oh! My mum used to tell me loads of stories about Hogsmeade,” she said brightly, “She said it was the coziest place - the kind where you could get lost in the snow and still somehow end up with a mug of hot chocolate in your hands.”
She leaned forward on her desk, her tone bubbling with amusement. “Ooooh I also heard... one winter -- the roads were completely blocked, and the Honeydukes owner just started handing out sweets to all the kids stuck there. I heard it was chaos, with everyone running around with sugar quills and chocolate frogs -- so very high on sugar”
Feeling excited about the place all over again, she turned to look at Cat, “you and me are definitely going there,” she added with a gentle nudge to her arm, “First stop: Honeydukes, obviously.” GRIN.

The thing about History of Magic was that it was virtually the same everywhere. Sure there were more UK oriented topics here, but the essence was the same everywhere. The tall object was mysterious, sure, but Tiffany knew well enough then to ask about it. All would be revealed in due time. It was probably a statue replicated related to the Woodcraft founder dude that Calliope referenced. Probably not a giant butterbeer, but that would be cool. Although maybe not the sharing bit. Seated beside Aurora, she tried to consider what today's lesson might entail.
Hogsmeade, obviously. But would they maybe be recreating some event that took place in the nearby village? Maybe a reenactment of the goblin rebellion?
"I remember reading something of a time thief.... Amarantha de Talone, I believe. She basically had been hiding out around Hogsmeade and stealing youth from everyone for like hundreds of years." Wait, was that mysterious object a statue of Amarantha? It's not really Hogsmeade related, but kind of connected. And definitely history related in knowing a historical figure.

"Correct." Vashti smiled. "It is also often said that the place he used as his home is now The Three Broomsticks Inn."

"I can't say I disagree with your mother. It is a very lovely and cozy village." Vashti smiled. "And I think I've heard that as well." If they were thinking of the same incident, it had occurred a number of years after Vashti's own time as a student. "I'm sure that was fun for those who received the sweets." Perhaps being snowed in hadn't been, but the free sugar had surely helped.
She did note Ms. Garcia Massey's added comment to Ms. Webb, but so long as the side chatter did not go on for longer, she would let it pass for now.

Wait, was that mysterious object a statue of Amarantha? It's not really Hogsmeade related, but kind of connected. And definitely history related in knowing a historical figure.
"That's true." Vashti nodded. "Her actions were finally uncovered back in 2078." And it was a good thing that she had been found out. Stealing time and youth from others was quite a horrific thing to do.
As each student gave their answer, the events and facts they mentioned appeared on the chalkboard. Vashti paused for a few more moments to make sure there were no other raised hands. None appeared, and plenty of answers had already been given, so it was time to continue to the next one.
“Excellent answers, everyone,” she said. “Hogsmeade has been the scene of many significant events in its long history, from becoming a safe haven from persecution to goblin rebellions and to numerous other events. It is also the scene of many smaller, everyday moments. These events might not have a huge impact on history as a whole, but they are nonetheless important to the people that experience them.” How many students had gone on their first date in Hogsmeade? How many friendships had been built there? How many of them had family members who lived in the village? Big or small, there was no end to the importance of the only all-wizarding village in Britain.
“Now, I’d like to change our topic of discussion,” she continued. “So I have another question to ask you. What do you know about Gunhilda de Gorsemoor? Who was she? What did she do in her life?”

Even though Aurora already knew a lot about Hogsmeade, she was still taking notes. She was trying to be as thorough as possible, especially with her OWLs coming up at the end of term. Best to have all of her bases covered since she had no idea what would be required of her for the exam.
The topic suddenly changed and Aurora took a moment to think before she raised her hand. ”She was a Healer. She was gifted in Potioneering and discovered a cure for Dragon Pox.” There actually was a statue of her at Hogwarts, but she figured she would leave that bit of information for one of her classmates to share.

