It's bright and early on the first morning of classes. 8 a.m. to be exact. Did you take the Headmaster's words seriously about a good night's sleep? No matter, the lesson will take place regardless of your level of fatigue.
Entering the classroom, you'll find nothing out of the ordinary, which in itself may be a bit out of the ordinary for the man who typically enjoys immersive scenery in his lessons. Speaking of, The Headmaster stands by the window, looking out on the grounds. Across from him, on the blackboard, is a sign that says:
Quote:
Refrain from unnecessary and incessant chatter. This is not the Great Hall, this is a classroom. Catch up with your friends on your own time.
The desks are arranged in rows and most of the curtains are drawn. In fact, the majority of the lighting comes from candles and the window through which the Headmaster is looking. Come in and do as your told.
OOC: Welcome to the first DADA lesson!! Don't forget to read the classroom rules before posting. I'll have the first question up in 24-28 hours
"You have talent for dueling" he complimented as Ashley slid over the floor, an amused expression on his face. His amusement vanished when he realized that the ropes around her arms had loosened though and he could see it on her face that she was planning another attack.
Ashley's colloshoo spells were dodged but a stray spell from one of the other students (Bernie) had hit his feet while he was busy dodging . He had not seen that coming. Shoes stuck to the floor, Minjae tried to move but it was no use. Now, he could simply use a finite but this would give the little first year a bit of chance. not really
"I honestly don't know" he called as if nothing was wrong and he used a shield charm to protect himself from the full body-bind curse again."I just wanted to see if i could do it. Basically, you were guinea pig" he said and waved his wand after pointing them to the antlers and set them on fire with an "Incendio" as a scare tactic and followed it up with another "Expelliarmus!"
"Why thank you," Ashley said. A compliment! Ashley had never had one before. She dodged another expelliarmus and somehow her horns were on fire. She tried again. "PETRIFICUS TOTALUS!" She looked pretty scary with the burning antlers. Unfortunately for the first year, one of the flames caught onto her non-wand arm. Fortunately her sleeves were rolled up. Unfortunately again, her arm was now burning. "AHHH!" Guess who didn't know any water spells. Fortunately, the flames put themselves out. Unfortunately for the third time, she now had a very burned arm. She could barely hold her wand with her good arm, which was shaking as it held her crispy right arm. Her horns were still burning. This was a weird place to be at 8 am on the first day of school.

