Today's activity is being hosted in the Charms Cabana, which for the day has had a host of tables and chairs added to the space to give the students a place to work. One long table placed in front of the bookcase has been laden with snacks of different varieties, both magic and mundane alike - majority of the sweets variety. There is just enough space left available to grab some of the Latin books, however majority of the others have all been covered by the table - with a protective charms cast over them as well to protect from any food mishaps.
The rest of the tables, round in shape, are spread through the room, paper and colored pencils scattered over all of them, with 6 different chairs surrounding them. Professor Liu herself can be seen facing the blank wall in the Cabana, cans of different colored paint in her hands and floating behind her as she carefully arranges them in front of this space, her cane leaning against the wall beside her. As the time for the meeting rolls around, she has made sure the door is wide open and called out a friendly greeting for those on time. "Welcome, welcome! Come in and make yourselves at home, dears. You can grab a spot to sit or help yourself to some snacks to start." She would be happy to explain what they would be doing for the day in due course.
But for now, nothing quite healed the soul like socialization and sweeties.

Ary had rather fallen in love with the Charms Cabana from his initial visit. He found it quite a soothing place for him to be when he needed to get away from the chaos of being social. He still felt this way of the Cabana despite the changes there for today’s activity. Bag slung over his left shoulder and his fingers deftly working on a paperclip, he stopped for a moment to observe the paint cans. How interesting; whatever was today’s activity all about?
The firstie offered his professor a smile before his gaze roved across the variety of snacks. There were many sugary stuff there, which he had a dislike for. In any case, he wasn’t hungry. Another habit he had not picked up from Dad Adi, it was a huge appetite. So he made his way to a chair. After dropping his bag on the table, Ary turned his attention fully to the green paperclip.
He was trying to make a mandrake for Drake but the entire project was going horribly wrong so far.

Bry had only been in the Charms Cabana a couple of times but so far she had liked it. There was a sense of calmness that came along with being inside the room. That may have had something to do with the quiet sound of waves that was normally playing and that was the first thing she noticed was missing when she walked through the doorway. It seemed a little strange without it now.
The rest of the set up was taken in fairly quickly, particularly all the treats. It only took but a second for the small blonde to select a freshly baked brownie. "Hello, Professor Liu. Thank you for the snacks." she smiled brightly, giving the women a finger wiggle in greeting also with her free hand.
Now she had to find a place to sit. The decision was an easy one when her blue eyes fell upon Aryan. Making her way over towards him she set her bag down on the table next to his and sat down in the chair beside his. "Want a bite?" Bry knew he wasn't very big on sweets but she always offered all the same. "What are you working on today?"

Roman thought Charms had all the makings of being his favorite subject. It was practical in use, complex enough to keep him interested, and fascinating all the same. The theory behind it also had intrigued him, and so he had checked out some of those titles in the library. Some of them were above his head still, but he supposed he could reread the titles later in his school career again to get more out of them.
He wanted no snacks. But two fellow first years, and snakes at that, were already there, so Roman approached their table without meeting the eyes of the professor. He was still quite shy around the adults.
“Aryan. Bryony.” He said simply as he took a seat and sighed, eyeing the space around them carefully. He saw the Latin books, and cans of paint. Hmm.

Charms... one of Bryson's favorite subject that he thought was fasnating and cool to learn. The first year puff eager to learn made his way towards the Charms Cabana and looked around. He hasn't been in here yet but made it on his list of things to see later on in the castle and around the grounds. Biting his lip he shyly walked into the room he didn't know anyone in here, so he kept to himself. The disadvantage of not having siblings or friends already here, was having the courage to make some and he wasn't courageous or else he'll be a Gryffindor
"Hello Professor, wow... this place looks cool and I hope you're having a good day!" Heading over towards the sweets he grabbed a cookie and took a bite of it. Looking around he noticed paint of different colors in the Professor Liu's hands which made him curious; very curious indeed.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Charms had been a fascinating subject to study. He hadn't been the best in class, and he still had trouble pronouncing some of the incantations, but he was trying!
Sohrin walked into the charms cabana in high spirits, tripping only once over his own feet. He had discovered another secret passageway the day before, which provided him with a shortcut to the Ravenclaw common room. If only he was as good at solving the riddles to get in as he was at uncovering secrets in the castle. He had to usually wait for an older student to let him into the common room. "Hello, Professor!" He greeted with a wide smile and stooped down to tie his shoelaces. He wore a simple grey hoodie and black pants that he wasn't afraid to get dirty."Are we going to throw paint today?" please? pretty please? If they could, that would be an EPIC class!

