Default Divination Lesson One

The tower was a bit cooler in the first of November chill still, but as you climbed through the door you will find that the room is set up almost like it always was and a warm cozy feeling can soon be found. The sent of lavender lightly fills the air. Desks are set up so students sit four to a table instead of the normal two. This is because in the back of the room you will find a line of dressing stations and hanging from the wall you will see clothes from casual to dress robes, scarves, and all forms of different shoes, ties, and even hair bows.

Professor Kitridge can be found sitting on her desk with a smile on her face greeting each student with a snap as they come in. The board reads to have a seat and take out some parchment and a quill to get ready for the lesson that will be happening in just a moment.

Mamie wrinkled her nose in concentration and looked Ivy up and down, looking for something to judge comment on. She really liked the color of Ivy's sweater, but she was pretty sure that wasn't what their professor was going for with this activity. She perked up when ivy said she had put her left leg in first. "I put my left leg first too!" she mused. Did this mean they had something important in common? Mamie wasn't sure, she didn't quite understand stol...stolimancy?

After a few minutes of thinking, Mamie pointed at Ivy's long sleeve. "Your sleeves are longer than your arms," she said. To be fair, they were first years, most of their clothes were probably too big for all of them. "So you have room to grow!" She paused, thinking for another minute. "Maybe you like...you like being challenged...with experiences that make you grow as a person!" Was that a logical conclusion? Was she doing this right? Mamie glanced over at the professor, doubtful she had heard but still hoping for affirmation somehow.

Mamie looked down at her own slightly too big outfit with puffy sleeves and belted pants and slip on shoes. She liked it quite well, but wondered what an outside pair of eyes would think.
Huh... that was kind of interesting, that they put their pants on the same way. Except that meant they were both about to lose something valuable which didn’t sound like a fun day in the dorms. As Mamie provided her analysis of the outfit, Ivy’s eyebrows rose a little bit in surprise. That sounded super insightful, but it was also kind of silly, and she bit her lip to stifle a giggle. This whole thing felt kind of silly if she was being honest with herself, but it was an assignment so she would do what she was told. [b]”That’s... Yep... that is probably it. Very... creative!” Ivy finally landed on that word feeling it was appropriate for the situation.

Tapping her quill to her lips again, Ivy took a minute to look over Mamie’s outfit. She had clearly put more effort into choose hers. It was a bit big, but she had managed to make it work. ”Um... well your shirt is kind of baggy, but you turned into ya know like a whole look when you added the belt - like it’s big on purpose,” she observed. ”So maybe that means, like, something unexpected is going to happen in your life, but you are going to adapt to it and use it to your advantage...?” she hypothesized. Seemed legit.

"But within the Divination field, are there any practices that are considered less official or...effective...or sillier than others?" She hoped Kitridge knew what she was asking. She, again, was curious to learn what her mother thought about it all.

Now...she needed a partner...but she didn't know who? Avalon? Anyone?
"I would definitely say there are studies out there showing that some are or aren't effective, but it also depends on the source you are asking. In my opinion all the forms should be respected in their own sense. Many can be linked with others to find deeper readings, while some stand alone as very successful. The best way to answer that questions is to say to be open minded and do your own research and see what your gut tells you on which ones you feel more drawn to and which you think are not to be bothered with." Giving the bright young girl a smile, she enjoyed when students questioned, that was a great way to know they were learning and thinking.

In class?! The nerve!!

"Professor," she piped up as everyone seemed to be breaking into pairs for something, "can I go use the restroom? I--- there's something in my eye." She blinked several dozen times for effect so Kitridge could see.

"Yes, go ahead, but quickly please." She didn't want any accidents in the class.

But she couldn't run away now. First, she was wearing clothes that did not belong to her. And second, running away now would be too obvious. For a brief moment, Crimalla pondered using her co0ld as an excuse to leave. It would have been a good excuse - totally understandable! Professor Kitridge was such a kind teacher that surely she wouldn't be mad.

But some scruples inside her made her decide not to go that way. If Kitridge was a mean professor, then she wouldn't have felt guilty lying. But she wasn't, and in fact she'd just given everyone five points. It would be wrong to deceive her - even if not doing so would lead to embarrassment.

So instead Crimalla turned to shyly regard the two others sitting at her table.Cecelia and Kinsay. "Who should be partner, professor?" she asked in a low, trembling voice.
[b] "You can pair with anyone in the room. I don't mind if there are three to a group either.

Glancing at her watch she realized they needed to keep moving. "Alright everyone, was it harder to figure out just looking at another person? What do you think could help with reading other people this way?" She moved around the room looking at each student.