He knew that was a trick question all along; he’d only failed to guess how it was meant to trick him. It didn’t matter what he thought of the elder wand anyway. What were the odds that he’d ever find himself in a position to potentially master it? And even in the extremely unlikely event that happened, he wouldn’t want it, and no amount of harsh words from the headmaster could change his mind! That kind of power changed people, as Headmaster Trent had shown them all this lesson.
Up until now, Heath had been willing to give Trent the benefit of the doubt, but every word out of his mouth made it harder to excuse his newfound heartlessness. He no longer cared why he was acting this way; off day, emotional trauma, or otherwise, nothing justified that! Ugh, of course he would praise Upchuck over there… probably the only person in the room as ruthless as himself. It was all Heath could do to keep up his stoic facade and not roll his eyes. Just when he thought he couldn’t be any more appalled, the headmaster said that sentence: It's not bullies who come after you, it is wizards of equal ambition. As far as Heath was concerned, the only people who would think that either are fortunate enough to never have experienced bullying or are bullies themselves.
His trust in the headmaster now all but gone, Heath listened to the instructions for the next activity… and of course there was another cruel twist to it. He was past the point of being surprised by it. Resigned to the fact that he would probably be going without his wand, he looked around the room for a potential partner. Whatever, he would survive. He grew up mostly in the muggle world, so he was used to doing things without magic. At least that was better than having to take someone else’s wand, especially…
Heath’s heart sank when Claudine asked to be partners again. Truth be told, he would have rather partnered with someone else this time, not because of her or anything she’d done, but because he did not want to be responsible for taking her wand, especially after he’d already caused her so much trouble this class! Still, he hadn’t the heart to reject her. I could never be tired of you, he thought, but no way in Hoth was he saying that out loud, not with the headmaster in close proximity! Instead, he replied with a small nod.
This time, he didn’t try to establish any ground rules, He would abide by the same ones from the last activity, but Claudine was free to do whatever she wanted. Whatever she did to him, he probably deserved it for trying to play the hero and getting them both into trouble. He was not making that mistake again! This time, he would hold his own until either she got his wand or time ran out. “Expelliarmus,” he said, aiming his wand. Come on, block it! He thought. You can do it, Claudine!
It turned out that Heath wasn’t tired of her. What surprised her was that she hadn’t expected him to be. [i]Wow.[i/] Could it be? Had Claudine actually put her trust fully in someone for once. She shook off the thought, deciding that she would figure out her own question later. Her frustration with Trent was pushing her determination; that determination to show him that she was a good student and didn’t deserve to be talked down to or to be handed an essay just because she had opted to not answer a question.
When their time came, Claudine faced Heath, her face blank. She hoped he would duel to the best of his abilities without trying to protect her. Did they have to do the whole bowing thing? Never mind. Heath was coming for her.
“Protego.’’ Her wand raised and the offensive spell was immediately blocked with ease. “Langlock!’’ The Ravenclaw hadn’t mastered Non Verbal spells yet so the purpose of the Langlock spell was get Heath’s tongue stuck to the roof of his mouth then Claudine could have him disarmed without an issue.
Mamie tried to watch and remember all the spells the pairs before her used in her duel, but when it was her and Avalon's turn and the older student raised her wand, all the spells she had heard went straight out of her brain. Nope. Magic wasn't going to be helpful.
She dropped to the ground.
Expelliarmus? Is that what Avalon had said? From the ground, Mamie raised her wand. She had no clue what this spell did. Hopefully it would do something. "Expelliarmus!" she shouted, waving her wand above her head in Avalon's general direction. Was that right?
Why was she....on the ground? Avalon looked at her partner somewhat confusedly, which as a result reduced the strength of her disarming spell. Plus, now that Mamie had dropped to the floor, Avalon's aim was totally off. Before she could think of what to do next, the Hufflepuff was throwing the spell right back at her. "Protego!" Avalon exclaimed instinctively, just in case Mamie's expelliarmus happened to work. Wand still in hand, she shot another spell toward the first year. "Impedimenta!" Perhaps the impediment jinx would keep the Hufflepuff on the ground for another few moments. Avalon considered sending a stunning spell her way, as that would surely give her the opportunity to grab Mamie's wand. But that might be a little too extreme. She didn't want to scare the first year too much.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Instead of scary, he thought she looked pretty epic with those burning antlers. Like a main boss in a RPG game. Except smaller. Quickly pointing his wand at his own feet, the teenager casted a finite at his stuck feet and jumped sideways as another petrificus totalus was send his way. She REALLY had to try something else then that!
His initial plan had been to grow the antlers so that it would have been too heavy to carry. But the changes the spell would have hit her face instead were too high and he didn't want her to get hurt. Expect, she did get hurt and as Ashley held her burned arm he realized he had gone too far.
His adrenaline was gone, his will to WIN was softened and he pointed his wand at her antlers, using the water charm to extinguish the fire before he pocketed his wand in the holster within his robe and ran towards her. "I'm sorry! i didn't mean to hurt you" he said. "Are you okay? hold out your arm, i promise i won't take your wand" he added. "This is stupid" he muttered under his breath and glanced over to the NOT Headmaster before taking out his wand. "Take it, i can deal without magic for a week. I trust you will take care of it" he refused to continue and accidentally hurt the girl.

"It's okay dude," Ashley mumbled. "It's not your fault. Actually, it is, but it was an accident. And you're very right about this being stupid." She held out her arm and sniffled a little. It had some second-degree burns. They hurt really bad, but at least they weren't third-degree burns. "I don't want your wand. You can take mine. Unless it would make you feel better I guess." She looked over at the headmaster, her eyes filling up a little bit. "UM I'm going to the healer now thank you for giving your permission." He hadn't actually given permission but she didn't care too much and she already had detention. Hopefully he wouldn't see her sneak out.