Professor Liu teaching Latin as well, one of Mitsuki's more hyper focused subjects on her schedule, the Ravenclaw had become quite accustomed to the new professor over the short time that had been this term. Her Charms OWL had been abysmal and both her mother and father had insisted that she speak to the professor about the possibility of her continuing the subject despite the Poor performance. A discussion Mitsuki had yet to follow through with, however, and no doubt her perfectionist of a mother had written to Hogwarts by now with inquiries since timetables needed to be properly finalized before the end of the month. Alas, other things preoccupied the sixth year's thoughts and certain ones were fueled by the curious development of Mercer becoming more and more of an unexpected distraction each day.
Less drawn in under influence of Charms and her flame being the professor's association with Latin, Mitsuki arrived at the Charms Cabana (in her uniform no less) and paused at the entranced with a befuddled wrinkle to her brow and puckered lips - a look that lingered for only a moment or two before resuming her usual resting indifference. Had she mistaken the notice for a first year gathering an possible orientation? She supposed that was possible as Pistachio had been sticking their tongue in her ear while she checked the notice board.
She recognized one of of the younger spirits, Sohrin, speak to to throwing paints and her attention finally drifted from the Latin books (one of which she did pick up) and to the supplies up front along with the professor herself. "Mess is the point," she offered as she suddenly appeared by the eaglet's side.

Etta had made her way to the Charms Cabana! Step one: Done. Standing at the door that lay wide open she first poked her head in to inspect the population.
One. Two. Three!
Etta straightened herself and took a DEEP breath as she set foot inside the cabana where Professor Liu welcomed her students. Sheepishly bowing, Etta greeted the professor, ”Hello, Professor Liu.” Her voice was low and timid, which was the complete opposite of how she heard herself. But nonetheless the youngling gave Professor Liu a shy smile before finding where to sit.
Oh snap.
Who knew finding a place to sit would be a difficult task! Etta’s heart began to pound in her chest and the anxiety began to rise as she looked around the room. There were many curiosities around but the youngling’s mind couldn’t focus on them quite yet.
Don’t be scared. Don’t be scared. Don’t be scared.
Etta wringing her hands, scanned the perimeter. There were already a few students in attendance, some she recognized. Turning her head slightly to the side she marched to a table and set her bag down before taking a seat. Step two: Done.
Now, to observe her surroundings. The desserts looked so tasty and her mouth watered but she was feeling much too shy and anxious to approach the delicacies. So she just turned her attention to all the objects laid out on the tables, mentally reciting the colors and shapes she was seeing including the cans of paint to help decrease the anxiety.
Paint! Yes, Etta loved paints!
No panic today! Etta was determined to have a successful day in class!

"This class is really... short," Mercer dropped into a seat beside Mitsuki, but his attention was fixed on the sheer number of firsties in the room. Like... ALL firsties? What were the odds. "Or is it 'disinclined toward height'? 'Youth adjacent'? I dunno. Baby faces, that's what it is." Mitsuki did get a wink over messes being the point, because they WERE.
He did give the rest of the room a glance, then, taking in the supplies and books and SNACKS. Merlin, he'd missed the snacks. Could he still have some? "Erm, good day, Professor. Thanks for the snacks. Hope we don't get the books sticky along the way."
On light steps Emmie entered the charms cabana to take part in the promised charms activity. "Good day Professor Liu!" she chirped in cheerful greeting as she passed their charms professor. Anything that promised sweets, and possibly something artsy to play with, and she was there. Hopefully if they had to use spells it wouldn't be anything too complex since Emmie wasn't exactly an expert at handling her wand just yet. A few broken vases at her aunties house was a clear sign of that. Emmie picked up a few snacks and sweets from a table before plopping herself down on a seat near Ary and Bry. Munching on a pumpkin pasty she took in the paints, and wondered like Sohrin had, but she didn't voice it if they could throw paint at each other because that'd be awesome! After the activity she'd steal another glance at the latin books that looked interesting.
Sloane rocked up to the charms cabana in her old joggers, a worn pair of converses and a hoodie and yes, the hood was up as she joined the rest of the students who’d already turned up. Before she turned up, she wasn’t exactly sure what a cabana even was, and honestly, she still didn’t really know.
When she’d finally made it there, the snacks did pique her interest, although she didn’t go straight in for sweets, unsure exactly what they were for. Upon looking at the faces of the other students however, they appeared to be for them. She’d circle back to them later. Instead, she moved around to one of the tables and took a seat, only offering the professor a glance before doing so. There were several free tables, which she’d almost been tempted to take because she wasn’t really a people person and also, the space to spread out her notes and books e.c.t was always nice. Alas, she chose to sit next to someone she actually knew, her fellow first year Slytherin Henrietta.
Sitting down next to her, she offered her a small nod before nodding towards the paint. “Do you think the Professor will mind if I make some abstract art?” her hands now miming the throwing of said paint around the makeshift activity room. “I don’t know about you, but I think I could really make this place stand out.”