"As you answer that I would like you all to head to the back and change into your uniforms again. When you are done I want you to just think about those questions I had asked at the beginning after you had dressed in the outfits you are in now." She gave a few snaps of approval before calling the first person that put their hand up.

OOC: Thank you for sticking with me everyone! We will move on to the final part of the lesson in about 24 hours.

Was Carsyn confused? Absolutely. It made pretty much zero sense as to why they were doing a clothing exercise in Divination and well wasn't this basically judging people on their appearance?? She had begrudgingly worked through the activities, fighting the urge to comment anything that would get her into detention.

Quote:
If wearing pants, which leg do you put in first? Right.
If wearing a dress or dress robes did you put it on wrong by mistake? What's the wrong way?
If you have a tie which hand do you use to loop it? No
Are your shoelaces tied or untied? No shoelaces.
If a button down shirt did you get all the buttons evenly? Yes.
Did you pick something to blend in or stand out? STAND OUT ALWAYS!
Oh, the standout question has nothing to do with Divination. Okay then. The predictions she only had one of them which was about financial gain, apparently.... Did that mean, what exactly? She'd make it as a professional baker? A professional seeker? Perhaps playing pro quodpot with Lucy? So much unanswered here that wasn't really helpful except that she wasn't going to go broke.

It was when she heard the Professor's voice that Carsyn realized she had zoned out for goodness knew how long and she blinked. "I don't think there's anything to be gained from reading people this way. There's better ways to make predictions." That was all she had to say about the topic. Unless further questioning was induced.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

"Actually, I think what we're wearing and how we wear it is more important than if we put our left leg first or whatever. I think you can use clothing to figure out people's personality, but putting your left foot first leading to financial trouble is a stretch in my opinion." Ashley was just being honest. She seriously doubted that most of these predictions would come true. She begrudgingly got back into her uniform. However much she didn't believe in divination-by-clothing, it was fun to wear something other than her uniform. She didn't mind not keeping the outfit though, because she had about five of the same one already. It was her favorite outfit. She studied the uniform she had on. She had put it on the exact same way as the other outfit, but she had a tie now, which she tied with her left hand. Guess I'll fall in love, she thought to herself. But then again, I did that before I tied my tie, long before I even wore ties. "Professor, if someone puts their clothes on the same way every single day because consistency, how is that predicting the future? With no change in what they are wearing but varied results in what happens?"

How was it that he was so guarded around everyone else, yet an open book around her? He shook his head, reluctantly meeting her gaze with sad eyes. What should he say? He didn't mind telling her what was wrong; it was everybody else in the room that he didn't want to tell! "Read the second interpretation," he whispered as he handed her his notes, trusting she would come to the same conclusion he did upon reading the part that said, You'll be alone.

He noticed her blush and instantly looked away. It obvious that the only thing this observation had accomplished was making them both feel awkward… or maybe not. He blinked, slightly taken aback by her question, though he didn't know why. He should've guessed she'd figure things out on her own! "I did," he said, nodding in confirmation. This line of conversation got his curiosity piqued about her tie ribbon. Had he correctly guessed which hand she used to loop it? Only one way to find out! "Let's say for all intents and purposes that it does count… which hand did you use to loop it?"

Claudine's next words got a slight smile, though it didn't extend to his troubled eyes. "I hope you're right, he replied very quietly, "because if that prediction does come true… His voice trailed off as his fears of losing her returned with a vengeance. "... You know what that would do to me.

Perhaps it was not really that obvious to others that something was off with Heath but Claudine had gone to know him better over the past year so that was why she had been able to easily pick up on something being off about him. That something off turned out to be sadness. Puzzled by this realisation, she took his notes and read the second interpretation as instructed. Oh. That explained everything. Quite frankly, the girl wouldn’t mind being alone and this interpretation would not have winded her. But, not everyone was Claudine Blaze. “That’s silly,’’ she remarked calmly, handing the notes back. “You have a huge family. I’m sure you’ll have great friends too since you’re being more social. Plus…’’ The fourth year blushed a slightly deeper shade of red. “You’ll be okay with me around.’’

Moving on.

Well, since Heath had handed her his notes, the exercise was sort of rendered useless. This was the exact reason why Claudine had thought that it was completely pointless. Here was Heath about to tell her something she already knew. “Left, I believe.’’ Claudine shrugged, unconcerned.

Yes, she did know what it would do to him. “Divination isn’t reliable,’’ Claudine repeated firmly.

Yes, she did know what it would do to him. “Divination isn’t reliable,’’ Claudine repeated firmly.