Aboli quickly put up a shield for herself and held it there in case Phoebe shot a quickfire one at her again, but nope. This was a pretty clean fight, actually. Should she take it up a notch? Try to get this over with quickly? There was actually NO way she was going to let a fourth year win, and Phoebe had all but said she didn't MIND losing, so she didn't feel AS bad about...you know..................winning.
Aboli then shot three different spells, in succession at the fourth year. Hopefully one of them would make contact. "Tarantallegra! Steleus! LEVICORPUS!"
... "I also would pay you to just give your wand, you know," she said after twirling her wand and giving it a blow from her lips, as if it had grown hot from the three spells. "That way..........I feel less terrible. For eventually defeating you!"
Aboli went from trying to disarm her to trying to MURDER her all at once, and it was quite disheartening. DID SHE KNOW THAT SHE HAD FORGOTTEN HER ENTIRE THIRD YEAR OF LEARNING? Most of what she couldn't remember was spellwork.
It didn't help that her sister was being attacked by Bernie across the room, and maybe a later!Phoebe could blame her inability to duel properly on the fact that she wanted to protect Kizzy. Or maybe she was just bad at duelling. Something to think on.
As it was, Phoebe wasn't prepared to throw up a shield. Like it didn't even occur to her to do it, and she stepped out of the path of the first two spells and right into the third one. Up in the air she went, her robes now dangling around her face, which was quickly turning to red. Ahem. This was undignified. And, you know, even if he put his foot down and Nem duelled Dakest again for real and somehow lost, they figured they could just steal the wand back at some point. It would be in the spirit of this Elder Wand business, at least.
But anyway.
Focusing.
Airborne wand.
Nem was ready to catch the thing, but Dakest was still making a desperate grab for it, and if there was one thing he had that Nem didn't, it was the height advantage. The guy was just unnecessarily tall. Nem had a split second - not even that - to make a decision on what to do next; cast at Dakest, or cast at the wand. Unless they had a stab at both.
And what was Nem if not ambitious?
Might as well.
"Stupefy!" The Stunner they cast at Dakest. Unlucky guy, if it hit its mark; Nem had instantly chosen it because of its snappy incantation... and maybe some other factors as well. They didn't wait to see if it worked or how well, and instead raised their wand upwards and brandished at Dakest's before someone else could swoop in for it. Risky on a moving target, but the risk was what made it interesting.
"Carpe Retractum!" No use sneaking now.
Being over six foot did have its advantages. The only problem was that his wand was still out of his reach. Even tiptoeing and jumping wasn’t helping. The panicking was getting worse by the second, starting to cloud his thinking process. Losing a duel in front of everyone would be embarrassing, but having a mental breakdown in class would be much, much worse.
It was as Lucas bent his knees to try another jump, that it happened. A jet of red light flew right above his head, only missing his hair by a few centimetres. Swearing loudly, he ducked his head slightly, placing both hands over the top of his head. Sweet Merlin, what was going ON?!
Before he could so much as comprehend what was happening, the situation only got worse. The vague sound of someone casting the Carpe Retractum spell reached his ears and, out of the corner of his eyes, he saw another jet of light. One that was rope-like and, looking up, twisting itself around his very wand.
This was NOT HAPPENING!
Amidst the panic, he could feel something bubbling up inside of him. Something that was making his heart beat faster and making the room feel much hotter than it was. The seventh year’s gaze followed the rope until it landed on the caster themselves.
But everything was happening too quickly for him to properly comprehend that this was Nemesis Upstead. The same Nemesis Upstead whose brother was best friends with Art. Instead, Lucas acted on the new feeling taking over him, causing him to do something that he probably wouldn’t do in any other situation.