With her hair pulled back neatly and wearing comfortable attire, Florence surveyed the room as she entered. Quite a few students in there already, most of whom seemed to be fellow first years and even house- and dorm-mates. And there was the professor too, of course, with several paint cans and a table with snacks laid out.
"Hello, Professor," she said with a polite smile, before making her way toward the snack table. She wasn't particularly hungry, but she thought it would be rude to ignore them entirely. So she selected a pumpkin pasty and a couple of chocolate chip cookies and set them on a plate.
Now, to decide where to sit...
The first year again noted a few dormmates scattered about the room, and, after only a moment of indecisiveness, she walked over to sit with Etta and Sloane.
"Hi," Florence said, offering a small smile as she sat down. She set her plate down on the table, picked up the pumpkin pasty, and then pushed the plate with the two cookies a little toward them. "If either of you want a cookie, you're welcome to have them."

Sigh.
The young Mr. Atryan-Rehman was so quiet, Roulan very nearly missed his entry. It was only due to a well timed glance over her shoulder that she spotted the young man, returning his smile as she gave a polite nod in his direction. She had certainly noticed his frequency to the Cabana, and she was quite glad to see someone else enjoying the space. She noted the young man did not gravitate towards snacks like she expected most would do and she resolved to add even more of a selection of flavor profiles the next time around. There was some sour in the group as well, but still mainly sugary. Or just carbs.
Maybe she could figure out what would be good for some spice.

Her colleague Hady’s youngest was the next to enter after Aryan. Which despite so early in the term and a newer introduction to this group of striking young minds, she was not at all surprised to so quickly see the blonde. The two were certainly peas of the same pod. Returning the smile and finger wiggles, Roulan was pleased to see she had gone straight for food. “G’day, Ms. Paton! You’re certainly welcome. I see you’re a brownie fan as well? Do you prefer the center pieces or the crust?” A lot could be told about a person by their answer to that question, you know.

Another young Slytherin joined the space, and while he did not look in her direction she smiled his way all the same in case he did. She was not the sort to get her braids in a knot if students did not greet her, particularly so early in the term. They’d hopefully get comfortable with her and the routine in time. At least he seemed at ease with his house mates, as he joined Bryony and Aryan as well.

The first years were quite on top of things, weren’t they? Roulan was very pleased to see the turnout of newest students thus far and their interest in getting involved. While classes were mandatory, these sort of activities were certainly not so it was encouraging to see so many faces. Was it the promise of food? She’d always heard that worked well. And truthfully, that had usually been the easy sell for herself as well. “Hello, Mr. Blacknight. I’m glad to hear you enjoy this space.” That was of course it’s purpose. “And I’m having a wonderful day, I hope you are as well.” So polite, this one was. She saw the curious look towards the paints and simply smiled.

Mr. Sohlberg was the next to enter and Roulan’s smile then turned to him as he did so. She noticed a slight trip and would have called out to warn him about his shoes, but the boy had already noticed and was taking care of it. Excellent - no accidents was always the preference, though she knew Professor Feirgrund was also very adept at what he did in his capacity at Healer should they need him. “Good day. You are looking comfortable today. I find I prefer the freedom of our own attire at times, don’t you?” With the students being required to wear uniform, Roulan hardly thought it fair she always got to choose her own. She’d bought a collection of pantsuits in different colors that she rotated for her lessons. Though today she was sporting her own pure white moomoo. His question had her eyes sparkling a bit, thought she figured she should not openly encourage such a thing. “Today I have some direction to provide regarding what I think might be a fun creative project. However, I would not assume to limit your process by telling you what methods can and cannot be used for your expression.”

Aha, and Ms. Rastings appearance marked the beginning (and hopefully not the end) of the arrival of older students. Now that Roulan was not tickled to see all of the beginners, she also firmly believed there was a lot that could be learned from shared experiences with older classmates as well. As she was encouraging some basic Latin (or at least, encouraging the thought on the subject) she was also pleased to see Mitsuki in attendance. The girl’s interest had been very quickly spotted in lessons and she was hoping she’d enjoy the mix of art and the ancient language she’d had planned for today.
Spotting the older Ravenclaw also did remind her she believed there was a letter on her desk from her mother that she had yet to open and read the contents of. The hazards of beginning of term and settling into the new schedule, she was afraid, but she’d be certain to open it later. If she remembered.
“Hello, Ms. Rasting.” She greeted as the girl joined her and Sohlberg. Roulan’s smile grew ever so slightly at the declaration, “Mess often can create something truly beautiful. But mess can also be damaging. Don’t forget to put a charm on your uniform, Ms. Rasting, to protect your clothes from others creative expression. Or should you like, I have an extra moomoo in my office I’d be happy to summon for you.” They were not the most flattering of dresses, but they were quite comfortable. And the way they soaked up paint could truly create a conversation piece for later wearings.