One thing most people didn't’ know about Heath was that he didn’t particularly like being alone; he just accepted it as a necessary evil to avoid ridicule. Having friends and a big family was great most of the time, but others, it made him feel even more alone than ever. The people in his life didn’t understand him, except… He managed a slight smile at Claudine’s words. Seeing her blush like that brought a pink tinge to his cheeks too, and he bowed his head so that his hair would hide it. “I know,” he said when he finally found his voice.

It didn’t occur to him that he made the activity useless by giving Claudine his notes. He was just trying to let her know what was bothering him without the rest of the class overhearing. His expression changed as she answered his question. Oh, so he had been correct in guessing which hand she used to tie her ribbon? He wasn’t sure how to feel about that. “I trust you already know what that means,” he said. He couldn’t bring himself to say it out loud, just in case this wasn’t a load of bantha dung and it did mean she’d find love with some other guy.

Heath was glad when the lesson moved on to something else. He had no idea how to respond to Professor Kitridge’s question! Personally, he found it harder to read another person than himself. When making a prediction for yourself, you know how to answer the questions on the list, but there were some things that you couldn’t tell about another person just by looking. Asking questions could help, but it also made things super awkward! Was that the kind of answer the professor was looking for? He didn’t know and wasn’t willing to risk saying the wrong thing, so he kept his thoughts to himself as he got up to change back into his uniform.

He returned to his seat moments later, his tie clumsily knotted because he’d used his left hand to loop it this time in hopes that it would undo the prediction he got earlier. Did it work like that? Was it possible for someone who knew what the interpretations meant to manipulate their prediction by dressing a certain way? Part of him wanted to ask the professor, but he realized what a weird question it was and kept quiet.

Ivy gave Mamie a bit of a confused look. ”What do you mean something unexpected always happens...?” she asked timidly. It was just school - what unexpected thing could possibly happen?

As Mamie spoke to the professor, Ivy just nodded her head in agreement. Perhaps if she just agreed with her partner she wouldn’t actually have to give an opinion...

When it was time to get changed, Ivy gave Mamie a small smile. ”Bye, Mamie. Thanks for being my partner,” she said sincerely. Turning away from the table, she made her way back to where her belongings were waiting. She gathered up her uniform and went and changed, secretly feeling relieved to be back in the uniform. Back at her table, she began packing up her belongings. Quill, parchment, books. She hadn’t used her wand, but she checked just to make sure it was in the usual place... and it wasn’t!

”My wand! she gasped loudly. Dropping to her knees, she began searching for it all over the floor.,

Giving a glance to the quiet ones she moved on to the next hand.

The scream for a wand caught her a bit off guard and she turned to see the girl on the floor. "No need to scream. It must be around here some where." She glanced down pointed towards the wand for the first year to grab so they could move on.

"Alright class, we are almost out of time. I am sorry that some of you don't feel today's lesson was a reliable form of divination, but this class is to teach you all forms not just all the really serious ones." She wasn't upset and was fine with opinions, but she wanted to remind them why they were in the class.

"Now how many of you really thought about how you were getting dressed when you put your uniform back on?" She glanced around the room seeing which students nodded or rose their hands. "This form is very unique because if you are thinking about ways to change your future or manipulate the reading it does not work. That is why it is always good to notice things about others to do the prediction instead of doing it on yourself. The first time you dressed you just dressed the way you always do, that is why it works the first time but not typically any other time." She hoped that made sense.

"Alright my dears it is time for class to be done for today. I hope you all have a lovely rest of your day."

ooc: Thanks for coming everyone!

Violet thought a minute; that was what had occurred to her a few minutes ago. "Yes, I guess in a way I did; I don't like to draw attention most of the time. I grew up alone and didn't really have a chance to meet many people except my grandfather and uncles and my governess, until I came to Hogwarts. My first year, being around all these people made me nervous. But also, I kind of like to wear styles that have been around for a while, and that you know you can keep wearing for a long time. This is actually the kind of clothes I feel comfortable in, so I thought I'd just really be myself today." Violet was interrupted by the teacher continuing the class.

"As you answer that I would like you all to head to the back and change into your uniforms again. When you are done I want you to just think about those questions I had asked at the beginning after you had dressed in the outfits you are in now." She gave a few snaps of approval before calling the first person that put their hand up.

Violet pondered on the question and comments as she redressed in her Hogwarts uniform. Ashley made a good point--what if you put your pants on right leg first every single day of your life, and just the same, you wound up having money problems (which was bound to happen to most people once in a while). But the teacher's answer made sense, too--for example, just now she nearly forgot to put her tie back on! As she returned to her seat, she heard the teacher continuing.