Aboli did NOT know, Phoebe, NO. She was just trying to not lose yet again in this class. And in her mind, she still thought Phoebe had SORTAKINDA volunteered to lose. So why not just make it as quick and painless as possible?
As the fourth year dangled, Aboli stepped closer. She laughed a little, and nodded. "Of course I will. I never break a promise." Not that Phoebe knew her well enough to know if that were a lie or not. It wasn't, but Aboli pointed her wand at the girl. "So accept payment or force me into taking it from you by FORCE, James," she said, more force to her words than she actually felt in her heart.
Wait wait wait WAIT.
Aboli had JUST spent time getting Bernie out of detention (did the girl have detention? She had no idea. She had been too busy moping over her own) and she was NOT going to let Bernie get in more....trouble? Chaos? "Oy, don't THREATEN Bernie! That is RUDE - " she pointed her wand at Phoebe and - "EXPELLIARMUS!"
By force it was? If her spell made contact, that was.

Normally, Ivy might have been happy that the Headmaster thought her thinking in her answer was smart, but he was being so weirdly harsh today that she...wasn't sure how she felt about it. Or any of this really. She could see some of the logic behind the idea of the activities, but the execution of them? It was weird.
Losing their wand for a whole week if they lost a duel in this lesson? Which would affect all of their other lessons that required magic? It was...strange that he would be okay with that. But maybe he'd let the other professors know ahead of time so maybe they would understand? Still, considering all the fuss he'd made last term in their first lesson with the kelpies...
But she probably needed to actually get started on this activity. If she didn't get a chance to participate he might still give her a detention or take her wand himself for the rest of the term or whatever crazy weird consequences he'd made up for this dumb lesson.

Don't stick your nose up at the hand that feeds you? Was that how that expression went?
There wasn't much else to be done about it since now he needed to find himself a partner to duel this time. Duel and potentially keep their wand for the remainder of the WEEK?! Wait...wait...keep and then do whatever they wanted with it, right? Because...how the hay were they suppose do their lessons without a wand? Well, okay, SOMEWHAT rhetorical considering they had survived almost all of last year going through lessons without wands and magic, but that was also because everyone was on an even playing field of no magic and no wand. This was...this was a little ridiculous, even for an activity and lesson for teaching the so-called advantages of having the Elder Wand.
...this was just...weird.
But...he needed a partner...so............................any takers?
Fortunately, she did spot someone else who looked to be without a partner. An older student was...probably not the ideal person to make sure she kept her wand in a duel, but she'd still try her best, yeah?
"Hey, you need a partner?"

It was quite the predicament.
Which obviously meant the best plan was to find the BEST human shield in the whole classroom. That just so happened to be Headmaster Trent because he was the tallest and also the biggest! So Kizzy did what any smart, first year with absolutely no spell casting experience would do! She made a beeline for her Headmaster, trying to hide behind his legs so as to shield herself from oncoming spells. Hopefully the Headmaster would protect her. It was the best plan ever......... And the only plan ever.

She was going to be sick. Or pass out. Something, what with all the blood rushing to her head like this. Phoebe twisted in place as she tried to free herself, but she was fighting against magic, and she was losing. Fine. FINE. "Finite incantatem. FINE... FINITE. FInite IncanTATEM!" With her robes and her hair and the blood, it was nearly impossible to direct the spell at herself correctly, and the power of her casts made her spin faster.
Awful.
"I can yell at Bernie. We're very good friends and she likes it when I... look, can you just finish this? I can't feel my entire head and my hands are starting to go numb, and I might throw up, and all I basically do is embarrass myself in class. I'd prefer not to vomit." Why was she....on the ground? Avalon looked at her partner somewhat confusedly, which as a result reduced the strength of her disarming spell. Mamie started to get up after she had tried casting her spell. So, she didn't hear either spell Avalon returned and was unprepared when she got hit with the jinx. The sudden effect on her movements threw her off-balance and she fell back to the ground. Well, guess she was staying down.
She still only sort of knew the one spell though, so she could try casting that again. "Expelliarmus!" she said, though this time she couldn't aim her wand as well at Avalon.