Ah, and there was the young Ms. Han. Roulan had certainly been hoping she’d make an appearance but she also understood if the students preferred not to go to every extracurricular. Rue smiled at her as she gave a polite bow in greeting and she inclined her head towards the girl in the same manner. “Hello, Ms. Han. With the help of the house elves, I’ve prepared plenty desserts to try today. Help yourself. And remember what I said about breathing exercises to increase your stomach capacity, hm?” Just a gentle reminder. As the girl moved off to join her classmates, Rue watched her for just a moment longer to make sure the young one was not overwhelmed by any previously displayed anxiety. Once she was safely seated her attention turned again towards the door and the next incoming student.

Another sixth year! Overhearing his comment to his companion, the Professor had to stifle a laugh as she glanced away from the pair lest they catch her accidental eavesdropping. It was only when she then heard the Eagle greet her that she turned back. “Hello to you, Mr. Branxton. Thank you for your concern about the books! The beautiful thing about Charms, is there is often a spell that fixes any types of disrepair. Or prevents it to begin with.” Which was to say all the books had been protected previously - and should a few pages have escaped, she had some spells up her sleeve. “And you’re welcome. There are plenty, so please take as much as your stomach can hold.” And maybe even then some for later.

Ms. Vance was quite the ball of sunshine as she entered. Which was appreciated - what Professor didn’t appreciate enthusiasm and a positive aura? “Good day, Ms. Vance. I hope you’re settling in here at the castle well?” She watched as she joined the Slytherin students. Had she been able to hear the girl’s thoughts, she would have assured there was no complicated spellwork today unless each student individually chose to use a spell. Her personally? She liked the more mundane ways of art - a paintbrush in the hand was unparalleled.

It took Roulan a moment to figure out who the next entry was, as when they come in there was a hood up over the head abstracting her view of the person beneath. No matter, she was quite certain there was no risk of anyone who wasn’t allowed on castle grounds having made it into the room, and based on height it was naturally a student, so she simply let them be. Though even as she thought that, she still glanced over every once in a while. It was one of these occasions she met the young snakes eyes and gave a nod of greeting with a smile. Ms. Knott, it seemed.

Truly this did seem to be more of a first year orientation, even if that had not been her intention. It wasn’t a bad thing though - at least not to her. She wasn’t certain if the two elder Ravenclaws would have an aversion to being in a room with the youngest of the castle. Perhaps they would rather take delight in being the most experienced in the room, as she knew some students were prone to doing. At Ms. Schultz entrance, she brushed off the thoughts and turned her attention to the latest entry. “Hello, Ms. Schultz. Thank you for joining us!” Hopefully they’d all be having fun shortly. At least everyone seemed well enough acquainted with someone else in the room that they should have a good time visiting together.
Hopefully.
Surveying the group that had already gathered, Roulan figured it was time to go ahead and introduce what they would be doing for this carved out time. Pushing herself off the wall she’d chosen to lean against, she clutched her cane a bit more tightly and supported herself on it while she made her own way towards the snack table, grabbing a dalgona to munch on while she addressed the class. "Good day, dears. Thank you all for joining me today! This is, of course, not any formal class for either Charms or Latin - so should you not want to do the proposed activity or you'd like to leave early - you are certainly welcome to do so. But for those of you itching to get creative... I do believe we have a blank canvas in this room that could use your assistance." She nodded towards the blank wall, popping the last of her candy in her mouth as she once more used her cane to wander around the room among the tables.
Finding an open spot at one of the tables, she carefully pulled it out and lowered herself onto the seat - reaching out to grab a piece of paper and pull it towards herself. "I tend to find drawing out your ideas before beginning the final project is the best approach, so at all of your tables you can find paper and pencils to use for your sketches. What we will be doing before we begin on the wall, is using this paper to create our own Charms trees. As I'm sure you all know, Latin is the building block for a lot of the spells we know and use today. For Experimentalists, we tend to consult Latin books in order to really study the root of established Charms to see if they could be deciphered into another use - or even to create our own incantations for a new type of spell. Having a basic understanding of the fundamentals of the language has always greatly assisted me with my own work in the field." While she had talked, she had drawn a basic shape of a tree on the piece of paper in front of her, before holding it up for the students to see.
"For today's project, we will be creating our own trees to decorate our wall while exploring the fundamentals of Latin and how it relates to known spells. Our 'roots' of our tree will be our Latin root words, while the leaves extending up from the roots will be Charms. I have plenty of Latin texts available with the root words listed within for those who need them. And as for the Charms? You can simply list as many as you can think of containing your chosen root. Or please feel free to further expand on your creativity and create your own Charms - though be forewarned, if you create your own I will be asking for an explanation on what the spell is intended to do." Just for curiosity's sake, truly. Because again, this was all informal. "If you'd also like to include opposites, you're welcome to do so. Just try to think of a creative way to indicate it is an opposite to your root. You can also add the names of magical items, spells other than Charms... truly whatever you wish." And should they choose to take a more abstract approach, well… this was their learning space more than it was hers. Whatever made them happy.
While she was explaining, Roulan expanded on the sketch in front of her. Adding the word 'Lum' to the bottom of her tree where the roots should have been, and then adding into where the leaves should have been the words 'Lumos', 'Lumos Maxima', 'Illuminator' and adding a little fallen apple beneath that had 'Nox' written on it. With that completed, she held up the piece of paper again for the students to see. "Let me know if you have any questions or anything of the like! Again, any of the books on the shelves can be used as reference. And feel free to work in groups or pairings as well instead of everyone having to create their own trees. I will be moving among you for assistance, if needed." She offered another smile, before standing from her seat again - leaving her paper on the table as she began to move about the room.
OOC: Hello, hello! Thank you for joining us! :3 This is an informal activity so if anyone hasn’t posted yet but wants to jump in, feel free to have your character arrive late or you can just state they’ve been there the whole time. For the now, Roulan is just hoping the students will work on creating a plan for what they want to place on the wall. They can work alone, pairs, groups, the whole room.. whatever! There will be about 3 OOC days of this planning period before we move on to popping open the painting and letting the kids go wild. Let me know if you have any questions! Or if your character does, Roulan will be moving around the room as a resource. Thank you!