Athena did recall hearing that Hengist had used the current Three Broomsticks as his home. She needed to check her textbook to see if there were any images of the place back then. Who knows how much or how little it had evolved, and it would be interesting to see. As the other students spoke and Amstern confirmed or corrected their answers, Athena made her notes quite diligently. There was so much information on the little village that the Ravenclaw could barely keep up!
All this lesson was invoking in her, was the urge to take a trip to Hogsmeade. It was just too bad that one had to wait until a weekend scheduled for such. “There's a statue of Gunhilda on the third floor at Hogwarts Castle. When the statue’s hump is tapped with a wand and Dissendium is said, a secret passage is revealed. This passage leads to the basement of Honeydukes.” The seventh year lowered her hand after she was done speaking. Her answer wasn't really on par about Gunhilda's life but it was an interesting fact nevertheless.
Cat smiled at Marina's invitation (or rather, expectation) for them to go to Hogsmeade together. She wasn't sure what Honeydukes was, but she wasn't about to have side chatter in class, so she'd ask her friend about it later.
As for now... Gunhilda. Gunhilda de Gorsemoor. It was quite a name. It made her easier to remember. "She's a potioneer!" She said a bit loudly, her hand shooting up a half-second later than it ought to have in her excitement. She also didn't catch that her classmate had already made that point, but hopefully it was fine because Cat had more to say. "Or, well, she was." She was alive in the, like, 1100's or something. "And she's on a chocolate frog card."One that Cat had, actually. And that was new information that none of her classmates had already said so there.

Her actions uncovered back in 2078?!? Tiffany's eyes widened because like her parents graduated Hogwarts around then. Might have been 2079, and technically her dad didn't graduate Hogwarts but still. It was forever ago and also maybe why she'd heard of the 'time thief' in their own school days conversations.
As far as this witch Professor Amstern mentioned ... Gunhilda who? Tiffany tried to rack her memory for any stories she might have heard. It was hearing the older Ravenclaw girl mention the statue on the third floor that jogged her memory though. Yes she only had heard Gunhilda referred to as the 'one-eyed witch'. Which in hindsight, seemed rather unkind. Oh dragon pox mention by Aurora helped trigger a memory too.
"I believe there's a chocolate frog card with her name on it, which is kind of funny if you think about it... cause like the secret passage leads to Honeydukes where you can buy chocolate frogs." Yea, she humored herself with that irony.

Mary-Lou had been sitting there in silence, she had no clue, who this person was, like seriously, was she supposed to know everyone. Knowing that the Professor would want an answer, she raised her hand. "I expect it's someone really old, or someone who lived a long time ago, who did something important?" Mary-Lou then looked back down at her desk, yep that would do nicely, she didn't have a clue what else to say and at least she had answered the question right.

Aaaaaaaaaand sorry, professor, but this was where you lost her.
Gunhilda de who? Why would anyone name their child that?!
Calliope blinked and looked around the classroom and to her dismay, everyone else - even the other clueless girl - had some sort of answer to give. Well that was just rude. She slouched a little lower in her seat and folded her arms across her chest as several people mentioned chocolate frogs and their cards. The name didn’t ring any bells, and she was pretty sure if this witch had ever been on a chocolate frog card, shed have remembered wouldn't have known anyway because those things freaked her out. Honestly, who thought enchanted chocolate that tried to hop off the table was a good idea? The legs alone made her skin crawl. She’d had one leap onto her once when she was four, and that was it... DONE for life.
"Fizzing Whizzbees are way better," she muttered extra quietly to herself and she resumed tapping her quill against her parchment. "At least they do something fun."

"Correct, yes. And it was a very important invention in wizarding history with lasting impact even today." Even though the disease hadn't been completely eradicated, having a cure for it saved so many people's lives.

Ah, an excellent fun fact, this was. "That's true." Vashti smiled. "A very distinctive statue too."

"She is, that's true. Quite the fun little connection between the two, yes?" Vashti thought so, at least. Sometimes two very different things were connected in a tiny, unexpected way.

"That is technically correct," Vashti replied with a smile. "Gunhilda was born in 1556, which is quite a long time ago."