Hearing her sister yell at Bernie helped Kinsay feel lots better. It helped to know that Fifi would protect her from the other scary fourth year. The one who was still chasing and trying to--
.......... Oops.
Kinsay looked up at the Headmaster with BIG eyes filled with FEAR. Despite her efforts of attempting to garner sympathy with her puppy-dog eyes, he was being so mean. She didn't move right away, still trying to keep herself shielded from her dueling partner. Her dueling partner who was getting into big, BIG trouble. Kizzy felt bad for her a little bit. She wouldn't want detention with HIM.
So when she inched away from the Headmaster, Kinsay looked up at Bernadette feeling very, very guilty. "Sorry for detention." She SADLY extended her wand out to the other girl. She sniffled a little, but tried her very best not to look as defeated as she felt. "You can have it. I don't know any spells yet."

But she probably needed to actually get started on this activity. If she didn't get a chance to participate he might still give her a detention or take her wand himself for the rest of the term or whatever crazy weird consequences he'd made up for this dumb lesson.
Fortunately, she did spot someone else who looked to be without a partner. An older student was...probably not the ideal person to make sure she kept her wand in a duel, but she'd still try her best, yeah?
"Hey, you need a partner?"
This right here was almost his worst nightmare. Only thing that could make the situation worse would have been if Thing 2 over there had offered to partner with him and NOT because of the stink eye she was always giving him but because she literally knew no spells and it was just not the honorable way to fight. Yes, he had heard all the la de da and blah blah blah the headmaster had said about the Elder Wand not caring about these sorts of things and it was an anything goes sort of situation...but Josh still wasn't going to compromise who he was for the sake of a lesson and some grade.
.......he wasn't pops.
And besides, he already had detention for not having a sack to hand in. Should he be worried that the man might do a sack count and find out that he was missing one? Probably but...oooooooh well.
Grimacing a smile, he nodded to the younger Ravenclaw. "I do." Which...settled the matter then, yes? Yes. "So then I guess it's you on side and then me on this end," he mumbled as he got himself into position.
So...now to begin?
He figured he ought to start off with apparently what was his signature beginning and sent a Rictusempra her direction. He probably could have just ended it all with a Disarming Charm right off the bat but...frankly...he didn't want to.

Great, she had a duelling partner! And she...wasn't going to think too hard about the outcome. She had at least included the Dueling Club as a part of her extracurriculars last term...even if they hadn't been able to do anything for half of it. So she hoped she could hold her own for a little bit. If she lost her wand, at least she had a whole half a term of practice at going without it.
Ivy took her place on her side of the arena, and - well, looked like they were off!
She dodged to the side just in time to avoid the Rictusempra spell then immediately cast her own "Immobulus!" in the Gryffindor's direction.

"HEY!"
And then he charged straight for the culprit.
Aha. Success.
With the cord of light successfully wrapped around Dakest's wand, Nem pulled their own back and reeled it in, cancelling the spell and catching it deftly. Yes, definitely a success. They glanced up.
Oh. Half success. Well, that was irritating.
Shoving Dakest's wand into their own holster, Nem beat a hasty retreat, backing away a couple of steps as Dakest began - surprisingly enough - charging them down. But then they stopped and suddenly raised their wand at him again, cool as anything, aiming right at his chest as he got closer and closer. "Flipendo Duo." It should knock him back and down, and then he would stay down, if he knew what was good for him. And then they could talk this through like adults.