Ary tapped his wand on the paperclip, reverting it to its original state at the exact moment Bry walked in. He spared her a glance before returning to his task. It was frustrating not being able to manipulate this clip to the shapes he needed it to be. He only paused briefly to offer Bry a smile when she sat beside him. Did he want a bite of the brownie? In response, Ary simply leaned in and took a nibble out of the snack. Others might find this surprising or gross but Ary and Bry had grown up together; he had known her literally all his life and they usually shared their snacks in this way. “Thanks. A mandrake.” The boy did not say whom it was for since he knew Bry did not like Drake very much, but he suspected she’d figure it out anyway.
Thankfully, Roman arrived. At the Feast, Ary had thought he would have gotten ever so often mixed up with the names of Rowan and Roman. This had not been the case. “Hi, Roman.” That was his dorm mate, yup. Then there was Emmie. Ary lifted a hand in her direction, giving her a two finger wiggle wave.
With the professor getting started, Ary tucked the bent and out-of-shape paperclip into his pocket. Because he had so much time in the Cabana reading through the books, he easily followed all that professor Liu was saying about the correlation between Latin and Charms. Tilting his head to the left, Ary tried to follow along as best as he could to the instructions. Her demonstration made it easier for him to do so.
He looked automatically at Bry, then at Roman. He didn’t mind working as a trio. “Expellere comes to mind,’’ he told them, recalling this from the book he was currently reading. “Ex means out, pellere means to drive.” They could use ‘ex’ as their root word if they wanted, since that would make things simpler. Expelliarmus was a good spell to start with.

Aurora Ackerly was not late.
Okay maybe she was but she would point out that it was entiiiiirely her fault. You see she had accidentally slept in that morning meaning that she had to go help herself to breakfast in the kitchens which then got her into an entirely too long conversation with the poor House Elves. Before she knew it, the time had progressed and she had to do a sort of skip run to the Charms Cabana in order to join in with that day’s activities.
It wasn’t like Aurora could just silently slip her way in either, or rather she could but that would involve her being quiet and everyone knew that this third year was anything but. “Hi Professor!” she beamed trying to disguise the huffing and puffing from her little expedition as she plopped down in a random seat somewhere. She would’ve made the observation over there being so many first years only she was so vertically challenged herself that they didn’t exactly look small in comparison to her.
The thirteen year old knew very little about Latin but the call on the Noticeboard suggesting that they might just get messy had piqued her interest enough to find out what it was all about. She wasn’t very good at artwork either so her rendition of a tree was likely to look like a cartoon cloud with a trunk sticking out the bottom but nevermind. What she WAS good at however was enthusiasm which she had in abundance. Unfortunately being late meant that she had heard very little of Professor Liu’s explanation to the activity, hence the slightly perplexed look on her face as she glanced around to take a nosey at what the other students were up to.
Maybe if she could just attach herself to someone else she might have a clue?