"Fizzing Whizzbees are way better," she muttered extra quietly to herself and she resumed tapping her quill against her parchment. "At least they do something fun."
Ms. Barrington appeared to be inclined to remain quiet, and that was quite alright. Though Gunhilda was an accomplished woman, that didn't mean she was well-known by every single person, given how long ago she lived.
Vashti also was too far away to catch the Slytherin's quiet mutter to herself, but there was no need to call it out even if she had - the beauty in the variety of sweets available to them was that it catered to all different tastes and opinions.
Soon there were no more hands raised, and it was time to continue on with the lesson.
“As Ms. Bay and Ms. Webb noted, Gunhilda was a gifted potioneer and Healer, and these skills led her to creating a cure for dragon pox. Her creation has saved countless lives in the centuries since, and because of her accomplishments, she's one of the notable witches now featured on a Chocolate Frog Card, as Ms. Webb and Ms. Rose noted." In a small way, another connection between Gunhilda and Hogsmeade by way of Honeydukes. So, time to continue through that thread.
“Now, what connection could there be between Hogsmeade and Gunhilda de Gorsemoor?” A fair question. "As Ms. Laramore mentioned, there is a statue of Gunhilda in one of the third floor corridors here at Hogwarts. It conceals a secret passageway that leads to the cellar of Honeydukes. Harry Potter notably used it in his third year to sneak out and visit Hogsmeade when he did not have permission to go.
“The passage still exists today. However, before those who are more mischievously-inclined start making any plans for a late-night snack run, I must inform you that it is also currently inaccessible. It has been sealed off for many years now, and I can assure you that your Headmaster has added magical guards to it as well.” Not to mention any security measures the Honeydukes shopkeeper maintained in and around her shop too. “So, a fair warning to all.” Her voice was firm but with a smile. This lesson was intended to be both fun and educational, but it would not excuse them from consequences should they attempt some ‘first-hand research’ by sneaking out of the castle.
"For today, we will be exploring a different version of the secret passage." With a wave of her wand, the white cloth vanished, revealing the statue of Gunhilda de Gorsemoor. "I have here a replica of the statue that sits on the third floor, and behind it, I have created a secret passageway. But, while the real passage is a long, straightforward path to the cellar, the one you all will be navigating is a bit more complex." More on that later though.
"Before we begin exploring, I want to teach you all a spell that will help you navigate the path forward." Another flick of her wand, and words appeared on the chalkboard.

"If you've heard of the Four-Point Spell, this one is similar. But while the Four-Point Spell references the cardinal directions of north, south, and so on, Specialis Punctum shows you the direction of a specific object. Allow me to demonstrate.
"Place your wand flat in your palm." Vashti did so, her palm facing upward. "Imagine the object you want to find very clearly in your mind, as many details as you can. For this, I'll use the statue as our example." She stood at the other end of the front wall, away from the statue. Having duplicated the statue earlier, she had a clear image of it in her mind even now. The distinctive hump on Gunhilda's back, the hand grasping her cane, her always-watching eye... "Then say the incantation, pronounced speh-she-AHL-es punk-tum, while keeping your focus on the object as you do."
And now... "Specialis Punctum."
Her wand spun itself around, and then - stopped, pointing directly at the statue. Excellent.
"Once you stop imagining the object, the spell will end." With her focus broken, her wand stopped laying so rigidly in her palm. She resumed her relaxed grip on it.
"Now it's time for you to try. You may use any object you would like to practice with, whether it's your quill, your textbook, or your desk, or anything else." So long as they could picture it and its details clearly, it was good for practicing. "If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask." She was here to help!
"You may begin."

Indeed that was a very distinctive statue, with its humped back and the manner in which it opened up to the secret passage. She wasn’t upset that it was sealed, however, as there was no desire to make a long hike to Honeydukes in secret; it was much easier going the regular route. Athena was also aware of the witch being featured on Chocolate Frog cards, having seen a few of the cards herself. She returned to making her notes, thinking about how much she’d like it if Gunhilda happened to be a topic that came up in the History NEWT exams.
Thena leaned forward in anticipation of the exploration that was to come as she admired the way the replica had been created, exactly like the real thing. But since there was a spell to practice, she then refocused her attention to add the details of it to her notes. The only time she paused in doing so was to watch Amstern’s demonstration. Colour her intrigued as she watched it all unfold.
Notes out of the way, the Ravenclaw got to work on the practical. “Speh-she-AHL-es punk-tum,’’ came the muttered words. “Speh-she-AHL-es punk-tum. Specialis Punctum. Specialis Punctum. Specialis Punctum.” Now, her wand was placed flat on her palm as she closed her eyes to concentrate on conjuring a mental picture of the inkwell that sat almost at the edge of her table. “Specialis Punctum.” The incantation was whispered; Thena sadly had trouble with non verbal spells. Practice was done as often as she could though! Just more out of class than during lessons for fear of wasting precious class time.
There was no spinning of the wand - Thena did not feel anything of such - so she tried again. “Specialis Punctum.” This time, even as her mind fastened on the image of the inkwell, the wand spun in a clockwise manner. When it stopped, she opened her eyes to find it pointing directly at the object she had pictured. Needless to say she was quite delighted!
