Default DADA Lesson 5

Professor Rae walked quickly into the classroom, setting a large cage on the desk, covered in a fine cloth with embroidered stars and moons on it. She propped up a sign against it reading, "WARNING! DO NOT TOUCH" before she retreated from the room. She did leave the door open, however, allowing any students to enter while she retrieved the rest of the supplies from her office.

the rating is XXXX because it is almost always fatal, only a patronus can repell it and since the victim is sleeping it is difficult to cast in time

"Yes, lways, I think that's very close to how the lethifold moves. It has control over where it goes, or else it would never make its way onto a person's bed, but it is a weak creature. It usually looks like a shadow at night and the way it moves only assists in that."

The rating is XXXXX because it is fatal, attacking sleeping victims, suffocate them and eat them.

*Lina shrugs* Doesn't sound too plesant, and you have almost no chance of defending yourself in your sleep...

"Both Backslash and lways gave excellent reasons why the lethifold is considered to be so deadly, but Lina is correct. The MoM rating is XXXXX. Five points for Ravenclaw. Can someone clarify what exactly that rating means for those who are unfamiliar even still with the ratings? I would suggest you know these in particular and put them in your notes."

I think that it is rated XXXXX for Known Wizard Killer/impossible to train or domsticate because all the lethifold does is kill. It does the majority of it's killing at night on sleeping victims which makes it virtually immpossible to defend against like everyone has said.

"Have reputation of murdering wizards / impossible to domesticate or train. Which means it kills and it obviously does, because it feeds of us humans to survive. It acts by strangling and suffocating the victim, but nonetheless not always considered a *dark creature*."

"That's right, Nadia. Thank you for that definition. Five points for Slytherin. As many of you have already said, the lethifold suffocates its victims in teh dead of night, using the victims' sleep and the darkness as tools. Now, there is a spell that is useful in a situation such as this, but let's talk about non-magical defense, since you know that is one of my most talked about topics. What are some ideas you have in defending against a creature like this? Prevention ideas are also acceptable."

ooc: It has been brought to my attention taht Hermy answered this question first. I wasn't really paying attention, I guess, and I apologize. Five points awarded to Ravenclaw, and Slytherin can keep their five as well.

"Aside from the suggestion that one not sleep at all...I suppose if one suspected the presence of a Lethifold, to erect some kind of barrier--perhaps wire meshing? On all possible places the creature could enter--windows and gaps under the door, for example."

Lina tries to think about ways to protect yourself while you are sleeping, but the only thing she can think of is that you have to wake up in time to be able to protect yourself. She speaks up.
Like Backslash said, you need the lethifold to trigger some kind of alarm when it enters the house, giving you time to reach for your wand.

since it relies on shadows to hide, what about a night-light or lantern?

Have your house magically sealed might work. Think that the lethifold can creep from under your door, but if you have a charm to cover those spaces they ca't come in. Now, to fight it you could always try to protect your neck, seeing this is the most important place when fighting a lethifold. Put your arms by the side of the neck to stop it from asphixiating you. You can try catching it, though not with your bare hands, no. Though not a spirit it and does have a material shape it is still too thin, it is shadow like, too fast and difficult. IF we could get something to pierce it, like a trident I am thinking, and glue it to the floor it might work.
And, yeah, you could stop sleeping...

Aniri listened to her classmates answer the questions and tried to come up with something as creative.

You could possibly have motion sensors just underneath your doors and the places it could get through. An alarm could go off and you'd have time to use your wand.

I agree with Aniri regarding a motion sensor because the Lethifold is about half an inch thick unless it had just fed on a victim. Sensors would need to be strategically placed so that the Lethifold will not glide over them.

"There are many good suggestions, and I'm delighted to discover that you are all starting to think outside the box. When it comes to protecting yourself, everything is fair game and nothing is sacred. I had a friend in Auror training that was attacked while eating breakfast and somehow managed to take the Dark Wizard down with a plate of scrambled eggs and toast. She was quite clever, though. Enough of my stories, let's move on."

She pulled out her wand and tapped it on teh cage. The lethifold shifted, pulling its ragged edge back into the cage. "Lethifolds are very rare and most of us will never again see a lethifold. I had to send for this lethifold by Floo network, and I'm returning it to its home after the class. Does anyone know where the lethifold thrives?"

Kay remembers reading about the Living Shroud and raises her hand to answer the question. "The Lethifold thrives in tropical climates."

Lethifolds are really rare and are usually found in Tropical CLimates. So my best guesss would be the dark shadows in the Tropical Regions.

"Professor, do they stay in the Tropics because it's warm and they are thin? I imagine they could have a problem in temperatures below freezing."

Lethifolds become thicker after they have killed and digested their victim.
Incidentally, the best way to repel a Lethifold is the Patronus Charm. The wizard which discovered this is the only known survivor of a Lethifold attack. Stupefy and Impedimenta are useless.

Flavius Belby, actually. He was holidaying in New Guinea at the time of the accident.

Ahh, ok I have my names confused, I don't know why it happens with those two all the time...Edgar Stroulger invented the sneakoscope.

OCC: For some reason, my brain saw the one and I typed the other. Probably because I looked it up online and the font was really small. Oh well

Sangeetha tilts her head at all these answers. Sighing to hersel, she wished that she had atleast come to the previous classes. She had absoluely no idea what they were talking about, but she had gotten the general idea.

She continued writing her notes as each student answered. Many of them were repeated but she wrote them down all the same. She highlighted parts of it on where it lived and how it looked like and how it killed.