Delighted giggles slipped past Bryony's lips when Professor Liu returned the finger wiggles greeting. How fun was that?! "I'm a fan of most sweets." Not that she needed more sugar with how hyper she was all on her own. "The middle pieces are the very best. Which ones do you like, professor?" Bry tilted her head slightly in curiosity. In her opinion the middle pieces were always the softest.
Did this eleven year olds smile grow even brighter when Ary gave her a smile? It sure did, just like always without fail. "Welcome", Bry replied, finally taking a bite of the brownie in her hand once Ary had taken his small nibble first. Where this may have bothered some, it didn't bother her one bit. The two of them were as close as close could be since birth. A mandrake. There was no need for the blonde to ask who that paperclip creature was for. "It looks good." There was always praise for his work, nothing else needed to be said about it though.
Both Roman and Emmie received finger wiggles when they sat down at the table with Ary and her. "Hey, Roman. Hey, Emmie. More may have been said to them if Professor Lui hadn't started speaking right then about what they were going to be doing.
Truthfully speaking, Bry was a bit lost. Something about spells, Latin and roots. She was listening and following along as the professor drew her little diagram but she still found it somewhat confusing. Luckily for her, Aryan seemed to have a good idea about what was going on and was taking the lead here. Excuse her tiny self while she beamed at him, listening closely to what he was saying and trying to make better sense of that.
"I think I'm following along with what you're saying.." she very slowly nodded her head as she replayed his words over again in his head.

Days of Potter 2023:___________________________ Which Bertie Botts Flavour Are You?
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Mess is the point
Sohrin had no idea what Mitsuki meant by that statement, but it didn't stop him from smiling as she stood by his side. He was initially intimidated by her, but he quickly realized that she was quite cool.
He was not only dressed comfortably, but he also felt comfortable in it. "I agree, professor," he replied before listening to what she had to say to Mitsuki. As the Professor mentioned a 'moomoo', his face became confused."Uhm...Professor, do you have a cow in your office? Isn't it better for the cow to be at the barns?"
As the explanation of today's activity began, Sohrin quickly took a seat and listened to what the Professor had to say, he realized that there was a lot of information he tried his best to absorb the information but soon found himself playing with the silver ring around his finger. When the Ravenclaw noticed that the people around him had begun to move, he looked at the white wall aka the blank canvas, and wondered if he could dip his fingers in the paint and paint the wall like that.
But first, he needed a design so he grabbed a piece of paper and a pencil and ....looked over at what the others were going to make so he could draw inspiration from them.
She wouldn't be late to a charms activity/been here all along! xD

Desiree’s curiosity was piqued when she saw the activity notice on the Hufflepuff noticeboard, especially the attire guidelines. While she used to panic when she saw a notice that said, “wear something you wouldn’t mind getting dirty”, now it just made her giggle. Didn’t the professors know by now that she would never not mind getting dirty, no matter what she was wearing? She wondered what they could possibly do that would get them dirty today. Charms wasn’t usually a messy subject, judging by the five terms’ worth of lessons already under her belt. Not like Herbology or COMC!
Whatever it was, she came prepared, dressed comfortably, fashionably and - as always - Disney inspired. Today’s inspiration: Vanellope Von Schweetz from Wreck-it Ralph. She wore a dark skirt, green and white striped leggings, boots, and an oversized hoodie. The only difference was that her hoodie was black instead of green and had already been splattered with paint from a flying activity a few terms back. Her dark hair was tied in a high ponytail with a red hair tie and plenty of candy-shaped barrettes.
Desiree smiled to herself upon walking into the charms cabana (a place with which she was well acquainted, given her affinity for the subject) to find an array of sweets laid out. Apparently she picked the right Disney character today! As she helped herself to a few candies, she greeted Professor Liu and thanked her for the sweets. Everybody else got a smile and a wave in the way of greeting.
She took a seat, listening intently to the directions. Her bright blue eyes lit up when she heard they would be painting the wall. She already had an idea forming. What if she did something that looked like the stained glass in Beauty and the Beast? Not that exact scene but something in that style… Oops, she was getting ahead of herself! The rest of the instructions involved trees and Latin root words. Never mind that idea then!
Absentmindedly wiggling her pencil back and forth, she stared at the blank paper until an idea came to her. She’d do a candy tree, in keeping with the Wreck-it Ralph theme! Professor Liu didn’t say what kind of tree to draw, right? She sketched the trunk of a candy cane tree, carefully filling in the stripes. And for the leaves, she’d have colorful gumdrops, coordinated for each type of magic. Red for charms, yellow for other types of spells, purple for magical artifacts, and pink (her favorite color) for any charms she invented herself. Now she just needed a Latin root word to work with. She picked up one of the books, flipping through it to give her some ideas.