That was right, for sure--Violet thought she would probably never forget which leg of her pants to put on first the next time she wore them.

Wow, class was done already. Violet had thought she would dread it, but it was over before she knew it. In fact, it was actually not to bad; it was actually kind of fun. And here Violet had been thinking this term that she would never have fun again.

"Goodbye, Professor Kitridge; thanks for class," she said as she passed the professor on her way out the door. She waved to Ashley and Mamie as she left.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Ashley nodded. She understood what violet meant; Ashley had just picked what she wanted to wear. She contemplated the teacher's words. "So if I purposely use my left leg every day, it will have no effect, and I can do whatever I want without my clothes having an effect on it. I think so anyway." She hypothesized aloud. Great. Ashley would not like to end up forever alone based on which hand she tied her tie with. Or maybe it was just a foreshadowing of what was to come, in which case she would prefer not to know. She shrugged and picked up her bag. This had been fun. She didn't get the actual lesson, but the fashion show had been interesting. As she left, she contemplated the "you will find love" prediction. She recalled a certain memory, where a little kid version of her paddled out on her surfboard to another little kid who was going too far out so that he wouldn't drown. She took that thought out of her head real fast. Love was dumb. Well, it wasn't dumb, but it sure was annoying. Don't think about a certain muggle person who you like, Ashley, she reminded herself. Now was not the time. In fact, now was never the time. She waved at Mamie and Violet on her way out.

In the midst of her mild panic, Ivy heard Professor Kitridge’s voice behind her and looked around to see her pointing toward the floor a few tables away. Ivy scurried over on her knees in relief and picked up the wand. Before she could even bring it out into the light she knew it wasn’t hers. It felt all wrong in her hand, and her wand felt like... like it was always supposed to have been there. She laid the stray wand down on the table and sighed.

Picking up her things, she made her way out of the classroom. She’d just have to re-trace her steps...

Crimalla changed out of her scarlet turtleneck shirt and back into her school robes and scarf. When she was done, she approached professor Kitridge and waited until everyone else had finished their discussions and were heading towards the exit doors. "Professor?" she asked timidly, speaking softly so as not to attract attention from the other students. "Thank you for the interesting lesson. I enjoyed putting on different outfits. The scarlet turtleneck might have cold germs on it since I was wearing it. I wasn't sure how to charm the germs off." She didn't want anyone else to catch her cold - there was no one she disliked that much!

Claudine shrugged again. “I don’t know what any of this means.’’ She was being honest with him as always. The girl knew one thing for sure: she made the happenings in her life; she was responsible for them and there was no way Divination could predict them accurately all of the time. Lost in reassuring Heath, Claudine failed to realise that Kitridge had actually overheard her words. Oop. When Kitridge did actually mention it out aloud, the fourth year arranged her face in a blank expression. Naturally, she was entitled to her own opinion.

In all honesty, Claudine was reluctant to change out of the outfit; she rather did adore it but now that they were leaving the class, it was only right that she be back in uniform. After making an additional note about when the predictions usually were accurate, she gathered up her belongings. Claudine threw Heath a questioning glance. “Are you coming with me or do you have somewhere else to be?’’ See, she didn’t mind his company a while longer. Figuring that he’d catch up if necessary, she started to head out. “Bye, Professor.’’

Heath noticed the tight smile Professor Kitridge gave Claudine, but it was only when he heard her words that he realized she overheard what she said. He felt terrible; here he was causing her trouble again, just like in DADA! Well, not exactly like DADA… fortunately, Professor Kitridge didn’t take points or give her a detention. If she had, he would’ve had to explain that the only reason she said that was to reassure him and beg her to take points from him instead. Not here, obviously - he didn’t want to draw attention to her - but after class. He shot Claudine an apologetic look. It’s no wonder you’re going to end up alone, he inwardly berated himself, if you keep causing her trouble like this!

He blinked confusedly at the professor’s next question. As a matter of fact, he had thought about that - just look at his tie! Where was that question going? He had no idea and didn’t want to be put on the spot for his answer, so he gave no indication that he had. Oh, so that’s where it was going… HIs heart sank as the professor answered the question he’d been too afraid to ask. So there was no way to undo that awful prediction. Of course, he should’ve known…

He managed a small smile at Claudine’s question. At least that prediction wasn’t coming true today! “Of course,” he replied, gathering up his things. As he followed her out the door, he paused a moment to say goodbye to the professor. “Bye, Professor. Thank you for the lesson.”