He recognized her from Dueling Club, come to think of it, but in that setting they had always been paired with people in their age groups and without such an expansive age gap like...well...like right now. Josh was not the strongest when it came to spellwork and hardly had the time to put in additional effort into practice outside of what was required to gain some proficiency so a spell was actually useful.
But honestly, where was the pride or sense of accomplishment in disarming someone four years younger than you and with liiiiiiiike less than four months of actual spell practice experiences to dip into? If he was meant to play a role like he had the Elder Wand...or that she had the Elder Wand and he wanted to retrieve it...there were serious plot holes in the narrative and he could not understand his character's motivation at all. Not that he was really trying to get into a character anyway.
"Protego," he commanded, erecting the Shield Charm with a flick of the wrist and rebounded the spell right back at her. Best offense was a good defense, right? "Expelliarmus!" he then countered with.
Hey, if that had worked for Harry Potter at the Battle of Hogwarts then it was more than enough here, right?

Heath wasn’t surprised that Claudine blocked his spell, He knew she was strong and smart and more than capable of holding her own, If anything, he felt relieved. As long as she held him off, he wouldn’t have the guilt of leaving her wandless for a week on his conscience. The langlock spell, however, that did catch him off guard… of all of a fraction of a second. Oh, well played, Claudine! He thought. Unfortunately, he couldn’t let her do that to him. He rather liked his wand, and he would need his voice to keep it.
“Prote- mmph!” he began, attempting to block the spell, but he was too late. Before he could get the spell out, his tongue stuck to the roof of his mouth. It was like eating a peanut butter sandwich, only without the peanuty taste. Well, this just got a lot harder! Despite the huge setback, he would not retaliate in anger, like most everyone else seemed to be doing. It was honestly disappointing to see how quickly they turned on each other! He looked at Claudine with the faintest hint of a smile on his face to show he wasn’t mad about what had happened, but just because he wasn’t mad didn’t mean he was willing to give up!
This time, Heath aimed his wand at himself, He had never done a nonverbal spell before, but now seemed as good a time as any to try, What other choice did he have? Finite, he thought, focusing all his concentration on undoing the spell. He knew that intent was key to mastering any spell, moreso with nonverbal ones than ever. Did it work? He tried to move his tongue; it gave a little bit but was still stuck. Come on! Finite! He mentally tried again. Merlin, he hoped it worked this time! If it didn't, he would have to find another way to counter whatever Claudine had in store next.

I'd prefer not to vomit." She twisted now in the opposite direction, which was almost worse.
"Give me your wand first, and sure," she said with a cold shrug. COLD. ABOLI HAD NO FEELINGS. NONE HERE. NO GUILT AT ALL. This was fine. "I can handle vomit just fine. I have a two year old brother at home, and I think one of his favorite activities IS vomiting." Much to her mother's chagrin. HMPH.
So she held out her hand for Phoebe's wand and shot another look over at...Bernie and the sister of Phoebe. They were being fussed at by Trent, and Aboli didn't envy them at all. Had she already started formatting in her head what her essay for him would look like??? Yes. Absolutely. She just needed to get it done and out of the way for now.

Avalon was impressed. Despite being stuck on the ground, Mamie had sent another disarming spell her way. And even though her aim was off, Avalon felt a slight tug on her wand. It was impressive for a first year to know how to cast expelliarmus. Even though her cast had been a bit weak, and Avalon was able to combat it with another Protego, this girl definitely had potential. "Not bad! I may sense a future member of the Duelling Club," she said with a smile as she backed up in preparation for another cast. But she still wanted to win the duel. Prefect or not, Trent meant business, and she really didn't want to be without a wand for a week. Especially losing to a first year. That would be a bit embarrassing. "Rictumsepra!" Perhaps a diversionary spell would be what she needed to retrieve her opponent's wand. "Expelliarmus!"