Ruari was listening but he was also reading. He could do both, perhaps not well, but that was a whole other story, morning glory. The latin book he'd taken up was a fine tome of brushed over leather, gold edges and flowing script within. It was the kind of book which would make a bookworm foam at the mouth, and bring a teenager pain. Ruari liked reading well-enough, though not as much as the next Ravenclaw, but considering the the task at hand, he was eager to acquaint himself.
"This is pretty cool, professor." creating spells? painting? playing around under the guise of additional learning? it was his cup of tea. Before he'd grab a sketchbook and start drawing, the seventh year would begin by looking for charms he wanted to incorporate and what ones he'd like to invent.
Various other students arrived, and Roman didn’t feel the need to greet anyone he hadn’t already greeted. There was an older kid donning the Ravenclaw colors in his tie that passed a remark about the class being “short,” and it didn’t escape Roman’s thinking. He was basically commenting on the amount of first years.
The older boy got an exasperated look at this.
As Professor Liu explained the activity, Roman actually found the thought process interesting. Root words were something he was familiar with, being fluent in both English and French, and he knew some Latin solely BECAUSE of what Professor Liu was explaining - magic. Spells.
Aryan had already started thinking, and Roman nodded in agreement. “I think that’s an excellent spell to use, you’re right,” he responded softly. “And if EX is one of the roots, we can also include expulso…the spell that causes an explosion. I assume the other room is PULSO or something similar, but let me see - “ Roman pulled the Latin book to see if it was, in fact, a root. “Ah, ‘-puls’ is the Latin word. It means to push or drive, which makes sense in the context of the what the spell does. The explosion isn’t just BOOM. It causes the explosion by pushing out air.” He explained before nodding at Arya and Bryonly, and looking at this Emmie girl as well. If they were a four-person group, so be it. Roman didn’t mind.

The friendly Hufflepuff girl {Desiree} received a small, somewhat shy smile from him. He only knew her by sight but she seemed like a nice girl. As Bry turned her attention to the brownie now, his thoughts were whirling in his head. Bry wasn’t stupid; she already knew that his intended creation would be given to Drake.
During a point of time that professor Liu was explaining the activity, Ary happened to glance over at his girl best friend. He read her expressions correctly to ascertain that she was confused. No worries, Bry, he had it covered and he’d do his best to explain. For Roman too, if needed. Yet, he need not worry for his simple explanation did seem to help both his partners for this activity. He could not have been happier, to be honest.
Beaming, he bobbed his head in reply to Roman’s words. “Yes, exactly.” It seemed as though they would be working with Ex as their root word. Using a pencil and paper, he began making jotting spells the trio had come up with so far. “Expelliarmus and Expulso. Any suggestions, Bry?” he asked before nodding at Roman. “I like your description,’’ he continued, his imagination running wild as he pictured a huge, rather booming explosion. “Um. Should we each draw a tree? Or do you think it would be best to work on one tree together?”

Mitsuki would have used 'young' to describe the current collection of students seeing as height was not a very reliable indication of age and she herself was on the petit side for a sixth year. Ultimately such observations and word choices were subjective according to perspective and thus Mercer got a pass from her for his whit and the wink. It was not until Professor Liu addressed her that her gaze shifted from her fellow Ravenclaw and back towards the front of space. She was confused by the professor's concerns - it wasn't that Mitsuki had not read the noticed and heeded the warning regarding attire. She was following instructions, wearing that which she did not mind getting a bit dirty - though she may at least shed the outer robe before getting to it. She also flickered a quick glance towards Mercer when Professor Liu directly contradicted something he had said and was somberly reminded of the discussion that had had last term regarding Hufflepuffs and the words of their Hogwarts departed friend. Hmmm. "Understood, Professor Liu."
Understood...and concerns respectfully dismissed as her attention went back to the book in her hand as she leafed through the pages a bit. She was not looking for anything in particular and yet looking for something specific to catch her attention. "Lumen, lum, and luc," Mitsuki muttered mostly to herself as she flipped another page. It was already quite clear to her what root word she desired to work with and her continued casual research was simply to appease her curiosity for another couple of moments. "Aqua," she stated simply as she closed the book and set it on her desk while glancing to Mercer and then a very brief one towards Sohrin. The little third year, Aurora, likewise received a cautionary sort of glance before standing and approaching the wall while the rest of her peers settled with sketching and brainstorming on paper and sketchbooks. Her art did not manifest in such a way and was more decisive, working with the paint and brush regardless of unintentional drips or strokes. Being confined to the parameters of a sketch or line art had never had their appeal.
Grabbing a couple of towels, a small bucket, and one of the brown paints from the array of colors while the professor walked around, the sixth year strolled confidently over to the wall. First thing was to fill her bucket with a bit of water, which she did using one of the spells that would service as one of the roots to her tree, and then began soaking one of the towels in it before wringing it out and wiping it across the bottom of the wall where she intended to work.

Alissa would have attended the Charms activity even without the promise of snacks, but they were definitely an added bonus. She arrived in casual clothes she wouldn't mind getting dirty as instructed; a pair of jeans and a t-shirt bearing a quote from a muggle television show. When she arrived she made a beeline right for the snack table to see what the options were. She piled a few chocolates and a handful of pretzels onto a napkin, and stood idly snacking as she listened to the Professor explain the activity. Okay, she was into it. She liked the idea of thinking through latin roots as they related to spells, and was even more interested in the idea of thinking of their own incantations. She'd always thought the idea of creating new spells was cool. They had to come from somewhere.
After the explanation she made her way to a table. Many of them were filled with first years. While she wouldn't mind working with a first year she didn't want to be the oldest in a group. Too much pressure. Instead she sat herself down in a chair at a table with an older Ravenclaw boy (Ruari). She recognized him as in her house, but hadn't actually spoken to him before. There was no better time than the present. "Hello," she greeted cheerfully as she sat, setting her snacks down in front of her. She noticed the book of latin roots in front of him, and as she hadn't noticed where they were actually supposed to get them from, she just assumed that it was for the table to share. "Are you looking at any word in particular?"
Emmie was distracted by Roman's arrival at the table with Bry and Ary and she shot him a smile as she chirped. "Hi Roman! Do you like charms too?" It was then that her focus was brought back to Professor Liu who's question made Emmie's mouth suddenly dry up. After coughing slightly or she wouldn't have been able to say a word she responded cautiously, but kindly "I am settling in slowly Professor Liu. It's been easier with the help of my friends." Emmie said with a glance over at Bry and Ary, but she also shot a thought to Pheobe who wasn't there.
Why did everyone do finger wiggles? Was it the way of the Hoggies youth to finger wiggle, and not wave properly that she just hadn't learned yet? It was confusing first Ary and then Bry did it and now that older hufflepuff girl (Desiree) too. Emmie shot Desiree a smile, and a little wave in return before she turned to join in the Ex spells discussion at her table saying to Ary, Bry and Roman. "There is also Expecto Patronum that can be added in to our tree plan. Expecto means I await and Patronum means protector. It'd be awesome if we could make the tree big, strong and beautiful as a protector is or we could have each of our favourite animal that might be our patronus animal in the future on the canvas too." There were lots of possibilities. "I'm open to either idea, you guys can pick. We can each do our own tree, but doing one big tree together would be super fun." It was always more fun when creating things to do it together since you could work off each others ideas.
Oh look, another first year Slytherin. Making a bit more of an effort than she usually would have, Sloane nodded towards Florence as she joined the table but chose to ignore the offer of a cookie as the informal lesson was about to begin.
As she listened, her eyebrows briefly raised as the professor mentioned that they could leave if they didn’t want do the activity, which was kind of surprising even if the lesson wasn’t exactly compulsory. Either Professor Liu had supreme confidence in how interesting her lesson was or they simply just didn’t care, both of which impressed Sloane. She’d given her text books a quick perusal on the train and when she was bored so she’d heard that a lot of the spells were based on old Latin words but this lesson seemed to take it one step further. No really knowing much or caring about Latin, Sloane briefly considered just peacing out of the lesson all together and just going back to the common room. At least that way, she could actually enjoy her spare time and not learn about a dying language. The respect the Professor had earned from offering them the option to leave had however stayed her for the moment, if only briefly.
With a small sigh, she turned towards both Henrietta and Florence and pulled a piece of paper and pencil towards herself from the middle of the table. Before actually drawing her tree however, she grabbed her charms textbook from her backpack and began flipping through it with an uninterested look, looking for some kind of spell to focus on. Eventually, she came to a stop and underlined the spell Alohomora. The book did mention that it was derived from the Latin words Aloha and Komora which mean “hello” and “goodbye.” This was however a confusing on many levels. Holding her hand up for some help, Sloane waited for the Professors attention patiently before voicing her questions. “Professor, the spell in the book mentions that it comes from the Latin words for hello and goodbye but the spell actually opens things.” her finger pointing to the page, showing the explanation in the book. “Why does it open things if it means hello? Shouldn’t it like, greet someone or do something else?” she continued, pausing for a moment briefly before asking a further question. “And because this word has two different Latin roots, would I put them as one root or two separate roots?” As she considered her own question further however, she just shook her head and frowned a little. “Y’know, never mind. I’ll just use two roots for it,” unaware that she’d just word vomited her thought process out loud for all to hear. She did however, look up at the professor patiently for an answer to her first few questions, her grey eyes peering out from her hood which was still up, keeping her ears toasty warm.