There was a fire in her eyes that was determination. Claudine didn’t feel too guilty because in the event that she did win, Heath was capable of carrying on without his wand. After all, he learnt the way of Muggles as opposed to her. In addition, Claudine’d be there for him especially during classes when they needed their wands the most. But all of this was dependent on if she got the Ravenclaw’s wand first.
Claudine almost thought her spell hadn’t worked and was prepared to defend herself against another one of Heath’s. But his incantation was incomplete and he was giving her a small smile. Of course he wasn’t mad at her. Did he even ever feel anger towards her? Did that mean her spell had worked? Did he take th ehit on purpose? Did this count as her taking advantage of his kind heart? The Snakette hoped not.
It took her a second to realise that Heath was trying to cast a non verbal spell on himself but the girl was ready. “Expelliarmus!’’ Cue that number six-like wand movement that sent scarlet light in Heath’s direction.
Avalon was impressed. Despite being stuck on the ground, Mamie had sent another disarming spell her way. And even though her aim was off, Avalon felt a slight tug on her wand. Still stuck on the ground, Mamie was able to see this time that Avalon cast some spell to block hers. She made a mental note to learn what the blocking spell was, clearly it was very useful. She beamed as the older girl complimented her. Considering how discouraging their actual professor was, at least Mamie was learning something useful now. She opened her mouth to reply, but instead started giggling uncontrollably as the Rictusempra hit her. Unfortunately she was very ticklish. Practically rolling on the floor with laughter from the effects of the charm, Mamie couldn't do much to stop her wand from flying out of her hand. "You-you-you-hehe-got-hehehehe-me!" she managed to get out between giggles.

No no nO NO NO!
This was getting worse and worse by the second and Lucas wasn't having it. He didn't know why, but everything in his brain was focused on getting the wand back. It was almost as if the alarms going off in his head were stopping him from thinking properly - or thinking at all.
That is, until he saw Upstead point their wand at him.
......... uh oh.
There was a split second when a look of shock spread over the Gryffindor's face before it happened. The spell hit him squarely on his chest, knocking him upwards and backwards, before he landed on his back with a great THUD. "OWWW!" he groaned. Sweet Merlin, this was NOT HAPPENING.
And yes, luckily for Nem, he did stay down.
In fact, he even curled up into the foetus position, eyes squeezed shut and his hands as close to his chest as possible. Anyone nearby might be able to hear the steady stream of mumbling that was coming out of the seventh year's mouth.
"Please give it back, please just give my wand back..."

In theory, Ivy knew the Shield Charm could both block and rebound spells if the caster chose to, so she should have probably expected that possibility, especially since the Gryffindor was so much older. But, honestly, she hadn't expected it. She'd been focused on what spell she should use next, while also trying to be ready to listen for his next spell.
So the rebounded spell surprised her. And even though she managed to dodge it at the very last second, the Disarming Charm made contact. She took a few steps back with a squeak of surprise, and her wand flew out of her hand, soaring forward in Josh's general direction.

All these OIs being shouted in her direction made Bernie feel like she was trying to hang out with her brother's stupid Muggle friends again. She didn't like them, by the way. They were loud, and always drinkin' something and screamin' about something else.
"I won't kill her!" she announced LOUDLY toward Phoebe, and then shot a grin toward Aboli. Look at that, she'd turned out to be the best Slytherin in this school! Guess that was why she made Prefect, huh? And now Bernie knew also why this little Gryffindor she was dueling looked so familiar... she was Phoebe's little sister!!!
Oi oi oi, Headman was mad again. "Sorry sir," Bernie answered cheerfully, not even taking her eyes off Kinsay JAMES this time. Detention, with him, again? She just shrugged. This was nothing new for Bernie and as long as he didn't say something about 'probation' or 'grounded to your dorm' Bernie would just serve it and be on her way. She wasn't even feeling whingey about it. The dueling had her feeling a lot of adrenaline and nothing else. "EXPELLI---" she started to cast again, THIS time AIMING for Kinsay-not-in-hiding-anymore-James...
...and then the littler girl was just handing out her wand ot her. "Oh." Well that was no fun. Bernie wrinkled her nose at Kinsay just the way Phoebe liked to. "No, I have to earn it from you. I can't just take it. Isn't that how the Elder Wand works?" Hey look, SOMETHING had filtered into her jelly brain from earlier.
So she summoned it, a spell she'd been wanting to try on a person or object SINCE LIKE LAST YEAR when she'd read about it. "Accio Little James's wand." C'mere. Bernie held out her free hand to catch it.
